Video: Ta-Nehisi Coates Gives a Powerful Keynote Speech at the INBOUND 2016 Conference

Politics • Views: 48,077

It’s really worth it to set aside about a half hour to watch this. The day after the election, Ta-Nehisi Coates was scheduled to give a keynote address at INBOUND 2016 and had a speech on education already prepared. But instead of giving that speech, he spoke from the heart about the “mortal threat” this election poses to American democracy. Very powerful stuff.

Apparently not corrosive to democracy: all the things Trump said about conspiracies, rigged elections, and prosecuting his critics…which his followers cosigned by voting for him.

Pedants will point out that assuming that Trump voters are racist is not 100% logically certain.

What is 100% logically certain is that Trump voters are 1) bigots or 2) militantly indifferent to the bigotry of Trump and his campaign.

Since I see no real difference between 1 and 2 above, the pedants can go fuck themselves.

I wonder if we’ve just reached a point where the elections will only depend on which side turns out their base more. That is, unless we have a 9-11 or a Great Depression, people are not going to change sides if they are on one, or finally just vote because they’ve decided it’s too bad not to.

Given how close the race was, it can be some minor console that a majority of voters rejected Trump. He ended up with only 47.5% of the vote, and finished second in the popular vote. That means that 52.5% of voters chose someone else rather than Trump’s corrosive politics.

It is not much consolation, because the places where we needed some of those voters to be were not the places where they were. And too many voters stayed home. But the fact that the majority voted for a nominee not named Donald Trump gives me a sliver of hope for our future.

I thought the Supreme Court settled all that back in 1997, and not in the President’s favor.

From the article:

Donald Trump’s attorney told a federal judge Thursday he’s open to settlement talks in a class-action fraud lawsuit involving the president-elect and his now-defunct Trump University.

Attorney Daniel Petrocelli also asked during a hearing that the trial be delayed until early next year because Trump needs time to work on the transition to the presidency.

Asking for a trial continuance in order to work out a settlement is fairly common in litigation. Actually getting one is another story… judges tend to believe the best motivating factor for settlement is having a hard and fast trial date. Of course, the judge might buy the argument that Trump is unavailable due to the transition process, but it’s not like he’s going to have more free time once he’s sworn in.

Also, holy shit, the brass balls on Trump’s attorneys, they apparently sought a motion in limine (a pre-trial motion to bar the admission of certain evidence) that would have included public statements by Trump during the campaign.

The highly unusual petition would apply to Trump’s tweets, a video of Trump making sexually predatory comments about women, his tax history, revelations about his private charitable foundation and the public criticism of the judge.

One of the things I see is that Republicans believe in their platform as if it were a religion. Like any religion, I don’t see how any evidence from outsiders is going to change their minds. Kansas is a prime example. The state is being ruined by Republican policies, and their reaction in 2014 was to keep plunging forward.

I want to give something to PP & Stonekettle, but I think those will just be what I can when I can.

That’s why I want to talk with him about what we want to give, and how much, and explore the possibility of some scheduled regular donations instead of our normal once a year lump sum thing.

Also doing the lump sum thing in December on top of Christmas travel and whatnot has not been all that good for us so maybe a revisit would be a wise idea anyway.

Of course everything’s not all right….

It would be a lot easier if he were just a liar. But he’s not. He’s the consummate bullshitter, who will say literally anything to make the sale. And what he cares about is closing the deal, not what the deal is about.

This is why I doubt he’ll do anything to further investigate and harass HRC. He won, and she conceded defeat graciously. Now he’s back to ‘we should thank her for her service’. Of course, many on the Right took ‘Lock Her Up’ seriously, and they’ll be disappointed, but I don’t think he’ll support a further witch hunt.

One of the many reasons he ran?

The U.S. judge overseeing the lawsuit against President-elect Donald Trump and his Trump University told both sides they would be wise to settle the case “given all else that’s involved.”

Lawyers for the president-elect are squaring off against students who claim they were they were lured by false promises to pay up to $35,000 to learn Trump’s real estate investing “secrets” from his “hand-picked” instructors.

Earlier on Thursday, U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel tentatively rejected a bid by Trump to keep a wide range of statements from the presidential campaign out of the fraud trial.

New piece up at Stonekettle stonekettle.com

But now what? What do we do right now?

Now? Now you you set aside your goddamned idealism and your principled stand and you get practical.

Look at that map.

Look at it.

You figure out how to bridge the gap. Both the Republican Party and especially the Democrats (and all the Third Parties too), need to figure out how to reach the people in those little red squares. How to address their fears without inflaming them. We must find a way to manage both the traditional past and the unknown future and turn that map purple instead of red and blue.

