Major Advertising Supplier Bars Breitbart “News” for Hate Speech

Hopefully others will follow suit
Media • Views: 67,436

Anyone who’s aware of the vile content that’s standard fare at Breitbart “News” probably won’t be surprised by this development.

AppNexus Inc., a major advertising technology provider, has barred Breitbart News from using its ad-serving tools because the conservative online publisher violated its hate speech rules.

AppNexus scrutinized Breitbart’s website after U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump tapped Steve Bannon, former executive chairman of Breitbart, to be White House chief strategist last week. The digital ad firm decided the publication had breached a policy against content that incites violence, said AppNexus spokesman Joshua Zeitz.

“We did a human audit of Breitbart and determined there were enough articles and headlines that cross that line, using either coded or overt language,” he said.

The website headed by the president-elect’s chief strategist is losing advertisers due to its virulent hate speech.

This is not normal.

Yeah but PEOTUS says Breitbart dot com is just a “news” site, like NYT. A little more conservative, but hey, just a “news” site.

From the Bloomberg article:

Google’s DoubleClick service, the leader in digital display advertising, still powers ads on Breitbart’s website. That’s despite Google rules barring its ads from running next to “harassing or bullying content” and “content that incites or advocates for harm against an individual or group.” A spokeswoman for Google declined to comment.

Other ad tech companies whose networks work with Breitbart defended their partnerships as evidence of the web’s openness. Ad firm OpenX is “proud to support a free and vibrant internet,” said spokeswoman Lekha Rao.

“We do not make it our business to police editorial content,” said Jeffrey Hirsch, Chief Marketing Officer for Pubmatic, which offers tracking tools that appear on Breitbart . com.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A New York woman seriously hurt protesting the Dakota Access oil pipeline faces multiple surgeries and could lose an arm, her father said Tuesday, and protesters and law enforcement gave conflicting accounts about what might have caused the explosion that injured her.

Sophia Wilansky, 21, was listed in serious condition and was undergoing surgery at a Minneapolis hospital.

Wilansky’s father, Wayne Wilansky, said his daughter was hurt when law enforcement threw a grenade. The Morton County Sheriff’s Office maintains authorities did not use concussion grenades or any devices that produce a flash or bang during a clash late Sunday and early Monday near the camp along the pipeline route in southern North Dakota where protesters have gathered for months.

The sheriff’s office suggested in a statement Monday that an explosion heard during the skirmish might have been caused by small propane tanks that authorities said protesters had rigged to explode.

Dallas Goldtooth, a protest organizer with the Indigenous Environmental Network, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday. Wayne Wilansky disputed the claim by authorities, saying “there’s multiple witnesses and my daughter, who was completely conscious, said they threw a grenade right at her.”

The North Dakota Highway Patrol in a statement Tuesday backed up the sheriff’s office’s version of events, saying officers during the skirmish spotted protesters with “multiple silver cylinder objects.”

“It was at this time an explosion occurred and several protesters ran to the area, pulled a female from under the burned vehicle, and fled the scene,” the patrol said.

Officers who investigated found 1-pound propane tanks “including one that appeared to be intentionally punctured,” the agency statement said.

So…an editor from Politico doxxed Spencer?

A Politico editor has resigned after publishing what he said were addresses for prominent white nationalist Richard Spencer on Facebook.

The Daily Caller reported that national editor Michael Hirsh had resigned after publishing a Facebook post Tuesday that read “Stop whining about Richard B. Spencer, Nazi, and exercise your rights as decent Americans.”

“Here are his two addresses,” Hirsh continued, before listing two addresses he claimed belonged to Spencer. The post the Daily Caller piece referenced are no longer accessible on Hirsh’s public page.

Hirsh also had tweeted on Monday “it’s good that neo-Nazi Richard Spencer is moving to Washington. It’s important that we know where he lives.”

Rod Dreher has decided the liberal media cannot be trusted with anything, so they must be lying about Bannon…

I’ll tell you what was taking so long: I genuinely can’t get a handle on Bannon. As I started reading up on him, I realized that I had absorbed the narrative that he is a complete and total villain. But something about the stories and opinion pieces I was reading about him didn’t quite fit. I couldn’t put my finger on it. Then I read the transcript of a 2014 speech he gave at a Vatican conference, and it set me back.

