The heater core in my MGB broke one cool Autumn evening in Ithaca(the windows all fogged up INSTANTLY). I couldn’t afford to replace it for a couple months, so I had no heater at all in an Ithaca winter.

Not sure, since the devices were no longer in her or Weiner’s possession when the second search warrant was sought and the second warrant technically didn’t target Abedin or Weiner. They’d already surrendered them in the investigation of Weiner’s texting of an underage girl, and the new warrant was sought to expand the search for any emails they might be able to tie into the security investigation of Clinton’s server. A better inquiry is into the affidavits that were signed justifying that warrant, since those affidavits would necessarily have asserted a strong likelihood of the searches unearthing evidence of a crime, evidence that never materialized.

If he wasn’t such a destructive force I would feel such great pity for him. He’s never known great literature, music, architecture or anything that elevates humanity because he’s so obsessed with himself and his daddy/mamma issues that he cannot rise above his insecurities. But then, if he could, he wouldn’t be so destructive. He cannot tolerate true greatness.

Trump’s main goal to drive up oil prices, that’s the main task Putin has given him. The easiest way to do that is to toss a grenade into the Israeli / Palestinian status quo and forever destroy any hope of a two state solution. The second easiest way is to get into a shooting war with Iran that closes off the Straight of Hormuz. My guess is that both options will be implemented before 2017 is over.

OK, I won’t leave it there. Frogs. Cute little frogs. Frogs are elemental predators, though we typically think of them as prey (and they are of larger predators, thus a vital step in the food chain). They are enormous predators of insects, the basics of dry land food source. They are the canaries in the mines and they are diminishing at alarming rates worldwide. This has been going on for quite some time but few pay attention even though we have been sounding the alarms. This is very, very serious… but frogs. Who cares about frogs? (Besides wrenchwench) We think we’re above this, immune. Stupidly. We are so fucked and we ignore this.

You are so correct. We think of climate change only how it affects us and we think, OK we got AC so what if it gets hotter? We have been trained to believe we aren’t critters and part of the natural world and thus not dependent on it. We believe we can control it to our advantage. We can’t. With every species that goes extinct which is happening at a shocking rate, our survival is ever more threatened. I explain our natural world as a giant brain. We can lose individual cells of it and survive just fine. When we lose chunks of it, whole sections of it, as in species extinction, we start to lose effectiveness. Lose too much, we die. We are at a precipice, a real sharp drop now. The sea rise is a big issue but we will not survive as a species for that to be the major issue.

They believe that humans are divinely created as separate from all the other species which came before Adam in Genesis., and further that God will protect his children from catastrophe. So, they discount as mere silliness all the scientific evidence that points to serious, worldwide catastrophes as temperatures increase, and seem unconcerned about certain species becoming extinct.
Combine that attitude with the sincere expectation that Jesus is coming any day now to take all the chosen into heaven and you can see that they really could care less what happens to the Earth and the poor schmoes left behind. Rather, the attitude is take everything out we can get now before it’s too late to enjoy it.
Aside from wacky weather, no one in the USA has been seriously disadvantaged by global warming — yet. They may start to pay attention when sea levels start rising and their beach front homes are partly underwater.

Rising sea temperatures are also messing up commercial fishing, as cold water species move deeper or further away to find more hospitable climes. They’re replaced with warm water species which may not be profitable or tasty.

You point out what I started to but refrained. Our attitudes in the west (excepting Native American which has it completely right) are christian based and thus, fucked up in this regard. Christianity, IMO, has been the most destructive force in history in that it has taught us that we are above and not a part of our natural world. Most people are horrified when I say we’re animals just like all other animals. OMG. They are insulted in the extreme. This attitude is our doom.
Some forms of Christianity teach that. It is especially prevalent in the fundamentalism that infests much of western Christianity but not everyone of us is antisciece or think we are not as much a part of the world as the rest of creation.

