I didn’t watch the presser, but followed here.

What I’m not seeing is the Q&A with the reporters. Was it that boring? Or is that what you were reporting - POTUS answers to their Q’s?

Would’ve thought there would have been at least on radical question about Trump and conflicts of interest.

I don’t think there was a single question about Trump’s conflicts of interest. The comments you read were mostly about the Q&A section - Obama’s remarks before that were basically a list of his administration’s achievements, with nothing about Trump.

That’s an understatement. Not only do we have the totally corrupt and ethically bankrupt Trump, we also have his equally corrupt and ethically bankrupt kids, and the cherry on top of the shit sundae is the equally corrupt and ethically bankrupt Jared Kushner.

Every one of these assholes is going to be making policy decisions for the country and enriching themselves beyond their wildest fever dreams.

Meanwhile the GOP at both state and federal levels will ignore all of this because they’ll be doing their best to take us back to the 1800s while the media stands around scratching their asses, looking for balance.

I have said it before, but given what we know now about how Vladimir Putin was directly involved in the DNC hacking incidents, and now that both the CIA and FBI are in total agreement that this was the case, it’s high time for them to start *publicly* pursuing the next piece - that being whether the Trump campaign, and more importantly, Donald Trump himself were involved in the coordination and dissemination of these attacks. There’s way, way too much pointing to an indication that this was indeed the case.

Interesting comment from a friend’s thread on Facebook. It sort of explains the needle that our intel agencies need to thread.

They have the evidence and it’s already circulating to anyone with the clearance. The data isn’t the classified part, it’s the source of collection which in itself is dangerous to expose. A.P.T 28, and A.P.T. 29, known GRU cyber attack platforms, (Code named Cozy bear and Fancy Bear by Western intelligence organizations) are the known source of the Guccifer 2 and DCLeaks placements. This isn’t just from the mail hacks, it’s also for the voter system hacks and its confirmation is not only US Intelligence and Law Enforcement but also from foreign Intelligence agencies as well. This is FISA court level shit, and if the NSA has a Trump connection, what’s taking them so long is figuring out how to prosecute a presumptive President elect for treason without revealing how deep the cyber surveillance extends.

Watch a movie like “Delta Force” or “God’s Not Dead” and you understand why his followers support Trump. The fucking Republicans did everything possible to delegimitize Obama not only as President but as a fellow American to their asshole base. They own Trump and all the shit he’s done. The many NeverTrumps were and are a bunch of cowards with a few exceptions. Many of them since Trump’s “won” have shown that their real concern wasn’t Trump’s policies but their fear that Trump might lose and tarnish the Republican/conservative brand. That’s no longer a concern since he’s President Elect. With the exception of people like Ana Navarro, Evan McMullin, and Rick Wilson, they’re all kissing his ring.

Took the words right out of my head :/ Except I’m thinking this is it. Downstairs, when I said I hoped for a “bombshell”, people asked, what could that possibly be? I was thinking along the lines of the following:

1) Whatever kompromat the Russians have on trump/GOP somehow got found by US intel and is leaked (imagine it’s video of trump with a seriously underage girl - even a large chunk of his supporters would be repelled by that, unless they’re even more deplorable than we ever thought possible)

2) Some other sort of definitive proof that Russia either tampered with vote results (though this has been denied), or audio/video of trump otherwise colluding with Putin outright

(though I must confess #2 might not make a dent with his supporters, since they luuuvs themselves some Putin)

In any event, I expected/hoped something new might leak and then this press conference would be to address it. Didn’t happen.

Reminds me what the biggest argument in favor of single payer is, when you have to sit and play the “is my doctor in this network or that one or that one or…” (It appears the answer right now is none of them, thanks for playing.)

((And yes, this is absolutely a fault of the way we do private insurance and not the result of Obamacare at all. That we have options? That is because of Obamacare, and I appreciate it.))

My doctor, who I do like, is not in the Kaiser program. Neither is his.

