Lyrics:

What you got on tap
I’ll take two of that
I’m chasing a story I heard
When I was here last
At the back of the class
You pretended you never got lost

Yeah at the back of the class
In the back of the bus
Sitting out at the dance
Always saying no thanks
When they see you around
You look down at the ground
But when they walk away
You wish they’d stayed…

Never never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never never mind your bleeding heart
Never never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never never mind your bleeding heart

You can’t help but stare at everyone there
It’s you versus everyone else
Your outfit’s a crime
You feel their cold minds
Placing you under arrest
And you serve your time
Drinking all night long
Staring at the walls
Of your jail-like home
Listening to that song
’Cause it hurts just right
Till everything is gone tonight…

Never never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never never mind your bleeding heart
Never never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never never mind your bleeding heart

Someday you’ll grow up
And then you’ll forget
All of the pain you endured
Until you walk by a sad pair of eyes
And up will come back all the hurt
And you’ll see their pain
As they look away
And you want to help
But there’s just no way
’Cause you’ve won the war
So it’s not your turn
But everything inside still burns…

Never never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never never mind your bleeding heart
Never never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never never mind your bleeding heart

How long must I wait…
’til you learn that it’s not too late
How long must I cry…
’til you know that you really tried
How long must I try…
’til you learn that dreaming’s hard
How long must I dream…
’til you heal your bleeding heart
Never mind your bleeding heart…

Right now, I’m doing the up and down thing with regard to the election (which is seriously wreaking havoc on my blood pressure), but I do keep these positive things in mind:
1. Way more people voted for her than Trump, and there are a lot of additional people who do not like Trump (they just couldn’t vote for Clinton).
2. When we hear reports of Trump supporters doing things, I’m hearing quite a few of the stories accompanied by people standing up to them.
3. There are a lot of people talking about how we’re going to deal with this together.
We have a lot to do, and a lot to fight, and elections in 2018 to win, but I feel we can win this. We’re just going to have to deal with a lot of shit in the mean time.

I’m watching and donating to the Louisiana Senate Race and the NC Governor’s Race, which is really a snarl. McCrory is asking for a recount, and if he doesn’t like it, can ask that the governorship be submitted to the Legislature (if I am understanding correctly) and it is overwhelmingly Republican.

re: #13 The Vicious Babushka

One of my kittehs got washed away in a creek flood (along with several others we never found). Two weeks later I found him on top of a farm power pole (not nearly that tall — maybe 20’). He had been battered, back permanently damaged, big knot on his side. (BTW, he was 15 years old.) I got him to climb most of the way down, and then he ran from me into a corn field. I pursued him for a long time, but finally caught him and brought him in. He is now 16, going on 17 (no Sound of Music), and just walks very oddly. Paces, and crooked.

Hi, lizards.

I’ve taken a few days off site, trying to understand this whole goddam mess and drinking substantially. Also rereading yet again Shirer’s Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, which bears a sickening familiarity to recent events. Let’s hope that the Fall part comes more quickly and with far less horror.

Oddly, my old Mom had been predicting the election’s outcome for several months. Her reasoning was simply that Trump was a TV personality and would attract lots of idiotic voters for that reason alone. I of course tried to argue differently.

After the results were known, she naturally gave me a few I-told-you-so’s. But then yesterday she made a truly chilling prediction: “You just watch, if one of those Kardashians runs next time, she’ll win.”

UW-Madison falls from nation’s top five research universities

For the first time in nearly 45 years, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has fallen from its standing among the nation’s top five research universities, according to data from the National Science Foundation.

UW-Madison had been ranked among the top five in research expenditures since 1972, but a drop in research activity in fiscal year 2015 bumped the state’s flagship university from fourth to sixth among all U.S. private and public universities, according to the most recent figures compiled by the NSF.

Add this to the list of colossal fuck-ups vis-à-vis US foreign policy in the Muslim world during the Cold War era, and how it has manifested itself to this:

The key group behind the rally was the notorious Islamic Defenders Front (FPI). FPI accused Ahok of insulting the Quran when he encouraged a small audience, during his work visit, not to be deceived by those who sought to use Quranic verse of Al-Maidah 51 to prevent voters selecting a non-Muslim leader.

The allegation of blasphemy against Ahok was validated by a fatwa issued by National Ulama Council (MUI). This quasi-government institution was created under the authoritarian government of Suharto in the early 1970s, and it regularly seeks to express authoritative rulings on issues of public interest.

As we all know, Suharto was an extremely close and vital ally in SE Asia in the fight against Communism. Because of this, many Muslim allies of the U.S. during the Cold War initiated similar programs aimed at countering the leftist narrative, but inadvertently empowering Islamic extremists that have spiraled out of control as we all continue to witness to this day.

Such short-sightedness on our part. Sad thing is that wingnuts will never engage in any introspection and will justify it somehow.

(My long essay. Not so novel, just a distillation of what has been said by many as well as by myself.)

Asymmetrical Ideological Warfare.

That’s the phrase that popped into my mind as I ruminate on why Trump “won”. I put that in quotes because we all know he did not win the popular vote, so not only did he not get the majority of votes but he didn’t even get a plurality.

But he still won because of our arcane electoral college system for selecting the chief executive of the Executive branch of the US government.

And Trump did this by flipping WI, MI, and PA.

How did Trump do that?

All three states are not part of the old Confederate South, not even close. Literacy is high in all three (WI, MI, PA.)

Rather, Trump offered an alternative to the contemporary ideology of the “liberal”, to use a term that I maintain is not really the best description to understand American politics, but which seems etched into the vocabulary of the both the talking-head crowd on TV and in the blogosphere.

