Major Advertising Supplier Bars Breitbart “News” for Hate Speech

Anyone who’s aware of the vile content that’s standard fare at Breitbart “News” probably won’t be surprised by this development.

AppNexus Inc., a major advertising technology provider, has barred Breitbart News from using its ad-serving tools because the conservative online publisher violated its hate speech rules. 

AppNexus scrutinized Breitbart’s website after U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump tapped Steve Bannon, former executive chairman of Breitbart, to be White House chief strategist last week. The digital ad firm decided the publication had breached a policy against content that incites violence, said AppNexus spokesman Joshua Zeitz.

“We did a human audit of Breitbart and determined there were enough articles and headlines that cross that line, using either coded or overt language,” he said.

The website headed by the president-elect’s chief strategist is losing advertisers due to its virulent hate speech.

This is not normal.

That’s despite Google rules barring its ads from running next to “harassing or bullying content” and “content that incites or advocates for harm against an individual or group.” A spokeswoman for Google declined to comment.

Other ad tech companies whose networks work with Breitbart defended their partnerships as evidence of the web’s openness. Ad firm OpenX is “proud to support a free and vibrant internet,” said spokeswoman Lekha Rao.

“We do not make it our business to police editorial content,” said Jeffrey Hirsch, Chief Marketing Officer for Pubmatic, which offers tracking tools that appear on Breitbart . com.

Wayne Wilansky disputed the claim by authorities, saying “there’s multiple witnesses and my daughter, who was completely conscious, said they threw a grenade right at her.”

The North Dakota Highway Patrol in a statement Tuesday backed up the sheriff’s office’s version of events, saying officers during the skirmish spotted protesters with “multiple silver cylinder objects.”

“It was at this time an explosion occurred and several protesters ran to the area, pulled a female from under the burned vehicle, and fled the scene,” the patrol said.

Officers who investigated found 1-pound propane tanks “including one that appeared to be intentionally punctured,” the agency statement said.

A Politico editor has resigned after publishing what he said were addresses for prominent white nationalist Richard Spencer on Facebook.

The Daily Caller reported that national editor Michael Hirsh had resigned after publishing a Facebook post Tuesday that read “Stop whining about Richard B. Spencer, Nazi, and exercise your rights as decent Americans.”

“Here are his two addresses,” Hirsh continued, before listing two addresses he claimed belonged to Spencer. The post the Daily Caller piece referenced are no longer accessible on Hirsh’s public page.

Hirsh also had tweeted on Monday “it’s good that neo-Nazi Richard Spencer is moving to Washington. It’s important that we know where he lives.”

Defamation, legally speaking, usually has to specifically identify someone with the untruthful statement. Saying generally that “protesters did this or that” probably isn’t enough. Now, if they were to say this particular protester or protesters did this (and of course, they didn’t do this thing) then it would be defamation.

Because we’re hardwired to think that every emergency is either “overblown” or that there’s a cheap fix. Case in point, the HVAC unit in our house is on the fritz again and I just informed my father. Instead of agreeing with my assessment (which has been right the last 3 times we’ve had issues since this unit was installed), he gave the exact same line: “Just change the filters.”

I do tend to believe that there has been a breakdown of trust in institutions in our society (not that I was ever really trusting of them to begin with), but the breakdown has been hastened by the institutions themselves. And a free society can only exist if it there is some basic trust that institutions act fairly. This may turn out to be another example, sadly, though, a rather large portion of the population isn’t paying attention.

Pundits like Brooks had put all their chips on Trump losing, so his victory has left them in the very uncomfortable position of explaining how in the holy fuck their party could have elected such a conman to the White House. Their only conclusion? The loonies are a very loud minority, that the majority of Trump supporters are good and honest people whose reasons for voting for Trump were noble and thus his presidency will not be one built upon a foundation of hate and bigotry.

Yes, we need more candidates of diversity, but we also need candidates - no matter what race or gender - to be fighters for the working class and stand up to the corporate powers who have so much power over our economic lives. We need all of our candidates to have the courage to stand up to the Koch Brothers, Wall Street, drug companies, insurance companies, oil companies, and fight for working families — not just the top one percent.

