Overdue

It should have happened before the election.

But tonight, Twitter has suspended a whole bunch of racist and white supremacist accounts, including Richard Spencer, Radix Journal, the National Policy Institute, and several other less well-known but just as ugly accounts.

Here’s the list so far:

@PaulTown_
@JohnRiversToo

Twitter isn’t doing this because it’s right. They are doing this to make their site more appealing so they can finally sell it and move on.

7

Thing is, as we’re watching in pretty much real time, it doesn’t matter because these people are leaving Twitter and moving into the White House.

I don’t think that they CAN sell it now, or at least for a price that isn’t at fire-sale levels.

In a normal transition to a normal administration, there’s always disorder. There are the presidential friends and second cousins, the flacks and the hangers-on who flame out in the first year or two. There are the bad choices — the abusive bosses, the angry ideologues and the sheer dullards. You accept the good with the bad and know that there will be stupid stuff going on, particularly at the beginning. Things shake out. Even if you are just blocking errors, it is a contribution.

This time may be different. Trump was not a normal candidate, the transition is not a normal transition, and this will probably not be a normal administration. The president-elect is surrounding himself with mediocrities whose chief qualification seems to be unquestioning loyalty. He gets credit for becoming a statesman when he says something any newly elected president might say (“I very much look forward to dealing with the president in the future”) — and then reverts to tweeting against demonstrators and the New York Times. By all accounts, his ignorance, and that of his entourage, about the executive branch is fathomless. It’s not even clear that he accepts that he should live in the White House rather than in his gilt-smeared penthouse in New York.

To add, I made this comment in ResidentAdvisor, a popular dance music site for underground house and techno, about his resignation:

Well, he is endorsing a man that brags about sexual assault and dismisses it as “locker room talk”. When nightclubs continue to see rising problems with sexual harassment and making life Hell for women patrons, this is a dangerous sign and sets a horrible precedent.

Can’t stress this enough. I hate seeing female patrons get sexually harassed on the dancefloor. Can’t women have fun without being creeped on???

Infrastructure Means Jobs!

Draining the Swamp:
Beginning in 1930, the bonifica idraulica cleared the scrub forest,[note 3] constructed a total of 16,500 km (10,300 mi) of checkerboard canals and trenches, dredged rivers, diked their banks, filled depressions, and constructed pumping stations to change the elevation in the canals where necessary. The final channel, the Mussolini Canal, empties into the Tyrrhenian Sea near Anzio. The project reached a peak in 1933 with 124,000 men employed. The previous agrarian population was moved out under protest in the name of progress. Workers were interned in camps surrounded by barbed wire. The camps were overcrowded, wages were low, hours were long, food was bad, sanitation was poor, healthcare was missing, and medical attention was lacking. However, workers could quit, and the turnover was high. In 1935, at the completion of the phase, they were all dismissed without notice. Many were infected with malaria.

Um, no, not any more…New Balance makes most of their line overseas, just like everyone else.

In 1994, New Balance manufactured 70 percent of its shoes in the United States.[11] In 2006, New Balance stated on its customer help site that “approximately 25% of the New Balance shoes sold in North America are Made in the USA and we will continue domestic manufacturing.”[12] According to Fortune in 2006, “About 70 percent of its shoes are now made in China and the other 5 percent in Vietnam.”[13]

That’s great. People have become so much more accepting of Asperger’s than when I was a kid. We know more about it now so that helps too. I think that’s why I don’t like it when people complain about kids these days. I mean there are still bullies obviously but I think kids are more tolerant of kids who are different now.

His personal grudge with Christie who I obviously have no love for either could cost Trump at least some marginally competent people in defense and national security. As far as cabinet possibilities? My least favorite is Jefferson Beauregard Sessions the third with his history of bigotry and his alleged stupid joke that he was okay with the KKK until he found out some of them smoked weed. My dad really really hates Rudy Giuliani which amuses me because I never knew he felt that way about him. Speaking of that, some of you from New York have told me that there are a lot of things that debunk the idea that Giuliani’s policies were responsible for NYC’s drop in crime in the 90’s. Wouldn’t mind some links. I pointed out that some of the things the Giuliani mayor’s office did were blatantly unconstiutional but the kind of people that we’re trying to get this message to don’t care about that but maybe if I can find some studies that show the drop actually began in the Dinkins mayorship or independent of Rudy’s mayorship.

