A Fantastic Performance by the Attacca Quartet, on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert

Tom Huizenga | November 18, 2016 - Classical music observers say we’re living in a golden age of string quartets. It’s hard to disagree when you hear the vibrant young players in New York’s Attacca Quartet.

They revere the old school, having recently completed a performance cycle of all 68 string quartets by Joseph Haydn, the man who invented the genre. They also hunger for the new, exploring the music of three living composers each year in a project called Recently Added.

One contemporary composer the group continues to champion is John Adams. The head-banging pulsations of “Toot Nipple” (titled after a character in an Annie Proulx story) contrast with the slippery and funky episodes in “Alligator Escalator.” Adams has said he imagined such a creature waddling up and down the floors of Macy’s department store. The two movements belong to John’s Book of Alleged Dances from 1994.

Next to Adams, Haydn sounds positively genteel, but you needn’t look far to find the composer’s own feisty side. Sunny skies suddenly turn threatening at the turn of a phrase — a trend in Haydn’s time known as Sturm und Drang, or “Storm and Stress” — when moods can swing wildly with impunity.

Measured by the cello’s tick-tock pizzicato, the mood of Michael Ippolito’s Smoke Rings is languid, even a little trippy. Inspired by a 14th-century French song about a smoking society, the composer employs long, slow strokes and light bow pressure for a hazy texture. The music heats up dramatically midway through, only to drift back into the smoke.

The author of the review really nailed where atheists, especially former Muslim ones, take a wrong turn and end up creating hostility instead of helping move things towards the reform they claim they’d like to see.

I figured some of you might find it interesting.

I have little doubt that Donald J. Trump will go down as one of the worst Presidents in American history. The question is, how much damage will he do and how long will it take to fix it?

So that’s all really. I slept most of the day yesterday and about an hour ago UPS showed up with this year’s Godiva chocolates from my boss. I snapped a few photos, nothing fancy, just wanted to record them because there are some new ones I haven’t seen before (the green, orange, and pink ones).

I freaking ate FIVE of them in the space of time it took me to get the photos from my camera into my computer and resize them. Oy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nom, nom, nom..

I worry a bit about the defeatism here. It makes me wonder if we’re spending so much time thinking about all of the possible bad things that could happen, that we get lost in the weeds.

I was talking to some of the people I got to vote. The matriarch is from Colombia; her daughter grew up in the United States, and is a doctor. The doctor’s husband is an artist. A smart family, but doesn’t deeply pay attention to the news. When I started trying to get them to vote, it was a bit disconcerting that even they were saying “I don’t trust Hillary, but I don’t want him in office.” When I talked to them late Thanksgiving, they were a mixture of worried and trying to go on with their lives. One of the things they cautioned was that there wasn’t a whole lot we could do until he gets in office. Then they wanted to talk about something else.

I think my job will be to help these people actually get the news about what’s going on. The balancing act is that they will easily get overwhelmed and tune out. I’ll have to find the right balance of keeping them informed, but reducing it down to the important things. One is making sure the stuff they receive is real, but it will also have to be relevant.

Sigh. Hey Mr. Lancaster, do you know what they call it when a human presumes to tell god what to believe about something? Blasphemy.

Hint: Abortion is never mentioned in the bible. Opposition to it is simply a human custom because early Christians didn’t like Roman practices. But there is nothing in scripture to back it up. You can argue that opposing it is a good thing but you can NOT argue that God opposes it.

I’m quite disgusted at seeing a lot of people on social media cheering the wildfires in Israel and the train derailment in Iran, lauding them as “punishment against the oppressors”.

Because the people in Haifa and its surrounding areas and the people riding on the train in Iran were somehow oppressing others how?

Ironic thing is that Haifa is mostly Arab so these “pro-Palestine” jokers are in fact cheering the destruction that is disproportionally affecting the Arabs they purport to care about. But alas, these same people have no problem backing Bashar al-Assad so I shouldn’t be surprised, I just realized.

