I’ve talked with only two neighbors about the election. Both of course voted for Trump. One is a classic single-issue gun nut. He wanted to make sure that no one was going to come for his weapons. He’s been telling me about this concern for nearly thirty years, starting when he had only a rusty old deer rifle and a beat-up .410 shotgun for snakes. Since then he’s put together an arsenal that would outfit a platoon of special forces, and no one has taken a single piece away, but then reality doesn’t matter to these folks.

The other believes that the schoolteachers right here in Bossier Parish, Louisiana, are dedicated to recruiting the next generation of gays, and that Trump will prevent this. I wonder if he actually knows even one teacher in the parish, since they don’t strike me as such a radical group.

But the real killer is that I just learned my longtime lady friend voted for Trump. Her reasoning was the classically idiotic one that Hillary was just as bad. She’s always been pretty conservative, so we usually just avoid politics, but this is a stunner. I feel like some Jewish guy in 1930s Germany whose shiksa girlfriend just told him Hitler and the opposition were pretty much the same.

Is this relationship death, or what?

So here’s the thing, I’m white. I’m pretty well off. I value actual democracy more than I do hanging onto white people running things. Melanin doesn’t cause people to try to destroy the country and electing people with more of it just gives a wider range of experiences and opinions. Same could be said for the lack of a y chromosome.

We have to give those Protestants some credit: the notion that all people should be equal under the law originated in the doctrine that all people are equal before God.

Nope, I just see him at the store on occasion. My wife works there and recently thanked him for his music, which he politely thanked her for. That will make her TS worshiping brother very jealous when he finds out…lol! Tommy and his wife live up by Gold Beach, about 30 miles north of Brookings, and frequent our department store as it’s the closest large store for them other than heading to Bandon (about 55 miles north of Gold Beach). My wife is a violinist and I’m guitarist so when we say we appreciate music, we mean it! My wife loves Styx and while I saw them in concert back in the 70’s, I like his later work.

One other bit o’ gossip to contrast with the Senior Discount Days… he shops for pants in the Young Men’s department. :)

Trump’s still fixated on the election, which again suggests he’s trying to divert attention from other more important things.

He’s skipping security briefings by his own admission while world events continue to fly past at a rate he simply can’t comprehend. The election? Yeah, you won the electoral college. We knew that on Election Night. That was more than a month ago. But Trump is so insecure that he’s got to try and convince people that he simultaneously won the popular vote (he didn’t) and that he was just so much smarter than everyone else in the room (he isn’t).

What he did do was con enough people in enough places to support the racist, bigoted, ignoramus. They’re going to be in for a reckoning when Trump undermines everything that these people supposedly supported Trump for doing - the wall, jobs, security, all of it.

I missed out on Charles’ last post, but the title reminded me that I had to block someone yesterday who was suggesting that if only we find Jesus, everything will be okay. Ummm.. I’m Jewish. Not. Gonna. Happen. And this person was basically proving my point that Trump and his supporters are more than willing and able to trample all over the 1A to further their absolutist/authoritarian agenda.

These people are dangerous and it’s time to take them - and the GOP as the threat they truly are.

The GOP puts lives in danger. Period. Full Stop.

We see it with their ongoing attacks on access to health care - repealing Obamacare with nothing as a replacement to the attacks on access to abortion and birth control. This is all about control, power, misogyny, and it put lives in danger. This isn’t a pro-life agenda, but rather a forced birth one where women are meant to be nothing more than reproductive. Their utility and value to society is limited to reproduction so that these angry white guys can feel better about themselves.

Far from being a president who expands power and is using EOs to trump Congressional obstructionism, Obama’s actually pushed a more limited view of the powers of the presidency - a position far more in line with the Founders than the so called constitutionalists in the GOP who are obstructing Obama’s nominee for Scalia’s replacement by refusing to even hold a hearing or a vote on Merrick Garland. That’s absolutely unprecedented in US history, but these right wing nitwits think that this is exactly what needs to be done. It’s the absolute pursuit of power and crushing all those before them.

All that’s left is for the GOP to revel in the hearing of the lamentations of the women (and they’re working on that with all due haste).

The fact that Clinton’s press was relentlessly negative in the last two weeks of the campaign, in large part thanks to the FBI, while Trump’s press became much less negative, probably didn’t help. As Matthew Yglesias wrote, the email “scandal” was bullshit, but the “scandal” was almost the only thing people heard from the media about Clinton.

2 of these are hot rods of sorts but 4 appear to be fairly stock machines. In contrast, there are only 5 Chevrolet Vegas, all “specials” of one kind or another (V-8 conversions or the rare Cosworth types). There are no Chevrolet Chevettes at all, so that unlamented product may be almost gone as well as forgotten. I had 2 Chevettes. I still think it was a better car than the Vega but that bar could not be any lower.