I hear ya but making Bannon a name and face to match the Trump administration could do some good. I doubt it’ll force him out but maybe it will help make Breitbart stained. Do to Breitbart what the right’s been doing to groups like ACORN and Planned Parenthood except being honest about it.

Started reading the new Jodi Picoult book to distract myself from the shitshow (of course I choose a book that “is about racism, choice, fear, and hope. The novel is based on the true story of a labor and delivery nurse who was prohibited from caring for a newborn because the father requested that no African-American nurses tend to his baby. “)

One description about the book:

There are two points in life when we are all equal : At the moment of birth And at the moment of death. It is how we live between that defines us.

The intro quote (attributed to Ben Franklin, but there is some question about that) is:

Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are

Seems like a good book to read right about now, so with that I’m off to bed to read.

That’s very gracious of the victim. I have Asperger’s myself. I am glad it wasn’t politically related. And I hope that people show this young man some compassion in light of this event. No, it’s not something I would have done but as Ziggy and other Lizards who either are on the spectrum or have someone they love on the spectrum, it effects us all differently.

I’ve been overcoming Asperger’s since I was a small child. It’s something that I try to minimize as much as possible only per my own wishes, but that’s how I was raised… to never let it pigeonhole me.

Trump shuffles transition team, eyes loyalists for Cabinet

President-elect Donald Trump shuffled his transition team again on Tuesday, jettisoning a national security expert and lobbyists from his inner circle as he closed in on naming two loyal Wall Street backers to key economic positions.

[…]

“Very organized process taking place as I decide on Cabinet and many other positions,” Trump said on Twitter after taking his family to dinner at 21 Club, a Manhattan restaurant, his motorcade slipping away from reporters gathered at his apartment building.

“I am the only one who knows who the finalists are!” Trump said.

An Enginseer is a Tech-priest of the Adeptus Mechanicus whose specialization is the maintenance and repair of the many technological instruments of the Imperium of Man, both in peace as in war. Enginseers are the most commonly seen members of the Mechanicus, for they are present wherever a somewhat technologically advanced human settlement reside. By virtue of the ancient Treaty of Mars, many Enginseers are attached to the Imperial Guard and Imperial Navy, maintaining and repairing the Imperium’s vehicles, aircraft, starships, and other wargear and ensuring that the warriors who prosecute the Emperor’s wars always have the means to do so.

Here are real numbers: If it gets really, really, unmistakeably bad , internally or externally, it would only take the decisions of 4 Republican Senators or 20 Republican Congressmen to shut that crap down.

Nah. Locum is the Stockholm County Council Real Estate Holding and Premises management company. The County Council has been conservative-led since ‘06,
and does not have the best of bottom lines, yet the conservative-led centre-right alliance has for the longest time resisted increasing taxes even the slightest fraction.

They have an ongoing scandal with a company called OneMed which was supposed to make consumables for the health care sector cheaper, but sold support stockings for 5,000 SEK ($550-ish) per pair to the council. The contract was of course terminated, but not before OneMed managed to secure a clause which prevented the County Council to speak negatively of the company.

And OneMed got caught trying to get the identities of the journalists which broke the story about the less than honest business practices of OneMed, which the County council had to refuse because of the source protection law here (basically, if they had, the person letting OneMed have the info would go to jail).

The OneMed deal was made during Filippa Reinfeldt’s reign in the Council. Yes, ex-Mrs of the former Swedish PM… She now works for Aleris, a (primarily) geriatric care provider. And this publicity fail appears to have been made back during her reign, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the council either got what they bought (cheapest PR possible) or got caught in another less than honorable business deal.

Investigations into the other contracts made during Reinfeldt’s reign are ongoing.