That’s pretty much what needs to happen for politics to become civilized in this country.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s possible. The differences between red and blue America seem completely irreconcilable on multiple critical issues simultaneously. Even the civil war era didn’t have this problem of multiple issues, since there was only one issue in real dispute. The CSA was almost a clone of the US federal government except for the preservation of slavery written into its constitution.

Just look at the guns issue. It has no direct link with religion, identity, class or race. So it should be one of the easiest issues to deal with. But it’s hopeless, and the main reason it is hopeless is that the NRA has weaponized the paranoia of many US gun owners.

The fundamental issue in dispute is change vs. stasis (or regression), and there is no compromise on that.

Speaking of cats, there’s this stray that hangs out by the dumpsters out back. He’s pretty vocal, but he won’t come close enough to pet (don’t blame him for not trusting humans). As soon as I came out the back door, he started meowing and rubbing himself against the corner of the building, y’know like how they do when they’re asking for something pretty-please?

So I walked over to the dumpster and threw one bag in, which spooked him & caused him to run off, but I called him back and got his attention long enough for him to notice I was opening the other garbage bag. (My cat is a picky eater and doesn’t like dry food after the package has been open too long—I guess it starts to taste stale or something even though I keep it in a seal bag in a plastic food container—so I had about one cup of dry cat food in the bottom of a bag of it I was tossing, and I knew it was at the top of the trash bag because I’d just put it there.)

Where was I? Oh yeah, so I fished out the bag and asked him if he was hungry and he meowed some more and started walking back. Figuring he’d recognize the universal sound of kitty food, I shook the bag and THAT got his attention. He came running over, all fears tossed aside, and stood there loudly demanding to be fed NOW. It was too cute, so typically feline. So I dumped the food out on the ground and left him there having himself a feast. That was one of the few bright spots yesterday.

Seriously, how do you reach across that? It’s not as though there haven’t been anti-choice, pro-gun, democrats with positions tailored to the needs of the more rural counties. These democrats are the ones that have been slowly run out of these areas.

Even if I wanted there to be stasis, it’s not really in anyone’s power to grant it. The forces driving change are relentless. As far as I can tell, the only reason republicans ultimately came out on top, is that they are just a little bit more willing to lie about the causes and pretend that they can reverse them. As an example see WV. Coal’s not coming back barring some major calamity. Mechanization, superior alternatives and global competition are the big drivers of the job losses in mining, not environmentalists. Mine companies are not going to replace robots with men with pickaxes. They are not going to produce coal in WV when the coal can be mined more cheaply elsewhere. Power companies are not going to build coal power plants while natural gas is competitive, the plants are more scalable and they integrate better with wind and solar power production

Easy-peasy. We’ll just have price supports for coal mined by hand, and metals mined by small children…

Figuring he’d recognize the universal sound of kitty food, I shook the bag and THAT got his attention. He came running over, all fears tossed aside, and he stood there loudly demanding to be fed NOW. It was too cute, so typically feline. So I dumped the food out on the ground and left him there having himself a feast. That was one of the few bright spots yesterday.

That reminds me it is fast approaching the time for our annual “who gets what” charitable discussion. We’ve just been kind of letting things ride the last couple years and we may need to rejigger the numbers.
I’ll bring it up at dinner tonight. First up, Planned Parenthood.
Oh, anyone have suggestions for where to give for climate change action?

Now that my political contributions for the year (aka, setting money on fire or flushing it down the toilet for the most part) are finished, I will try to up my other donations.

My regular list is Planned Parenthood, No Kid Hungry, the local foodbank, the local charity that helps out homeless highschoolers, a halfway house run by a nun friend in PA, a couple of women’s shelters—local and one in Olympia, WA where a friend works, and now I think it’s time to expand the list.

Okay, so I just checked something out on the Trump “tax plan.” Bear with me.
Currently, if you have $50,000 in taxable income, you would pay $5183.75 plus 25% of the amount between $37,650 and $50,000 which is $3087.50 for a total tax of $8271.25. Your effective tax rate is 16.5% Simple.

But, according to the Trump “tax plan,” it does not anywhere specify these parameters. All it says is 12%, 25%, and 33%. You would pay 25% of $50,000 for a tax of $12,500.

And if you itemize deductions? You can kiss your personal exemption of $4050 goodbye as well. Since you itemize deductions, you forgo the individual deduction of $6200 already. Welcome to Trump’s America, middle class. You’re about to get fucked in the ass.

