I’m guessing big crossover from Cuban voters and Republican women. If that’s true, the Cuban effect would be limited to Florida, but significant crossover from Republican women would likely have a similar, if smaller, impact in other states. Will be interested to see the unaffiliated voter crosstabs when they come out.

RUSSIAN THEATRE CANCELS JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR AFTER ‘BLASPHEMY’ ACCUSATIONS
A Siberian theatre triggered a storm today by cancelling a staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Jesus Christ Superstar after a pro-Kremlin nationalist group condemned it as blasphemy.
The touring production by Saint Petersburg’s Rock Opera theatre was due to open November 1 in the Musical Theatre of the city of Omsk, but the organisers cancelled it this week following protests by conservative activists.
In a report from Omsk, Regnum news agency wrote today that the scandal “has prompted a major public reaction”.
It quoted art critic Vadim Klimov as saying: “Today you cannot say that Russia is a secular state.”
An obscure group called Family, Love, Fatherland had appealed to regional authorities to stop the staging and applied to hold a demonstration, accusing the long-running musical of “non-stop blasphemy” and “mockery of faith”.

I always thought Weld by far the more sensible of him and Johnson. In fact, I was surprised Weld became Johnson’s running mate. I think he wanted to give street cred to the LP by having two governors on the ticket and if Johnson had a different running mate, he would have gone with one of the more kooky elements of the LP. The inner dynamics of the LP are actually pretty interesting to me.

Ok, showed up on the campus around 4:45… the doors opened at 4:30. I live pretty close to the campus so things were a bit chaotic, but honestly, it was a really long line of angry white people.
There were barricades set up separating the angry white folks from pretty much everyone else. Priebus talked, I’m pretty sure Walker talked next, then thee Donald came on. I have video. I’ll go through it tomorrow, but it’s pretty much exactly how’d you expect a Trump rally to go down. A bunch of confusion, a lot of older white people, and a pretty big sound system.

October was merger-mania month with a pre-election surge during the waning days: five of the largest 11 US-focused Mergers & Acquisitions in 2016 were announced in the last 10 days of October, including two that broke all-time industry records.
The mania was topped off by two big announcements on Monday:
GE’s $25-billion acquisition of Baker Hughes. Since 2008, the M&A-meister, financial engineering specialist, and industrial powerhouse has gobbled up 51 companies of $1 billion or more in value.
CenturyLink’s $24-billion acquisition of Level 3 Communications.
In the prior days, three big deals made investment bankers salivate:AT&T’s $85.7-billion deal to acquire Time Warner, announced on October 22, the hugest deal in the history of media, even huger than the prior hugest media deal ever, the AOL Time Warner deal that ended as a spectacular success along with the rest of the mania at the time. But Wall Street instantly refuted what everyone had been thinking from the very first moment, that this was most decidedly and in fact, doubtlessly, not the next AOL Time Warner.
Qualcomm’s $39.2-billion acquisition of NXP Semiconductors, announced October 27, the biggest deal in the history of the semiconductor industry.
British American Tobacco’s $46.9-billion acquisition of Reynolds American - the 57.8% it didn’t already own - announced on October 21.
This pushed US deal volume in October to $330.3 billion, the second highest month on record, after July’s $332.3 billion! And this comes after the all-time record year 2015.

And then there’s the lag time between the record-breaking mega merger data that blows a hole into the ship, and the sinking of the ship. The lag could be a year or longer.For example, last time: Private equity firms KKR, TPG Capital, and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners announced in February 2007 that they would acquire the Texas utility TXU; the deal became final in October 2007. It was the biggest, most leveraged, craziest buyout ever, and it would ultimately collapse into bankruptcy. With hindsight, it was the final deal-making paroxysm. The stock market turned south the moment the deal became final, at first in a very casual manner. It took another 11 months before Lehman imploded and all heck broke lose.

One thing jumps out of the Republican platform: promote faith-based programmes for opioid addiction and PTSD.
Another thing: Privatise everything they can lay their hands on.
A third thing: change veteran appointments to political appointments to VA positions.
Democratic platform: Strengthen the VA system, strengthen the Post 9/11 GI bill, &c.

Well, an example might be like this:
During the Persian Gulf War, I was stationed in Spain, running the Com/Nav avionics repair shop. When I first took over the shop, it was in miserable shape (giant backlog, only one qualified inspector, morale dismal as it had gone through five supervisors in one year; the division officer actually gave me a choice not to take charge of that shop when I checked in).
Naval Reservists started augmenting our shop in the run-up to the war; every plane on the way to Saudi Arabia stopped in at Rota and every single item in the planes if they didn’t work perfectly came through to be repaired.
Getting that backlog worked off without POing the rest of the shop involved using all of those leadership skills.
The folks in charge were authoritarian: Get your backlog worked off. (Of note, don’t care how you do it as long as it’s legal.)
When I took over the shop, the shop was divided into two twelve-hour shifts, working seven days a week. Not a real morale booster.
I settled into my job of running a shop and brought the whole workcrew together at shift change to brainstorm ideas for reducing our backlog and getting a break of the awful hours (democratic leadership style).
Batted down one reservist (privately) who was whining about how he was an engineer in Connecticut making twenty times his enlisted pay taking orders from a high school educated shop supervisor (me, who outranked him) - I don’t care what you do in Connecticut, you signed the contract, you’re here now, you’ll do the work or you go see the Captain (authoritarian and coersion).
Encouraged as many people as I could to take the Quality Assurance examinations to become avionics collateral duty inspectors, to relieve the workload on our one guy who was on call twenty-four hours a day (coach).
Within a couple months, the shop’s backlog was down to manageable levels, morale was way up, we were on eight-hour five day shifts (two).
A military supervisor is really not that much different than a civilian one, though you do have a) the benefit of rules and regulations you can enforce and b) you do not have the “FU” I quit option.