This is hopefully short term. If we were looking at longer term, maybe we would swap. Unclear. But the plan is he’ll get whatever health plan the new place has when we can and cross our fingers that both our doctors are in the new plan. As has always been the case with employer provided health insurance.

So trivial but so fucking weird. I mean we are not in the 1880’s when daughters served as hostesses.

Such a blatant slap in the face to Melania to give it up to Ivanka.

What we have in Trump is someone who is so unprecedented. Okay, yes a lot of us or our parents or grandparents feared Reagan. I still remember my Dad telling me he laughed when he first saw a Reagan sticker and his Dad telling him that he would move to Canada if Reagan was elected- we never found out if he was true to his word since he died the winter before Reagan won but my grandfather was an educated man who had spent his career working for the NLRB and had witnessed the rise of Nixon as a federal worker and Reagan scared him that much.

Dinesh isn’t just bigoted towards Obama,s he’s downright personally nasty too. He made that one fucked up comment about Obama’s parents. The dude has some deep, deep issues. I don’t think we’re going to be hearing too much of him until 2020 though when he makes “Dem Nominee’s America”, another pathetic attempt at a documetnary. At least Michael Moore’s documentaries have variety to them. Dinesh is like Jerome Corsi, doing the same movie just on a different person every four or eight years.

“Russia is a petrostate. It’s the number one gas exporter and number two oil exporter in the world, but it’s economy is otherwise stagnant and out-of-date. Those oil and gas assets are controlled by a small number of oligarchs gathered around Putin, the former head of the KGB. Those oligarchs may be the one group of investors who stands to lose the most from the popping of the Carbon Bubble.
Russia’s major national asset is their potential to develop Arctic oil fields opened up by climate change — which won’t happen if investors pull out of oil. If it’s obvious that this oil is unburnable, there’s no point in building all those oil-drilling platforms and pipelines. But if the perception is that the Carbon Bubble won’t pop for decades, then getting one’s hands on millions of barrels of Arctic oil will pump valuations way up. By one estimate, these oil fields could be worth at least $500 billion.
I don’t have any special insight into what Russia did or didn’t do, but if you’re looking for a reason why they would want to disrupt our election, there’s 500 billion of them.”

Which Obama stated in a couple of sentences today; to paraphrase: ‘Russia has nothing but oil—they don’t make anything, they don’t innovate….’

Historically speaking, it’s easy to vote fascists and totalitarians into political power.

The hard part is getting them out of power, because once there, they change the rules to prevent their removal - which usually starts by their disenfranchising entire groups of people, and by the suppression of any dissent - typically by violent means.

Tomgram: Michael Klare, Donald Trump’s Energy Nostalgia and the Path to Hell

Scroll through Donald Trump’s campaign promises or listen to his speeches and you could easily conclude that his energy policy consists of little more than a wish list drawn up by the major fossil fuel companies: lift environmental restrictions on oil and natural gas extraction, build the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines, open more federal lands to drilling, withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, kill Obama’s Clean Power Plan, revive the coal mining industry, and so on and so forth ad infinitum. In fact, many of his proposals have simply been lifted straight from the talking points of top energy industry officials and their lavishly financed allies in Congress.

If, however, you take a closer look at this morass of pro-carbon proposals, an obvious, if as yet unnoted, contradiction quickly becomes apparent. Were all Trump’s policies to be enacted — and the appointment of the climate-change denier and industry-friendly attorney general of Oklahoma, Scott Pruitt, to head the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests the attempt will be made — not all segments of the energy industry will flourish. Instead, many fossil fuel companies will be annihilated, thanks to the rock-bottom fuel prices produced by a colossal oversupply of oil, coal, and natural gas.

Indeed, stop thinking of Trump’s energy policy as primarily aimed at helping the fossil fuel companies (although some will surely benefit). Think of it instead as a nostalgic compulsion aimed at restoring a long-vanished America in which coal plants, steel mills, and gas-guzzling automobiles were the designated indicators of progress, while concern over pollution — let alone climate change — was yet to be an issue.