But I still would like to have some semblance of optimism for humanity. Why is that so hard of a goal to realize?

There’s got to be pushback on this nepotism and cronyism, and it has to come from a respected Republican (any left?) - and someone willing to take a bullet for the team to speak out, because that person’s career as a Republican would be over in one news cycle.

re: #54 William Lewis

Sigh.

Not only that, but at least one father of the Catholic Doctrine, St Augustine, disagree.

Augustine reversed centuries of Christian teaching in Western Europe, by returning to the Aristotelian Pagan concept of “delayed ensoulment.” He wrote that a human soul cannot live in an unformed body. Thus, early in pregnancy, an abortion is not murder because no soul is destroyed (or, more accurately, only a vegetable or animal soul is terminated). Only abortion of a more fully developed “fetus animatus” (animated fetus) was punished as murder.

If there is something i hate, it’s Christians who have no clue about Christianity. Mind you, the jihadists don’t seem to know the Quran either.

re: #173 VegasGolfer

But aren’t there passages on how to kill babies in the womb?

It’s not clear (to say the least).

In ancient times, the “delayed ensoulment” belief of Aristotle was widely accepted in Greece and Rome. He taught that a fetus originally has a vegetable soul which evolves into an animal soul during the gestation until it is “animated” with a human soul. This “ensoulment” was believed to occur at 40 days after conception for male fetuses, and 90 days after conception for female fetuses. (“History of Animals, Book VII, Chapter 3, 583b.)

The difference was of little consequence, because there were no tests to detect the start of pregnancy or to determine the gender of an embryo. Thus abortions were not condemned if performed early in gestation when the embryo had a vegetable or animal soul. It was only condemned if the abortion was done later in pregnancy that a human soul was destroyed.

(Interestingly, this 90 day limit which is approximately equal to the end of the first trimester) is still with us today. The 40 and 90 day limits also bear some resemblance to the 40 and 80 day periods when a woman was considered ritually impure after birth in Judaism (Leviticus 12:2-6).)

The Jews OTOH were generally opposed to both infanticide and abortion. However an exception existed if the continuation of a pregnancy posed a risk to the life of the pregnant woman or to her other children. In such cases, the pregnant woman was actually obligated to abort the fetus. (The fetus was considered “radef” — a pursuer.) (Philo of Alexandria , “On the Individual Laws”, 3, 20, 110.)

The little Lutheran church across the street from my house? The one that owns one eighth of all the land in my village and pays no taxes?

Let’s talk about power. The last state governor, Dave Heineman, proposed removing the exemption from any church that did not in fact have verifiable charitable works.

Every church - ALL of them in the entire state - protested against the proposed property tax adjustment.

Money is power. All churches get tax-free money.

All churches believe the same book that Westboro or Dylan Roof do, they just interpret it differently. They are the fifth columnists for destructive ideology.

Both these women are convinced their religious views are correct. Regardless of whether your particular church is “pacifistic” it is based on the same unprovable claims any other religious belief is. You know what? If you accept any ol’ unproveable claim, then these women might be right and you are wrong.

Prove they are wrong using only your religious belief.

Amazingly, our ex-governor is a Republican. I am not sure why he came up with that, but he went across the state stumping for it (my guess is that would allow him to lower business taxes).

After a couple weeks promoting his plan though, he bailed out of it, as every church in the state was ready to nail him to a cross made of dollars.

re: #181 William Lewis

They believe in an unprovable thing. I presume by your statement you are also religious, therefore also believe in an unprovable thing.

Which goes back to my question, how do you know your unprovable thing is right and theirs is wrong?

Or is it more likely because those things are in fact unprovable, they are all wrong?

The belief in unprovable things undermines science. Many many so-called good Christians are convinced climate change caused by humans is false, simply because only God can destroy the world.

Many many so-called good Christians believe abortion is murder (even though it isn’t in their holy book). An eight-celled blastocyst in their minds is precisely the same thing as a born infant.