It’s late and I’m on a roll, shall we discuss the whole alpha thing? If I may stroke a bit, I’m one who helped trash the concept as he’s using it based on my doctorate thesis in 1984. His alpha thing is based on the wolf pack theory of old, that there is this superior male in a wolf pack made up of non-related wolves that somehow come together as a group and one guy is stronger and more testosterone charged who dominates and all others, lesser others (all male of course because females don’t rate) who bow to this dominance (beta males, in his world). Total bullshit. A wolf pack is a family unit. Dad and Mom and kids. Parents rule, just like human family units. Mom and Dad are alphas in this definition because they dominate in the hierarchy. Just like people. It has nothing to do with strength or superiority.
And in those packs it’s the females who rule. Alpha male submits more often than not.

I’m also amused by the MRA and white supremacist types who analyze every single movie as some kind of commentary on how marginalized white men are. They freaked out about Heimdall being played by an AA actor, and the leads in Star Wars VII being an AA guy and a young woman. Now they’re bitching (pun intended) because the lead in Rogue One is female and some of the bad guys are, like, bad white GUYS.
Meanwhile, I go to a movie to be entertained, maybe educated, or moved emotionally, and I don’t care who or what the lead actors are. I judge a movie by the acting, the writing, the camera work, etc., not the color or gender of the leads.
There’s a bazillion Hollywood movies over the last 100 years of cinema starring white men in leading roles. If I want to be “inspired” by some “alpha white male,” it’s not especially hard to find them in movies — or TV shows, FTM.

Never mind that the bad guys in Star Wars have always been predominantly white guys, and I believe that was in no small part because the Empire was explicitly designed to remind people of nazis.
I will give CCJ the tiniest bit of undeserved and completely wrong credit, I believe movies like Star Wars do inspire people to “fight the power”, but it wasn’t “young white boys” that were inspired. It was people.

To the person who inquired yesterday: the part of Southern France we live in (the Aude) is a lefty bastion. The National Front holds sway further east, in the Provence/Cote d’Azur area.
Due to internecine divisions between social-right (Marine Le Pen) and alt.right (her niece), the FN is down a bit lately. That said, the seemingly only viable alternative right now seems the Thatcherite Fillon (presently polling at 67% vs 33% for the FN in the second Round) due to massive disorganization & disillusionment on the Left.

and here’s TPM on why we can’t expect the FBI to do jack shit
With the dirty play of the special agents in the New York field office, Comey’s July tongue-lashing, his outrageous late October letter to Congress and then this, it’s hard to have much of any trust that the FBI is a fair-minded custodian of the immense power it wields.
re: #262 sagehen
and here’s TPM on why we can’t expect the FBI to do jack shit
The FBI is completely compromised in my view, from Comey on down. Way too many ideologues running free throughout the organization. We should expect them to do nothing to resolve any of this, if not actively try to thwart investigations.
The CIA is going to have to save themselves from the beating they’re currently taking. And if that means taking down a large chunk of the FBI, so be it.
And once again I sit here amazed that I’m actually pulling for the CIA, but they may be the only hope we’ve got left.
re: #262 sagehen
and here’s TPM on why we can’t expect the FBI to do jack shit
We are certainly going to have our work cut out for us. The advantage is that most people in the country already don’t like Trump, and the election hasn’t changed that. I also take comfort in the biker dude higher up yelling in the face of the neo-Nazi. I suspect he’d cuss all day about Clinton, but we could agree that some things just shouldn’t happen in this country.
One of the other things I worry is that we’re going to get tricked into calling Trump out enough times for false things that people grow tired of it.
re: #231 The Vicious Babushka
Actually I have seen the “replace” plan on Paul Ryan’s website and it’s a bunch of bullshit as you probably suspect. HSA’s and bullshit worthless policies “sold across state lines, no regulations!” that cover nothing.
Here is the diabolic GOP plan. They will quickly repeal Obamacare next year, but repeal won’t go into effect for a couple of years. Because insurance companies know the exchanges are going away, lots of them will quit offering plans on the exchanges, premiums will soar, and many places will have no plans to choose from. Republicans will say this proves that Obamacare was failing, so its a good thing they repealed it, and most people will believe them. Then whatever craptastic replacement the GOP manages to come up with will look good by comparison. I can see it like its already happened.