If you want confirmation that such a devastating version of nostalgia makes up the heart and soul of Trump’s energy agenda, don’t focus on his specific proposals or any particular combination of them. Look instead at his choice of ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as his secretary of state and former Governor Rick Perry from oil-soaked Texas as his secretary of energy, not to mention the carbon-embracing fervor that ran through his campaign statements and positions. According to his election campaign website, his top priority will be to “unleash America’s $50 trillion in untapped shale, oil, and natural gas reserves, plus hundreds of years in clean coal reserves.” In doing so, it affirmed, Trump would “open onshore and offshore leasing on federal lands, eliminate [the] moratorium on coal leasing, and open shale energy deposits.” In the process, any rule or regulation that stands in the way of exploiting these reserves will be obliterated.

If all of Trump’s proposals are enacted, U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will soar, wiping out the declines of recent years and significantly increasing the pace of global warming. Given that other major GHG emitters, especially India and China, will feel less obliged to abide by their Paris commitments if the U.S. heads down that path, it’s almost certain that atmospheric warming will soar beyond the 2 degree Celsius rise over pre-industrial levels that scientists consider the maximum the planet can absorb without suffering catastrophic repercussions. And if, as promised, Trump also repeals a whole raft of environmental regulations and essentially dismantles the Environmental Protection Agency, much of the progress made over recent years in improving our air and water quality will simply be wiped away, and the skies over our cities and suburbs will once again turn gray with smog and toxic pollutants of all sorts.

Back in 2002, Robert Ebel of the Center for Strategic and International Studies put the matter succinctly: “Oil fuels more than automobiles and airplanes. Oil fuels military power, national treasuries, and international politics… [It is] a determinant of well being, national security, and international power for those who possess [it] and the converse for those who do not.”

Read the whole thing.

There must be. I can’t believe that the outgoing administration would just stand back and let this shit happen.

Hoping for leaks at this point. We can’t just let democracy die.

I’m so fucking sad that I even just typed that.

I’ve come to acceptance that the republic implodes and fractures irreparably. And with the way the Republican Party has abdicated themselves of any fealty to the Constitution, it’s just as well.

It’s kinda sad that President Obama likely gave the last ever farewell address for a POTUS. He probably knows it as well.

It sounds like it’s all dependant on Trump and Putin breaking OPEC’s back. Honestly, my money’s on OPEC.

Interesting. I have mixed feelings about OPEC power, but you may be right. Another misplaced bet, IMO, is in trying to ruffle China’s feathers. Yes, right now they have several cities in critical status WRT pollution. But they are throwing their might into a clean energy future for just that very reason. Trump has seriously hitched our wagon to the wrong horse.

Yes, right now they have several cities in critical status WRT pollution. But they are throwing their might into a clean energy future for just that very reason. Trump has seriously hitched our wagon to the wrong horse.

China currently heavily depends on coal for its electrical supply, but is also aggressively building non-fossil fuel energy sources, including nuclear, solar and hydroelectric. Its ultramodern high-speed rail network, which ties the country together, requires reliable electrical supplies, for one thing. The government is not going to risk a multi-trillion-dollar infrastructure to sketchy electrical supplies.

At the same time, though government officials try their best to quash reports of dangerous pollution levels, social media platforms like Sina Weibo and WeChat enable average citizens to post photos and messages, even as prior ones are scrubbed from view. Realistically, Beijing cannot just let pollution levels go uncontrolled, because the Chinese people do not have that kind of tolerance anymore.

China’s leadership are for the most part technocrats. They understand science and technology, and they know climate change is a real thing and a real risk to the safety of their country. They know how to play the long game, too, far better than Russia or the USA.

Vanity Fair is the latest news organization to profit from President-elect Donald Trump’s Twitter ire.

The Condé Nast magazine has seen its subscriptions rise 100 fold Thursday after Donald Trump tweeted that the publication was “way down, big trouble, dead.” Within 24 hours, Vanity Fair added 13,000 subscribers.

This is the highest number of subscriptions sold in a single day ever at Condé Nast, according to a spokesperson.

