re: #663 Charles Johnson

I still think it comes down to the massive built-in negatives for Hillary.

Once a voter believes something long enough, they are unlikely to change later in life.

Plus, the real problem for the Dems may come down to the lack of turnout of young people. While supposedly overwhelmingly favoring Clinton, I wonder how many could be bothered to vote?

Probably true, but I honestly think Bernie’s supporters would have seen a victory by him as justification to expropriate my parents’ home from us.

So we needed Biden in the primary, or all our options were going to be bad, from August 2015.

But I will admit Hillary was the least-bad.

And that Bernie would have been much more electable in the general.

Hillary would have to have very long coattails to make a big difference in the Senate, and she may have ended up with no coat tails at all.

I think this community (and a lot of similar left leaning ones) discounted the hatred for Clinton and also forgot that she could pull defeat from the jaws of victory like no one else. I didn’t matter whether the hatred was fair or not. It was there all along, and whenever Democrats count on turnout to save their asses, they always get burnt.

The problem, IMO, and it may still remain even though DWS is gone, is that the DNC is out of touch with too many people.

The DNC is not the total evil that the Bernie-Bros make them out to be, but on the other hand they clearly did not encourage a new Dem candidate (without the Clinton baggage) to step up to the plate.

You always trust the people closest to the ground. Old style election vote counting at the end of the night had you driving from precinct to precinct to look at the vote totals posted by the election judges.

Modern polling machines and mail-in voting make that harder, so you should trust the people closest on the ground.

In their ‘defense’, most of the third-party voters this time around were probably too young to drive, let alone vote, when Nader stole two elections for Dubya.

The problem is, that means that if we don’t have a Chinese-modeled constitution forced on us after losing WWIII, those of us young enough to be around for 2032 will see a third party win for the candidate least in agreement to the third party’s values then, too.

My new concern is — whoever wins — how we move the country forward.

Trump has done too well, and that means there are a lot more deplorables in this country than I expected. I’m sure the first thing needs to be keeping people safe somehow. The militias will be spending the next few weeks shooting a goddamn lot of people who aren’t straight white Christian males, and I’m damned if I’ve got any clue what can be done to keep them safe.

After that: Then what? I don’t have a job and not much money for charity, but it’s a damn sure thing that whenever I can contribute again, I’m not giving a dime to anyone unless they’re supporting progressive causes. But beyond that, I have not a clue.

What do y’all think is the way forward?

It’s still possible for Clinton to end up with over 300 EVs. It may come down to more like 280, but I think 300 is still possible.

The GOP will get rid of filibuster rules in January and then they will run the table to get their program into place for a generation.

No more medicare. No medicaid. The Dept of Education gets slashed. Same with FEMA and a dozen other agencies. Social security becomes a block grant. Vote suppression gets a nationwide boost. Taxes for the rich get slashed to nil.

Muslims get ethnically cleansed…and don’t think for one minute that the congress will try to impeach Trump when he tells federal courts to “Go fuck themselves” .

Look at the bright side. Guns will be readily available, so implementing the GOP retirement plan of blowing one’s brains out will always be an option.

Sorry Lizards. We tried. We really tried.

But Trump tapped into a part of our national psyche that we’ve long thought was a thing of the past.

We assumed, this being 2016, that most of the country was past the old feelings of resentment to social progress. It appears we’ve gone backwards at least 50 years. And it’s going to take twice that amount of time to undo this.

Let’s face it. The best the GOP could come up with is Trump. And the best the Dems could come up with is Hillary. In spite of all her experience and life’s work helping others, she still has a ton of baggage. Unwarranted or not.

I hope when I wake up in the morning, this post was warrantless, but I’m going to bed assuming Trump will be the talk of the town tomorrow. It really sucks. But this also proves that us Democrats/Liberals are the ones now out of touch. Honestly. I don’t know where the party goes from here.

We will survive 4 years of Trump. But the damage will take a long, long time to undo. I’m not leaving. I’m staying to fight. Midterms, here we come.

As long as he perpetuates the two-minute hate on a daily basis, they’ll be in his corner. That’s why most of them love him in the first place—he punches down, just like they do.

