Wednesday Night Jam: Drive-by Truckers Live at NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts

In music, we can escape the cruelties of the world or face them. There’s no wrong way about it, but recently the members of Drive-By Truckers, a band that’s long toed the line between a good time and a hard look at life, found they could no longer work purely in metaphor. American Band holds a direct mirror to a set of realities in this country with the same grace and rough-hewn wisdom that’s guided the band all along. But in this compulsion to speak to the right now, there is an anger behind these songs never heard before.

In an emotional performance at the NPR offices, Patterson Hood’s gravelly voice — capable of the quietest coos and the loudest hellraising — finds a new space, one that’s shaken and vulnerable. He sings both “Guns Of Umpqua” and “What It Means,” songs not just about gun violence, but about the persons it affects: The former is about the horrific shooting at Umpqua Community College in rural Oregon last year, and the latter about the killing of young black men like Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin. Before performing “What It Means,” Hood tells the audience, “I wrote this song a couple years ago. I’d honestly be really happy if it was just outdated and something we could leave in the past, but that’s certainly not the case right now.”

Mike Cooley closes the set with “Once They Banned Imagine,” a quiet country song “about things staying the same, and not necessarily in a good way,” he says. That theme runs throughout Drive-By Truckers’ catalog almost by necessity — by virtue of their being a rock band from the South, but also a rock band from America.

American Band is available now:

Reposted from downstairs because I’m tired of hitting the ends of dying threads:

When my mom was 9, my granddad moved the family to Chicago for a job during the pit of the Great Depression. They stayed three years and right from the start she was a Cubs fan. Watching this game with her is driving me nuts. Everything is a disaster waiting to happen. Of course, a Cubs fan for 84 years is entitled to this point of view. But please, can we just end thing at 8-6?

To be fair, he was talking strictly percentages but I honestly think Nate overdoes it especially with sports. The Cubs did have big odds against coming back but it wasn’t as improbable as Nate made it to to be since 3-1 comebacks have happened and this is a team that won 100+ games this year.

Anyway, Daily Kos had a decent article about the turnout poll from Lawrence yesterday.

Two parts:

An explanation of TargetSmart:

In 2014, Politico reported that: TargetSmart is one of the pillars of the Democratic data infrastructure, providing voter-file and targeting data to clients, including the Obama campaign in 2008 and 2012, all 50 state Democratic parties and a huge array of candidates.

And the punchline:

And so what methodology did TargetSmart use in their recent Florida poll that had everyone’s eyes bugging out?

The TargetSmart/William & Mary Poll was conducted using a blended web/phone data collection approach. As weighted, 530 online interviews were conducted from October 25-28, 2016 among panelists from six leading online opt-in panel providers who were matched to the TargetSmart voter file. As weighted, 188 telephone interviews were conducted from October 27-30, 2016 to supplement the online sample, with telephone numbers for targeted populations being selected at random from the TargetSmart voter file.

Very true. They’ll be back next year. It helps that Francona has won one before but it still hurts to lose. He handled it with class and gave a lot of respect to the Cubs especially when talking about how they handled the blown lead.

182
Anymouse  Nov 2, 2016 • 10:25:16pm

Speaking to ITV, Clarke said: “We’ll be wearing poppies at Wembley. I mean, we’d rather come to an agreement with FIFA so that they’re happy with that, but you know, it’s inconceivable that the FA won’t be sanctioning the wearing of poppies at Wembley.”

He added: “We’re balancing respect for the fallen and their families. We’re negotiating in good faith with FIFA to try and find a solution.”

The Scottish FA released a statement a few hours later which confirmed that although it took the laws of the game “very seriously”, Scotland would also be sporting the poppy on armbands.

“The poppy is an important symbol of remembrance and we do not believe it represents a political, religious or commercial message, nor does it relate to any one historical event,” read the statement from Hampden Park.

“In keeping with what we believe is in accordance with Law 4, para 4, the Scottish FA intends to pay appropriate tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice by having the Scotland national team wear black armbands bearing poppies in our fixture against England on Armistice Day.”

FIFA said that although it respected the “significance” of the day in the United Kingdom, it would maintain the ban for the forthcoming clash.

Okay, I’ll just keep burying you with Cubs articles. (::

voanews.com (Voice of America)

The Chicago Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years, beating the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in 10 innings.

