Saturday Shred: Nick Johnston, “Poison Touch”

Tone, taste and style

YouTube

One of the new up-and-coming guitar slingers in Nick Johnston, who plays with a minimum of flash but lots of taste and style. His restraint makes the moments when he does cut loose much more impressive.

Nick’s new album is Remarkably Human, and I highly recommend it to connoisseurs of fine guitar playing.

I am a connoisseur of any fine musician’s playing. I am continually impressed with your ability to dig up these excellent musicians for our pleasure.

How anyone thinks that woman is ugly or trashy is beyond me. I think not only is Mrs. Obama a beautiful woman but a great person too. Her and President Obama are class and man I’m going to miss having them as our first couple these next four years. I’ll miss their daughters too. Sasha and Malia are two impressive young women with two great parents who just happen to be the President and First Lady. They’re going to do well in this world.

After eight years of vituperous, vile, vicious (and other negative words starting with “v”) venom thrown at Mrs. Obama and her family, she has more than earned a rest.

So the stupid right wing thing going now is that Tim Kaine “blamed” the OSU attack on guns. Uh initial reports were that were a gun man and Kaine when it was revealed that the man had a knife quickly retracted. Yeah that damn Tim Kaine going by what we were hearing from police, what a dumbass. Yes, I agree Charles, that’s what has me honestly more upset than the fact Trump won. Am I disappointed that many of our fellow Americans voted for this idiot? You bet I am but I’m worried like hell about the normalizing of alt-right racists. Bannon is in the WH. Richard Spencer was at the RNC. The biggest racist assholes in this country have a sympathetic ear in the Executive Branch now and they see it as their permission slip to be as nasty to anyone as they can. I can’t go a day without reading about some minority being harassed while the person yells Trump or uess their support of Trump as rationale. But hey wasn’t the cast of Hamilton just awful to poor widdle Mike Pence?

Need to look more at this but I’m hearing there are polls that suggest that those who voted out of concern for the economy favored Clinton over Trump so that sort of puts the economic anxiety thing aside a little IMO. Those who voted based off immigration and terrorism concerns favored Trump.

It’s okay for someone not to understand the nature our relationship with China and Taiwan. It’s not okay however to act like Trump did a normal thing here and it’s certainly not right to repeat the lie that he was just accepting a congraulatory call from President Tsai Ing-wen. Off-topic, road, or even sanity,

I just ate a can of Campbell’s Alphabet Soup. I discovered trying to spell “fascist” won’t fit on a spoon.

After I ate my soup, I washed out my pan, and there were three letters that came out of the pan and went down the drain: B, I, and N.

I told my wife I’d killed part of the alphabet and we could never use those letters again: Bins would now be tubs, she can’t write her name any more, &c. She is still laughing her head off at the idea “I destroyed the alphabet.”

Polygon:

Can Supergirl survive Trump?

The night after the US election, like a lot of people, I was looking for some light escapism. It seemed the perfect time to catch up Supergirl; what better show to hide away from the state of the world with than one that’s been hailed for its optimism and progressive values since the release of its first trailer? I’d fallen behind on the series, so I ended up starting with an episode that had first aired in September. “Welcome to Earth” revolved around a female, Hispanic president signing an immigration reform bill into law.

Suddenly, I was right back in the real world. What had been cautiously optimistic when the episode had premiered just a few weeks before was now upsettingly fantastical. In the wake of Donald Trump’s win, a pro-immigration woman of color being elected president seemed less realistic than the alien trying to kill her.

As I kept watching, the disparity between Supergirl’s world and our own grew wider. Alex Danvers’ coming out story made me think about the danger LGBTQ people will be in under a cabinet that universally opposes their rights. An African-American James Olsen fighting crime in a hoodie and face scarf made me think of all the Black men and boys who’d been murdered for wearing the same. And while CEO Cat Grant may have left, the series’ commitment to continue featuring women in positions of power just made me think about how rarely they filled them in reality.

