This is well worth the read, with a good paragraph at the end:

We should not waste our time or imaginations trying to reconfigure Trumpism to explain why all of the “good people” supported him. It is more important to see it for what it is and resist. Hopefully, they will join us. If not, it will not be necessary to call them names, they will have named themselves.

Sometimes, there’s no need to rationalize.

Happy New Years, my fellow scaly ones. Sorry I’m late with that, ended up getting scheduled to work last night and so had to watch the ball drop from the hotel lobby. Then enjoy the entertainment of watching multiple drunks try to make it to their rooms under their own power.

Good times.

No, no, he was vilely misquoted, he never said that, he said something totally different, and if you give him 2,500 words he’ll prove it to his own satisfaction if no one else’s.

Shorter: Yup.

Longish thread…
Trying to make it a little more manageable…

1. Senator Mike Lee predicted that if Obama was reelected gas prices would be $6.60 by January 2017

2. Gingrich predicted that if Obama was reelected gas would reach $10 gallon.
Current average price is $2.33.

3. Mitt Romney predicted unemployment would be stuck at 8% if Obama was reelected. Unemployment is currently at 4.6%

4. Romney ran on a pledge to reduce unemployment to 6% by January 2017 by reversing Obama’s economic policies

7. Limbaugh said the collapse would be driven by California declaring bankruptcy. The state now has a 2.6B surplus

I’ve read this 1950 article though it was quite a while back. It’s pretty good, actually a response to some of the hysteria being spread at the time. Coniston concluded that a large scale attack would not be possible for several years, because of the small number of warheads the USSR was likely to have at that point ( less than 20) and the lack of delivery systems. The only aircraft they had that could reach the US from Soviet occupied territory was the Tupolev TU-4 (Boeing B-29) and even then just one way. The conclusion was that we had time, but we should use it wisely.

He could not have anticipated, of course, that they could destroy us with corrupt media and sleazy politicians.

James Rowen has been doing a great job keeping tabs on the WiGOP especially as it pertains to the environment. Here he has a collection of his reporting on the scrubbing of climate change from .gov website.

Documenting WI Gov. Walker’s attacks on science, climate change

On December 22nd, this blog carried the first disclosure that WI GOP Gov. Scott Walker’s “chamber of commerce mentality” Department of Natural Resources, (see part five of a recent series about his redefining the agency, here), had again deleted from taxpayer-paid, public web pages wording and information about climate, climate change and its human causation.

I was familiar with Carr, but went to the Wiki page on him just to brush up.

Saw this:

Wiki - Howie Carr

For years Carr has had a feud with former Boston Globe and Herald guest columnist Mike Barnicle, calling him a “hack” and saying he (Carr) wanted to be the Herald’s “nonfiction columnist”[4] (Barnicle resigned from the Boston Globe over allegations of plagiarism and fabrication of stories.)[5]

I forgot all about Barnicle and his issues at the Globe. But it sure says a lot about why he is on Morning Joke.

And that they all hang out together is just more proof they aren’t journalists, but entertainers. Fuck ‘em all.

Holiday mechanic update:
Plug #3 has been removed! It took some ingenuity, including a torch…
He was able to slide down the rubber boot on steering column. Gave him just enough room to get the 5/8 plug socket that has a 3/4 inch nut setup on the end, but not enough room to get the universal into the plug socket.
Took the torch, heated a 3/4 inch box end wrench, bent at 90 degrees, and was able to slip it over the 3/4 nut on the end of the plug socket. Broke the plug loose with the 3/4 inch wrench the bent, using an extension on the other end as a cheater.
Also had to bend the 5/8 to remove the plug the rest of the way.

He is now taking a break (and warming up in the house) before he heads back out to the shop to install the new plug.

OK, I got my 30 minutes in my target heart rate zone done. ‘Spinning’. On a bike indoors. (Baby, it’s cold outside. Also, raining.) Boring as hell. When I do it by ‘running’ on the track, I can count my laps, time my laps, watch the ravens, greet the walkers and runners sharing the facility. In here I spent my time proving my grade school teachers wrong.

Grade school was in Southern California, and it would get hot. All the teachers hated it when a classroom full of kids would fold up their Weekly Readers and fan themselves. The teachers always told us the action of fanning caused us to generate more body heat and warm us up more. (Their real problem was the noise.) I found that I could lower my heart rate by cooling myself by fanning (with a nearby item that was on display) while I continued to pedal. HAH! Take that, Mr. Allen and Mrs. Aase!

There was air conditioning in some of the buildings, but grades 5 and 6 were in the portables. Yup, we were boomers.

Tried some thin wire taped to socket, extending up and out of spark plug well, so I could retrieve socket from installed spark plug(s). No Go. Not enough space in the well for socket plus that thin wire. Tried instead a strip of electrical tape— inside socket to outside of socket, and up the 8inch extension. That was thin enough to fit. I’ll bite: What consequences for her actions should she suffer for doing a legal thing that millions of other women do in private and many also do in public, all legally?