The Cubs led 6-3 after the first six innings but Cleveland scored three runs in the bottom of the eight to tie it up. Neither team scored in the ninth, and after a brief rain delay the game went into extra innings.

Both teams hoped to end long droughts without a world title: the Cubs last won in 1908 while the Indians’ last series win was in 1948.

Despite the Cubs being favored to win the series, Cleveland was a game away from claiming the title after winning the first, third and fourth games of the series. But Chicago won three straight - including the final two in Cleveland - to end the longest stretch without a World Series win by any team in baseball.

CLEVELAND — The wait ‘til next year is finally over. The Chicago Cubs are World Series champions.

Ending more than a century of flops, futility and frustration, the Cubs won their first title since 1908, outlasting the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in 10 innings of a Game 7 thriller early Thursday.

“It happened. It happened. Chicago, it happened,” first baseman Anthony Rizzo said. “We did it. We’re world champions. I tell ya, we’re world champions. I can’t believe it.”

Lovable losers for generations, the Cubs nearly let this one get away, too. All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman blew a three-run lead with two outs in the eighth when Rajai Davis hit a tying homer. (more at the link)

One of the boat tours in my town has their office/dock right across the street from a 5 story hotel. The tours leave around 7:30 - 8:00. Passengers wait on outside benches facing the hotel before loading the boats. It’s amazing how many hotel guests get up at that time in the morning and open the curtains while being buck naked. Both male and female and sometimes both.

I was heartbroken, but remained optimistic, like a true Cubs fan. And time and time again they demonstrated their ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

When one remembers that the word “Nazi” was an abbreviation for “der Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiters Partei — in English translation: the National Socialist German Workers’ Party — Mises’s identification might not appear all that noteworthy. For what should one expect the economic system of a country ruled by a party with “socialist” in its name to be but socialism?

The issue is not that simple. It could be argued that the NS economy was sort of socialist if it were shown that the private ownership of the means of production there was but a legal fiction. In fact, a couple of authors do just that.
But here is a good article showing that it was quite real, not a mere empty shell, even if not without quirks:

State ownership of means of production and property is not exclusive to socialism, in some dictatorships where the beloved leader (sic(!)) is ever hungrier for power and wealth and discretely gains ownership of things through various machinations.
In socialist states, the moving of property and means of production to the state is most of the time done in the open.
How was it the saying went? Der Führer ist Deutschland, Deutschland is ist der Führer?

Nyet  Nov 3, 2016 • 2:34:30am

re: #258 Teukka

Sure, but neither was Deutschland seen as Hitler’s property, it was always for das deutsche Volk. As such, this sort of control could be seen as the social ownership dictated by socialism. And before you object to it being a fiction, don’t forget that it wouldn’t be different from the Soviet Union, where slogans and reality didn’t necessarily match. We still usually characterize the Soviet system as socialist (even if some Trotskyists label it state capitalist) despite “the workers and peasants” not being the actual owners of the “workers’ and peasants’ state”.

The point is, the issue is not straightforward. The relationship between the state and the private business should be examined to make any sort of a conclusion. That a careful analysis will most probably show that the Nazi Germany wasn’t socialist (see the above article) doesn’t mean it that it’s a foregone conclusion. The leftist trappings and rhetoric are only secondary characteristics.

Dear God, make this end:

State and local Democratic Party officials say they’re taking legal action against mayoral front-runner Joe Morrissey’s campaign over sample ballots he mailed to 35,000 residents that say he’s the party’s pick for mayor.

“The Morrissey campaign is engaged in a flagrant and intentionally misleading violation of campaign regulations,” Rebecca Slutzky, executive director of the Democratic Party of Virginia, said in a statement.

“Morrissey does not have the endorsement of the Democratic Party of Virginia or the Richmond City Democratic Committee, and we are requesting that he cease these activities immediately.”

Residents began receiving a mailing from Morrissey’s campaign Wednesday that included a mass-produced handwritten note from the candidate and a blue piece of paper labeled “Democratic Party sample ballot.”

The sample ballot lists Morrissey alongside presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and 4th District congressional hopeful Donald McEachin as the party’s choice.

Morrissey’s campaign manager acknowledged the issue Wednesday, calling it a printing error.