...That war triggered a century of barbaric — unparalleled in mankind’s history — virtually 180 to 200 million people were killed in the 20th century, and I believe that, you know, hundreds of years from now when they look back, we’re children of that: We’re children of that barbarity. This will be looked at almost as a new Dark Age.

But the thing that got us out of it, the organizing principle that met this, was not just the heroism of our people — whether it was French resistance fighters, whether it was the Polish resistance fighters, or it’s the young men from Kansas City or the Midwest who stormed the beaches of Normandy, commandos in England that fought with the Royal Air Force, that fought this great war, really the Judeo-Christian West versus atheists, right? …
…And we’re at the very beginning stages of a very brutal and bloody conflict, of which if the people in this room, the people in the church, do not bind together and really form what I feel is an aspect of the church militant, to really be able to not just stand with our beliefs, but to fight for our beliefs against this new barbarity that’s starting, that will completely eradicate everything that we’ve been bequeathed over the last 2,000, 2,500 years

*****

Yes, right! A guy with this kind of insight is the white supremacist ogre moving into a White House office? Really? More, from the Q&A:

…when capitalism was I believe at its highest flower and spreading its benefits to most of mankind, almost all of those capitalists were strong believers in the Judeo-Christian West. They were either active participants in the Jewish faith, they were active participants in the Christians’ faith, and they took their beliefs, and the underpinnings of their beliefs was manifested in the work they did. And I think that’s incredibly important and something that would really become unmoored.

This is the anti-Semite troll I’ve been told so much about? Again: really? Bannon, a veteran of Goldman Sachs, spends a big part of the Q&A period criticizing crony capitalism, in particular conservative politicians who support it.

Read the whole thing. Note well that Bannon gave this speech, and answered questions about it (also in the transcript), in 2014. I agree with a lot of what he says here, though I fear that his belief that the racists and anti-Semites of the Alt-Right will “all burn away over time and you’ll see more of a mainstream center-right populist movement” — I fear that that is too naive.

Rod is looking for any reason he can find to justify going along with the alt right while still claiming his holier than all the rest of us status.

So he will blame the media and say Bannon was smeared by liberals.

42
Scottishdragon  Nov 22, 2016 • 2:55:02pm

Dreher especially loves to blame (insert strawman culture war meme about liberals here) for why conservatives do whatever it is they just did or why Trump was elected.

Usually some story about college kids on a campus or something a liberal professor wrote in a journal that nobody had heard about until Dreher started screaming about it.

The “holier than thou,” “above it all” crowd have been hard at work for the last two weeks now, trying to normalize Trump and his racist cabal as just another new administration, any outrageous positions and views just “difference of opinion.” Dig deep enough into the metric tonne of shit and you can find some small speck of humanity that you can use to justify the argument that they’re not racist bigots, they’re just “normal” people.

Defamation, legally speaking, usually has to specifically identify someone with the untruthful statement. Saying generally that “protesters did this or that” probably isn’t enough. Now, if they were to say this particular protester or protesters did this (and of course, they didn’t do this thing) then it would be defamation.

Because we’re hardwired to think that every emergency is either “overblown” or that there’s a cheap fix. Case in point, the HVAC unit in our house is on the fritz again and I just informed my father. Obama was the first president to win by better than 50% of the popular vote and 300+ electoral college votes since ‘84. He not only did so twice, he won states that had been viewed as reliably red for generations. Wingnuts insisted he wasn’t elected by the “majority” of voters and argued that he had no mandate as a result.

But Trump wins by less than 300 EVs and loses the popular vote, but he’s treated as if he’s Reagan incarnate.

Defamation, legally speaking, usually has to specifically identify someone with the untruthful statement. Saying generally that “protesters did this or that” probably isn’t enough. Now, if they were to say this particular protester or protesters did this (and of course, they didn’t do this thing) then it would be defamation.

Which is fair. It’s only the current behavior by the LEOs that don’t inspire any semblance of trust whatsoever (especially some of their recent tactics to redefine the terminology of pepper spray).