Yep, righties do this kinda shit this side of the pond too…

Reading about him in Kershaw’s bio, I was struck by two things.
One, that he peopled his ministries with members of his Old Guard as a reward.
Two, that because they all owed their loyalty to him, and because the bureaucracy had become so compromised with these yes-man transplants, departments began to overlap and personal frictions developed.
If anything, the Third Reich was a deviation from the idea of German efficiency.
Add to this the suggestions that Trump seems most swayed by the last person with whom he has spoken and undoubtedly a tendency to approve of a ‘law of the jungle’ type dynamic within his spheres of control (The Apprentice, need I say more?) and I think that gross inefficiency is a given at this point.

In light of Donald Trump’s election, the neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement has announced that it will replace the swastika with the Odal rune on flags and uniforms.

America’s white supremacists ban swastika in bold attempt to ‘go mainstream’

“We are not racist, and I do not like that term,” Jeff Schoep tells news.com.au.
The commander of the National Socialist Movement — described as the party “for every patriotic white American” — has a brand new reason to protest the point.
His party is about to do something it has never done. It is making a run at the mainstream, and it is even banning the swastika. Gone. Banished from uniforms that haven’t changed since the 1960s, well before the commander joined the ranks as a 19-year-old.
In a statement on the NSM website earlier this month, Mr Schoep called it a “slight re-branding”.
“Your party platform remains the same, your party remains unchanged, it is a cosmetic overhaul only,” he wrote.

Almost all of that is a response to law and regulation honestly designed to keep human beings from ripping off the lucrative system and fulfill the intent of Congress.

See, here’s the thing, there certainly are cases where regulation, while well-intended, is overwhelming and often counterproductive (government acquisitions in general or the GMO crop regulations mentioned earlier, which have the effect of locking out everyone who doesn’t know how or doesn’t have the resources to navigate the system). If Republicans were interested in addressing that, I’d be sympathetic. But rolling back river pollution controls? Not on board with that at all.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

So, Trump tweets that the media reports about seeking clearances for his kids was wrong, and that his transition team is functioning smoothly.

Really? That’s why you’ve gone through Christie and Pence and who else to run the transition team in just the past week? That’s smooth?

You’ve got an inner circle of sycophants who want to gouge out everyone else’s eyes to get ahead, and you think all this is hunky dory, and this is how it’s done - let alone how it’s done professionally.

There’s a reason that professional natsec people are horrified at what they’re seeing and hearing. This is the opposite of professionalism. Trump is anything but knowledgeable and serious about any of this. And it will cost people lives - and we’re not even into the domestic policy stuff yet.

Trump owes Deutschbank $650 million; Deutschbank owes the DoJ $14 billion in mortgage/bond fraud penalties. The bank is trying to renegotiate their fines and have them reduced, does Trump have a conflict of interest?

Trump owes the Bank of China (state-owned) $950 million, and he’s threatening to have the US file charges against China accusing them of currency manipulation. Does he have a conflict of interest?

We don’t know how many other conflicts he may have because we haven’t seen his taxes.

Then a whole discussion of what a “blind trust” is, and why his kids running his business isn’t the least bit “blind.”

I have a nerf specifically for throwing at the TV in these circumstances. Newsweek published an Eichenwald story about this very thing (a much longer story, with dozens of examples) about a month ago. From the rest of the media, crickets. NOW they want to talk about it?!?!?

I was still groggy and tried to listen, but damn that first 15 or minutes was just a jumbled mess. Which by the way is not unusual in itself, but this was chaos uncontrolled!

I think they were ragging on Rudy G and his getting paid for speaking to rogue countries for big bucks, compared that to Clinton, and then put it into context with Trump choosing a cabinet, etc. But I am not sure. I also couldn’t figure out if they were making it all a joke or were serious. Were they being critical of Trump or saying this is politics as usual because there are always screw ups when choosing a new government?

Can I get an interpretation? Anyone watch past the first half hour that can put that crap into some kind of logical conclusion?

I asked that question yesterday - what if this chaos is the actual plan?

You got Bannon, who’s on the record as saying he wants to tear it all down, and Flynn who’s pretty much in Putin’s pocket - and who knows who else is on Moscow’s payroll at this point?