It is a pattern of history that democratic regimes that attempt to assume power in a country that is shattered from violent revolution (and often still threatened from outside or involved in hostilities) are often too weak to govern and fall to some sort of authoritarian takeover.

regardless of how it looked way back when clinton was polling like 80%(?) or like it might have been a month or so ago, or taking the house, not taking the house, flipping the senate or not, october surprise, fbi, whatever.

the primary goal is to win the presidency. The electoral prediction / projection that hillary clinton will be the next president has not changed since day one.

Hate that they think a horse race is necessary to generate ratings.

There’s money to be made in landslides too. How much of a landslide. How big a win. How big a swing to the Democrats in Congress and local races. Coattails.

Etc.

The media outlets think a horserace guarantees big ratings? Any race would. We’re dealing with a historically awful candidate (all time worst) versus one of the most qualified candidates to ever run - Hillary Clinton. Oh, and she’s a woman and has been subjected to more criticism and investigations than anyone else (in history?) running for the White House and coming out the other side right as rain.

Despite every attempt to attack her credibility and her very essence, the reality is that she’s a better candidate than her opponent in every way - except that the misogynists think that because she’s a woman, she has no business being president. And that view clouds everything else. She’s subject to more scrutiny, from the clothing choices to her fitness and health.

Oh yes, she was campaigning while having pneumonia. I wonder how many of these guys would be doing that instead of crawling into bed. But the right wing nut jobs think she’s on death’s door. Well, she’s mighty spry for someone in that position. And she’s still beating her opponent nationally and on her opponent’s home turf.

In case no one noticed, Clinton and her opponent are both domiciled in NY and she’s leading NY by a comfortable margin. Her opponent said that he’d win NY. Fat chance. In fact, he’s getting crushed in the NYC metro area (NY, NJ, CT). So, he can’t win in his own backyard, and if he can’t do that, he has no business being President (by his own logic from the primaries, where he claimed beating others in their home states showed he should be nominee).

The negotiations are likely to focus on the trade-off between Britain’s desire both to control E.U. immigration into the country and to retain access to the E.U.’s common market. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, a leading Brexit proponent, has said the government’s objective in the talks “should be having our cake and eating it.”

Ditto for me too. And hardly any bumper stickers as well. 4 years ago there was a very large mix of Mittens and Obama bumper stickers. I hardly see any from either side.

I am seeing a bunch of signs for downticket candidates, though, including one guy who lives in my neighborhood running for Congress who has signs everywhere. I did not vote for him, though, because he is GOP.

re: #312 Donkey With No Name

British constitutional law always confuses me … but from what I know, this is exactly right (Parliament would need to approve Brexit). If you’re one of the Brexiteers who shouts about the vital importance of absolute parliamentary sovereignty, you can’t claim that the PM can unilaterally decide the terms of a popular referendum which overrides the will of Parliament.

As I understood it, the referendum was not binding on anyone, the PM or Parliament. It was Cameron the ninny who said he would abide by the people’s vote, and then when push came to shove, he bailed out of both his office and the House of Commons. So, the court made the only logical ruling, that the law (and the EU constitution) require the legislative body make the decision.

There are real investigations happening right now. Some of them people will cheer (Trump, Russians) and some of them will have people crying foul (Clinton Foundation). But FBI investigations shouldn’t be partisan events. They should be investigations and just that - if they turn up nothing so be it. If they end in indictment so be it.

In the context of the election, asking Hillary to comment is as harmful to her candidacy as her responding to the question with “There is no case there”(actual quote)…that’s not a great answer and only fuels the word parsers. Pointing at Trump and saying, “Well, he was speeding too!” (fake quote) is also not a great argument.

Well, congratulations Cubs! I’m as happy for them as I was for Boston in 2004.
Plus, I’ve had it in for the Indians ever since that AL Championship Series against the Mariners in 1996.

You mean the one when the Indians were outspent by the Marlin’s owner who then turned around and sold the players off the next couple years.

That’s one of the reason the Cleveland Indians should be given more credit.

They do more with less bucks than just about anyone. And, they do it right…they develop young players and bring them up to the bigs through the Columbus Clippers and put a decent team out on the field.

Then the players go off in free agency or get traded because the team knows they will lose them and the players make the big bucks.

I heard earlier 17 or so of this year’s roster were Columbus Clippers in the last few years.

