Jim Hoft, Stupidest Man on the Internet, Falls for ANOTHER Fake Story, Then Sean Hannity Repeats It

DERP

Jim Hoft is heading for some kind of derp implosion, folks. He’s been posting fake stories nearly every day as the election gets closer, and today he fell for a scam from one of those fake news sites (“Your News Wire,” an obviously shady name if there ever was one) saying that Michelle Obama had deleted all her tweets about Hillary Clinton.

Of course, she didn’t. And Hoft could have discovered this if he’d done the bare minimum of fact-checking and actually looked at her Twitter timeline. Instead he ran with the story right away, with the screaming illiterate headline: Rats Jump Ship=> Michelle Obama Did Scrubs Hillary Clinton from Twitter History?

The rats are jumping ship.

Michelle Obama deletes Hillary tweets from her timeline.

Has @MichelleObama deleted her tweets for the past 3 and a half years?

— Paul Joseph Watson (@PrisonPlanet) November 1, 2016

Barrack Obama’s Husband Michelle Scrubs Hillary Clinton From Twitter History.

The tide has turned.#MAGAhttps://t.co

— Spooky Halley ︻╦╤─ (@HalleyBorderCol) November 1, 2016

Michelle deleted Hillary’s tweets back to 2013.

And this time, Hoft’s ridiculous fake story (that came through Alex Jones crony Paul Joseph Watson) made it up to Fox News ranter Sean Hannity again: Fake story about Obamas, Hillary Clinton ensnares Sean Hannity.

Sean Hannity on Tuesday embraced a piece of fake news about President Obama deleting endorsements of Hillary Clinton from his Twitter account.

Hannity used the made-up news to claim that President Obama’s legacy might be “jail.” The deleted-tweets claim could have been disproven by a quick Twitter search.

The progression of events illustrates how fake news stories expand and spread from fringe web sites to nationally syndicated radio shows with millions of listeners. In this case, the fake news originated on a dubious site called “Your News Wire,” which publishes a mix of true, slanted and made-up news. Then, like a game of telephone, by the time the story got to Hannity, even the fake facts were wrong.

The site claimed that “Michelle Obama has scrubbed all references to Hillary Clinton from both of her Twitter accounts” and implied that it was the result of FBI investigations into Clinton.

A thicket of far-right-wing web sites picked up the story and ran with it. Red State Watcher said the news was “breaking!” and News Ninja 2012 said it was “suspicious.” “The rats are jumping ship,” The Gateway Pundit wrote.

Right wing bloggers and hacks like Hannity have now completely abandoned any pretense of caring about facts or reality, folks. They’re desperate, and going for broke. The truth about this story has been out for several hours, but Hoft has yet to correct his post. (And he probably won’t, because who cares?)

The thing is, the only people who are going to read and believe this stuff are loons who already hate Hillary and Michelle with the heat of a supernova, so it really has very little effect all on its own. But with Hillary Clinton, we’re seeing the cumulative effects of thousands of these fake stories repeated over and over for decades until even some people who should know better start semi-believing them.

Because a few tweets matter when there’s hours of video of Michelle Obama supporting Clinton?

I didn’t realize that this is really the Laura Ingraham—>Matt Drudge—>RWNJ media model that Keith Olbermann was describing the other day. Truth doesn’t matter. It picks up a sheen of truth as it flies through the air until it just gets accepted as fact. I really don’t think Jim is stupid. I think this is his job and he does it well.

I think they are mostly believing their own bullshit at this point. As GDF has said several times, it is basically impossible to consistently lie without eventually coming to believe the lies are true. God knows the GOP propaganda outfits have done enough lying to get this effect up to full force.

We have one of their graduates here. I don’t know whether their times at Chapman coincided.

That’s me. Hewitt was teaching con law while I was there, but I didn’t take his class (many of my classmates used to say that he used it for show prep). I actually took con law with John Eastman (Chairman of NOM). Tim Canova, who challenged DWS in Florida this year, was also one of my professors.

