Breaking: Neo-Nazi Sympathizing “Celebrity” Tila Tequila Suspended From Twitter

Following her now infamous Nazi salute at the white supremacist National Policy Institute conference in Washington DC, former MySpace celebrity Tila Tequila (@AngelTilaLove) has been suspended from Twitter.

Anyone who looked at her Twitter timeline knows how deranged and hateful it was, overflowing with antisemitism and neo-Nazi memes. This move by Twitter was long overdue, and is part of what now seems like a very serious effort to clean up the white supremacists who’ve been poisoning Twitter’s reputation by spewing hatred and harassing decent folks who speak out against them.

Jake Tapper is on vacation from CNN now.

During a segment led by guest host Jim Sciutto about Donald Trump’s transition into the White House and whether the president-elect needs to distance himself from the blatantly racist and Nazi-sympathizing “alt-right,” a chyron appeared at the bottom of the screen characterizing recent hateful comments made by white nationalist Richard Spencer.

The chyron at the bottom of the screen remained on air through the entirety of the interview.

“Alt-right founder questions if Jews are people,” read the banner at the bottom of the screen, a message that stayed on air for a couple minutes as a CNN panel managed to fill airtime talking about whether the president should denounce and distance himself from such groups. (A simple “Of course, Jim. This is a crazy question!” would have sufficed in my book).

Tapper immediately responded to comments on Twitter, saying that he was “furious” and that the chyron was “unacceptable,” as it would imply the worst about the segment.

I’m certain that the various völkisch groups in Germany loved needling the Social Democrats with their furious invective just because its blatant idiocy aroused the ire of the establishment.

The Nazi salutes were not there to consciously help Bannon, neither were they a mere joke. They were a joke with a specific intent: to further erode the right side of the Overton window. There is a difference between when your far-right wackos are Glenn Beck or Alex Jones, and when they are people whose virtue signaling involves sieg-heiling.

Well, I have certainly lost some of my shine for Senator Sanders after his statement about “the Democrats need to drop so-called identity politics.”

Everything about politics is identity politics. If you are a woman and there is a party wanting to take your reproductive rights or restrict your employment or whatnot, you identify with that and vote for the politicians that most closely represent your view.

His “don’t vote with your vagina” particularly incensed me. (I don’t have one of those, but still.) If women were “voting with their vaginas,” then we might have had a VP Sarah Palin, or a VP Carly Fiorina. He doesn’t seem to get there is more to “identity politics” than “the candidate looks like me” or “the candidate is in my social class.”

Rep. Gabbard was one of Senator Sanders’s early supporters. Particularly since Senator Sanders’s own family were victims of the Holocaust, I cannot understand why for a second he is interested in anything Mr. Trump has to say (considering the campaign he ran and the people he surrounds himself with). Richard Spencer would as soon see Senator Sanders shipped off in a cattle car than have anything to say to him.

As for Rep. Gabbard herself, I think she might a bit deluded, that Mr. Trump’s team is actually interested in negotiating, or softening their positions.

Ditto if you get denied housing or otherwise discriminated against. I’m not saying working class whites have it easy but the big difference between what working class whites experience and minorities of all colors, creeds, and orientations experience is huge. When Senator Sanders accuses racial minorities of engaging in identity politics, he ignores that identity politics have been played with these people to deny them their equality and rights in the first place. It really is a shame. If Bernie could get over that, I might actually warm up to him some.

Donald Trump’s chief strategist Steve Bannon contacted Tulsi Gabbard to arrange Monday’s meeting with the president-elect, according to a source close to Bannon.

“He reached out to her, not vice versa,” the source told The Hill on Monday.

Many in the media raised their eyebrows when the news broke that Trump was meeting at Trump Tower Monday morning with Hawaii’s Democratic congresswoman.

But for those who know Bannon best, there was no surprise at all.

Bannon, who hates the entrenched two-party system, has long admired Gabbard. She’s an Iraq War veteran with an independent streak. Bannon, a navy veteran, was drawn to her when she began publicly excoriating the Obama administration over its plan to defeat ISIS.