Actually, the leaks suggest that the Justice Department shut down the Clinton Foundation investigation because there was in fact no case. There just happens to be a group of FBI agents who after reading “Clinton Cash” and right wing news sources, disagreed and wanted to pursue the investigation further. Denied that, they have decided to leak, 1 week before the presidential election. Based on that, Hillary’s assertion that there is “No Case” is correct. That was the opinion of the Justice Department. What does seem to be the case is that a not insignificant number of people’s crazy right wing uncles work for the FBI.

The “sources” could just as well be the voices in their head. It’s not like there can really be an official denial, so all we are left with is rampant rumor and speculation that just so happens to coincide with the wishes of the people making the claims. Weird.

Again to be fair, he really gave the odds. Honestly, as something of a sports historian, I do think Nate underrated the Cubs chances. 3-1 comebacks aren’t unheard of in sports and in fact the Cavs did it just year. Plus this was a Cubs team that won over 100 games. But it was quite unusual given that Cleveland won 2/3 on the road but only 1/4 at home. Anyhow, the election is a different animal than the WS. That said, I am hoping the Redskins rule and NL Game Seven rule applies this year as well as the Scholastic mock election.

We should know early on where things are heading. In particular, how soon PA and NH are called for HRC, if she in fact wins them, as she is expected to. If both those states are called pretty early I think she—and we—will be in good shape.

I was groggy when I awoke this morning…but did I hear Joke Scarborough say New Hampshire was now close/tied or something?

That would be right before I changed the channel because I’m trying to stay away from Joke. I had the TV on watching the repeat of Lawrence O’Donnell early this morning and Joke was on when I turned on the TV for the local news.

Lawrence O’Donnell had some interesting points last night.

He was saying in many states the polling is showing there might be a surprise from the NeverTrump Republicans that might not show up directly in the presidential polls because they are being stealthy.

What he was saying is if you look at down ticket Republicans they are carrying a higher percentage in their states than Trump is. He thinks that may be an indication those missing percentage numbers indicate Republicans going for down ticket Republicans and either voting for Hillary or not voting for Trump which will help Hillary.

I guess he felt the percentages should be more similar for Trump and say for the Senate Republicans.

He claimed the NeverTrump people never said they would give up and if they couldn’t change the candidate they would change it in the voting booth.

(Don’t know if I explained it properly…I’m not a statistician)

What bothers me about what Nate’s doing is how his probability swings too quickly. Just a couple weeks ago he had Clinton winning FL by a very good probability, now he has it favoring Trump(albeit as a toss-up more so) but with the rise of early voting, most voters making their choice well before election day, I just think he’s being too cute at times. I will grant that Nate understands polling and elections much better than I do but I think he’s being too cutesy.

I think in fairness to Nate he does try to realize that anything to happen but TP made a great comparision a couple nights ago during Game Six of the Series. The Cubs had a 7-2 lead after 7 innings. Now is it possible they could have blown that lead? Certainly, I’ve watched enough baseball over 20 years to know that teams can and do blow late leads like that but it’s unlikely. Just like it’s uncommon for a team needing a TD in football with less than 2 minutes left with all their timeouts will score the go ahead TD. I’m not hostile to Nate since I realize he’s talking simply percentages but I do think he’s had some head scartchers this election season. That said, I still appreciate his analysis.

Yeah, I’m a Yankee fan. First baseball memories were of Louisiana Lightning and Bucky Dent crushing Red Sox dreams.

Saw them through the glory years of the 96-2000 run and making the playoffs year after year. Hated when they lost to the Diamondbacks. Hated even more losing to the Sox and then seeing the Sox finally win the WS.

Hats off to the Cubs. Would have preferred seeing the Indians win, but what can you do. The Mrs. can tell you that I predicted the game 7 going to extra innings well in advance. Guess I wanted to see more baseball - and put the teams through the wringer for one final extra kick.

So, for my next prediction - the Cubs owners will do substantial renovations to Wrigley Field so as to make way for the next Curse.

Oh, and hats off to Theo Epstein, who is the Curse Killer. He’s led the Sox and the Cubs to the promised land. Next up would be a stint as the Nationals GM or the Indians.

Many other GOPers are doing the same. As I’ve been sounding like a broken record, the GOP will vote for Trump because he’s the GOP nominee. It doesn’t matter how bigoted or misogynistic he is or even if he raped an underage girl or sexually harassed/assaulted multiple women (the women corroborate what HE said btw).

