Video: Mike Pence Defends Trump’s Lie About “Millions” of Illegal Votes, Calls It “Very Refreshing”

Politics • Views: 42,642

If you remember Mike Pence’s debate with Tim Kaine, you know he has absolutely no compunction about telling blatant lies with a big smile. And here’s video of his appearance today on ABC’s This Week, actually defending Donald Trump’s outright lie that “millions” of people voted illegally in the presidential election.

Pence says this kind of dishonesty is “very refreshing.”

Remember when some people thought Pence would actually stand up to Trump’s nuttery? Yeah not happening. Reince has gone along with this bullshit too. They have no proof of this but they know it’s what their pathetic base wants to hear so they spout it.

Just reinforcing the ‘facts are not facts’ thinking.

It’s “refreshing” The President Donald gets to say whatever is on his mind and also gets to change that mind.

Therefore nothing means anything. A persistent state of defining with no finding. So, he never actually said it!

Will anyone ever know what The President Donald actually thinks about anything?

Or, is this government flying by the sizeable seat of his pants…Winging it for Wingnuts Way™?

Hence why I support Dr. Stein sticking it to their false narrative.

As for Christmas presents, I’ll see about getting something for my wife when we are in Sacramento. I have never bought my wife a present in California before.

So we can look forward to 4 years of:

Media: “President Trump, this is an absolute lie.”

Trump: “No it’s not, it’s the truth because I say it is.”

Pence: “I think it’s very refreshing.”

Media: “Oh, well, in that case, we’ll entertain that you think it’s the truth.”

I am not sure how those work. I know when a company came by peddling selling E-readers to the public library, she sent out a survey to the village asking if the village was interested in the library obtaining E-readers. The overwhelming response was “spend the money on more books.”

If an E-reader requires wireless connexion to the Internet, it wouldn’t work here to download books. (I really am behind on the tech stuff.)

I’m mostly familiar with Kindles, because that’s what I’ve stuck with, and there are ways to transfer the books onto a Kindle without needing a wireless connection to the Internet. It’s easier with wifi, of course, but doable without.

It definitely doesn’t require an internet connection to use.

But if your wife reads fast and you guys travel, it’s a lot easier to bring enough books along on the trip when they don’t take up extra space in the bag. (This was my problem. Two week trip = minimum of 20 books.)

You had me at one block. I used to commute to D.C from Western Loudoun County.

Yow! That’s a long drive.

My commute to the village hall is also only one block (the library and the village hall are the same building).

Our car only gets a workout when we have to go out of town for something or we take a vacation trip. (We don’t often leave town more than twice a month unless there is an appointment for something, like the VA or the vet.)

Generally, you need wifi to download Kindle books, but there’s a way around that.
You can download the books to your hard drive and then transfer to your Kindle via USB.

One good thing about ereaders is that you can get free books from places like BookBub.

Oh, I didn’t drive. I went to a bus stop which took me to a Metro station. Then took the Metro to the stop near my office and then walked another 15 minutes. My commute now is pretty good. 40 minute drive. Not great but not horrible either.

Anymouse  Dec 4, 2016 • 2:52:16pm

An interesting (well, to me anyway) thing about our village hall/public library:

The library used to be on the main drag through town, but the building was falling apart. The village hall used to be right next to the UP railroad tracks, where coal trains coming by every few minutes shook the building apart.

The current building is the three-room schoolhouse, which the village disestablished in 2005.

The village clerk applied to UP for a development grant (the railroad has them for towns along its routes) to upgrade the school to become a village hall and library. UP granted the entire amount necessary.

The building took a couple years to overhaul, adding several new features. We moved into the building in 2014, and most of the townfolk pitched in to move the library from its old building to its current location.

The 38-mile commute I could make at 45 minutes in the morning - there were zero stops if I hit all the lights, and freeways comprised 2/3 of the route. On the way home? An hour was a great day, but 1:10 or 1:15 was more typical.

When I lived on the oceanfront in Virginia Beach it was the same: west was city all through Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Portsmouth, north was twenty minutes to the Chesapeake Bay, south was ten minutes to farmland and thirty minutes to the ferry crossing in North Carolina, and east was a one-block walk to the Atlantic Ocean.

