But Bevin, who opposes restrictions to the 2nd Amendment that provides gun rights, said “the answer is not necessarily a legislative one.”

“You have a cultural problem, you have a spiritual problem, you have an economic problem. That’s what you have, period,” he said. “People who want to pretend it’s something that can be legislated, some more government rules are going to fix this, are delusional. We don’t need more government rules to fix this. We need to address the root causes of this.”

Bevin added: “It’s going to take a community that does some serious soul-searching and asks itself the hard questions. It takes ownership of this and heals itself from within.”

His plan, essentially, is to blame the black community and tell them to fix it themselves.

no snark.

I’m sure they are. Honestly, it’s never going to happen but our lack of action on gun laws is such cowardice. I’d love for a Dem official to go tell Wayne LaPierre to fuck off on one of his guns. Let the gun nuts get the same hatred that they’ve been sending to anyone who even considers sensible legislation on their beloved gunz.

There was an incident in China around the time of Newtown. The guy had a knife. No one was killed. Sure, people ultimately do kill people but guns make it easier. That’s why guns exist.

Trump claims a “deal” was struck with Carrier to save ~1000 jobs. Of course, NYT immediately blares it as “breaking news” and a “a powerful tactical strike that will rally his base” from their front page. No details on what this supposed deal is, other than a promise (a tiny pinky swear?) to cut regulations and taxes on a company that, according to the article, already receives 10% of its revenue from taxpayers as a defense contractor. Interesting how when unions negotiate with corporations, it’s anti-capitalist, but when Trump does it he’s the working man’s hero.

The flag does not represent the military or veterans. As a veteran, I despise it when someone says: Disrespecting the flag is disrespecting our veterans!!eleventy1!1!22!uno!!1!

The flag represents the ideals that the USA stands for, as enshrined in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, and of all those people who have gone before us for the last 240 years to try and make this a place that upholds the ideals of the Preamble of the Constitution.

Disrespecting veterans is sabotaging the VA. Disrespecting the military is sabotaging the ideals for which the military has stood and oftimes given health or lives to defend (even if that defence was not always put to the right use or combat was for the wrong reasons). Disrespect of both is to denigrate what the purpose of our service was for.

I affirmed I would uphold and defend the Constitution (both in the military and in civilian government) against enemies foreign and domestic, not the flag. If we abolished the flag tomorrow that would not change one iota of my affirmation.

I am tired of wingnuts and conservative politicians telling me who is not respecting me. I can figure that out for myself, thanks.

So now that the voters in this state voted on Governor Rickett’s personally paid for referendum to restore the death penalty here after the Unicameral repealed it and overrode his veto (yay us? /s), now the governor wants a secrecy law for executing people with drugs, because two of the three drugs required by Nebraska law are not available.

Called the village hall to leave a message for the clerk, the fax machine is hooked up to the line, so I couldn’t leave a message. I’ll just mosey over in the morning I guess.

Barfworthy article from Wonkette about an alleged statement by Donald Trump written into an article which the editors excised from the final copy (apparently because the so-called liberal media has to continue to try and normalise Donald Trump’s behaviour).

wonkette.com

Relevant section of barf-worthiness hidden here, excised portion of the paragraph is between the em dashes:

Jared Kushner, our Tom Hagen, who married Trump’s stunning daughter Ivanka — “Can I ask you something?” Trump asked someone I know, about his then-13-year-old kid, “Is it wrong to be more sexually attracted to your own daughter than your wife?” — has lately lost some of this Boy Scout aura. It turns out Kushner’s admission to Harvard was preceded by his father’s $2.5 million pledge.

Trump’s Potential Treasury Secretary Headed A ‘Foreclosure Machine’

Rex Schaffer, 86, and his wife Rose were among those who lost their homes, in a OneWest foreclosure. After living nearly 50 years in their home in La Puente, Calif., the Schaffers took a home equity loan but struggled to make the payments. They say they qualified three times for a government assisted modification, but OneWest failed to modify the loan.

Facing threats that their home would be auctioned off, the Schaffers finally got through to a OneWest vice president. According to Rex Shaffer, the VP said, “I’m going to get you a 60-day extension on the sale date, so we can work this thing out.” That was on Feb. 17, 2011. But the next day, the Schaffers’ house was sold without their knowledge. “We didn’t even know it — didn’t have the faintest idea,” Rex Shaffer says.

They voted for Donald Trump, but Rose Schaffer says they’re praying he doesn’t choose Mnuchin as his Treasury secretary. “If he can’t run his own little bank,” she asks, “how can he handle a large thing for the United States?

Back when Bill Joy wrote vi it was an insanely great improvement over ed and other such line editors. But then when Stallman ported EMACS over from the lispm world, vi became just as obsolete to me. I just could not grasp the subtleties of emacs at all. vim, as a simplistic command-line interface, always just made more sense to me somehow. I’ve worked a great deal of magic with nought more than vim and an 80-character terminal.

I mean that’s part of why I really don’t have a whole lot of desire to give the white working class voters who supported him who have supported Democrats in the past the whole woe is us bullshit that some want to. Clinton, Obama, and Democrats told you what this guy was but you were too ignorant to notice that he was a snake. I try to be a kind hearted person but my heart’s out of sympathy for people who do stupid shit like this and then expect us to “understand” them when they never attempt ot understand other people.

I liked VMS Edit.

That was nice. But then, VMS was a really nice system all around. I miss my Vaxstation…

re: #157 Skip Intro

I have actually had a job that required using ed (almost 20 years ago). The system was antiquated to say the least, but also still cool in some ways. Except for needing to use a line editor :) It didn’t take me long to figure out how to get a vi environment up and running instead, but for a while it was just edlin.
