Mark Kirk is a deplorable piece of shit:

Tammy Duckworth has more testicular fortitude than that hack. I hope she wipes the floor with him.

Still dumbfounded by the verdict. Apparently, the workers could have strolled in and done their jobs, despite armed men sitting at their desks and using their computers.

It’s the ultimate proof of white privilege. If the Oregon standoff had been done by Muslims, the building would’ve been droned within a day. If the occupiers had been black, it might have taken up to 48 hours before the bullets started flying. But these guys get off?

Yeah, right.

In otherwords, some intern who was using this to boost his resume. Kirk meanwhile will either act like his words were misinterpreted or some bs apology.

If Mark Kirk wasn’t a modern-day Republican, I’d probably say he’s regretting his remark right about now. But that requires things like shame or self-awareness.

Since this a music thread and since I posted in the previous thread, just want to toss this repeat comment in:

Watching Jools Holland, and on right now is Joanne Shaw Taylor and her band with Jools sitting in on upright piano. They just did a knockout version of “Summertime.” Joanne is a slick guitar player. Never heard of her, but will look further.

And Chrissie and The Pretenders are on with a new album. Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) produced it and is on the Jools Holland show as a member of The Pretenders. They still kick ass, and Auerbach adds to it all.

Good stuff. That is all.

WHY WHY WHY is this turning around?

Is Trump doing some massive ad buys in these states? Even if so, why would that be effective? Do people have that short of a memory? What sort of scandal is it going to take before it will change people’s minds and make it stick?

Is this trend going to continue? :-(

Take a look at the polls. You’ll notice that most of the most recent ones have issues, or come from disreputable organizations (Rasmussen, Remington, Pulse, and UPI) , or places with questionable methods (SurveyMonkey and Google).

We had a huge amount of noise introduced this week.

Hillary Clinton

Donald Trump

Yeah, that is what I have seen too.

Rasmussen is Rasmussen, and Pulse Opinion Strategies is a spin off of them.

Remington is was started by this guy, who was Campaign Manager for Ted Cruz.

And UPI is Moonie-owned, and CVoter has had issues in India with allegations of the data being adjusted to fit the needs of the one who commissioned the poll.

And Gravis is Breitbart’s go-to Poll Place.

Then you have internet polls like Google Customer Surveys, SurveyMonkey, and Reuters/Ipsos.

Honestly, I wouldn’t panic over that. I get the feeling that most “undecideds” are just conservatives that are too embarrassed to openly admit it. You pretty much have to contort yourself into knots to be an undecided, and that’s what conservatives excel at.

I think a lot of people who register Indy do so for a couple reasons- one to act above party politics and the other to be able to vote in either primary should said primary be open.

Sam Wang, keeping his eye on the election is quite different than Nate Silver:

election.princeton.edu

The turning of one or two state polls does not an election make. I am not interested in poll unskewing, I’ll leave that to Karl Rove. Professor Wang doesn’t unskew polls either.

Then there is Prof. Wang’s daily histogram:

election.princeton.edu

Which shows no path for Mr. Trump. None, not one.

I’m using Ohio as the example. They have had the most data come out this week.

I can’t even easily find the voter data for SurveyMonkey.

I looked at Remington, and they have the Democrats Outnumbering Republicans by 9%, and 19% of African Americans, and 36% of Hispanics going to Trump. The only part correct is the Female-Male ratio.

Can’t find Demographics for Pulse Opinion either.

Yes, but there is no reason to assume he is lying.

Since no one was apparently present for said jerk’s note, all we can say about the person is he (or she?) is a jerk, nothing more.

We can say that he’s a vet jerk.

You know though, it always amazes me that the decals and bumper stickers on a stranger’s car could infuriate someone that much. I can remember seeing anti choice stickers when I was a kid and although I thought em tacky, never crossed my mind to mess with them or the car. People disagree. Maybe it’s in part because I don’t do confrontation but I usually keep my politics to myself unless it’s here or I feel I really have to speak up especially if it’s someone I expect better of being ignorant.

