Daily Kos comment has my exact thoughts on the poll from Florida:

I’m guessing big crossover from Cuban voters and Republican women. If that’s true, the Cuban effect would be limited to Florida, but significant crossover from Republican women would likely have a similar, if smaller, impact in other states. Will be interested to see the unaffiliated voter crosstabs when they come out.

Why in the world does the American suddenly love the Kremlin?

RUSSIAN THEATRE CANCELS JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR AFTER ‘BLASPHEMY’ ACCUSATIONS

A Siberian theatre triggered a storm today by cancelling a staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Jesus Christ Superstar after a pro-Kremlin nationalist group condemned it as blasphemy.

The touring production by Saint Petersburg’s Rock Opera theatre was due to open November 1 in the Musical Theatre of the city of Omsk, but the organisers cancelled it this week following protests by conservative activists.

In a report from Omsk, Regnum news agency wrote today that the scandal “has prompted a major public reaction”.

It quoted art critic Vadim Klimov as saying: “Today you cannot say that Russia is a secular state.”

An obscure group called Family, Love, Fatherland had appealed to regional authorities to stop the staging and applied to hold a demonstration, accusing the long-running musical of “non-stop blasphemy” and “mockery of faith”.

I always thought Weld by far the more sensible of him and Johnson. In fact, I was surprised Weld became Johnson’s running mate. I think he wanted to give street cred to the LP by having two governors on the ticket and if Johnson had a different running mate, he would have gone with one of the more kooky elements of the LP. The inner dynamics of the LP are actually pretty interesting to me.

Ok, showed up on the campus around 4:45… the doors opened at 4:30. I live pretty close to the campus so things were a bit chaotic, but honestly, it was a really long line of angry white people.

There were barricades set up separating the angry white folks from pretty much everyone else. Priebus talked, I’m pretty sure Walker talked next, then thee Donald came on. I have video. I’ll go through it tomorrow, but it’s pretty much exactly how’d you expect a Trump rally to go down. A bunch of confusion, a lot of older white people, and a pretty big sound system.

Wolf Street: Is Merger-Mania October the Classic Paroxysm before it All Comes Unglued?

October was merger-mania month with a pre-election surge during the waning days: five of the largest 11 US-focused Mergers & Acquisitions in 2016 were announced in the last 10 days of October, including two that broke all-time industry records.

The mania was topped off by two big announcements on Monday:

GE’s $25-billion acquisition of Baker Hughes. Since 2008, the M&A-meister, financial engineering specialist, and industrial powerhouse has gobbled up 51 companies of $1 billion or more in value.
CenturyLink’s $24-billion acquisition of Level 3 Communications.
In the prior days, three big deals made investment bankers salivate:

AT&T’s $85.7-billion deal to acquire Time Warner, announced on October 22, the hugest deal in the history of media, even huger than the prior hugest media deal ever, the AOL Time Warner deal that ended as a spectacular success along with the rest of the mania at the time. But Wall Street instantly refuted what everyone had been thinking from the very first moment, that this was most decidedly and in fact, doubtlessly, not the next AOL Time Warner.
Qualcomm’s $39.2-billion acquisition of NXP Semiconductors, announced October 27, the biggest deal in the history of the semiconductor industry.
British American Tobacco’s $46.9-billion acquisition of Reynolds American - the 57.8% it didn’t already own - announced on October 21.
This pushed US deal volume in October to $330.3 billion, the second highest month on record, after July’s $332.3 billion! And this comes after the all-time record year 2015.

And then there’s the lag time between the record-breaking mega merger data that blows a hole into the ship, and the sinking of the ship. The lag could be a year or longer.

For example, last time: Private equity firms KKR, TPG Capital, and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners announced in February 2007 that they would acquire the Texas utility TXU; the deal became final in October 2007. It was the biggest, most leveraged, craziest buyout ever, and it would ultimately collapse into bankruptcy. With hindsight, it was the final deal-making paroxysm. The stock market turned south the moment the deal became final, at first in a very casual manner. It took another 11 months before Lehman imploded and all heck broke lose.

Ya might want to read the whole thing.

“By moving to zero fossil fuels, we save so much money that it’s actually enough to pay the costs of the green energy transformation. So when you balance out the savings in our healthcare and the savings in the military where we no longer need these wars for oil that consume half of our discretionary budget and almost half of your income taxes, we save so much money through those two offsets, also by moving our subsidies tens of billions into green energy subsidies that we can ensure that this is a win especially for poor people because they are the first in line for these jobs which are good wage, living wage, jobs.”

