Wingnut logic: Man with a sign opposing Trump is dangerous but Baby Dick Ted is fine with having many guns on stage. Nugent is such a pathetic hack. Loves to act like a tough guy but everyone knows he’s just a big baby who hides behind his guns because he knows he’s a fucking pathetic old man who can’t accept modernity.

We need to remember who Bernie Kerik is.

Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, President George W. Bush appointed Kerik as the interior minister of the Iraqi Coalition Provisional Authority. In 2004, Bush nominated Kerik to be the head of the Department of Homeland Security. However, Kerik soon withdrew his candidacy, explaining that he had employed an illegal immigrant as a nanny. His withdrawal resulted in state and federal investigations as a result of which in 2006 Kerik pleaded guilty in Bronx Supreme Court to two unrelated ethics violations (unclassified misdemeanors) and was ordered to pay $221,000 in fines. Kerik then pleaded guilty in 2009 in the Southern District of New York to 8 federal charges, including tax fraud and false statements, and on February 18, 2010, was sentenced to four years in federal prison.[

From one of my heroes, Jonathan Kozol (who I was rooting for to be named Sec. of Education at one time), a wonderful explanation of why people should be opposed to the charter school expansion on the ballot in Massachusetts (and really, anywhere)

Slice it any way you want. Argue, as we must, that every family ought to have the right to make whatever choice they like in the interests of their child, no matter what damage it may do to other people’s children. As an individual decision, it’s absolutely human; but setting up this kind of competition, in which parents with the greatest social capital are encouraged to abandon their most vulnerable neighbors, is rotten social policy. What this represents is a state-supported shriveling of civic virtue, a narrowing of moral obligation to the smallest possible parameters. It isn’t good for Massachusetts, and it’s not good for democracy.

WTF?

Man In Critical Condition After Explosion At DE ‘Punkin Chunkin’ Contest

Police in Delaware are investigating an explosion at a “Punkin Chunkin” contest in Bridgeville, Delaware that sent a man to the hospital in critical condition.

“Punkin Chunkin” is a contest where teams compete to see who can chuck pumpkins the greatest distance across a field using a catapult or other mechanical device. Investigators say the explosion today involved an apparatus being used in the contest.

Combustion devices are not allowed, but air cannons are. They differ from the popular potato guns, which ignite WD-40 or some similar fuel to propel a potato at potentially lethal velocity. One of the most fearsome of these contraptions is named (what else?) “The Dic-Tater.”

He’s an almost forgotten hero of mine, too. I saw him speak at the University of Redlands (CA) in 1979 or so. A bunch of fellow students read The Night is Dark and I am Far From Home and it caused two to drop out and one to join the Peace Corp and then turn into a Republican. O:

I was reading “Ordinary Resurrections” in a coffee shop and burst into tears—didn’t think reading a non-fiction book about education in the Bronx would require a safe place for reading, but apparently it did.

That Fred Rodgers worked with Kozol on some of his projects made me love Mr. Rodgers more than ever as well.

I loved that when the execrable Bernie Goldberg wrote his “100 People Who are Screwing Up America,” Kozol was number 9—definitely a badge of honor (Al Franken was #37)

I did my part—Mass. sister who hadn’t voted in 25 years voted straight Dem ticket and voted no on 2 per my advice. (I also impersonated one of my nieces on a phone poll when I was at her house in August.)

I’m curious to see if my niece who is a public school teacher voted no—I would guess she did, as she teaches in a public pre-school that mostly serves disabled kids. At one point she was kind of anti-the-teachers’ union, but then they stood up for her when somebody wrongly accused her of something and she changed her view.

I wasn’t aware of the incident I brought up until Joe mentioned it. It honestly completely changed my mind about him and how I approached him when he posted. I never baited him or anything like that but I no longer saw him as an overly partisan but perhaps well meaning guy. As I said, there’s something really low about a guy who goes after a parent who lost their child in a war. As much as I think the lady who blames Clinton for her son’s death in Benghazi is mistaken, I will not condone any personal attacks on her. I think she’s wrong of course but I’d be horrified if the Clinton-Kaine campaign did to her what Trump did in fact to the Khans and DF to Joe.

As for giving D_F the benefit of the doubt, you’re obviouosly entitled to your own opinion/feelings on the matter, but I’m done with that WRT anyone who’s stupid (or partisan) enough to convince themselves that Trump is less dangerous in terms of the U.S. being able to survive a given presidency.

