Donald Trump confirmed yesterday that his veterans’ health “plan” is a joke

Mr. Trump met with several executives of private hospital systems at his Mar-a-Lago estate on Wednesday. After the meeting, Mr. Trump called out to reporters, saying he wanted to describe his ideas for changes to the Department of Veterans Affairs, but then quickly directed one of his senior aides to describe the proposals under consideration.

The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, provided no details about how the plans would work, how much they would cost, or the possibility of unintended consequences from privatizing part of the V.A.’s sprawling medical system.

Gaaaaa.

And I am “anti-American” for being a liberal.

I’ve heard it said that conservatives cannot win with their ideas, so they have to cheat to win (lie about the opposition, gerrymander House districts, voter suppression laws, &c).

Has that now extended to “collude with a foreign power to subvert elections?”

Gun loving conservative columnist accidentally killed after letting a teenager hold his firearm.

rawstory.com

M.D. Harmon, a conservative columnist who frequently wrote in favor of gun ownership rights for the Portland Press Herald, died this week after being accidentally shot by a teenage boy.

As the Press Herald itself reports, the 71-year-old Harmon was showing off one of his guns to a 16-year-old boy in his home in Sanford, Maine, on Wednesday. Harmon apparently let the teenager handle the weapon, which went off while the boy was holding it.

Both the teenager and his father were visiting Harmon for undisclosed reasons, and Harmon’s wife has called the shooting an “accidental tragedy.”

Harmon was a dedicated defender of gun ownership rights and would regularly rail against attempts to regulate firearms or even make the use of firearms safer.

There was nothing accidental about it. Dude knew the bullet was in the chamber, bullet went down the barrel exactly as it was designed to do, and hit a target, exactly as it is intended to do, and he knowingly and willingly handed the gun to someone who was not trained to use it.

Yup. There are no accidental discharges of firearms, only misuse or mishandling of firearms. Consider me corrected here (though to be fair, I lifted the title of the article).

This whole act by the Trump team attempting to minimize, or outright suggest that the US intelligence and law enforcement communities stop investigating Russia’s interference into US elections is REALLY starting to look like someone who isn’t wanting something incriminating to be discovered. For example, members of the Trump campaign being in the loop. Or worse, Trump actually bankrolling and coordinating the Russian attackers. The FBI and CIA (and whoever else is looking into this currently) need to leverage all of their available resources, and use them fast, because come January 20 I get the distinct feeling that Trump will do everything in his power to shut the investigation down completely once he’s in office.

It’s Okay if You’re a Republican.

Ever since I was old enough to be aware of political mechanisation, it was apparent to me that conservatives were working to undermine the country (that would be back as far as President Nixon).

Everything from demonising their opposition as anti-American to attacking such things as the social safety net and taxation of the wealthy to pay for more military equipment.

I am not enough a student of history to understand all the reasons the Soviet Union came apart, but part of the reason seems to be that they went bankrupt trying to keep up with Ronald Reagan’s military buildup before Ronald Reagan was able to bankrupt us.

Everything from attacks on women’s reproductive rights to free speech zones are designed to curtail liberty, not expand it. I have never in my life seen a conservative seek to expand liberty, not one.

Historically, conservatives opposed setting aside Jim Crow laws (they still do). They opposed setting aside anti-miscegenation laws. They opposed marriage equality. They oppose, oppose, oppose. (On these listed in this paragraph, they justified it with the Bible.)

And if opposing liberals today means throwing in with a foreign power that opposes democratic institutions, then they will do that. People in the Republican Party like Senator Lindsay Graham who are appalled at the revelations will be swept aside as RINOS.

I notice that many Western nations flinch away from formal charges of treason (mostly because crimes that satisfy the definition are exceedingly rare) and I’ve seen that alot of people shy away from even using the word.
I won’t call it a weakness of democracies, because elements can and do misappropriate the term in its strictest sense… the very application of anti-treason laws does tend to undermine the more liberal aspirations of a nation.
But if Trump’s actions seriously don’t trend towards the integral compromisation of the nation’s security in the face of a hostile country’s covert attempts to influence an election, then the only factor mitigating his culpability would be his personal incompetence.
But considering the people he has surrounded himself with, and his unwillingness to even remain informed of developments pretty much seals it for me.

