My grand-nephew asked on FB, since he’d voted already, could he opt out of political ads for the next 12 days.

Does that involve brown-eyed women and red grenadine?

A request, Charles: Could you make the featured and recent page columns collapsible? I just want to be able to hide the columns at work so that I don’t have to deal with the mostly conservative people I work with.

I watch Clinton speak and I have a hard time seeing the monster that they portray her to be… and I really think that the debates help set that difference apart in everyone’s mind, they could sit back and watch and listen and come to a couple of very simple conclusions…

1) Hillary knows her shit
2) Donald Trump is a scary sonafabitch
3) quite possibly, our media is a very mixed bag of folks.. some good, some worthless

18
EmmaAnne  Oct 27, 2016 • 11:50:08am

I wanted to encourage everyone who can to vote as early as possible. While you can’t get out of political ads, you will get way, way fewer calls from parties and candidates. Those of us making the calls have a shorter list. And if polling places are overcrowded or interfered with on election day, your vote will be in the bank.

Every time media outlets and Twitter erupts about an enthusiasm gap or that millennials or another demographic group aren’t breaking in numbers for Clinton, the reality seems to be quite different. Turns out that a lot of people are enthusiastic to vote for Clinton, and that runs across a wide range of demographic groups.

In poll after poll, the percentage of Hillary supporters voting FOR her and not just AGAINST Trump is well over 50%, and rising.

Trump’s supporters, OTOH, are mostly voting against HRC rather than for him, and that has been increasing.

If there’s tightening in the race, it’s coming from Republicans doing a Chaffetz.

Got to go all Liberal Redhead Texas No Bullshit Nasty Woman at the local polling place today.

I walk in and the woman working the front, an absolute pit bull of a human, is yelling that everyone has to have a photo ID to vote. Au contraire, mean white lady. That law was struck down.

I walk up to her. “Are you an official poll worker for the State of Texas, or an observer?” She starts puffing up like a pissed off toad. “I am an OFFICIAL Poll Worker.”

“Then I am sure you know a photo ID is not required to vote in Texas any more?”

“Who the hell are you? I AM AN OFFICIAL!” She’s yelling now. Everyone turns to stare.

This is not going to end well for her.

“Well, then you’re either making up your own laws or are ignorant and don’t need to be near a polling place. Do you not have pile of affidavits that people can sign if they don’t have a photo ID? Their voter registration card, a bill, you know those are valid with a signed affidavit, right? Do you not have those papers printed and ready to go?”

“Who the HELL do you think you are?!”

“I’m someone who is about to call down every last flame of hell on your ass for voter suppression in your official role as an election official. DO YOU HAVE THE FORMS PRINTED AND AVAILABLE?”

Silence.

“I’ll take that as a “no.” I’m going to go make some phone calls. Have a delightful day, sweetheart.”

I walked out and got on the phone. Local Dems knew exactly who she was and they swooped into whatever action was appropriate for swooping. This is their gig.

For those of you who live in states that just got your voter ID laws struck down, watch for this. And if you see it, don’t ignore it. Make one phone call to your local Democrats and they will gleefully handle it. They’re ready and eager.

While I like Michelle, I hope she and President Obama can enjoy a nice retirement. There’s a few reasons: if Democrats are going to develop a “bench” they can’t keep going back to the same names, there has to be room for new faces/voices; while Hillary Clinton is qualified to be president, if the first two women to be elected are wives of former presidents, I’m not sure that’s a good thing, I’d rather see someone like Kamala Harris get a chance; I don’t like dynastic politics, which is why I was dreading Bush vs. Clinton for two years (granted, had I known it’d be the blazing dumpster fire that is Trump instead of Bush, I might have taken that).

#regram from @nytarchives 📰🔍 The George Washington Bridge, which stretches across the Hudson River to connect New York and New Jersey, opened 85 years ago this week. At its debut on October 24, 1931, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. But perhaps more impressive was that the #bridge opened 8 months ahead of schedule and cost considerably less than its original estimates. At its formal dedication ceremony, John F. Galvin, chairman of the Port of New York Authority, announced, “Tomorrow will start a traffic that will flow ceaselessly for generations to come.” And things certainly got off to a good start the following day. @nytimes reported that 56,312 cars and 100,000 pedestrians crossed by “pleasure car, and service car, on foot, motorcycle and roller skates, and one citizen was on a horse.” This photo from the @nytarchives captures some of those cars and pedestrians crossing the #GeorgeWashingtonBridge on its first day of service.

You rock!! That was a beautiful thing. This picture ID claim is outrageous - it was even on the Houston local news the other night that a picture ID is required to vote. I was screaming at the TV “no! it is not!” Thank you so much for the added details about the forms, etc. I’m memorizing them.

A couple of friends and I had planned to early vote Wednesday followed by a celebratory lunch and margs. Since the lines have been so long - to our absolute delight - we decided to postpone til next Wednesday. If the lines are still long, great! We’ll happily stand in one and wait (though we’d rather be doing lunch and margs).

And that venue comes with a bonus!

Trump acquired the option to develop the site early in his career as a real estate developer, and he spent years trying to get the city to build a convention center at his location on West 34th Street. “There wouldn’t be a new convention center in New York today if it hadn’t been for the Trumps,” he wrote in his first book, The Art of the Deal, Trump even lobbied the city to name the building named after his family, offering to waive his $833,000 fee if they slapped the “Trump” name on the center.

But when the city chose a different developer for the project, Trump turned on it. In his book, he held the ensuing project responsible for “perhaps the most horrendous construction delays and cost overruns in the history of the building business”:

There was a recent interview with Richard Branson, who’s had lunch with both of them, and he drew a stark contrast between Trump, who talked for an hour about himself and the people he planned to take revenge on, and Clinton, who exchanged views with Branson about subjects that affected the larger world.