One of the characteristics of the contemporary worldview found among those of us who might self-label as “progressive” or “modern Democrat” or “coastal elite”, is that we have very ambiguous views towards some things held dear by many traditionalists (those who want to self-label as “conservative”) in America.

One of those dear things is religion. Many of us here, if we’re not atheists or agnostics, hold religious beliefs that have been highly moderated by the past two centuries of philosophical dialogue. We don’t believe the Bible was literally dictated by God (even if we still practice a religion based on the sacred texts of the late antiquity Judaism or early Christianity). (I realize there are a few Muslim posters here, but in the context of working out what happened in WI, MI, and PA I do not believe that the Muslim populations in those states played an active role in getting Trump elected, even in MI with it’s noticeable Muslim population. There is a lot of Islamophobia in America, but for now I am considering the actions of the voters themselves, not Islam as an object of fear. I.e., the Muslim voter herself in Dearborn was unlikely to vote for Trump.)

Another characteristic typical of us progressive/liberal/elitists is that we like the nuances of history, what I will call the Conflicted Past. We see American history, for example, as one of both expansion and warfare, of opportunity and hegemony, of liberty and slavery, of idealism and crass opportunism. We accept that the US Constitution as originally written was highly flawed because it was written by highly flawed men. We accept that.

“Ideology” means literally the study of ideas, but in practice means a system of ideas, and that his how I will use it here.

Here is what Trump promised: assurance. Assurance about the goodness and intelligence of his followers. Trump emphasized over and over in his gatherings:

America is good.

America was great, and will be great again.

America is special.

You are good.

You are “the smart people”.

This is in contrast to, for example, my own “coastal elite” ideology:

America is neither good or bad, but has done both good and bad things.

America is one modern nation-state among many. Each nation-state has its plusses and minuses.

People, Americans, like the state, do both good and bad things. Some people do more of the latter than the former. Others do more good than bad and that is very fortunate for us all.

Most people are average, by definition. A few people appear to be quite intelligent, but that has nothing to do with the morality or value of that person. A few people seem to be a bit slower than others in grasping ideas, but again that has nothing to do with morality or value of that person. Most Americans are average, and that is quite ok. Exceptionalism is for the vain.

My observation is that Trump appealed quite a bit to the vanity of his followers. He himself is vain, as is obvious, but he also modeled that repeatedly for his followers. He intended, and worked at, making his followers feel good about themselves for being his followers.

And this is what was so asymmetrical to the approach by Clinton. Hillary offered policies that most people would agree are an extension of what has worked so far, a continuation of the modern ideas of governance. And her slogan of “together” raised the group over the individual.

Trump offered to make his voters feel good about themselves. The individual feel good about himself, in a very primal way. Trump’s campaign was not about governance.

I wonder if, in the final tally of votes, Clinton actually performed above her level of inherent favorability, because so many people were turned off by Trump. While I’ve written before about the Trump fans on my Facebook wall, there are also a few who traditionally vote Republican who refused to vote for Trump. One claimed to vote for Clinton. The others third party. I note how well Clinton did here in SoCal, carrying even Orange County, a traditional Republican stronghold.

I think we do a disservice to many to think that Hillary didn’t work hard enough, or that the Democratic platform was not good enough, etc.

I’ve concluded that this election was very much about traditionalism (almost tribal) versus the nuanced complexity of contemporary governance.

One very important difference between the coast regions which Clinton carried and the states of WI, MI, and PA is that those three states were formed and grew as part of the great expansion of America. (Remember, even during the Revolution, western PA was a wilderness. Southeast PA was the populated part of the colony and early state. And it is the later-settled areas of PA that Trump carried.)

What makes the Pacific coast states, and New York and New England, so “liberal” that even Trump’s appeal to vanity could not sway these regions to him?

That’s a good question. I will note that WI, MI, and PA all share a history of rapid industrial growth in the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, and that was important culturally. While we can say that even though the post-industrial re-tooling of life in those states has reduced unemployment significantly, I think we ought not overlook the fundamental problem of change. The adaptation to the loss of the old jobs can be accounted for on the ledger books, for sure, but the cultural dynamic of changing expectations requires adaptation and with that comes angst arising out of the loss of certainty.

Into such an environment Trump conducted his ideological warfare, where he attacked the complexities of international diplomacy and economics (that brings such instruments such as NAFTA and TPP) not just in their substance but in the very foundation of why such efforts are undertaken at all.

Trump conducted warfare against the new, against having to adapt, using tactics out of the old playbooks of previous atavists.

Against this Clinton and the DNC had no counter because they were fighting a battle that was elsewhere in the mind-space of Americans. Clinton was attempting to come up with even better, new policies, when the war being fought was new vs. old.

And for those of us who don’t like the outcome (in the electoral college), I propose that we have to accept that voters in states like WI, MI, and PA went for the atavism rather than shiny new policies.

Trump is an ideological warrior, though I think too many people miss this, because his vanity is so bright and gilded it can obscure what is going on underneath. His current battle, now that he’s won the electoral college, is against the traditions of the press (today more generally “the media) that’s formed since the era of Edward Murrow instituted the audio-visual understanding of “news”.

We have to not shy away from fighting an ideological war. This is my biggest critique of Obama: he assumed the ideological war was won and didn’t fight for ideas as much as some of his predecessors in the Democratic party (see JFK, or HHH.)

We need to fight for concepts of identity, of the role of government, about a theory of liberty that can survive the 21st century , etc.

The people who fought for women’s suffrage, or for the right to unionize, and so forth, are now dead. Their great grandchildren have benefitted from their work, but did not experience what life was like before labor laws or non-discrimination laws.

So I don’t shy away from telling people that Social Security is socialism, as is the VA and so many other things Americans, including Trump voters, take for granted. It can be hard to argue that someone has benefited from the loss of individuality, but that doesn’t mean we give up trying to convince them that the progress since the 18th century, from which they have benefited, has been built on ideas their preachers and favorite talk-show hosts like to berate so often.