The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining in. Within thirty seconds any pretence was always unnecessary. A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledge hammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric current, turning one even against one’s will into a grimacing, screaming lunatic. And yet the rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion which could be switched from one object to another like the flame of a blowlamp.

He is an immediate threat to the very fabric of our democracy, and he is not going to be constrained by “checks and balances”. Do you really think a GOP congress will impeach him when he violates the constitution and ignores the courts?

Let me repeat myself:

So far the only big surprise is Florida. It was polled as leaning Dem, and ended up Drumpf.

NC was a pegged a real toss=up in many polls.

OH was leaning Drumpf before the election (so was Iowa, a state to watch.)

CO was a toss-up in some polls but leaned Dem in others and Clinton carried it.

People worrying about MI and WI need to wait until the big Dem precincts come in.

Clinton was polled from the beginning with historic negatives, only beaten in that category later by Drumpf.

Tonight may be disappointing, but it is not surprising to those who have been paying attention.

11:12pm: Using the projections of the NY Times, Donald Trump is outperforming his pre-election polling margins by a median of 4.0 +/- 2.6 percentage points (the 8 states in the Geek’s Guide). In Senate races, Republicans are outperforming by 6.0 +/- 3.7 percentage points. A five-percentage-point polling miss would be a tremendous error by modern polling standards. After some Trump scandal involving perjury or obstruction of justice gets orchestrated traction in the media (what better click bait?); the House, having practiced on President Bill Clinton, would initiate impeachment discussions.

Resign with promise of pardon of all criminal activity, or face impeachment and possible conviction by the Senate.

Every single polling outfit basically looks like a bunch of fools now. We can’t really blame the Wangs or Silvers of the web because they were working with the polling numbers of assholes who apparently missed a 5%+ swing in Trump’s favor.

One thing we can say is that Silver’s assumption that such an unexpected swing in one state would correlate with similar swings in other states seems to have been rather more correct than a lot of pundits seemed to think.

The folks in MI seem to be under the delusion that Trump’s bringing those jobs back. He’s not, no more than he’s bringing back the coal jobs. Anybody who voted for him thinking that the trade wars he’s going to launch against China means manufacturing is coming back is not in touch with reality.

They are going to learn it the hard way. The only way this country seems to learn anything if we learn anything at all.

Realistically though, aren’t the majority of Johnson voters normally reliably republican voters? I’m just saying, the orange terror might have had a larger margin had Johnson not been in the race rather than a smaller.

Of course if more R voters had switched to D that would have been good for Clinton, but that’s not a particularly meaningful statement in re. third party voters ;)

I agree with this for the most part. It may not even be as much misogyny as it is a visceral hatred for the Clintons.
Frankly, I still resent her/their behavior from 2008 towards President Obama, and don’t get me started on mass incarceration.

Los Angeles county alone will put Clinton into the easy win category for popular vote nationwide.

But if I may, we here in California are not the problem.

From Balloon Juice:

enplaned says:
November 8, 2016 at 11:24 pm

Cassandra was the daughter of Priam, King of Troy. It was her curse to be able to tell the future, but to not be believed when she did so.

I can’t tell the future, but right from the beginning, right from 2013/2014, I knew Hillary would be a bad candidate. I don’t hate her — I don’t think she’s worse than any other politician in terms of morals, ethics, etc. She’s a smart lady, works hard. But that doesn’t matter — the country doesn’t like her. And a lot of what she did played into the narrative already laid out for her — emails, whatever.

I can’t tell the future, and god, I hope she somehow pulls this out tonight. But I have a pretty damn good idea of what it’s like to be Cassandra — and it’s like a waking fucking nightmare. And it’s been like that for most of this cycle and it’s goddamn awful tonight. I haven’t slept properly for weeks, months worrying about this goddamn election. And every fucking nightmare is coming true.

If you think I take one ounce of satisfaction from this, you’re fucking wrong. I have never been so unhappy to be right. But win or lose, Democrats better start seeing reality for what it is if they want to make progress. And they can start with the reality that the Democratic powers that be are completely fucking incompetent to have greased the skids for Hillary and putting her forward as our champion.

We need to stare reality in the face if we’re to get by this. No flinching.
