Donald Trump confirmed yesterday that his veterans’ health “plan” is a joke
Mr. Trump met with several executives of private hospital systems at his Mar-a-Lago estate on Wednesday. After the meeting, Mr. Trump called out to reporters, saying he wanted to describe his ideas for changes to the Department of Veterans Affairs, but then quickly directed one of his senior aides to describe the proposals under consideration.
The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, provided no details about how the plans would work, how much they would cost, or the possibility of unintended consequences from privatizing part of the V.A.’s sprawling medical system.

M.D. Harmon, a conservative columnist who frequently wrote in favor of gun ownership rights for the Portland Press Herald, died this week after being accidentally shot by a teenage boy.
As the Press Herald itself reports, the 71-year-old Harmon was showing off one of his guns to a 16-year-old boy in his home in Sanford, Maine, on Wednesday. Harmon apparently let the teenager handle the weapon, which went off while the boy was holding it.
Both the teenager and his father were visiting Harmon for undisclosed reasons, and Harmon’s wife has called the shooting an “accidental tragedy.”
Harmon was a dedicated defender of gun ownership rights and would regularly rail against attempts to regulate firearms or even make the use of firearms safer.

This whole act by the Trump team attempting to minimize, or outright suggest that the US intelligence and law enforcement communities stop investigating Russia’s interference into US elections is REALLY starting to look like someone who isn’t wanting something incriminating to be discovered. For example, members of the Trump campaign being in the loop. Or worse, Trump actually bankrolling and coordinating the Russian attackers. The FBI and CIA (and whoever else is looking into this currently) need to leverage all of their available resources, and use them fast, because come January 20 I get the distinct feeling that Trump will do everything in his power to shut the investigation down completely once he’s in office.

Ever since I was old enough to be aware of political mechanisation, it was apparent to me that conservatives were working to undermine the country (that would be back as far as President Nixon).
Everything from demonising their opposition as anti-American to attacking such things as the social safety net and taxation of the wealthy to pay for more military equipment.
I am not enough a student of history to understand all the reasons the Soviet Union came apart, but part of the reason seems to be that they went bankrupt trying to keep up with Ronald Reagan’s military buildup before Ronald Reagan was able to bankrupt us.
Everything from attacks on women’s reproductive rights to free speech zones are designed to curtail liberty, not expand it. I have never in my life seen a conservative seek to expand liberty, not one.
Historically, conservatives opposed setting aside Jim Crow laws (they still do). They opposed setting aside anti-miscegenation laws. They opposed marriage equality. They oppose, oppose, oppose. (On these listed in this paragraph, they justified it with the Bible.)
And if opposing liberals today means throwing in with a foreign power that opposes democratic institutions, then they will do that. People in the Republican Party like Senator Lindsay Graham who are appalled at the revelations will be swept aside as RINOS.
Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) on MSNBC: No evidence of Russian hacking, but if they did succeed in giving the American people information, they did what the media should have done.

Trent Franks is on the House Armed Services Committee, and was saying that Russia was just doing what the the media should have done.
The allegations of hacking by our intelligence services go beyond the DNC: The allegations include hacking of several states’s voter information, including Arizona’s, which Rep. Franks represents.
The Constitution makes a very narrow definition of treason because that charge used to be used all the time in the United Kingdom against the opposition political party. However, “aid and comfort” includes being a propaganda mouthpiece for a foreign power.
I am not a lawyer, but an awful lot of what has come forth from GOP politicians seems to rise to that level. Good luck finding someone to prosecute it in the new minority President’s administration though.

It would be extremely unpleasant for Sir Halford Mackinder, a bespectacled and slightly aloof Edwardian academic, to witness the use to which his life’s work has been put in post-communist Russia.
Best-known for a lecture entitled “The Geographical Pivot of History,” which he delivered to the Royal Geographical Society in 1904, Mackinder argued that Russia, not Germany, was Britain’s main strategic opponent. This he illustrated with a colorful theory that came to be known as “geopolitics.” The timing of his prediction, prior to two world wars against Germany, subsequently did not do his theory any favors. However, Mackinder was finally vindicated in the last year of his life by the start of the Cold War, the epitome of his teachings. I’ll disagree with the Reagan build up as the main reason for the Soviet Union coming apart. It was, in my opinion, trying to keep up with the West from the beginning.
The Soviet Union never did have the manufacturing capability to keep up. I understand that close to a third of Soviet GDP went to national security. Since national security is, in the words of John Ralston Saul, “A political necessity but an economic negative”, the Soviet Union couldn’t help but implode.
Although, again in my opinion, the US may follow because I think it’s spending far more than it needs on national security.