Other battles over ideology can be even harder. It is why I post on creationism so much. Modern science has demonstrated than the evolution of the fauna includes the emergence of humans. We are animals. That is what we are. We come from other animals, not from anything else. This is hard for many Americans, because it means their core belief system is flawed. But when Hillary took her pro-abortion stance in one of the debates, the underlying idea behind that position is that a zygote is just a cell. Not a special creation miracle by God. That is never stated out right by most politicians like Clinton, but it is the underlying concept behind accepting abortion as ethical. If you really believed a zygote was a person then of course you think abortion is murder. The war over abortion is most definitely a religious one, and in the latest battle in this war Hillary Clinton lost.

I don’t know if anyone makes it to the end of this ramble, but my summary is simply this:

Do not ignore that you are in an ideological war. It is a battle for ideas, that has run for a very long time and will continue into the future past your demise. It is wrong to think there is one “enemy”. Rather, you are fighting a collection of traditions, echoes of the past. In American politics we have to think beyond tactical minutiae such as massive computer databases mined for the addresses to which to send the latest flyers. We have to convince people to let go of old ideas and accept new ones.

Aggies used to kill Nazis. Now they invite them to speak.

Richard Spencer, White nationalist and creator of the term “alt-right,” will be speaking in Rudder Tower this December.

Spencer will be speaking on the alt-right movement, a radical offshoot of conservatism which promotes white identity and white nationalism. Spencer’s speech will be focusing on explaining what the alt-right is, and how he believes this movement will affect the United States.
……..

“…Preston Wiginton, white nationalist, organizer of the event and member of the alt-right, said the movement is not about saying white people are better than other races, but that white people should be able to separate themselves and have pride. Wiginton has brought white nationalist speakers to the university in the past, and attended the Texas A&M University from 2006 to 2007 before withdrawing to go to Russia.

“If we want to have a white state, or a white community or a white homeland we should be able to have that,” Wiginton said. “We respect that for all people. If we look at the NAACP, black people have the right to have that. Why can’t white people have a WAACP?”

If ever the California spirit had relevance, well today it does again. Trump gets zero California EC votes. Our state government will not help with any deportation program more unkind than what we choose. Our counties and cities will follow suit. And enjoy the beach.

I see it like this. No point in stressing over worst scenarios. The law is on our side if imperfectly and unevenly. I hear talk of unwise desperate measures. Too soon. We have the law and it can delay and put off and appeal and file continuances… The majority of us can act in support of those most threatened. Like I said before nothing fancy. Just say hello and be a neighbor. Hostile people come calling we can help like PP escorts. Bear witness and tweet and FB live stand up and say no. So much possible before anyone has to bend a law let alone become some kind of outlaw.

They were letters written by my dad to his parents starting in 1941 when he was in army boot camp through WWII until he was on a ship in August 1945 on the way to invade Japan. I didn’t read all of them yet, having trouble seeing through all that liquid filling my eyeballs, but I will.

re: #63 freetoken

Well said, and right on the money. You can see the traditional vs. modern views of history and America’s place in it in the conservative furor last year about the new AP US History framework, which encourages teachers and students to apply historical analysis and interpretation to US history. Conservatives are horrified at this concept, because they want all high school students to learn about American exceptionalism and the City on the Hill version of history as much as they want biology students to learn about creationism/ID. No matter that history and biology are academic fields that strive to combat myth and legend with facts and scientific analysis. Such professionalism attacks the core beliefs of the conservatives — they know what is True within their hearts, and anything contrary to that Truth is the Enemy.

Trump, consciously or not, tapped into that emotional reaction to modernity. He played those traditionalists like fiddles, and some of them could not see through his political charade and voted for him.

I’m in a rather special situation, working in China on a monthly salary, but even I get paid “overtime” for additional duties. For example, if I’m judging an English speaking contest, I’m paid for those two hours over and above my monthly pay. Or, if I coach students who will participate in the provincial English speaking contest, I’m paid for those 6 extra hours of teaching. It’s something I never expected, but certainly appreciate, and it’s one reason why I have stayed at the same uni for 8 going on 9 years.

So, if a public university in a communist country can see the value in remunerating its staff for extra duties performed, why can’t employers in capitalist America see it, too?

OTOH, China has no labor unions, so hourly workers are regularly taken advantage of. In that aspect, the USA is still miles ahead of the land of the “workers’ revolution.”

Before I came to China, I was teaching in a private high school in the States for a fairly decent salary. We were paid extra if we served as department chair or as an advisor to a student club or activity, but not for working past “closing time,” or for coming to the evening parent activities or (dog forbid) prom. It was those extra duties for no additional pay that kinda wore me down, because they were expected of us — and you of course got “brownie points” if you volunteered — but were not a formal contractual requirement.

People have this impression that teachers have it easy — we get those long vacations, for example. But they don’t see all the extra work we do “off the clock” for no additional pay.

I’ll tell you something else. We don’t like paying millions of dollars for Mrs. Obama’s vacations. The NASCAR crowd doesn’t quite understand why when the husband and the wife are going to the same place, the first lady has to take her own Boeing 757 with family and kids and hangers-on four hours earlier than her husband, who will be on his 747. NASCAR people understand that’s a little bit of a waste. They understand it’s a little bit of uppity-ism.

Somehow I’m guessing all the flying back and forth Trump is going to be doing between DC and NY and the dual protection required to keep his family in NYC is not going to be considered uppity by Rush. I wonder why…

A Muslim girl wasn’t allowed to box in a hijab, so her opponent shared victory with her

[Aamiya] Zafar, a devout Muslim from Oakdale, Minn., wears a hijab under her headgear as well as a shirt and leggings under her shorts and top. Such apparel has been deemed a violation of uniform regulations set by the International Boxing Association for reasons USA Boxing executive director Michael Martino called “clearly a safety issue.”