The problem the GOP has had with Trump isn’t the policy or positions, but his style. He’s too blunt and direct with his hate and bigotry. The GOP has long cultivated the irrational hate and bigotry and fear. Trump is a direct consequence of years of this cultivation. He speaks in language that the core GOP voters want to hear. He’s unleashed their inner bigot - and we see it from David Duke on down.

So, when “intellectuals” and right wing “pundits” now say that they’re coming around to Trump, the reality is that they were always going to end up there. Because their moral and ethical depravity has been on display for a long time. This is just publicly acknowledging what we’ve seen and cataloged for a long time.

And that’s honestly probably the tightening we’re seeing. There was a lot of self-denial about voting for Trump but many of these types like Hewitt at the end of the day will vote Trump. I personally don’t see it being enough to propel him to a win fortunately.

I didn’t know about that. Damn.

There was a documentary of the fight the residents put up from PBS’ southern California affiliate KCET which showed the extent of the forced displacement of the original residents. They were given offers way below market-rate for their property. Given the lack of awareness of their property value, they took it without hesitation. But when they tried to purchase property elsewhere in Los Angeles, they couldn’t afford it because it was less than what the normal market rate was at the time.

Those who stayed in defiance were forcibly removed and had their homes bulldozed to make way for the stadium.

That is why I can not in any conscience see a game over there. My friends say I’m being unreasonable because it happened long ago, but the residents that were affected are still alive and have not been granted justice for it to this day.

Especially true because they have different ownership. That said, I admit I think less of the local Washington Redskins since their own was one of the worst racists in sports history and the Kennedy DOI had to threaten to remove their lease if they didn’t integrate. But also said, current owner Snyder’s showed a lot of insensitivity towards Native Americans.

The City and Robert Moses refused, citing the need to obtain other lands, and Moses offered to build a new stadium in Queens - where the World’s Fair was ultimately built.

O’Malley ran off to LA as a result.

The Mets ended up getting that new stadium - Shea Stadium in Queens.

That’s the main issue for me. For as long as they have yet to receive adequate compensation that is equal to the injustice they suffered, I can’t attend a game over there. I know we can’t change the past obviously, but if they were made right the first time around I would at least be able to attend a Dodgers game on the home front and have a great time in the process.

Even though I’m obviously not a Mexican-American nor do I have any personal attachment to Chavez Ravine, nonetheless if you strive for justice you have to do it for everybody.

Agreed, I’m not blaming it on the Dodgers at all. Otherwise I wouldn’t be such a devoted fan of them to begin with.

I don’t think the FBI should be kept together at this point. They have a wildly toxic history, and should be split into three pieces.

A Domestic Law-Enforcement Agency (Could the US Marshals Service do that?)

A Domestic Counter-Intelligence and Anti-Terrorism Service (Like MI5)

And a Law Enforcement agency that deal explicitly and only with Crimes on Native American Reservations, and dealing criminals who go on and off the Reservations (Their is nothing in the world like this. The US would have to figure it out on its own).

Dividing agencies doesn’t clear the problem, it only spreads it around. The problem is not the agency. The problem is specific people within the agency that need to either be retrained or removed. Specifically, though, the guy at the top is causing issues.

What you’re seeing in the FBI is what the Bush administration wanted to do to all of the executive departments. A lot of their appointees became “career” personnel specifically to wreak this kind of havoc in the government.

re: #499 HappyWarrior

Right now, there is a little talked about crisis on the Reservations.

Serious crime on Indian reservations has historically been required (by the 1885 Major Crimes Act, 18 U.S.C. §§1153, 3242, and court decisions) to be investigated by the federal government, usually the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and prosecuted by United States Attorneys of the United States federal judicial district in which the reservation lies.[27]

Tribal courts were limited to sentences of one year or less,[28] until on July 29, 2010 the Tribal Law and Order Act was enacted which in some measure reforms the system permitting tribal courts to impose sentences of up to three years provided proceedings are recorded and additional rights are extended to defendants.[29][30] The Justice Department on January 11, 2010 initiated the Indian Country Law Enforcement Initiative which recognizes problems with law enforcement on Indian reservations and assigns top priority to solving existing problems.