The Nation: Why Are the Media Taking the CIA’s Hacking Claims at Face Value?
Despite the CIA’s uninspiring record for the past 70 years, the media are defending the agency for all it’s worth.

From the article:

Cyber-security expert Jeffrey Carr has observed that “there is ZERO technical evidence to connect those Russian-speaking hackers to the GRU, FSB, SVR, or any other Russian government department.”

And he knows this how, exactly?

RinaX  Dec 16, 2016 • 9:46:51pm

Right around Thanksgiving, I found myself in bed with what I thought was just a really bad cold. When I was still sick when I went back to work the next week, and after various occurrences of people flat-out telling me to my face “Wow, you look terrible!”, I finally went to a doctor. It turned out that I had a really bad case of bronchitis, borderline pneumonia. This week is the first week that I’ve been anything close to well. So I’ve only been following various news on a surface level, which was probably good for me (Linda McMahon wtf??). Prior to getting sick, I was in a state of numb acceptance about everything. Maybe it’s the hangover from all of the meds I was on, but I”m finally feeling some anger and passion again.

All of that brings me to today, which brought out some other feelings that I’ve been trying to put aside, and that is a visceral disdain for the so-called left. Yep, I’m about to go a little scorched here, but watching all of the complaining today because President Obama did not go scorched earth on Trump, and rescue this dumbass country from itself just made me laugh. The man has been pleading with us for eight years to take control of our own fate with our votes. When the Russia “bombshell” dropped this week, I was pretty much like, “Didn’t we know this back in October?”. I guess I missed something, but nothing about this revelation ever led me to believe that this was leading to some grand plan to deny Trump the presidency, so there was nothing to be disappointed about in his press conference today.

There is no cohesive independent platform on the left that helps shape state legislatures and influence national policy. The right has always had that, and when they suffered losses at all national levels in 2008, they simply buckled down, communicated, and chipped away steadily at the state level while we were complaining about the ACA and primarying Democratic senate candidates when we should have listened when President Obama said that we were just at the starting line. A lot of people thought that we were finished, and splintered off into their own group that supported their own causes that they cared the most about.

I’m guessing a lot of people were slapped in the face today with the reality that, no, President Obama isn’t going to continue to be President of Democrats. He’s done, and the left is going to have to deal with the fact that they still have no solid foundation to connect all of us. This race for the DNC chair seems to be shaping up into the same pattern of us finding The One to rally around, and then rebel against once they get elected. The reason that I don’t have much faith left is because I don’t see anything to show me that ANY lessons have been learned to the point that anything is going to be different among Democrats.

I’ll be honest, I’m getting a vicious delight out of a lot of today’s complaining. Really, what the fuck? It’s shitty that Russia interfered. But I think that it was only able to have success because of our own failures, be it by our party, our media, or the electorate. And to be clear, I include myself in that. I make sure to vote in every single election, state or local, city council and all. But, I made the choice that I didn’t have the free time to contribute more to my local party due to family obligations. And the fact that many most likely had to make the same choice as me leads to the reality that local organizations don’t have the consistent support that they need. So that’s the part that I have to look at, to see what more I can do besides making fiery posts on a blog.

I’ve spoken to friends about it, and I’m intrigued on a number of levels. It’s origins growing out of fighting Nazis seems applicable, and its emphasis on situational awareness and fighting only as a last resort (and the attitude of efficient and brutal attack should fighting be inevitable) all make good sense to me.

i just got over a nasty cold that hung around around more than a week. Started with a sore throat, then progressed to an endlessly drippy nose and a cough. No fever really, but all I wanted to do was sleep. So I called off three days of classes last week. Symptoms started to fade a few days ago, and now I’m pretty much back to normal.

I’ve had bronchitis, and I know what it feels like. What I had was an especially stubborn head cold. I just had to tough it out.

There’s a nasty norovirus strain going through the UK, I heard. Projectile vomiting and watery diarrhea, which lasts two or three days, then all fine. Charming.

As broken as our political system seems at the moment, it’s light-years ahead of what most countries around the world have. I hear the warnings from Sarah Kendzior and others, and I admit that I fear Trump’s administration could be a disaster in so many ways, but as long as there is resistance and opposition to the bullshit he and his worker bees will attempt, America will survive.

