Reporter Who Saw Corey Lewandowski Grab Michelle Fields: Is Trump Gaslighting America?

The Big Lie is an integral part of Trump’s campaign
Politics • Views: 39,165

This is an interesting and disturbing piece by Washington Post reporter Ben Terris, who witnessed Donald Trump’s campaign manager Corey Lewandowski roughly grab and shove Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields after a speech by Trump, back near the start of all this madness.

The Trump campaign’s insidious, relentless denial of reality even started to make Terris doubt what he saw with his own eyes.

“I just want to make sure,” my editor asked me as he closed the door to his office. “He definitely grabbed her?”

It had to be the 50th time I’d heard this question, and each time it filled me with unspeakable anxiety.

Yes, he grabbed her. It happened three days earlier, in the chandelier-lit ballroom of Donald Trump’s golf club in Jupiter, Fla. Trump had just won the state’s primary, and he was celebrating in a ballroom full of Trump-branded products: steaks, water, even a magazine.

After the speech, Michelle Fields, a reporter for Breitbart, approached Trump with a question about affirmative action, when Corey Lewandowski, then Trump’s campaign manager, took her by the arm and yanked her from the candidate.

It happened right in front of me.

And yet, even though I saw it, the Trump team’s response — to claim it never happened at all — would become a small preview of a strategy the campaign would return to again and again on a much larger scale this year: Bully, don’t back down, do whatever you can to muddy up the facts.

Terris has a pretty clear understanding of the tactics used by Breitbart “News” to help Trump perpetrate these deceptions:

I turned down dozens of television interviews on the subject. I worried I might say something like: “No, I’m not 100 percent certain of my account because I’ve never been 100 percent certain about anything.” And then I’d find a Breitbart headline like: “WaPo reporter no longer sure he saw what he said he saw.”

The denial and dishonesty was so relentless that even Michelle Fields, the victim of Lewandowski’s assault, began to question her own experience.

When I spoke with Fields last week, she told me that at the time even she began questioning her own account, despite having the bruises to prove it.

“The Trump campaign did everything they could to get me to question my own reality,” she said. “You don’t think that will ever happen to you, but it did.”

[…]

“Trump gaslighted me,” Fields said. “I worry now that he’s gaslighting the country.”

One thing Rage Furby Chuck C. Johnson doesn’t lack: a wildly inflated sense of his own importance.

And of course he’d be cool with a violent takeover of the US government by the right wing.

Well, it has to be the right kind of right wing coup. My guess is that a white nationalist coup that would see him as a race traitor (and thus giving him a spot in line for the firing line) because he married an Asian woman would ultimately not be to Chuck’s taste.

New right wing spin - the agents involved in the Clinton investigation are being forced into retirement.

Five FBI agents (the investigation of HRC unit who refused to play ball) are losing their jobs today via forced retirement.

Hoft retweeted (because of couse he would).

Unsourced BS mind you, with a kernel of truth.

The truth: FBI requires mandatory retirement at 57 or 20 years of service, with some caveats. For one thing, anyone approaching this age must be given notice of the retirement (60 days notice). There are exceptions to this rule too.

So, if this is to be believed, then these agents decided to fuck with the election because they were on their way out anyways (they had to know they were up against the mandatory retirement age), and had no worry about repercussions within the FBI.

Out to lunch with the kids. Their schools have a workshop day, so I’m working remotely. (I would have anyway, as my son is dealing with strep throat, again. Good timing to not miss school, kid.)

After we eat I think we’ll have a talk about how I’m going to be very preoccupied tomorrow night, and while I think I’ll be pleased with the results, hopefully early, there’s a chance I won’t be. I need to prepare them for a foul mood that may last for quite a while.

I also need to reiterate to them to avoid discussion of politics at school.

Trump is endorsed by my local Fascist Fishwrap. Smell the insanity:

The 2016 presidential campaign has been a disheartening affair. Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton are the worst nominees in memory. However, one of them will be president come Jan. 20. We reluctantly recommend Mr. Trump.

The eight years of the Obama administration have resulted in a decline in the respect for the United States, an anemic economy, a politically correct but much weakened military, and a host of constitutionally questionable executive orders and other unilateral actions by the president. But the most discouraging development has been the politicization of the Internal Revenue Service, the Justice Department and the FBI. To put Mrs. Clinton in charge of the executive branch would be a disaster, given her total lack of integrity and principle. By no standard is an individual with this record fit for the highest office in the land.

Mr. Trump is no prize, either. Since the outset of the campaign, he has made headlines with bizarre, offensive and juvenile remarks. He also has demonstrated ignorance on policy. Everything was predictable. This is why our first major editorial on the race - published July 1, 2015 - suggested Republicans support Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker or former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. However, in light of Mrs. Clinton’s appalling record and personal qualities, Mr. Trump should get the nod.

