Right Wing Terrorist Who Wanted to “Self-Investigate Pizzagate” Arrested in Washington DC

Fake news with real consequences
Crime • Views: 62,391

If you’re not familiar with the utterly deranged delusion called #PizzaGate that’s burning up the right wing’s Twitter and Facebook bandwidth these days, here’s a story with the full background.

All you really need to know is that the far right is caught up in a conspiracy theory that a pizzeria in Washington DC is a hub of child sex trafficking, and it involves Hillary Clinton, John Podesta and a bunch of their other favorite targets. It’s being hyped by Infowars, Gateway Pundit and a host of other right wing sources.

They’ve been going completely bonkers about this fake story for the past month, and today a man incited by this bad craziness entered the Comet Pizza restaurant with an assault rifle and terrorized the customers and employees before being arrested.

This story broke earlier today but I was holding off for confirmation that the gunman was actually inspired by the PizzaGate fake news; tonight we have that confirmation in a statement from the DC Police Department:

Fake news now has some very real consequences.

UPDATE at 12/4/16 7:01:12 pm by Charles Johnson

CBS News is labeling this white right wing terrorist a “victim.” I wish I were kidding.

UPDATE at 12/4/16 9:01:17 pm by Charles Johnson

And now details are emerging about the alleged gunman; he’s a fan of Alex Jones and Infowars, a registered Republican, and has posted anti-Muslim videos on his Facebook page.

He can’t be a terrorist, he’s a white conservative. He is merely a “lone wolf” (rather than the stochastic terrorism being spun up by SMOTI, Gen. Flynn, and others).

Amazingly, nothing at Free Republic, GOPUSA, RedState, BarbWire (though they claim Cecile Richards of Planned Parenthood is about to be prosecuted), Town Hall, Drudge Report.

In the wingnutosphere, it’s as if nothing happened in DC at all.

Nope, there will be an amazing amount of discussion of his bad childhood, mental illness (spit), &c, and not a whit about two months of endless derp about a lie propagated by 4chan throughout the right-wing propaganda network.

If they called out right-wing propaganda for what it is and what it does, GOP politicians would not give their journalists “access,” and access is all that matters, not truth.

We saw this during the Iraq War, when journalists came out about how they were aware of the atrocities of the Hussein government, but kept silent because they valued their access to Baghdad over their integrity.

A fair point. In this world of free information, access is king, and the journalists know that having inside access is the only leverage they’ve got over the mindless hordes of bloggers who would usurp their throne.

Let’s be fair, here: Supposedly, the Soviet Union was set up with a similar system. Yet they failed to launch on at least one occasion. I have about 50% confidence that some well-meaning American serviceman would fail to pull the trigger, should Drumpf issue an order to Minot to let the birds fly.

I would not consider Mr. Johnson or others like Jim Wright mindless. They care about the truth.

Some media outlets care about the truth, such as Newsweek with Kurt Eichenwald, The Economist, and others, but they are being drowned in derp. Their thrones are already being usurped, so caving to propaganda serves them nothing.

I am surrounded by ICBM silos. FE Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne is the command for those silos, but the orders go out to the individual silos, bombers, and submarines.

A fifty percent chance would mean only half of them would fail to comply with the order.

The way the nuclear armament of the nation is set up is only the President may authorise an attack. While military commands advise the President and the Pentagon on the status of the world, only the President has the authority to transmit those orders.

Fifty percent is not good.

We would have fallen under the command of NORAD, as a facility on the intercept path between the American heartland and eastern Russia. The park in the center of town, the same that sports a deactivated Nike missile, details the history of our military installation and the tension that the town suffered at the hands of the Cold War.

It might be a rather dystopian view, but if someone wants to go lobbing nuclear weapons around the world, I am happy I live where I do. I won’t have to survive the aftermath of a Mad Max world.

All my adult life I have lived in places that are targets for nuclear attack (Virginia Beach, Jacksonville, Charleston, Omaha, Chicago). There pretty much isn’t a place that is not a target or close to one.

At least with all the silos around me I know it won’t be a near miss and weeks of radiation sickness. Just lawn chairs and popcorn to watch the fireworks display.

Minneapolis is close enough that I’m pretty sure I would be a smoldering crater in the event of nuclear war. It’s not at the top of anybody’s target list, but it’s within range of enough nuclear powers and has enough population density and manufacturing/raw materials capacity to be worth dropping a single warhead on.