We bought a ‘92 Accord in 2002 with 140k miles for $4000. It seemed too much at the time, but we got it to 250K before we opted for a used Nissan Quest for our growing family. I did have to replace CV joints and brakes once in those miles. Later I inherited a ‘92 Volvo. In some ways I loved that car, but I spent thousands keeping it going. Now we have a Civic.

The irony was that the attempt to protect Detroit through tariffs was just the fillip to get Subaru-Isuzu (at the time) to build in Lafayette, Honda into southern Ohio, and Toyota into Kentucky—followed of course by German and South Korean makers. So, in some ways, I guess it worked. Not so much for the union guys, though.

Actually, around here, which is similar to small towns all around, if your parents or grandparents weren’t born here, instead of the small town 5-20 miles away, you will never belong.

I managed that when I married my husband by ignoring it and smiling at everybody, and if they muttered behind my back, it was no skin off of it. I hope that eventually this country will grow up, but I probably won’t see it in my lifetime.

But battleground states will remain as such - FL, IN, IL, PA, OH, MI, VA, CO, etc. because they have value as higher population states.

How does this work out? Consider Wyoming. It has 3 EC votes. With its population, you’re talking about 1 EV for every ~180,000 residents.

California? It’s got over 37 million people and 55 EC votes. That translates to 1 EC vote for every 672,000+ residents. NY has a similar ratio. That gives the Wyoming residents more than 3x as much clout in the EC as California.

It means that candidates will go where the votes are - high population states. So places like Iowa, Delaware, NH have much less value in the general election.

But battleground states will remain as such - FL, IN, IL, PA, OH, MI, VA, CO, etc. because they have value as higher population states.

How does this work out? Consider Wyoming. It has 3 EC votes. With its population, you’re talking about 1 EV for every ~180,000 residents.

California? It’s got over 37 million people and 55 EC votes. That translates to 1 EC vote for every 672,000+ residents. NY has a similar ratio. That gives the Wyoming residents more than 3x as much clout in the EC as California.

This is a damn good point. Wyoming has one EV per 180,000 residents while California has one per 672,000. That’s a problem. I admit that making it just popular vote wouldn’t solve everything but it would be at least I feel in the principle of one man, one vote. Democratic states and regions shouldn’t be punished since they’re more densely populated.

It’s been the exact same size since a time when our population was less than half what it is now; more districts, with smaller population, would make it easier for a broader range of people to run for office. HSAs? That’s no help to someone who can’t afford to save money for health care in the first place.

Across state lines? Race to the bottom for minimum coverage that wont help most people. But they’ll claim it will give everyone cheaper coverage - apples to oranges comparison.

The CBO is already working to make sure that any ACA replacement plan offered by the GOP has to be an apples to apples comparison - it has to meet similar coverage requirements - and the GOP will fail this test miserably.

Gut the preexisting conditions or coverage for dependents through age 26? Those are two of the most popular provisions.

Individual responsibility for obtaining coverage (in the form of the taxes/penalties imposed by the ACA for failing to get coverage)? GOP now hates that even though they’re the ones who crafted the idea in the first place - as an alternative to the Clinton proposals back in the day.

The CBO/JCT continues to find that the ACA repeal will cost more than it saves, and yet the GOP pushes this as fiscal responsibility. Words have lost all meaning with the GOP.

But the base fact is that uninsured rate is lowest we’ve had as a direct result of the ACA. It would be lower still had states expanded Medicaid coverage but the GOP blocked that in many of the states that would have had the biggest benefit - Texas for one. So, hospitals and doctors in those places get saddled with higher costs because indigent care costs aren’t getting picked up by ACA coverages.

ACA also began process of making health care costs more transparent, but right now the biggest problem with health care costs (that have been rising but at a slower rate as compared to pre-ACA) is rising drug costs - see the Epipen gouging for instance.

There’s no easy answer there either - but the GOP doesn’t care about answers. It has easy to digest slogans - “REPEAL OBAMACARE!” - and the consequences aren’t spoken by them (and understood even less by their supporters).

Competition lowers prices?

The ACA marketplace is a marketplace where insurers get to put their product in competition with other insurers. It didn’t exist before the ACA. Some insurers have done well with the ACA. Others have dropped out because they aren’t making as much money as they want to make on those lines of business.

But that’s competition for you.

And if you’re looking to get insured through the marketplace, you can shop around in many of those states and find lower cost plans from those insurers if you might be willing to switch docs (which could happen even with your employer-based insurance when they change insurance companies, hike premiums, and pass costs on to the employee).

In fact, the ACA is more transparent with costs, plan coverages, and other metrics than employer-based insurance, so it’s easy for the GOP to holler about how the ACA costs are rising, death spiral, etc., ignoring that employer based coverages are rising b/c insurers are continuing to pass costs to insureds - higher drug costs being a major factor.