Simon Johnson: The Consequences of a Trump Shock

WASHINGTON, DC - With the United States’ presidential election on November 8, and a series of elections and other political decisions fast approaching in Europe, now is a good time to ask whether the global economy is in good enough shape to withstand another major negative shock. The answer, unfortunately, is that growth and employment around the world look fragile. A big adverse surprise - like the election of Donald Trump in the US - would likely cause the stock market to crash and plunge the world into recession.

Trump promises to boost US growth immediately to 4-5%, but this is pure fantasy. It is far more likely that his anti-trade policies would cause a sharp slowdown, much like the British are experiencing.
In fact, the impact of a Trump victory on the US could well be worse. Whereas British Prime Minister Theresa May’s government wants to close the UK’s borders to immigrants from the EU, it does want trade with the world. Trump, on the other hand, is determined to curtail imports through a variety of policies, all of which are well within the power of a president. He would not need congressional approval to slam the brakes on the US economy.

Even in the best of times, US policymakers often do not think enough about the impact of their actions on the rest of the world. Trump’s trade-led recession would tip Europe back into full-blown recession, which would likely precipitate a serious banking crisis. If this risk were not contained - and the probability of a European banking debacle is already disconcertingly high - there would be a further negative spiral. Either way, the effects on emerging markets and all lower-income countries would be dramatic.
Investors in the stock market currently regard a Trump presidency as a relatively low-probability development. But, while the precise consequences of bad policies are always hard to predict, if investors are wrong and Trump wins, we should expect a big markdown in expected future earnings for a wide range of stocks - and a likely crash in the broader market.

Simon Johnson, a former chief economist of the IMF, is a professor at MIT Sloan, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, and co-founder of a leading economics blog, The Baseline Scenario. He is the co-author, with James Kwak, of White House Burning: The Founding Fathers, Our National Debt, and Why It Matters to You.

(ok, I loathe that he’s involved in the Peterson Institute, but outside of that….)

A survey in Government Executive notes a large number of people would leave government service if Mr. Trump won the election.

govexec.com

In addition, …

As reported exclusively by Government Executive.

Hillary Clinton has cemented her lead over Donald Trump among federal government employees, according to an independent Government Business Council / govexec.com poll released on October 28, 2016. Clinton receives 53% of the vote, compared with 34% for Trump; in addition, Clinton holds a net favorability score 37 points higher than Trump’s.

Respondents voting for Clinton because they fully support her as a candidate (59%) outnumber those voting for her because she represents the most viable alternative to Trump (42%). The opposite is true for Trump voters: a majority support him because they see him as the most viable alternative to Clinton (62%), versus the 38% who fully support him as a candidate.

SR 1309 - Silent Counter-Coup by 17 Intel Agencies To Stop Crooked Clintons

Good evening, I’m still reporting on an ongoing counter-coup being run by patriotic members of 17 U.S. intelligence agencies to stop the Clinton Crime syndicate from proceeding with the rigging of the coming election. According to a 4 minute video, done by Dr. Steve Pieczenik, a Harvard and MIT-educated psychiatrist who has written 26 New York Times Best Sellers, the Clinton coup has been put down by an intelligence community counter-coup, effective at noon today. Dr. Pieczenik has great contacts in the American intelligence community.

Note that in marked contrast to the usual RWNJ tin foilery, the claimants actually support this conspiracy.

Steve Pieczenik

Wikipedia:

In 1992, Pieczenik told Newsday that in his professional opinion, President Bush[clarification needed] was “clinically depressed”. As a result, he was brought up on an ethics charge before the American Psychiatric Association and reprimanded. He subsequently quit the APA.[4]

He calls himself a “maverick troublemaker. You make your own rules. You pay the consequences.”[4]

The role he played in the negotiations to bring about the release of Aldo Moro, an Italian politician kidnapped by the Red Brigades, is fraught with controversy.[citation needed]

On May 3, 2011, radio host Alex Jones aired an interview in which Pieczenik claimed that Osama bin Laden had died of Marfan syndrome in 2001 shortly after the September 11 attacks, and that the attacks on the United States on 9/11 were part of a false flag operation by entities within the American government, the Israeli leadership and Mossad.[31]