In the end, while my working class maternal grandparents certainly did have to work hard and make no mistake they did, my grandparents weren’t fleeing their home because of bans on interracial marriage as my grandfather’s famous employee Richard Loving did. My grandfather as a heterosexual man did not have to worry about losing his job to his sexual orientation the way LGBT people do today. And as a U.S born white man, unlike Hispanics of today, he never really had to worry about people accusing him of taking their jobs. Being working class isn’t easy. I won’t say Sanders is wrong on that point and we should be in favor of things like living wages, more affordable college education of some kind, etc but where Sanders is wrong is that the marginized groups are engaging in identity politics. They have been told repeatedly that they are the other. Black men and women, poor and wealthy have experienced harassment by the police. Same thing with LGBT people who don’t have discrimination protections. Sanders needs to get this. If he doesn’t. It will be hard to take him seriously.

My paternal grandparents fled the Nazis from Danzig, and were also working class in Massachusetts (my grandmother a homemaker along with her mother, my grandfather working for Uniroyal).

All my grandparents entered WW2 to fight against the Nazis and fascists; my paternal grandfather did not come home.

My parents were the first to go to college in my family (my mother in clinical psychology and my father in agricultural science). Since they were both in the US Navy, that qualifies in my mind as “working class” as well.

No college for me though. My sister went partly through veterinary school before the money ran out. We also were in the military, which to my mind qualifies as “working class” as well.

And yet, I can understand “identity politics,” as all politics boils down to that. As a male, I vote for candidates who support women’s issues, as I can identify with the women in my family. I vote for candidates that want to improve education, because I can relate to others with children (and the need for an educated populace to compete in the world). I can identify with minority equal rights, because if you can strip the rights from one group (or deny them), then you can strip the rights from any group.

FEC orders the Trump Campaign to correct about $1.3 million in 1,100 FEC filing mistakes, mostly about donors exceeding lawful limits.

The FEC found that the Republican’s presidential campaign accepted donations from some improperly registered groups, but most violations were related to donors exceeding legal contribution limits.

A letter sent by FEC officials demanded the Trump campaign refund any donations from unregistered organizations or amounts that exceeded legal donation limits.

Further on in the article, it is noted that such letters are rather routine. Both Bernie Sanders and Barack Obama received similar letters.

Presumably it would be difficult to figure out if someone gave too much money or if an organisation was not legally constituted to do it (which is why the FEC checks up on this stuff).

The difference here I would imagine is Bernie Sanders and Barack Obama complied with the FEC’s requests; I’m betting Donald Trump won’t.

Well, I don’t know, I don’t play an accountant on television. That said, according to the article, such mistakes are fairly routine in political campaigns.

My guess here is Mr. Trump is either going to blow it off, or the Trump Foundation will handle it for him.

On the Tulsi Gabbard article over at Wonkette there is a discussion about so-called identity politics.

In the past here, I have argued that the issues out here in the blindingly-white High Plains should be considered by the Democrats (not because of blindingly white, but because of the inexorable maths of the Electoral College system).

Nevertheless, in reading all this stuff about identity politics here, there, and everywhere, I realise something. The Democratic Party cannot be all things to all people. I was not arguing about pandering to racists (we can leave that up to the GOP), but beyond a certain point if you support certain groups others will feel left out (unless you can show how they actually benefit).

Heck, one can even argue that billionaires engage in identity politics (that is, for billionaires). Not all billionaires are for slashing taxes (most notably Warren Buffett, we get to keep him in our state), just as not all whites are for suppressing African-Americans (President Obama got a huge slice of the white electorate in both his runs).

This comment over at Wonkette stuck out for me:

I remember once a troll on Wonkette talking about his proud membership in the alt-right, and how the movement wasn’t racist. He said that he didn’t actually believe minorities to be inferior to whites, but that political society needed to function as if they were. This was because minorities’ interests differ from those of whites, and it would make little sense to upend the harmony of the largest group in society simply to rectify injustices wrought on the relative few.

This was a shockingly cynical admission of a quasi-intellectualized racism. That white people are not naturally superior to anyone, but because they are numerically superior, their interests must be paramount. An outrageous betrayal of the very concept of justice, really. However, I see a similarity between that alt-right line of thought and the call for an end to identity politics.

Isn’t it basically saying the same thing? “Yes, yes, we know that minorities have problems that we are belittling, but we need the support of whites, damn it, so we are going to cater to them and ignore everyone else.”

I am not a subscriber to Mother Jones so I can’t tell them what I think of their reporting.

