It Gets Even Worse: Trump Plans to Eliminate NASA Climate Research

“Politicized science”

Climate change is one of the issues in which the sheer derangement of the American right wing and Republican Party is most evident. Despite the fact that the vast majority of climate scientists in the entire world are convinced human beings are causing dangerous changes in the Earth’s climate, the Republican Party continues to either minimize the peril or deny it outright.

Some of these people are paid by energy industries to spread these falsehoods; others are religious fanatics convinced that only their god has the power to change the Earth’s climate. Whatever the motivation, this denialism is absolutely rampant in the American right, and is endangering the whole world by thwarting action to mitigate the effects of global warming at every turn.

Donald Trump is a prime example. He’s labeled climate change a “hoax,” started by the Chinese to destroy America’s economy.

And he’s poised now to act on these deranged convictions. A senior Trump adviser says he plans to eliminate NASA’s climate research because it’s “politicized science.”

NASA’s Earth science division is set to be stripped of funding in favor of exploration of deep space, with the president-elect having set a goal during the campaign to explore the entire solar system by the end of the century.

This would mean the elimination of Nasa’s world-renowned research into temperature, ice, clouds and other climate phenomena. Nasa’s network of satellites provide a wealth of information on climate change, with the Earth science division’s budget set to grow to $2bn next year. By comparison, space exploration has been scaled back somewhat, with a proposed budget of $2.8bn in 2017.

Bob Walker, a senior Trump campaign adviser, said there was no need for Nasa to do what he has previously described as “politically correct environmental monitoring”.

“We see Nasa in an exploration role, in deep space research,” Walker told the Guardian. “Earth-centric science is better placed at other agencies where it is their prime mission.

“My guess is that it would be difficult to stop all ongoing Nasa programs but future programs should definitely be placed with other agencies. I believe that climate research is necessary but it has been heavily politicized, which has undermined a lot of the work that researchers have been doing. Mr Trump’s decisions will be based upon solid science, not politicized science.”

The dishonesty of this last sentence is stunning — because having politicians decide which type of science research NASA should do is the very definition of “politicized science.”

The Republican Party’s first Chief Technology Officer (who came on-board a few years ago) has called on the GOP to get Mr. Trump to ditch Steve Bannon.

dailydot.com

President-elect Donald Trump on Monday over his decision to defend Steve Bannon, the on-leave chief executive of Breitbart News, who has been named chief advisor to the soon-to-be president of the United States.

Andrew Barkett, CTO of the Republican National Committee from 2013 to 2015, and the first to hold the position, wrote in an open letter that he formally denounced Richard Spencer, a leader among white supremacists affiliated with the so-called “alt-right” movement, and formally denounced Bannon, whom he said had provided a “safe space for these racists and intolerant points of view.”

“These are racist, intolerant ideologies,” wrote Barkett. “They go against the spirit and interests of the United States of America. These beliefs have no place in the party of Lincoln.”

As I noted downstairs, the Trump administration will ban “politicized science” in favor of “corporate science,” continuing the GOP tradition of blocking federal funds for research into things they don’t want to hear about in favor of reports from scam artists and corporate shills that reach the conclusions they favor. A generation ago, Trump would have been pushing to kill any federal research into the hazards of cigarette smoking or lead paint.

I can still remember since I was in introductionary bio at the time of the 2008 election, Palin scoffing at “fruit fly research” even though fruit fly research is vital to research genetics and traits since we obviously can’t study humans over multiple generations in the same time we can fruit flies.

They may not be the average conservative but they sure as hell have more in common wiht the right than the left and a pathetic whine about the staet of the parties 150 years ago doesn’t change a damn thing about white supremacists and Neo-Nazis firmly being on the right.

I wonder if any US Military head honchos are going to stand up and get in Trump’s ear about how they rely on NASA Climate Science to formulate long term strategies and asset acquisition plans. With the North Pole opening up, a failure to recognize inevitable navigation and resource conflict possibilities is a major lapse of leadership. Trading political gifts to those parties who profit from Climate Denial for crippling our defensive capabilities goes beyond criminal.

In fact, I think it is impeachable.

Well, if we wanna get pedantic, he plead guilty to mishandling because he faced felony charges for knowingly taking classified documents home, knowingly sharing them with his mistress, and then lying to the FBI when they investigated his actions. The last is what really steamed the Feds, which is why they felt his being allowed to plead to a lesser crime and walk with a slap on wrist was such an insult.

