Twitter Bans Two More of the Worst White Supremacist Leaders

The people who run Twitter seem to finally be getting serious about shutting down some of the worst white supremacist and neo-Nazi accounts that have given the site a terrible reputation for hate speech and harassment.

Last month they banned a whole bunch of racist and white supremacist accounts, including Richard Spencer (who’s been in the media lately gloating about helping Trump win the election).

Now we have two more big suspensions to report; a few days ago they banned @rabite, whose real name is Andrew Auernheimer, a crony of infamous white supremacist troll Chuck C. Johnson who sports a big swastika tattooed on his chest, and recently hacked into a large number of wireless printers across the country to print flyers calling for the death of children.

And today we learned that another vile racist right winger and big Trump supporter has gotten the boot: @JaredWyand, seen in the image above. Wyand had 135,000+ followers when he was suspended.

Keep it up, Twitter. This should have been done a long time ago before they turned much of the site into a place where many people feel unsafe to visit, but better late than never.

This isn’t about free speech. Twitter has no responsibility to allow neo-Nazis and racist dirtbags to spread their evil ideology. We’ve seen exactly what happens when a large social site like Twitter refuses to deal with them because of a misguided and naïve idea of “free speech” for everyone; they run amok and ruin everything, spewing hatred and racism and harassing women and minorities relentlessly, driving decent people away.

It could be argued, in fact, that social networks like Twitter and Facebook, by failing to take action to stop the hatred and fake news spread by these people, played a big part in helping elect Donald Trump — the authoritarian crypto-fascist president-elect who is overwhelmingly supported by neo-Nazis and white supremacists.

It’s a really good question. If you imagined that the GOP would be restrained by some belief in fairness, or principle, or anything like that, the last month should have disabused you of that notion. They’re even more corrupt, power hungry, and unprincipled as I ever imagined. How do you deal with that? I know some Dems are wishing we’d never used Reid’s ‘nuclear option’ because it gave the GOP an excuse to get rid of the filibuster altogether, but honestly, they act like people who think they’ll never be on the other side of the equation, or like people who know they’ll eventually lose and are trying to do as much damage as they can in the time they have, knowing it will take decades to undo.

If it’s as bad as I think it is… and the level of corruption extends throughout the entire GOP, including Pence, Rudy Giuliani, Paul Ryan, Cruz, McConnell and the like… we could be in for a true crisis.

An already unpopular government** suddenly gets even MORE unpopular before they fuck with everything. At best. At worst, they defy the law because they see themselves AS the law.

** The GOP represents a decided minority, and let us not forget that.

That’s why the GOP will go after car/truck fuel economy standards because that’s low hanging fruit. Then they’ll roll back smokestack emissions rules, making it easier for power generators to emit pollutants, which will make downwind jurisdictions have an even tougher time trying to deal with bad air quality with no recourse given the GOP control upwind.

Of course, businesses realize that modernizing HVAC systems will bring them efficiencies that mean a return on their investments - NYC is taking the lead on this in getting commercial and residential buildings to upgrade their HVAC systems to high efficiency systems. Citylab had a piece just this past week about how the heating systems in older buildings were designed to pump out endless amounts of heat to counter having open windows (because that’s how public health officials thought people could be healthier and avoid certain diseases/ailments).

Trump’s EPA is looking to roll back all kinds of efficiency and emissions rules - claiming that it’d be good for business. That’s wrong. It’d be good for polluters - the kind of people who right now are trying to circumvent the rules. Sure, some are pointing to the rollback as a sop to the coal industry, but energy producers are realizing that natgas is far more efficient than coal - both in terms of being able to build new plants and in ongoing operations. Natgas needs smaller footprint, can receive fuel from nearby gas mains rather than stockpiling coal on-site and needing railroad sidings for constant resupply, and the emissions are still a huge issue no matter what the GOP lies say about “clean” coal.

Someone at Balloon Juice suggested calling reps that were signing on as cosponsors of the Presidential Accountability Act, so I called Betty McCollum’s office to thank her for that and then just generally asking them to resist and don’t support them in fucking up every program that helps people survive.