Easiest fix is to increase the size of the House from 435 so that big states have the same number of per capita congressmen as the smallest states, which would also increase their electoral votes. It doesn’t require a constitutional amendment, but the Democrats would have to regain control of Congress to pass the law.

The other college kids at the restaurant sure fit the pattern of lazy workers I found in the books, but I was too stupid to recognize that they were entitled pricks from frats and sororities who had to take summer courses because they couldn’t manage to pass regular class and that they were lazy because they probably had jobs locked in after college anyway. It really didn’t take me long to see through all of it. I can’t believe I wasted time on those stupid extended monologues….

I am probably in a minority of 1 here, but I am fine with the electoral college the way it is. We are the United States and I have no problem with the states themselves coming into play for the election.

Giving those smaller states a slightly louder voice just really doesn’t seem to be a problem to me especially since you basically still have to win most of them as a block to make much of a difference. It isn’t like those small red states are a monolith. Wyoming is very different from Alabama, Utah is nothing like Tennessee. I don’t think it should be that heavy of an ask for a presidential candidate to manage to pick up one or more of those states by actually addressing their concerns.

Meanwhile larger states like California and Texas and NY basically have a bullhorn all year long. If the voters of California decide they want to change emission standards they are in essence changing standards for the country because car makers aren’t going to make different models just for california. If Texas makes school book decisions the publishers make those changes and they become standards for large sections of the country etc.

I read most of Atlas Shrugged in between classes at college (I was commuting and would bring a book or my laptop to have something to do between classes), but I was older and knew enough history to realize how off a lot of her stuff was.

the size of the House of Representatives has been locked at 435 since 1929 with the Permanent Reapportionment Act of 1929. Ever since then, Congressional representation has been reapportioned based on relative population growth across the states, and not on growth in population.

When fixed at 435 Representatives (plus 96 Senators from 48 states), the population in the United States was 123,000,000. So, at the time, the average number of constituents per member of Congress was 231,000. That’s a constituency size smaller than all but three states today. The size has grown about 156 percent from 1930 to 2010.

When looking at Congressional delegations at the state level, we find the largest constituency size in 1930 was in New York with 267,000, and the smallest was found in Nevada with a constituency size of only 30,000.

The ACA marketplace is a marketplace where insurers get to put their product in competition with other insurers. It didn’t exist before the ACA. Some insurers have done well with the ACA. Others have dropped out because they aren’t making as much money as they want to make on those lines of business.

But that’s competition for you.

In America we are still sold on the notion that “personal freedom” means that you and your family, with limited income and assets, get to try to negotiate with multi-million/billion-dollar (inter)national corporations for terms of insurance coverage, employment or financial services…

A Massachusetts high school hockey program has had its season canceled because of what one administrator called a “toxic” culture of anti-Semitism among players.

The team had students from Keefe Regional Technical School and Marian High School , both in Framingham. Marian is an independent Catholic school.

Administrators started investigating Friday after they learned of anti-Semitic activity directed at one player. Letters were sent to parents Monday informing them of the decision.

The MetroWest Daily News reports that Keefe Principal Shannon Snow said the anti-Semitism was “not an isolated instance,” and that “an overall toxic and negative culture” permeated the team.

The Boston Globe reports that Marian Principal John Ermilio found “a pattern of locker room activity in which the players admitted to participating in these types of comments and actions.”

The irony was that the attempt to protect Detroit through tariffs was just the fillip to get Subaru-Isuzu (at the time) to build in Lafayette, Honda into southern Ohio, and Toyota into Kentucky—followed of course by German and South Korean makers. So, in some ways, I guess it worked. Not so much for the union guys, though.

Honda is in central Ohio. Marysville, which is about 30 miles northwest of Columbus. There was a reason for that too. Ohio had what was called the Ohio Transportation Research Center which was built back in the 60s for Ohio State University to test vehicles, etc. It has a huge 7+ mile oval with many lanes and progressive banking.

Honda was located just down the road from it so they had free reign to use the test facility. Honda had several plants in that area now.There is their engine facility, another car building plant and a motorcycle factory too. I know a few Honda engineers and workers being around racing and car stuff most of my career.

I used to manage our companies graphics shop and we used to do decals and graphics for a bunch of Honda of America engineers that also raced Honda cars. Honda had a program to help them with some bucks and even gave them garage space at the facility.

So one time making a delivery to a guy that was a Rally racer I was going across the bridge that gets you to the inside of the track and a big old Volvo Semi Trailer with all kinds of aero doodads on was whipping under the bridge and there was an Accord tucked up behind it doins some kind of high-speed areo testing or something. Pretty damn cool.

