After Briefing, Trump Claims Hacking Had “Absolutely No Effect” on Election (That’s Not What the CIA Said)

He’s lying again
Politics • Views: 50,656

So Donald Trump had his long-awaited intelligence briefing on Russian interference with the presidential election today, came out and immediately issued a statement claiming hacking had “absolutely no effect” on the election.

Note that this isn’t what the intelligence agencies say. Not at all. James Clapper testified yesterday that there was no way to determine how much or how little influence the Russian interference had.

Trump added this categorical denial himself. And that tells us his true agenda: to do and say everything he can to divert attention away from Russia’s efforts to get him elected.

Here’s his full statement:

UPDATE at 1/6/17 12:50:29 pm by Charles Johnson

Here’s the declassified version of the intelligence report on Russia’s attempts to influence our election, making it very clear that Trump’s claim of “absolutely no effect” is simply nonsense.

It was widely reported that they were.

The only way this can be made into an issue is if they prove that the voting machines were tampered with…that is not clear as far as I can tell.

At what point is Treasonous behavior actually called Treason by the press?

re: #8 Patricia Kayden

Has been the case for quite some time, at least for flights in the US.

You may transport unloaded firearms in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage only. Declare the firearm and/or ammunition to the airline when checking your bag at the ticket counter. The container must completely secure the firearm from being accessed. Locked cases that can be easily opened are not permitted.

From TSA. They have helpful reminder signs at the check-in desks.

Still a dumb idea. Why should military ID holders get to have access to weapons at airports? Can’t they ship them ahead via Fedex? No one except security guards and police officers should have access to weapons in airports. I didn’t even know that this was a thing. Dang it. I’m always traveling. Something else to worry about.

Eclectic Cyborg  Jan 6, 2017 • 12:55:18pm

Well the presumption is those in the Military are responsible enough and well enough trained to be a minimal risk when transporting weapons.

re: #16 klys (maker of Silmarils)

Note: this does not require military ID. And from what it sounds like, TSA and the airline did things right. There’s no way to prevent someone from picking up their checked luggage, going into a bathroom, loading the gun that was in their checked luggage, and coming out firing. It’s the same as someone coming in through the doors to pick someone up and opening fire. That’s not a secure section of the airport.

In other words, this latest atrocity is just another instance of business as usual in any US public location where the second amendment is in effect.

If guns are basically everywhere because of the second amendment, then it is inevitable that crimes of this kind will be way too common.

Pretty much.

If it had been in a secure part of the airport then it would have been a different story, but I saw a tweet go by in my timeline that claimed this was a failure on the part of the airline and TSA and it was like …really? Really?

I think my feelings on the gun culture we have here in the states are well known here so I don’t feel the need to go into how stupid it is but I do want the facts to be clear.

You’d think there’d be protocol to provide extra “security” for checked bags with guns/ammo. Have those bags put aside in a secure location, and the owners escorted out of the airport to their mode of transportation.

Firearms

When traveling, comply with the laws concerning possession of firearms as they vary by local, state and international governments.
Declare each firearm each time you present it for transport as checked baggage. Ask your airline about limitations or fees that may apply.
Firearms must be unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container and transported as checked baggage only. Only the passenger should retain the key or combination to the lock.
Firearm parts, including magazines, clips, bolts and firing pins, are prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage.
Replica firearms, including firearm replicas that are toys, may be transported in checked baggage only.
Rifle scopes are permitted in carry-on and checked baggage.

This is the first I have ever heard of a legally checked gun being used in a crime at an airport.

I just can’t get over the strange & uncharted waters we find ourselves in. For most of my youth, I watched as various members of my family joined the military to hold back the Russian menace to our way of life.

Some of those members never came back. Some came back … but not really.

And now?

I posted this as a reply to the rather excellent page by Thanos, that dovetails with what I posted yesterday about the Russians in LA celebrating the bloodless conquest of the U.S. by Putin:

Yeah, this will be an enduring theme throughout the entire Trump administration.