If I were a subscriber, I would be all over them to ditch PC terms like “alt-right” or “white nationalists” in favour of more correct terms like “white supremacists” or “fascists” or “neo-Nazis.” My subscription would depend on accurate reporting.

None of the publications I subscribe to, which are a whole lot more conservative than Mother Jones, uses terms like “alt-right.” Foreign Affairs and The Economist print editions call em as they are. When they use those terms, they are in scare quotes (and defined).

Seriously? We don’t need to cope. Trump and the extremists won. And there’s no excusing the behavior of those who supported Trump despite all the evidence to the contrary.

Trump continues to fall further and further behind in the popular vote. In fact, her margin is growing. 63.7 million votes to Trump’s 62 million.

The margin is slim in a few battleground states too, and the official votes still aren’t in yet but aren’t likely to break for Clinton:

Three thousand votes are all that separate Clinton and Trump in New Hampshire. The margin is about 12,000 in Michigan, 27,000 in Wisconsin, 68,000 in Pennsylvania and 113,000 in Florida — close, but nothing compared to the 537 votes that separated George W. Bush and Al Gore in Florida 16 years ago.

So, far from having a mandate, Trump’s limping into office with no mandate and an extremist agenda. Media outlets are spinning furiously to try and normalize his agenda, which is anything but normal. He’s surrounded himself with extremists, and he’s not even paying heed to the rules (such as even considering generals for positions when they’re prohibited by law from being appointed to civilian oversight positions). He’s got a neo-Nazi in charge of his propaganda/agenda in Bannon, and apologists for his extremism continue to carry his water.

His agenda is about exploiting anger, fear, and ignorance. So it goes without saying that he will push for the things that mean the most to him - tax cuts for the rich that shift burdens on to everyone else (all while claiming this will create jobs - trickle down’s incessant failures will fail once again, especially when he looks at tapping Kansas’ own Brownback for that role).

Trump’s shown a dislike/hate towards the 1A, and if there isn’t adulation, he attacks. We saw this during the campaign, particularly with his statements about trying to change libel/defamation laws to make it easier to sue media outlets - to cow them into covering him more favorably (hagiography seems to be his thing). We see it with Pence and his other top people pushing for disrespecting minority rights - especially minority religious rights and protections.

And it seems that the only part of the constitution he cares even the slightest bit about is the 2A (and oddly enough, gun sales are booming once again, even though there hasn’t been any gun confiscation by any elected officials of legally owned guns anywhere in the US). All those claims about Clinton coming to grab the guns was BS - along with all the other BS thrown at her.

That brings me back to Trump’s claims that he wouldn’t prosecute Clinton.
1) it’s not up to him. It’s up to the DOJ to decide (and Congress could take things up as well);
2) he’s already breaking a promise to prosecute/imprison Clinton.

All of which is to say that you can’t trust Trump on anything he says or does, and that you have to be wary of everything his cabal of cronies says and does.

If you compare videos of Mr. Trump from the Eighties or Nineties with his campaign speeches and interviews this year, there is a significant difference.

In the past he was more focused, spoke more clearly, &c. I don’t know how much of it was simply the grind of a long presidential campaign, ageing, or what. But he is definitely different today than he was some twenty or thirty years ago.

One shouldn’t diagnose from TV but I do think I saw signs of early dementia of some kind. I went through that with my mom. His Presidency will make Reagan-II look like Hari Seldon’s Foundation.

People who have observed him over the years have noted Trump as a younger man was more cogent in his speech — just as much a blowhard as now, but able to speak in coherent paragraphs rather than disjointed and repetitious sentences. That creepy following of Hillary on stage may be another sign of mental decline, or his creepy personality. I suspect he wants to avoid press conferences because he can’t handle all the commotion — camera flashes, video floodlights, reporters shouting questions. He wants things set up so he has control on his own turf.

He may take the prize as the absolute worst US president in history on a variety of measures.

I’m minded of my local newspaper publisher sending an E-mail to everyone who had registered an E-mail with the paper, asking if the paper was leaning “too liberal” (short answer, no). The publisher asked if the paper should seek to be more conservative in outlook. (This was during the presidential campaign.)

As I occasionally write for the paper, I wrote back, noting that he has eyes, he can see how Mr. Trump treats the press. Does he possibly think that his newspaper would be spared if Mr. Trump got his wishes about “opening up libel laws” and other such nonsense? I noted to the publisher that our paper might not be first, but they’d get around to it.