If they are embellishing to any degree (more likely than defamation) this could wind up becoming even more of a gigantic PR nightmare for them.

I do tend to believe that there has been a breakdown of trust in institutions in our society (not that I was ever really trusting of them to begin with), but the breakdown has been hastened by the institutions themselves. And a free society can only exist if it there is some basic trust that institutions act fairly. This may turn out to be another example, sadly, though, a rather large portion of the population isn’t paying attention.

We’re still counting here… Clinton is now about 300k votes short of Obama 2012, and Trump is 800k short of Romney.

The number of votes cast for President looks like this year will top 2012 by a noticeable margin. It all depends upon the provisional ballots.

I’m sorry, but I don’t think this is a condemnation as all of the media have been calling it. I’d call it a mild chastisement and a sorry/not sorry.

“I don’t want to energize the group, and I disavow the group,” Trump told a group of New York Times reporters and columnists during a meeting at the newspaper’s headquarters in New York. “It’s not a group I want to energize, and if they are energized, I want to look into it and find out why,” he added, according to one of the Times reporters in the room, Michael Grynbaum.

How much are they willing to pay? The spawn will be taking bids to decide which side they’ll support.

Good question, since they don’t have much clout to begin with. More from the link:

Assyrian Patriotic Party and Assyrian Christian militia Dwekh Nawsha leader Emanuel Khoshaba Youkhana said standing by the Assyrian people is tantamount to supporting those who share the Judeo-Christian values that helped shaped America.

“As an Assyrian Christian and as one of the leaders of the Assyrian people, I am reaching out to President-elect Trump to ask for his support in helping the Assyrian people to achieve their aspirations to reside in their historical homeland,” said Youkhana. “In doing so, I wish to assure President-elect Trump that a strong and viable Assyrian Christian community in the Middle East will be a stalwart friend and steadfast ally of the United States,” he continued

Syriac Catholic Patriarch Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III Younan, on the other hand, is hopeful that Trump will “help secure peace” and safeguard Christianity’s future in its historical cradle in the Middle East. He also expressed hope that American politicians will urge their people to not close their eyes to the ongoing atrocities, genocide, and persecution that Christians and other members of the minority in Iraq and Syria have experienced.

In an exclusive interview with Christian Broadcasting Network’s The Brody File before he ran for president, Trump said he will be the “greatest representative of the Christians they’ve had in a long time.”

Trump also expressed his outrage at the fact that many Christians in Iraq and Syria cannot come to the United States to escape persecution even if they want to, but Muslims from the same region can easily come. He said Christians are getting bad treatment because they have no one to represent them.

Make that what you will.

re: #120 Pawn of the Oppressor

There’s been a talking point floating around the Wingnosphere for years about how KenyObummer is letting in eleventy billion raving scimitar-swinging Islamic head-choppers from Syria but the good pious Chrischuns are stuck in Gubmint Paperwork hell and evil Saytin Sekrit Mewzlim Obama is ignoring their plight because he is against Chrischuns. Or something.

Wouldn’t be surprised if it literally isn’t happening, I haven’t found any facts on the issue that don’t come from Freedomeaglenewsfreedom on Facebook.

Spot on. I know I mentioned this before, but I can’t help but to note the immense cognitive dissonance displayed here by wingnuts.

On one hand they purport to be the vanguard of Middle Eastern Christianity, even though they supported an illegal invasion that directly contributed to the destruction of it. They keep advocating more Christians to arrive in this country from there. They already contributed to destroying Japanese Christianity by nuking Nagasaki, so what’s the big deal in the Middle East, right?