Thanks for the link. That’s interesting stuff. My geography is off, indeed. I knew a few Japanese families in Lexington, KY who worked not for Toyota directly but for parts makers in the area. They seemed to stretch between Honda and Toyota (and of course Toyota has a plant in southern Indiana, too). I toured the Toyota plant at Georgetown twice. No, the workers aren’t union. But probably better than anything else that might have come along in that area.

Don’t get me started on that stupid “chicken tax” instituted by LBJ in 1964 as a knee-jerk reaction to West Germany instituting a tariff on American chickens back then. It was originally meant to hit Volkswagen since they were selling the Kombi pickups in that time (split-window era still), but manifested itself into an act that affected the importation of compact pickups from overseas.

Because of this stupid tax, we are denied fuel-efficient compact pickups that are sold elsewhere, including the Ford Ranger with a turbodiesel engine of all things! Sure it helped protected jobs here in the U.S., but at the cost of stifling automotive innovation on the home front.

If only we could receive Thai-built compact pickups from the big automakers, we would be so much better off.

That is why I was a staunch supporter of the TPP deal to begin with, because it was the most serious legislation aimed at dismantling a relic of the Cold War once and for all.

I have traveled on many international and domestic airplane flights and listened to other passengers chatting with one another in various languages, yes including Arabic. No one ever caused a disturbance or was removed from the flight for speaking in their native language. I don’t believe it is a “thing” that happens on a regular basis.

WE DON’T KNOW WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED all we have is a narrative which may or may not be bogus, by a person who is a known prankster.

Maybe, just maybe, he was shouting at the top of his lungs (as sometimes people chatting on cellphones in public will do) at the same time that the flight crew was telling passengers to shut off all electronics in preparation for takeoff.

People who ignore the flight crew’s request to shut down electronics will be removed from the aircraft no matter what language they are chatting in.

This is just a speculation BECAUSE WE DON’T KNOW WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

But that was not socially or politically feasible. America was based on the idea that you did not need a fancy education: you just went to work, learned a specific job, did it well, gained seniority and you could live well, own a house and car, and maybe even a boat or a vacation home, and even put your kids through college.

DT won the Midwest and Middle America on the empty promise of bringing those sorts of jobs back.

We do know that this alleged situation has actually occured multiple times in the recent past. Basically, a person spoke Arabic, someone complained, Arabic speaker was removed. We know that has happened, and there has been no actual push to resolve that. We know Islamophobia is currently okay in America.

So sure we don’t know all the details here. We still need to make sure it’s not okay for people to complain about Arab speakers on airplanes. Or the policy should be to remove the complainer and reflight THEM.

In 2008 I was a passenger on a flight from Detroit to Frankfurt on which there was a large family, with 3 niqab’ed women, a pater familias dressed up in camo like Osama Bin Laden, and a bunch of children.

This family took a long time to settle down and take their seats, with the children constantly getting up and changing seats, even being passed down the rows over the heads of other passengers so the flight crew could not get an accurate head check.

Finally we took off. I never thought the family might be terrorists but I did suspect that they occupied more seats than they paid for.

The guy who got down here with a hose instead of a tube in his tire two weeks ago came back for another tube. This time, it is to replace the tube we put in two weeks ago. He has an adjustable wrench to do most of the work himself, but indoors, ‘cause it’s cold outside. He flipped his bike, and I brought out the hose we took out two weeks ago. He laughed, so I handed him a tube in a box and put the hose back in the trash.

I didn’t know that stuff until later. One summer between sophomore and junior year I rented a room outside DC while playing in a band and working full time in a bagel restaurant. At night I read whatever books I could get my hands on, and somehow found Rand. The other college kids at the restaurant sure fit the pattern of lazy workers I found in the books, but I was too stupid to recognize that they were entitled pricks from frats and sororities who had to take summer courses because they couldn’t manage to pass regular class and that they were lazy because they probably had jobs locked in after college anyway. It really didn’t take me long to see through all of it. I can’t believe I wasted time on those stupid extended monologues….

I saw the Rand books, and heard my school buddies talk about them. I shrugged and never read them.

Very liberal area. A lot is made about NOVA being liberal but I’d actually call it center-left whereas MC is more liberal.

Well of course. But how could he not be sensitive about the issues of drug use since they are killing drug users. He would have never had a career and a chance to get out of the drug use and have a long career if he had lived under such a murdering despot.

“Drain the swamp” was a refrain of Donald Trump during the presidential campaign, but Newt Gingrich says the president-elect “doesn’t want to use it anymore” now that he’s knee-deep in alligators.
“I’m told he now just disclaims that. He now says it was cute, but he doesn’t want to use it anymore,” Gingrich, who informally advises Trump, said Wednesday on NPR’s “Morning Edition.”
