They’ll do it by manipulating the standard deduction threshold. Make sure that only someone who is rich and doesn’t actually need the mortgage deduction (which can be taken only if you’re itemizing returns) can take it.

In other words, the GOP will crater the housing market, make it more expensive for most everyone in the middle class, and preserve the benefit for the richest folks out there.

Rinse and repeat. This is GOP policy. This is also why simplification is a misnomer. The GOP is intent on “simplifying” how much money the rich can keep, while shifting the burdens elsewhere.

That’s not to say there aren’t good reasons to phase out the mortgage interest deduction over time, but that’s not the GOP plan. Phasing it out over time would reduce the negative effects on homeowners who bought expecting to have the deduction make the purchase more affordable.

Why do people think conservatives will settle for Fox Lite when getting the pure uncut stuff is as easy as changing the channel?

re: #3 The Madness of King Orange (aka Sophist)

While the me-too channels will try to become Fox lite, the real Fox is already way ahead of them and going after the underserved white supremacist audience. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Ann Coulter or Laura Ingraham get shows there since both of them target that audience.

For the upper middle class, I would think so. Make enough money that you have a non-trivial state tax bill and losing that deduction could hurt a lot. And generally you’re not quite well-off enough to have all the fun tricks that the really wealthy can use.

I guess some tax increases are good so long as they only hit the right people.

It effectively is a tax hike for most people who would take the mortgage interest deduction and would instead have to take the standard deduction, which is a lower adjustment.

They’ll do it by manipulating the standard deduction threshold. Make sure that only someone who is rich and doesn’t actually need the mortgage deduction (which can be taken only if you’re itemizing returns) can take it.

I don’t really understand the problem here. If they are raising the standard deduction so that it doesn’t make sense for people to itemize, that’s a GOOD thing, not a bad one.

re: #51 steve_davis

It’s the way that they’re doing it - selling it as a tax cut, when it is hiding a hike for a significant portion of American homeowners (who are also taxpayers in the middle/upper middle class).

The key here is that they’ll be devaluing the single biggest asset that these people will ever own - their home:

How so? Itemizing only makes sense for taxpayers if it will save them more than the standard deduction. Since most homeowners don’t pay $24,000 a year in mortgage interest, and Republicans want to eliminate most other major deductions, including the break for state and local taxes, it will be extremely difficult for most households to hit the threshold at which itemizing becomes reasonable. The Tax Policy Center estimates that “38 million (84 percent) of the 45 million filers who would otherwise itemize in 2017 would opt for the standard deduction” instead. To be clear, these people should receive a tax cut—they would only pick the standard deduction in order to save money. The entire point of expanding it is to give working households a break while reducing their paperwork. But as a side effect, the tax advantage of owning a home would disappear, which should hurt real estate prices.

The combination hit of the state and local tax deduction, plus the mortgage interest deduction would essentially hurt folks in Blue States a lot more since they usually have higher taxes, plus higher mortgages due to higher home prices (NY/NJ versus Arkansas for example). It would hurt mobility for these people, and sellers will feel it hardest.

Give and take, and the GOP is taking. A lot.

So…I’m finishing up Hubris right now. It’s about the Iraq War, and it’s filled with stuff about the chafing between the WH’s people and the CIA. It makes me…not optimistic…that the CIA will stand up to another disinformation campaign. They didn’t completely knuckle under for Bush/Cheney, but they also didn’t make any big noise that would have been helpful.

But it also suggests why certain nutters and party hacks might be cool with shitcanning the CIA and start a sexy new confirmation bias “intelligence” intelligence agency: the old school intel service might be dodgy as fuck ethically, but they don’t work backwards to prove an assumption.

I sure hope that AT SOME POINT, doubling down when he’s proven wrong will stop paying off for him. So far, though, it’s always worked.

But, seriously - this has gone so far beyond just liking Putin, and the pro-Russia tilt has been the ONLY thing on which he’s been completely consistent, and the only thing his campaign cared about in the RNC platform, and now, the extremes he’s going to to defend Russia - I can’t help believing that Putin owns him somehow, whether it’s actual debt owned by Russian oligarchs, or video of him banging a skinny, blonde Russian prostitute while screaming “Yes, Ivanka, yes! Who’s your Daddy?”.

VOCABULARY WORD OF THEY DAY:

UBERMENSCH

The Übermensch (German for “Overman, Superman, Superhuman, Hyperman, Hyperhuman”; German pronunciation: [ˈˀyːbɐmɛnʃ]) is a concept in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. In his 1883 book Thus Spoke Zarathustra (German: Also sprach Zarathustra), Nietzsche has his character Zarathustra posit the Übermensch as a goal for humanity to set for itself. It is a work of philosophical allegory, with a structural similarity to the Gathas of Zoroaster/Zarathustra.

This was a “funny ha ha” fear for “we’ll see what happens” types before the election. Now that it’s clear that our leader will likely share intel with Russia through various channels known (Manafort, etc.) and unknown, our assets better fucking get moving. That’s why Putin didn’t expel anyone: better to have the known assets and diplomats who are already well surveilled stay right in front of you where you can also keep the harassment campaign going.

Don’t worry, soon they can put in little efficiency apartments in all the empty big stores in the malls, like the soon to be former Macy’s out at Eastlend Mall.

And haven’t you heard about those former metal shipping containers being turned into affordable digs for the modern world? I think someone is trying sell them now in Columbus. No idea where you put one, unless there is going to be some kind of place like the classic trailer courts.

Hey, not to worry—we’re all in good hands. Trump does have this delightful person, Katy Talento, who will serve on Trump’s Domestic Policy Council working on healthcare policy.

She thinks birth control causes abortions and deliberate miscarriages, and that fertilized eggs need to “hunker down.”

When she was hired by Tillis in NC, Planned Parenthood said,

Birth control does not ‘cause’ abortion, birth control prevents the need for abortion, reducing unintended pregnancy and helping North Carolina women and families achieve economic success,” she said. “It is deeply troubling that Sen. Tillis has brought on someone who clearly does not understand how birth control works to be one of his closest advisors.”