Trent Franks is on the House Armed Services Committee, and was saying that Russia was just doing what the the media should have done.

The allegations of hacking by our intelligence services go beyond the DNC: The allegations include hacking of several states’s voter information, including Arizona’s, which Rep. Franks represents.

The Constitution makes a very narrow definition of treason because that charge used to be used all the time in the United Kingdom against the opposition political party. However, “aid and comfort” includes being a propaganda mouthpiece for a foreign power.

I am not a lawyer, but an awful lot of what has come forth from GOP politicians seems to rise to that level. Good luck finding someone to prosecute it in the new minority President’s administration though.

The Unlikely Origins of Russia’s Manifest Destiny

How an obscure academic and a marginalized philosopher captured the minds of the Kremlin and helped forge the new Russian nationalism.

The article at Foreign Policy talks about how the Russian Empire/Soviet Union/Russian Federation seems to view the world, through the eyes of an English academic from the turn of the XX Century:

It would be extremely unpleasant for Sir Halford Mackinder, a bespectacled and slightly aloof Edwardian academic, to witness the use to which his life’s work has been put in post-communist Russia.

Best-known for a lecture entitled “The Geographical Pivot of History,” which he delivered to the Royal Geographical Society in 1904, Mackinder argued that Russia, not Germany, was Britain’s main strategic opponent. This he illustrated with a colorful theory that came to be known as “geopolitics.” The timing of his prediction, prior to two world wars against Germany, subsequently did not do his theory any favors. However, Mackinder was finally vindicated in the last year of his life by the start of the Cold War, the epitome of his teachings. He saw the world arrayed in pretty much the shape he had foreseen in 1904: Britain and America, whose navies ruled the world’s oceans, against the Soviet Union, the world’s predominant land power, whose vast steppe and harsh winters had defeated Napoleon and Hitler — all but impregnable behind a land fortress, the “Heartland” of Eurasia.

The article continues at FP.

I’ll disagree with the Reagan build up as the main reason for the Soviet Union coming apart. It was, in my opinion, trying to keep up with the West from the beginning.

The Soviet Union never did have the manufacturing capability to keep up. I understand that close to a third of Soviet GDP went to national security. Since national security is, in the words of John Ralston Saul, “A political necessity but an economic negative”, the Soviet Union couldn’t help but implode.

Although, again in my opinion, the US may follow because I think it’s spending far more than it needs on national security.

Gorbachev also realized that without computers, they could not keep up. But with PC’s everywhere, there was no way they could continue to have a monopoly on the spread of information.

They were also very bad a getting things from prototype to production stage, as the entire concept of entrepreneurship was not part of their system.

The music is quite stirring.

The lyrics (in English, probably ought to learn them before January 20):

A union that’s unbreakable, of free republics,
Great Russia has welded forever to stand!
Long live the creation of the will of the people,
The united, mighty Soviet Union!

CHORUS:
Glory to the fatherland, land of the free
A reliable stronghold of peoples’ friendship!
Party of Lenin, strength of the people,
Leads us to the triumph of Communism!

Through tempests the sun of freedom shone to us,
And the great Lenin illuminated our path,
To a just cause he raised up the peoples,
To labour and heroic deeds he inspired us!

CHORUS

In the victory of the immortal ideas of Communism
We see the future of our country,
And to the Red Banner of our glorious Fatherland
We shall always be selflessly true!

