Since I’m babbling tonight let me tell you a cute story. I was delivering a load in Vermont, just a short jaunt from the New York line, Fairhaven VT I think. Back in the early 90’s. Anyhow, I’m in the liquor outlet and there is a Quebecer driver in there who just dropped where I did and he was buying up like 500 bucks worth of vodka to smuggle back into Quebec. He had his space under his sleeper all rigged out. Clean neat setup. I was impressed. I used to smuggle cigarettes into Ontario. He bought like at 7 bucks US a litre well stock and sold at 3 or 4 time that price because the taxes in Quebec were obscene. So in walks a little old lady between us, and she walks over to the help and asks; “Do you carry Wild Irish Rosé “? And she said “Rosé .” If you don’t know Wild Irish Rose, you never was looking at a buck 25 in your pocket and a desperate need to get hammered. Not a Rosé . No. Nope. Uh uh. I thought it was a scream. “Yes, and I’d like to see a, what do you call it. A, Driver? Oh, I know. Orange Driver. In the plastic bottle. In case I fall.”

I’m back. BOINC’s update crashed my computer so hard I had to do a system restore to the previous save point.

I’m guessing the answer from SETI’s aliens is “hell no, and if you contact us again we’ll blow up your computer again.”

It turned out that a particular font installed in the BOINC program was being called out as “in use” (despite BOINC being halted), and a file the reinstall program required was deleted halfway through the uninstall routine (so it borked).

Damn librul coastal elites at Berkeley, trying to make computers as complicated as modern telephones. /s

I just finished up this sweet little rose gold filled Lord Elgin watch from 1941. What do I mean by little? Well, here it is on the right, compared to a mens watch from 1962, and another from 2016. Each is about average size for the watches of their era. And yeah, the little rose number really IS a man’s watch!

Folks who just get into vintage watches often say, “But they’re so SMALL! I couldn’t wear a watch that small! I’d feel silly!”

It’s almost like we’re compensating for something.

1oz Cointreau Noir (this is what got finished - Cointreau with cognac mixed in)
0.5oz agave syrup

Nice thing about the smaller watches? You aren’t always clonking them on door frames, and your sleeve cuffs don’t hang up on them. They nestle between the ends of your radius and ulna and you can’t even feel them.

My drink for NYE was beer. We started with run-of-the-mill Chinese beer, then graduated to Tsingtao (Qingdao), which is somewhat better. Lisa, who is the foreign affairs officer at a local high school, brought a bottle of rum someone gave her six months ago. Lisa doesn’t drink hard liquor, a very typical thing for Chinese women, and anyway she said she had no idea what to do with the rum.

Some of the party drank rum and Cokes, but I stayed with beer so I could (1) find my way home and (2) not puke.

The international party included two Americans, a couple of Englishmen, a Welshman and a Ukrainian, plus an assortment of Chinese students and non-students. We played stupid games and had fun. Some of us also hit a local bar for hookah and overpriced drinks, but I still stuck with beer. (I did partake of the hookah, though. One lives only once.) I left the bar pretty quickly because of the cigarette smoke and overly loud music, and to rejoin the original party before 00:00 came.

I am just razzing ya. I’m looking forward to it anyhow. I’m taking my kid brother on his first trip overseas. My niece is growing up and is a helluva a kid. And my other brother, her father is someone I consider one of my best friends as well as someone I can talk to about anything. We understand each other now in a way we never did as boys.

It’s a New York thing. My mom did it only once, when she was in her 20s. Not sure about my dad, but he was unlikely to have wanted to. As for me, I’ve not done it yet. Living 7,500 miles away is one problem.

I’d do it once, just to say I’ve done it as a native New Yorker. It’s more fun with some friends to share the crazy experience.

That said, people come hours ahead of time just to stake out a place. That part makes it less appealing, but hey! With global warming, it might not be so cold in the future!

I ask myself that same question. I was in Sydney for NYE 2008 and while others wanted to be near the Sydney Harbour Bridge, I was out at Bondi Beach instead. Seeing Underworld perform for 2 hours and welcoming the new year on a beach with their iconic “Born Slippy” tune is something that can never be topped.

That’s also why I stay in for NYE nowadays since it’s hard to top that for me.

A programming note for Mr. Johnson about how LGF behaves on my computer.

Currently I have two tabs open in Firefox: one for LGF and one for Wonkette.

On the left of the title of the LGF tab normally appears the number of new comments since I last looked (if it is not open).

However, when there are no new comments, I get Windows 10’s spinning “busy” circle.

It’s not annoying or anything, I just noticed that the other day and thought “hmmm.”