And when a person reasons themselves into believing unprovable things, they cannot be reasoned out of it. So yes, those who believe unprovable things are in fact fifth columnists for others who believe other unprovable things: they all undermine reason.

To be fair, I as an atheist also believe in an unprovable thing — as strictly speaking there is no way to prove that there is no god.

I’m all for minimizing belief in things without evidence, but it does not work to be pure about this. Your position is essentially positivism, which disproved itself.

Not the same. An atheist does not have to prove there is no god. And every Christian is an atheist about every other god ever proposed.

The burden of proof is on the person asserting the claim. Unless and until someone can provide that proof, as a rational person must not accept that claim, any more than the claims of the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus (both of which have hundreds of millions of believers as well).

Why do adults reject the claims of Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny? Because there is no evidence for a socialistic distributor of toys or candy. (:: Any adult who tries to assert the existence of Santa Claus to me will get exactly the same response from me as one who asserts God: Evidence, please.

As and as long as we accept the status quo ante as “practical,” we will never get beyond belief in unprovable things justifying acts of horror.

It is that precise belief in unprovable things that allowed Christians by the millions to vote for Donald Trump. “Well he’s a flawed human being, but God works in mysterious ways.”

Reason and logic are the best tools ever devised by humans to determine what is true and what is not. “Practical” is not part of either.

If we throw those two tools away for reasons of practicality, we might as well just usher in a new Dark Age. Hound scientists like Galileo (wait, we’re doing that now). Take the rights of religious minorities (wait, we’re doing that now too). Go to war over whose unprovable deity is mightier (wait, we do that too).

If we throw those two tools away for reasons of practicality, we might as well just usher in a new Dark Age.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I was referring to the burden-of-proof rule as a practical matter. Same with Occam’s Razor. So, yes, rational thought and science has a lot to do with what is practical.

I agree though that we need more rational thought, not less.

Sigh.

Abortion does not need to be mentioned as a crime category different from “murder”, so whether or not the term appears in the Bible is neither here, nor there. The only question is *whether* it is murder, and since the Bible is a book of contradictions, the cherry-picking believers will choose the position that best suits them. One could turn to the OT verses appearing to describe no death penalty for an accidentally induced miscarriage, or one could turn to the verses appearing to describe a fetus personhood.

I’ll bet the woman in the meme shown on the left is patriotic, a good citizen, kind to her friends and neighbours, and I don’t ever want to meet her. She is no different than the woman on the right, just believes in a different unprovable claim. They are both atheists about each others beliefs.

I don’t deny the humanity of a person of faith: I question their ability to reason effectively. (Faith is not the beginning of knowledge, it is the end of it. No one “of faith” can be reasoned out of a position they were propagandised into.)

A person can believe in a god and also accept the validity of the scientific method and any conclusions drawn thereby.
If the qualifying factor in how you perceive their ability to reason centres on their acceptance or non-acceptance of a divinity of some kind, I have to tell you, a great many scientists will fail your test.

If one starts with the position that “abortion is murder,” then its logical conclusion is a woman seeking an abortion is contracting for a murder.

That is the endgame of the so-call pro-life wingnuts, and Mr. Trump let the cat out of the bag over the summer when he thought there should be some sort of punishment for women seeking an abortion.

It is the reasoning behind the “Periods for Pence” protest on Facebook with women calling in the details of their monthly cycles. It is the reason that so-called “foetal murder” laws have been used against women instead. It is all based on religious belief because there is nothing rational about religious belief.

Nope. Unless turkey soup counts as “the bottle.”

Rather than the ad-hominem (hitting the bottle), how about addressing the substance of my claim? Explain how supporting “this” narrative of unprovable claims is somehow different than “that” version of unprovable claims.

How is the Christian woman in the meme different than some other Christian who would not do such things, both basing their positions on unprovable things?

209
Nyet  Nov 26, 2016 • 3:04:48am

Of course, since traditional Christianity is not a Sola Scriptura religion (sorry, Protestants), and the Apostolic Tradition has about as much force as the Scripture (and indeed, the Scripture has to be interpreted in the light of the Apostolic Tradition), and the AT is a nebulous concept without clear limitations, this makes things even less clear WRT abortion and many other issues.

