Former DOJ Spokesman Slams FBI Director for “Flagrantly Violating DOJ Rules”

Calls this disclosure Comey’s “worst abuse yet”
Politics • Views: 54,310

Matthew A. Miller served as director of the Department of Justice’s office of public affairs under Eric Holder, and today he harshly criticized FBI director James Comey for releasing his statement about Hillary Clinton’s email case.

Miller says Comey has “flagrantly violated” Justice Department rules before, when he held a press conference to announce he wasn’t recommending charges against Clinton, but said today’s statement, released to House Republicans, was “the worst abuse yet.”

According to Miller, the Justice Department deliberately avoids publicly discussing investigations most of the time, but especially this close to an election.

FBI director Comey has some ‘splaining to do.

Here’s Miller’s Twitter timeline; the tweets slamming Comey are still near the top.

well… once Ms. Clinton gets elected… I wouldn’t have an issue with having our attorney general asking Mr. Comey to resign. He’s managed to take the rule of apolitical appointees in LEO and turn it into a political position, which is absolutely the LAST thing it needs to be.

Perhaps he can go on Faux and Trump in a while and tell them how he managed to circumvent years of apolitical law enforcement and turn it into a personal vendetta for fun and profit and turning the last vestiges of bipartisanship into a flaming pile of poo on the doorstep of democracy.

Comey is a Republican that was appointed as FBI director in 2013 by President Obama.

As anyone with even the faintest grasp of US politics could have predicted, Comey has used his position for partisan advantage at least twice now. The only apparent restraint on his behavior has been not wanting to look like an idiot for recommending prosecution of a hopelessly lost case.

Let this be a lesson to Democrats. Republicans are not to be trusted.

Out for a walk… on the way to the store… I come across two guys talking, one younger, one older. I overheard the older guy talking… and he was going on about being paid for speeches and “one knows” that the people paying expect something in return.

As I’ve noted before, the anti-Clinton feelings in the electorate are baked-in. There is no changing them. Any single topic can be turned into a reason to declare Hillary a criminal.

This is what we’re in for the next 4 years.

To be honest, we were in for that with Obama too. I was more naive about that but I know that with whoever the Democratic President is, there’s going to be a rage machine against them by the right. It would have happened if Bernie was the Dem nominee or Chaffee or O’Malley or Webb oto.

I found myself pondering just a short while ago if this is a form of “job security” for Comey. There’s been articles recently about the difficulties that the Clinton Transition Team are having because it’s been decades since an incoming administration replaced one from the same party. Been decades since a Democrat replaced a Democrat in the White House, meaning the usual tradition of everybody in office tendering their resignations now is replaced by picking from the slate of party stalwarts.

The reason I say this is “job security” is because Comey has probably been reasoning that (in light of his performance back in June) odds are that if Hillary wanted to keep him, that would be reason for the GOP to want him gone. So with this 11th hour play to put his thumb on the scale again, he might be trying to win back some support from the home team. “See fellas, I’ll be your tool in the FBI, be the guy who will totally investigate her whenever you ask, just please don’t let her fire me!”

I was just about to ask whether Comey was being leaned on by Issa or one of the other freaks in Congress, or whether he was going full metal J. Edgar Hoover and interfering with the workings of government.

I will never vote Republican again as long as I live. Fucking pack of treacherous vipers.

A repost, but as on point as ever:

The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but, on the contrary, that it was impossible to avoid joining in. Within thirty seconds any pretense was always unnecessary. A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledge-hammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric current, turning one even against one’s will into a grimacing, screaming lunatic. And yet the rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion which could be switched from one object to another like the flame of a blowlamp. — 1984

It does, but the GOP can be long-thinkers at times and they’re already gearing up for years of new Clinton “scandals” and subsequent investigations. Firing the guy who “got too close” is no doubt something they’re already weaving into their 2018 campaign ads.

Which is why it was abysmally stupid for Obama to nominate Comey in the first place. Rat-fuckers is what Republicans are. Rat-fucking is the only thing they do. President Obama in 2013 had to be the single person on earth most acutely aware of this fact. And he went ahead and nominated a goddamn Republican for FBI director.

Comey’s probably now going to try to slow-walk the whole thing. Rush to the cameras with “new evidence,” then when pressed to present go “Well, we don’t talk about investigations…” and assure us he’ll get the emails to us…sometime next year. FBI’s gotta have sufficient time to go over them with a fine-toothed comb, dontchaknow.

