You know who deserves empathy?

All the people who are continually derided and accused of being “fake Americans” or ” not really American”, usually by the same folks we continually coddle by assuring them they’re the ‘Real Americans’ to the exclusion of the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, voters in the “heartland” have been mocking us coastal dwellers for decades and I guess that’s OK, calling us “unAmericans” and worse.

Voters on the coasts have been mocking us in the heartland, calling us “flyover country,” “uneducated,” “hicks,” “rednecks,” &c for decades. I guess that’s OK, calling us “un-Americans” and worse.

Today in spinning:

Daniel C. Richman, an adviser to Mr. Comey and a Columbia University law professor, argued that despite the backlash, Mr. Comey’s decision to inform Congress preserved the F.B.I.’s independence, which will ultimately benefit the next president.

“Those arguing that the director should have remained silent until the new emails could be reviewed — even if that process lasted, or was delayed, until after the election — give too little thought to the governing that needs to happen after November,” Mr. Richman said. “If the F.B.I. director doesn’t have the credibility to keep Congress from interfering in the bureau’s work and to assure Congress that a matter has been or is being looked into, the new administration will pay a high price.”

a) We can’t preserve our independence unless we cave to pressure from Congress or other actors.
b) The FBI can’t have credibility with a GOP Congress or President unless we assure them we will help them. /smh

John Oliver rips Anthony Weiner for putting the US at risk of President Trump

“So, to recap: The grinding hell of this election has thrown in yet another twist—with the election hanging in the balance—all thanks to the fact that Anthony Weiner allegedly sexted with a 15-year-old girl,” exclaimed Oliver. “We have burrowed through not just rock bottom, but through the core of the earth. And we’ve come bursting out the other side, startling kangaroos, and we’re currently hurtling toward outer space where there is no up, down, light, or darkness—just an endless void in which death comes as sweet, sweet relief. Please let this thing be over soon!”

Ryan Bundy opines he might have to “take action” if President Obama declares a national monument of Gold Butte, a tract of land that abuts Cliven Bundy’s ranch.

Ryan Bundy is angry that Obama, before he leaves office, may use his executive power under the 1906 Antiquities Act to impose new restrictions on Gold Butte, a 350,000-acre parcel of pristine desert wilderness just south of the Bundy family’s ranch.

Obama administration officials said federal officials were rattled by the Oregon verdict, but individuals briefed on the process say the White House is pushing ahead with plans to create a monument that would permanently preserve a federally owned tract filled with soaring peaks, exotic red sandstone formations, an imperiled desert tortoise population and thousands of ancient Native American rock etchings called petroglyphs.

Quelle surprise—it wasn’t the Iowa murderer’s first rodeo.

Of a previous incident:
Greene was “noncompliant, hostile, combative and made furtive movements toward his pockets” before the arrest, Officer Chris Greenfield wrote in the complaint. Greene pleaded guilty to the charge about two weeks later.
Charles P. Pierce notes:

“Furtive movements”? Good thing Greene didn’t live in a state—for example, the State of Being Black

and then:
But two days later he reportedly threatened to kill a man in the parking lot of the same apartment complex and he was charged with first-degree harassment, according to another complaint. n that incident, Greene was accused of approaching a man in the parking lot and shined a flashlight in his eyes. Greene, who lived in the apartments, called the man the N-word and told the man “I will kill you, (expletive) kill you,” according to the complaint. Greene pleaded guilty to a lesser harassment charge on June 30, 2014, and was sentenced to one year of probation.