The vast majority of us who are members of the minority groups his campaign has had in its crosshairs can’t afford the luxury of giving the benefit of the doubt to anyone who voices that s/he regards Trump as the lesser evil, regardless of how that person actually votes.

I thought he was going to burst into tears talking to us! He looked so sad. I’m glad he’s still speaking at 80 (and so well!)

He has done some wonderful interviews on c-span. He truly is a remarkable man.

After reading many of his earlier books, I thought Ordinary Resurrections would be happier (the subtitle was Children in the Years of Hope!) but the stories were so sad. I remember one section really stood out about how companies would go into middle schools and even late grades in elementary schools in poor areas to try to steer kids toward vocational or support service careers, instead of even allowing that a poor child might have ambition to be a doctor or a lawyer.

Ellen Goodman wrote an article when that book came out—have never been able to find it again, but it was at the time the whole Elian Gonzales story was in the new—her premise was that if you wanted to see what horrors can befall children, the Elian in the Bronx in Kozol’s book should capture your attention.

Drive-by: I’m sure this will surprise exactly no one, but D_F appears to be supporting Trump over Clinton now. Just for the record, in case he ever comes around again:

[Embedded content]

We all knew Dark will pull the lever for Trump, because, in his mind, he has no choice; his old man’s a Republican, so, as not to disappoint his old man, Dark’s a Republican too. On top of that, Dark treats politics like sports, in that he’s all RAH RAH GO TEAM, regardless of the reality of what his “team” is doing to everyone else, even though he has shown himself to be intelligent enough to grok how big a piece of shit the GOP is these days.

Pardon me if it’s a bit blunt, but if Dark never darkens the doorstep of LGF again, nothing of any real value will be lost; IMNSHO, he’s a spineless worm with shit morals and shit principles.

I honestly do not think I have ever gotten into the language of misogyny to express my disdain for a female politician myself. I would point out this was no “youthful indiscretion” on DF’s part…he was certainly over 30 when he said that.

My biggest problem is the constant paying of lip service to religious/social tolerance & environmental science followed by full throated endorsements for politicians who turn up their nose at both.

Yeah, I meant to point that out too. In fact, DF was older than I am now when he did that. I agree with your big problem. He’ll criticize homophobia,Islamaphobia, hostility to non-believers, etc but then go right around and support that party. One of the few times I actually felt literally angry with him was over a personal thing. Rautner, the governor he loved telling us was a good example of what a 21st century GOP governor should be cut Autism services on Autism Awareness Day in your state(I am remembering right that you’re in Illinois as well right?), that just infuriated me. I’m lucky being of the white middle to upper class. I have a lot of family support as well but a lot of other people on the spectrum who may not be as well off or have that family support needed that help for those services and DF just blamed the previous Democrats for how they handled the budget in Illinois for justifying Rautner’s cuts. It really pissed me off. I mean don’t get me wrong. His apologies for Walker’s union busting in Wisconsin pissed me off too but autistic issues is obviously very personal to me. I’m sure many women Lizards felt the same way he justified the Planned Parenthood attacks.

I don’t have any hate for DF. In fact, I’d love for him to wake up one morning and realize we were right about his party and ideology but I don’t think that’s going to happen. I think the sad thing is we always wished him and his family well when he spoke of health troubles and I have no problem doing that. Political disagreement is no reason to wish ill on someone and their family but it just saddened me that he couldn’t see so much. He really feels that because his parents are Republican stalwarts that he has to live and die one and it’s just not like that. It’s a pity really. The man’s not stupid.

I’ve concluded that it’s been very hard from some partisan Republicans to emotionally come to terms what it means to be a “Republican” these days.

What is happening today is fueled by fast information, and misinformation, distribution, and that includes fads which steer public opinion.

A substantial portion, but not all, of the religious right was fueled by Southern grievances held over by a century. The division that Drumpfskind brought to the religious right exposed this quite well.

The latent racism in America became all too obvious with President Obama’s election, namely, the response from birtherism to the daily outrage.

Self-reflection is the realm of artists and contemporary art for some time has shown that the pop-art in America diverged strongly in the “two Americas”, as we now are labeled as a society.

I still believe that Clinton will carry the “Obama states” and thus win. However, Drumpfskind has pulled millions of people towards authoritarianism as well as plain old bigotry. This will not go away on November 10th.

