On the Amazon tune, anyone watched “Good Girls Revolt”? Well done take on the birth of the Women’s Movement in the late 60’s. I recommend.

If you don’t know Michael Twitty, this article is a good place to start.

[…]

On the gustatory front, Twitty said, food is inherently political.

“The use of the phrase a chicken in every pot is a made-up aphorism,” he said, citing the campaign promise GOP presidential candidate Herbert Hoover made in 1928.

“Kings and queens have promised for centuries, if you follow me, you’ll eat,” said this cultural agent provocateur.

I also made Key Lime Pie, which almost turned into a pie disaster!

I was pouring the filling into the pie crust when I thought Hey, this filling texture is all wrong, it never came out this creamy before. I tasted it and BLEAGH OMG JFC I FORGOT TO PUT IN THE SUGAR!!!!!!

So I *carefully* scraped all the filling out of the crust. Some crumbs got into the filling because I made a graham cracker crust instead of a blind baked crust. Put it all back into the mixer, added the sugar, mixed for 2 minutes and then poured it back into the crust.

This never happened before. I’m getting older LOL.

It’s not “disgusting.” As I recall we ate it. It was just OK, not something that you would want to bake when other pies are much tastier.

We call it an acquired taste; clearly the ex-family member mentioned did not acquire the taste for it. And you are quite correct. My grandmother went through the Depression era and was raised eating (and making) those pies. She continued the tradition and handed it down to her daughters, who have handed it over to the next generation. I was very fortunate to find a Mrs. Fish who enjoys the taste of it, and my son eats it too.

It’s a good one. I am Christian but being one of them ebil librul types, I understand the history of this particular holiday. I enjoy messing with fundamentalists who go on about it by asking how come lambing season isn’t until spring & etc. Of course, I do know some who refuse to celebrate Christmas because they’ve figured out it’s just a taken over pagan celebration but they’re so joyless anyway that, well, like the old joke about the pope who gets to heaven and wants to check the real perfect God’s word and cries while saying “Celebrate! It says Celebrate not celibate!”

Blind Frog Belly White  Nov 25, 2016 • 1:04:52pm

I was reading a article in the Washington Post, about a Brookings study of the counties that went for each candidate. You’ve probably seen it - HRC counties provide >64% of GDP. Not surprising, since metro counties are where the economic activity is, where the rich, the nearly rich, and the better-of-than average live and work.

The other thing it means is that we pay the bulk of the taxes. This means we’ll get the bulk of the tax cuts, which will mean we won’t be subsidizing their sorry asses quite so much.

Of course, there’s also the observation that Trump seems to be staffing his administration from the wealthy elite. You’d think that might irritate the average Trump voter, who thought he was voting for a ‘blue collar billionaire’. But then I remembered that the White Working Class hates those slightly above them in the economic scale. The “elites” they hate are not the ACTUAL elite, but rather people a bit more educated than they are, and a bit more wealthy than they are. Meanwhile they worship the really wealthy with a nauseating servility.

I conclude that eonomic inequlaity doesn’t bother them. They don’t think anyone should make more money than they do, unless they make a WHOLE HELL OF A LOT MORE money than they do. They’d be satisfied with a two-tier economy, as long as people who now make a little bit more than they do get dragged down to their level.

That’s the WWC that we’re told we need to cater to. Resentful, yet servile. Claiming to be anti-elite while worshipping those at the top. Hating their supervisor who had to lay them off, but loving the rich guy who made the decisions that led to it.

Over time, I started rethinking alignments, I came to the conclusion that chaotic evil is actually probably the LEAST dangerous evil. It lacks planning, while lawful evil is more dangerous, as it is more structured, however, it is bound by that structure.

Neutral evil is, to me, the most dangerous, able to maintain a structure to reach goals, yet completely willing to cast it aside, should the need arise.

I actually made a pie this year, first time I’ve ever made a pie: Carmel Apple Cranberry Pie.