The bigger puzzle in my mind is what happened on the right. The nationalist / ethnic purity resurgence is the thing to consider now imho. Coping skills. How to throw a wrench in the suspension of reality and facts. Use the law crossing every T. Find our friends inside the system. John Bolton, who was U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during former President George H.W. Bush’s administration, met Friday with Trump. Bolton, who emerged as a contender for the next secretary of state, had advocated for “an upgrade” of Taiwan’s relations with the U.S.

“The new U.S. administration could start with receiving Taiwanese diplomats officially at the State Department; upgrading the status of U.S. representation in Taipei from a private ‘institute’ to an official diplomatic mission; inviting Taiwan’s president to travel officially to America; allowing the most senior U.S. officials to visit Taiwan to transact government business; and ultimately restoring full diplomatic recognition,” according to a commentary article Bolton wrote for The Wall Street Journal this year.

This woman’s story seems more geared to selling books rather than reality:

I Am a Surrendered Wife (goes to the BBC)

The gist of the article about her is that as a self-described feminist, she took control of all aspects of her husband’s life (thereby denying him agency).

Her solution was to give that up, give him control of the family finances, stop “nagging,” &c.

Yeah. Amazing how not letting your husband know what drives you up the wall instantly solves all family and relationship problems.
There is of course, something to the idea of not trying to run one’s husband’s life, a.k.a. basic respect, but the idea that women magically control the dynamics of a relationship by backing off and letting the man set the rules and the pace is a bunch of hokum.
How about respect, honesty and flexibility on both sides?

It’s basic relationship dynamics. Just as with friends, married partners need to treat each other like human beings - like how we would want to be treated. I can’t walk all over my wife, and she can’t nag me to death. They teach that in the very first session of pre-marital counseling. Along with, “Always be honest.”

There are things my wife is good at (finances, planning, plumbing, &c) and things I am good at (housework, yard work, driving [she is terrified of driving after a horrible wreck she was involved in). That doesn’t mean either she is running my life, or me running hers. We consult each other on what we’re going to do because it is courteous and considerate.

Liking one’s spouse is at least as important as loving them. With Mr. C. it was “like at first sight” and about 2 months later that I realized I loved him as well.

I got into a brief exchange on Facebook with a guy who said he ‘liked the ballsy move.’ I said that the One China approach had worked for better than 40 years, and he replied that I was ‘another one who has it all figured out - like I give a shit what you think lol’ (that’s verbatim). This gy is a friend of a friend, in his 50s.

You simply cannot discuss anything in an adult manner with these people. They think it’s just awesome that Trump is running roughshod over diplomacy. Try pointing out that it might not be a good idea and they react like 12 year olds.

I told the guy he was an asshole and bailed. There was no point in discussing anything with that dude, he didn’t want discussion. He wanted the chance to throw insults.

I watched it. The ending was … unexpected. I won’t give any spoilers, but the video does show us how potential shooters can be hidden in plain sight.

FWIW, schoolteachers are expected to be on the alert for troubled teens, and to act in loco parentis if there are signs of real danger to the kid or his (or her, less often) schoolmates. In practice, this is not so easy, considering the typical middle/high schoolteacher has at least 150 students come through the classroom door every day, and some schools don’t even have a full-time nurse or counselor. From my own experience, unless a teacher “connects” with a student in some way, it’s easy to miss all the warning signs of impending trouble until it’s almost too late. One of my students attempted suicide (not at school). Another carried around a fast food soft drink cup spiked with vodka throughout the day. Another got into some heavy prescription drug abuse, and nearly died from an OD while out partying with friends. All three seemed pretty normal otherwise, but each was going through some kind of family trauma or clinical depression. I’ve lost track of the attempted suicide guy, but he got his life back on track. The drinker got help, and is now happily married with two kids. The OD girl got clean, and became a counselor (even while still in high school) for kids with drug abuse problems.

I’ve only lost one student to suicide, thankfully. A really bright young man with a promising future, loving parents, who after graduating college, wrote a note to his parents and killed himself in his bedroom. No one had picked up on his mental state.

Though I now teach college students, and am no longer in loco parentis legally, I still instinctively keep an eye on my students as much as I can. Chinese students are under even more pressure than American kids are.
