Again…it’s amazing how fast conservatives can get their lines and soundbites accepted as “Conventional Wisdom” while seemingly barely trying.

Was that our collective imagination or do we have video of Trump encouraging Russia to hack Secretary Clinton’s emails? What the hell is King going on about? Trump is disgraceful. His election is horrific.

More amazing to me is the flip from ‘Russia Bad!’ to ‘Russia Good!’ on the part of the Right. Not to mention how giving speeches to Goldman Sachs was a sign of being owned by them, but raiding their upper management to staff the Administration is just fucking dandy.

I don’t think I could hold all those different positions at the same time without my head exploding:

1. The Electoral College was a genius design by the Founders to prevent tyranny, but if the Electors exercise their right to vote their conscience as Hamilton intended, that’s TYRANNY!!!

2. Trump won a landslide in the electoral college, smaller than 45 previous elections.

3. The popular vote doesn’t count. At all. But Trump won the popular vote, if you exclude the millions of illegal votes the Democrats were clever enough to cast without detection, but dumb enough to concentrate in states they were going to win anyway.

4. Clinton meeting with someone who donated to the Clinton Foundation whom she would have met with anyway is CORRUPTION!!!, but Trump appointing one of the few people to give money to HIS foundation is perfectly fine.

And on, and on, and on.

The whole thing has really disillusioned me big time. I mean disappointments happen in politics. I remember 2004 quite well and the midterm losses in 2010 and 2014 were disappointing as well but that’s how it goes. This? This whole thing was something completely different and the way the right just dismisses it because their team benefited is disgusting. And these are the same assholes who want to lecture the left on patriotism and love of country?

I love how there was this interval in which there was smugness about Mitt Romney being “right” about Russia being dangerous…then “Russia Good.”

But the operating axiom is “what we do is okay, no matter what it is.” There’s no fixed standard of veracity, nor of moral action.

(Festival of Holidays sounds like someone’s snarky take on midwinter holidays in American commerce-which makes it a perfect fit for Disneyland, IMHO.)

It’s what I blame for a lot of how poorly informed people are.

It’s a common mistake I think to blame Fox News for misleading its audience when in fact the network was shaped by its audience and not the other way around. These people are poorly informed because they want to be or believe they need to be, not because external forces have manipulated or misled them. Their own pre-existing demand for a cognitively biased, ideologically orthodox news source formed a vacuum that Fox News was created to fill.

At the heart of modern ethno-nationalist conservatism is the knowing consumption and regurgitation of flagrant lies until the sheer act of repetition over time causes these people to actually believe what they’re saying. As such the vast majority of these people are wholly complicit in their own brainwashing, which is why confronting them with the truth only hardens their ideological position and rejection of any inconvenient facts.

As I’ve said before what we’re witnessing is mass dishonesty as a kind of shibboleth, intended to signal membership within the group and separate the tribe from all others, to psychologically prepare them for the coming violence they feel a need to pre-excuse. They perceive themselves as always under severe attack and that in a life or death existential fight for survival that supersedes all other ethical considerations.

I’d say that without Fox News, it would not be as organized or as bad as it is. There’s the ‘I lost my parents to Fox News’ phenomenon, widely discussed on the Left, where adult kids come home to find Fox News on all day and night, and their parents, who they had seen as at least reasonable, totally buying into the bullshit. And there’s some work been done on the neurochemical reward system of perpetual outrage. It’s literally addictive.

Charlie Sykes wrote a ‘mea culpa’ column for the NYT, wherein he takes at least some responsibility for so successfully attacking the mainstream media for bias that the Right by and large now won’t accept ANYTHING coming from them, and then failing to fill the resulting gap.

I’d say that Fox News and the scared, angry, reality-denying Right grew symbiotically, a feed-forward activation loop. There’s a reason you don’t find feed-forward activation loops in biology - they rapidly run out of control.

Speaking of horrible holiday songs, the lyrics to “Winter Wonderland” are just freaking weird.

He’ll ask us are you married, we’ll say no man
But you can do the job when you’re in town

Are these people engaged? So their wedding has already been scheduled with Parson Brown, when he comes to town, why do they need to build a snowman?

Does one of them have Elsa superpowers to bring the snowparson to life?

Are they gay and can’t get married by Parson Brown so a snowparson has to officiate their wedding?

Are they married to other people?

What other reasons would people have for making a fake wedding with a snowman officiating?

Just home from my Dem Women’s Xmas party. Such fun. Super diverse group—all ready to fight the good fight; great food, good conversation, a political quotes game (because I don’t think it’s a party without games!) with prizes. All fun—then, as I was waiting for the check to settle up, was in the bar and the yam was on TV—I made a snide comment and the bartender started woofing about how finally we will get some jobs back and anything will be better than the last 8 years, and blah blah blah.