CHORUS

Natasha was something right out of a spy novel: She had a chemistry degree from the Mendeleyev Institute, the Soviet equivalent of MIT or Berkeley, she was intellectual, could quote at length from poets like Tsvetaeva, Mandel’shtam, Akhmatova or Yesenin, a chain-smoking, alcoholic nymphomaniac, also spoke fluent English and worked as an interpreter for the 1980 Olympics.
She told me that because of that she came into contact with the security services, who tried to recruit her as a “special agent”, decked her out in diamonds and a snort black dress (which she had to sign for) and sent her to an Intourist hotel, where she was instructed to collect information from a group of suspected international drug smugglers “using all means at her disposal”.
But she said she was young (barely nineteen) and innocent and could not bring herself to go through with it (despite being incredibly hot and ready to go, she was somehow terribly prude about it).
All I can say is that they Cold War might have ended differently if she had gone to work for them:
“Here, take the blueprints, copy the diskettes…whatever you want…JUST LET ME REST FOR HALF AN HOUR BEFORE WE GO AT IT AGAIN!”

Greets and saluts from the NYC Metro Area. Looks like the #PutinPickedPumpkin wants to make Russia great again, and is still pushing Russia’s line about hacking/psyops in election to help Trump defeat Clinton.

Putin’s backed off retaliatory expulsions of US diplomats from Russia, even as Russia has continued harassing US diplomats in Russia.

The US kicked out a bunch of Russian agents and Trump’s spokeshack thinks that this is simply impossible. She thinks the Russians don’t have military or intel assets here in the US. That’s stunning level of incompetence or flat out ignorance, or a new low in agitprop that inures benefit to Russia.

Of course Russia has agents here in the US. The US has agents in Russia. That’s how the intel game is played. Humint is one aspect of intel gathering to find out what is going on in the other nation, and Russia elevated that to include psyops to undermine Clinton’s chances in the just concluded election.

It’s as though these right wing nutters ignore that Russia engaged in these kinds of operations in the past. Anyone forget Anna Chapman and the Russian spy ring busted in 2010? Russia has been doing psyops and intel ops for decades (including when it was the USSR). They’re pretty good at it.

That Conway and Trump think that this isn’t real, or think it isn’t a threat shows just how much in the bag they are for Russia. The GOP that isn’t speaking out against this - and that’s nearly all of them - can no longer claim to be patriots, not when their standard bearer and PEOTUS is actively pushing the Russia lie (and line). The #PutinPickedPumpkin doesn’t have US best interests in mind, and his statements show that he doesn’t care. He’s more interested in fleecing the American people, and the GOP leadership is interested only in how they can exploit Trump and their current position of power to ram through their regressive and extreme agenda that again harms most Americans (especially those least able to handle the additional burdens).

Take what’s going on with the Trump camp right now and leave all of it as it is, but substitute Hillary Clinton for Donald Trump.

Let’s say Hillary wins the EC but loses the popular vote by 2 million+.

The entire intelligence apparatus says there is conclusive evidence Russian intel with direct involvement of Vladimir Putin hacked the RNC and deliberately tried to influence the election in her favor against Trump.

She refuses to hold press conferences and does not attend daily intel briefings.

She stacks her cabinet full of people with direct ties to Putin and Russian oligarchy.

And let’s remember that during the campaign, she could be relied upon to take every self-contradicting, mutually-exclusive position on every issue she ever spoke about, with the sole exception being her attitudes towards Russia in general and Putin specifically, whom she has never criticized even mildly and has always defended.

When the current president enacts sanctions against Russia in response to the election meddling, she says, “ho-hum, time to move on”. She has her official campaign propagandists saying all the exact same shit Trump’s are saying.

If Hillary had done all that, there would be nothing coming from Republicans but a non-stop torrent of howls for investigation upon investigation at bare minimum. It would be a national emergency on the scale of Pearl Harbor as far as they were concerned. Hell, even the mainstream media might notice a little. Maybe.

Where did the Examiner come up with this tripe? My understanding is that California seeks other solutions than jail for child prostitution (which sometimes is not the child’s idea). How does that morph into “legalising child prostitution?”

Are they trying to spin up wingnuts again, like the pizzeria in DC?

Under the previous version of the law, both parties (the prostitute and the john) were criminally liable. Under this version, if the prostitute is a minor, they are not criminally liable, but may be adjudged a dependent of the court and taken into protective custody.