This case will be drop-kicked out of court on a motion for summary judgment. That’s because Jones is on Facebook at Facebook’s suffrance. It’s not like Facebook is the government. None of his rights are being infringed. If he wants something different, he can start the Gab version of Facebook.
The real reason the GOP is repealing Obamacare is that the members of the 0.1% will get a $200k tax cut thanks to repeal.
I keep thinking about this upcoming press conference and wondering what Obama’s strategy will be.
I imagine that he’ll lay out the details of the Russian hacking and what we know in much greater detail, and take pains to answer every question in as much detail as he can in order to put out all the information that he can.
But I’m also half-expecting him to try and goad Trump into doing something so blatantly petty and potentially unconstitutional (like getting pissed and threatening to arrest Obama or something equally crazy) that people will finally begin to focus on just how out of his mind Trump really is.
And those electors had damn well better be watching.

So, Ducktales is getting a revival. Let’s see who they got for the various characters….
Yep, David Tennant is Scrooge McDuck. I love Disney, and the original Ducktales, so I might have to catch this.
Other thoughts.
Does that mean we might get David Tennant in Kingdom Hearts III.
Or, perhaps we might get David Tennant as Cait Sith in the FFVII Remake?
Some of you are probably asking, why Cait Sith? Well, a recent re-translation of the game did find that, if it was done properly, Cait should have have a Scottish Accent.
Considering the success of Final Fantasy XV, and the level of fame FFVII has, they may be able to pull in some huge names for FFVII. I would also be over the moon if they could get Capaldi.

Also, it most definitely was Aerith. The way it was written in Japanese, the ending for her name was the same as Sephiroth’s.

I’ve been thinking about getting back into the FF series since XV came out. I’m needing a good game that I can spend a lot of hours on. Been wanting to get the remaster of Skyrim, but I hear it’s having issues. I’ll wait for then to patch out the problems. It’s a long time until RDR 2 gets here, so I need something to fill the void.

Final Fantasy VII has aged gracefully, though you definitely want to play it with a controller.
I would recommend either the Steam Version, or the upcoming PS4 re-release.
The Remake should be here next year, or the following.
The translation has the awful mistakes out, but it is still inaccurate. In terms of English Translations, they are all sort of weird. For Final Fantasy XV, the English Translation made Gladiolus an asshole, for example.

But they are acting as enablers and as such are 100% complicit in the destruction of our moral fiber. I don’t think that anyone in Twitter, let alone Jack, will ever learn that lesson.

I am still amazed Morocco did that. That was practically asking to be colonized, and yet, they did it anyway. That took some cojones on the part of Muhammad IV.
This dovetails into why I don’t like Free Trade. On one hand, there needs to be adjustible trade tariffs to account for currency and economic manipulation by various states.
On the other hand, I think in case of nations need to be pulled up, or for loyal allies, the trade terms should be such that you are encouraging business to make American goods in those nation. Morocco is not too poor, but they lag behind the rest of North Africa because of a lack of resources. Plugging them into our economy would be a massive boost. Encourage companies to move their factories to Morocco under a special trade agreement, that also covers worker safety and wage laws.
Edit: Missed a very important word.

I like the use of the word “steals” here versus “captures” in other versions.
Having a 990/1000 Gamerscore for FFXV on Xbox One (beat the game, and about half of the post game dungeons) my advice is:
If you don’t have it now, wait until the first patch and maybe the DLC. The story is very poorly told, the camera is a mess. 8/10 would play again, but the patch is going to fix a couple of story issues, and Chapter 13 was *awful*.

re: #337 Bass Reeves
My feeling is that XV is that it is the best FF game since X.
But VII, VIII, and X remain at the top, tied in quality for various reasons. VII because of the emotions it brings out and characters, VIII for its sophistication and world building (Not to mention a story than that takes time to eat up and the metaphysics of Time Travels being explored in a way we would see again until Moffat’s Doctor Who 11 years later), and X because it is good, but also one of the very few instances of a East Asian High Fantasy works.