While I was at it I called up Franken and Klobuchar’s offices and gave the same rant. I let them know that I’d back them up on everything they did, because I do actually support about 95% of what both of them do. The staffers seemed to be glad for the calls.

I still have my list of charities I want to donate to (science seems to be rising to the top right now), but I need to spend about $600 buck this month for car maintenance. My 2009 Vibe turned over 50,000 this month. It took me 11 months to put on 3000 miles since the last oil change (please don’t give me any Vibe hate. I really like mine).

As it is, the FDA has been dealing with issues with expedited medical devices not being safe or as effective as older tech. Expanding that to drugs is a bad thing.

If you were to say that the US would expedite meds and devices approved by the EU, that’s a different story, since the EU standards are similar to US. But that’s not what’s happening here.

Trump’s looking to gut the regulatory scheme at agency after agency opening the door for corruption, and ineffective or dangerous drugs getting on the market before their efficacy is known.

We happen to be more polarized now than anytime since 1865 according to several historians I have read. Maybe your analysis differs.

As I see it, the country is coming apart and we cannot even discuss what is wrong because half of the populace listens to or reads propaganda designed specifically to promote ignorance, fear and anger.

Also, we are now in a scenario similar to that of Athens at the end of the Peloponnesian War where every battle had to be won…or the war is lost. Trump and his cabinet pick and actions are demonstrating that. Everything…everything gained under the last 45 years may be erased in the next 4.

What do we do when basic civil liberties come under sustained attack? Trump has threatened freedom of speech quite specifically. The newspaper owned by his son in law published an op-ed urging federal investigation of protesters nationwide. We are looking at a likely wholesale ideological purge of the federal workforce…and that is something they bragged about last July!

What do Democratic states start doing at that point when their own laws get over-ridden by Trump? Nullification?

The essential myth of this country…that you can do anything and be anything as long as you work hard and play by the rules…has been thrown away and trashed. Our founding contradictions of “All men are created equal” and “White lives tend to matter a hell of a lot more than others” (among others) are not being resolved.

Not. Being. Resolved.

I don’t believe they will be. Not after what we have seen this last year.

We are coming apart. And people are being well paid to make it happen.

The paranoid sections of the populace are now armed with massively more firepower than they were in 1861. There are more channels for rapid dissemination of hatred. And, of course, there is more in the way of vulnerable, essential infrastructure just waiting to be hacked or bombed by the crazies. Add in nuclear weapons, possible biological and/or chemical weapons and a populace probably more bitterly divided than ever, with an increasing tendency to self-segregate socially, economically and racially and no authority figures with enough credibility or charisma to bring the nation together and I think the case that we are now in a worse situation than 1861 looks pretty reasonable.

The reality is that the vast majority of Americans are not that into politics. They voted or not and went on with their lives. People like us who deeply care about policy are a small minority.

75% of registered voters in California voted. I’d think that they are acutely aware of what’s going on.

Pretty sure it’s a different story in, say, Bumfuck County, Wyoming.

It’s taken me a while to sort out my feelings about the passing of John Glenn. It has been one of the few times in my life that I have shed tears for someone I did not know personally. It is hard to explain just how much he meant to some of my generation, a hero and patriot for the ages. He was a war hero to be sure, in the desperately brutal struggle against the Japanese Empire, and again against Kim Il Sung’s ambition in the Korean War.
His major achievement, his monument, was an achievement of peace though. His first orbital flight was every bit as courageous and risky as any feat of arms. We know now that his chances were put at 50/50, no better. He knew that, of course, but he went anyway.
He was a tremendous and personal inspiration. I wrote to him shortly after the flight (I was 12 then, about to turn 13). I explained that my dad was in the Air Force and I wanted to be a pilot and possibly an astronaut. The response I got was undoubtedly prepared by NASA PR but I treasured it nevertheless. It advised me to study hard and believe in myself. I did not do as much of that as I could have, but by God I did become a pilot, though not an astronaut.
We are honored to have had him with us this long.

I don’t think Trump is about averting anything.

He’s a wholly owed subsidiary of the Kremlin, bought and paid for.

Putin’s aim is to take this country over, and Trump will just look the other way while he does it.

I’d rather risk a civil war, TBH.