On his website, Mr. Trump portrays himself as a supporter of conservatism. If he becomes president, he would be wise to surround himself with capable advisers, listen to them and craft truly conservative policies. A good place to start would be reversing the Obama administration’s anti-business agenda that has worn down the economy and strained the federal budget. There is reason to believe Mr. Trump gets this. Meanwhile, for the sake of national security and the dignity of the presidency, Mr. Trump should think before he speaks. If Mr. Trump takes this approach, there may be a chance to move the United States beyond the trainwreck of the past eight years.

Its relieving to see Trump’s odds drop on 538’s model and Nv NC and Fl turn from pink to light blue. It is a reminder that Democrats still have to get out and vote tomorrow, no matter how difficult Republicans and other deplorables make it. I got my absentee ballot mailed in as soon as I got it.

What infuriated me was thinking about how rightfully horrified the American public was seeing how the Axis Powers treated prisoners- war and civilian and then close to 60 years later justifying that same kind of treatment just because they were seen as evil. It may have been years ago but it’s s stain and legacy of the Bush years that can’t be ignored.

I only see them every four years running for president.

Yeah can’t remember the last time they ran a candidate for office here. I don’t like the Libertarians but they seem at least interested in doing the work you do to build a party. The Greens are basically what wingnuts think an average liberal is I’d say.

I’m trying to learn Spanish. I’m starting in my car. I’m trying to figure out at what point do I attempt to talk to people who know the language.

ASAP. I took Spanish One three times. Jr. high, high school and college. The six year old was more help in some ways.

The Libertarians seem to be in a position to take over as the opposition party if the GOP disintegrates (though premature notices of the GOP’s demise have occurred before).

At the local Mexican restaurants, I will normally speak in Spanish, but sometimes the Portuguese I know will get mixed in when I get ahead of myself. That usually gets a ¿Que?

Yeah heh I can see how that confuses. I’m a little shy about attempting to speak other languages. Not to be rude but because I’m afraid of butchering pronunciation but I know efforts are appreciated.

I have been readings about Romney’s failed 2012 bid. He pulled the plug on campaign funds immediately after suddenly after his concession speech.

NBC Nov 8 2012

- From the moment Mitt Romney stepped off stage Tuesday night, having just delivered a brief concession speech he wrote only that evening, the massive infrastructure surrounding his campaign quickly began to disassemble itself.

Aides taking cabs home late that night got rude awakenings when they found the credit cards linked to the campaign no longer worked

Others here have mentioned this recently.

If I were working a campaign (one in particular) I would be close to home tomorrow night.

Well, butchering pronunciation is how you get corrected … no one is going to burn you at the stake for mispronouncing a word … there is embarrassment when you mispronounce a word or try to translate an English idiom into Spanish though.

My favourite is “¿Donde es el Juan?”

Amazing Trump would mention Beyoncé and Jay Z again and again at his White rallies.

The LP has some interesting internal power struggles. Some of the younger ones want to reach out to younger liberals rather than continue to court Republicans. As I said I’m not fond of the LP but they’re a lot more complex than meets the eye. That said, they need to learn pragmatism and drop the love affair with Von Mises economics.

We are building a real opposition party that is about we the people, not two wings of the corporate elite.

So, you’ll be running for Town Council next year?

That is just the point: a truly effective opposition movement has to build itself from the ground up through local and state offices, then perhaps a small caucus in the House and Senate.

I sensed a lot of idealistic energy out their surrounding Bernie, but have not seen any signs of people working to establish something at home.

There was a column by Krauthammer in the Phila Inquirer this morning that bemoaned how awful and corrupt Hillary is before getting to a handful of comments about Trump’s unfitness.

I smell setting the table for the post-election “impeach her” crazy train. ‘Cause hyperpartisan crap is his gravy train.

Yes. Yes, they do. And Taster’s Choice is good enough for me most of the time.

The only Jill Stein bumper sticker I have yet noticed was yesterday, in a very crowded and busy parking lot. The car displaying suddenly and inexplicably stopped, totally snarling up the lane for a while. Seems fitting.
Also, Google just reminded me she is a medical doctor - so I was wrong in thinking she has a PhD in Smugnorance.

It’s like H. Beam Piper said in Space Viking.

All societies rest on a barbarian base. Those people who don’t understand civilization and wouldn’t like it if they did.

It’s why I use a triangular political spectrum with the points labelled ‘democrat’, ‘aristocrat’ and ‘barbarian’. The GOP has consisted of little but aristocrats and barbarians for decades now.