But on the other, when it comes to Christians from Central America, where they are fleeing not from Muslim extremists but from drug cartels? Not a pint of outrage from these self-described guardians of the Cross. When it came to allowing Dominicans to settle in America, this was the response by our own beloved Jeff Sessions:

“…The heart of Thiel’s case for Trump was that America has become a risk-averse society, frightened of the radical change necessary for its survival. It needs disruption. But Trump is not a disruptor: he is a spiteful mischief-maker. The people who voted for him did not believe they were taking a huge gamble; they simply wished to rebuke a system on which they still rely for their basic security. That is what the vote for Trump has in common with Brexit. By choosing to quit the European Union, the majority of British voters may have looked as if they were behaving with extraordinary recklessness. But in reality their behaviour too reflected their basic trust in the political system with which they were ostensibly so disgusted, because they believed that it was still capable of protecting them from the consequences of their choice. It is sometimes said that Trump appeals to his supporters because he represents the authoritarian father figure who they want to shield them from all the bad people out there making their lives hell. That can’t be right: Trump is a child, the most childish politician I have encountered in my lifetime. The parent in this relationship is the American state itself, which allows the voters to throw a tantrum and join forces with the worst behaved kid in the class, safe in the knowledge that the grown-ups will always be there to pick up the pieces.

This is where the real risks lie. It is not possible to keep behaving like this without damaging the basic machinery of democratic government. It takes an extraordinarily fine-tuned political intelligence to target popular anger at the parts of the state that need reform while leaving intact the parts that make that reform possible. Trump - and indeed Brexit - are not that. They are the bluntest of instruments, indiscriminately shaking the foundations with nothing to offer by way of support.”

As Josh Marshall noted the other day, the term “conflict of interest” is wholly inadequate for the simple reason that Trump’s interests are to make as much money as possible and he sees political office as the means to do so. Hence why he feels the law is on his side, because he doesn’t see his interest as serving the American people.

Right off the bat, Mr. Brooks tells his readers to completely ignore the tens of millions of actual Trump supporters, and what they actually think and say and do, and instead… (From the NYT):

I’ve been thinking a lot about the best imaginable Trump voter. This is the Trump supporter who wasn’t motivated by racism or bigotry. This is the one who cringed every time Donald Trump did something cruel, vulgar or misogynistic.

But this voter needed somebody to change the systems that are failing her…

And just like that we’re all mounted up and ready to go for another of Mr. David Brooks’ famous Unicorn Safaris. But this year, instead of hunting for the elusive “Reasonable Republican” or the wily “Late Blooming Independent”, Mr. Brooks will be leading his band of wealthy deluded shut-ins even deeper up his own ass in In Search Of…

…the Noble Trump Voter.

The best imaginable Trump voter is totally indifferent to Trump’s bigotry, and is also indifferent to Trump’s other innumerable and show-stopping character flaws.

Pretty much. Pundits like Brooks had put all their chips on Trump losing, so his victory has left them in the very uncomfortable position of explaining how in the holy fuck their party could have elected such a conman to the White House. Their only conclusion? The loonies are a very loud minority, that the majority of Trump supporters are good and honest people whose reasons for voting for Trump were noble and thus his presidency will not be one built upon a foundation of hate and bigotry.

It helps to remember that the same nimrods are the ones who spent 2002-2005 cheerleading for the Iraq War, then once they realized it had become a major political boondoggle began making excuses about how Democrats had forced them to go to war.

Bernie posted a message to the New Republic:

It should be clear to every Democrat by now that when we’ve lost the presidency, the Senate, the House, and two-thirds of state legislatures, we need to seriously rethink who we are and how we best go forward.

The Democratic Party is the party of diversity. We have proudly led the fight against racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, and for the rights of immigrants. Especially under a Trump administration, we are not turning back. We are going forward. There can be no compromise on bigotry.

Our job is to expand diversity. We want more women, more African-Americans, more Latinos, and individuals of all ages, colors and creed to be involved in the political process. But to think of diversity purely in racial and gender terms is not sufficient.

Yes, we need more candidates of diversity, but we also need candidates - no matter what race or gender - to be fighters for the working class and stand up to the corporate powers who have so much power over our economic lives. We need all of our candidates to have the courage to stand up to the Koch Brothers, Wall Street, drug companies, insurance companies, oil companies, and fight for working families — not just the top one percent.

Our rights and economic lives are intertwined. Now, more than ever, we need a Democratic Party that is committed to fulfilling, not eviscerating, Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream of racial, social, and economic justice for all.

And while I’m torn about what to do about Bernie remaining an independent, I have to agree with this comment at Daily Kos in response to the issue:

That’s fine but if that is you take the purity approach, you must also purge the DINOS that vote with Republicans far more than Bernie Sanders ever has or you have no leg to stand on.