On October 20, 2011 in an interview with Alex Jones, Pieczenik claimed that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was alive, and said, “There’s no way they killed Muammar Gaddafi, that’s not our operating mode and I’ve been involved in 30 years with the takeouts and regime changes.” He also criticised President Barack Obama, calling him an “obsessional pathological liar”.[32][33]

On September 16, 2012, during an interview with Alex Jones, Pieczenik stated that Israel planned to initiate war with Iran during Yom Kippur 2012 unless ex-Mossad and ex-Shin Bet agents assassinated Benjamin Netanyahu.[34]

On March 27, 2013, Pieczenik claimed that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax and a false flag event.[35]

On 9 May 2013, Pieczenik claimed that the 2012 Benghazi attack was the result of a turf war between the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the military intelligence. He suggested that the CIA wished to get rid of General David Petraeus, and wanted to get John O. Brennan, through his illegal SOCOM unit, to arm Syria.[36]

Need I say more?

WASHINGTON, DC - VoteVets PAC and Priorities USA are releasing a new television ad today titled “Michelle,” featuring Michelle DeFord, who lost her son, SGT. David Johnson, to a roadside bomb, in Iraq. SGT. Johnson joined the National Guard after 9/11.

In the ad, DeFord painfully describes the “sound of the boots” walking up the stairs, when she received a next-of-kin notification of her son’s death. She says when she watched Donald Trump’s interview, in which he questioned Ghazala Khan not speaking at the Democratic National Convention, she felt “such a sense of outrage.”

She goes on to say, “I would like to tell Donald Trump what it feels like; the sense of emptiness, that only losing a child can bring. Those people should be honored and treated with kindness for the rest of their life. And I don’t think Donald Trump will ever understand that.”

More fallout from Brexit:

Britain’s service sector will see its exports drop up to 60 per cent after leaving the European single market, even with a free-trade agreement with the EU in place, according to research from a leading think-tank.

A new study from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, to be published on Wednesday, says that signing a free-trade agreement with the EU will not recoup any loss in services exports, but would reduce the long-term fall in goods exports from between 58-65 per cent to between 35-44 per cent.

…In theory, the falls in exports could be reduced if Britain managed to sign a deep bilateral agreement with the EU, including good coverage of the services sector. But Monique Ebell, the author of the report, said: “The average FTA for services at the moment is not very comprehensive and tends not to do very much.”

In 2014, 40 per cent of Britain’s services trade, and 56 per cent of its goods trade, was with other European Economic Area members, meaning that the overall fall in British exports would be 24 per cent for services and 20-25 per cent for goods.

Trump is placing a long-shot bet to win a handful of states. It could overturn the electoral map

With one week before election day, Donald Trump spent the bulk of Tuesday campaigning in Wisconsin, a state that has not backed a Republican for president since 1984.

His unorthodox visit came on the heels of trips to Michigan and Pennsylvania, states that also haven’t gone red since the 1980s.

For the final stretch of the presidential race, the GOP nominee has embarked on a strategy of long-shot bids, holding rallies and airing ads in states that have been reliably Democratic in recent elections. Trump’s gambit sacrifices face time in battleground states, but if successful would upend the political map and likely hand him the White House.

“The Trump campaign is on the offensive and expanding our presence in battleground states into blue states,” David Bossie, Trump’s deputy campaign manager, told reporters Tuesday.

Look, with the parameters you’ve stated here, staying home and listening to the game is a win-win, even if the Cubbies lose. But tell me: Isn’t there a sports bar somewhere in Cheyenne that has decent food and where you can actually watch the game while you have dinner and a drink or two?

In other news:

Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette Marit visit eastern Oslo

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon and Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette Marit of Norway were on an official visit today to the district «Gamle Oslo” in Norway’s capital, Oslo.

[…]

The visit to “Gamle Oslo” was concluded in Oslo prison. Here the Crown Prince and the Crown Princess met several of the inmates and learned more about the opportunities adult inmates have to educate themselves while they are serving their time. Just before they left the prison, the two were served food and coffee made by inmates attending the prison’s barista course.

“Gamle Oslo” (English: Old Oslo) is a part of Oslo with a bad reputation. Crime rates are high compared to the rest of Oslo and many parts of the district are marked by cultures of ethnic minorities from the Middle East and Asia. This area in Oslo has a lot of medieval buildings. It has therefore been natural to highlight this and present Oslo’s history as a medieval town for locals and tourists.

How very modern of them.