Even so, Kendzior is on the mark. Complacency in the face of Trump & Co. could be our downfall. We need to remind everyone not to trust anything he does or says, because Trump is a pathological liar, and his advisors and Cabinet officers are not much better.

My bronchitis was stealthy. I didn’t even feel that bad, went to work OK, but the coughing would just not go away. I figured it was my seasonal allergies acting up. This was just before I had to go for my physical exam to come to China. My doc said, we’re going to postpone a chest X-ray because you’ve got bronchitis. I said, what? Probably saved me from it getting any worse.

All these stories are not helping. I’ve had this cough since Halloween.

But I did go to the doctor two weeks ago and they think it is just post-nasal drip getting into my chest and so that is my story. Also it hasn’t interfered with my running.

That was my problem exactly. Very little congestion, but a lot of leakage down my throat. At its worst, I couldn’t sleep worth shit, but I could breathe (in between coughs) just fine. When I could sleep through the night, I knew I was on the mend.

The coughing is still sporadic and hasn’t really woken me up at all. (I’ve been good friends with a decongestant/cough suppressant combo for the past few weeks, but honestly it seems to make little difference one way or another.)

Well the good news is I have a doctor’s visit scheduled for my physical in January, so if this is still hanging around I’ll get it checked then. Hahaha. (It’s the day before I leave for the half.)

Honestly more worried about the plane flights on Sunday, since I seem to be heading in favor of more congestion again.

We’ve been joking that we should move the snowmen a few feet closer to the Oval Office every day to see if anyone noticed. Then we realized the snowmen were too heavy to easily lift. But finally this morning before the President came to the office, some helpful staff—I won’t say who—moved all the snowmen so each one was peeking through a different window into the Oval. This photo was taken this afternoon as the President signed end-of-the-year bills.

I have a collection of Studio Ghibli films that I must rewatch. The opening to Laputa: Castle in the Sky, which had its 30th anniversary this year!

Laputa - Castle In The Sky (1986) - Main Theme by Joe Hisaishi

And the closing song, “Carrying You”, which always brought me to tears during the closing credits, without exception, during the many times I watched this as an anime fan:

Laputa Castle In The Sky (Ending Song) - Joe Hisaishi

Trivia:. Hayao Miyazaki himself got songwriting credit for this.

I really need a break. Can’t make myself take it, though.

[If it’s snowing hard, it’s sometimes better to take HWY 30 from Rawlins to Laramie. Years ago, when I-80 was being planned, all the locals told the Fed Hwy Admin to build the I-80 following the Hwy 30 route because of the heavy snowfall close to the mountain range but the Feds knew better and build I-80 right at the north end of the Snowy Range. Feds said that route would save 10 miles of construction. The first winter I-80 was open, the total loss from the several multi-vehicle accidents was more than double the extra cost of building along the Hwy 30 route. I’m sure you noticed the snow fences along I-80. Twenty years ago installing the snow fences cost about $20 per lineal foot and there’s miles of snow fences. Stay safe!! ]

Saw Rogue One:
SPOILERS:

It was pretty damn good.

Obviously it’s not hard sci-fi so a few times I felt plucked out of it and the small arms exchanges were typical Star Wars fare (stormtrooper difficulty setting).
The dialogue was predictably clunky in parts as well.
But goddamn if it wasn’t trying to be as gritty a portrayal of an established if sometimes wavering galactic rebellion. The fog of war creates a friendly fire mishap, there are factions within the rebellion that don’t see eye-to-eye, shady practices amongst operatives and a pervading sense of desperation as the full scope of the Imperial Death Star secret weapon becomes known. In that sense, the vacillation of the rebels between continued resistance and submission is wholly understandable.
The CG characters (Cushing’s Tarkin, back from the dead) felt a little rubbery, but the resemblance and character was so convincing that the subtle flickers of malicious satisfaction that cross his face rewards your skeptical scrutiny. Plus there’s a familiar face at the end which makes your heart beat at double-time.
Plus, in spite of all the space-boxes used as convenient cover, the shitty imperial marksmen and the slow but gorgeously-rendered destruction wrought by the Death Star, nearly everyone you’ve gotten to know in the course of the movie doesn’t survive.
In this sense, it is the antithesis of the Star Wars movie where heroism confers some kind of invulnerablility.
The scrambling terror of the final battle in orbit, and the clever use of ionising-torpedo deploying Y-wings in conjunction with a near-suicidal corvette make for a different rendition of the familiar capital ship/fighter repertoire.