The GOP has basically told the DOD to drop “global warming” and “climate change” from their vocabulary and thus from any military planning. Why? Because the DOD has been one of the bigger voices on Capital Hill about the need to plan for the changes that global warming will do to the globe. For example, the coming resource wars when nations begin fighting over limited supplies of fresh water.

2m of sea level rise will wreck havoc with many ports. Annapolis, home of the USN Academy, and major USN facilities in Norfolk and San Diego, just to name two of the biggies.

Yes, open seas in the Arctic will beg for USN operations, but that is not as damaging as having to build all new ports.

As for the Army - the reality is they don’t want to fight never-ending battles in the emerging deserts of Africa and South Asia. If we don’t eliminate carbon emissions, by the middle of the 22nd century many nation states will be in crises from significant hyrdological changes.

Not of this is especially speculative. Societies struggle with too much change too quickly. This is not a mystery.

But we humans on the whole are not so big into long term planning, so Trump wins.

The United States Border Patrol has erected a temporary facility to manage the detention of several hundred people after a recent surge of migration in the El Paso region.

The enormous temporary tent is based at the Guadalupe port of entry east of El Paso. It can hold 500 people and was built to accommodate a surge of Central American immigrants at the southern border.

The Border Patrol’s El Paso Sector had nearly 4,000 unaccompanied children this year, more than double the previous year.

b) He doesn’t take advice

The fundamental issue that I see is how the tRump will listen to his advisors.

a) It’s been well established that he mirrors the last person who spoke to him.
b) He doesn’t take advice
c) He’s a moron
d) He listens to his uninformed brain (because he doesn’t/can’t read and comprehend) and takes that advice
e) We’re fucked

So, the various factions are probably going into an internecine war. Maybe they’ll all eat each other and leave the rest of us in peace.

Trump’s presidency is going to be never-ending series of pulse-the-blender eventS. The only certainty is (e) above: WE’RE FUCKED!

That assumes a level of cause and effect in Trump’s actions that is not supported by the evidence. Trump is a complete weathervane on everything that he does not personally profit from. A proposal to burn Hillary Clinton at the stake could easily be announced from the oval office next year if a RWNJ advisor piddles in Trump’e ear just before the cameras go live.

Trump is Sarah Palin born into wealth. The grift is Trump’s one and only business model.

I was kind of equally pleased and pissed off with the article (written by Jeffery Toobin), and I finished up feeling like Frank can have as positive an outlook as he does because he’s already ‘got his’. The 62-year-old man accused of shooting and killing an unarmed teenager on Charleston’s [W Va] East End Monday night was not allowed to have a gun, because of a previous domestic violence conviction.

William Ronald Pulliam allegedly shot 15-year-old James Harvey Means twice in the abdomen with a .380 caliber revolver.

Police said Pulliam showed no remorse after his arrest. He admitted shooting Means and said, “The way I look at it, that’s another piece of trash off the street,” [emphasis mine] according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

After the shooting, Pulliam went to dinner and then to a female friend’s home, according to the complaint, written by Charleston Police Detective C.C. Lioi. Police found the gun allegedly used to kill James Means at the friend’s home.

Charleston police asked federal authorities to determine if the killing meets the definition of a hate crime. Pulliam is white and Means was black.

It would appear the man was not permitted to possess a gun, after a domestic violence incident where he punched and kicked in the stomach his pregnant teenage daughter.

I’m not willing to put the death date on the gravestone of US democracy yet, but I think it clear that the next few years will be critical. This is not business as usual, and once the thinkable options include a twitter war escalating to nuclear war, adding death/failure of US democracy to the list of possibilities isn’t unreasonable.

I’m with you. I didn’t spend most of my adult life in the US Navy to see a bunch of wingnuts pull the country apart without a fight. I affirmed I would uphold and defend the US Constitution, both as a seaman and as a village trustee. That didn’t change because an election went sideways, and as far as I am concerned that is a lifelong affirmation. There was no expiration date in my Affirmations of Enlistment nor my Affirmation of Office.

I think you everyone else here knows what I will be doing.

But even as we resist, we must be congnizant of all of history, including those times that point to what little chance we have at success. Still, as the trailer for the newest bit of Star Wars puts it “Rebellions are built on hope.”

That’s the real task, the one I find hardest, to spark and maintain hope.

DIfferent subject now, my Olympus E-PL1 has been limping along with a broken back screen for about three years now. I have a external VF to look through so it’s been just barely usable.