Anyway, the “ethnic minorities” are relatively few in Norway, as unlike next door Sweden, they don’t let in many immigrants.

Haakon himself carries the name of great men of old, but his claim to the throne is not based on the old Viking kings and he’s no more descended from them than I. Rather, the current Norwegian royal family is from the Dano-German House of Glücksburg which is from cadet lines (ducal) from the same stock the have sprouted so much of the current European royal families. The Norwegian royal family recently have only existed by marrying in Swedish and Welch women.

Anyway, I guess one can’t have a kingdom without a king, so long live the king, I guess.

So I go to pay my internet bill… and discover that Cox has raised prices again. I don’t remember them emailing me of the changes, if they did.

Here’s what it says on the bill this month:

To support these ongoing product and technology investments and increases in business costs, we are making changes to our Internet rates effective October 6, 2016. These changes will be reflected on this bill statement. If you are a Price Lock Guarantee customer or
currently have an active Service Agreement, the rates for services covered under the terms of your Price Lock Guarantee or Service Agreement will not change for the duration of your agreement. Your covered services are indicated in the Monthly Services section of your bill. We appreciate your business and look forward to continuing to serve you.

Price changes for Cox High Speed Internet are as follows: Starter changes from $37.99 to $39.99. Essential changes from $56.99 to $59.99. Preferred changes from $69.99 to $74.99. Premier changes from $82.99 to $84.99.

I can’t see where I’ve benefited from any improvement.

The bottom line for Cox is that slowly customers are not going for the pay TV services and streaming online. So they are raising prices for internet connection to make up for it.

This is why the term “cord cutting” when it comes to people dropping TV subscriptions is usually a misnomer. You still have a “cord”, but now the charges are just called “internet”.

Gag: It is for real. Trump is also hawking copies of it, though it is out of print.

esquire.com

According to the Huffington Post, Trump Tower is hawking copies of Trump Tower, the “sexiest novel of the decade,” as of this month. The 2012 novel, which hinges on erotica before spiraling into murder mystery, is apparently wildly sexist: Women are hypersexualized and critiqued; nonconsensual sex (ie. sexual assault) is glorified. Trump Tower also contains such winning lines as “precisely what every guy needs … a little pussy,” and this gem:

Although she’d lately added blonde mesh highlights to her dark hair, her big, hazel eyes were the same as when they helped to make her famous, and her high cheekbones were the same, and her legs were the same but, as Belasco had already discovered—being two or three pounds heavier than she’d been as a teenager—she now had absolutely gorgeous breasts.

Just opened my print copy of VFW Magazine, where they contrast the platforms of Republicans and Democrats for veteran affairs and such.

One thing jumps out of the Republican platform: promote faith-based programmes for opioid addiction and PTSD.

Another thing: Privatise everything they can lay their hands on.

A third thing: change veteran appointments to political appointments to VA positions.

Democratic platform: Strengthen the VA system, strengthen the Post 9/11 GI bill, &c.

The VFW gave its Congressional Award last year to Senator Bernie Sanders for his tireless work pushing veterans issues in the Senate. Much of Sanders veterans platform is adopted into the Democratic Platform now.

And yet, a bunch of veterans are going to vote for the GOP all the way down. I don’t get it.

There are levels of motivation deeper than economics and even racism. The career military is going to attract a lot of people with an authoritarian bent. Good thing when you’re trying to seize an objective, bad thing when you’re trying to adapt to a changing

And if your only mode of operation is authoritarianism, you won’t last long in the military anyway.

While when an order is given and expected to be followed, most of the military is not about giving orders, and several leadership styles have to be employed (a coach, a democrat, an authoritarian, a coercer, &c) depending on the situation. If you are stuck on one leadership style you will not be a leader very long; not even in the middle enlisted ranks.

1. If the architects of mega-conspiracies have such godlike power to manipulate international events at a whim, what makes you think they give a shit about your feelings in the first place? Are you special?

2. If some person or group is so powerful that they can do these things, why do they need to? Surely these mega-rich puppetmasters have everything they need or want at their disposal. Are they just bored?

I don’t see why a Rothschild Lizard Alien Jew Banker Elite would take time off from cruising on his yacht on the Croatian coast to bother manipulating U.S. elections. If the system is already created and maintained by this mysterious Cabal, then aren’t conspiracies just maintenance actions? If every officer/NCO were a by-the-book dictator or yes-man, most recruits would bail out before their time was up, and no one would feel free to offer advice.