Gun-brandishing man sought to investigate conspiracy theory, police say

“…Eyewitness Sharif Silmi was at the restaurant with his wife and three children — ages 7,9 and 12, when the suspect walked in.
“He walked right past us holding a shotgun, when we realized what was going on we gathered our young ones and started moving toward the exit,” Silmi told CNN. “It was very swift, quick exit, everybody moved out very smoothly.”
Silmi, who lives in Maryland, told CNN he and his family are Muslim and that he blamed those who were spreading “false rumors [about Comet Ping Pong] online. They put our children’s lives in danger today.”

[Embedded content]

In the 1960’s, the target was at the top of the hill behind my neighborhood. Of course, my neighborhood itself did not exist in the 1960’s; the town was a bare shell of itself, supporting the local Christian college and the military base.

Yeah, I put a pin down at the historical location of our AA missile battery. Not only is my neighborhood ash, but so is the entirety of my town, the nearby Christian college, and a significant (and probably completely unsuspecting) population center directly to our east.

There are too many missile silos around here for me to do that in one evening.

90th Missile Squadron at FE Warren AFB in Cheyenne says the missiles are scattered around in such a way that each would have to be targeted individually.

Wikipedia has a map of all the silos in the area. We would be well and truly toast.

Yeah, at least the Nike base was a single installation and would take a single warhead (while another probably would target the Mississippi River facilities). You guys, on the other hand, would just get carpet-bombed with nuclear warheads.

I think I’m with Anymouse in that I’d rather set up my lawn chair and enjoy the last few minutes with my wife before the end of the world. In that respect, it’s kind of too bad that I live in the shadow of Minot AFB and am thus unlikely to be directly targeted by a nuke with any kind of range to directly affect me.

Yup, the guards were fired. And the suspect is meeting up with my Mom to do some laundering!

He is believed to have since fled to Orlando, Fla., Detective Pastor said.

The unusual theft raises many questions. For one: Was it an inside job?

“Absolutely not,” Mr. Harrington said. The two Loomis guards working that day, who have since been fired, “cooperated 100 percent” with investigators and have no links to the suspect, he said.

It will be interesting, but I think Trump is starting to wake something in the media:

Brian Stelter:

Let’s tell some truths about lying, because the way Donald Trump lies has people rethinking some of the basic premises of journalism, like the assumption that everything a president says is automatically news. When President-elect Trump lies so casually, so cynically, the news isn’t so much the false thing he said, it’s that he felt like he could just go ahead and say it, go ahead and lie to you. That’s the story. […]

Court cases involving Trump have shown that he lies even when the truth is really easy to discern. And that’s what we’re seeing all again now. That’s why I think fact-checking is important, but the framing of these stories is even more important.

Take Trump’s promotion of this voter fraud conspiracy idea. He said on Twitter “I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.” The journalistic impulse was to say something like “Trump claims he won the popular vote.” I would suggest to you that better framing is “Trump lies again, embracing a far-right-wing conspiracy theory.”

See, focusing on the falsehood creates more confusion and gives the lie even more life. And that’s the wrong way to go. Focusing on Trump’s tendency to buy into BS gets to what’s really going on here. This calls for more reporting and for reporters to show our work, to show that we actually know the truth.

And that’s also a good starting point for us. When we see a lie, not only call it a lie, but ask why Trump feels the need to lie. I’m pretty sure you’ll take some heat for it, but it gets the discussion on the real topic.

The thing is, we’ve seen moments like this where the media seemed to have a flash of realization and began to call out Trump. But then he or one of his minions made disagreeable noises about how the media are all a bunch of “liars” and the flash dims back into the dull light of “both sides.” The media’s instinct for years has been that if you’re not the first one to be talking about a story, then you’re losing readers to somebody else. So every time Trump spews one of these conspiracy theories, instead of taking a moment to analyze, the media just rushes forward with “Trump says” headlines and then plays CYA after people have already bought into the CT.

My Grandfather (God rest his soul) parachuted into the south of France and took a piece of shrapnel from a German 88mm shell that exploded in the tree above him while he was digging a foxhole during the Battle of the Bulge. I hate Nazis, or National Socialists, and I’m sick and tired of being labeled one by people like you who are so filled with hate (apparently) that you can’t see past the leftist rhetoric that I read here on a daily basis. Anyway, we are all Americans here and we’re all gonna be just fine. Let’s just maybe start talking to each other instead of at each other for a while.
But then again, what do I know right? I’m just a stupid Trump supporter. Peace.

Trump supporters are flying Nazi flags around my area. Dixie Swastikas are flying all over Western Nebraska, but I am sure none of that has anything to do with racism.

Nazis and the Klan, Richard Spencer and Steve Bannon all endorsed Mr. Trump. When someone shows you who they are believe them the first time.