On the other hand, the summation of my programming ability is the good old BASIC program:

Gotta call around to find out what’s going on with the village board meeting.

We meet on the first Monday of the month. However, New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday; as such, in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act signed under President Nixon, the officially observed holiday is January 2 (the date the board meeting should take place).

If you have government or banking business to take care of, you might note that Jan 2 is a Federal holiday and that place will likely be closed.

As for the only leftie politician holding office in a ninety thousand square mile area, I need to find out if I should show up for work Monday night, or if that is postponed to another day. No one told me anything, so my working proposition is we will still meet January 2.

At that point, I take up the new mantle of Chairman Pro-Tempore (vice mayor) of my town. (Target will be painted on me at that time.)

It’s not what I’d for my living but Bernie seems to view them all how like Republicans do federal workers and I think that’s a reckless way of viewing it. The executives? I can get that but but there’s a lot of rank and file people who work on Wall Street who I have no problem welcoming to our party.

Edibles take practice, they give a very strong body rush that can make people uncomfortable. a good dose to start is about 15 mg of thc, a third of a square of the chocolate bar I have. I ate a whole square. Smoking is much safer and a more accurate way to titrate the dose to ones desired high. I like edibles, but knowing the dosage is important and practice, practice, practice.

When I was living in Denver I lived a block away from a dispensary, so any kind of whatever was easy to come by. I remember my first brownie. Foolishly I ate the whole thing and became quite stoned for four or five hours. No panic reactions or anything like that (I’m a fully certified Colorado Ski Bum, I’m experienced in the ways of cannabis) but it was still pretty crazy. These days I enjoy a cannabis-infused sarsaparilla about once a month, which in a 12 oz. bottle contains about 25 mg of THC, which is a perfect amount for a few hours of Umphrey’s McGee through my headphones.

My once-a-year run is the village 5k run to the cemetery and back to town to raise money for the village library. I usually finish in the middle of the pack (though it is embarrassing to be passed on the road by women pushing prams while running).

Working in a ski shop in Beaver Creek, CO, the most popular question by adults was about our cannabis situation. The local paper made it easy for us to answer. I’d hand the paper to the customer and simply point them to the very last page, which is nothing but ads for cannabis dispensaries, including some that picks up their customers in a limousine, brings them to the store, and drives them back, and you can smoke in the limo too.

Most of the dispensaries in my county are located on a two-mile section of Highway 6 in an unincorporated part of the county. It’s now referred to as “The Green Mile.”

I fear Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III may put an end to all that.

I went in 1986, different world. You could wander into Times Square, hang out for a while and leave, come back later. No cattle pens like they have now, but the crowds were smaller.

That night, we got out of Times Square and as we walked around the corner, there was a full-on drunken brawl going on in the middle of the street. Good times.

Same here, 46 years too, only been doing it legally for the last few years (medical, Oregon). Even have a felony conviction from the late 80’s for growing it…lol! Wounded but not stopped by the War on Drugs. In the end, we won. Now we can freely travel the west (and best!) coast with our stash, safe from the law.

Past midnight in Mountain Time. Still hearing the occasional loud noises from the neighborhood, but nothing major this year. The sparkling cider glasses have been duly clinked and quaffed. Possibly the last New Years we’ll have both the 18-year-old offspring and his 92-year-old grandmother, with college looming next year, so enjoying having us all together.

Best wishes for the new year to all the Lizards, or at least the best we can hope for. May we all survive to toast the next one. May the forces of rationality get their shit together and mount an effective defense against the swamp of evil and ignorance we’re facing. May Charles have enough subscription money and patience to keep this raft of sanity afloat for us.

Exeter University in the United Kingdom is looking for volunteers for a study into the issue. If you are interested, the contact point is in the BBC article.

All of my life I have been aware of this problem in myself: I cannot right now picture my wife’s face even though we have been married over ten years; I cannot picture my mother’s face though she has been in my life half a century. I cannot picture the landscape around my village even though I have lived here since 2011. Sites like the iconic Chimney Rock or Scott’s Bluff are blanks. Though I have driven to Cheyenne many times, I cannot bring forth an image of the Rocky Mountains visible around the city.

The article has a screening quiz to determine if you might be suitable for the study: I have my result from that pasted below. The article is interesting, and if you are interested in taking Exeter University’s quiz it can be found there.

Approximately 5% of people fall into this, the lowest, score band. Your score suggests that your visual imagery is less rich than usual. Nebraska and Oklahoma are suing Colorado with the claims that:
a) Cannabis is illegal under Federal regulations, and
b) Colorado is causing an epidemic of cannabis smuggling into our states.