Being a vet is not an extraordinary claim, I don’t go around doubting everyone who claims to be a vet (including folks here, whose names I don’t even know) so I don’t see why his claim in this context would be in reasonable doubt. We just don’t know, and can’t know unless “Wade” is somehow identified. This grabs my attention because ammosexual nutcakes like the oathkeepers are so fond of invoking veteran status when they make their barely veiled threats of insurrection and terrorism. The authenticity of these claims then becomes significant. Some of the worst, including most of the leaders, are undoubtedly veterans since their names and purported records are public. Quite a few others are definitely not though.

So what’s the reason to assume he is telling the truth then? Because he wrote a poorly-worded note on a napkin? The military has a basic reading and writing requirement.

If I wanted to prove I am a Navy vet, I can do it a number of ways rather than simply claiming I am a vet (show my retired ID card, show my DD-214, even show pictures of myself in uniform):

The person could be a vet. But people use veteran status in the same way they use God, as an argument from authority. If someone told me I had to choose vet or not vet, and they didn’t like me saying “either”, then I would probably choose vet. But there’s plenty of experience to leave open the possibility that it’s not a vet, especially if you narrow it down to people who use their veteran status to harass others.

I think he’s in the Bible somewhere.
Here it is in Judges 15, KJV, an obvious prophetic reference to Bryan’s oratorical skills and his future status as a mighty tool of God:

15 And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith.

16 And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.

17 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand, and called that place Ramathlehi.

DF’s issue was that he seems to have recognized awhile back that his party had become a disorganized mosh pit of hatred, bigotry, and rank stupidity…but because of familial relations, he would not break away from them. I felt for him at the beginning, because I know that my own father is one of those conservative retirees who thinks the whole country went to hell under Carter and has voted a straight Republican ticket ever since. But as time has worn on, my patience with him wore thin. He’s one of those I think of as “Good Republicans,” insistent that he’s not really part of the cannibal cult that his party’s base has become, but will not stop making excuses for his support of them.

Ah no. Irish Catholic turned Atheist socialist. After the implosion of the left at the end of the 60’s he founded the Democratic Socialists of America - Marxist, pro union, pro democracy and generally working with the Democrats to pull them to the left.

This is why it’s so foolhardy to believe that even a major loss this year would change the GOP. Those who are #NeverTrump are every bit as horrid as he is, they’re just generally better about keeping it under their hats. When he loses in two weeks, the party will excommunicate him and all who fell with him, wipe their name from the records, and then insist from that day forward that the party is “cleansed” and they can move forward.

At Level 17.

That’s a pain in the ass at low levels, and usually requires you to get the fire ring in Costa del Sol and then backtrack.

Once you’ve reached North Corel you can go south to the edge of the desert and learn aqualung from the harpy. That’s just as strong as beta, doesn’t need any backtracking, and is a less dangerous fight because the harpy is weak.

None. Or, at least none that doesn’t involve a Road to Damascus moment. So long as the party continues to bury their mistakes in unmarked graves, covered in quicklime and concrete, they will never change in any significant fashion. They’ll just keep making the same mistakes, looking for new and more inventive ways to retain power. They’ll just keep finding new ways to fuck that chicken until the courts permanently smack them down or they find an argument that a SCOTUS bench will agree with.

Yeah, about that:

usatoday.com

A 51% majority of likely voters express at least some concern about the possibility of violence on Election Day; one in five are “very concerned.” Three of four say they have confidence that the United States will have the peaceful transfer of power that has marked American democracy for more than 200 years, but just 40% say they are “very confident” about that.

More than four in 10 of Trump supporters say they won’t recognize the legitimacy of Clinton as president, if she prevails, because they say she wouldn’t have won fair and square.

Of course, this could all be whining. We’ll have to see. The rest of the USA Today article goes into interviews with both Trump and Clinton’s supporters on what they think will follow on Nov. 8.

Mostly those on my Facebook who are Drumpfskind fans appear to have de-friended me, or gone silent. I know some are still there, just not posting.

Anyway, I’m not really surprised at how easily Drumpfskind found his marks. This is the same phenomenon we see over and over. Like all those people who go to hear creationist lecturers ramble on about creationism - it doesn’t really matter what modern science has discovered, as that’s not what is important.