His campaign manager in New York called all Gold Star Families terrorism supporters because we spoke out against Mr. Trump’s treatment of Ghazala Khan’s right to free speech. Mr. Trump pens the media and encourages his supporters to shout “lugenpresse” at them.

A supporter of a Nazi is a Nazi. My family members died fighting fascists and Nazis. You are just arguing you are one of the “good Germans.”

Hitler did good things (for example, encouraging the building of the Autobahn network). That does not relieve him of the horrors he inflicted on Europe.

He is using his position to further his business interests, so far with India, with Argentina, and with Taiwan. He is not acting in the interest of the nation, he is acting in the interest of himself.

You don’t get out of saying “I’m not a Nazi” if you went forth and supported a Nazi. Sorry. My grandfather fought and died to defend the world from Nazis and uphold our Constitution, even though he was a refugee from Nazi evil.

Bye.

Because we liked his straight talk about the issues that we care about. Protecting our borders, growing the economy, enforcing the laws of our country, respecting our LEOs and military, etc. My wife, who is a lifetime Democrat was fed up with what she saw as an endless stream of the Clinton’s lies and corruption. We both viewed Trump as a strong, albeit flawed leader.

In 2016, Johnston released The Making of Donald Trump, a journalistic account of the rise of businessperson-turned-presidential candidate Donald J. Trump, with Melville House Publishing.[13] At the time he wrote the book, Johnston had known Trump for 28 years. The book soon became a New York Times bestseller.

Kinda weird to think about, but 50 years ago, my town would probably be on DEFCON 1 at the current news, as a front-line anti-aircraft/anti-ICBM installation. The retirement of the Nike Hercules missile removed my town from the map of military installations.

My school for first grade (1962-1963) was right next to a Nike missile base. I think it was abandoned at the time. Not that it would made much difference — it probably still would have been a target for incoming ICBMs.

I’d prefer not to re-live those fears of imminent nuclear destruction, tyvm.

It will be interesting, but I think Trump is starting to wake something in the media:

Brian Stelter:

And that’s also a good starting point for us. When we see a lie, not only call it a lie, but ask why Trump feels the need to lie. I’m pretty sure you’ll take some heat for it, but it gets the discussion on the real topic.

could someone forward Stelter’s article to the headline writers at ABC, CBS, (his own network CNN), etc.

“…When Fred Sr. died, Freddy’s children sued, claiming that the will “had been ‘procured by fraud and undue influence’ by Donald and the other surviving siblings,” according to Johnston.

Johnston writes that medical insurance had consistently been provided to the family through Fred Sr.’s company. This coverage was crucial for Freddy’s grandson (Donald’s grandnephew), who suffered from seizures and later developed cerebral palsy. So crucial, in fact, that a letter sent from a Trump lawyer to the insurer after the patriarch’s death in 1999 said that “all costs” for the sick child’s care should be covered, regardless of caps on the plan or medical necessity, according to Johnston. That didn’t last long.

A week after the lawsuit was filed in court, Freddy’s son (Donald’s nephew) received a letter informing him that the health insurance would be discontinued, meaning his ill son would be left without coverage. Donald openly admitted to the New York Daily News that he and his siblings took this action out of revenge.

“Why should we give him medical coverage?” Trump said, adding, “They sued my father, essentially. I’m not thrilled when someone sues my father.”

Your boy is about 30% supported by actual fucking Nazis and white supremacists, and plays dog-whistle politics to the absolute worst instincts of the human race on a regular basis. I watched on video as his security chief TWICE, on two different occasions, committed battery, at least once with the specific intent of starting a fight in a crowd of already-angry people. That’s before we even get to his entanglements with the Russians. The guy owes favors to the fucking Russian security apparatus, and that’s somehow OK with you. So, frankly, you’re pissing on your ancestor’s service voting for this guy. Don’t talk about patriotism. Just don’t.

Like the Republicans used to say about Bill Clinton - “character counts”. Trump’s character is shit, and it’s been shit for most of his adult life, amply testified to by pretty much everybody who’s come in contact with him.

Trump support boils down to “he’s the asshole I wish I could be”. This would be fine, except what he does affects people who aren’t as foolish as you.

well i’m serious about my question and i’d sincerely like to hear about your hopes for the trump administration, but you know us liberal types have gotten used to the vilest shitstorm of degrading insults any of us are likely to experience in our lives from republicans of all types, so we are not particularly inclined to be sympathetic to trump voters who are displeased with what people say about them and i’d advise locating your big girl panties on that particular aspect of the next 4 - 8 years

So one of the local parks puts up a big light display every year. Normally you drive through it, but this year (and maybe they’ve done it previously, I don’t know) they opened it up this weekend to pedestrians. We thought it would be fun, so we went.