Huh. I have never heard of such a thing. My first instinct is to say don’t do it. Is it through Hillary’s campaign? Because that has been run so well I am inclined to trust her even in such new fangled matters.

Eight members of the editorial board backed Clinton, two supported the Nevada ballot option “None of These Candidates,” and none supported Republican Donald Trump or Libertarian Gary Johnson. Four board members think Clinton will be a good, strong president. One “None” supporter vehemently opposes Trump and Clinton. And the other five board members primarily cast their votes against Trump.

If a stronger Republican candidate had been nominated, the board very well may have backed that person - and board members would have definitely had a better debate over whom to endorse. Unfortunately, Trump disqualified himself with his antics.

Actually, the more I think about it, the more Trump U seems like the prototype of the Trump Campaign. Convince people that have been left behind by the recovery that they can still get ahead, that it’s not their fault (which may actually be true), that this billionaire knows what he’s doing and that he can help you get to where you deserve to be, all you have to do is cut a check/vote for him.

Back before the www was a big thing, when I was in the Navy and my wife couldn’t get a job in the area because there were so many Navy wives trying to get jobs, we sent $50 to one of those things on AOL that promised transcription work. Then we got a packet that told us to do some things to get work, which we tried, that failed.

A few years later, after I got out of the Navy, we got a notice from the Sheriff that the company was being prosecuted for being a scam, and my wife might need to be called to testify.

Sure, but they weren’t being offered some kind of obviously transparent “make millions by stuffing envelopes” - they were being told they would learn how to make money in real estate. The “marks” were looking to work in order to get successful, and most people (prior to this election) probably weren’t aware of how much of Trumps success was just bullshit smoke-and-mirrors. They were unsophisticated, to be sure, but as far as I could tell they weren’t really looking for “money for nothing.”
Marks maybe but I find them to be mostly sympathetic and Trump U to be a horrible festering demon-anal-wart.

re: #155 No Country For Old Haters

I disagree.

There are motives much more complicated than simple greed that allow marks to get taken.

Cons working by making the mark feel like they’re succeeding, do the right thing, whether “right” is defined in terms of self-interest or in terms of ethics. Sometimes that means greed and “winning” by exploiting a financial loophole, but it cab also mean tapping into a person’s desire to be helpful, and also means gulling anyone desperate to better their situation.

This is what makes all of these university scams so insidious: they’re not just relying on pure avarice, like a suitcase scam or a Nigerian prince email, they’re hacking an entire cultural phenomenon in which people are told to get educated and better themselves as a route to a better life. It’s not just mo’ money, it’s the entire idea that you’ll be a better person, and a better individual, with that added value of education. In a culture where the “American Dream” involves hard work, entrepreneurship, optimism, and self-reliance: that’s what they’re preying on.

You know who gets caught the most by that type of scam? People who don’t have enough knowledge base, nor circle of friends with relevant experience, to discern the hollowness of the advice given—or are so hard up that they’re desperate. A lot of times people don’t know what’s possible in finance/real estate/tax loopholes, so the radical claims seem possible if presented by an authority figure or someone who’s trusted (many scams use affiliation as a foot in the door—you trust your pastor, why not use his financial service?—just look at the virus-like propagation of pyramid-shaped MLM franchises) And, again, we have a culture that loves the idea of the rebel (or disruptor) that bends the rules and wins, so people are primed to accept the premise of One Weird Trick.

This dead-thread comment from Renaissance_Man deserves a lot more views. Great advice for anyone trying to convince someone who loathes the tiny-fisted fascist but has so-called “concerns” about HRC.

My Idiot Brother has an FB friend who’s an even worse Steinbot. He posted “Give me a reason to vote for Clinton that doesn’t involve Trump”, so I wrote up a nice paragraph on her experience, her history of work on progressive causes, her platform, and her willingness to adopt some of Sanders’ platform planks.

He blocked me.

Yes, it was the pictured one. For at least $6,500. That’s good Schwinn.

Moment of cuteness. Meet my new neighbor Dexter:

He’s a 7 mo. old Coton de Tulear (French for so fucking cute you can’t stop grinning). His mom is a nurse who works long days so he gets to come over here and play with his doggie mentor and moi. His personality is as adorable as his incredibly soft, fluffy self.

Seriously…we need moar Dexter.

Trump TV

Donald Trump on Boris Epshteyn, an aide turned internet talk show host: “Look at Boris! He’s becoming a big star!” Boris chuckles.

Questions that Boris asked Trump: Your stamina and the energy you have for this process, for the American people is just unparalleled? /1

The polls are coming out… Up three points in Florida, we’re up four points in Ohio. So how are you feeling out there on the trail? /2

Another Boris question for Trump: The State Department under Hillary Clinton… spent 5.4 million of taxpayer money on crystal stemware? /3

Boris question for Trump: She not only failed but she’s also disqualified from being president, right? /4

Final: Obviously the system of corruption just permeated the whole group, right? What’s your message for people to get out the vote? /5

It’s still less red than it used to be, even going by map area. Riverside and San Bernardino counties (the two just east of Orange County) and Imperial County (east of San Diego) used to be fairly reliably red. So did San Diego, for that matter.

In an era of HD-video capable cellphones, how do you even make video look that bad? Did Sapphire make a special “Shitlook” effect?

The total population of all the red on that map might be less than 100,000. Those are some seriously rural areas of CA.

It might be more of an effect from someone use a phone to capture an image the video off of a monitor in less than ideal conditions…