Today I was looking through KEH and found a used Olympus Pen EP-3 for a small enough amount of money. Still only gets me up to 2011 and has the same sensor as my old camera but it’s got a much improved GPU, much lower start up and lag times, and has a wider ISO range as well. Alas, I ordered too late to have shipping this weekend so I just chose cheap ground and will let it get here when it does.

Put my VF3 on it & my 17/2.8 (35 equiv) and it’ll be almost like having a rangefinder again.

It is. At least Ryan and McConnell have some accountability in that they have to keep their base from rebelling and that protects all of us to an extent. There is also significant opposition including some powerful forces that will not accept the rug being pulled out from under our economy and that includes the social safety net. Walmart, for instance, depends on it to help pay their employees and provide the income that’s spent at their stores.

Trust me, I have no dreams of California secession. But everything they know about where taxes come from, and where they go, and who’s supporting whom is wrong.

I saw today something that said that the counties that went for Hillary produce something like 67% of the economic activity in the US. We also pay most of the taxes, because there are large concentrations of affluent people around the cities, especially those on the Coast. So you find guys making median wage in Bumfuck Arkansas thinks his meager contribution to total US tax revenues pays for California, when in fact the opposite is true.

This has been going on in Little Rock for a long time. It’s reasonable to say it’s been happening since the Central Crisis in ‘57. Most of the wealth is held by the western portion of the city. Those properties don’t pay into the city school district via property taxes. It was specifically negotiated that way before that area was incorporated. Now, the LRSD is in a funding crunch. At least four schools are about to be closed, and charter schools are beginning to take root. The white middle class is fleeing into Saline County to the south. If we’re any indication of what’s to come, then we’re fucked.

What bothers me about this trope, is that as much as the Republicans claim they hate immorality, they secretly condone it.

A few years ago, there was a television network known as PAX. This network specialized in “wholesome” programming. Think Dick Van Dyke’s “Diagnosis: Murder” for most of their broadcast day.

For those curious about the new white supremacist chat app, gab DOT ai, be careful if and when you get an account. I just read through their privacy statement, and basically, you won’t have much. If you use the gab mobile app, it will harvest details about your location, your phone, your IP and other such stuff in order to target ads and “provide services.” So, if you’re intending to sign up with a burner email account, the service can still find your location and IP, unless you opt out or use a VPN. Depending on how paranoid you are, it might be better to observe gab DOT ai from a safe distance.

The founder is a social media advertising tycoon, so it’s safe to assume he will use metadata to target ads and services to gab users. IOW, he intends to make money off the backs of disaffected right wingers.

Their terms of service, oddly enough, sound much like Twitter’s and Facebook’s. So I wonder how “edgy” gab DOT ai intends to be.

I remember the PAX network. It was on our cable lineup back then. Lots of reruns of “wholesome” shows from decades earlier, and some newer ones. I think it was started by some Christian organization. The programming was old and dull, appealing mostly to diehard Christianists and old people. Everyone else watched the new programs on other channels.

I suspect it will become another Ello, a small-scale social medium for a select group of users. I signed up for Ello when it was beta, and it seems to have turned into a platform for artists and artistes to share their work. I don’t even use it.

For gab to be really successful, it’s going to have offer something shiny and new to Twitter users, more than a 300-character limit and a higher tolerance for bigots. It’s a johnny-come-lately.

Yeah, I signed up and still get their spam. Don’t remember the last time I visited. Same with JPG - that at least was interesting when it was a paper magazine.

No, because sometimes it wouldn’t look good. You’d have to specifically add the code to do it. Here’s what it looks like:

<span class=”dropcap”>C</span>limate change is one of the issues…

Trump is too much a fool to be a danger himself. He’s just a diversion from the real dangers: Bannon, Ryan, and McConnell. He’s the squirrel. They will keep Trump occupied with his victory tours and tweets, far away from the levers of actual power. They know Trump will sign whatever they want him to - he’s illiterate so they know he won’t read what he’s signing.

That may be their ulterior motive.

But I find it difficult to fathom them being better con men than him, especially if he’s being set up to play the roll of foil.

Yes, it’s set in his CSS code, but it can be overridden in the Pages (not in regular comments though).

I do Friskies as well. Cheap? What ev, she likes it. I give her a 1/4 cup twice a day. She’s fine.

I also give her 3 of those friskies treats at 4 pm. LOL, I’m anal with my cat.

When I came back from my trip there was a ton of food left in the bowls.

Hmmm. How old? Maybe that has something to do with it.