Oklahoma’s attorney general protested filing such a claim to Gov. Mary Fallin, on the grounds that Colorado could retaliate over Oklahoma’s loose gun laws; Gov. Fallin told him to proceed with the case.

Here in Nebraska, I guess the governor likes wasting money; it’s not like there wasn’t cannabis in Nebraska before Colorado made it legal there.

Our state floated the idea of closing every agricultural road that crosses the state line between Nebraska and Colorado, to make patrolling the nine paved roads that do much easier. Farmers and ranchers protested the state government’s proposal, noting that would create undue burdens on their operations.

As for state checkpoints, Nebraska also considered allowing private individuals with guns to patrol the state line. That was shot down in the Uincameral.

The state does set up the occasional checkpoint on I-76 and other paved roads, but more relies on stopping people doing things that are otherwise against the law to toss a car to look for smuggled cannabis.

For those that live here and are aware of where the gravel and dirt roads go across the state line, avoiding such checkpoints and such would be trivial; they only catch people who are not from around here.

There’s not much that can be done to keep Colorado cannabis in Colorado, so border police are especially vigilant. Oklahoma and Nebraska have sued the state of Colorado, citing the taxing of their law enforcement on the border and the huge influx of cannabis into their communities. The case is still pending.

I’ve read several stories of Colorado cannabis making its way into other states. I say whatever. Better the cannabis comes from legitimate Colorado businesses than a cartel in Mexico.

More on the local hair-on-fire complaints from my state about cannabis in Colorado:

Nebraska has a long state border with Colorado (between the Panhandle and the southwest corner of the state), but as I mentioned above, only nine paved roads cross that border.

The Nebraska State Patrol and county sheriff departments have looked for cannabis and other drugs long before Colorado made recreational maryjane legal; much of what police departments are doing around here is whining (increased funding? liberal hippies besides me invading our safe space? don’t know what they are on about).

As more states pass such laws making cannabis legal and taxing and regulating it, the whole conservative argument seems to be another losing rearguard action.

Two years ago, my wife and I attended a conference in Denver, where one of the speakers was the attorney for Denver. He was speaking about the (then new) laws surrounding cannabis (amongst other topics, though cannabis got the most questions from the audience) and how Colorado wanted “to get it right.”

I have no doubt that the feds cold push Oregon into prohibition again. The state commitment to the law isn’t there, they are just complying with it. If law enforcement and some in government could change it and blame the feds, I think they would do it.

I was through there during May of 1980… that’s a flat state! I was hitchhiking across the country after deciding that staying in Spokane, WA after Mt. St. Helens had coated it wasn’t an option and upstate NY was looking pretty good (family there). Had fun trying to avoid breathing mosquitoes at a park near Grand Island, rolling joints using a Frisbee as a tray while hauling ass as a passenger in the back of a 68 GTO on back roads through cornfields near Beatrice and discovering what Nebraska No-High was as I was leaving the state (saw it growing next to the Interstate and asked). During the cornfield run in the GTO, a duck that was startled flew up from the side of the road and bounced off of the windshield at 80 MPH, upper left corner, and it didn’t break it.

My comment while watching the duck ricochet off of the car and endo through the air had everyone choking with laughter, “I don’t think they normally fly that way.”

I just read that article. That guy sounds just like me.

I don’t remember dreams, or don’t dream. I can’t remember what my hometown in Michigan looks like, even the house I grew up in. I can’t even remember what the town I live in now looks like.

I can remember facts about all these things. I know my town has 124 people and my town in Michigan 192. I can find my home in my hometown (my cousin lives there now) because I can remember the directions to get there. (I once did that with my father’s home in Chicopee, Massachusetts when I was a Navy recruiter in Pittsfield, driving to Chicpoee and remembered all the directions from my bloody childhood.)

The OECD published a nonpartisan report about post-Brexit Britain in 2030 (can’t seem to link to it); it’s a depressing read but well worth perusing. Trump’s impact is virtually impossible to quantify right now, but my gut feeling is that it’s going to be at least as bad and probably worse.

Well, the area around Grand Island you note is certainly flat, but this part of Nebraska certainly is not. (Between the Sandhills, the bluffs, and in the west of the Panhandle where you can see the Rocky Mountains it ain’t flat.)

I came in on I-80, from the west, and stuck to it until Lincoln (nice town, hung out there for a couple of days with some cool people), then headed south to Beatrice and then eastward to Misery, I mean Missouri. ;)

ETA: I almost forgot that my Mom’s parents were from Scottsbluff! They grew up there, married and moved to Nyssa, Oregon.

