A Gorgeous Song by Michelle Willis: “It’ll Rain Today”

Michelle Willis is one of the great artists working with Snarky Puppy’s GroundUP Music, and this is a really gorgeous song that builds to a transcendent climax. Amazing stuff. A message that really connected with me as I fight through a sense of deep depression over this election.

So, in an earlier thread, I posted the comment “The President’s name IS Schicklgruber” knowing that there are a few Firesign Theatre fans here. Now I’m listening to it, and you should too.

Trump won’t speak out against the racism and bigotry that have flared up in the wake of his election, but I’m supposed to buy the bullshit I keep hearing about how the racism and bigotry he displayed on the campaign trail were all an act and he doesn’t really believe any of it.

And the really important thing is, it was NOT THE CAST that booed, it was members of the audience…people who actually paid for tickets to attend.

As we saw again and again during the campaign, Trump and Pence were great at causing public uproars that would always take enough attention away from serious ethical or moral outrages towards Trump until the next one flared up.

So we can expect this for four years straight because Trump has many more outrages to go. He’s not even the President yet and look at the brouhaha.

I do have to agree with my mom that about the only way any of this shit is going to get fixed is for us to suffer through a Republican president and have it blow up in everyone’s face. We both agreed that it’ll hurt a lot of people who knew to keep him out of office, but all of the other people need to be jarred to their senses. It’s just going to really hurt.

I will admit that I clearly misjudged how much the 25 year whisper campaign doomed her chance. I figured people would want the competent one in office. Oh, well. But Republicans may have well just built on her win as just more ways to convince people that Democrats are the ones hurting them.

82
Backwoods_Sleuth  Nov 19, 2016 • 7:14:13pm

oh….

In the nine days since Donald Trump won the presidential election reports have surfaced that he considered seeking top secret clearances for his three oldest children, and in some instances their spouses - requests that would be unprecedented if true. Trump also seems to be standing by a plan to place his children in charge of the Trump Organization’s “blind trust,” an arrangement that could be riddled with potential conflicts of interest.

The relationship is also cause for concern given previous disclosures that appear to show Trump using government contracts to enrich his children.

Documents won three months ago in response to a FOIA appeal show that during Donald Trump’s re-development of the taxpayer-owned Old Post Office building in downtown D.C. into a luxury hotel, Trump “funneled money to his children through separate companies bearing each of the children’s names, and the document indicates that those companies did not invest money. Nevertheless, their stakes could earn the children a big chunk of any profits generated from the taxpayer-owned site.” BuzzFeed further noted when the story was originally reported in August that despite the fact the building is owned by the public, many of the key documents in the deal were heavily redacted, forcing BuzzFeed to file an appeal.

re: #81 Belafon

I don’t really buy this argument when Bros make it to me so I can’t really buy it here. We were assured that Dubya wasn’t going to make it past a single term, that he was gonna be such a fuck-up that voters would realize their mistake and reject him after a single term. Then 9/11 happened, Iraq happened, and suddenly Democrats were viewed as unpatriotic assholes for not supporting the “war time president.” Without the Great Recession, it’s possible that McCain might have been able to fool enough voters into believing that the Iraq War was too important to be left up to a junior senator with no military experience.

So yeah, I can’t buy this argument. Why? Because I can’t say with any level of certainty that there won’t be another major terrorist attack or major event that won’t turn Trump from the most corrupt asshole to ever inherit the White House into the second-coming of St. Ron.

The biggest reason I buy the argument is this: So many people are going to keep voting for Republicans until their Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are fucked with. And we’re not talking about poor people, we talking about those middle class people that have done very little planning, and don’t really have the means to plan, for retiring without counting on those services.

As we’ve seen in several red states, Republicans have openly run on gutting services like Kynect that were wildly popular and won. The power of self-delusion is such that Republicans now can start dancing on the third rail and not get zapped.