And I know some of you still consider him a friend too so I won’t demonize him or anything like that but it’s just come home to me since I actually have a great friend who may be even more staunchly conservative than DF is ideologically but perhaps not as loyal to the GOP and he saddens me since I think he does a lot of the same things that do frustrate me with DF. He’s capable of great generosity, paid for a couple of my meals when we caught up after not seeing each other for a few years without making a deal of it but then I see him rag on people who want better wages or on entitlements and it just saddens because I don’t think it occurred to him ever that one of his best friends (me) has had such a hard time finding employment. So, if you guys want to know why I may come off hard on DF, it’s because it’s seeing something that’s come home to me. People are paradoxical though. Henry Ford was a raging bigot who believed his employees should be able to live well. Andrew Carnegie treated his employees terribly but yet raised millions for libraries.

One thing to also keep in mind is that in our society we are taught to believe in “brands”.

That includes the self-branding we all do.

If someone has self-branded as a “Republican”, if that is a source of their identity, then they were always going to be in for a rough time with Drumpfskind, as he is all about his brand, and his brand is “Trump”, not “Republican”.

Personally, I’ve never formed my identity from political affiliations, so I can’t really empathize with those who get so wrapped up about political parties.

Understood. I remember that incident. It was pretty fucking stupid on his part. And he’s the poster child for people screaming that Trump isn’t the GOP, yet he steadfastly voted Republican when it was clear the party was going full metal psycho.

That said: I can see DF being cognitively dissonant enough to vote straight GOP except for Trump, and then walk away thinking he’s not part of the problem.

If I’m wrong, I’m wrong; maybe DF is one of those secret Trump supporters we’re hearing so much about. However, that tweet is not saying he’s voting for Trump. He’s saying he thinks Trump would be a far better POTUS.

If he is saying the Trump would be a far better POTUS, then he will vote for him. Period.

At first he was critical of Trump and was against him all the way up to when Trump was nominated. Then he wallowed for a couple weeks and then out came the Three -C’s Hillary is comments. It was all over by then, decision made. He was going to vote for Trump.

It can happen with anything. One of the things that was hardest for me to let go of when I stopped smoking after my aneurysm, was my identity as a smoker. I smoked for nearly 40 years (started when I was 13). I smoked pretty heavily for most of those years too—if I didn’t have a cigarette in my hand I had probably jst run out and was on my way to the store to buy more.

I didn’t notice until I quit how deeply that identity had etched itself into my psyche.

Freepers are offering up prayers:

Dear Lord: We know You are on Your throne. We ask Your will is done in this election on Tuesday.

We ask You, Lord Jesus, to reveal wickedness in high places, all deceit and lies in the voting process, so the vote count is true, and any chicanery with the vote is exposed and rectified.

We ask that You uncloak those in power who may actually be perpetrating occult practice against You and Your church. We ask that all occult ritual, prayer, curses and assignments against You and Your will for America be severed and the perpetrators of such vile practices be revealed for all to see in their unholiness.
*snip*
Finally, may the true motives of both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton be revealed for all Americans to see, so America can vote knowing the truth before the final votes are cast. In Jesus’ holy name, Amen. (emphasis added)

Actually, I can get on board with that last part.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump ends his speech with this: “Go out and vote Michigan. We’re bringing the cars back.”

What’s this “WE” shit?

I remember 2009, when all my Republican friends told me that the American auto industry had been taken over by the Government and we’d all be driving Chevy Volts in a little while.

I think of that sometimes, when I get into my Dodge and hit the gas.

I still believe that Clinton will carry the “Obama states” and thus win. However, Drumpfskind has pulled millions of people towards authoritarianism as well as plain old bigotry. This will not go away on November 10th.

Why would it go away, it’s been there all along?

To say otherwise would be to ignore reality.

It may have not been as visible and Trump help let it back out, but it was always there. Just needed to know the whistles and the songs.

While we’re piling on, what got me was his “death before dishonor” mantra, but when you’d point out a Republican military guy lying his ass off on Fox news, he’d defend it as “oh, he’s just doing it for the money” so it’s ok.

The cars never left, we made just over 12 million vehicles last year (4.16m cars and 7.93m commercial vehicles), that is second only to China (CHYYYYNAAAA). We lead the world in commercial vehicle production and are fourth in cars (China, where the domestic market is exploding, Japan, and Germany are ahead of us; South Korea is right behind us).