Here, east sixteen miles takes me to the next town (64 people) - a city is a couple hours away. North is sand roads to Alliance sixty miles away. South is fifty miles to Sidney. Northwest is sixty miles to Scottsbluff. There’s a whole lot of nuthin’ around here.

Nope, they’re not cowards. Party first. It takes real intestinal fortitude to put up with this and still promote him as “the better choice” over Hillary Clinton.

I always took it the other way. Their craven lust for power gives the illusion of strength, but at heart, they are truly cowards just like their leader Trump.

Ana Navarro is probably the only one out there who is showing true intestinal fortitude in her defiance… especially in endorsing, supporting and voting for Hillary.

It should be. I sincerely hope there will be charges filed. This didn’t have to happen and was preventable in so many ways.

(Just like so much of 2016, sigh.)

I’m talking to a lot of friends about this today, many of whom were involved with raising money for the victims of the Station Nightclub fire in Rhode Island (I did a few benefit concerts for the families and survivors), and they all agree that the owner of that warehouse was every bit as negligent as the Station’s owner, who decided to save a few bucks and install flammable soundproofing in the club instead of the fire retardant stuff. If he had done that, most of the 100 dead would have gotten out alive. And that guy paid the price for his negligence.

The owner of that warehouse, in a fair world, will be held liable.

I would note my Republican Senator Ben Sasse, who way back in February said he could never support Donald Trump on Facebook, then had his post re-printed in every newspaper in the state. Though he said he would not support Hillary Clinton, he was quite firm in his stance against Donald Trump.

He took a bunch of heat for that here; when he came recently to our county seat to discuss issues with constituents, he was booed, mocked, and insulted.

The owner of that warehouse, in a fair world, will be held liable.

Well. Paid the price as in “pleaded no contest and served a short prison sentence with the majority suspended and time off for good behavior.” Probably the same amount of time, if not less, than the guy who actually lit the pyrotechnics and took full responsibility for his actions (plead guilty against the recommendation of his lawyers, apologized to the families).

I think one of the two brothers (co-owners) didn’t serve time at all.

The owner of the warehouse here is a Vietnamese woman, apparently. She was leasing it out to someone else (the guy who has been mis-identified as the owner in a few places) who then subleased it to several artists in addition to living there himself. That guy is the one responsible for the actual development of the space into a fire hazard. (That being said, I do not believe that this absolves the owner of responsibility either, just want to be clear here.)

I watched the video from the Station fire last night with the sound off. (It can be found on Youtube. I am not going to link it. The comments I have read are that the sound in particular is disturbing. It was hard enough to just watch it.)

And then I got down the Wikipedia disasters rabbit hole and went to bed far too late.

I ended up reading about the concept of “crowd turbulence” and a scientific article looking at the crowd disaster from the Love Parade in Germany in 2010. That was interesting. Crowd movement physics where at different densities, human movement behavior can be defined as similar to a gas, a liquid (complete with waves which can you see in the aerial footage from the disaster), or at the extreme, a solid like rice and sand.

Why Rightwingers play this “free speech” game is beyond me given how their sites heavily censor comments. Try posting anything pro-Obama/Clinton/Democratic Party on Red State or one of the other RWNJ blogs. You’ll be banned immediately.

Because:

1) They want businesses to be able to ban people for race, gender, and especially religion.

2) They want censorship to mean “I can’t say what I want on your private platform.” Hence all the butthurt when someone is (rarely) banned on Twitter for rape threats or death threats, why Chuck C. Johnson was so butthurt about his Twitter account being suspended, and why Milo Yiannopolis actually petitioned President Obama for his blue checkmark on Twitter to be returned.

Projection, always. They want to be able to ban those things, so they whinge about “liberal media” or “liberals” “censoring” their speech.

It wasn’t liberals or the media that called for “opening up libel laws” to sue media outlets. That was their guy.

When I went into dystopian jerk mode last week, had Mr. Johnson banned me from this Website I would not have cried “censorship.” Even as lousy as I was behaving here I understand the difference between censorship (government interference with speech) and private property (Mr. Johnson’s Website).

The same is not true of those who frequent sites like GOPUSA, RedState, &c. My wife frequents RedState (mostly to see what the wingnuts are up to), and she is quite amazed at the amount of projection and butthurt those folk have when someone won’t let them come into their own space (like LGF or Wonkette) and crap all over it while not allowing the same.