From my experience in education and else, the same holds true. The kind of authoritarian figure you describe doesn’t stay in his job very long.

Well, an example might be like this:

During the Persian Gulf War, I was stationed in Spain, running the Com/Nav avionics repair shop. When I first took over the shop, it was in miserable shape (giant backlog, only one qualified inspector, morale dismal as it had gone through five supervisors in one year; the division officer actually gave me a choice not to take charge of that shop when I checked in).

Naval Reservists started augmenting our shop in the run-up to the war; every plane on the way to Saudi Arabia stopped in at Rota and every single item in the planes if they didn’t work perfectly came through to be repaired.

Getting that backlog worked off without POing the rest of the shop involved using all of those leadership skills.

The folks in charge were authoritarian: Get your backlog worked off. (Of note, don’t care how you do it as long as it’s legal.)

When I took over the shop, the shop was divided into two twelve-hour shifts, working seven days a week. Not a real morale booster.

I settled into my job of running a shop and brought the whole workcrew together at shift change to brainstorm ideas for reducing our backlog and getting a break of the awful hours (democratic leadership style).

Batted down one reservist (privately) who was whining about how he was an engineer in Connecticut making twenty times his enlisted pay taking orders from a high school educated shop supervisor (me, who outranked him) - I don’t care what you do in Connecticut, you signed the contract, you’re here now, you’ll do the work or you go see the Captain (authoritarian and coersion).

Encouraged as many people as I could to take the Quality Assurance examinations to become avionics collateral duty inspectors, to relieve the workload on our one guy who was on call twenty-four hours a day (coach).

Within a couple months, the shop’s backlog was down to manageable levels, morale was way up, we were on eight-hour five day shifts (two).

This is how schools ideally should work, but rarely don’t. Teachers are often in the unfortunate circumstance of being a supervisor with no support from the administration or department head. So, if there’s a kid giving you trouble, there may be no one in the office willing to back up the teacher’s interpretation of the rules.

Teacher morale is much better when they know the administration trusts them and has their back when dealing with troublesome students, and need I say it? troublesome parents.

As an aside, that’s a beautiful old AM only transistor radio circuit board. 4 AA batteries, the Sony name and a really low serial number implies the TR55 of August 1955. Neat!

I still fondly remember a little Toshiba transistor radio I got as a kid, maybe when I was 6 or 7. Pocket sized (if you had a big pocket) and a truly ugly shade of yellow. Ran off two AAs. It was the 1960s version of the iPod.

They say that a lot of bands like Credence Clearwater Revival, owe part of their popularity for the fact that they sounded good coming out of a transistor radio.

Growing up with my grandmother (who was a schoolteacher at the time), she noted the same sorts of problems. Teachers catch crap from their students, from administrators, and from parents. (Not all of them, but enough to make a teacher’s job tougher than it needs to be.)

“Go easy on Johnny, he’s the mayor’s son.”
“My Freddie can’t get an F on his exam, he’ll get kicked off the football team.” (Coach: You better not give Freddie an F.)

Yup. Takes a strong and sensitive person to be a teacher. I don’t think I could do it. I respected the teachers my son had growing up; I always thought their job was tougher than mine in the Navy.

I loved my old Sears transistor radio, from back when they would tell you how many transistors they had* (for comparison purposes: 7.) Its best feature though, was that it took one of the old 9-volt mercury batteries—absolutely full output until they suddenly died over about 10 minutes. No gradually turning the volume up and distortion increasing as the voltage continually sagged. I’m sure mercury batteries have been banned now.

*Some of them wired up transistors as diodes to run up the count, but I don’t think Sears was guilty of that.

It’s worse here in China, because the unwritten rule at universities is no one fails. If a student fails a final exam, he or she can take it again at the beginning of the next term. I quickly got the message that failing them again was not worth it, as the mark would be changed before being submitted to the university computer system. I’m not a hard grader by any means, but my Chinese students get away with a lot more lackadaisical attitude toward study than I would ever allow in an American classroom.

Another uni made headlines this year by kicking out several students who were skipping classes and failing exams, which universities here apparently rarely do. The students were allowed to return on probation and had to make up the credits they missed.

Private high schools in the USA have a similar problem, as there are few parents willing to accept the idea that their pampered golden child is a total fuck up in school and should be allowed to fail if he/she deserves it. I had a few parent-teacher conferences where I had to carefully explain to the parents, showing them the kid’s grades, why Johnny or Susie got such a low mark. Teaching the parents is more exhausting than teaching the kids, let me tell you.