As a result, Zafar was disqualified, and her opponent, Aliyah Charbonier, was declared the winner — though that didn’t quite sit right with Charbonier. So she approached Zafar.

“This girl comes up to me then and puts her belt in my lap and says, ‘This is yours. They disqualified you. You’re the true winner. This is unfair,’ ” Zafar recalled over the phone Tuesday morning. “Then we started hugging each other, and the owner [of the event] came and got me to make sure I got [a belt.]”

The international boxing association requires bare arms and legs “for safety reasons,” presumably so refs and officials can see if the boxer has injuries. Considering the Olympics has allowed Muslim women to play beach volleyball in head-to-toe clothing, it seem reasonable for boxing to make some allowance for Muslim boxers.

When I was in Malaysia last winter, there was an indie film out of Singapore called Banting (Slam). The main character is a twenty-something woman who secretly is a wrestler during the evenings. Funny how life imitates art.

When I was stationed in Spain in the early Nineties, there were still plenty of people around who supported Franco’s regime (including my landlady).

There was an article about that recently. I’m honestly surprised Franco still has that many admirers after 41 years.

It will be interesting to see if the NC GOP actually has the gall to anoint McCrory Governor despite his actually having lost the election.

Rudy would be a disaster as SoS. He’s not a diplomat, and AFAIC, too old and loudmouthed for the job.

Bolton would just as soon initiate World War III as negotiate a peace treaty. He’d be a worldwide disaster.

So, Romney by comparison is acceptable.

Well, I don’t know if he still has that admiration, as it has been more than twenty years since I lived in Rota.

What got me about it was, during the Spanish Civil War, the region of Andalucia strongly opposed Gen. Franco. Franco economically punished Andalucia for decades after that, yet people supported him. (Perhaps it was the relative stability of Spain under the fascist regime, I don’t know exactly. As an American living in a neighbourhood with no other Americans, I stayed out of political discussion.)

re: #142 Big Beautiful Door

It will be interesting to see if the NC GOP actually has the gall to anoint McCrory Governor despite his actually having lost the election.

The bill they passed last year that allows for the legislature to simply appoint the winner in case there was significant doubt about the electoral process (not the number of votes) almost makes this look like it was planned.

Pat McCrory has now filed for a statewide recount (which is his right), but is alleging voter fraud. There was an article I cannot find now that also alleged that filings in every county were pretty much cookie cutter filings, that were traced back to the NC State Board of Elections. The Democrat on that board challenged the state IT department of generating those filings. The board then absolved itself of wrongdoing.

It would appear that a slo-mo coup is going on in the NC Governor’s race. All the hullaboo could cause the state legislature to declare a lack of confidence in the election, then last year’s law is employed to simply declare a winner, regardless of the votes.

Another victory for the White working cl….oh wait.

A Texas judge ruled Tuesday to put the brakes on federal rules that would have expanded overtime pay to more than 4 million workers.

A rule from the Department of Labor that was supposed to take effect next week would have made overtime pay available to full-time salaried employees earning up to $47,476 a year, more than doubling the current threshold of $23,660 a year.

Employees earning below that threshold would qualify to earn one and a half times pay for any time worked beyond 40 hours a week. The rule was set to go into effect Dec. 1.

I expect an avalanche of pundit analysis about how this relates to the Great White Working Class.

But right wingers want people to think that Obama unleashed racism? Sorry, but racism and bigotry never went away. Obama’s presidency revealed that the bigotry and racism is alive and well, and Trump’s win showed that there’s a lot of pushback to minorities gaining rights and equality.

And the bigotry extends beyond racism, to include anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and we see it in Trump’s immigration policies (banning Muslims and others from entering US) - basically a white supremacists’ wet dream of stopping non-white immigration to the US, in the perverse hope that they can stem the tide of being demographically outnumbered by minorities in a few generations. Race war and all that craziness is still their ultimate goal, and Trump’s policies feed this hate. Elevating Bannon and other extremists to key roles further cements the white supremacists beliefs in key policy positions.

We see it with a likely Trump inner circle extremist Kobach’s voter restrictions that make it tougher for minorities to vote - depriving them of the rights that so many take for granted.

Christian Identity pastor Mark Downey of Florence, Kentucky, is suggesting the incoming minority-President’s administration should start cracking down on Jews right away.

“The wolves in evangelical clothing will not tell you the following things to do, because for the most part, they are shabbez goi, which means they are the lackies for their Jewish masters,” wrote Downey, who essentially encourages Trump to recast himself as a religious leader.

“If you want to make America great again, it is imperative that we isolate ourselves from a world gone crazy,” Downey wrote. “It is madness to impose other morals and values upon this once great Christian nation. Think of it: a White Christian America as envisioned by our founding fathers or a third world melting pot that has no identity, no heritage and thus no future of greatness. No other religion will make America great again. Have you ever heard ‘No King but Jesus’?”

I can’t wait for the Christian Identity church up the road from my house to go full metal wingnut. I am not really in a position to get away from them if they choose to come after my very public ass.

I was talking with my grandmother just last night about this and she was talking about how towards the end of her father’s life, he could barely breath and walk. I’m sure he was proud of his work but he didn’t do it because he loved coal, he did it because he was an immigrant with a limited education and mining was the best thing he could have done. He did it so his descendants could have a better future. One of his daughters, my godmother went to college but nearly all his grand children and great grand children have.

Exactly. Why is Senator Sanders slandering Democrats by implying that we aren’t fighting for the working class? And why is he implying that we can’t be concerned about both the working class (all races) and the problems faced by various groups in this country (racism, sexism, homophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism)? It is not an either or proposition.