The normalization of this all is horrifying. That really is what I find myself fighting back most against. Normal presidents do not consider people like Steve Bannon ideal WH staff nor do they consider someone like Michael Flynn a good idea for National Security adviser. Pretty much everyone Trump has chosen so far for jobs have been people who have kissed his ass nonstop. Pretty ironic since the right liked to claim that Obama’s cabinet and advisers were yes men and women.

Not sure what to think of this part of a NY Times article about Iraqis’ views of Trump:

Surprisingly, some Iraqis seemed less offended by Mr. Trump’s comments linking terrorism to Islam than American liberals.

Iraqis have endured years of Islam being used to justify mass killing, and some see Mr. Trump as a truth-teller in calling out Islam — or a certain brand of it — as the problem.

Iraqi Shiites say they believe Mr. Trump will take a harder line on Saudi Arabia, the Sunni power that many see as the incubator of the extreme form of Islam, Wahhabism, that forms a basis of the Islamic State’s ideology.

“The victory of Trump is the beginning of the end of extremist Islam and Wahhabism,” said Mouwafak al-Rubaie, an Iraqi lawmaker and the country’s former national security adviser.

In Mr. Trump’s vow to defeat terrorism many Iraqis say they have hope that decisive American power will be marshaled to eradicate the Islamic State, the extremist group also known as ISIS, which has brutalized parts of Iraq, Syria and Libya and plotted attacks on the West.

And that reminds me, whatever happened to that “IraqTheModel” blog that was the darling of neocons a decade ago?

Oooh, now that he’s won re-election, Make Believe Maverick, Johnny McCain sure is talkin’ tough: “I don’t give a damn what the president of the United States wants to do. We will not waterboard.”

Remember—McCain supported Trump through his insults to POWs, specifically to McCain himself, through Trump’s trash-talking the judge and the Khan family, through all the months Trump talked about how great waterboarding would be—he only withdrew his support during the pussy-grabbing tape (and probably when his internals showed he could win without Trump’s support.)

What in the name of sweet baby fuck?

The very unique traits that have made him a billionaire and now President of the United States are as Jewish as you can get!

Let me prove to you that Donald is our first Jewish president…

Almost seven years ago I brought two of my friends to Aspen to see Umphrey’s McGee in a bar called Belly Up (the other one, the original Belly Up, is in Solana Beach, CA). We each paid $25 to get in. They played for over two and a half hours during two sets. And we all got our money’s worth. It was a pretty fun set list.

Because this news item appears to have been somewhat relegated to second-rate status by the mainstream newsmedia in the US, I;d like to say a word here to celebrate the brave Peggy Whitson, US astronaut, the oldest woman in space (56, by one year) who arrived at the Intl Space station about 10 hours ago as I type this.

The French media here have covered this rather extensively because of the presence of a French astronaut, Thomas Pasquet, as part of the mission.

The point was made that only the Russians have now the means to send people into space. I don’t expect this to change under trump unless SpaceX kicks into high gear.

Mr. Obama was a great policy maker, but not a great party builder. In the face of Republican intransigence, he still managed to get things done. But the strategies that made him successful — passing legislation by the narrowest partisan majority, refraining from boasting about what his reforms accomplished and, in the end, falling back on executive orders — are exactly what make his legacy so vulnerable.

Congressional Democrats frequently complained that the president’s approach put them at risk. Seeking to expand government with a hidden hand, his policies were designed in such a way that made it hard for Democrats to claim credit for them. In public, he played down the scale of policies like the stimulus package so that they would not attract too much attention, or criticism. Whereas President Franklin D. Roosevelt made it clear that every public works project was a product of the New Deal, Americans usually had no idea what programs came from Mr. Obama’s stimulus.

In other words, while I thought a workhorse is what we need in a president, we need a salesman as well. Now, some of this is on the press, but I do know that, in the stimulus at the beginning of his presidency, he chose to downplay the tax credits early on because there was evidence that a lot of people tend to look at those as short term things and won’t adjust their spending habits because of it.