The internal wingnut logic goes something like this: they used to send the little slut to jail for selling her whore body on the streets, now they don’t, err goes, child prostitution is now legal in California

The California penal code states that the age of consent is 18 (though there are some civil appellate cases that say someone under the age of 18 may give consent, it - like most things involving teenage sexuality (for lack of a better word) - is complicated). Combined with California contract law regarding minors entering into contracts, it actually makes sense to say a minor shouldn’t be liable in these situations. My guess is that this is meant to protect minors who are forced into prostitution but will likely also serve to protect those who choose to do so.

Technically, this change could open the door for johns being liable for statutory rape as well (assuming the sex act was performed).

But I don’t practice criminal law, so I don’t know if that would actually be the case.

It’s a complicated area of law and policy, and overlaps with many other areas that can also get complicated or at least convoluted. Personally, I tend to lean towards legalization/regulation of prostitution but that’s mostly because of my libertarian sensibilities and general rejection of puritanism/fundamentalism.

Hope is essential to battling addiction, and so is money, and that’s an urgent issue in Ross County. Congress recently approved, and President Obama signed, health legislation that includes funding to fight the opioid epidemic. But Ross County voters last month rejected for the first time in three decades a property tax levy that funds a variety of health services, including a weekly clinic for addicts and a program to distribute naloxone to people with family members at risk of overdosing.

The one in the County never was approved, but the one in the City was. A couple years later the local paper ran a story about the crime concerns about the one in the City and the only complaint the police had were an overprotective alarm system that they had gotten several calls from before the center and alarm company fixed the problem.

Can’t speak for California, but in Virginia prostitution where an adult is solicited is only a misdemeanor; if a minor is involved it’s a felony that will land someone on the sex offender registry.

(Used to work in the criminal justice field before anyone asks.)

I’m rereading the law, and it looks like solicitation is a misdemeanor (even if a minor is involved). It’s 45 days in county jail for a first offense (and no leeway for the court to give a lighter sentence or probation without serving 45 days). If a minor is involved, they add a minimum of 2 days and a maximum of 1 year to the sentence, and/or a fine up to $10,000.

I dragged my fat ass out yesterday for the last ride of the year. ~20 miles. It wasn’t one of those rides where you feel like a god and you could go on forever, or one of those where you look at your Strava feed afterwards and see lots of personal bests. It was one of those where you feel every year of your age.

BUT I kept going! That’s what counts, right?

I saw a group of 5 deer, one at least a 4x4 buck (8-point, for those of you in the East). But that wasn’t all! A couple miles later, zooming downhill at about 30 mph, I noticed a shape next to the road. As I flashed by, I realized it was a coyote, about 8 feet from me! He looked bored.

Even on the worst rides, there’s usually something like that.

Birth Control Works  Dec 30, 2016 • 10:09:56am

Perhaps the most monstrous thing about the American medical system — and the bar for that title is high indeed — is predatory billing.

A great many medical providers adjust their prices based on how defenseless the patient is, and bleed the weakest ones for every last red cent, often with preposterously inflated charges for things like aspirin and bandages. A 2015 study looked at the worst price gougers in the country and found 50 hospitals that charged uninsured people roughly 10 times the actual cost of care.

Key to this practice is something called “balance billing,” and it’s why the American Medical Association is strongly supporting Donald Trump’s pick of Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees Medicare. Balance billing is forbidden for Medicare enrollees, but Price wants to allow it — thus allowing doctors and hospitals to devour the nest eggs of thousands of American seniors.

So what is balance billing? It’s the practice of billing the patient for the difference between the sticker price and what insurance will pay. So if a hospital visit costs $1,000, but your insurance will only cover $300, some providers will “balance bill” you for $700.

Stalin rather liked Packards and had several of them. He also had a thing for Pontiacs and sometimes gave them as gifts to favored comrades. When aircraft designer Alexander Yakovlev was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1940, the package included a nice dacha, a pile of gold rubles, and a Pontiac Silver Chief. Yalovlev put the car to good use the following year when he fled Moscow for the Urals during the Getman advance.

Well, and a lot of the generational bashing is due to people picking out the worst qualities of the next (or previous) generation, stereotyping everyone thereby, and hurling insults. It’s ridiculous and stupid and why can’t we just treat people as individuals and take their contributions on their own standalone merits?