I’m getting more convinced that the want this chaos. Probably to deflect away from something else, but I have no idea what that could be..

Surprisingly, not exactly.

Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

War is pretty obviously out, since we’re currently talking just fucking shit up. Does he adhere to our enemies? Maybe, maybe not. If he’s just fucking shit up, with no loyalty to anything or anyone, maybe not treason, if he’s doing it to help an enemy plan, then probably.

Doing some research on Trade Deficits and came across this UpShot article. Good reading:

nytimes.com

Great section here on the Triffin dilemma:

Wouldn’t it be better if the U.S. didn’t run a deficit?

It’s not clear that that’s even an option, because the dollar isn’t used just in trade between the United States and other countries.

The dollar is a global reserve currency, meaning that it is used around the world in transactions that have nothing to do with the United States. When a Malaysian company does business with a German company, in many cases it will do business in dollars; when wealthy people in Dubai or Singapore’s government investment fund want to sock away money, they do so in large part in dollar assets.

That creates upward pressure on the dollar for reasons unrelated to trade flows between the United States and its partners. That, in turn, makes the dollar stronger, and American exporters less competitive, than they would be in a world where nobody used the dollar for anything except commerce involving the United States.

The roughly $500 billion trade deficit that the United States runs each year isn’t just about poorly negotiated trade deals and currency manipulation by this or that country. It’s also, to some degree, a byproduct of the central role the United States plays in the global financial system.

There’s even a name for this: the Triffin dilemma. In the mid-20th century, the economist Robert Triffin warned that the provider of the global reserve currency would need to run perpetual trade deficits to keep the world financial system from freezing, with those trade deficits potentially fueling domestic booms and busts.

The key idea is that if a President Trump or any other future leader really wants to reduce our trade deficits in a major way, that leader is going to have to rethink the very underpinnings of global finance.

I suspect some people think/hope that if they accumulate enough money, power and material objects it’ll somehow make them immortal. It won’t—that’s one of the reasons Muslims perforrn Hajj wearing the Ihram, the white cloth you always see. It signifies the equality of all mankind and serves as a reminder of one’s mortality (we are also buried in a plain, simple shroud, typically of white cotton). BTW, additionally, there is no segregation of the sexes during Hajj.

Obama is leaving Drump a very health economy and the likelihood for these barometers to hold steady is low. Economic dips are cyclic on 7 to 10 year cycles. We are due for another one and we’ll be able to point and laugh at Drump and the deplorables.

There are some ethnic and religious issues in Iran though.

Kurdish separatism, Arab resentment in Khuzestan, neglect of Iranian Balochs in Sistan-Balochistan, Azeri nationalism, and Sunni extremism from a minority of Salafis that have managed to infiltrate Iran. Not everyone shares Iranian nationalism when they have their own cause to support.

But with one caveat: it’s not entirely coming from Sistan-Baluchistan, but from places like Kermanshah where Kurdish Sunnis live. There was an NPR article early this year that talked about how catastrophic a Da’esh suicide attack in Tehran would be for the Sunnis. And another article I linked a month ago talking about that. And they are very afraid.

To cut it in laymen’s terms, it will be worse than Iraq.

From Balloon Juice here and here.

Okay now that we are starting to collect stories, we also need to start finding out what will happen to Medicare. That means calling Congress.

When you call Congress, you need to call your Representative and your Senators. Those are the only people who may or may not take action on your call. Everyone else will at best forward your message to your Rep or Senator. Right now we do not need to do advocacy, we need to do an intelligence appreication of where people stand on Paul Ryan’s “A Better Way” for Medicare.

So when you call your Congressional office, let’s ask a very simple question that we should be able to get a yes or no:

“Does Congressman Doe support Paul Ryan’s “A Better Way” plans for Medicare?”

I’ve already called my reps last week but I’m going to call again and ask if they have a defense plan.

Greek protesters riot during Obama’s visit

ATHENS (Reuters) - Riot police fired teargas on Tuesday at protesters demonstrating just a few kilometers (miles) from the presidential mansion where Greek leaders were hosting a state banquet for visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.