I suppose that my town could have voted against me for editing erotic Romance novels, instead of whether I could do the job or not.

As I said in the comment above, there are much more important things to pillory Mrs. Trump over than her choice to do a legal photoshoot.

It’s either pro-choice, or control a women’s body. You only get to pick one.

Nope. I am acting like she is being slut-shamed for making legal pictures and engaging in legal activity for which she was paid. I thought Democrats favoured women doing what they liked with their own bodies as long as it didn’t hurt another person. Shall we slut-shame women who get abortions next, or use contraception, or don’t get married before having sex, or is that different?

First ride of the New Year - 32.6 miles. No coyotes this time, but it was a great day for desirable cars!

There was a pristine red pre-‘73 Porsche 911; a beautiful, new, deep candyapple red Shelby GT350; a British Racing Green Bentley Continental convertible with a tan top; an electric blue Lotus Evora; and the MOST desirable (to me, anyway), a Hemi Orange 1970 Plymouth GTX Hardtop! Gorgeous! and with just the right throaty rumble!

The Porsche and the GTX are both pre-emission control era cars, so even my lousy sniffer could smell the half-burnt hydrocarbons as they passed - on the OTHER SIDE of the road! No wonder gas mileage was so shitty - they only used half of it!

What seems to have been forgotten in all the brohaha over Mrs. Trump’s nude photos is it wasn’t either Democrats or Donald Trump that started it; it was Ted Cruz.

She worked as a model. Many models (and actresses, etc.) do some work nude or partially nude. There is no shame in that. Rumors about her being an escort are just that, rumors, and without any actual evidence should be ignored.

No, the insult is to those who don’t share such a puritanical view about nudity. Using Melania to attack Trump is every bit as disgusting as the “Republican women hot, Democratic women not” memes.

It’s those voters who are trashy. The ones flying Dixie Swastikas and Nazi Swastikas and Pepe the Frog memes. There are plenty of things to go after Mrs. Trump for (such as her hypocrisy of seeking to end on-line bullying when she is married to a first-class on-line bully).

And you have that right…no one said you should. Your opinion is not wrong.

The reason I brought up my point is it always are the Democrats that worry about every little thing being done the right way. How does that work out in the long run? And I only use it as an example. What was all that about political correctness and how it all hurt Democrats?

It is just something to consider about what we get upset over and what should really be attacked. Political perspective.

Trump runs around actually being quoted “grab that pu**y” and dodging rape and groping charges and gets elected. He talks about his daughter in a sexual way.

We fight over images that can be seen with a Google search by a 10 year old inquisitive boy.

I find it out of balance in the context of the very real slut shaming the GOP actually does do and the “screwing” we are all going to get by their legislation.

THIS!

I do not need to see the photos of some skinny nekkid person (and truthfully, her photos really have no artistic values and her body wasn’t all that much to brag about, but that’s just my opinion).
But I can still (and will) call out the hypocrisy to anyone who calls it “classy”.
It is not classy. Not. At. All. Ever.

The Trumpers also think the photo with the yam sitting in a gold chair, Melania’s dress flying around and the kid on a lion is the ultimate in class, so we can not only call them on their hypocrisy but also on their utter lack of taste.

While I wholeheartedly agree, remember Will Rogers words, “I belong to no organized party. I am a Democrat.”

It’s going to be hard for our party, and what’s going to be even harder is we’re going to need to ally ourselves with Republicans such as Ana Navaro and the governor of Utah. At the same time, I doubt too many people would have described 1940 America as being able to organize to fight a war.

The fight is not over the images per se. Rather, it’s about how women are treated.

Is Melania classy? Not in my opinion, but that has nothing to do with the photo(s) in question.

Are the Republicans massive hypocrites and should we point that out? Absolutely. The list of hypocrisies from Republicans is virtually endless. The problems with Trump as well. Those are fair game. There is no lack of ammunition.

Should we turn to Republican scorched earth tactics and do anything to win, throwing our ethics and morals aside? And if we do, is that winning?

I’d love to see karma for all the terrible things said and done to a great POTUS and FLOTUS. But I don’t think attacking Melania for posing nude would be, well, classy.

I only bring up my points to try to weigh it all.

Two quick points. And I’m taking off…got some drumming to do.

1. If you don’t win, you can’t do anything good. I don’t like it, but it is a fact. Do we need to get down in the gutter? No. How down in the gutter actually is this in real world terms? (It is a BIG world).

2. Does the actual circa 2020 era voter care about this? The real Donald Trump got elected. These pictures did not matter to the people that voted for him. Goes to what I was talking about perspective.

And for clarity. I do a lot of political based images around here. I would not have made that particular image. But then, I also understand why it was made. Also goes to perspective.