My feeling is that many people in this country are angry because they feel left out. Perhaps they are. But I don’t know who they would have to blame but themselves. While we can readily see how the hate-talkers on AM radio, or several of the Fox News shows, or any of a million websites, can easily feed into this feeling of being a victim of some conspiracy by “elites”, the choice nevertheless to whom to listen. or to read, or to watch, lay with the individual.

I am sticking with my assertion that what lay beneath so much of what we see in the contemporary American public discourse is an existential crisis resulting from two centuries of very rapid change. Change that has swept away the religious foundations of our society - and our society was definitely influence early on by intense religiosity.

As you say, they feel left out, or maybe left behind (hahaha!). Religion is becoming less necessary for an increasing number of people, and the population is becoming more diverse day by day. IOW, the ratio of super-devout white Christians to the overall population is dwindling, and they feel threatened. Plus, the supply of jobs people without college educations could find and live on is also dwindling, or has moved away from where those people live.

They are unhappy and frustrated — just the kind of people who would follow the siren call of someone who says “Only I can fix! Buh-lieve me!”

Intense religiousity? All those deists that signed the Declaration of Independence? Or the Muslims who fought in the Revolution (yes, there were Muslims in the Continental Army)?

Jefferson’s prototype for the I Amendment in the Province of Virginia guaranteeing freedom of religion and banning public support for churches?

Evangelicals throughout the history of the USA felt that politics was not an appropriate sphere, until such hucksters as Jerry Falwell and Ralph Reed came along and wedded themselves in an unholy alliance with Ronald Reagan.

I am old enough to remember in most political discourse that religion was a verboten topic in debates.

Though I am not old enough to remember President Kennedy, he was specifically questioned over being Catholic as there was concern his loyalty would be to the Church and not the nation.

A South Korean man flown to the U.S. 37 years ago and adopted by an American couple at age 3 has been ordered deported back to a country that is completely alien to him.

“It is heartbreaking news,” said Dae Joong (DJ) Yoon, executive director of the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium, who had been in contact with Adam Crapser.

Crapser remains confined in an immigration detention center in Tacoma, Washington, pending his deportation.

Crapser waived an appeal during the hearing Monday because he is desperate to get out of detention, his Seattle attorney, Lori Walls, told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

“I’m sure he doesn’t have any idea what he can do in Korea,” Yoon said in a phone interview from his group’s offices in Annandale, Va.

Crapser’s plight mirrors those of thousands of others. Yoon’s group says an estimated 35,000 intercountry adoptees lack U. S. citizenship. It is backing legislation in Congress to address that.

You know, having lived here for 15 years, I do like the Czech people. However, they really do seem to be enchanted by some forms of woowoo, particularly, homeopathy woowoo.

*sigh*

The number of homeopathics sold in the Czech Republic rose by over 50 percent during the past 15 years, which shows that the number of Czechs ready to fight flu with other drugs than Paracetamol or Ibuprofen is steeply rising, daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) writes yesterday.
“The patients most frequently use homeopathics against the problems associated with common viral diseases,” the paper quotes Ales Krebs, deputy chairman of the Czech Pharmacy Chamber, as saying.
Both doctors and chemists frown upon the news since the science has never proven any curative effect of homeopathic preparations.
According to the patient information leaflets enclosed in the homeopathics treating flu such as the well-known Oscillococcinum, these preparations contain sugar and extremely low quantity of duck entrails.

Stepan Svacina, chairman of the Czech Medical Society, says: “The doctor can use a placebo in a psychological therapy. It does not matter whether this may be a homeopathic preparation or jumping on one leg.”
“Advocates of homeopathy often argue with doctors’ conspiracy with pharmaceutical makers, but they themselves certainly do not offer their methods for free as a sort of philanthropy,” a doctor is quoted as saying.
The cost of entry check-ups in homeopathic centres mostly ranges between 100 to 3,000 crowns. The patient pays another 800-1,000 crowns for each next examination, MfD writes.

1 USD is about 25 Kč.

Quick question.