Moscow had contacts with Trump team during campaign, Russian diplomat says

Russian government officials conferred with members of Donald Trump’s campaign team, a senior Russian diplomat said Thursday, a disclosure that could reopen scrutiny of the Kremlin’s role in the president-elect’s bitter race against Hillary Clinton.

The statement came from Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who said in an interview with the state-run Interfax news agency that “there were contacts” with the Trump team.

THe Trump base is going to go ballistic if he does this a lot- you know… backing away from the very meat and potatoes of why they elected him in the first place.

I’ve said it before, Trump is not going to last 2 years into his Presidency until establishment Republicans turn on him and impeach. They fear their own long term legacies and wealth concerns should he actually follow through on his Trade tariffs and manufacturing quotas.

If they think they can impeach the base’s God-Emperor and have them meekly turn around and nominate and then elect their “safe” candidate Pence in 2020, they’re going to be really surprised at the outcome….

Hint: having your children run your businesses is NOT a blind trust.

As Jonathan Chait said back in September, before the country had totally lost its mind (and pointing out that Politico was one of the culprits who swallowed Trump’s bait)
Amazingly, Trump has managed to blur the distinction between a blind trust and the opposite of a blind trust so thoroughly that the media is now repeating his own terms. “The Republican nominee has previously indicated,” reports Politico, “that he would place the businesses in a blind trust run by his children and executives.” Again, a “blind trust run by his children and executives” is not a thing.

Revisionism creeping in, courtesy of ABC… first the headline:

President Obama’s Long History of Insulting Donald Trump

Nasty Obama.

The tension largely stems from Trump’s dogged pursuit of the so-called birther theory. He regularly and publicly questioned where Obama was born and whether he was a legitimate U.S. citizen.

Trump’s questioning started around 2011 and ultimately led Obama to release the long-form version of his Hawaiian birth certificate. That then launched a string of appearances where Obama took the opportunity to insult Trump.

Such a misuse of the word “theory”.

But the key thing about the ABC article is how willingly the are to credit Trump for the release of the long form. Now the President shouldn’t have had to do it anyway, but in the birther nonsense Trump was riding the train of other nutcases, and as he always does, claims credit to get the spotlight.

My wife made a wonderful observation today that Trump is about to hit a wall of reality the like of which a pampered spoiled rich old child-boy has never had to face before and she’d be surprised if his heart lasted until January 20th.

I’m surprised his heart has lasted this long. After seeing him in that rally in Lynden (first time I really paid attention) I felt like he could drop any minute. I spotted it with John Ritter, so I guess I’ve got an eye for it.

I’ve been thinking this since Tuesday night. We know he’s not prepared at all for the job and why would he be? He never wanted the job, he wanted a big FU to those he felt had slighted him. He sure never expected to actually win and have to actually, yanno, work. Maybe even read.

Revisionism creeping in, courtesy of ABC… first the headline:

President Obama’s Long History of Insulting Donald Trump

Nasty Obama.

And the words, good dog, the words:

Trump’s “dogged pursuit” and “questioning” and Obama “insulting.”

Because Trump never fucking insulted our President, did he? And usually, I thought Obama usually made jokes about Trump, rather than insulting him.

But what do I know? (Actually, I know a lot, and ABC and all of the other media sycophant assholes can get fucked.)

I’m not sure it’s slut shaming. I mean, Democrats aren’t actually against modeling or porn (usually). That’s the realm of the people that voted for a a playboy contributing sexual assaulter alleged pedophile serial cheater multiple divorced racist cheapskate liar who is married to what used to be an illegal immigrant.

I’m not defending those who do slut shame, but pointing out the glaring hypocrisy(and fucking racism) of those who call Melania elegant while I had a trump supporter put fucking pictures on my facebook page pointing to Michelle Obama’s penis.

Sorry, going back to Battleborn. FFXV cannot get here soon enough.

I get the hypocrisy angle. That certainly applies to the voters you describe. It doesn’t AFAIK apply to Melania whose pictures were used within a context of what appeared to me as pretty clear shaming intent.

Not a surprise that Villarigosa is throwing his hat in the ring. John Chaing, the state Treasurer, and Lt Governor Gavin Newsom (the former mayor of San Francisco who set off the gay marriage revolution) are already in. So far, no prominent Republicans has jumped in. The GOP’s best chance, Kevin’s Faulconer (mayor of San Diego) has declined to run. That’s is going to be an interesting race - but don’t expect the winner to run for president in 2020 - Reagan and Brown both learned the hard way that sitting California governors have a hard time campaigning out of state

What Trump and the Republicans will clearly try to do is to rewrite history and reality to conform to their ideology. The Bushies did that too, and were probably better at it than Trump and company are likely to be. Trump seems to be too undisciplined to be a good propagandist.

