Everyone knows “Die Hard” is one of the all-time great Christmas movies. This isn’t “Die Hard,” but a weird twisted spin-off, and I think you’ll have fun watching.

When he wakes up one morning, Bruce Willis finds himself pursued by an entire city… again !

Heard from my undercover lib-agents in Lubbock. The locals there are suffering a brown Christmas: 60 degrees, sunshine, wind from the west at 32 mph, blowing dust. I would suggest that the deity of their choice is trying to tell them something but that would be Trump and he does not have a clue how climate and weather work.

I don’t miss the place a bit.

Last night, Mrs. FBW got a call from one of her step-half-sisters. Her 90 year old Dad had tripped and fallen, and was in the hospital with an egg-sized lump on his noggin. A CAT scan found nothing untoward, but his EKG was apparently not normal, so he’s still in the hospital, under observation.

re: #42 BigPapa

The latest election demonstrated a rather large difference in the voting of Americans by the amount of formal education they have received.

There’s a lot of resentment built up by the non-college educated white working folk in the expanse of this country. I see it in my Facebook feed.

When looking at our past, which I’ve done a bit the last year as I work on some genealogy stuff, it is pretty clear that the rapid changes in this county, from an agricultural based, to industrial, to so-called post-industrial, has really upended some very long running social structures our society has used for centuries.

Mostly these involve religion to some degree, but also family structure and secular law.

When I see the Trumpians and their backwardness I wonder if they would have been so backward two centuries ago? Typical response to an authoritarian male figure is to fight or submit and our history is very much about such responses and the rise (and fall) of such leaders.

I’ve started to watch the AGU videos from 2 weeks ago, and it seems to me that the worldview of the scientist is now more than ever at odds with the popular social movements. We are not more “scientific” today. People get misled about this. No, what we are today is more enabled by fancy gadgets, “technology” as it is called.

Magical thinking is still the dominant human mode. (See again my Facebook feed.) In a group setting, this magical thinking takes form as political movements that rally around phrases that are nothing more than anointed magickal words.

“Make America Great Again” is some strange variant of neuro-linguistic programming, with all the baggage that entails, wherein the reality that is underlying America’s election of Trump is just the same old bigotry and ignorance.

The (still lingering but discredited) human potential movement was re-instantiated as the Trump Potential Movement, and worked just well enough to accomplish the goal.

That there are enough latent sociopaths in America in 2016 to intentionally subvert reasoned governance is a troubling thought, though I don’t discount it at all.

I’d rather believe, I think, that people are just bigoted and stupid.

re: #50 Charles Johnson

In regards to Trump laying waste to America, one of the featured speakers at AGU this year was NASA chief scientist Waleed Abdalati, and his talk “Earth from Space: The Power of Perspective” turned from technical to politics at the end. He’s in a tough spot, but to me seems to be trying to formulate a strategy of how much to fight and how much to accept, in regards to possible Trump attacks on NASA scientists.

The bottom line is that Congress controls the spending and during the Obama years the Congress pretty much went with Obama’s plan of restoring NASA’s Earth Science budget to where it was before the GWB administration let it lapse.

The bad thing about Trump, though, is that he’ll put any idiot into an administrative position as long as it brings Trump more power and glory, and I can see Trump replacing the NASA heads with the likes of Gingrich.

I disagree with Abdalati about what we’re about to face, though.

Abdalati seems to think it’s just going to be more of the same, as he has with say Sen. Inhofe (who while being very much against climate change science, has no problems wheeling and dealing with billions of dollars in budget deals.)

We’re in for much more chaos than that with Trump and his gang at the top of the Executive branch.

Getting back on my soapbox of how people today are just as much magical thinkers as those in the past…

Looking at the headlines on Google News, for a wide range of science topics… and I find that the headlines are worse than ever. Really misleading headlines, really misleading stories, etc.

It’s popular among progressive types to tout “education” but I think we need to be more honest in assessing what really goes on in society. Most people are not really interested in the body of knowledge that’s been gained the past few centuries.

People want to escape, usually through “entertainment”. That’s why cable TV companies that years ago started out with noble goals of being educational now run shows on Aliens and Nazis under the ocean, etc.

We’ll be bailing Felix Randomkitty out of kitty jail tomorrow. (He is in for our trip to California; the vet hospital is closed until tomorrow so we couldn’t get him back).

That assumes the roads can be cleared: We had thunder-sleet for two hours this afternoon, and now have blizzard conditions. I went outside to bring down my flag and it was frozen straight out solid.