Think Manchin.

(D) has to stand for something more than not-(R). The realities of competing in tough states and Congressional districts can’t be ignored, but Republicans pretending to be Democrats aren’t going to help very much.

Honestly, to me there’s a difference between Manchin and a moderate to conservative Dem. But the question has to be asked, do we want a Progressive party or do we want a party that competes nationally? Because if we want the latter, we won’t get the former without some compromises and electing people like that.

I’d love to live in a perfect world too, but we don’t so we have to pick our fights. A conservative Democrat who will vote for the party 50% of the time is still better than a wingnut Republican who will vote for his party 100% of the time. As HW noted, we can either be a national party or we can be a progressive party, we can’t be both in the present political environment.

And, once again, you then run into the Democratic problem of getting people to turn out. If we could get voters to turn out, we could have done the following:
1. Pass the ACA as it is now.
2. A couple of years later, realize that drug prices are going up too fast, and adding the ability to negotiate prices.
3. A few years later, ___________.

But we ran into the wall of a small group saying they didn’t go far enough, and another group saying they’re doing pretty good, they don’t need my help.

I also think that we need to understand that the Democratic Coalition still must include the working class voters who are reactionary voters. I think a large part of the White working class that voted for President Obama twice were voting as angry and as against something as many of us probably feel they did this year. I think that they’ve been conditioned to be reactionary. Democratic and Republican politicians have used their fears over the course of time. We try to convince them with policies that should speak to them, but this time fear won out. Bernies speak to the working class by trying to end income inequality and other ideas won’t work if these voters worry about the fear and not the policy.

The fact of the matter is, the way you get to those voters is through hollow promises i.e. bringing the mines and steel mills back or how Reagan did with empty rhetoric. What Senator Sanders doesn’t realize or acknowledge is we lost a lot of white working class voters when we became nationally a pro civil rights party and the Republicans took advantage of anger about that fact. Now are there whtie working class voters that aren’t hostile to civil rights? Of course, there are but the Republicans got this group by playing to their resentments. Despite what Sanders says, adapting his positions on economics isn’t going to win them back. Did Clinton underachieve with these voters? Sure she did but at the same time, I was glad that she was honest with them about the reality of trade and things like coal mines rather than lying to them too.

I’d need to see her interviewed more to tell you the truth but I am just not impressed with her. And before someone says it’s because she backed Bernie, Raul Grijalava and Keith Ellison were both Bernie backers and are excellent. Tulsi’s got the hostility against the Iran deal and the support for Assad/Putin in Syria as big strikes against her. She also was hostile to LGBT rights overall for a long time not merely gay marriage though I do give her points for working hard to change on that and even co-sponsor pro LGBT legislation.

Same here. What I’m seeing from Bernie and his bros is to pretend “identity politics” lost the Dems the election. Not gerrymandering, not voter suppression, leaking, hacking, biased media coverage and fake news. Pretending it was a normal election gives Right wing rigging a pass. Bernie and his bros solution is to adopt white male identity politics while throwing the majority of Dem voters under the bus. Fuck them. They can not be allowed to take over the part.

I’m tired of hearing about the white working class. They hurt the gay working class, the brown and black working class and the female working class, by electing assholes to take away our rights or prevent reforms from being enacted that would improve the lives of everyone. Its the white working class that keeps electing Republicans that outsource their jobs too. Making women buy for birth control is an economic issue. Forcing women to have children they can not afford to have is an economic issue. Taking away gay marriage rights or firing gay people for being gay is an economic issue. Having crappy schools in brown and black neighbors is an economic hurdle. The prison industrial complex that targets black and brown men is an economic issue because once they are hit with a felony its impossible to get a decent paying job. Not having paid child care and family leave is again an economic issue for women and families. Our entire economy is geared toward paying women, and people of color less money too. Bernie did not address any of these concerns, and instead dismissed the organizations and leadership that represent us as inconsequential or worse part of the establishment. I will never support Bernie and his class based appropriate because it leaves me and everyone who isn’t a white straight male out of the equation of full income equality.