Finally, the last five minutes of action in the film redeem Darth Vader’s poor reputation earned in Lucas’ botched prequels.
Also, for the dedicated fan, easter eggs abound.

Spencer is button-down enough that he could potentially win in Montana without a strong challenger. He looks “normal” and people who are not really aware of his past would vote for him because he looks respectable.

Who knows? Mr. Trump has shown you don’t have to be “politically correct” to win an election; perhaps Wonkette’s famous jokes would work in her favour (I guess that depends on the sense of humour of Montanans).

Another one of Mr. Trump’s lovable fans sent another seizure-inducing video to Kurt Eichenwald of Newsweek. (Another reason I am not on Twitter. A couple years ago a bunch of fun-loving nuts over at 4chan did that to a comment board at the Epilepsy Foundation. Many of us were not amused.)

The whole thread at Twitter is Mr. Eichenwald rightly fuming over that.

Well, Twitter is likely immune due to its terms of service. However, according to the Twitter string, the attacker knew what he was doing (the video said he deserved a seizure).

I am not sure if that could rise to the level of criminality, but Mr. Eichenwald most certainly has enough money to sue (and get information from Twitter).

As for Rebecca, Montana was the first state to elect a woman to Congress, in 1916 (four years before women had the right to vote).

Past several days been working on my iMac … decided to finally get off of Snow Leopard, which was 5 generations behind the current release of OS X (now of course just called “MacOS”).

My early 2008 machine can’t take the latest OS so I went to the latest El Capitan.

To do that I needed to add more RAM but my machine only was spec’d by Apple for 4GB (I only had 3GB, which used to be enough for me, until the bloatware of the past couple of years, such as Chrome.)

Anyway, Other World Computing makes a 4GB module which they say will work to bring the total up to 6GB. So I got it and…. the dreaded three beeps (in Mac firmware design that is a hardware failure.)

It turns out that the 4GB module only works with the OEM spec’d modules from Apple, of which I had one 1GB (which came with the computer.) In 2008 I added a 2GB Crucial module, which worked fine… but it won’t work in the OWC 4GB module.

So I am now left with 5GB (4+1)… which is working just fine.

And El Capitan is working well too.

This iMac is almost 9 years old, but it keeps working. And the way it is now ought to last me a few more years. At least until El Capitan becomes so old to not be supported by software anymore.

I know it is common for some to rag on Apple for the price of their products, but my experience has shown me that they make excellent products, on the whole.

There are some design nits I have with El Capitan, but nothing to make me stop using it.

I have a 2009 27” iMac that is plugging along just fine, too. It at least has a 16 GB max; I have 12 GB in it. I did just have to replace the video card which was quite exciting. ~$400 on eBay for a new (not refurbished) and instructions from iFixit and it’s as good as new. Apple won’t repair anything that old and I was too lazy to talk to any of the local Mac shops to do the repair.

Definitely FOR kaijus waking up.

re: #286 freetoken

Last year I was playing guitar, turned, and knocked a beer over on to my Macbook Pro (2010). I quickly drained and cleaned, but no dice. A few days later I brushed the internals with isopropyl alcohol, still no dice. I put in on the shelf, bit the bullet, and got a new computer. Six months later, my child took it down off the shelf and “voom” it started right up. Only problem is the number 6 doubles with one keystroke (not triples, heh), so you have to delete a 6 sometimes. Working quite well, and the kids have a computer.