An anecdote, to demonstrate what I mean. Every year, we’d have open house and invite parents to go through an abbreviated version of their child’s schedule. Two moms were talking in the back of the room before “class” began. After I started the “class” they were still talking, for a good 2-3 minutes! After they introduced themselves, I understood completely why their kids were such Chatty Cathies in class. Apples. Trees.

From Reuters and Yahoo Finance:

Investors take fright at rising chances of Trump U.S. election win

By Jamie McGeever

LONDON (Reuters) - World stocks, the dollar and oil fell on Wednesday, while safe-haven assets such as gold and the Swiss franc rose as investors were rattled by signs the U.S. presidential race was tightening just days before the vote.

Investors were beginning to rethink their long-held bets of a Nov. 8 victory for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton amid signs her Republican rival Donald Trump could be closing the gap, deepening the recent decline across major stock markets.

Asian stocks hit a seven-week low on Wednesday, while European bourses followed Wall Street’s lead overnight and slid to a four-month low.

Bonds rose alongside gold, the Swiss franc and Japanese yen, with the yield on 10-year U.S. Treasuries falling for the third day in a row. British gilts, which have recently been slammed by uncertainty surrounding the post-Brexit UK outlook, surged too.

finance.yahoo.com

I follow the Bitcoin news, too, and Bitcoin prices have also been higher these past two weeks, approaching $800. Analysts say the spike is the result of increased Chinese activity, as Chinese try to move their renminbi off-shore.

“Dear FBI Are You F*cking Kidding Me?”

On Monday, the FBI records vault released heavily redacted files about the “William J. Clinton Foundation,” specifically about the former president and future First Clenis’s pardon of financier Marc Rich, at the end of his second term in office. It’s an old case in which investigators found no wrongdoing, and the newly released files themselves are … ??? … which makes them approximately as vague as the love note James Comey sent to members of Congress about how he has a secret stash of Hillary Clinton ‘n’ Huma Abedin emails in his office that he is (allegedly) whackin’ it to right now.

A suspect in the murder of two metro police officers early Wednesday morning has been identified. The shootings are being called “ambush-style” attacks and police say there is a “clear and present danger to police officers right now.”

Police are seeking 46-year-old Scott Michael Greene of Urbandale. He is a white male, 5’11”, 180 pounds, with brown hair, and green eyes. Police believe he is driving a blue 2011 Ford F-150 with Iowa license plate 780 YFR. The truck has a silver colored topper with a ladder rack.

Greene is considered armed and dangerous. If you see him do not approach, instead call 911.

A bit more about the suspect from heavy.com

A man named Scott Greene, who matches the description of the suspect, recorded himself being kicked out of a football game in Urbandale, Iowa, on October 14, 2016. He titled the video, which you can watch below, “Police Abuse, Civil Rights Violation at Urbandale High School.”

“This is an assault on a person exercising his constitution rights on free speech!,” he wrote in the description.

In the comments section of the video, Greene wrote, “I was offended by the blacks sitting through our anthem. Thousands more whites fought and died for their freedom. However this is not about the Armed forces, they are cop haters.”

There is no way around this: To spout false equivalencies between the two or to support the petulant, symbolic candidacies of third-party ideologues because your sense of purity has been offended is to make her defeat more likely.

The best analogy I’ve heard for this election is that a terrible storm is bearing down upon us. You can either join in raising the alarms and aiding in getting the people to safety, or you can stand by and criticize the fine points of evacuation plans, cast doubt on the strength of the storm and disparage the reputations of the emergency managers.

One other thing I know: Not only will history be unkind to Donald Trump, win or lose, it will also be unkind to those who enabled him.

The U.S. Senate and two of its key Republican leaders, relying on an array of constitutional claims, has told a federal judge that the courts must stay out of the political feud over the current vacancy on the Supreme Court. In a brief filed Monday in a federal District Court in Washington, D.C., the legislative body said the Senate has no duty to take any action on President Obama’s nomination of Circuit Judge Merrick B. Garland be approved as a Justice.

“All methods of withholding the consent necessary to confirm a nominee are legislative acts, whether characterized as ‘a refusal to act’ or whether performed by ‘the Senate’ (as opposed to its individual members),” the brief contended. And, as legislative action, the decision to simply sit on a nomination is insulated from challenge under the Constitution’s Speech or Debate Clause, the filing argued.