Wikipedia’s Hatch Act page is a little fuzzy. It says employees are permitted to “express opinions about candidates and issues”, but cannot “wear political buttons at work”. Which is odd, because the FBI Director could go on Twitter as DeplorableCoDoggUCLS85 and call Clinton a see-you-next-Tuesday, but he’d get in trouble if he wore a MAGA hat at a casual day hot dog cookout.

It sounds like the definition of pornography before the Supreme Court. Which is fine… I notice that Julian Castro may have broken the law when he endorsed Clinton on TV earlier this year, for example.

A scene from Podesta’s witch gathering!
Podesta
Thrice the brinded cat hath mew’d.

DWS
Thrice and once the hedge-pig whined.

Clinton
Harpier cries “‘Tis time, ‘tis time.”

Podesta
Round about the cauldron go;
In the poison’d entrails throw.
Toad, that under cold stone
Days and nights has thirty-one
Swelter’d venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i’ the charmed pot.

All
Double, double, toil and trouble; (10)
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.

DWS
Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg and howlet’s wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

All
Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

Clinton
Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf,
Witches’ mummy, maw and gulf
Of the ravin’d salt-sea shark,
Root of hemlock digg’d i’ the dark,
Liver of blaspheming Jew,
Gall of goat, and slips of yew
Silver’d in the moon’s eclipse,
Nose of Turk and Tartar’s lips,
Finger of birth-strangled babe (30)
Ditch-deliver’d by a drab,
Make the gruel thick and slab:
Add thereto a tiger’s chaudron,
For the ingredients of our cauldron.

All
Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

DWS
Cool it with a baboon’s blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.

[Enter George Soros, to the other three Witches]

George Soros
O well done! I commend your pains;
And every one shall share i’ the gains;
And now about the cauldron sing,
Live elves and fairies in a ring,
Enchanting all that you put in.

[Music and a song: ‘Black spirits,’ etc,Soros retires]

DWS
By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes.
Open, locks,
Whoever knocks!

You know, I’m not too fond of the CoC types but to their credit, they see the fallacy of right wing populism and right wing reactionary attitudes about minority groups. A lot of it self-serving but better than the know nothings. I said it the other day but the paleocons always pissed me off more than the neocons.

The dead weight we will be moving are slot machines. Those suckers weigh anywhere between 150 to 750 lbs depending on the platform. Take them off of the stands if they are uprights or move them off the duct if the are slants/novelty games. Facilities gets to do the actual cable pull, but the slot techs get to remove and then reinstall the actual machines. We have about 60 rows left to do in the next two days.

How to go through 650,000 emails in a short time:

1) Linux has tools that will return only emails containing Clinton’s name. That removes the vast majority of emails.
2) Linux has tools to compare the emails in two databases and return only those unique to one of the databases. That leaves only emails not already reviewed by the FBI.
3) Go through only those new never before reviewed emails to, from or about Clinton.
4) Presto - all done in less than 8 days.

I could write a script that would read a collection of 650,000 emails, find the ones addressed to or from a certain person, and compare them to the existing database of emails in less than an hour. And it would probably run in less than an hour too.

This ain’t rocket surgery. It’s basic text searching and text matching, and I would hope the FBI has people who can write this kind of code.

re: #453 Backwoods_Sleuth

A guitar signed by Bruce Springsteen sold for $280,000 last night at the 10th annual Stand Up for Heroes charity show for veterans. Stand Up for Heroes is the brainchild of ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff and his wife Lee. Bob was nearly killed in 2006 when he was embedded with US forces in Iraq.

The guitar also came with a promise from Springsteen- who performed for the 10th year in a row- of all “the hot dogs and hamburgers” the winner could eat with him at his favorite New Jersey dive. Springsteen may have also thrown in his mother’s lasagna.

[…]

Later in the evening, Springsteen and the four comics helped auction off a Harley Davidson motorcycle that had been donated by a local dealer. When the bidding seemed slow, each of the stars offered to donate $50,000 to the charity if someone would buy the bike for $150,000. That did the trick. The comics also promised to eat dinner with the winner, just to get things moving.

These fuckers don’t believe in evolution. It’s amazing they don’t believe computers are the work ofthe devil. Fuck these as Sholes.