Remember the infamous Prenda Law trolls? Well, Justice grinds slowly, but does’t necessarily stop…

Ars Techncia: Prenda Law “copyright trolls” Steele and Hansmeier arrested

The two lawyers said to be the masterminds behind Prenda Law, Paul Hansmeier and John Steele, have been arrested and charged with a multimillion-dollar extortion scheme.

The two lawyers were charged Wednesday with an 18-count indictment (PDF), describing allegations of fraud, perjury, and money laundering perpetrated between 2011 and 2014. The charges were unsealed and announced today and first reported by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Both Hansmeier, 35, and Steele, 45, were arrested earlier today before the indictment was made public.
“The defendants in this case are charged with devising a scheme that casts doubt on the integrity of our profession,” said US Attorney Andrew Luger in a statement. “The conduct of these defendants was outrageous—they used deceptive lawsuits and unsuspecting judges to extort millions from vulnerable defendants. Our courts are halls of justice where fairness and the rule of law triumph, and my office will use every available resource to stop corrupt lawyers from abusing our system of justice.”

The indictment explains how the defendants “used sham entities to obtain copyrights to pornographic movies—some of which they filmed themselves—and then uploaded those movies to file-sharing websites in order to lure people to download the movies.”

Prenda Law sued hundreds of people for copyright infringement, accusing them of illegally downloading pornographic movies. In 2013, US District Judge Otis Wright sanctioned the firm in a Los Angeles case, along with Steele and Hansmeier personally, saying they had perpetrated a fraud on the court. Wright also referred the case to criminal investigators.

Wright’s damning order set off a domino effect, with Prenda and its affiliated lawyers facing a long series of judicial sanctions and fee orders in courts around the country. Steele and Hansmeier fought many of the sanctions, but earlier this year, panels of appellate judges at both the 7th Circuit and 9th Circuit ruled against them and said they must pay for hundreds of thousands of dollars in attorneys’ fees to defense lawyers who fought their claims.
State Bar investigators took action as well, filing complaints that ended this year with both lawyers having their licenses to practice law suspended. Hansmeier, who built a new legal practice suing small businesses over violations of the Americans With Disabilities Act, filed for bankruptcy last year.

Generally, they say that we should ignore things like Comey, Russia/Wikileaks, all the free media coverage of Trump, the media’s obsession with emails - all things which we know for absolute certain swayed at least some voters.

And we can’t talk about Trump’s openly racist, Islamophobic, misogynist campaign and the fact that 46% of Americans saw that and were okay with it.

And we can’t talk about Trump’s complete indifference to truth, his repeated lies, or the fact that 46% of Americans don’t know or don’t care about it.

And we can’t talk about his threats to the media and individual journalists, even private citizens, or his unleashing of his flying monkeys to harrass them when they dispeased him, or the fact that 46% of Americans were okay with that.

No, we’re supposed to focus on Clinton’s failure to appeal to the people who are okay with racism, serial sexual assault, bullying, and flagrant and continual lying.

A lot of people talk about how much they want a viable third party to change the shape of American politics. One nice thing about a two-party system, however, is that it makes it easy to determine a majority. It’d be nice if we could find ways to increase informed involvement in the system we have, rather than people throwing their votes away on unicorns and glitter and diluting the current political system.

The left has a problem. So many think bigotry disguised as “economic anxiety” is okay and it doesn’t help a damn that Clinton!s challenger pushes it.

I think it’s more a question of bigotry MIXED WITH economic anxiety. And that’s the problem - the loss of well-paid factory jobs in the old Rust Belt, or coal mining jobs in Appalachia are both real, but it wasn’t immigrants who took them, or China that stole the factories, or ‘Obama’s war on coal’ that closed the mines. It was the march of progress - more efficient production methods, cheaper and cleaner fuels.

But if your job went away, and with it your economic security, it’s MUCH easier to blame a person, or a group, or a country, than to blame market forces or technology. You can’t punish a market force.

He just called. The truck was in the process of passing him on the left and started jack-knifing with about ten feet of the trailer to get past him. It swung right and slammed into his driver side door, popping his windshield and crushing the door about halfway into his leg room on the driver’s side.