International trade is a little beyond me right now. I have more opinions than information.
While we are talking about hilariously awful translations in Final Fantasy, let’s me show you an explanation of the worst in FF history. The Spanish Translation of VII:
In Spain, Ahriman was translated to Alemania, Spanish for Germany. Also, the translators managed to call Aeris both a woman and a man in the very same dialog box, multiple times (and did that to Tifa and Jesse, and probably any female character, too). And Allévoy, a typo of Allá voy (Here I come) is an actual meme. Sífilo is a meme too; it’s one of many typos of Sephiroth/Sefirot that happens to look (and sound) very similar to syphilis. Also, when you talk with a child in Costa del Sol, he says, more or less It hurts when you kick [the ball] with your bare feet; in Spanish, it got translated to It hurts when you kick me with your bare feet. Yuffie says let’s go instead of let go to Don Corneo’s henchmen, and the time when she says GROSS-NESS is just untranslated. Oh, and Absorb MP materia, in some games, had the description text: Summons Knights of the Round Table. Spanish translation for FFVII was horribly catastrophic. It could have its own wiki.
However, there is a punch line:
Strangely enough, in the aforementioned horrible spanish translation, Cloud correctly indicates Barret to NOT attack the Guard Scorpion when its tail is up. Guess even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Final Fantasy VI was awesome too. How can you not love the Opera House and a character with an attack dog?
It also had one of the series best villains IMO.

I agree, I actually got too bored to finish XII and XIII, but then I refused to play X-2 on general principle. XV did the business enough for me to consider going back to XIII (although it’s not on Xbone). I actually went back and bought the earlier ones for mobile devices, which is kind of hilarious and makes me feel old.
I just had a discussion at work with a guy who played XI, which I skipped. However, we both played XIV, so that was fine.

Speaking of the Ottomans, it makes me laugh so much when these same Wahabi/Salafi nutcases wax lyrical about the rule of the Ottomans. When these same people would have been locked up by Ottoman rulers for advocating sedition.
They have their own ideas and perceptions about the Ottomans that is clearly not rooted in reality. Neither the Da’esh concept or the Hizb-ut-Tahrir concept for a khilafat come anywhere close to what the Ottomans held during their rule.
re: #346 Eclectic Cyborg
Kefka is over-rated. He’s just the Joker with Magic.
Not to mention the loads and loads of characters means character development is small for any of them.
In Japan, VI is ignored, with V being considered the best of the Nintendo era games.
Also, the constant bashing of VII, VIII, and X from the fans of VI has turned me off from ever playing the game. 6’s fans are the video game equivalent of the Tea Party, or the Berners.

The main problem with XV is the character development happened offscreen from the game. Kingsglaive and the anime are somewhat mandatory watching to understand character backstory, and some characters literally disappear offscreen without and explanation. When all that is patched, it will be better than X for me.

re: #348 Bass Reeves
I liked XIII, but they did something very stupid.
A good chunk of the story and back story was told in Elder Scrolls format. You know, where the information is in books? Yeah, much of XIII was in a sort of Datalog in the menu page. I have XIII-2 and Lightning returns. Will have to play through them, but won’t do so until I get every trophy in XIII.I do want to note that everywhere outside the English Speaking world thinks of XIII more highly, so I think there might be translation problems again.
In regards to the remake of VII, 2 more things need a remake or re-release.
Before Crisis was a very decent game, but was never released in the US. You could now release or minorly remake it.
And DIrge of Cerberus, for all it’s flaws, I think told a decent story, but was mired down in low-res graphics, and the fact that Dirge of Cerberus was the first non-RPG Square-Enix made. It should have been built in a much different way, that could be done now? Devil May Cry-esque preferably, because Vincent, even in the original, was a weird and creepy in his powers. He was able to jump several times his height and glide in the original game, and Advent Children showed him to be not anywhere approaching human in capabilities.
I mean, come the fuck on, he can turn himself into a non-corporeal form. Beginning at 2:55
And he can do other weird shit. Like Riding thermals, and phasing from location to location, I think?
Yes, I fully accept the Compilation. The reason is that FFVII’s glaring flaw was world-building we know very little about what happened in the world before the game, and the ending was so open ended that anything could be done with it. In short, it is the perfect game to build a franchise around.

Such a “debate” turns Baby Whiplash into a sympathetic figure and falsely establishes himself as a “reasonable conservative.”
So I have no doubt that he would agree to it.
The correct response to a debate challenge from David Duke is to tell him to go slither back under whatever rock he crawled out from. You don’t dignify scum sucking racists by debating them.