25
Stanley Sea  Oct 28, 2016 • 5:03:33pm

My guess is they found Huma’s emails on Dick Head’s computer.

THAT was enough for them to want to investigate. Everything Huma did is now suspect.

It’s why I said that he thinks this is “job security,” because he figures that he’s now got her hemmed in. If she keeps him then he gets to continue being a hatchet-man for his party, and if she boots him then his party claims that his replacement is a “puppet” and he becomes a “hero” to the party with a guaranteed job somewhere in the private sector and a book deal to tell the “truth” about Hillary.

LISBON, MAINE—OK, I’ve had it. Fire all the writers. This TV series called 2016 has jumped the shark at a sufficient altitude that it is now clearing the rings of Saturn. I’m kicking around Stephen King country in northern New England with El Caudillo del Mar-A-Lago and, by the time I get to this tight little burg that probably is only 40 percent likely to be inhabited by vampires, the story of the election takes another violent twist and we find that the world’s greatest democracy has ended up (again) at Anthony Weiner’s zipper.

He probably thought he was going to pull a crafty one by sending the letter, figuring the House GOP wouldn’t be so dumb as to make the letter public. So that when the press came to him and the FBI looking for answers, he could do the whole “We don’t comment on ongoing investigations” and then smirk as they went wild with speculation.

“Cold civil war” is a term I like to use for this conflict. IMO it is very real and is ignored by too many Democrats. Many Republicans have no interest in democratic self-rule or the ideals, traditions and structures of US government, and will happily destroy anything they see as an impediment to their seizure of power.

I sometimes wonder if President Obama puts too much faith in the good will of people. To him, it’s politics, or a game, and at some point there will be a consensus, but to them, it’s identity, and they think they have too much to lose.

I can believe this of Obama in 2009. Not of Obama in 2013. The man is not stupid.

I figure Obama appointed him, he should take care of this. Suspect he will and in fine fashion.

We’re now one year into a missing seat on the USSC. That also means the appellate courts normally administered by that justice are a burden to the others.

We’ve already seen Cruz comment on the USSC and his thoughts. And also McCain, though he tried to walk his back.

There’s also been no real budget re-working since 2010. Congress tends to do continuing resolutions. Which means the funding priorities are now 6 years without being reshaped.

There are numerous political appointee slots empty, and they’ve been empty for some time.

Because we are such a materially rich countries, being sloppy like this won’t be obvious immediately.

But bad governance will catch up to us, perhaps in some nastily unintended ways.

Facebook advertisers can exclude specific racial and ethnic groups when placing housing ads in potential violation of federal anti-discrimination housing laws, according to a Pro Publica report.

Using a designation called “Ethnic Affinities,” Facebook lets advertisers target and exclude certain groups of Facebook users when placing ads for a new apartment or a house for sale. Pro Publica says it placed an ad for a housing-related event that excluded African Americans, Asian Americans, and Hispanics.

Speaking of “the media”, which as I noted earlier today is not a very well defined thing, there are of course no end of websites which are nothing but propaganda machines, but try to fool people with their jazzy sounding titles.

But then we have another problem - those websites which are legitimate and started with good intent, but which are drifting in tabloidism.

I’ve noticed this with the old standby phys.org . Once a collector of science news, and then over-run by press releases, now is more and more into click-baity headlines.

In this case, it would be to ask Comey why he was leaking information about an FBI probe. As this is appearing more and more political, Chaffetz is not about to put Comey under oath where the Democrats on the committee can question him about it.

Just talked to my step-father in Chicago (awfully tough to get a call through to Chicago tonight - five failed attempts).

He says no Chicago television station is reporting the updates to James Comey’s letter, and are still reporting it as E-mails related to Hillary Clinton’s E-mail server. He pointed out one station (not FOX) has a continuous chyron rolling over and over again the initial story without correction.

I pointed him here to get the correct information.

There’s apparently some me kind of massive AT&T outage throughout the Midwest.

I don’t suppose he is obligated to do that, but with the stink of politics behind this I stand by my statement: the Utah senator is not going to put Comey under oath so the Democrats can ask about this.