About 7,000 people, among them many hooded protesters and members of the Communist-affiliated group PAME, marched through the streets of central Athens holding banners reading “Unwanted!”

The police clashed with the protesters after they tried to break through cordon lines to reach the parliament building and the U.S. embassy. Some demonstrators threw two petrol bombs at police before dispersing into nearby streets close to Athens’s main Syntagma Square.

In a separate protest in the northern city of Thessaloniki, protesters burned a U.S. flag.

The visit comes only two days before the anniversary of a bloody 1973 student revolt that helped topple the 1967-1974 military junta which was backed by the U.S. government.

Obama, who will be succeeded in January by Donald Trump, arrived in Greece on Tuesday on his last foreign tour as president of the United States.

I hate to say this, because it will likely trigger something of a constitutional crisis, but I would not be surprised to see Section 4 of the Twenty-fifth Amendment invoked at some point during Trump’s presidency. And not because he became sick and unable to carry out the duties of the office. And if/when it happens, I fully expect Trump to fight over it.

(For those who don’t know, Section 4 of the 25th Amendment allows the Vice-President and a majority of the cabinet to temporarily remove the president by sending a letter to the Speaker and President Pro Tempore of the Senate stating that the president is unable to carry out the duties of the office. Once the letter is sent, the VPOTUS becomes Acting President. It’s likely meant for incidents where the president has a heart attack or stroke, or is comatose. But there’s nothing in the language of the Amendment that limits it to such circumstances)

I guess it’s good that they’ve got as many leaks as they’re showing, because it’s a good practical insight into how this administration will run things.

It’s going to run things like a business. A poorly run business that will extract every last penny at shareholder and creditor expense (aka the taxpayers) and the CEO and board will make out like bandits (the Trump cabal).

my guess is that it will involve a lot of yelling.

And a lot of ranting about Citizens United and the plight of the poor white working class and the anger of Trump voters that Bernie totally understands.

Why is the loser of a partisan primary now the go-to arbiter of all things. STFU, Bernie.

Why is it that when I read that comment, what passes through my brain:

Are we going to be a diverse party or a party of angry white men?

And then I can only think, there’s already a party of angry white men.

We also cannot be a party without angry white men. Can you tell I’ve been angry?

The why is because he’s still in office, and still willing to get in front of a camera.

As much as I would like Obama to have a quiet retirement, which is as much as I would like to just be able to do programming and not worry about all this shit, I hope Obama is willing to get in front of a camera every time he leaves his house.

Trump may be well aware of this, since otherwise incompetent cretins are almost never incompetent about direct threats to their power. Pence will backstab Trump at the first available chance, and it looks like Trump’s counter-move is to fill the cabinet with a bunch of bozos that know they will be gone 5 minutes after Trump is deposed.

I think picking Pence was Trump’s first counter-move.

How so? Pence is the biggest threat to Trump because the GOP could easily align with Pence vs. Trump.

Yeah, I wasn’t thinking strategically from the RNC point of view. I was only thinking how odious I find Pence.

Trump will probably appoint too many of his own toadies and people just as insane as he is for that to happen. This is why we’re seeing such an immediate emphasis placed by the transition team on perceived loyalty. It’s why Kushner has been able to purge the team of anyone associated with Christie, why they were open about having an enemies list and refuse to hire talented Republicans who didn’t march in exact lockstep with Trump through every scandal of his general election campaign. They’re paranoid as fuck and are surrounding Trump with people at least as batshit crazy as he is so that the entire team has bought into his Death Eater mentality. You’ll effectively be looking at an apocalyptic cult, not a traditional Administration. It’s more likely that his cabinet will be the ones who push him towards committing some horrifying atrocity. In the aftermath of such an event Pence and/or any who object would be quickly swept aside in a putsch.

Talk about cutting your nose to spite your face.

That bit about not selling planes to Iran should be made into a little brochure and passed out to every freaking union and all its members in this country with the message attached; this is why unions back Democratic candidates and favor Democratic politics and policies.