We are apparently hard wired to hang onto what we know and believe like grim death. I applaud you for being able to accept new facts and change your mind-but it is hard, isn’t it? I’ve changed my mind on a few major things over the years and it is hard, even when the “thing” in question doesn’t have any deep roots in identity or world view.

I grew up thinking a cut would heal best if kept clean and dry and out in the open air. Why? My mother told me that. Fast forward to a few years ago…my daughter the doctor tells me that cuts heal better when covered and kept moist. I say really? She says yes and when she heard that she had to go research it a bit because she believed me all those years growing up.
So, medical knowledge changes. Mom was born in 1916 and back in her formative years, that was the medical opinion, but somewhere in the last century that “fact” changed and even my daughter was skeptical enough of new information to have to look it up and check on it. I now cover cuts with a bandaid after the application of a little Neosporin or some such.

I deleted that tweet about the election of Trump being America’s worst mistake, because I immediately got piled on by people lecturing me about things they considered worse mistakes, and many of them were insulting about it. If you leave a tweet up that people are determined to take offense about, the piling on never stops.

Apparently this is supposed to be evidence that I’m blinded by white privilege because slavery is a much worse “mistake.” Well, first - the reason why I call the election of Trump a horrible mistake in the first place is because of his attacks on people of color, and his xenophobic rhetoric against Mexicans, Muslims, and others.

Second, is it right to classify slavery as a “mistake?” It was a horrible atrocity, and an enormous violation of human rights and morality, but “mistake” doesn’t seem to apply in my opinion. It wasn’t a mistake, it was the deliberate exploitation of human beings as property, and the US wasn’t the only nation that did it. It’s been a constant throughout human history. Calling it a “mistake” not only minimizes it, it’s a misuse of the word.

I deleted that tweet about the election of Trump being America’s worst mistake, because I immediately got piled on by people lecturing me about things they considered worse mistakes, and many of them were insulting about it. If you leave a tweet up that people are determined to take offense about, the piling on never stops.

Apparently this is supposed to be evidence that I’m blinded by white privilege because slavery is a much worse “mistake.” Well, first - the reason why I call the election of Trump a horrible mistake in the first place is because of his attacks on people of color, and his xenophobic rhetoric against Mexicans, Muslims, and others.

Second, is it right to classify slavery as a “mistake?” It was a horrible atrocity, and an enormous violation of human rights and morality, but “mistake” doesn’t seem to apply in my opinion. It wasn’t a mistake, it was the deliberate exploitation of human beings as property, and the US wasn’t the only nation that did it. It’s been a constant throughout human history. Calling it a “mistake” not only minimizes it, it’s a misuse of the word.

And now I am sitting and stitching, because it’s a nice relaxing way to start my day. And my year. I’ve brainstormed a few goals that I’m going to work toward this year (not resolutions, just goals) and looking at cross stitch stuff. We’ll go see Rogue One …tomorrow, I think, and mr. klys wants to make bagels tonight.

Fortunately it’s not quite over at my daughter’s house because we will gather there for the family gift exchange this afternoon, which isn’t a huge deal this year because we mostly did donations, a little wine, and dinner. And catching up on life-which is the important part.

Ah, but you would be reducing the random pieces of paper floating around. They’d all be in the binder. Binders don’t float.

I keep one notebook that’s for the to do list, one that’s more general and can be rearranged (sort of like a binder …not sure where it is right now, need to find it…), and am debating adding a third. In part for things like stitching stuff. Need more creative things outside of the writing to recharge the writing batteries.

Actually, I’m somewhat of a binder addict. For many, many years I’ve had a half sheet size binder with a Day Timer type week on 2 pages layout with a space for monthly to-do lists, and sections in the back for things I want to read, gift ideas, stuff relevant to taxes, and so forth. I used to have a separate to-do list, because years ago it was too cluttered if I had all that on the page with what the whole family was doing. Since my younger child is now 34 it occurred to me that the to-dos would easily go on the calendar pages, and indeed they do.

For other stuff, there is the household maintenance notebook (when stuff was done, what paint was used (with samples) for each room, etc. There is a notebook with copies of the pattern envelopes for my most used sewing patterns and yardage amounts needed, and samples of the fabric I’ve used for my clothes, as well as anything in my stash. And recipe notebooks…

No binders full of women, though.

I just got done changing the oil on my 2010 Corolla. Imagine my delight the first time in 2010 I rolled it up my ramps, drained the case, and realized I needed a “special oil filter socket”. Huh? Huh? And my wife has the other car about 50 miles away………..and now it’s raining….
