Oh, she’s singing “live, live, live” I read it as “live, live, live”…

Nice tune. Love the little temp changes that pop up.

And Lucy has a great voice, so much better a singer than some of the pop stars of today. You know who they are.

Good stuff as usual from Charles, keeping his ear in tune to the tunes.

Isn’t it weird that a photo of Trump with Don King holding a Russian flag is not being discussed?

Here’s to hoping nobody else dies today.

Arrested is probably the only one of those I won’t reach tonight, though I’m also terrible at losing my phone when I’m drunk (as in, I’ve never managed to lose it well enough, resulting in some awkward drunk texts to Mrs. Fish when I finally come to).

I’m closing out 2016 with the last long run of my training, a fourteen mile one. The longest I’ve ever run.

I watched as I hit my first half marathon distance run ever, in 2:43:39. As Lizards may know, my goal for my official half time is under 2:45:00.

I feel both exhilarated and exhausted at the moment, because 14 miles is a lot. (Under 3 hours for it.)

Their song history is phenomenal. The opening riff of All Day and All of the Night was a moment that changed my world. The British Invasion, taking American music and showing us how to do it. We mourn all the talent that passed this year, but we were witness and privileged to hear and enjoy them. That’s why I try to take in every live act I can. I saw most of the biggest and best, but I regret not seeing some.

What pisses me off is those types love to claim there’s no difference between the two parties and they’re the loudest when the one party in fact shows how they’re different. Of course, Bernie himself still doesn’t get it, he was spouting off nonsense that you can’t claim to represent working people and then take money from Wall Street. I don’t really care much about knighthood and all that but good for Ray. I always have thought the Kinks were underrated.

My college boyfriend had every album they made, plus every bootleg found. We saw them three times, once on boyfriend’s birthday in Santa Barbara, CA, where Ray dedicated a song to him (I had written three letters) and everybody at the back door when they left thought it was Dave Davies’ birthday, because the first name is the same. When Dave came out, he shook David’s hand and said, ‘Oh, it’s you. Good luck to you then.’

In the early seventies I swore to never listen to another version of Hey Joe, but that’s feckin’ fantastic, thanks! And those Byrds-esque haircuts!

A lot of people think the Leaves version was the best one of the many people that did the song.

Was actually just talking about the Kinks with my Dad recently. He was listening to Van Morrison and I remarked that Van really doesn’t sound Irish and he made the point that most groups really don’t “sound” like their background but he did say the Kinks sounded very English. I always liked Sunny Afternoon by them but they have a lot of great songs and I think you can hear their influence on a lot of modern groups.

Go and listen to Teddy Bear Picnic. Get it in your head. Then think of Flo and Eddie with a band much like The Turtles, singing these lyrics. It was a big production number with costumes and insanity and quite a hoot. Might have been the last number, I was stoned with a gorgeous girl I was desperately trying to take home later and much younger. I don’t know if they are exact, but that’s as close as I could get a while back searching for it and it’s still there, so here it is. Happy New Year.

Meanwhile, it will be a quiet evening here. A DVD, a glass of wine and presumably all tucked up in bed before midnight.
Tomorrow will be our family Xmas gathering, because schedules.

New Year’s is always about music. How can you dance if there is no music?

Here’s two masterpieces in my humble opinion. Both long versions. Turn it UP.

Papa was a Rolling Stone- The Temptations (Full Version)

At the 5:07 mark is the note. That is vibrato, young man. Great music.

From Washington’s Blog: What The Russian Hacking Report DOESN’T Say

It doesn’t claim that it’s accurate. Instead, the report starts with a disclaimer, and uses the same type of weasel words - “as is”, “does not provide any warranties of any kind regarding any information” - that someone selling a lemon uses when he doesn’t want to talk about the fact that the blasted thing won’t run and doesn’t want to get sued for intentional misrepresentation or wilful concealment:
delete

It doesn’t mention Wikileaks … not even once. In other words, the report does not allege that the Russians gave any Democratic Party or Podesta emails to Wikileaks
It doesn’t raise the fact that recent intelligence service allegations that Russia hacked the NSA and Germany turned out to be false
It doesn’t address the fact that Russia is too sophisticated to have used widely- known hacking methods (and wouldn’t have prominently paid tribute to a famous Russian intelligence officer within the hacking code), and that anyone could have copied these methods and names

It doesn’t address the fact that top NSA whistleblowers say that the NSA possesses records showing exactly how the emails went from the Democratic Party to Wikileaks, as it tracks all electronic communications in the U.S.
It doesn’t address the fact that top former NSA and CIA officials (and Wikileaks) claim that these were not hacks at all … but rather leaks by American insiders
It doesn’t address American intelligence services’ less-than-stellar history of truthfulness, and the fact that they routinely skew intelligence to justify preordained policy outcomes
It doesn’t address the fact that - according to the Los Angeles Times - the U.S. interfered in foreign elections 81 times between 1946 and 2000 … compared to only 36 times by the Ruskies
It doesn’t address the fact that most Americans aren’t buying the whole claim that the Russians hacked our election

The majority of my town is elderly. Satellite internet service is very expensive here.

According to a survey my wife did for the state library system, 37% of the people in town are veterans.

As for the economic suicide part, well, FOX radio and such have worked long and hard to convince people here they would be better off without things like Social Security. Since the local newspaper is also owned by a conservative, it is really hard to get out a competing message.

High school seniors turn out to be pallbearers for a Navy veteran who had no living family when he died. None of the teenagers knew the man.

sunherald.com

Six young men from Long Beach High School gave up a morning of their Christmas vacation to pay final respects to a man they didn’t know.

The teens, all upperclassmen, served as pallbearers for Jerry Wayne Pino, who died Dec. 12 at age 70.

He served his country in Vietnam and wanted to be buried at Biloxi National Cemetery. Pino pre-arranged his service, but something was missing. Pallbearers were needed.

“He was an unclaimed veteran,” said Cathy Warden, who works at Riemann Family Funeral Homes, which handled Pino’s services. “Eva Boomer, who also works at Riemann’s, is a veteran, too. She asked me, ‘Do you think we could get (Warden’s son) Bryce and some upperclassmen to come out?’ “

Unfortunately, Bryce already had accepted an invitation out of town, which he nearly canceled to serve as one of Pino’s ballbearers. But he texted some classmates and within minutes, Boomer had six young men to serve as pallbearers.

My New Year’s Resolution is to not write “2016” on cheques after December 31.

I’ve had this resolution for the past several years (not writing the previous year on a cheque) and have kept it every year.

Me too. Haven’t written a check in a couple years, so it’s been easy.

Gee, my eyes are getting all watery

I suggested to my wife that I probably couldn’t get enough pallbearers for me, so she should put out a call on Fetlife. That would really upset the wingnuts at Westboro Baptist Church.

PBS will be showing a Frontline episode on Tuesday January 3rd. The subject will be Trump.

a) What my computer puts in for “check.” (My computer is set for Canadian English because my publisher is in British Columbia.)

b) It’s that piece of paper you fill in to pay a debt, which is processed through your bank. Someday it might be replaced by science-fictiony things like a plastic card with your banking data stored on it (I hear they have these things in some more advanced areas of the world).

No kidding. And Baked Alaska? What is this? A weird time warp. (Yes, yes it is.)
I could make a better meal, cheaper and wouldn’t mind the clean up of the kitchen.

Trump seems to be replaying all of his father’s generation’s ideas of “classy.”
The last time my parents mentioned Baked Alaska as an interesting dessert it was 1959.

As a middle-class suburbanite, I could make a credible Baked Alaska…in the 70s, when I was 10 years old.