I was not letting it go and pointed out the unemployment numbers etc. He continued on how everything was going to be better—just wait and see. I said I had to turn away because I couldn’t look at the yam’s face and mentioned to a few of the waitresses who were standing there about the extension to make Trump a Burger so you didn’t have to look at his face. They chuckled and avoided the bartender’s eye.

He finally said, “Well, we’ll see.” I said, “Uh huh.” and then left a ginormous tip for the servers! The end.

I wish I could double upding for the last bit about tipping the servers. I make it a point, at every establishment I attend, to leave a decently generous gratuity. I don’t want to be that asshole who gets featured on social media for being a cheapskate and drawing a picture of a dick on the bill.

Washington (CNN)President Barack Obama on Thursday vowed retaliatory action against Russia for its meddling in the US presidential election.
“I think there is no doubt that when any foreign government tries to impact the integrity of our elections that we need to take action and we will at a time and place of our own choosing,” Obama told National Public Radio.

Describing potential countermeasures by the US, the President said “some of it may be explicit and publicized; some of it may not be.”
He said he directly confronted Russian President Vladimir Putin about a potential US response, and said his counterpart acknowledged his stance.
“Mr. Putin is well aware of my feelings about this, because I spoke to him directly about it,” Obama said.

Vanity Fair also pilloried Trump’s DC hotel in November. vanityfair.com

I recall reading a review of Trump Tower (I now forget which publication had it), which pointed out all the unfinished items in Trump Tower, as if the contractors either did a half-assed rush job and then eft, or left because they never got paid. The DC hotel review has the same observations: closed off rooms, a “Jefferson Library” decorated with portraits on Lincoln, a nearly empty lobby bar.

A metaphor for the Trump Administration, which a month away from its “opening,” still seems remarkably unfinished.

If the CIA and whatever other security agencies have real evidence of Russia using its “hacking” prowess to help Trump in the election, they have to come forward now and release it to the American people and the whole world.

This is too big to just let it out in drips and drabs via media leaks.

If the evidence exists, it has to come out NOW.

I know, I know, we have to “protect the sources.” Well, sure. They should do everything they can to protect the sources. But this is too big — way too big — to pussyfoot around. (How does having “sources” do any good if the CIA no longer has a free and democratic America to protect?)

Otherwise, they might as well just shut up about it.

The Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia is directly connected to Kirill, who has a symbiotic relationship with Putin.

Let those in the Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia feel the heat.

That’s like saying that because some imams cooperate with Da’esh, it’s hard to think of Islam as a legit religion in the US. Which is bullshit, and you know it and I know it, but you’re willing to do it here because you’re not a member of that group. Stop.

I’m mulling over the idea of trying to arrange a protest at the local Russian Orthodox Church.

The Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia is directly connected to Kirill, who has a symbiotic relationship with Putin.

Let those in the Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia feel the heat.

I wouldn’t recommend picketing a Russian Orthodox Church over an alleged symbiotic relationship with Vladimir Putin.

There might be a reason to picket a church, but the mere appearance of “Russian” in its name (a symbiotic relationship) is not it. While the ROC in Russia is cosy with the Russian government, it is not so here.

Mr. Trump is misdirecting attention away from the speech he cancelled today to say how he would separate himself from his businesses, and from how he had his children today in a meeting with a bunch of tech CEOs (minus Twitter’s, because Twitter would not create a Crooked Hillary emoji at his request).

Anytime Mr. Trump makes a weird tweet, look for what he is trying to direct your attention away from.

Tech CEO’s now know the way to Mr. Trump is through his children.

I want to highlight a clear statement of why Trump beat Clinton, from Right Wing radio host Charlie Sykes:

“What they did buy into was the argument that this was a “binary choice.” No matter how bad Mr. Trump was, my listeners argued, he could not possibly be as bad as Mrs. Clinton. “

I know people are fixated currently on the deteriorating situation in Aleppo, but please let’s not forget the Rohingya suffering even as they fled the fascists in their own country.

This sobering read reinforces the suffering they endure even in Muslim-majority Malaysia:

But Abdul Rahman said he stays away from certain areas. Being a Rohingya refugee means you live in a heightened state of alert; he has been robbed and assaulted a few times before.

“Because we are aliens in a foreign land, they (locals) look down on us… they see me carrying those things (and assume I have money) so they rob me,” he said, without elaborating further.

There was fear in his voice as he spoke about these incidents. When asked to give details, he shied away. Rafi said this was because he feared revealing too much would expose him to some form of retaliation, especially since the perpetrators are often Malays, the country’s ethnic majority.

“We as foreigners in a foreign land, we can’t complain much. Who are we to ask for rights? Even our mother country we have to ask for it, I don’t think we can do much here,” Rafi said.

I have to remind other Muslims that this whole Ummah unity is a farce when you live in a Muslim country. It’s no different from any other country when it comes to natives vs outsiders.