BREAKING: 5 Of 9 Voting Machines In Wisconsin County Found TAMPERED With (DETAILS)

Bipartisan Report (the source here) is not known for well-sourced and researched articles (they more often publish opinion than fact).

In the case of the voting machine issue, that remains unproven. Bipartisan Report is reporting it as fact (remember, facts don’t matter).

What is known:
snopes.com

Origin:On 2 December 2016, Daily News Bin reported that “recount officials” in the state of Wisconsin discovered seals that showed signs of tampering on five of the voting machines in St. Croix county:

With the Wisconsin statewide recount now fully underway, designated election observers have been monitoring the hand recounts of the election officials. Many of the observers who have been designated on behalf of third party candidate Jill Stein are sharing their first hand recount experiences on her official website. Most notable among them: one observer who reports that five of the nine voting machines in her county had tampered seals - and she posted visual evidence to prove it.

The observer, named Wendy, has been observing the recount in St. Croix County. According to the state’s official election website, that county is currently doing both a hand recount and a machine recount. That’s what makes it notable that Wendy spotted the broken seals on five of the nine machines in question. Based on the photographs she posted to Stein’s official campaign website, the broken seals themselves come with the warning label that “Removal of seal voids warranty.” Take a look at one of her photos below[.]

The post linked to images from the web site of Green Party candidate Jill Stein. The site hosted “WI Observer Reports,” filed not by recount officials, but by laypeople who volunteered to observe post-election recount efforts.

“Wendy” in St. Croix county submitted a very brief statement, along with photographs of two machines she attested were among five with broken seals:

Five of the nine machines being used in the recount have tampered seals. Photos of two are attached. Photo of seal, followed by photo of serial number.

The article goes on at Snopes, but “Wendy” is not a credible source.

Anymouse  Dec 4, 2016 • 4:05:58pm

Moreover, there is a question of fakery about the broken seals:

Both posts lacked details about the process of sealing voting equipment in Wisconsin or elsewhere, evidence the machines were photographed in St. Croix during recount efforts, or any information above and beyond those brief remarks. Dates, precise locations, and the circumstances under which the images were obtained were unknown. The site linked to the Wisconsin Elections Commission’s web site page [PDF], noting that St. Croix County was undertaking a “hand count” and “optical scan”, but it was not immediately whether clear voting equipment was being examined as part of that effort.

The images purportedly showed two of the five machines, and their role in the recount efforts was not described. The images depicted two seals that read “REMOVAL OF LABEL VOIDS WARRANTY,” and while both images depicted worn labels, neither was removed.

Another inconsistency about the site’s claim was that it appeared to show a different type of machine from the type reported by the Wisconsin Elections Commission web site. The site hosts a list of voting equipment used per municipality, [PDF] showing that although counties other than St. Croix used the ES&S brand of equipment listed, St. Croix used only Dominion and Sequoia products (emphasis mine)

Finally:

While images apparently showed two of five voting machines in St. Croix County, Wisconsin with tampered seals, the images were taken by a private individual and did not constitute a report from “recount officials.” The voting equipment shown was not the voting equipment the state of Wisconsin reported was used in that jurisdiction. Labels affixed to the machine were worn but not removed, and the labels stated that their removal voided the warranty, not that it disqualified the machine’s tabulations.

A warranty seal is NOT THE SAME THING as “This machine is not valid for votes or voting”. It just means what it says: Someone popped the screws to do some work on it.

Perhaps the machines were out of warranty. If someone tells you you need to install a replacement part, you will do it, seal or not.

If people want to be certain, the states should do what their weights-and-measures departments do, which is to check, test, and verify that grocers’ scales work and are accurate. That is the only context I know where breaking a seal invalidates equipment.

It’ll never happen.

My understanding of voting machines is the parts that are critical to an accurate count are sealed by the state.

Warranty seals are not those. They are no different than the warranty seal on my laptop (mess with this and you’ll pay for repairs). The person posting the photos (depicted in the Snopes article) is conflating the two.

Actually, the hypocrisy is not shocking (at least to me).

Conservative wingnuts (as opposed to conservatives) are however quite shocked when you point out their hypocrisy, something like the remark “You’re the real racist”

Honestly, voting machines are mistrust-inducing at best, dangerous and hackable at worst. Why can’t y’all just use the same kind of paper ballot we do in Canada?