It still doesn’t address the claim.

Plenty of good Christians that never would tote an AR-15 holding a Bible and posing in front of an American flag have told me I am evil, I am immoral, would not let my child play with theirs because we were evil atheists, insist I cannot be patriotic nor should be a citizen (my president during my Naval service, thanks GHW Bush), &c.

From my vantage, the only thing I see is the degree to which they wish to enforce their beliefs on others: Some not so much, others want a bloody theocracy.

Well, in the Anglican tradition, that is rather why we add that third leg of Reason to Scripture and Tradition. It take all three to point at truth and is often the way to find out how badly scriptures are misunderstood.

I do understand that it is not an insult. It is a diversion by using an attack or an insult to divert from the substance of a claim or conversation.

Since the insults (two) directed at me were both without substance other than the insults themselves, I believe that qualifies (discredit the messenger through two insults rather than addressing the substance of my claim).

Neither it is that. It is a statement of the form “you are A, therefore you’re wrong about B”, where A is a description of the persons’ real or alleged personal characteristics. E.g., “he is a serial murderer, therefore his proof of that theorem is wrong”.

I have notably not used such an argument, hence I have not used an ad hominem.

Yeah, had his guards not been so afraid to enter his room in the morning, it’s possible his life could’ve been saved; as it was, they didn’t enter until around 2200 (10 pm) to find him lying on the floor soaking in his own urine, unable to even speak.

St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) considered abortion murder, but only if it affected an “animated” fetus. Then Pope Sixtus V (1471-1484) issued a Papal bull “Effraenatam” in 1588 which threatened those who carried out abortions at any stage of gestation with excommunication. But Pope Gregory XIV (1535-1591) revoked said bull shortly after taking office in 1591. He reinstated the “quickening” test, which he determined happened 116 days (about 17 weeks) into pregnancy. That stood until 1869 when Pope Pius IX (1792-1878) reversed policies one again dropping the distinction between the “fetus animatus” and “fetus inanimatus.” Then Pope Leo XIII (1878-1903) issued a decree in 1886 that prohibited all procedures that directly killed the fetus, even if done to save the woman’s life.

The tolerant approach to abortion which had prevailed in the Roman Catholic Church for previous centuries ended then. That’s only 130 years ago, a very short time in terms of Church history.

A comment on another blog I read about Trump and his lack of intelligence briefings:

Perhaps the content of the daily briefings is so shocking and surprising that he refuses to believe them, and simply won’t bother with one again.

“Lizard people? Do you mean people who keep lizards as pets, or people who are actually lizards?”

“The latter, Mr. President-Elect.”

Mr. Trump attempted to remember the different between former and latter, and resorted to counting on his tiny fingers, which didn’t help but was bound to have a fifty-fifty chance of being accurate. Either option seemed implausible. Finally, he spoke. “Do people really do that? How do you cuddle up with a lizard?”

“No, Mr. President-Elect, the people themselves are lizards. And they are clearing out the humans from the Middle East by getting them to fight among themselves.”

“And then they will hold us hostage by controlling the oil! They’ll be rich.”

“Sir, they appear to not be motivated by money at all. They just want warm rocks to sun themselves on.”

Mr. Trump looked at the agent running the briefing with a mixture of horror and disgust. “Not motivated by money? Don’t talk to me like I’m an idiot. Get out of here! Go away! I never want to see you again. You’re fired!”

IIRC, there is nothing in the Bible specifically about abortion. There’s the “shalt not kill” bit, which the following chapters all seem to ignore. So, I’m not terribly convinced.

There sort of is; in Numbers 5:11-31, if a pregnant woman’s husband suspects he’s not the father, there’s a ritual and a potion that if she’s a cheater it will make her miscarry. The Lord very specifically told Moses to put this into the law.