In the simplest terms, Republican turnout seems to have surged this year, while Democratic turnout stagnated. The Republican surge is easiest to see in those same heartland states that flipped the election.

Douglas Rivers, the chief scientist at YouGov, a research firm, has done an analysis focused on the returns in six states — five that switched from Obama to Trump, and Minnesota, which Trump barely lost. In these states, turnout rose more in conservative areas than in liberal ones. That pattern, obviously, cannot be explained by vote-switching among the white working class.

This is how you undermine the military command structure in banana republic.

This comes from an article in the Washington Post, referring to the heads of intelligence agencies and the Pentagon asking President Obama to remove Admiral Michael Rogers as the director of the NSA. (It would appear that the NSA has not been run well under Adm. Rogers, so since Mr. Trump is asking for him as Director of National Intelligence - DNI is in charge of all the intelligence agencies, the GOP is all in on why Adm. Rogers is a perfect choice.)

washingtonpost.com

It would also appear that Adm. Rogers is rarely at his workplace, while major changes are being instituted at the NSA. This is causing agency morale to drop.

254
Anymouse  Nov 20, 2016 • 7:06:09am

From the Post (emphasis mine):

The news comes as Rogers is being considered by President-elect Donald Trump to be his nominee for director of national intelligence to replace Clapper as the official who oversees all 17 U.S. intelligence agencies. In a move apparently unprecedented for a military officer, Rogers, without notifying superiors, traveled to New York to meet with Trump on Thursday at Trump Tower. That caused consternation at senior levels of the administration, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal personnel matters.

I’m going to have to get my mom’s opinion on Admiral Rogers (she worked for NGA, current DNI Clapper’s agency). She said the Flynn pick was awful for reasons we already know but also noticed his ability to get along with others is awful. Don’t know what Rogers reputation is with that.

Well, going off to New York without notifying anyone in the chain of command as an admiral is not reassuring to this particular retired petty officer that he is entirely trustworthy, but that might just be me.

When I was in the Navy, I expected my chain-of-command to be, well, in command.

They have no control over some appointments, like Bannon, but they should filibuster the crazies.

If that leads to the demise of the filibuster, oh well, it was useless anyway since only the Rs use it.

I think the Dems should be very very quiet about the filibuster till after the rules are in stone. Then use it as a ax against all things Trump.

Not early enough though, as a big set came through and his duck dives were in vain. Got pushed all the way up to about 30 feet from the rocks in front of me before giving up and paddling across the foam to the sandy exit 100 yards from where he is in this shot.

I’m going to be a bit more charitable, but it’s not much. Most people, especially the comfortable ones, only look at politics when it’s time to vote. And they don’t do much research. But so many of them think that FOX is presenting them news, when it’s news with a whole lot of politics mixed in. And when they vote based on the “information” they have, you get Trump.

I think a lot of marginalized groups, such as minorities and the poor, are better in tune with what’s going on in the country, because they are most directly affected by it. It’s the middle and upper middle classes that aren’t, and therefore aren’t paying attention.

It’s that. And also that a lot of people focus very heavily on *local* politics since that is what affects them more day-to-day. Though this means that often they do not find out how a state or nationally set policy affects them until it’s too late. And then the question is whether the next election is actually a reaction to being hit by that policy, or it’s gone past the attention span radar by then.

And for a marginalized group the local politics would be even more important since that is the area where government can make your life a living hell.

Hey, I welcome their involvement in the process and their voting for party primaries, but only so long as they stick around and vote for the party even when their chosen candidate loses. Because the Tea Party doesn’t just pack its shit up and go home when its chosen candidate loses, it supports the nominee with the implied threat that if they don’t dance to the TP tune, they’ll be back in 2-6 years facing another wingnut challenger.