I have always thought that seizing control of a US military base and joy riding around it in an M1A1 would be interesting. Naturally, I never tried to do so as I assumed it would be illegal and I’m not a grade A anti-american nutcase. Now that I know it is totally not illegal to seize control of a federal facility and trash it while riding around in stolen government vehicles, I’m curious as to how one goes about making this happen.

Is it sufficient just to present my white self to the first soldier I see, identify as patriotic sovereign citizen and demand they vacate the base after getting the tank ready for me, or do I need to do the whole co-splay thing and dress up in camo, carry around an AK47 knockoff, and wear a grubby cap with a 2nd amendment meme on it?

Trump: Worst economy ever. Worse than even during the Depression. Cities aflame and inner cities are rioting over the deplorable conditions and lack of jobs approaching 50%.
Natl Review: It could have been better if only we slashed taxes for the top tax bracket by 20% to unleash the economic powerhouse of the untapped wealth being sapped by high taxes.
Speaker Ryan: The news would have been even better had tax rates dropped per our contract on America rehash.

Progressives/Liberals: The economy would have done better had government been allowed to spend more money on infrastructure to improve efficiencies and reduce costs on transit/traffic/congestion/reduced commuter times, etc.

Department of Defense paid $57 million for Epi-Pens, up from $9 million in 2008. The increase is primarily due to Mylan Pharmaceutical’s 600% increase. Half that spending was at retail pharmacies (where people using CHAMPUS/Tricare military insurance would normally fill a prescription). That is three times higher than the discount rate.

The DOD gave the most comprehensive information about the cost of Epi-Pens. For most government agencies, the prices paid for drugs are considered classified information.

Reuters estimated there was a $54 million difference between the price at civilian pharmacies and military sickbays and clinics.

Mylan is offering a “discount” on Epi-Pens which is only 300% higher than the price last year, but half of what the retail price is now.

The drugmaker also agreed to pay $465 million to settle questions over whether the Medicaid program for the poor overpaid because EpiPens were classified as a generic treatment, a category that allows manufacturers to give smaller rebates to government agencies.

While EpiPen spending represents a fraction of a percent of the Defense Department’s $49 billion annual healthcare budget, the data illustrates the premium it was paying for EpiPens at retail outlets.

“Lawmakers would not be terribly happy to hear that DoD is paying more at retail,” said Brian Bruen, a drug economics researcher at George Washington University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health.

The Defense Department and Department of Veterans Affairs, typically pay among the lowest drug prices in the country because of discounts mandated by law, as well as rebates negotiated with drugmakers, Bruen said.

Indeed, the Pentagon has paid $173 for an EpiPen two-pack filled through mail order and $169 at military facilities in fiscal year 2016.

Bureau of Land Management was founded in 1946. Prior to that, it was the Grazing Service and the General Land Office.

Also the Hammonds were convicted on two counts of arson each, then signed a plea deal to avoid other charges, waiving their rights to appeal. They knew that prosecutors were going to request five year sentences when they signed that deal. A judge violated the law giving them an illegally short sentence, which the government appealed and won.

Also, the fires they set were dangerous as fuck, one set to cover up evidence of their illegal poaching and the other endangered federal firefighters.

The 2001 Hardie-Hammond fire began, according to Probation Officer Robb, when hunters in the area witnessed the Hammonds illegally slaughter a herd of deer.[19] Less than two hours later, a fire erupted and forced the hunters to leave the area, allegedly also to conceal evidence of the illegal killing of the deer.[20] Later, Steven’s nephew Dusty Hammond testified that his uncle told him to start lighting matches and “light the whole countryside on fire.” Dusty also testified that he was “almost burned up in the fire” and had to flee for his life.[16][21] The Hammonds have claimed they started the fire to stop invasive plants from growing onto their grazing fields.[22]

The 2006 Krumbo Butte fire started out as a wildfire, but several illegal backburns were set by the Hammonds with the intent to protect their winter feed. The backfires were set under the cover of night without warning the firefighting camp that was known to be on the slopes above.[20][23] According to the indictment, the fires threatened to trap four BLM firefighters, one of whom later confronted Dwight Hammond at the fire scene after he had moved his crews to avoid the threat.[20][21] Two days later, according to federal prosecutors, Steven Hammond threatened to frame a BLM employee with arson if he didn’t stop the investigation.[22]

This is quite the gray area here, so to speak, one wants to target one’s advertising. But this is different than distributing flyers (which can be highly selective as to who receives them) or purchasing ads on broadcast media (which are not selective in regards to who hears them)

But there is no difference between excluding minorities in real estate advertising on Facebook and printing advertisements and only handing them out to white suburbanites outside a Whole Foods.