The Neo-Calvinistic prosperity theology is one of the most absolute rank things about the strain of Conservative Evangelism that’s seeped into nearly every facet of America today. The absolute slavish fealty to enforcing Alger-esque ‘bootstraps’ mentality as if it was THE one true path to salvation, and if you failed, you clearly failed because you’re a bad person and God Hates You.

It was pointed out that one thing that Putin would just love to see is a rise in oil prices.
Well, leaders who make comments leading to political instability and military threats drive up oil prices.
Then: Presto! It’s Obama’s fault for not drilling more domestically and building more pipelines…

And Jesus never taught it. But you never would know it by looking at so many of his American followers. Which is why it confuzzles them when I tell them I follow Jesus, but I don’t do church, because church is generally full of people who worship wealth and power, men who think women should STFU and leaders who will cover up child sexual abuse with regularity.
I don’t claim to be perfect, and I sure as hell don’t have it right, but I do know that Jesus didn’t spend his time cozying up to wealth and power. If he did, we wouldn’t know him at all today because he would have been some stooge to Herod or Pilate or the chief temple priest.

And it leads to the perverse (as in Paul Ryan-esque) notion that the best way to help the poor is to force them to learn self-reliance and person initiative…by denying them any form of government aid or assistance.

I’m honestly a bit astonished the GOP hasn’t pushed a new Republican-Approved Bible that takes out the stuff they don’t want and shoehorns in lots of wealth-worship, pro-authoritarianism, and white supremacy. We’re at the point right now where most churches would welcome the change, unfortunately.
So, the President’s presser is about to get underway. I hope it is a good one. We need it…very, very…very much!

My deal is, I’m a lapsed Catholic. I became lapsed during, of all things, time in a Catholic High School, with a Theology teacher who I’m pretty sure was a literal Hippie (he was definitely an activist and had pictures of his time protesting the School of the Americas in the 80s). I lapsed not because I didn’t believe in the philosophies of the bible, but the mysticism. I felt that following it because chiding from above rather than because you were actually a good person really didn’t mean much. I took the idea of ‘you will know them by their deeds’ to heart, and more and more I found myself being unable to reconcile the hypocrisy regarding those who thumped the Bible, Catholic or Protestant. And on top fo that, those who took the Bible LITERALLY and simply refused to see the inconsistencies within it, often in the same book.
Those who preach prosperity theology, and those who use Christian as a tribal identifier are the exact sort of people Jesus preached against, so damn often.

MRA types tend to be the kind that never live up to their own damn myths, no matter how much they delude themselves into believing they do. The kind that preaches about how women really “deserve” to get treated in order to keep them in line, but couldn’t hold down a romantic partner of any sort for any period of time even if they paid them.

From TheHill
“…The 17 people filling President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet and similar positions earn more money than a third of households in America combined, Quartz reported Thursday.
The amount of wealth possessed by the 17 picks, at least $9.5 billion, is greater than the 43 million least wealthy households in America.”
On an unrelated topic, I just finished installing a dimmer switch on the kitchen light (over the table) without electrocuting myself, starting a fire-or doing it upside down or backwards. Yay me. The only wrinkle was that it is a 3-way switch and hence slightly more complicated than just a straight swap.

Also have been back and forth with people that say, “Well the heat will thaw out all that land that has been covered by ice and snow, so more land to cultivate!”. To which I try to explain to them that that might be true in 100 years or so, but right off it will be barren land with no topsoil suitable for cultivation.

Be careful. We’ve had some serious problems with Dreamhost recently. We were totally unable to update the installations of WP, or the plug-ins, or hell, even to upload a new picture.
The .tmp directory had filled up, and they had to go in an manually delete everything in it because reasons.

Heh. I just did a Google search for “what causes a web server to fill up a temp directory” and the first entry was this: Link
Shared servers with other users not cleaning up their directories cause them to fill and lock up. I understand the issue. That is one reason I do monthly backups of all my files for the site and daily backups of SQL databases (weekly for sites that are less critical, like a business site with no blog or forum).
If I ever have a site go down, I have everything to bring it up again…hopefully. Going to the next level of private hosting would prevent that.