Well, and a lot of the generational bashing is due to people picking out the worst qualities of the next (or previous) generation, stereotyping everyone thereby, and hurling insults. It’s ridiculous and stupid and why can’t we just treat people as individuals and take their contributions on their own standalone merits?

Indeed, that’s how I feel about race, religion, sexuality, etc too. Individuals are individuals. My Dad is in Trump’s generation and like Trump a grandchild of a German immigrant but the two couldn’t possibly be more different.

Sorry guys, the millenial bashing is something I really take personally because I think the younger generation has a lot of positives to offer society as a whole that a bunch of bitter fucks whine about because they don’t like the general tolerance to people of differing cultural groups that millenials have by and large.

I have to hear people 50+ who, without any irony, complain constantly that millennials are a bunch of whiners.

One of these days, I am going to ask, “have you heard yourself talk recently? And you complain about millennials whining?”

Old farts need to give-it-up. It’s not our world anymore. It belongs to those younger than we are.

Shit I can’t even drive hubby’s computerized car.

Well it’s all our world not just my generation’s. Fact is individuals are individuals and I’d like to go one day without seeing some old fart whine about millenials and how political correctness “ruined” everything and how everything was just peachy in his childhood or early adulthood. May well be that he had a great upbringing but chances are good that while he was doing that, a lot of the bad elements of the past that are either gone or in decline were much more present and that’s not his fault but it’s something he should understand.

Right or how “entitled” they are. Funny because the older generation said that about them back in the day. I think that’s part of why my Dad and I can get on so well. My Dad to his credit likes to listen to people’s perspectives. May not always agree but I’ve never seen him outright dismiss someone because they were a different age or cultural background than him.

I also have to laugh at those who insist political correctness ruined everything. Uh guys when TV was first invented, it couldn’t even be implied that Lucy and Ricky shared the same bed. Psycho showing a flushing toilet was groundbreaking. Lots of shows and comic acts well in to the 70’s were called obscene. Oh, if you’re bitter that you can’t say racial slurs and not have blowback, tough fucking shit. All the people who bitch about modern PC really are oblivious to how much censorship was a big part of the past.

Wonkette tears apart one of the “great thinkers” we’re going to have to listen to until at least 2020

“The Democratic Party used to welcome people who didn’t support abortion into the party. We are now so far from that, it’s insane.”

You know, I’m not that involved with the local Democratic committee, but when I was volunteering for Clinton’s campaign, I don’t recall even once being asked what my position on abortion is (which is probably more conservative than most of the people working on that campaign) despite identifying myself as a “recovering Republican”.

My favorite part of the Wonkette post is right after that quoted section because she points out that her own mom is pro-life despite being a longtime Democratic Party grassroots activist.

I see people bemoan this. Harry Reid was pro-life for much of his political career including as Majority Leader. When is the last time the GOP had a pro-choice leader or better yet how about how being opposed to abortion in all cases has become a mainstream GOP position? I think Democrats are fine with people personally opposed to abortion as long as they concede that the Roe is A) the law of the land and B) legalized abortion no matter how you may personally feel about it is preferably to it being illegal. As for opposition to LGBT rights, I don’t see any person opposed to those as having a place in the Democratic Party of 2016 and beyond. And once again, how prominent are pro-LGBT supporters in the GOP? Sure, guys like Portman and Cheney dod support same sex marriage but it’s obvious that they only adopted those positions due to their son and daughter respectively, if Portman or Cheney didn’t have a LGBT son or daughter, they’d still be as staunchly opposed as the average Republican is to LGBT rights.

I happen to think pretty highly of the millenniel generation. Among other things, they are noticeably more polite and courteous than their parents were (and are). There are exceptions, of course, especially among the children of backward “conservative” families, but on the average I think this will hold true.