Return to the pre-ACA levels of uninsureds (meaning about 20 million more people would be uninsured). Premium hikes would continue as fast or faster than before because ACA imposed the beginnings of transparency on health care costs.

So yeah, magical thinking.

Yesterday, the Daily News ran an op-ed by Dr. Marc Siegel who complained about the ACA and insurance coverage under the ACA. Problem was his complaint was mostly about insurance generally - that it’s cumbersome, added millions of people to insurance coverage without having enough doctors and health care practictioners available to handle the influx of people seeking care, etc.

The crux of the argument is that insuring more people was somehow bad, or that people were trying to play catch-up on their personal health because they’d gone years without seeing doctors.

If anything, it’s another strike against having insurance companies providing health care insurance.

Another strike on top of that? Aetna topped quarterly profits and estimates. They made $600 million in the quarter, complaining about their ACA line of business, and are reducing their exposure to ACA because their profits are taking a hit from the ACA line of business. It shows that health care insurance should be a nonprofit enterprise - because the money should be going into providing coverage, not profits, IMO.

It would be possible to expand LGA, but it would involve either filling in the bay between the airport and Rikers Island (relocating the city jail in the process), or moving the land-side portion of the airport - terminals, parking, etc. to a new structure built over the Grand Central Parkway. I don’t see either happening.

So, the airport will remain a regional airport as far as most trips are concerned since it can’t handle the bigger planes.

Runway 4/22 could be lengthened northward out into the bay with no real effect to anyone. Runway 13/31 though really has no where to go. Westward causes clearance problems over the Rikers Island bridge, and eastward with the derricks at the North Shore Marine Transfer terminal

My son travels for work a lot. I recommended he avoid LGA and either fly to JFK or EWR if he has to go to NYC. Way back when, I preferred LaGuardia when I was flying to and from NY/LI, because it was marginally closer to my parent’s home, but only for domestic flights.

This is really kind of nuts if you think about it, the more any particular poll goes out of control the more his model reacts to that. It basically undermines the entire idea of averaging polls in the first place.

I’ve recently flown out of LGA a couple of times. I wont fly out of there until they finally get the parking situation resolved, and even then I’ll probably consider off-airport parking. Last time I did long term parking there, it ended up costing me more for parking than it did to fly out and back. And there’s next to no parking spaces available while they’re renovating. There was also issues a while back about how the road in/out of the airport backed up for hours due to traffic/congestion. That’s reason enough to avoid.

The terminal for Delta has been upgraded, and is fairly comfortable, albeit smaller than comparable ones at JFK. Since my primary carriers are Delta and jetBlue, I typically fly out of JFK (and love the airtrain for convenience purposes). I don’t particularly care for flying out of EWR though, even though it’s closer to home.

Upon dissolution of the USSR, the Ukraine was left with the world’s fifth-largest nuclear arsenal on its territory. They agreed to disarm in exchange for guarantees from the West that we would help defend their territorial integrity.

Since we have welshed on our end of the deal, is it not only fair that we give them back their nukes?

This is a story about a land deal pretty much in my backyard - the intersection of Rt. 4 and 17 in Paramus. Seems Trump wanted to build a massive project there, including hotels, towers, and mall to compete with the Garden State Plaza across from it.

How did Trump get involved in this location? Seems he was a part owner of the Alexander’s Department Store chain (27% made him largest shareholder). Alexander’s was trying to figure out how to redevelop the site, and Trump tried to get it done.

He failed.

The site was ultimately turned into an Ikea, Bed Bath and Beyond and Christmas Tree shops, while the Garden State Plaza has turned into one of the largest malls in the nation and recently built a significant expansion w/new luxury stores.