It actually turned out okay - the crust was a bit of a visual mess where I had to press the top crust down and seal it with the lower crust but, given how very rarely I bake, I’m quite pleased. Taste was good, a very nice balance of sweet and tart. I definitely think I’ll make it again for next Thanksgiving.

So we should just go on ahead and soft pedal our government willingly doing business with countries they are at odds with. And that would be just like regular citizens and their businesses doing the same.

It wouldn’t be - the citizens would fall under the Logan act, the govt wouldn’t.

re: #104 Blind Frog Belly White

Yeah, I know how you feel. I probably just pissed off some of my friends on Facebook for posting this:

I know a lot of people are angry over the election result and I am one of them.

But giving money to Jill Stein, of all people, for her to engage in some quixotic recount quest is not productive. There are dozens of organizations who could use that money more productively. From the ACLU to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the return on investment of the money you give is to them is going to be far greater than giving it to Stein.

And if you’re going to give to a political candidate or organization, give it to the DNC, DSCC, DCCC, DPVA, or one of Virginia’s statewide candidates for 2017, Ralph Northam or Mark Herring.

And instead of engaging in electoral college fantasies, get involved in your local Democratic committees and groups. Find and recruit friends to help out on future campaigns. Engaging in electoral college fantasies on Facebook is not going to change anything.

Welp, for the sheer heck of it, I just whipped up a regular expression that will handle it if you paste in a YouTube or Vimeo embed code, instead of the video page’s URL.

It looks a little something like this:

<?php
$text = preg_replace_callback(
	'~<iframe(?:.+?)src="https://(?:player|www)\.(?<site>vimeo|youtube)\.com/(?:video|embed)/(?<id>[^?"]*)\??[^"]*"[^>]*></iframe>(?:\s?<p><a href="https://vimeo.com/[^"]*"[^>]*>(?:.+?)</p>)?~i',
	function($matches) {
		if (strcasecmp($matches['site'], 'vimeo') === 0) {
			return 'https://vimeo.com/' . $matches['id'] . "\r\n";
		} else {
			return 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=' . $matches['id'] . "\r\n";
		}
	},
	$text
);
?>

Now there will no longer be random looking bits of iframe code left over. Just a beautiful playable video.

Cowboy Dave is riding off into the sunset.

David A. Clarke, Jr., to meet with Donald Trump Monday

Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke, Jr., is scheduled to meet Monday in New York with President-elect Donald Trump, according to news reports quoting a Trump aide.

Clarke, who runs as a Democrat, was a high-profile surrogate for Trump during the campaign. Clarke has been mentioned as a potential Trump appointee to head the Department of Homeland Security.

“The sheriff has nothing to say,” Clarke’s spokeswoman, Fran McLaughlin, said Friday when asked to confirm Monday’s meeting.

When asked earlier this month if he expected a role in the Trump White House, Clarke told radio host Joe Pags: “I don’t expect anything, I don’t have an entitlement mentality. I told Donald Trump I wanted to help him, because I thought that this country needed his leadership. That being said, if the President asks you to serve, you step up to fulfill that duty. So if he feels that I can help him and he calls on me, sure I’ll accept it, but I’m not expecting anything.”

Now Mrs. FBW is mad at me because she keeps tossing the posts all full of false hope at me, and I already know they’re bullshit, so I’m not receptive. You know the ones I mean - first it was ‘We can sign a petition to the Electors!’, then it was ‘Computer scientists say the election in WI, MI, and PA might have been hacked!’, now it’s KO’s 25th Amendment thing.

It’s like she’s mad at me for knowing about them and knowing why they won’t work, even before she shows them to me. I asked her what she wants me to do, if I already know what it is and already know why it won’t happen. She didn’t have an answer.

This is the sort of thing that makes me think that the problem with “high-stakes testing” in the educational system is that there isn’t enough of it. When you have one chance to do the right thing, and you know what it is, do it or else.

Stein and the junior senator from Vermont assumed they’d have plenty of time to make their gestures of hatred and still do the right thing later. They didn’t, and we’re all going to suffer for it.