Politics aside, all three of them were good guys. Fair to everyone, regardless of where they came down on legal theories or politics. I was a bit more of an ideological libertarian back then, so I didn’t really agree with them on a lot of different things, but they were always fair. I also remember Hewitt giving me a hard time because I skipped some religion and law symposium to watch a Dodger game in the student lounge (even though a friend of my came down from another school to go to it).

I read somewhere that the RNC gets a % of the money Drumpfskind raises (same idea with previous campaigns.)

This is what the GOP runs in California. Because he’s unopposed, he’s also going to win.

Meet the unopposed Assembly candidate who says climate change is a good thing that hurts ‘enemies on the equator’

Randy Voepel, who will almost certainly be the next state assemblyman from northeastern San Diego, believes that climate change is good.

“Our enemies are on the equator,” Voepel told a reporter nine years ago, adding that a warmer climate would make it worse for them.

Voepel still feels the same way. “Most of the Muslim nations are in the hot areas of the world,” Voepel said in an interview with The Times last week.

Voepel, the Republican mayor of the San Diego suburb of Santee, is preparing to replace termed-out Republican Brian Jones in the state Assembly later this year. Voepel’s opponent abandoned his campaign in April — too late to remove his name from the primary ballot — and has endorsed Voepel.

In the 71st Assembly District, which covers northeastern San Diego County and a small portion of Riverside, Republicans outnumber Democrats by nearly 15 percentage points. Voepel, a 66-year-old who is planning to retire from his insurance brokerage company after the November election, described himself as “pretty right-wing.”

But some of Voepel’s opinions and actions go further than the party’s typical positions in California.

Well, Car Thief + Drumpfskind would be the worse of possible outcomes.

But I think Car Thief is in trouble exactly for the reason Drumpfskind was nominated by the Republicans: our demographics are begging for a change and any system that can’t bend with the wind will be broken.

As near as I can tell, the make-up of coastal San Diego county and southern Orange county is changing, slowly. Once the stronghold of Republicanism, an influx of young people and increased urbanization is turning the tide against ideological purity and more towards practical governance.

…Voepel, the Republican mayor of the San Diego suburb of Santee, …

Santee used to be called “Klantee” because that is where the poor white folk lived (cheaper than in the city of SD proper.)

Times have changed that somewhat, as the county population continues to grow (county now well above 3 million), but the NE quadrant of the county and of the metropolitan area is still dominated by the old white conservative base.

Poor guy. I truly pity anybody so dumb that he could do two tours in ‘Nam without learning anything.
Maybe I should be envious of his incredible luck for having survived at all.

During Bill Clinton’s time, some Republicans wished for his name to be on the Vietnam Wall.

I’m trying with all my will not to wish the same for this man. It’s hard going, the way that Republicans endlessly valorize our war dead.

I’ve already posted my vote for Hillz and I am pretty sure that MD is so solidly blue in the population centers that he may as well flush it down the toilet. Eastern Shore and Western MD are red, but population count, not land area.

Last i checked, Hillary has a solid ~40% lead over tRump in MD. So yeah, that money is more wasted than Charlie Sheen at an all-you-can-eat pot brownie shop in Amsterdam…

Tehran is actually north of Los Angeles (35” 41’ vs. 34” 03’)

AFAIK, the only major Islamic nation on the equator is Indonesia, which the last time I looked wasn’t our enemy. Most of the areas of conflict are at latitudes ranging from that of northern Mexico to roughly that of Georgia and South Carolina. Deep ignorance, even of simple geography, is as Republican as race hatred, gun fetishism, and the belief that taxes are outright theft.

I expect bigger changes between 2016 and 2032 than we’ve seen between 2000 and 2016.

The last 16 years in the US has been strongly affected by 9/11. That and the Iraq war shaped our international relationships and our economy.

I have no idea if a major conflict will break out in the next 16 years.

We have a good chance to see the first summer without Arctic sea ice by then, though.

SS will need to be changed before then too, as 2032 is right in the window where big things have to happen to keep the balance books balanced. So for those of us who are still alive and retired the early 2030’s become very important as far as the politics of retirement.