This ForeignPolicy piece should help:

When Sarkozy takes potshots at the promoters of a “happy identity,” he has Juppé in his crosshairs. First coined by Juppé in 2014 in response to Finkielkraut’s book, the phrase has since become his campaign’s unofficial slogan. (When Hollande was asked his opinion, he replied judiciously that France with neither happy nor unhappy — the sort of feckless triangulation that has contributed to his current 4 percent approval rating.) Rather than retreat in the face of Sarkozy’s dig, Juppé has since brandished the phrase with greater energy. Rather than recoiling in the face of religious and ethnic diversity, Juppé instead has declared he seeks to “conciliate” the reality of French society with republican ideals. He has spoken of certain “accommodations” that the state should strike with French Muslims, centered on practical issues like serving halal meals in schools. He has also denounced the “frenzy of intellectuals,” some of whom have proposed that parents be limited to giving their children traditional “French” names like Jacques and Marie. And for all of this levelheadedness, Juppé, according to polls, has been rewarded by the voters-to-be.

They already have an end run around the Fist Amendment: it will not be a religious-based registry in the narrow sense, it will be from all residents, regardless of religion, from “countries associated with terrorism”. Which will, of course, be overwhelmingly Muslim…

I think some Americans should be considered for that countries associated with terrorism list. Snoop on all the militia types, the Bundys, etc. They need to be signed up on a list and then extremely vetted so we can find out what the hell is going on.

Worked then, and the economy expanded- bigly!

Because that massive recession that caused the unemployment of millions, shaved years of gains off the stock market, and the wholesale loss of decades of wealth accumulation for the poorest Americans…well, that just never happened. We don’t wanna talk about that, we wanna act as though a 4.9% UE rate, record stock levels, and years of uninterrupted economic growth are the “worst thing ever.”

I guess CBS got around the difficulty of talking with Trump’s cock in their mouths by tweeting instead.

“Absolutely no baggage” is correct only in the sense that he has no record of public service to refer to.

He only has a record of self-service, of which we know very little because he refuses to release his tax returns and everyone who works for him has to sign a non-disclosure agreement…

Pete Peterson’s Long History of Deficit Scaremongering

The man behind Fix the Debt has spent decades trying to foment panic over a looming economic disaster, with little to show for it.

“… Now Peterson wants to loot Social Security. For decades he has warned of a “Pearl Harbor scenario” in which spending on Social Security and Medicare causes an epic economic meltdown. Fix the Debt is only his latest project pushing the message that the deficit poses a “catastrophic threat,” and the media have been content to echo his warnings.”

They can and will do damage. What kind of damage will depend on the American people. But there are many things where the wrong reaction by the American people, such as a response to a terror attack, will send us down a spiral that will be hard to get out of. Having said that, I think that Trump and Co can be overcome.

That’s because Trump isn’t really an American. That is that his loyalty is and always will be to his class, the 1%. If America burns and his class profits that will be cool with him, and them.

It’s one of the reasons I generally oppose ‘free trade’ agreements. Despite the Orwellian name they are not about free trade. They’re about corporations, and the people that own/run them, from any social or national obligation.

I sure hope Miranda is ready to deal with the RW hornets nest he kicked by taking a stand against Mike Pence.

I’m pretty sure that he doesn’t live in a bubble unlike Pirro and her fellow RWNJs.

WTF indeed. And these are the people who think any interpretation of the 2nd that isn’t guns for all, no regulations is something to freak out about. I know it’s one individual but damn.

re: #467 Dr. Matt

I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. Despite being a Vet and someone tells me I can’t be a true American when I claim Trump is not my president….I’m done. Adios. I had to listen to that shit for 8 years under dubyah. I won’t do it again.

I accept that he is legally elected President and no more.

Which is a lot considering he was a major spokesman for a movement that questioned the very validity of Obama’s presidency…

He did not “take a stand against Mike Pence” he asked, very politely, that VP-Elect govern for “all the people”

I have trouble with that, considering what I consider to be the Hatch Act violations of Comey and some in the FBI with Giuliani. Between that and Hillary’s mounting lead in the popular vote, I have real trouble with that. That’s not counting Wikileaks, and the MSM playing email-gate.