The two “leaders” are McConnell and Grassley.

I suspect there’s more ‘bark’ than ‘bite’ in these stories. These goons are petrified of urban areas.

They think they only need to broadcast their intent to have an effect. We’ll see if the children of the Selma marchers aren’t as brave as their parents.

Yeah, I think if they tried that, it would be a short day for them.

The would be poll-watchers also have to vote for themselves someplace. They also have to get out of bed and put on their pants, which might be challenging enough.

This is why the Hatch Act was passed. It seems the FBI feels the law is merely a recommendation.

Every year that there is an election of any kind (in my area), I get emails discussing the Hatch Act and how is will negatively impact my career should I decide to violated it. The Hatch Act shows up in our mandatory ethics training. It is a ubiquitous presence. This FBI shit is really annoying and violative. The FBI IG and Ombudsman need to get their shit together and get the twit account holder (which I am guessing is under the Office of Public Affairs in the FBI) under control.

But you can be damn sure when the game is over they will then switch to bitching about those results. Should Trump win I can see them doing special like “How did America get fooled into voting for Trump.” SHould Clinton win they will do shows like “Should America Deserve More than Hillary Clinton and Why are Politics Not Giving Us Our Freshest Best?”

That’s why he’s including it. It is just above his threshold, though it might not make the cut next year once he reviews this year’s data.

If you’re concerned about how 538 handles polls and its volatility, consider using PEC as your go to. Far less volatile on a day to day basis. Considering that the dynamics of the election have been fairly stable despite the polling noise, this makes sense.

Police are looking for a cop killer who was previously removed him from a football stadium after he flew the confederate rag during the national anthem because “I was offended by the blacks sitting through our anthem. Thousands more whites fought and died for their freedom”.

This….of course…..only could make sense to a Trump deplorable.

What we know about Iowa police shooting suspect Scott Michael Greene

Apparently he’s a kind of alt-right activist, since he offered the video to a local TV station and has engaged in this kind of instigation before:

The user posted another video, called “Civil Rights Violation at Urbandale High School 10/14/16,” which shows a man resembling Greene apparently holding a Confederate Flag at a sports game.

There was also this:

The YouTube account also features a video posted just two days ago, showing high school cheerleaders dancing at a gymnasium event.

Hypothesis: He’s a perv and the alt-right/confederate rag stuff was a cover for him to be lurking around high school events with his perv-cam.

The one thing I don’t get about this is that all of the Networks and major media players have reporters following the campaign and attending Trump’s rallies. All of these reporters get verbally abused and threatened by Trump’s crowds at rallies. True. Since Area 51 and our less well known facility under the Denver airport are Department of Defense installations, it is the Secretary of Defense, through the classified Office of ET relations, who is in charge of all relations with our ET guests, including bailing them out when they run afoul of the law.

Officials: Greenville church burning, vandalism being investigated as hate crime

GREENVILLE, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Authorities are now investigating the burning and vandalism of a historic church in Greenville as a hate crime.

Tuesday night, after 11 p.m., authorities responded to the scene of the 111-year-old Hopewell M.B. Church. The church was not only burned, but also vandalized with the words “Vote Trump” spray painted on the side of the building.

Officials said during a press conference held on Wednesday that the incident is now being investigated as a hate crime and Greenville Police Chief Freddie Cannon called the incident a “a form of voting intimidation”.

We’re told that there is heavy fire, water and smoke damage in the sanctuary of the church. The pastor’s study and the kitchen also were damaged.

Officials say they are speaking with a person of interest but have not identified a suspect.

The FBI released a statement on the burning:

“The FBI Jackson Division is aware of the situation in Greenville, and we are working with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners to determine if any civil rights crimes were committed.”

I have a bit of a crush on Katy.

Plus, she puts up with an awful lot of crap from Donald and his Deplorables.

Katy trivia (not really trivia, it was in an article she wrote) —

In June 2015, she was the lowest-ranked staffer at the London bureau. She did human interest stories, puff pieces, arts reviews, and had a very pleasant life with her British live-in boyfriend. She thought it was heading towards marriage.