Oh, and why did I mention Alexander’s and Trump’s part ownership?

Because that department store ultimately went bankrupt as well.

The bankruptcy was timed with Trump’s departure from the board.

The filing seems linked to the departure of Donald Trump from Alexander’s board. Trump left the board April 16 after turning over his Alexander’s shares to Citibank in partial payment of a $70 million debt. Trump, remember, abhors the word “bankruptcy.” Alexander’s went broke May 15, saying it was in “the best interests” of the company.

But the more I crunch the numbers, the more it looks as if a major reason — maybe the major reason — for Alexander’s bankruptcy is public relations. Alexander’s cash and the proceeds of its going-out-of-business sale were enough to pay its suppliers in full and close its stores without resorting to Chapter 11.

So why file? That way, no one can blame Alexander’s board of directors for closing the stores and putting 5,000 employees on the street. No blame attaches to Alexander’s dominant shareholder, a low-profile real estate developer named Steven Roth. And as Citibank pointed out in a news release, the three Citibankers on Alexander’s board abstained on the bankruptcy vote.

Listen closely, and you hear the chant: “It’s not my fault.”

Roth’s name has barely been mentioned, which is the way he likes it. The man, a believer in the “It’s the whale that comes to the surface that gets harpooned” school of public relations, has gone to the trouble of hiring the expensive spinmeisters at Kekst & Co. to say that he has nothing to say.

The financial reason for the Alexander’s bankruptcy, to the extent there is one, seems to involve another batch of low-profile rich people, the Gruss family. The Grusses — it rhymes with “mooses” — own 18 percent of the partnership that owns the Alexander’s store at Lexington Avenue and 59th Street, prime Manhattan real estate. The Grusses have the right to sell their holding to Alexander’s for $35 million through August 1993, and Alexander’s doesn’t have the cash to pay them.

I can’t tell you what the players in this game have to say, because no one would talk on the record. So I’m basing this article mostly on public information, and my interpretation of it.

What we have here is a classic example of how easy it is to assume that the famous players — Donald Trump, Citibank, Alexander’s founding Farkas family — are the real powers, and to ignore the low-profile types such as Steve Roth and the Grusses. In this case, it’s the low-profile folks who have the clout.

And also, isn’t the draft, in this day and age, mainly a bureaucratic formality? What, seriously, is the likelihood that the US is going to need large numbers of conscripts to fill a high-tech, specialized military’s man(woman-)power needs?

The only situation where I can realistically see the services running that short of volunteers is if the civilian economy revs up to the point where there are so many non-military job opportunities for the otherwise-enlistees that the competition creates shortages.

Interesting how they use this as an excuse to pimp FreeBSD which has gone nowhere because it’s a pig to setup and use effectively. Do not get me started on the miserable excuse that is their ports system. And I say that as someone who _likes_ the various BSD’s over SysV type systems.

What the juror meant was the government failed to prove that the defendants intended to impede the federal workers ability to turn all the land over to them and head back to DC.

This is what fucking gets me. That was the Bundys’ endgame. Right there.

Either the prosecutors were really bad at their jobs, or these people were basically Bundys without the guns and the inbreeding.

I’m leaning towards the latter. This fucking country, sometimes…

468
KingKenrod  Oct 28, 2016 • 9:00:15am

Personally I thought the “impeding federal employees” conspiracy was a pretty weak charge. Theft/Trespassing/Squatting and related conspiracy would make more sense. It’s not surprising that the one charge that didn’t get an acquittal was theft. But I’m mystified why the firearms charges didn’t stick.

As far was what else to charge them with, there’s setting up illegal checkpoints, which amounts to declaring an unauthorized legal structure. A private citizen with a weapon can’t just stop someone on public lands. That’s got to be illegal. Also vandalism and destruction/misuse of public lands.

That’s so sad. It is a deep read about both alcoholism and the path Frey forged as a young female reporter fearlessly going into locker rooms to get her story.

Coincidentally, on the alcohol abuse thing, I’ve been listening to and am right now listening to The Replacements of the Bob Stinson era. I read a few articles last night about Bob and the band’s problems, but how Bob in particular couldn’t stop drinking even as lost everything.