About 1/3 of Tennessee is in the Eastern time zone, and the rest is in Central.

Weird little pieces of Alabama operate on Eastern Time, officially or not. One is a surgical hospital in AL that is tightly sattellited to its “mother” clinic across the river in GA.

A number of states are in two time zones:

[Embedded content]

This has to do with the economic centers of the location. Idaho is the best example. The majority of Malheur County in Oregon is economically tied to Boise, ID, so the Mountain Time Zone juts out into Oregon a little. And the panhandle of Idaho (Coeur d’Alene, Sandpoint) is more economically tied to eastern Washington, so they’re in the Pacific Time Zone.

re: #141 freetoken

The election of 2032 will be the first election in which those school children will have an impact to change America. In part because it will be after redistricting post 2030 Census, and the state legislatures will be affected in 2030 by the kids in school today.

Since the poll is described as K-12, if the sampling is grade-proportional, roughly a quarter of those kids will be voting in 2020, roughly half by 2024. Your point about redistricting is very important, but one of the few good things about gerrymandering is that time often overcomes it fairly quickly in many districts.

I never thought of Florida as “the south”. This is where family history kicks in. Indiana was nominally Northern, but the southern part of the state (near Kentucky) had some southern sympathizers and was fairly divided. I’ve also learned that one of my relatives left Kentucky for Indiana just prior to the Civil War. My suspicion - and it is only suspicion based on vague speculation and what little research I could gather - is that he left his slaveholder family and ran with an abolitionist family friend, married a Hoosier bride, and settled down in fish country.

North FL, from the top of the Panhandle down to somewhere not far north of Orlando, Sanford, and Melbourne, are basically extensions of south Alabama and south Georgia; Tampa and Miami are basically NYC South.

Decatur Deb probably knows this more than anyone here, but I had a little taste of north FL last week while taking a long weekend getaway from Nashville down in Panama City Beach; as soon as I got off I-65 just south of Montgomery to backroad it all the way down to the ocean, Trump signs were everywhere.

Pesky Irish! But I did find a baptismal record of a great uncle of my grandmother’s that had his parents place of birth in Ireland listed so that was a lead but the catch is both their surnames are so common so even if I went there, I’d may as well be looking for a Smith or a Brown.

It is a bit of an eye-opener, when one discovers that certain wedges in the pedigree are from a different culture and social status.

I have ancestor who were relatively well off and left documentation. They (at least the males) were literate.

OTOH, there are other lines in the tree where clearly the ancestors are simple folk, illiterate, just moving around to try and make a living. What few records are left is because governments may have tracked them here or there.

The English pulped some of the Irish records. Then there was a great fire that destroyed more of the Irish records.

However, there is a substantial effort in Ireland to recreate the past, with lots of work on genealogy and DNA testing. That may help fill in some holes.

It’s amazing to think about what our ancestors did. I mean it’s easy to just assume farmer. I actually got in touch with a lady in Germany who is a great granddaughter of my second grandfather who brought my relatives with my surname to the U.S. She was telling me that historically that the men in our family were potters. And it turns out the second great grandfather was an upholsterer. Never ever would have guessed that. Families statuses come and go though. One of the Irish names I have is from a prominent Norman-Irish lord but I have no doubt that his subsequent descendants were far from nobility.

The English pulped some of the Irish records. Then there was a great fire that destroyed more of the Irish records.

However, there is a substantial effort in Ireland to recreate the past, with lots of work on genealogy and DNA testing. That may help fill in some holes.

Let’s hope so. Yeah though, I read about the Four Courts fire of 1922. Damn shame. There were also records that were destroyed during the outbreak of WWI too. Sigh. It’s how history works though. I am very obsessive. I just wish I could name a place so I could hope to visit one day. I do know where specifically in the other countries though and have even done some talking with family there. One even sent me a historical calendar of the village.

Federal censuses in the United States only started listing names of household members in 1850. Births, deaths, and marriages are sporadically recorded around and before that time period, depending on the state.