Our rights and economic lives are intertwined. Now, more than ever, we need a Democratic Party that is committed to fulfilling, not eviscerating, Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream of racial, social, and economic justice for all.

And while I’m torn about what to do about Bernie remaining an independent, I have to agree with this comment at Daily Kos in response to the issue:

That’s fine but if that is you take the purity approach, you must also purge the DINOS that vote with Republicans far more than Bernie Sanders ever has or you have no leg to stand on.

This evening I came home to an Amazon order on my porch with the Ron Howard DVD about the Beatles on tour, the DVD of ‘Eyes On The Prize”, and CDs by Dusty Springfield and Steeleye Span. This long weekend is going to be spent escaping to the 60’s.

It’s just astonishing watching Trump assemble his advisors and cabinet. You couldn’t put a worse team in place even as a joke. It’s like a who’s who of miserable wretches and morons. Carson just said last week that he doesn’t know enough to be able to serve in government. Now he changes his mind? Did he forget what he said? He’s senile.

Honestly, to me there’s a difference between Manchin and a moderate to conservative Dem. I’d love to live in a perfect world too, but we don’t so we have to pick our fights. A conservative Democrat who will vote for the party 50% of the time is still better than a wingnut Republican who will vote for his party 100% of the time. As HW noted, we can either be a national party or we can be a progressive party, we can’t be both in the present political environment.

And, once again, you then run into the Democratic problem of getting people to turn out. If we could get voters to turn out, we could have done the following:
1. Pass the ACA as it is now.
2. A couple of years later, realize that drug prices are going up too fast, and adding the ability to negotiate prices.
3. A few years later, ___________.

But we ran into the wall of a small group saying they didn’t go far enough, and another group saying they’re doing pretty good, they don’t need my help.

The fact of the matter is, the way you get to those voters is through hollow promises i.e. bringing the mines and steel mills back or how Reagan did with empty rhetoric. What Senator Sanders doesn’t realize or acknowledge is we lost a lot of white working class voters when we became nationally a pro civil rights party and the Republicans took advantage of anger about that fact. Now are there whtie working class voters that aren’t hostile to civil rights? Of course, there are but the Republicans got this group by playing to their resentments. Despite what Sanders says, adapting his positions on economics isn’t going to win them back. Did Clinton underachieve with these voters? Sure she did but at the same time, I was glad that she was honest with them about the reality of trade and things like coal mines rather than lying to them too.

I’d need to see her interviewed more to tell you the truth but I am just not impressed with her. And before someone says it’s because she backed Bernie, Raul Grijalava and Keith Ellison were both Bernie backers and are excellent. Tulsi’s got the hostility against the Iran deal and the support for Assad/Putin in Syria as big strikes against her. She also was hostile to LGBT rights overall for a long time not merely gay marriage though I do give her points for working hard to change on that and even co-sponsor pro LGBT legislation.

Same here. What I’m seeing from Bernie and his bros is to pretend “identity politics” lost the Dems the election. Not gerrymandering, not voter suppression, leaking, hacking, biased media coverage and fake news. Pretending it was a normal election gives Right wing rigging a pass. Bernie and his bros solution is to adopt white male identity politics while throwing the majority of Dem voters under the bus. Fuck them. They can not be allowed to take over the part.

I’m tired of hearing about the white working class. They hurt the gay working class, the brown and black working class and the female working class, by electing assholes to take away our rights or prevent reforms from being enacted that would improve the lives of everyone. Its the white working class that keeps electing Republicans that outsource their jobs too. Making women buy for birth control is an economic issue. Forcing women to have children they can not afford to have is an economic issue. Taking away gay marriage rights or firing gay people for being gay is an economic issue. Having crappy schools in brown and black neighbors is an economic hurdle. The prison industrial complex that targets black and brown men is an economic issue because once they are hit with a felony its impossible to get a decent paying job. Not having paid child care and family leave is again an economic issue for women and families. Our entire economy is geared toward paying women, and people of color less money too. Bernie did not address any of these concerns, and instead dismissed the organizations and leadership that represent us as inconsequential or worse part of the establishment. I will never support Bernie and his class based appropriate because it leaves me and everyone who isn’t a white straight male out of the equation of full income equality.