The Department of Justice recognizes the unique legal relationship that the United States has with federally recognized tribes. As one aspect of this relationship, in much of Indian Country, the Justice Department alone has the authority to seek a conviction that carries an appropriate potential sentence when a serious crime has been committed. Our role as the primary prosecutor of serious crimes makes our responsibility to citizens in Indian Country unique and mandatory. Accordingly, public safety in tribal communities is a top priority for the Department of Justice.

Emphasis was placed on improving prosecution of crimes involving domestic violence and sexual assault.[31]

Passed in 1953, Public Law 280 (PL 280) gave jurisdiction over criminal offenses involving Indians in Indian Country to certain States and allowed other States to assume jurisdiction. Subsequent legislation allowed States to retrocede jurisdiction, which has occurred in some areas. Some PL 280 reservations have experienced jurisdictional confusion, tribal discontent, and litigation, compounded by the lack of data on crime rates and law enforcement response.[32]

As of 2012, a high incidence of rape continued to impact Native American women.

And this article.

In theory, the FBI should be assisting with these cases, but they quite simply don’t. They ignore them. The best way to stop that, in my view, is to have a specialized Law Enforcement Branch to deal with this.

US Marshals/FBI have some overlap in capabilities and responsibilities, but they are separate, and I think the FBI has a vastly larger budget.

The problem with making two agencies is one guy has a domestic case…and he also has a counter-terrorism case, and when the split happens, they have to bring a different guy in and get him up to speed, maybe rebuild relationships between sources.

Not saying it can’t or shouldn’t be done, I’m just spitballing potential problems.

What I like about the WS is that it’s a series. I mean do or die has its own appeal I guess too and I understand why football playoff games are not series for obvious reasons but I love a good dramatic series like what we just saw with the Cubs and Indians.

Probably because a baseball team played more than 160 regular season games, the football team 1/10 that many. In the playoffs, a baseball team to advance has to play more/win more than the football team does.

Larger sample size to choose the “best” or “most deserving” teams.

I’ve got:
Yankee (Old - post 1970s renovation and New)
Shea
CitiField
Camden Yards
Rogers (Toronto)
AT&T (Giants)

Got a long way to get to the rest.

Other than Fenway games and all the games at Yankee Stadium (when I was in high school and would cut school to go to games all the time—had an interesting encounter with Vic Power once, but that’s a story for another day) my best ballpark experience was at the Astrodome. My friend worked for the Astros, so we got to watch games from the bullpen area, which was right behind home plate—I got to see Vida Blue pitch there. Somewhere I have a piece of original Astroturf that they made into souvenirs when they took it out.

Also, when Mickey Lolitch got traded to the Mets, he rented my parents’ condo in Valley Cottage.

A big reason is because a baseball team consists of three components: pitching, hitting, and fielding. You aren’t going to get very far having only two of those.

A football team has more subdivisions, and you can get pretty far by being stronger in one area and weaker than another. On offense, a team that can run well can compensate for having an average quarterback, or conversely, having a really good quarterback and receivers reduces the need for a good running back.

I think it also, though, has to do with only playing 16 games in a regular season. That doesn’t give you a whole lot of stats to work with to see what’s working and what isn’t. So, teams experiment, and what might get them through their division might fail under pressure from other more rounded teams.

531
HappyWarrior  Nov 3, 2016 • 9:32:43am

I said it last night but the true magic of the sport of baseball is you can’t run out the clock. I think that people who find the sport boring miss that IMO. I mean I won’t slam anyone for finding baseball boring because everyone’s entitled to their opinion but I just don’t see how anyone could think that.

What you’re seeing in the FBI is what the Bush administration wanted to do to all of the executive departments. A lot of their appointees became “career” personnel specifically to wreak this kind of havoc in the government.

The FBI’s issues probably have less to do with Bush seeding the organization with hacks and more with the radicalization of Republicans as a whole. Law enforcement agencies attract Republicans in numbers disproportionate to their share of the total population . Even though FBI agents are professionals, at least some of them are going to be infected by the prion disease running rampant through the Republican base. We see the same thing with many other law enforcement agencies if they don’t effectively police themselves.

It’s also a function of the rules of the game. In football, basketball, and hockey you can run plays for your best players in high leverage situations. In baseball, your best players might not get plate appearances in high leverage situations. Likewise, your best pitcher might not be available for close out games of a series because he pitched a day or two earlier.