If Romney is the selection for SoS, I’d be relieved that there would be at least one level headed adult in the Situation Room when there is a crisis.

Okay…now I’m getting hungry. I fuckin’ love breakfast burritos.

Here…let’s look at last night’s dinner again. Friend’s folks visiting from out of town…so we broke out the good Chinette. She rented a house for them over by the harbor across the street from us and picked up 10 crabs from one of the boats. I asked if she needed an extra crab pot for boiling and she said “Yes!” - so I brought two…then I cooked the crabs, cleaned them, served them…but I do enjoy eating them so it was worth it.

The promise of coal mining or any other traditional industry is that a man with minimal education or training can work hard and support a family, own a house and put his kids through college while his wife stays home or works part-time.

That is the rose-colored vision of America that Trump successfully sold to the disenfranchised white American heartland.

We all know those (unionized) jobs are gone and that unskilled work and single-earner households are a thing of the past, but we still long for that era.

But they aren’t Americans.

Ayn Rand noted that Native Americans deserved to lose their lands because they “weren’t doing anything with them.”

While African-Americans have been part of the USA since colonial days, they did not become citizens until after the Civil War. (Sovereign Citizen nonsense thus claims that African-Americans belong to the State but SCs are “free men.”)

Immigrant families (meaning “those people”) didn’t found the country, why do they want to have a say in how it’s run?

Since white Americans in fact controlled the levers of power in Colonial America and beyond, it must “always be that way.” (It is very much like religion.)

I’m glad he filed a complaint with the Montgomery County police department. I’m kind of surprised because Montgomery County is pretty deep blue but I guess racist cops are everywhere. Sigh.

Montgomery County Police Department has had issues going back almost a decade:

On February 17, 1997, the local Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) body voted overwhelmingly in passing a resolution of no confidence in Mehrling’s abilities as chief, claiming that she was not doing enough to defend MCPD officers against accusations of misconduct and abuse by the NAACP. As a result of these allegations, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) launched an investigation into the operations of the MCPD. On November 17, 1998, Mehrling announced that she would retire from the MCPD and did so on February 3, 1999, with Thomas Evans becoming the acting chief.

Throughout much of the 1990s, the MCPD faced numerous allegations of abuse, excessive force, and misconduct, including fatal officer-involved shootings in Wheaton and Silver Spring in April 1999 and March 1999, respectively. These accusations resulted in the U.S. Justice Department investigating the department for three years.[23][5][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32]

[…]

On January 14, 2000, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between the U.S. Department of Justice and the MCPD regarding abuses and misconduct committed by the latter. The agreement detailed how the MCPD was to address and correct the misconduct and abuses committed by its officers.[34]

Oregon Councilman: I’m Not Racist for Sharing Video of Driver Running Over Black People, You Are (goes to Raw Story)

An Oregon city councilman tried the “I’m rubber, you’re glue” defense after he posted a racially charged video encouraging violence against black protesters.

Daniel Benjamin, a city councilor in Salem, posted the violent video on his personal Facebook page showing a vehicle plowing into several black people as ominous music plays, reported KATU-TV.

The post includes a description from a conservative blogger complaining that “people are starting to get tired of the Black Lives Matter bullies blocking the roadways.”

Civil rights activists have called for Benjamin to resign, saying the post was “sickening.”

“You’re promoting racial intimidation and harassment and possibly murder,” said Teressa Raiford, lead organizer for Don’t Shoot Portland. “Ask him to resign or just go ahead and get done with him.”

Montana Trump Electoral College elector: Execute Gays, Hang Them Up Where They Can Be Seen (goes to Raw Story)

Scranton took things a bit further. “I think fruits are decorative. Hang up where they can be seen and appreciated. Call Wyoming for display instructions,” he said. Wyoming is the site where Matthew Shepard was severely beaten, tied to a fence and left for dead just outside of Laramie in the late 1990s.

When he spoke to The Gazette this week, he didn’t back down from his remarks, however.

“Don’t forget, I’m 93 years old. I come from a different era. I hadn’t heard of anyone being homosexual until I joined the Navy, and then I encountered them,” Scranton said. “We were raised with good morals.”

So, you take the Bible literally. Old Testament even?
Yes.
Gays must be stoned/killed?
Yup. That’s in Leviticus.

Okay, so you don’t eat shellfish?
Wait, what? Where’s that?
Leviticus (11:9).
Nope, that’s superseded by NT

What about digging on swine?
What? Bacon’s good.
Um, no. It’s not. And that’s in Leviticus (Leviticus 11:7 and Deuteronomy 14:8)
Superseded by NT too.

Mixing clothing fabric types? Fringes on clothing? Eating milk and meat? Proper slaughtering of animals? Eating only certain prescribed animals in a certain fashion?

*crickets*

That’s all in Leviticus too - Leviticus 11 deals specifically with food that can or can’t be eaten - Kashruth is based on all this.

Oh really? So, you get to play pick and choose about what’s followed and what isn’t based on how you feel about a specific portion of text? Interesting. So, I guess you ignore that the NT doesn’t feel the same way you do about gays.

These folks engage in the pick and roll - they pick what they want, and roll however they damn well please, no matter the consequences to others.

www (dot) constitutionmythbusters (dot) org

The wingnut Christian Identity church up the road from me has a blog post on “Constitutional Idolatry”

Election day is the Constitutional Republic’s national idol’s high holy day by which its god We the People6 are empowered and further entrenched in their constitutional idolatry. Why would any Christian want to perpetuate this idolatry?