Also, in Exodus 21:22, if a woman is pregnant woman is assaulted in such a way as to cause a miscarriage but she is otherwise unharmed, the attacker has to pay a fine to her husband. This penalty for killing a fetus is far, far lower than the penalty for killing a human being.

Has anyone checked out Mark Mothersbaugh’s art exhibition Myopia yet? I saw the dual museum exhibit (at his hometown Akron Art Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Modern Art) back in August… and it was AMAZING. It does his work - and that of DEVO - the justice it deserves.

the equation Christianity = Absolute Right to Life is a relatively modern one

It grew up about the same time as the Pentecostal sects, IIRC. And that papal encyclical mentioned above contributed to the growth of the anti-abortion crusade. However, while the RCC seems to care genuinely about the lives of babies after they are born, the Religious Right of the Protestant variety seems rather to blame poor kids for their situation, and walks away from them.

Now that he’s been elected, I gather that Trump has made sure no one dare take his mobile phone so he can tweet to his heart’s content.

Thanksgiving holiday events are over as my brother and his girlfriend are headed back to the Great White Not-Quite-North (Rochester, NY) after spending the holiday here.

The Feline Overlords were very gracious hosts. And I have a lot of leftovers and uneaten food items to work through now (bread, a bit of turkey, turkey rice soup, spanikopita, sweet potato pie.) Oddly enough all of the beer is gone.

Up until the late 1970’s, evangelicals were fine with abortion. Opposing it was “a papist thing.” But when the religious right realized that supporting segregation was no longer a winning political strategy, and they needed something new to organize around, that’s when they had their sudden epiphany about how much they loved embryos after all.

I’ve always thought the same about evangelical type religions. For teaching about “The God of Love” they need to have an enemy to hate to get real motivated. For a religion that talks about correcting your own individual sins and demons they need to have others to call sinners and demons.

Totally screwed up thinking and really not about Christianity at all in my opinion.

I remember the Catholics being very upset with Roe vs Wade and our priest saying he thought that one of the Catholic justices who voted for it should be excommunicated.

Then when I started attending college, the place was teeming with Born Again Christians and The Navigators and similar movements and they often had Pro Life stands set up on campus, a buddy at Arizona State used to go around to stores, collect boxes of used coat hangers and just drop them off next to their displays.

“Because we had not uncovered any actionable evidence of hacking or outside attempts to alter the voting technology, we had not planned to exercise this option ourselves, but now that a recount has been initiated in Wisconsin, we intend to participate in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides,” attorney Marc Elias wrote.

So there’s that.

re: #303 Myron Falwell (no relation)

Notably, though, Clinton did not initiate the recount herself, and Elias wrote that the campaign had not planned to, because it had found no actionable evidence of hacking.

The Clinton campaign had investigated the matter extensively. Elias wrote the campaign had “lawyers and data scientists and analysts combing over the results to spot anomalies” and had also “monitored and staffed the post-election canvasses  — where voting machine tapes are compared to poll-books, provisional ballots are resolved, and all of the math is double checked from election night.” He wrote that the campaign had also met with outside experts and “attempted to systematically catalogue and investigate every theory that has been presented to us within our ability to do so.”

Now that a recount effort was underway, Elias wrote that it was “important” to participate in the proceedings. He played down the idea that the recount would change the outcome.

“We do so fully aware that the number of votes separating Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in the closest of these states —  Michigan  —  well exceeds the largest margin ever overcome in a recount,” Elias wrote. “But regardless of the potential to change the outcome in any of the states, we feel it is important, on principle, to ensure our campaign is legally represented in any court proceedings and represented on the ground in order to monitor the recount process itself.”

Brian Fallon, a spokesman for the Clinton campaign, rejected the notion that the campaign’s actions might suggest to some that it was not accepting the election results.

I hate to think of some of the outcomes if your scenario plays out too. A Muslim shooting someone, even if protected by stand your ground law, will not go over with the same people that started the problem. That is what scares me. Everyone is so touchy and then your have the Trump License to be Like Trump. Just a bad mixture.