Putin’s backed off retaliatory expulsions of US diplomats from Russia, even as Russia has continued harassing US diplomats in Russia.
The US kicked out a bunch of Russian agents and Trump’s spokeshack thinks that this is simply impossible. She thinks the Russians don’t have military or intel assets here in the US. That’s stunning level of incompetence or flat out ignorance, or a new low in agitprop that inures benefit to Russia.
Of course Russia has agents here in the US. The US has agents in Russia. That’s how the intel game is played. Humint is one aspect of intel gathering to find out what is going on in the other nation, and Russia elevated that to include psyops to undermine Clinton’s chances in the just concluded election.
It’s as though these right wing nutters ignore that Russia engaged in these kinds of operations in the past. Anyone forget Anna Chapman and the Russian spy ring busted in 2010? Russia has been doing psyops and intel ops for decades (including when it was the USSR). They’re pretty good at it.
That Conway and Trump think that this isn’t real, or think it isn’t a threat shows just how much in the bag they are for Russia. The GOP that isn’t speaking out against this - and that’s nearly all of them - can no longer claim to be patriots, not when their standard bearer and PEOTUS is actively pushing the Russia lie (and line). The #PutinPickedPumpkin doesn’t have US best interests in mind, and his statements show that he doesn’t care. He’s more interested in fleecing the American people, and the GOP leadership is interested only in how they can exploit Trump and their current position of power to ram through their regressive and extreme agenda that again harms most Americans (especially those least able to handle the additional burdens).

The internal wingnut logic goes something like this: they used to send the little slut to jail for selling her whore body on the streets, now they don’t, err goes, child prostitution is now legal in California
The California penal code states that the age of consent is 18 (though there are some civil appellate cases that say someone under the age of 18 may give consent, it - like most things involving teenage sexuality (for lack of a better word) - is complicated). Combined with California contract law regarding minors entering into contracts, it actually makes sense to say a minor shouldn’t be liable in these situations. My guess is that this is meant to protect minors who are forced into prostitution but will likely also serve to protect those who choose to do so.

Reminds me of the former United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia (John Brownlee (R)) who spoke out against a proposed drug treatment center in Roanoke County (middle to upper class white) but didn’t have a thing to say when one was proposed in an African-American community in the City of Roanoke.

I’m rereading the law, and it looks like solicitation is a misdemeanor (even if a minor is involved). It’s 45 days in county jail for a first offense (and no leeway for the court to give a lighter sentence or probation without serving 45 days). If a minor is involved, they add a minimum of 2 days and a maximum of 1 year to the sentence, and/or a fine up to $10,000.

That’s what MAKES IT an entitlement. Social Security and Medicare are paid for by the recipients all their working lives, so they’re ENTITLED to it. Same for Veteran’s benefit.

Actually, SS is the perfect example of an entitlement. It is something you have a right to-in the case of SS because you paid into it. I dragged my fat ass out yesterday for the last ride of the year. ~20 miles. It wasn’t one of those rides where you feel like a god and you could go on forever, or one of those where you look at your Strava feed afterwards and see lots of personal bests. It was one of those where you feel every year of your age.
BUT I kept going! That’s what counts, right?
I saw a group of 5 deer, one at least a 4x4 buck (8-point, for those of you in the East). But that wasn’t all! A couple miles later, zooming downhill at about 30 mph, I noticed a shape next to the road. As I flashed by, I realized it was a coyote, about 8 feet from me! He looked bored.
Even on the worst rides, there’s usually something like that.

Took my Chevrolet in to get the rest of the warranty job done (that they started a month ago - parts, apparently, were on some kind of record backorder). While there, they also helpfully re-enabled the DRL’s on the little girl, which had been bugging me slightly. The man who albeit indirectly shaped my basic political philosophy the most was born in 1913. I have more in common with his view of the world than a CCJ who is around my age. It just gets old. I see people bemoan this. Harry Reid was pro-life for much of his political career including as Majority Leader. When is the last time the GOP had a pro-choice leader or better yet how about how being opposed to abortion in all cases has become a mainstream GOP position? I think Democrats are fine with people personally opposed to abortion as long as they concede that the Roe is A) the law of the land and B) legalized abortion no matter how you may personally feel about it is preferably to it being illegal. As for opposition to LGBT rights, I don’t see any person opposed to those as having a place in the Democratic Party of 2016 and beyond. And once again, how prominent are pro-LGBT supporters in the GOP? Sure, guys like Portman and Cheney dod support same sex marriage but it’s obvious that they only adopted those positions due to their son and daughter respectively, if Portman or Cheney didn’t have a LGBT son or daughter, they’d still be as staunchly opposed as the average Republican is to LGBT rights.
I happen to think pretty highly of the millenniel generation. Among other things, they are noticeably more polite and courteous than their parents were (and are). There are exceptions, of course, especially among the children of backward “conservative” families, but on the average I think this will hold true.
The Democrats get a lot of shit for being “too socially left wing” by the types who want us to talk more economics but they ignore that the GOP are the ones that have started the cultural wars in the first place. It was Republican legislatures that began waging war on choice after they regained their legislatures in 2010. It was the Bush administration that pushed for a nationwide ban on same sex marriage. It’s North Carolina Republicans that used the transgendered as a scapegoat. So, yes we’re pro LGBT, we’re pro choice, and you know what, I’m proud of that, it means we’re defending people who are attacked by Republican policies. I’d be fine with us taking a more left wing approach on economics but I’m not naive enough to think that will bring people who hate our party for being socially liberal back into or into it at all.