You’re giving him too much credit. He is doing what he’s always done, giving the crowd in front of him what they want to hear. The people that attend Trump rallies believe Clinton is the reincarnation of Al Capone, they want to hear that she is crooked and a criminal and about to be indicted. Trump knows this, so that’s what he tells them. It’s what con men do.

I think it’s that too. He got a lot of publicity last election and praise. As I said, I still appreciate his analysis but there’s just something I think he’s missing here with his analysis. I personally don’t think you change states that dramatically especially with early voting at a historical high this election.

I think people who disregard what he’s seeing and saying are sticking their heads into the sand. Complacency is the enemy, people. I’d far rather people be a little spooked by Silver’s model and urge people to vote rather than look at Wang’s model and assume everything’s okay.

In particular, Nate Silver has been trying to tell us that the undecided vote is still pretty high. The latest Florida poll, for example, has about 4% of the vote undecided. This is pretty high late in the game. Another 3% are voting for Johnson or Stein - historically, third party candidate support collapses late and those voters ‘return home’. So we have a lot of uncertainty still. 1) Who will undecideds choose? There’s good evidence that many undecideds this year are Republicans who really don’t want to support Trump but either hate Hillary or really care about conservative issues like the Supreme Court. If they go 80-20 for Trump that’s a big deal. 2) Will Johnson voters abandon Johnson, and if so, who will they choose? In most years, the libertarian candidate draws from the GOP but this year it seems to steal equally from both candidates. 3) Will Stein voters switch votes, and does anyone care? Will the hatred of Clinton from the democratic primary keep that 1% from going home? Will they go to Trump?

I still think the fundamentals of the race favor Clinton, and I’m bullish on Clinton picking up Florida, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, which is effectively the ball game. But Silver is absolutely correct in saying that this is not a done deal. We need to worry about the fence sitters, and we need to do everything we can to bring them home for Clinton.

That’s fair. I am just confused how he can say a couple weeks ago that Clinton had a 75% chance of winning FLA for example and now he has it practically 50/50. I just don’t see what has changed in the past two weeks that would have done that. I’m not saying it’s over by any means nor do I discount him and his models but I just feel skeptical for some reason. I admit, I may be subscribing to confirmation bias.

The history of Chavez Ravine and the forced displacement of Mexican-American residents to build the stadium. They got majorly screwed in the 50’s.

I recall hearing that GWB was part of a group that inflicted the same on a poor neighborhood in Arlington, TX to build a stadium for the Rangers.

Did The Fix delete a tweet or something?

Cillizza posted an article last night where he rhapsodized about the iconic FBI, citing Clarice Starling and Elliot Ness as examples.

Someone helpfully pointed out that Ness worked for the Treasury Department and Starling was a fictional character. Cillizza stealthily removed those references, from the look of it.

re: #580 HappyWarrior

That’s fair. I am just confused how he can say a couple weeks ago that Clinton had a 75% chance of winning FLA for example and now he has it practically 50/50. I just don’t see what has changed in the past two weeks that would have done that. I’m not saying it’s over by any means nor do I discount him and his models but I just feel skeptical for some reason. I admit, I may be subscribing to confirmation bias.

Because new data changes things. And the polls HAVE tightened. As a parallel, look at this graph of Win Expectancy from last night’s baseball game.

fangraphs.com

At the beginning of the 8th inning, the Indians had about a 4% chance of winning the game. Just an inning later, due to a couple of big hits, that shot up to about 63%. New inputs into the model change everything. In the case of baseball, they look at these odds by looking at historical data - very simplified, in every situation where the game has been tied in the ninth and your team has had a runner on second base with one out, that team has gone on to win the game 63% of the time.

We don’t have that rich panoply of data for elections, so Nate instead runs thousands of election simulations, where he looks at the most recent state of the polls, and then assumes that each state is going to fall somewhere within a standard deviation of those polls. He does some more wizardry, where he links demographics in nearby states together — If Clinton overperforms in North Carolina, she’s likely to overperform in Georgia, Virginia and Florida as well, for example. A collapse in black support will wound her there, but not affect her much in New Hampshire. And so on.

Which is to say, Nate looks at all polling data and expects the electiont o not be decided by a straight up popular vote, but he does expect states and demographics to be linked. It is not a perfect model. But it is one that gives credence to the idea that, say, a new event that really turns off one particular demographic could really swing the whole fucking thing. Which is why Obama and John Lewis are down south, trying to energize the African American vote in NC and FL today.