Note also that Hillary Clinton and John Podesta also want the information out now that Comey gave his rodent-copulating letter.

in this instance, it appear that Comey tried to do the right thing but did it in such a fashion that it allowed the GOP to try and make something out of it… okay, he tried to inform the committe that a new source (of likely the same e-mails that they had already examined) but they came by it via the Weiner invvestigation. So, does he try and slow walk it because it that’s what is done in an election year based on FBI protocols since the bureau’s inception or does he try and get ahead of a potential leak that would spur all kinds of mayhem.

So he picked option B and the GOP went ahead and did the very thing he was trying to avoid by taking his statement and spinning it in the “best” way possible for them. Apparently no lessons were learned by his previous attempt to handle this issue by adhering to the policy that had long been in place. Instead he attempted to thread that needle with a carrot while wearing mittens. Now, the GOP got their narrative, Comey’s reputation is complete and total shit and we’re going to find out that this is exactly jack shit but the GOP STILL gets their narrative over the weekend and most of the media who are STILL wired for the horserace and anything anti-Clinton will gleefully speculate and never have to retract a fucking thing.

That is simply infuriating.

Comey is a legal professional. If he writes a letter that is ambiguous enough to mean different things to different people, there’s a good chance it was intentional, which suggests ratfucking.

About the only thing I’ve seen in this mess to indicate possible good faith by Comey is that the letter apparently had to be a rush job to pre-empt a likely leak.

Yeah, that was going to be my remark, that Comey put enough ambiguity into that letter to drive a semi through. He knew that he was basically giving his buddies in Congress a blank cheque to spin whatever “She’s been caught lying again!” story they wanted. It’s just like how he insisted that his June press conference editorial was to justify his actions, when really all it was was his standing at the podium and going right up to the point of accusing her of a crime but not doing so.

The man is a career lawyer with years as a US Attorney and DAG under his belt. He knows just how far he can push the rules before he’s broken them. There’s no reason to believe that his action in this was anything but a deliberate attempt to throw the GOP a bone in the last weeks of the election.

If Comey hadn’t stolen the news-cycle today, the following might have gotten more attention:

Black Donald Trump supporter, mistaken for protestor, gets escorted out of rally and called a “thug” by Trump

Donald Trump called his African-American supporter a “thug” and threw him out of a rally in North Carolina, the Charlotte News & Observer reported. The GOP presidential nominee apparently mistook the black man for a protestor.

“Were you paid $1,500 to be a thug?” Trump sneered at Nash County resident C.J. Cary.

According to the News & Observer, Cary stood about 20-30 feet from the stage at the Kinston Jet Center Wednesday night and shouted “Donald” while waving his document to try to get Trump’s attention.

Apparently mistaking Cary for a protestor, Trump yelled to his security guards, “You can get him out. Get him out!”

[…]

From here: Accused ‘thug’ escorted out of Trump’s Kinston rally says he’s actually a supporter

[…]

Cary said he wasn’t there to protest Trump’s appearance. In fact, he said, he supports the Republican presidential nominee. He just wants to see Trump act more polite and welcoming to minorities.

[…]

The guy, Cary, wrote this a while back:

Trump As A Racist? Hell to The No

[…]

If Donald was a Racist, is there any who think I would keep such a secret? He would have to be a Racist against me. A Black Man, of course he would.

[…]

And yet today he still writes:

How could someone be so unaware of reality?

Simply put: he’s a Je$u$ mark. His websites (he has at least 4) and social media is full of hyper-religiosity.

Just like Graham Jr. and Falwell Jr. and the rest who are plying the Je$u$ card as a justification for supporting Drumpfskind, so is this guy Cary.

I think the bone is the soup base for after her inauguration. They know the race is done and Hillary will win by a landslide. This is their birther thing to illegitimize her administration.

However the current headline on the website is:

Note how the feed calls out the “Clinton Case”, as if there really is still a case for the “Clinton Case”.

Seriously. Josh Marshall at TPM is making the case that Comey was being naïve about how his actions are impacting the election.

Josh has forgotten more about politics than I’ll ever know, but I think he’s wrong on this. Republicans at this point are so fucking out to lunch about Clinton (both of them) at this point, they’re willing to burn down the country to get rid of her.

To be fair, we can’t smear all Serbs with the same brush. Would you like it if someone read the stories of Yezidi survivors from Da’esh brutality state the same about their views of Muslims being heavily impacted as well?

There were Serbs who bitterly opposed the war criminals amongst them. There were Serbs who bravely protected Bosnian Muslims and Croats from harm. There are still many Serbs (even if they are a small minority) in Serbia who are fighting genocide denial of their kin.