He’s a burly old Irishman, and I think the luck of the Irish was riding with him today. He said if he wasn’t in his XTerra and in a smaller vehicle, he’d probably be dead right now.

I pointed out earlier in the week that, while the Dems don’t have a satisfactory policy answer to this, the GOP’s answer is the exact opposite of satisfactory - but it SOUNDS good, at least to the frightened WWC.

re: #355 Blind Frog Belly White

I’ve about had it with the smarmy, “What Democrats Need To Do” takes on this year’s election.

Sure. Cater to the scum of the earth while you run but keep from upsetting the good folks and then when you win…pivot!

“snap” (fingers)…just like that!

I spent most of the day with righteous indignation wanting to fight the world after Obama’s presser, when it became clear he couldn’t simply wave a magic wand and will this all away. I got it in my head that ‘yeah, the fight’s up to us now, we gotta do this’.

Woke up today with just no fight in me. This shit is happening and no amount of mockery of one of his tweet typos is going to stop this utter fucking sack of shit and his cronies from burning this country down, it seems like. And so many goddamn leading Dems are learning the exact wrong lessons and ready to shelf a lot of the people most in need and danger during a Trump administration off to the side because Democrats ALWAYS seem to learn the exact goddamn wrong lessons after a loss.

I just want to burn something down right now and cry by the ashes.

And 2016’s callous indifference continues.

Henry Heimlich, inventor of Heimlich maneuver, dead at 96

Dr. Henry Heimlich, namesake of the maneuver that has saved the lives of an estimated 100,000 potential choking victims, has died. The famed Hyde Park physician was 96.

“He regularly dazzled me with his vitality, even at his age, and his commitment to making sure things were done the right way,” recalled Patrick Ward, executive director of the Deaconess Associations Foundation and a collaborator in the Heimlich Heroes program creating a classroom curriculum for teaching the maneuver to sixth graders. “His passion for helping people never wavered.”

I’m just going to suggest you neither burn anything down nor cry. I’ve said before that waiting is the hard part. We can come up with all sorts of horrible scenarios-and I’m not seeing a lot of great outcomes, myself-but we really have no idea what will happen. There is nothing concrete to fight back against yet, but we want to do something.

In another month or so there will be concrete things to deal with, and in the meantime I think such contributions as we can make to worthy causes, and random acts of kindness are good.

I grew up in the flats of central Illinois where the drifting is constant. The medians roadsides were littered with 4WDs whose drivers had false confidence.

Indeed. I think we all want to take pre-emptive action, but right now there’s very little to take action against besides the fact that he’s going to take office on Inauguration Day.

And that does work on some of his followers if you’re looking to wind them up.But past that we can only wait.

That’s the part that’s getting me down the most though. He’s already done all this ridiculous damage without actually being in power yet, and we can’t really do anything about it. Who knows that’s going to happen soon as he gets inaugurated.

One other issue with 4WD drive is once they regain traction, they will help propel you in whatever direction you are pointed when the traction catches. They can help drive you right off the road before you know what happened.

That’s why you often see them off the inside of a turn. The vehicle pitches in the direction of the turn (right turn slews right) and then once it hits the berm there is a good chance there is some traction there (snow, gravel, rougher surface than the road, etc.) then all that drive takes you right on off the road…efficiently.

The worst thing about the American car owner is they do not want to learn about all that technology they have…well any more than the cool commercial they saw told them.

This is a classic case of not learning from history.

The Industrial Revolution caused much the same displacement of craftsmen’s living. Machines took over their jobs, and those machines were in cities which became mega- crowded slums. Much of the disorder and revolutions or near revolutions in the 19th and early 20th Century was caused by this displacement.

Eventually we wised up and dealt with the problem through things like decent education, minimum wages and a social safety net.

Yet here we go again.

It’s been said that in the future - in the not-too-distant-future, in fact - that a whole lotta jobs will be automated away. And what sort of disorder will be caused by that level of mass unemployment across the socioeconomic spectrum?