E.g., A POTUS-elect Gingrich would never have said anything positive about President Obama.

It’s not even that. If the standards aren’t all set based on where the insured lives than nothing really changes because the out of state insurer still hasn’t to meet the local rules for where the insured lives. If Iran based on where the insurer is based, then it turns into something like a race to the bottom where all the insurers will set up shop in whichever state has the best legal framework for the insurer and everyone gets screwed

Leonard Cohen was from a whole other side of the Montreal tracks from my grandparents (as was Christopher Plummer, who I bent the elbow with once and was a great guy), but the man was a very good poet, and passable singer, and he wrote a famous song about the sister of someone I went to high school with.

In living in central Europe for a sizable percentage of my life, I discovered that people in that region today have no grasp whatsoever on who is and isn’t Jewish.

More than 20 years ago I had a young student in the Czech Republic who mentioned she was a big fan of Leonard Cohen. I replied that he and I were likely related on some level as I am a Jew with some ties to Canada as well.

Her eyes got wide and she exclaimed:

“You mean Leonard Cohen is JEWISH?!?!?!?”

She couldn’t understand why I found that so hilarious.

According to the Secretary of State’s website 100% of precincts have reported and 9 million votes counted. To say another 4.6 million ballots haven’t been counted means a full 1/3 are still out. That makes no sense

The CA SOS website said the exact same thing during the Primaries, but late mail in votes and provisional ballots trickled in for weeks and Bernie closed the margin considerably during that time because the late vote broke heavily his way. For reasons I don’t really understand there’s not much staff dedicated to counting these lingering votes quickly.

For mail-in ballots, they individually compare signatures on the envelopes to signatures on file, which is a tedious process.

Cillizza’s attempt at being a pedantic ass doesn’t get off the ground because he didn’t even bother to whine about Trump’s voters being called racist.

Instead, he whines about the votes themselves being regarded as racist. Every single one of Trump’s votes was a racist act. That is because Trump ran an intensely racist and bigoted campaign.

Anyone who thought the Republicans wouldn’t enact this at their first opportunity (giving the side-eye to lefty non-voters and 3rd party voters here) deserves every bit of the personal grief they’ll experience as a result.

I’m eagerly awaiting the outraged squeals from the Trump-tards when Obamacare gets repealed and they suddenly find out they can’t get insurance due to a pre-existing condition.

Trump voters are in for a very rude awakening about what the Republican party really believes.

Right, also according to this statement by the SOS the deadline for mail in ballots to be received is November 14th, and they must have been postmarked on or before Election Day. Add another two weeks or so for this slow ass manual processing and Clinton’s popular vote may keep climbing all the way into the first week of December.

I hope it’s just him.

I can live without becoming the new mayor in December: I get it, I am the only Democrat on the village board. That’s how politics rolls, and I knew that going in when I went on the board several years ago.

But if my neighbours all think I should be deported because I am a liberal or my skin isn’t quite the colour of a “whites-only” sign, I’m in real trouble here.

Thank you - that short sentence shows deep kindness.

I really hope that this is an aberration in my town. Until now, I thought I was, if not well-liked, at least tolerated by everyone here. (They did elect me twice.)

I hope that his despite is only temporary, and he’ll remember the friendly lefty socialist he’s been living next to for five years and not the caricature that Mr. Trump and his allies have been promoting.

Only a couple months ago, I paid him to remove the wire fence around my yard. (Long story, but it was in violation of zoning ordinances when we bought our house.) He said he would do it for free, but I insisted on paying him (it took him half a day).

I am legitimately scared for my wife’s and my own safety.

Indeed.
For me tonight’s freakout is over the possibility that they go through with privatizing medicare and repealing Obamacare, neither of which will affect me (as long as my current job lasts + six months, I will have good medical insurance, and I’m fifteen years away from Medicare.)
A normal party would be afraid of hurting too many of their voters. This party seems to have so many heartless assholes in it that they will just go ahead and do it, although I do think their survival instinct might keep them from fucking with SS.
Excuse me for a minute, I am going to go pack a bowl and then take my lovely dogs for a walk. I am pretty sure that between them they have more compassion than all of the current GOP.

The GOP has learned, and had confirmed with this election, that they can do whatever they want and simply lie, cover, and blame others for anything negative that is noticed.

I think the midterms might be decent for us. If we are very good about this, we could hold on to most of our Senate seats, and maybe pick up Arizona and Nevada. We won’t get the Senate.