“Here Comes A Regular”

Well a person can work up a mean mean thirst
after a hard day of nothin’ much at all
Summer’s passed, it’s too late to cut the grass
There ain’t much to rake anyway in the fall

And sometimes I just ain’t in the mood
to take my place in back with the loudmouths
You’re like a picture on the fridge that’s never stocked with food
I used to live at home, now I stay at the house

And everybody wants to be special here
They call your name out loud and clear
Here comes a regular
Call out your name
Here comes a regular
Am I the only one here today?

Well a drinkin’ buddy that’s bound to another town
Once the police made you go away
And even if you’re in the arms of someone’s baby now
I’ll take a great big whiskey to ya anyway

Everybody wants to be someone’s here
Someone’s gonna show up, never fear
‘cause here comes a regular
Call out your name
Here comes a regular
Am I the only one who feels ashamed?

Kneeling alongside old Sad Eyes
He says opportunity knocks once then the door slams shut
All I know is I’m sick of everything that my money can buy
The fool who wastes his life, God rest his guts

First the lights, then the collar goes up, and the wind begins to blow
Turn your back on a pay-you-back, last call
First the glass, then the leaves that pass, then comes the snow
Ain’t much to rake anyway in the fall

Texas Quietly Prepares To Pass New Rules Requiring Doctors To Bury or Cremate Fetal Remains

That’s because the new rule, as the DMN writes, “would require all medical facilities, hospitals and clinics to cremate or bury fetal remains, no matter the period of gestation.” That potentially means medical providers have to figure out how to provide burials for things like molar and ectopic pregnancies and very early-term miscarriages. Texas also hasn’t specified if death certificates have to be issued for the burials to take place; if they do, they could compromise the privacy and anonymity of the patients, as the Texas Hospital Association points out, since death certificates become public record after one year.

A former Virginia resident has been charged with felony voter registration fraud after prosecutors say he fabricated voter registration forms by “inventing” false applicants, officials announced Friday.

Vafalay Massaquoi, 30, a former resident of Alexandria, is accused of fabricating records this spring while working for an unnamed voter registration advocacy group, according to Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan L. Porter. The applications were filed with the Alexandria registrar’s office, which forwarded the matter to prosecutors for review.

Massaquoi was arrested in early October in Philadelphia, extradited to Alexandria on Thursday and arraigned in court Friday. He faces two felony counts of forging a public record and two felony counts of voter registration fraud, each carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

“In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation … I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation,” he wrote.

Comey’s letter contains so little that they won’t be able to chew on this for so long.

Little or not, it still contains material for the main themes the Republicans and the media can run with:

HILLARY E-MAILS!
FBI!
INVESTIGATION!!!

With any real analysis left as an afterthought, if that….

PS: Why would Comey be “forced” to investigate this stuff - forced by who? And why publish the letter? My other question was “why now”?, but that’s obvious (IMO).

As per the Krugman tweet above, I wonder if this is Comey’s last-ditch attempt to help GOPers salvage their Senate majority.

This is just the kind of hint that could cause an already close race in my home state of Ohio being closer than need be. I don’t want her to lose Ohio, we have helped get Obama in and I really do want to see us help get Clinton in as the first female president.

The FBI has felt pressured since the day they held their presser saying there would be no indictments. Then we had the congressional clown show and Jason Chaffetz eyes got real big when he said “”Do you need a referral from Congress” to continue down the investigative road, now looking for a perjury charge.

This could very well be Comey tossing a bone to Chaffetz and gang to get his own name back in their good graces. He may not be considering the timing, but it sure is questionable.

Where was this intense digging and investigation into the Iraq war and the Bush administration. Oh wait…that only costs thousands of lives and billions of dollars and kept this country in a mess for close to 15 years.

Yeah, kind of a notable flaw in The System: the FBI Director can indulge in any and all sorts of partisan-driven political nonsense; but always has the out to retreat into the (usually bogus) screen of “non-partisan justice” or whatever. And (since the charge of partisan bias might be confirmed by calling a Director out on their BS) little can be done about it.