This is how schools ideally should work, but rarely don’t. Teachers are often in the unfortunate circumstance of being a supervisor with no support from the administration or department head. So, if there’s a kid giving you trouble, there may be no one in the office willing to back up the teacher’s interpretation of the rules.
Teacher morale is much better when they know the administration trusts them and has their back when dealing with troublesome students, and need I say it? troublesome parents.

I loved my old Sears transistor radio, from back when they would tell you how many transistors they had* (for comparison purposes: 7.) Its best feature though, was that it took one of the old 9-volt mercury batteries—absolutely full output until they suddenly died over about 10 minutes. No gradually turning the volume up and distortion increasing as the voltage continually sagged. I’m sure mercury batteries have been banned now.
*Some of them wired up transistors as diodes to run up the count, but I don’t think Sears was guilty of that.

It’s worse here in China, because the unwritten rule at universities is no one fails. If a student fails a final exam, he or she can take it again at the beginning of the next term. I quickly got the message that failing them again was not worth it, as the mark would be changed before being submitted to the university computer system. I’m not a hard grader by any means, but my Chinese students get away with a lot more lackadaisical attitude toward study than I would ever allow in an American classroom.
Another uni made headlines this year by kicking out several students who were skipping classes and failing exams, which universities here apparently rarely do. The students were allowed to return on probation and had to make up the credits they missed.
Private high schools in the USA have a similar problem, as there are few parents willing to accept the idea that their pampered golden child is a total fuck up in school and should be allowed to fail if he/she deserves it. I had a few parent-teacher conferences where I had to carefully explain to the parents, showing them the kid’s grades, why Johnny or Susie got such a low mark. Teaching the parents is more exhausting than teaching the kids, let me tell you.
An anecdote, to demonstrate what I mean. Every year, we’d have open house and invite parents to go through an abbreviated version of their child’s schedule. Two moms were talking in the back of the room before “class” began. After I started the “class” they were still talking, for a good 2-3 minutes! After they introduced themselves, I understood completely why their kids were such Chatty Cathies in class. Apples. Trees.

A suspect in the murder of two metro police officers early Wednesday morning has been identified. The shootings are being called “ambush-style” attacks and police say there is a “clear and present danger to police officers right now.”
Police are seeking 46-year-old Scott Michael Greene of Urbandale. He is a white male, 5’11”, 180 pounds, with brown hair, and green eyes. Police believe he is driving a blue 2011 Ford F-150 with Iowa license plate 780 YFR. The truck has a silver colored topper with a ladder rack.
Greene is considered armed and dangerous. If you see him do not approach, instead call 911.

A man named Scott Greene, who matches the description of the suspect, recorded himself being kicked out of a football game in Urbandale, Iowa, on October 14, 2016. He titled the video, which you can watch below, “Police Abuse, Civil Rights Violation at Urbandale High School.”
“This is an assault on a person exercising his constitution rights on free speech!,” he wrote in the description.
In the comments section of the video, Greene wrote, “I was offended by the blacks sitting through our anthem. Thousands more whites fought and died for their freedom. However this is not about the Armed forces, they are cop haters.”

That’s why he’s including it. It is just above his threshold, though it might not make the cut next year once he reviews this year’s data.
If you’re concerned about how 538 handles polls and its volatility, consider using PEC as your go to. Far less volatile on a day to day basis. Considering that the dynamics of the election have been fairly stable despite the polling noise, this makes sense.

The one thing I don’t get about this is that all of the Networks and major media players have reporters following the campaign and attending Trump’s rallies. All of these reporters get verbally abused and threatened by Trump’s crowds at rallies. Members of the press get harassed by his army of deplorables on Twitter and yet the actual coverage of the campaigns continues as it it were a normal campaign. The press continues to cover Hillary’s emails as if they were somehow important. Officials: Greenville church burning, vandalism being investigated as hate crime
GREENVILLE, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Authorities are now investigating the burning and vandalism of a historic church in Greenville as a hate crime.
Tuesday night, after 11 p.m., authorities responded to the scene of the 111-year-old Hopewell M.B. Church. The church was not only burned, but also vandalized with the words “Vote Trump” spray painted on the side of the building.
Officials said during a press conference held on Wednesday that the incident is now being investigated as a hate crime and Greenville Police Chief Freddie Cannon called the incident a “a form of voting intimidation”.
We’re told that there is heavy fire, water and smoke damage in the sanctuary of the church. The pastor’s study and the kitchen also were damaged.
Officials say they are speaking with a person of interest but have not identified a suspect.
The FBI released a statement on the burning:
“The FBI Jackson Division is aware of the situation in Greenville, and we are working with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners to determine if any civil rights crimes were committed.”

It was an ultimatum — back to London and to him, or he’d break up with her. She waved bye-bye to the asshole who’d only be with her on condition she crippled her career for him.

No one ever told them that their world is gone, and it’s not coming back. The post-WWII environment for US blue collar workers was a unique experience, a historic anomaly. There is simply no way whatsoever that any future blue-collar workers will ever have it so good ever again; our economic competitors had been quite literally bombed into oblivion. It makes no difference who is POTUS. The problem lies in telling these folks - with brutal honesty - that the rules they grew up with no longer apply.