Constitutionalists often contrast the divine right of kings with the divine right of the people…. The only difference between the divine right of kings and the divine right of the people is the number of people involved. Whether ruled by one or many, it is still humanism. The “divine right” of the people to elect whomever they wish replaced not only the divine right of kings and parliament, but also the divine right of Yahweh as God, King, Judge, and Lawgiver.7 James Wilson, one of Pennsylvania’s delegates to the Constitutional Convention, labeled this divine attribute “sovereignty”:

Election is the exercise of original sovereignty in the people….

There is only one Sovereign and it is certainly not the people:

…He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords…. (1 Timothy 6:15, NASB)

It’s for this reason constitutional elections represent treason against Yahweh. How could it be otherwise? Constitutional elections, perhaps more than anything else, perpetuate this ungodly system, which was created by freemasons, enlightenment thinkers, and legalers when they replaced the 17th-century Colonial governments of, by, and for God established upon His immutable moral law.

For Christians, this amounts to drinking from the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils at the same time. It’s essentially the same as if an Old Covenant Israelite participated in electing a Baal priest.

Members of the American Legion frequently refer to it as “The Legion,” as do other veterans organisations like the VFW and DAV. It may be nothing more than that.

That may be true, but we are talk information on traffic. The Montgomery County alerts sent by text all refer to is as the American Legion Bridge. The shortening is not a help to people who aren’t in the know of VFW and DAV lingo.

And, BTW the alert I just received says it is all clear on the bridge, now. But, the beltway being what it is, I would expect the backup to still be clearing up when afternoon rush hour begins and Thanksgiving day traffic continues. Avoid that area at all costs.

Their automated system for reporting abuse does not allow for appeals (such as YouTube). Mark Zuckerberg could impose an appeal system, but that would involve hiring people to review the appeals. As a libertarian he doesn’t care to hire anyone he doesn’t have to. Moreover, Peter Theil is on Facebook’s board of directors.

Twitter is no different. (That is one of three reasons I have never had a social media account other than places like this.)

Social media platforms are going to go right along with the press in normalising the minority president and his neo-Nazi followers.

We have entered into the Great American Idiocracy and the Alternate Media Reality.

I cannot imagine that our mainstream press is going to have the guts to take on Trump; they will find it safer to normalize and rationalize his behavior by superficially attacking his outrageous acts and utterances while ignoring the key issues (incompetence, conflicts of interest, support for and from fascists and extremists).

I couldn’t agree more. Unlike the Bush era which transitioned back to Obama normally, I honestly believe that we’ve undergone an irreversible change — or if reversible, at a cost we can’t estimate yet.

The only way Twitter and Facebook are going to get it (vis. Jim Wright, &c) is if people en masse give up Twitter and Facebook. (I don’t mean stop posting, I mean close accounts.)

That isn’t going to happen, because the overwhelming majority of their users just don’t give a hoot.

a) I use Facebook to keep in contact with my family and friends.

b) I use Facebook to follow the news.

- I have newspaper and magazine subscriptions (real ones, not on-line)

c) I use Facebook to meet like-minded people with my interests.

So, does that mean we can now normalize Bolshevik rhetoric? I wonder if the wingnuts would need fainting couches, pearls to clutch and smelling salts if someone posted a modified version of Lenin’s ‘Hanging Order’.

“Comrades! The insurrection of five kulak districts should be pitilessly suppressed. The interests of the whole revolution require this because ‘the last decisive battle’ with the kulaks is now under way everywhere. An example must be demonstrated.

Hang (and make sure that the hanging takes place in full view of the people) no fewer than one hundred known landlords, rich men, bloodsuckers.
1) Publish their names.
2) Seize all their grain from them.
3) Designate hostages in accordance with yesterday’s telegram.

Do it in such a fashion that for hundreds of kilometres around the people might see, tremble, know, shout: “they are strangling, and will strangle to death, the bloodsucking kulaks”.

Telegraph receipt and implementation.

Yours, Lenin.

Find some truly hard people”

Certainly but you know what, the fact that we have a man like Bannon advising the President bothers me a bit more than some college students. But maybe that’s just me! - I write letters. The ones that use paper and stamps. I make phone calls. I visit in person (where I can).

That goes back to my original argument, people do not care enough to send Zuck a message in sufficient numbers (close accounts) to make a difference.

I realise Facebook is “more convenient.” A letter might take three or four days to get to someone.

It really comes down to convenience, even though Facebook collects every last little privacy thing it can about you (another reason I don’t use it). It is more convenient to have Facebook’s newsfeed foist off a bunch of nonsense than actually read magazines or newspapers. It is more convenient to write a message for twenty people to read than send twenty postcards.

Maybe it’s just me. I grew up without Facebook, Twitter, or even dial telephone service. No television in the house (there were only three stations we could have gotten anyway).

While technology hasn’t passed me by (I understand how Facebook works, I just refuse to participate in being a marketing target), I stick to old-fashioned personal methods of communication.

(I’ll be mailing out holiday cards right after Thanksgiving, including everyone in my village. Gives the Post Office business - after my wife and I fought so long to prevent its closure, we make sure we use it.)

Donald Trump is poised to eliminate all climate change research conducted by Nasa as part of a crackdown on “politicized science”, his senior adviser on issues relating to the space agency has said.

Nasa’s Earth science division is set to be stripped of funding in favor of exploration of deep space, with the president-elect having set a goal during the campaign to explore the entire solar system by the end of the century.

re: #356 Anymouse

I have some family that live overseas. It’s really not mere convenience, it’s necessity.

Take a load of this bullshit someone wrote on a friend’s FB:

It is amazing how some feel it is their duty to condemn a duly elected President elect and Vice President based upon what they project they might (or might not) do.

It is this same perspective that caused them to INCORRECTLY anticipate the outcome of the election. And sadly, they cannot see that this is a continuation of that same failed mental process.