They don’t allow cars at the park itself so they were talking about how they were running a free shuttle from the parking lots for one of the big tech firms down the street. Figured okay, well, we’ll do that, since it’s just a little too far to walk from home.

Hah. Hahahahahaha. HAHAHAHAHA.

Apparently the event sold out (and when I bought the tickets there were over 2k remaining SO) and the line for the shuttle was probably 40+ minutes long. We left, went and drove closer, parked, and walked in. It was enjoyable once we did that, at least.

Also there was a food truck selling cupcakes.

One of the smartest things done in the immediate aftermath of WWII was having the various politicians of the former Reich motored into the camps and shown the horrors that they had allowed to fester like an infected wound while a looping audio track beat them over the heads again and again that this was what their willingness to look the other way had wrought. Just rubbing their noses in the putrid shit that their deliberate indifference had brought into being and making it clear that there was no way to argue away their complicity. That they could not just go through the rest of their days arguing that they’d done nothing wrong, that it had been the Nazis who had run the camps, they were just “Good Germans” who’d done what they were told.

Here EUD, let me make it simple: If you don’t like that we call you a racist for voting for Trump, think of how millions of our fellow Americans feel being told that they are rapists and murderers because they hail from Mexico. Or that a judge born, raised, and educated in this country is untrustworthy because of his heritage and not anything he has done. Or that being a member of a particular faith makes your suspect and is grounds for denying you entry/reentry to this country. Or that you can’t live in an inner city without worry that you’ll be shot or stabbed every time you step out of your house and you need Big Daddy Trump there to protect you through racially-biased policies enforced by police departments with deplorable records.

See, you voted for all that shit. So it’s a little late to whine about your feelings.

Yup, as I noted in a previous thread, I was being a jerk in someone else’s (on-line) home, thought about what I did, and publicly admitted my behaviour here.

Now I got to see a troll whining we weren’t being PC enough for his taste. Was that Mr. Johnson’s reward? /s

I want ya to know AM that I don’t hold anything that was said between us against you and admit that I was talking out of my ass a few times. My emotions got the better of me and I apologize for my behavior.

So there was that building collapse Friday that pictures of got posted here. An update:

Facebook Post

There’s a possibility (slight sarcasm alert) that may have been a load bearing wall.

One person died (presumably one of the construction workers), one woman injured but alive (as well as her dog). Article here has a few more updates.

A couple of people in my FB feed have also praised Trump’s so-called straight talk, ignoring that most of what he says is utter nonsense. He’s parroting what the supporters are thinking or maybe saying at home, but that’s not straight talk. That’s called rephrasing what your mark has said in order to close a sale.

Voter: “We need to keep out all these Mexican immigrants!”
Trump: “So you’re thinking we should build a wall or something like that.”
Voter: “Right, we should build a wall!”
Trump: “Well, you’re in luck. We happen to have a great wall proposal, and best of all, it won’t cost you a dime!”

It happens. I was an egregious violator of the - eh, we’ll call it the “jerk clause.”

Anger is a self-perpetuating thing. One thing leads to another and the next thing you know you’ve alienated your best friends. I’ve been there at LGF and IRL. Owning up to the irrational shit is a positive step and as I’ve discovered, a way to endear yourself to those folks who placed you in that cycle of anger in the first place.

No one here placed me in a cycle of anger, I did that to myself.

re: #322 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I crack on south by dog carolina a lot, but I have to say Brookgreen Gardens (the largest outdoor sculpture garden in the US) is a truly fabulous place and their holiday Night of a Thousand Candles (now up to 10 nights) is truly breathtaking. Pics don’t do it justice, but…

We both viewed Trump as a strong, albeit flawed leader.

re: #352 The Madness of King Orange (aka Sophist)

Bull. Shit.

Those issues would be protecting the borders rebuilding the Berlin Wall, growing the economy destroying the economy, enforcing the laws of our country violating the Constitution and using the Power of the State to enrich Mr. Trump, respecting our LEOs except the minority ones, etc plus fascism and racism.

You’re right, im not shocked. Just foolish enough to believe we can still talk (type) to each other in a civilized manner. I’m on my phone, so it’s tough to type with one finger. I’m no spring chicken and can’t do the two thumb thing. Anyway, goodnight. Maybe I’ll be back.

You started out whining about what a buch of hate filled bigots we all are. That’s not how someone interested in a “civilized” debate broaches the topic. That is, however, how grievance-mongering Trumpfuckers have been acting for weeks.

If you don’t want to be treated like a duck, don’t quack.