It is frequently noted here and other liberal-leaning sites that states like Oregon or Washington use mail-voting ballots. The argument is that voter participation is thus improved (and there is every indication that is so), as well as allowing a paper trail to follow (the mail ballots can be recounted).

This very Republican state of Nebraska uses them too. Our voter turnout in this election was over 75% (1,211,409 registered voters, 853,444 votes cast).

Elections here are very simple. The places where the states make them hard is states that could swing one way or another that have a GOP majority. Closing polling stations, disallowing early voting, disallowing mail ballots, voter ID laws, &c.

I would note that voter ID laws in particular seek to solve a problem that does not exist. Mail ballots would be the easiest way to cast fraudulent in-person votes (by swiping them out of people’s mailboxes), yet we have no such law here in Nebraska. (If the Democrats were to ever surge and threaten the supermajority of Republicans here, watch how fast the Unicameral would eliminate mail voting and impose ID laws.)

However, the reason for creation of a stereotype is not necessarily because of an observation of some people doing it, therefore all in that group are doing it.

See: White people on assistance bitching about all the black people on assistance. (Whites overwhelmingly draw assistance money.)

White people complaining about the absent father rate of blacks (the percentages are actually reversed: they are higher for whites)

Christians complaining of the immorality of atheists (statistics bear out that per capita, atheists commit fewer crimes, have fewer out-of-wedlock children, and fewer divorces)

Sometimes stereotypes are projection

New Zealand PM steps down.

John Key has announced his shock resignation as Prime Minister.

He informed the country of his decision just days after celebrating eight years in the top job and a decade as leader of the National Party.

A special caucus meeting will be held on December 12 to choose a new leader, and Mr Key will officially tender his resignation as leader to Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy later that day.

He will remain in Parliament as an MP into next year to avoid a by-election.

Mr Key said he made the decision in September and told only his deputy Bill English, who he will back as his replacement should he put his name forward at next Monday’s meeting.

Our ballot here in CA was 3 pages long. Front and back. Mostly because of all the propositions.

Ours in another part of CA was four. Because of local elections and state and local proposition.

This is where they make the excuse about how they’re not “real” jobs because they don’t pay enough for a family of four to live comfortably and come with a solid benefits package. But if you ask why they don’t just pass regulations to force companies to provide such, they go “What are you, a bunch of moochers?! Take what you can get and get your ass back to work!”

For all of you near Dallas, Brian Loncar was found dead. I haven’t heard how he died, but they had buried one of his daughters two days ago, who had killed herself due to depression.

For those of you who don’t know, Loncar was like a lawyer celebrity in that he called him self “The Strong Arm” which stuck in your head.

So, it was something planned, but he was too much of a wimp to own it when challenged. That’ll go over well as a president.

Normally I would agree but from what I have read in other places the guy is just a nasty piece of work. Drug user, abusive towards the folks he was sub-leasing to, etc.

Trade war on Day One. Probably timed to the minute when Trump becomes president.

Do these guys want to tank the economy on purpose, then buy up the pieces at fire sale prices?

Well, there is the 1917 Logan Act, prohibiting people not authorised in interfering in foreign affairs, but I doubt anyone would bring such a charge against Mr. Trump. Butthurt would turn to armed revolt.

He was the primary holder of the lease and subleased it to the other artists. Not the owner, but probably the person most responsible for the build-up of the art (and flammable material).

Anyway, off to a holiday thing here. Back in a bit.

re: #310 makeitstop

New Zealand PM steps down.

A Prime Minister is not like a President. For those unfamiliar with the office, the holder is merely “primus inter pares” and serves in that capacity at the pleasure of their peers. The resignation, or even dismissal by their own party, of a Prime Minister will not, by itself, provoke anything resembling a constitutional crisis. Key’s resignation is unexpected, but works entirely within the system.

My son just advanced me two theories about the timing.

The first is that resigning now allows his successor the better part of a year to establish themself in the role prior to the 2017 election, avoiding giving the electorate an unknown quantity to consider in the office and giving an advantage to opposition parties.

The second is that he doesn’t want to have to deal with Donald Trump. /

I have some FB friends from way back who live in NZ. I should ask them how they feel about this. I’m aware that this is not nearly the big deal that it would be if an American President stepped down.