The Civil War also created a lot of gaps through the burning of court houses, both North and South. A lot of people had an interest in destroying some records.

I know anecdotal observations do not equal data, but the early voting numbers from NC are surprising. The peeps I was working with were adamant about early voting. The first thing they said every morning to their co-workers was “have you voted yet?” One woman had a daughter who was going to school in Charlotte, but convinced her NOT to change her registration from Durham in case they fucked with her vote—she drove to Charlotte to bring the daughter home for the weekend so she could vote. Out of the 100+ peeps at the job and the 20 or so on my crew, all but two were solid and enthusiastic Hillary. One woman, a transplant from Chicago, was going to leave the president line blank, and one of my peeps was toying with voting for Stein—I tried to disabuse her of that thought—but I think I scared her so I never brought it up again.

I had one guy working for me who was a crunch granola type—older guy, Birkenstocks, rode his bike 15 miles to come to work. Figured him for an aging hippie. Then he asked me what I thought of the
“bathroom bill” and I told him exactly what I thought. I asked him what he thought and he responded (in a truly pompous, Republican tone), “I believe in traditional values.” I countered with, “Oh, so you believe in treating all people with kindness, right?” He had nothing further to say.

Arggh—so exhausted—I need to go to bed and sleep for many hours—if that’s possible between coughing fits…

It’s not even talk about a perfect world for a lot of them. A lot of is wallowing in their own misery because they’re not getting everything they want now. 10 years ago same sex marriage seemed like a pipe dream. And we have a president that fought hard for its legalization. These assholes don’t care about things like that. They’d rather bitch about purity. It’s not even the helpful kind of idealism where they use their idealism to make the world a better place. Now to be fair, I do have a guy I went to college with who is a Green guy who actually does do what he can but a lot of these types I see would rather bitch about how they don’t have their purity pony rather than working one little way to make their surrounding area a better place.

Remarkably on topic:

Planet Earth II and the bloodthirsty evolution of the nature documentary

[…]

Despite the success of Bambi in 1942, Disney had struggled to convince RKO, his distributor, that anyone would pay to watch films of animals in the wild. But after Seal Island won an Oscar and became a hit, the struggle was to meet demand. By the time the series finished in 1960, there had been 14 True-Life Adventure films, eight of them Oscar-winners. They were now fixtures in classrooms all over the world. However, as Disney’s nephew Roy, who produced the series, later put it: “We kept that disclaimer a little longer than we should have.”

[…]

But most infamous of all was the lemming sequence, also in White Wilderness. Ironically, the film-makers set out of disprove the myth that the animals sometimes commit mass suicide. Instead, they show what appears to be hundreds of lemmings “migrating” senselessly into the sea. “It’s not given to man to understand all of nature’s mysteries,” says Winston Hibler in his best fireside tones. “But, as nearly as he can surmise, it would appear that these lemmings consider this body of water just another lake.”

In fact, man did know better, or some men did - because the footage was shot in Alberta, Canada, where there aren’t any lemmings. To fix this problem, the crew paid children in Canada’s northern Manitoba region 25¢ per lemming to round some up. The animals were then driven south and placed on purpose-built turntables to make it seem like a horde of them was passing the camera. Finally, they were taken to the Bow river and shovelled off the bank. “Soon,” we are told, to the sound of a mournful clarinet, “the Arctic Sea is dotted with tiny bobbing bodies.”

[…]

Yup, I remember watching these lemmings.

Hordes of lemmings…

The interesting thing I have been seeing looking at some material that was collected for my brother is how much a rural region in the 19th century will intermarry given half a chance. I am looking at this one tree and seeing the same family names pop up in multiple places in the tree. And it turned out that my great-great-grandfathers married daughters of the same man, so my family tree on the one side branches out and then merges back together.