She was assigned a quick trip to NYC for a short piece on the announcement of candidate 17, because there was just nobody else available. The politics reporters had gotten to choose, in order of seniority, which campaign they wanted to be assigned to. The campaign went on… and on… she got tons of airtime, she got a few good scoops… When other campaigns flamed out and other reporters came available and wanted her beat, her boyfriend urged her to take the out. It was an ultimatum — back to London and to him, or he’d break up with her. She waved bye-bye to the asshole who’d only be with her on condition she crippled her career for him.

Bottom line… she’s single now, absolutely available, if you’re a man who’d who’d be totally supportive of her ambition and would never in any way try to block her. Bonus points if you’re a good cook, and would consider being a full-time Mr Mom when the kids come.

Q: So the onus is on progressives? Is there a responsibility for conservatives to reach out too?

I used to read her (and/or her spouse, maybe) when I was a kid and the magazine Mother Jones had just come out. Wiki’s summation of her sociology:

She needs to get out more, or did until recently.

Yeah I read a book review of her new book in the NYT.

That can be such a time-saving activity.

Ah, yes, her.

Note, the picture accompanying this article has a white dude with a Hillary For Prison tee-shirt.

But, yes, let’s have empathy for this hateful as*hole.

Empathy is appropriate. If I knew how to cure them I would.

Hug your loved ones, folks. Breathe. If you’re feeling anxious about the election, take a break from the news cycle for awhile.

re: #559 wrenchwench

Q: What were your preconceived stereotypes or expectations before you first visited Louisiana for this book in 2011?

Hochschild: What I expected was a self-centered people, but I found people who were nothing like that, quite the opposite. They were openhearted, they were communal. They were very eager to be known. They’d say, ‘Thanks for coming. We’re the flyover state, people don’t care about us, they don’t know who we are. They think we’re racist and homophobic and sexist and fat.’ There was a gratitude toward me, and I would tell them exactly who I was: ‘I think I live in a political bubble, and I’m trying to get out of mine and into yours. Will you talk to me? In some of them you sensed loss and a sense of being invisible and unappreciated and insulted. That liberals just think they’re rednecks. Here were people, some who had worked very hard, half were college-educated, and they just felt put down, and they felt a drifting downward in their economic circumstance, but didn’t hear anyone listening to them about their distress. They felt like a minority group.

One is tempted to suggest they stop thinking of themselves as victims, and accept that this feeling of being unknown and unappreciated is common to most people in the world who just soldier on through it.

Trump’s neo-Nazi supporters aside, there are certainly economically disenfranchised blue-collar white working class voters who’ve been hit hard in recent decades, and in their desperation, they’ve embraced Trump.

No one ever told them that their world is gone, and it’s not coming back. The post-WWII environment for US blue collar workers was a unique experience, a historic anomaly. There is simply no way whatsoever that any future blue-collar workers will ever have it so good ever again; our economic competitors had been quite literally bombed into oblivion. It makes no difference who is POTUS. The problem lies in telling these folks - with brutal honesty - that the rules they grew up with no longer apply.

Yeah, I think they don’t need the empathy expressed about them and all over them, they need a big injection of it.

Meanwhile, voters in the “heartland” have been mocking us coastal dwellers for decades and I guess that’s OK, calling us “unAmericans” and worse.

At Hillary Campaign again today.

Hope Monmouth and Marquette have some good polling news.

Very good to see you’re at the campaign.

Spend your spare time looking historical elections, Dr Who sites, religious instruction, whatever will keep you from sneaking back to take ‘just one more’ hit of the poll-crack. Get into a discussion with someone who needs to be convinced that Clara was a good companion. Not going to tell you not to be anxious, but perhaps shift the laser-focus in a different direction for awhile, for your health’s sake.

Keerist on a wheat thin—these people hurt my brain. It reminds me of the NYT opinion piece by some academic in New Jersey who said we should all shed tears for the poor, mistreated young white males who have had to deal with the tragedy of losing their lock on white privilege.

Like Alexandra Pelosi’s “Right American Feeling Wronged” it never ends with these assholes.

Fuck them. And fuck privileged trust-fund baby, Meghan McCain, and don’t even get me started on Susan Sarandon.

I’m in a mood—can you tell?

I can’t find that soft spot in my heart for Charlie Manson either, must be a shortcoming of mine.

Billy Joel wrote “Allentown” in the late 70s and released it in 1982. That’s 35+ years of the message being out there. It’s not that I lack empathy, but there are many, many disenfranchised groups who do not seem to engender this outpouring of concern, when the facts have been in evidence for so long.

Or, following Piketty at least, not without the tax rates of the Eisenhower era.