The left cannot accept the fact that most people in the Heartland of America don’t share the values of the people living on the East Coast or the West Coast. And there are many more people who live outside of the top 10 cities than who reside in them.

I did not vote for Trump. But as president, I will give the man in the office the respect to which he is entitled. And the benefit of the doubt that he may well do good in that role.

I am loyal to the Constitution and the system of governance it prescribes. That is the definition of a loyal American.

We are a republic, not a democracy. And if popular vote is something you want, then you can either:
(a) Change the Constitution
(b) Bitch about it pointlessly and become “that” personality (it’s like drinking poison and hoping someone else dies)
(c) Move to another country (which many people promised, but no one has had the guts to do)
(d) Learn why the Constitution was constructed as such, or
(e) Shut the fuck up.

Those are the options.

New paragraphs from my short story set in the Spanish Civil War.
Juan Miguel starred at Pedro intently. The eyes of the boy that had once been his best friend now were the eyes of a fascist enemy. An odd silence quickly ensued. Finally one of the other Nationalist soldiers broke the long silence,
“Iglesias, you know this man?”
Pedro nodded and explained that long before the Republic was founded, the two had been friends as boys. Pedro wanted to know what made Juan Miguel embrace socialism and Juan Miguel likewise wanted to know what made his friend turn to Fascism. Juan Miguel’s thoughts flashed back to his childhood. In those days, there were no republicans or fascists; everyone was a subject of the king. Even though both men’s political views were far apart now, they both could look at that time period as a simple and idyllic time. After the Republic was declared, Juan Miguel, always bookish had taken to reading about Republics around the world. He had read about the American one and it did bring him some pride as a Spainard knowing that the Spanish had helped the Americans achieve victory in their war for independence even though his uncle had fought the Americans in the Spanish-American war. But it was the French Revolution that captured his imagination the most. The principles of “Liberté, égalité, fraternité” resonated with him. He had decided he would go to university and not become a soldier as his father had but a lawyer and champion the rights of all. He chose to go university in the great city of Barcelona.

There isn’t anything wrong with convenience. But using Facebook or Twitter because it is convenient means you accept the bad with the good. Son of Scranton, Pa., former internationalist chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, champion of civil rights and women’s rights, friend of cops and of Black Lives Matter protesters, supporter of the working man who commands the respect of chief executives, wildly popular vice president who was encouraged to run for president himself this time around — Biden should be our immediate and consensus choice.

This is the Trump cabal in action:

Donald Trump’s eldest son, emerging as a potential envoy for the president-elect, held private discussions with diplomats, businessmen and politicians in Paris last month that focused in part on finding a way to cooperate with Russia to end the war in Syria, according to people who took part in the meetings.

Thirty people, including Donald Trump Jr., attended the Oct. 11 event at the Ritz Paris, which was hosted by a French think tank. The founder of the think tank, Fabien Baussart, and his wife, Randa Kassis, have worked closely with Russia to try to end the conflict.

Ms. Kassis, who was born in Syria, is a leader of a Syrian opposition group endorsed by the Kremlin. The group wants a political transition in Syria—but in cooperation with President Bashar al-Assad, Moscow’s close ally.

The disclosure of a meeting between the younger Mr. Trump and pro-Russia figures—even if not Russian government officials—poses new questions about contacts between the president-elect, his family and foreign powers. It is also likely to heighten focus on the elder Mr. Trump’s stated desire to cooperate with the Kremlin once in office.

“School choice” is about as Orwellian as you can get without quoting directly from his works. There is no choice, there’s the illusion of choice when the reality is that the government is not going to cut a check big enough to make a real difference to millions of poor Americans. But they will make a huge difference to the profit margins of diploma mills that will sprout up like weeds to suck up all those checks.

I’m sitting here on my bed drinking goooood coffee and snapping green beans while enjoying y’all’s company. Got guests starting to arrive this evening and more coming over tomorrow for an orphan party Thanksgiving feast. Since my little oven is too small to fit even a whole chicken I decided to take a different approach to the traditional feast: smoked turkey. (I’ve never smoked a turkey so hilarity is very likely to ensue.)

Menu:
Smoked turkey
Homemade BBQ sauce
Scalloped potatoes
Fresh green beans
Crock pot sweet taters with pecans
Homemade cranberry sauce with fresh ginger and Amaretto
Jalapeno cornbread muffins
Pecan and Dutch apple pies

What are y’all fixin?

Smoked Turkey Breast (just have to reheat)
Spaghetti Squash Carbonera Casserole (prep tonight - cook tomorrow)
Pie (probably Apple - brother will make that)
Stuffing (cooked outside the bird) - probably exotic flavored; like oyster and chestnuts
If necessary, backed sweet potatoes as well

Just three of us, and one is celiac and can’t do any gluten.

Some people are determined to prove that Ben Carson deserves to run a govt agency he knows absolutely nothing about:

Mind you, I grew up in NYC. I lived in a house (even a Trump apartment for a few years). That doesn’t make me an expert on housing and housing policy.

It doesn’t make me an expert on Section 8 or Mitchell Lama or any of the other housing programs around the nation. It doesn’t make me an expert on Nehemiah housing (affordable housing), or how to help nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity build homes for underserved populations, or that there’s all kinds of complicating factors, such as homeownership rates and how various home mortgage programs affect all of this - Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the programs launched to help homeowners after the financial crisis like HAMP and HARP.

Carson knows nothing from any of this. He’s a neurosurgeon. He doesn’t know what it takes to run a federal bureaucracy. But that isn’t stopping Trump from picking extremists (clueless and otherwise) for jobs they aren’t qualified for.

As for Mr. Trump’s tax returns, no one can simply request them. There is no law that requires a candidate to release tax returns, that is merely customary by candidates. Mr. Trump’s tax returns are in theory just as private as my tax returns.