Yeah that’s quite true. Honestly, thinking about my own immigrant ancestors makes me have a lot of respect for today’s immigrants. Certainly, it’s probably a little safer getting here now than it was then but to leave your home that’s all your family has ever known for a new land? That’s courageous. Yeah. It also assumes that everyone can just take time off to protest whenever the Congressional R’s reject policy. Honestly, I’m definitely more to the left of Obama and Clinton but I prefer their approach because their way will have long lasting change in a way that even if a nutter like Stein were elected could never do. Stein would be forced to do a lot of things by executive order that could easily be reversed and I highly doubt she would have a capable cabinet either.

Game 6 of the WS seems to be a perfect metaphor for this election right now: The Cubs took an early lead and have held it since the first inning. And the best efforts of the Indians has turned what might have been a blowout game into a five-run deficit. Could the Indians still win? Sure. But as we get closer to the end, they’ve left the part of the game where they could possibly win on mediocre innings and now need awesome innings. Obsessing over the greater than zero chance they still have of pulling it off…that way lies madness.

It’s like being up by a touchdown with a 1 minute and change left and your opponent is out of timeouts. Could they win? Yes but the odds don’t favor it. For a second there, I thought you said that the indians came back and I went holy shit, I need to turn the game back on.

You know maybe Evan should consider primarying Mike Lee down the road or running for Hatch’s spot. I couldn’t vote for him but he appears to be living in reality at least.

Gee, the Libertarians have got their stuff together this time. Too bad their nominee is smoking so much of it.

Some of my liberal Christian friends support him. I don’t know that much about him, but he’s not Trump and not Hillary and not a total crackpot, which already separates him from the rest of the pack.

Yeah, should have worded that a bit better, but I thought my point got through. Could Trump still win next week? Sure. But with the present match-up in terms of polling, he needs a line of states to fall down like dominoes for him, one after the other. If even one fails to fall, it’s over for him. Hillary has so many paths to the presidency that you can make long lists of the states she could afford to lose and still win. But Trump basically only has one right now and it’s a very narrow one.

He’s too conservative for me but he lives in reality at least.

I think what might be happening in Florida is happening in Florida, and Florida alone.

Kinda sad when this has to be said about a political candidate for a modern election. We shouldn’t even be having dealings with candidates who don’t live in reality, and yet Trump is going to win an embarrassingly large proportion of the popular vote.

Even still, Florida is a must win state for him. By the way if it’s 10%, that’s a little higher than average. I think Romney was getting like 90-92% of the registered R vote. And as for North Carolina, you can’t ignore that McCrory is unpopular so you’re going to have a lot of Dems eager to vote his ass out too.

Remember when Jon “Abolish the EPA” Hunstman was seen as a GOP moderate. That’s what the GOP has come to these days where a guy who wants to abolish the EPA is a moderate. Or John Kasich who was actually the defendant in the case that legalized same sex marriage and has signed numerous anti-choice legislation into law and is overall a condescending prick.

Uh, if that poll is accurate, Trump is still in deep shit. Romney enjoyed 93% of the GOP votes cast and still lost by 5 million votes.

Oh, he would be, assuming the poll is remotely near accurate.

However, what I am trying to say is that the defection rate in Florida could be much higher as a result of the somewhat odd fact that Cuban-Americans make up so much of the Republicans down there.

We remembered the same thing. That’s not good news for Trump at all. Not all GOP exiles against Trump are going to be equal.

See what you mean now. Yeah that’s probably it. I’d also imagine Florida Republicans might be a little more moderate than North Carolina ones too.

State records don’t say what Nate is asserting, they don’t break down how demographics voted or indeed return votes at all at this point. What happened in Florida is they called people who they KNEW already voted and asked them directly. Nate is talking about cold calls to people who SAY they’re Republicans who already voted and he’s wrongly attributing those results to the State.

Am I bad a person if it rubs me the wrong way that she’s going to be the first person that many people think of when they hear Slovenia? I don’t think Melania’s a bad person to be truthful though. Her step sons OTOH.

That’s the thing, Hillary doesn’t need that missing 10%+ to vote for her, she just needs to them to vote third party or stay home. Trump needs them and every one he loses is a vote he has to find somewhere else. He started this election needing to win what Romney did and add to it. If he’s losing ground, then he’s losing.