Unsurprisingly, when he printed a selection of responses, none of them had any sort of liberal bias (meaning mine wasn’t there).

I’m torn on what to do about my newspaper subscription, which comes due next month. On the one hand, it is awfully conservative. On the other hand, it is my only source for local news.

Slate is alleging that Gov. Pat McCrory is trying to steal the election in North Carolina by delegitimising it.

They note in their article on all the challenges his campaign has issued to recount precincts there is no real way he can close the deficit in votes, however, there is a particular in North Carolina election law:

McCrory can, and probably will, still ask for a statewide recount. But he must know that a recount will not close such a sizable gap. His real goal appears to be to delegitimize the results to such an extent that the state legislature—which holds a Republican supermajority—can step in and select him as the winner. North Carolina state law states that when “a contest arises out of the general election,” and that contest pertains “to the conduct or results of the election,” the legislature “shall determine which candidate received the highest number of votes” and “declare that candidate to be elected.” By alleging fraud, mishandling of ballots, and irregular vote-counting, McCrory is laying the groundwork for the legislature to proclaim that a “contest” has arisen as to “the conduct or results of the election.” At that point, it can step in, assert that McCrory received “the highest number” of legitimate votes, and “declare [him] to be elected.”

Since high stock prices usually correlate with lower bond prices (and therefore higher interest rates) what you need to hope for is that we don’t have too much inflation starting up and raising the cost of a mortgage. That, of course, may reduce demand and prices for houses.

My wife and I auctioned our home in Oklahoma to get out of wingnuttia when Mary Fallin was elected (long story, but we would have lost our driver’s licenses due to draconian new policies she implemented for the disabled/chronically ill that would have cost us many tens of thousands of dollars).

We sold it right at the bottom of the housing crunch. My wife took a fifty percent loss on what she paid for it (she bought it before I met her, after her company in Colorado Springs went belly up and the wingnuts from Focus on the Family moved in).

That, with savings, still left us enough to buy our house here, but we can’t do that again.

Ultimately, this is what concerns me about this election. Wash away everything and say this election only ended up with Ryan attempting to gut Health Care and Medicare. When everything goes bonkers on that front, we can fix it. But we’ve got so much more than that. We’ve got white supremacists about to be in charge of the government. They will do damage to our psyche. And it’s really based around Republicans restricting voting in order to maintain power. The lead points out (emphasis mine):

My wife and I are co-dependent on each other. (That is a running gag between us.)

Our co-dependence is probably what keeps us from killing each other, as we are both very opinionated and forceful about those opinions (and hers and mine ofttimes do not mesh with each other - as an example, her former membership as an officer in the Colorado Libertarian Party whilst I belong to the Democratic Party).

The Economist notes that the press seemed to note the strongest correlation of Trump voters is the combination of white and no college degree (yours truly excepted, apparently).

The poured over the data and found a stronger correlation (correlation not being causation, but interesting nonetheless):

Ill health.

The Economist found that ill health, controlling for every other factor they could think of (age, education, race, income level, &c) was the best predictor of a Trump voter.

The data suggest that the ill may have been particularly susceptible to Mr Trump’s message. According to our model, if diabetes were just 7% less prevalent in Michigan, Mr Trump would have gained 0.3 fewer percentage points there, enough to swing the state back to the Democrats. Similarly, if an additional 8% of people in Pennsylvania had engaged in regular physical activity, and the rate of heavy drinking in Wisconsin were 5% lower, Hillary Clinton would have won the electoral college vote and be set to enter the White House. But such counter-factual predictions are always impossible to test. Unfortunately, there is no way to re-run the election with healthier voters and compare the results. But the evidence suggests that Mr Trump performed well in communities that are literally dying.

There’s an Op Ed in the LA Times today by a writer who has a book based on the theory that JFK wasn’t the actual target in Dallas. According to this theory, the really target was Texas Governor John Connally.

Basic story is that Oswald wanted to kill Connally because after his attempted defection to the USSR his honorable discharge was reduced to undesirable discharge. When Oswald returned to the States, that undesirable discharge likely cost him jobs, he wrote to Connally who was Navy Secretary at the time, and was ignored.