I know how you feel about what happened there, but we can’t fall into the same trap as them.

Hey gang.

Just a drive-by posting and I’m out of here. My home internet is now working again. I (and Comcast tech support) thought the modem had finally failed after 10 years. I was going to get a new one after work, but forgot all about it. To my surprise when I got home it was working again perfectly. (I think there was some local issue)

Got to get up early, YUUGE day tomorrow. We (the shop) are doing Underwater Pumpkin Carving, a set of Zombie Apocalypse Dives, and then after dark a haunted underwater trail and a couple of other night dives. I’m going to be either working the dives as a player, setting up the next set of dives between dives and then tearing down and resetting for the next set. Figure I’ll hit the water about 8:30 am or so for my first dive setting stuff up, and my last dive of the night will probably end about 11 pm. Won’t be in the water the whole time, but it will be a good long day. The fact that it’s going to be 82* tomorrow and sunny is just unreal.

Here’s a video of last year’s pumpkin carving.

I probably won’t be back online until sometime Sunday evening. Have a great weekend and whatever you do, don’t squish a stink-bug between your fingers. (My area is just crawling with them at the moment)

High drama at Wrigley, Baez getting ready for 2-2-2 pitch in the bottom of the ninth, men on second and third.

Yup, sometimes it’s all down to the pitcher staring down the last batter. The classic duel in the bottom of the ninth.

As the radio announcers earlier in the game noted, this game might come down to a single bad pitch (bad in the sense it allows a run). That is exactly what happened.

The game was a classic pitching duel, not like the blowouts in the first two games.

Great, tense game that ended 1-0. Why Americans pan soccer is beyond me. Runs, like goals, are important. A game like this is much more fun to watch than a 12-3 blowout.

I wanted Cleveland to lose because of their shitty racist logo. They actually got sued for it when they were up here in Toronto:

Name, logo of ‘Cleveland team’ won’t be banned from Blue Jays game telecast

Just hours before they were set to face the Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre, an Ontario Superior Court judge has ruled that the Cleveland Indians can use its controversial name and logo.

A legal challenge against the Cleveland Indians, Major League Baseball and Rogers Communications by indigenous activist Douglas Cardinal was heard on Monday shortly before the baseball teams were set to take the field for Game 3 of the American League Championship Series.

Judicial Watch claims partial credit for FBI letter:

judicialwatch.org

The FBI’s seeming decision to reopen the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s mishandling of classified information is astonishing. Once again, we suspect our Freedom of Information Act and other investigations have spurred the FBI to act. This decision highlights the corruption, favoritism, and incompetence in the FBI/Justice Department investigation of Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton’s email misconduct and lies, aided and abetted by the Obama administration, have created a national crisis. The FBI needs to disclose more information about what it found and when - the American voters deserve answers now.

Judicial Watch helped break open the Clinton email scandal and, no matter what the FBI does, will independently continue its historic litigation and investigation.

With their historic “donate” button at the bottom.

Playing through Final Fantasy VII, I have thoughts.

A) Thank Allah the translation has been fixed. I am not being jarred out of the story every few minutes by a hilarious bungled translation.

B) Someone goofed up the music, because different Music is playing where there were previously different, and more appropriate songs. Sound effects are also a bit janky in places.

C) I am more sensitive than last time, so sad moments get to me more. At first, I thought I was past being scared or creeped out by the game, but Sephiroth is still fucking creepy. They did a great job with him as a villain, and he has held up, I think.

re: #88 allegro

I figure Obama appointed him, he should take care of this. Suspect he will and in fine fashion.

Obama has to fire him after the election. According to the Washington Post, FBI Directors are appointed for 10 years. Obama would leave Clinton in a horrible situation otherwise. The only reason I believe Obama would appoint a Republican is to get around Congressional obstruction. The FBI is involved in too many important security issues to have it go unmanned for too long. Democrats are screwed either way it seems.

That is a dangerous trait. The director of the FBI has great power at his disposal. Congress has seen to fit to provide FBI directors with nearly unfettered independence, including a 10-year term designed to stretch beyond any one president’s tenure.

re: #301 Mattand

Seriously, fuck Comey. He either knew what he was doing would help Trump, or he is allowing the FBI to manipulated by the GOP as an armed extension of Fox News.

That press conference that Comey gave in June or July that made it appear Clinton had done something wrong is all the proof you need that Comey is not naive and is politically motivated.