Later Lizards…

The media had no problem at all saying “lie” or any variation thereof when Hillary was involved, but when it’s Trump, they can’t be objective. They have to present “both sides” and rely upon the public’s good judgment to decide that Trump is full of shit.

Most banana republics have to take deliberate action to make the media their bitches. Trump doesn’t even have to work that hard.

The media constantly used the word “lie” around Hillary. They’d print headlines about how she “lied” to investigators, how she “lied” to the public, about how voters saw her as a “liar” and her reputation as a “liar” was hard to overcome.

But with Trump, they never want to use the word “lie.” Even after a year of boasting about how you can take him at his word, every time his “word” is found to be totally at odds with objective reality, the media will still insist on this “both sides” narrative.

Somewhere in the bowels of Hell, Nixon is absolutely livid at the sort of favorable coverage Trump is receiving.

To me, the media has completely failed to realize what their job actually is: To be the professional eyes and ears of the public. Most people do not have the time to go down to their government office and find out what every official is doing. That’s what the press is for. We have doctors because people don’t have time to research every disease and how to determine which they have. The press is there to help us figure out what is right and what is wrong.

I keep looking at those old sparkplugs and am amazed there was ANY spark crossing that gap.

Many cars are nightmares to work on, even for routine maintenance such as spark plug replacement. There are a lot of specialized wrenches just for that purpose, because there ain’t no way to reach the plug otherwise.

Of course, some people make their own special wrenches. Show offs. ;-)

Many a time, while working on a car, I’ve felt that the designers should be forced to perform typical maintenance work on the vehicles prior to final approval of the design. Seriously, you shouldn’t need to pull an engine just to change the plugs.

And to your post, yes, I’m also amazed there was any spark. Wow.

Remember when the first few pages of Trump’s tax returns were released by the NYT? The Trump campaign’s first response was not to address the contents of the release, it was to scream that the NYT and whoever their source was had broken the law and demanded swift legal action. Herr Hairpiece himself threatened to sue the NYT for the release.

So to have them now suggest that the media should be focusing on the contents of the Russian hacking is just par for the hypocritical course.

The NYT obsessed about Hillary’s emails and published a letter from its editorial board demanding Hillary cut ties with the Clinton Foundation. CNN’s CEO not only hired a Trump mouthpiece, but defended him when it became public knowledge that said mouthpiece was still on the Trump payroll. And now the WSJ editor is arguing that calling Trump a liar violates a reporter’s “objectivity” and its better to just present a story and expect the public to decide he’s a liar.

The fourth estate is quietly installing a gold “TRUMP” sign over their front door.

Let’s be blunt. Trump’s rise can be blamed on one thing. The fact that the Republican base could not accept that the country elected a man with the name Obama President and that resulted in their base wanting someone that would be open about the stuff that past Republican nominees would be more subtle about. Blaming Stewart and Colbert is bullshit.

I’m going to guess he never watched a single episode.

Not to mention the people who tend to spread Fake News stories aren’t typical TDS or Colbert viewers.

Hmmm. I’m no expert in this, but isn’t it highly illegal to publicly solicit sales of equity?

[Embedded content]

There are ways to offer equity for startups, pre-IPO, using something like SeedInvest. But the announcement usually comes from the organization arranging the investment, not from the company itself. Likewise, a company seeking angel investors normally would approach such people privately. Appealing for investors on Facebook is pretty bush-league, but consider who we are dealing with here.

Rage Furby is always bragging about all the billionaires he meets with. So, why is he soliciting investors on FB?

So this Lee Siegel person thinks a couple of comedians appearing on a channel called Comedy Central need to demonstrate more journalistic integrity than, say, “journalists” who write for publications like the Wall Street Journal or appear on Fox News (like, for example, Lee Siegel).

Lee Siegel is doing the most basic rhetorical fuckery which is flipping, or am no you are fallacy. It’s just junk food intellectualism.

A couple of satirists mocking current events and politicians is not fake news. Either he’s stupid or making some faulty analogy because/mainstream media.

Yep, the blame rests squarely on the right, which has pushed people to disbelieve anything they don’t agree with. Fox is one source of this.

Up at my job, full of lots of engineers, one of the cars has an “I don’t believe the liberal media” bumper sticker.

re: #217 Anymouse

cjr.org

Lee Seigel of the Columbia Journalism Review is blaming Jon Stewart and Stephen Cobert for the rise of Donald Trump.

He accuses them of exploiting the public with their “fake news” (invoking Stephen Cobert’s word “truthiness” - which Cobert used to describe what others were doing, not what he was doing).

Lee Siegel — he of the infamous Sprezzatura sock puppet — knows all about fake media.

The fact that the Columbia Fucking Journalism Review is willing to publish anything he writes is proof enough that they’re desperate to cast blame on anyone other than the traditional news media.