Scout the cat lives in a place called Feline Bed and Breakfast when I’m traveling, and she seems to like it. If nothing else, it gives her an opportunity to observe other cats (they don’t let them socialize, obviously (Scout would probably be okay with it, though). They also let them out of their cubicles once a day — they call it play time.

One reason I think she likes it is that I came back once after a short trip (mine are usually pretty long), and she acted really annoyed at me for cutting her vacation short.

When we came back from Poland last year and Canada this year, Felix was really annoyed. It was because he had to be away from his castle (that, and he really doesn’t like sixty mile car trips). I suspect he will be just as annoyed with us tomorrow (What? You already did this to me this year! Just for that, I will shred your leg.)

Starting January 2018, TSA will no longer allow passengers aboard aircraft from nine states unless they use some other form of ID than a driver’s license (because those states’ licenses are not compliant with the Real ID Act). They will need some other sort of ID such as a military ID or passport.

The TSA will stop accepting licenses from Kentucky, Maine, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Minnesota, Missouri, and Washington.

IIRC the law requires each license to include a 2-D bar code containing a variety of personal info in addition to ensuring the ID cannot be easily counterfeited. Some states objected because it smacked of the dreaded “national ID” that Americans for bizarre reasons oppose.

I don’t fly much (I used to fix aeroplanes, so there’s that too): Too expensive and too much stress involved. It’s even more stressful on my wife, who is physically disabled and so her needs go largely ignored by airlines. (When we came back from Poland, she was left in a hallway in a wheelchair in Toronto’s airport; she and I were separated by the crowd and the fellow pushing her from the airline ditched her. It took me twenty minutes to find her again - thanks, Air Canada.)

Yeah, but then you have to go down to the DMV. I dunno what it’s like in other states, but in Arizona, it’s like the eighth circle of hell. Seriously, it’s easier to get a passport. I had to get a new picture for my driver’s license in 2014 (which doesn’t expire until I turn 65, it’s Arizona) and it was horrible, horrible. It also didn’t help that I had put it off until after my father died after weeks of dying and a week in a coma, so I was not in the mood to put up with bureaucratic nonsense, and the DMV is full of that. Getting the passport last month was, by comparison, much less of a hassle (although it did cost a lot more).

Feds deny Kentucky more time to comply with tougher driver’s license rules

Read more here: kentucky.com

FRANKFORT

The federal government has denied Kentucky’s request for a one-year extension to comply with regulations known as Real ID, requiring tougher standards for driver’s licenses and identification cards.

The immediate effects on Kentucky residents are minimal, but if the state does not comply by 2018 residents won’t be able to use their state-issued license to board planes for domestic flights.

Gov. Matt Bevin earlier this year vetoed legislation that would have put Kentucky into compliance.

The new driver’s license would have been optional under the vetoed legislation, which would have raised the drivers’ license fee to $48 from $20 and made licenses good for eight years instead of four years. It also would have required residents to bring their birth certificates and Social Security cards when renewing their license.

Bevin said it became clear in this year’s legislative session that there was tremendous opposition and misunderstanding about the bill that he had initially supported.

The Republican governor said it is important that “Kentucky’s voters have the ability to see what effect, if any, the next presidential administration will have on this issue.”

The proposal is expected to be taken up again in Kentucky’s 2017 General Assembly, which begins in January.

U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth, D-Louisville, criticized Bevin for his veto this year.

“While I question whether Real ID provides an improved level of security that justifies the costs, Kentucky simply can’t ignore the law,” Yarmuth said Wednesday. “It’s unfortunate that Gov. Bevin vetoed the bicameral, bipartisan agreement that would have prevented further headaches for Kentucky travelers and residents.”

Gov. Bevin is a jackass just because he can.

In my county, getting a driver’s license is only permitted on Mondays for a couple hours. (It is not due to voter suppression laws, it is due to a county with only five thousand people.) They cannot make a license at the county office: They send your information to Lincoln, and the state DMV mails you a license back. I could go to a larger city in another county (such as Scottsbluff) and get one issued right away though.

Getting passports was much tougher; the county only looks at such paperwork a couple times a month - the county clerk does not process it; the county judge’s clerk does (not sure why that is). It took weeks to get an appointment to fill in the application and several more weeks to get the passports back. (Our birth certificates did not come back until two months after we went to Europe.)

My wife was left standing in a security gate in Frankfort entering a flight to Stuttgart. The scanner went off for some reason, and the German police pretty much sealed off the area. They left my wife standing (without a cane) while they ran hand scanners over her, which triggered on her foot.

Off came the shoe; nothing in the shoe or her foot. Left her standing around more, in one shoe, while I complained to get her a chair (they had me sequestered to the side). They finally got a supervisor of some sort in that let her and me go.