In the hours after the Kennedy assassination, after Lee Harvey Oswald shot and killed Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit and was identified as the president’s assassin, a Secret Service officer named Mike Howard was dispatched to Oswald’s apartment. Howard found a little green address book, and on its 17th page under the heading “I WILL KILL” Oswald listed four men: an FBI agent named James Hosty; a right-wing general, Edwin Walker; and Vice President Richard Nixon. At the top of the list was the governor of Texas, John Connally. Through Connally’s name, Oswald had drawn a dagger, with blood drops dripping downward.

That’s actually an interesting theory; JFK ends up being inadvertently assassinated by a man with what sounds like a pretty hardcore grudge against Governor Connally. Unfortunately, we’ll never know, as Oswald never got to testify in court - Jack Ruby saw to that.

MLK is killed by the FBI this is found out and Chicago is burned to the ground and cities across the country are destroyed by blacks enraged by the murder.
JFK is caught up in the race riots and Saigon falls and he leaves office disgraces, broken, beaten, and maligned.

Nice counterpoint to that: there are some states (among them, Virginia, I believe) that require an attorney to be present at the close of escrow to go over loan documents with the buyer. These attorney’s explain what’s in the loan documents and what the terms will be - they are fiduciaries of the buyer. In those attorney closing states, the number of defaults were significantly less than other states.

Looking at those NYT tweets, and recalling our discussion from last night, it appears as if the editors/journalists are still asking questions about beliefs, not facts.

For example, the question for Trump ought not be whether he “believes” that man has something to do with climate change. Rather, ask him if he is aware of the research and statements by the professional bodies of physical scientists. And if he is aware of them, why does he choose to not accept them and rather select someone like Myron Ebell.

Again, journalists should be asking questions about facts, not feelings.

I’d guess sooner, Spring 2018 is in the middle of the primary season, the revolt from the Trump base could cost a lot of them in the primaries (or the general). Depending on how crazy things go (and let’s be honest, at this point we should just plan for it going to 11), Trump could be facing impeachment, stumping for primary challengers to members of his own party, and the Old Gods know what else.

Yesterday’s meeting with those 5 broadcasting companies “news” heads, as I noted, was a message to each one of them, that this is how Trump will do press, and if anyone of them falls out of line then they won’t be included in the next round.

This meeting with the NYT is in the same vein. The NYT is a company that needs a competitive advantage and by having access today then, for today anyway, they have the advantage over other news outlets.

Contrast this with an open news conference, where any legitimate reporting organization can send a rep to ask questions.

The not-need-to-spoken deal that Trump is trying to make with the NYT is this: unlike other news companies which for now are shut out, I will give you exclusive access, if…

As I noted yesterday, the halls of power in DC are in bed (literally in some cases) with the media. There are plenty of quid pro quo going on, every day.

Of course Rush is batcrap crazy and upset Trump’s not going after Clinton. It’s also not surprising that Trump’s breaking his campaign promises. First of many to come in just the next few weeks.

Trump identified his marks well. They bought his con.

Call me cynical, but someone like Rush easily would have been part of the con instead of a victim of it.

His listeners (and those of the conservative talk radio cabal) undoubtedly bought that con job hook, line and sinker.

The whole situation is unpredictably nuts. The evangelical faction of the Republican party seems to believe that the plan all along was to impeach and convict the shitgibbon, who by any sane standard looks a lot more like the Antichrist than the anointed servant of God, to install Pence. I doubt this was the plan for real, since a Republican Congress impeaching a Republican President has got to be such an obvious electoral disaster they can’t possibly want to do that.

But, I’m guessing they’ll be forced into it from the staggering incompetence and graft we’ve already seen two weeks into the transition. Lindsey Graham is already investigating the turnip’s ties to the Russian government. Bannon is plotting out a sort of Herrenvolk socialist paradise in direct opposition to Ryan’s colorblind plutocrat dystopia.

This would be a topic of concern if it were in, say, Belize, but we are talking about the most powerful country in history. This is insanity.

Please always report accounts like that. I (ahem) was among those who had reported Tila Tequila and Richard Spencer and it is gratifying and makes a refreshing change, having sometimes reported dangerous and offensive material that was on Twitter and fb only to get a response suggesting I’m just a crank. fb afaik is still a hate factory and a haven for expressing hatred and inflicting hurt. Good on Twitter for finally taking the issue more seriously. Good on Charles for pointing it out.