That could prove to be the difference. I honestly feel really good about her chances in Florida. I really think she’s going to end up winning it by a bigger margin than Obama did in 2012 against Romney and honestly maybe even more than in 2008 too. Pundits are really under-estimating the Hispanic turnout and it’s going to be Ground Zero in Florida. Now hopefully they throw Rubio out too.

Yeah I think it’s going to take a great turnout for Clinton to do it. It’s really unfortunate since he obviously doesn’t want the job but knows it’s his best shot should he ever attempt to run for President again. Fortunately, I think his time has come and gone. He’s not going to be a new flavor of shit cream for the GOP bosses to try to throw at the voters. I expect he’ll leave the Senate first chance he gets.

My wife and I live in Pacific, Missouri on around 10 acres with three horses and a couple donkeys. This is mostly Trump country - evidence by a few Hilary for Prison signs about. We only have one horse blanket and a neighbor had a couple available so my wife went over to have a look.

Somehow the talk got around to the election and the neighbor lady said she was so nervous her candidate would not win. Of course, my wife said “me too”! That was when the neighbor saw my wife’s Nasty Woman shirt and immediate hugged her and exclaimed….”Oh my God I’m so happy! Trump is going to win!”. She then proceeded to tell her about her terrible liberal daughter (who we think is supporting her).

[…]

By contrast, Senator Tim Kaine attracted a whopping 24 people to a rally in Dubuque, Iowa and 30 (yes, thirty) to an event in West Palm Beach, Florida last week.

ORLY?

One of the men vying to be the next vice president of the United States made a stop in Iowa on Wednesday. Democrat Tim Kaine spoke at the Loras College Field House in Dubuque.

About 300 people packed into the Loras College field house. That small building has hosted several major political candidates, including President Obama.

People live longer lives now. My mom never got to know her two grandfathers who were both coal miners because of the damn mines. My one great grandfather was otherwise very healthy when he died of black lung at the age of 63. I was lucky to be able to know my grandfather, who worked as a brickmason for many years. It wasn’t easy work but at least he was able to live a pretty healthy life and didn’t spent his last days in unbearable pain like his father and father in law did. So yeah I’m glad the mines are in decline and so is my coal miner’s daughter, grandmother.

I ran into at a county event after we first met, when I was still a Republican, and me and him talked for close to an hour joking and teasing each back and forth about stuff going on locally to nationally.

It’s bad when both me and him are at the local Democratic campaign office because we’ll sit there and just tell Caroline County stories and jokes all day while the local organizer gives us exacerbated looks because it means I am not making phone calls.

It’s going to be really competitive this year in VA-10. I think Comstock is afraid of Luann Bennett and unlike Frank Wolf, she doesn’t have the long record to go on. She’s actually running ads stressing her bipartisanship. Ha! Barbara, you voted for funding PP and for alot of other right wing bullshit and you’d vote against keeping the federal government open too if there weren’t so many federal workers in our district too.

Is this Philly strike anything to seriously worry about? Don’t want to come off like a worrywart but PA is important. My guess is even if it does have an effect, I don’t see it being enough to carry Trump. From what I understand, Trump’s really unpopular in the Philly burbs and I think that could help. Obama did well there too but I think Trump will be less compettive there than McCain and Romney were.

Yeah my only problem is I don’t drive and it’s a bit of a drive out there. If I were still at GMU, I’d be going no doubt about it.

One of the volunteers at the local Democratic office was joking that it sucks that Virginia has gone so strongly blue because we don’t get the A-level treatment anymore. The university the volunteer attends had everyone there in 2008 (including Obama and Palin), but the best they could get this year was Jill Stein.

Obama got to know GMU very well heh. But yeah we’re not really even a true swing state this election. We’re not what Maryland is but we’ve entered the likely Democratic sphere. Man what a difference from 2004 when I felt the biggest difference I could make was canvassing for Kerry in Pennsylvania. I still remember that day very well. Rainy day and we met near a Starbucks at McPherson Square and the bus took us to West Chester, Pa. I had to be among the youngest people there. Most doors we knocked on were nice.

Don’t feel bad. This is the first campaign I’ve gone door-to-door for. I wrote on my blog a lot about some of the local races over the years and I think that may have changed some minds.

Because all 60,000 are going to vote for Clinton and why shouldn’t they get their rights back? They’ve paid their debt to society. And as much as I don’t like guns, I feel non-violent felons should be able to own guns after they serve their time too.