If one had evidence of tax fraud or whatnot, one could turn that evidence over to the appropriate authorities, and they could request the tax forms. If his current wife or previous wives chose to release them (as they are also signatories on those forms) they could do so.

Other than that, those tax forms will remain just as secret as your tax forms.

There simply isn’t much a private person can do to address these issues. You have to have standing to sue, and on a lot of these issues, they fall into the realm of political questions - and the courts don’t address those.

If there are issues with security clearances, mishandling classified info, etc., that’s an issue that should be directed to the federal prosecutors who might choose to act on them. That would likely fall to the prosecutors in the SDNY (covers Manhattan) to consider.

Considering how opaque the entire process is with Trump, there’s no guessing what the heck is really going on and who’s in the room when these decisions are made. All of the evidence points to questionable acts.

Once he becomes President, you can call your federal representatives to launch investigations into it - ultimately seeking impeachment, but that’s about the extent of what a person can do.

With the extra bonus that those schools with be staffed by non-union teachers; the GOP is always looking for ways to break unions.

Newt Gingrich seems to think Jared Kushner could get around the anti-nepotism law and serve directly in the upcoming minority administration.

politico.com

More at Politico:

“I think they would have to get a waiver to the anti-nepotism law,” Gingrich, a longtime Trump surrogate, said on “Fox and Friends” on Wednesday. “That might be a little tricky, although I think if they worked at it, they could do it.”

Trump reignited the speculation over Kushner’s role in his administration when Trump floated the possibility that the 35-year-old could become a key broker for peace talks during an interview with the New York Times on Tuesday.

“I would love to be able to be the one that made peace with Israel and the Palestinians,” Trump said. He added that Kushner “would be very good” at such a job, and that “he knows the region.”

Congress passed the anti-nepotism law in 1967, possibly motivated by President Kennedy’s nomination of his brother Robert to become attorney general, but the law appears to apply to government posts far below the Cabinet level. Legal experts say Kushner’s appointment to a senior White House role would most likely trigger a debate over the statute. Kushner could be protected, however, by an obscure passage from a 1990s federal court decision related to Hillary Clinton’s role in trying to pass health-care reform.

Calling him one of the “smartest people I’ve worked with,” [ GAG ]Gingrich praised how Kushner, whose experience, like Trump, is primarily in real estate, could add a fresh perspective to peace negotiations.

Everyone, but particularly Lawhawk, help me out with this one:

Every day we see … let’s say irregularities. Ivanka on calls with PE. Is that legal? Is that a mishandling of potentially confidential material, if she doesn’t have clearance?
If she does - what about his business? Is that legal?
As PE, can someone FOI his tax return?

But - more importantly, I see talk about “Congress won’t…” and “The GOP haven’t the spine to…” Can a private citizen? Can someone say “this act, that has been reported, is in violation of these things, I want to bring charges”? Is that a thing that can’t happen?

What _can_ The People do?

Vote his ass out of office in 2020.

“At least” Trump isn’t nominating Carson for HHS. That would be far worse, IMO.

I dunno. Who has Trump put forth at HHS? There’s more barrel bottom to scrape I suspect.

Well that’s the trouble, isn’t it? There’s so much bad floating around the GOP, any pick for HHS is liable to really be horrible.

re: #537 freetoken

The problem with ships in the 21st century is that they are easy targets. If one can’t make a ship stealthy then any technological savvy enemy will be able to neutralize it.

The existence of the Zumwalt is an admission by the Navy that the 21st century offers tremendous challenges to any Navy fighting a battle against an militarily advanced foe.

And spending some effort researching the next step in naval developments* is something the US should do if it intends on remaining a global power. Naval units is probably the most dependable means of force projection since it does not require foreign basing rights, over water navigation is not simple and often trained, etc. And it has proven useful in the previous small conflicts since World War II.

* - Better means of protecting against detection and attacks from submarines, aircraft, etc. Thus work towards stealthier ships, more automation (allowing smaller crews), better defense/offense (stuff like railguns), etc.

And you see projects like this “between wars” were there are prototypes, one-off designs, etc. as various things are tried out. For instance, look at US submarine design work in the 1920s-30s as they worked through and towards the technologies necessary for a working “fleet boat”. Series of designs under a limited budget that looked at different sizes and tasks, engines, targeting computers (TDCs), air conditioning, etc. (And you also get the complete clusterf*ck that was the Mark 14 torpedo and its magnetic exploder.)

Maybe, okay likely, I’m naive but are there really not just a few sensible Republicans in Congress who see this catastrophe in the works and will vote with Democrats to stop it or at least slow it down?

Who knows what is going on in the minds of the never-Trump Republicans in Congress right now.

What I have noticed is how quiet they have been. Hardly a peep from anyone except Ryan.

There are some who have made encouraging sounds, like suggesting healthcare reform and tax reform need to proceed on a bipartisan basis, rather than just shoving through the zombie-eyed granny starver’s Randian fantasies.

Who in their right mind believes that Trump could negotiate “peace” anywhere, especially in the Middle East? I can’t even laugh at the ridiculousness of that suggestion.

I was actually thinking that the silver lining of the Trump Administration was that we might have a POTUS who was not going to spend any resources chasing that unicorn.

Though I don’t think Obama ever went down the rabbit hole either.

Despite their red-hat unity, the Republican majorities easily could turn out to be a dumpster fire in their own right. Who knows.

Rand Paul will oppose any nomination because that’s what Rand Paul does.

I don’t think Sen. Paul would oppose a nominee who wants to do the same things he does.

So Jerry Pournelle was just off by a few years on when the Co-Dominium was going to form.

I still say Heinlein was off by only 4 years for Nehemiah Pence.