What we need to do is convince the fence sitters is that nothing Trump says can be trusted, that he lies like a rug. Immunize them against the self-promoting bluster which is never completely truthful. They need to change their attitude about claims from the Trump camp, that the first thing to do is disbelieve the claim as bullshit. Most of all, get them to read, not watch the liars, who are very convincing on TV. Convince them that Trump only thinks of himself and has never done anything for anybody else (ask for an example).

I bought a snowblower two years ago because we went through a couple of brutal snow years. I haven’t even put gas in it yet. If it’s less than 8”, it’s less hassle to shovel than to use the blower. We only had one or two snowstorms last year.

Two years ago, I had to run my snowblower over to my neighbor’s house because he was completely snowed under and unable to cope with his puny shovel. Earlier this winter, I noticed him showing off with a brand-new snowblower. Looks like he learned his lesson.

Delta charges $300 more for flights out of my new airport to get to MSP. When I used to live in MSP, they pretty much ran the show as that was one of their fortress hubs-but living in a spoke city now, my options are limited but I avoid the headaches of a major airport.

And I’m still pissed at Delta after the post-Northwest merger-Northwest had yearlong nonstops to my new home-as a matter of fact, they dropped a LOT of non-stops out of MSP post-merger. So I’ll be more than happy to give my business to United (I used to predominattely fly them when I lived in Chicago anyway.)

In general, direct flights are best. Airline is less relevant. Most of them suck.

Southwest sucks less and since direct flights from CA to NC are somewhat harder to come by, we choose them.

So I was shopping this afternoon and I heard THE. WORST. MOST. TERRIBLE. AWFUL, NO. GOOD. VERY. BAD. HOLIDAY. MUSIC. EVER.

A “jazz styling” of “O Come All Ye Faithful”

“I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” sung as a slow ballad.

A “jazz styling” of “Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”

What could possibly be worse?

Another “jazz styling” with scat vocals of “Silent Night”

I don’t see “Little Drummer Boy” (any version) there, so that’s a solid indication that things can get worse.

Just listened to a Cajun version of “It Came upon a Midnight Clear” on a program break on Louisiana Public Broadcasting. Real old-time chanky-chank. Can’t say that it exactly screamed Christmas, but it got me to open another beer and start patting my foot in waltz time, which this year may be about as much as we can hope for.

I’m going to need to go to bed tomorrow; an interesting drive starts tomorrow.

My wife is over the moon about our visit to Sacramento: She is thrilled at the California State Railroad Museum, and overjoyed at her chance to drive the high-speed rail locomotive simulator.

I only listen to, willingly, Manheim Steamroller christmas music or classical. MS is cornball as it gets but it is mostly upbeat and no vocals and i find that is the best one can hope for.

re: #73 The Vicious Babushka

So I was shopping this afternoon and I heard THE. WORST. MOST. TERRIBLE. AWFUL, NO. GOOD. VERY. BAD. HOLIDAY. MUSIC. EVER.

A “jazz styling” of “O Come All Ye Faithful”

“I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” sung as a slow ballad.

A “jazz styling” of “Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”

What could possibly be worse?

Another “jazz styling” with scat vocals of “Silent Night”

Scat is only acceptable when Tom Servo does it.

I like “Little Drummer Boy.” In certain arrangements.

But pineapple on pizza is just wrong. Always.

Can’t do it, simply because I first heard of the outfit twenty-something years ago when Rush Limbaugh “discovered” them. Far as I know, he still plugs their music every year. OK, it’s a guilt by association thing, but I can’t get around it.

The funniest rendition of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” is by The Klezmonauts, done as a Western-styled piece after “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly”

(The rest of their stuff is funny too)

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

Most of them only know that Trump had a TV show and that he’s a “very successful businessman.” They know little of the details of his tawdry career.

Blank slates can be written on. We can fill those details in.

BBC reports on Sweden bringing an old military base on the island of Gotland out of mothballs.

My maternal grandmother was from Gotland. I’ve visited Visby, but not her hometown in the south.

MSNBC is reporting that NPR’s “Morning Edition” will carry an interview with President Obama about what the USA will or will not do about NBC’s allegations that Vladimir Putin directly intervened in our electoral process.

Somehow, I doubt he’ll tell us that Seal Team Six has dropped Putin into the Indian Ocean. :/

They don’t try, and won’t try. What’s true is what emphasizes their inherent morality (regardless of their actual actions or drives) and the basic depravity of anyone they resent (regardless of how they actually behave). There’s no such thing a contradictory evidence, because there’s no standard of evidence.

VB has a nice graphic she tweets about Trump’s track record as a businessman, which is just one failure after another. He’s a complete phony. If he hadn’t started out in business with a huge head start from his daddy, Trump would have washed out early on.

re: #225 Anymouse