The Democrats get a lot of shit for being “too socially left wing” by the types who want us to talk more economics but they ignore that the GOP are the ones that have started the cultural wars in the first place. It was Republican legislatures that began waging war on choice after they regained their legislatures in 2010. It was the Bush administration that pushed for a nationwide ban on same sex marriage. It’s North Carolina Republicans that used the transgendered as a scapegoat. So, yes we’re pro LGBT, we’re pro choice, and you know what, I’m proud of that, it means we’re defending people who are attacked by Republican policies. I’d be fine with us taking a more left wing approach on economics but I’m not naive enough to think that will bring people who hate our party for being socially liberal back into or into it at all.

I was born in the last year designated as “Baby Boomer”, widowed at 50, lost my job in September, and I live in so-called “nice” Iowa. For some odd reason employers aren’t knocking down my door to hire a 56 year old broad without a college degree…go figure. I get EBT (food stamps) right now, and I can tell you that every generation gives me the stink eye when I take out my card at the local store. Young, old, and in-between, the cashier checks out my cart and will snort at something in my cart. Ketchup? I don’t deserve flavor. Wheat bread? Don’t I know white is cheaper? Generic ice tea? What’s wrong with tap water? Hamburger? Hot dogs are a buck. Buns for the hot dogs? See again white bread. If I have anything in my cart that’s not ramen packets…well, they still think I’m getting too many. Who do I think I am eating more than one ramen pack per day? Age is no factor to smug, moral superiority, believe me.

And I heard many of the Boomer generation make the same types of claims about Boomers bringing a lot of positives through peace, love and understanding…by being less materialistic and loving all people and things.

I’m a Boomer…it was a lot of bullshit. Sure some did good, but all generations have good and bad people.

Best bet…don’t worry about generations and just do all the best you can. Like mentioned above, it’s been going on since the dawning of man. And if you start classifying generations all you are doing is falling into the same thinking.

And you too will find out a lot of the people of your generation were going to do one thing and then did something else.

I call it all part of the human condition…and it is there for everyone and not going to change. (Shrug)

I used to argue respectfully with oldtards. Like the one who pushed a broom at Ford and retired in his early fifties. He used all that valuable free time to develop his hatred of all things liberal. Until he had to be reminded that his stupid ass is worth less than a fucking burger flipper, but he had his union that took care of him that of course he now hates. I don’t talk nice to these fucks any more. I go straight for the hypocrisy now and then when the whining elevates I tell them to shut the fuck up. Usually I end with “those government checks you cash, they come on time right?”

From a friend on Facebook - too good not to share:

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him:

“Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.”

The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, “You’re in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.

She rolled her eyes and said, “You must be an Obama Democrat.

“I am,” replied the man. “How did you know?”

“Well,” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is technically correct. But I have no idea what to do with your information, and I’m still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help to me.”

The man smiled and responded, “You must be a Republican.”

“I am,” replied the balloonist. “How did you know?”

“Well,” said the man, “you don’t know where you are — or where you are going. You’ve risen to where you are , due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You’re in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it’s my fault.”

Don’t call anyone who voted for Trump a “Trump voter”. They take that as an insult.

2016 continues its wrath. My husband passed away at noon today. Thank you all for your support yesterday, as that story came to an end.

Oh, God. I’m did sorry to hear that. I haven’t been posting as much lately, and no idea he was ill.

Please accept my condolences and let me kmow if you need anything.

Would they accept “dumbass”?

Notice the Orange Dullard only poses with black people who are dumb as a post, convicted felons, or reality show contestants…

re: #273 calochortus

If it helps, I don’t look down on anyone who needs assistance.
I have been known to roll my eyes at the occasional Young Person trying to buy beer with their food stamps, but I forgive the young a little folly. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to be in a position where they need the help. Honestly, if you qualify for EBT and can save enough for a splurge now and then, I salute you.

I’m also amazed (nauseated) that people can’t mind their own damn business when they’re in line at the grocery store. (Not you—youth buying beer is kinda funny.) I have enough trouble putting my groceries on the belt, getting my canvas bags ready, finding my discount card for scanning, getting out my credit card etc. I don’t have time (or the inclination) to pay any attention to somebody else’s groceries, let alone what card they’re swiping.