There’s a Russian official who is about to become internationally famous.

You know that it’s only a matter of time before the Cut-out Man’s name is leaked. There’s too much pressure for it not to.

The slow drip, drip, drip, of disclosures is likely to just torture Trump. In much the same way that the endless Benghazi and email “investigations” tormented Clinton.

In about 2 years, the democrats, if patterns hold, will retake one of the wings of Congress. And then the real fun will begin. They’ll have powers to open investigations, and the deep motivation to do so, after years of fuckery by the GOP.

hikikomori. A word I have never seen before.

Definition: Hikikomori ?, literally “pulling inward, being confined”, i.e., “acute social withdrawal”) is a Japanese term to refer to the phenomenon of reclusive adolescents or adults who withdraw from social life, often seeking extreme degrees of isolation and confinement.

And yes, it would apply as people have fewer and fewer reasons to get out and about (though frankly, I think getting out is critical to my personal well being; as I work from home occasionally, I find myself climbing up walls if I do it too much). Need more stimulation than staring at computer screens.

Fine, don’t vaccinate your kids. But they should be banned from public schools, libraries, pools, parks, museums, etc for their safety and the safety of everybody else’s kids.

Not just kids, either. My brother-in-law has Crohns and is on a drug that, while it seems to be giving him some relief, is an immunosuppressant. Everybody on those types of drugs is at elevated risk, too.

I personally think Twitter’s verified system was cynically designed to legitimize and capitalize upon society’s class system, to reward and weaponize fame and feed our worst cliquish instincts. It also makes no sense for a company that has struggled so hard to actually profit from its platform to stubbornly refuse to set up a simple payment system for verification. But what Wikileaks is proposing here isn’t even attempting to be a solution, they’re just proposing to poison the well simply because they can.

Senate Bill to Slash Embassy Security Funds in Half Until US Embassy Jerusalem Officially Opens
Excerpt:

The current bill, S.11, which had been read twice and referred to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee includes the elimination of the waiver and similar language on funding restriction but targets a specific State Department funding — not funds for the “Acquisition and Maintenance of Buildings Abroad” but for “Embassy Security, Construction, and Maintenance.” The bill further includes restrictions for all security, construction, and maintenance funding worldwide for FY2018 and FY2019 except for the embassy in Tel Aviv until its relocation.

Restriction on Funding Subject to Opening Determination.–Not more than 50 percent of the funds appropriated to the Department of State for fiscal year 2017 under the heading “Embassy Security, Construction, and Maintenance” may be obligated until the Secretary of State determines and reports to Congress that the United States Embassy in Jerusalem has officially opened.

Just so we’re clear, three American senators including those who were screaming #BENGHAZI for the last several years have put forward a bill that would freeze half the State Department funding on embassy security until the new secretary of state reports to Congress that the US Embassy in Jerusalem has “officially opened.”

Going back to the issue of fire-arms on airplanes. In Alaska it’s very common seeing cased firearms being loaded/unloaded onto the commercial airliners. Big game hunting is a very popular activity here. The requirements are that the fire-arm be unloaded and in a hard sided, locked case. Trigger locks on the fire-arm are recommended. Ammunition must be in a second container. Both the fire-arm and ammo must be shipped in the cargo hold of the aircraft.

One item interested me from the first reports of the shooting. That was that the bad guy traveled on a flight from Canada. Since Canada has very strict gun laws for their citizens and even stricter laws for non-citizens, how did this apparently US citizen get access to a fire-arm in Canada.

I wonder how many churches the Ft. Lauderdale shooter lived within walking distance of back in Alaska and WTF it should matter?

If anyone’s interested, here’s the website for the Anchorage mosque, the Islamic Community Center of Anchorage Alaska (ICCAA): alaskamasjid.com

Remember the 30 Mosques in 30 Days project & blog from Ramadan 2011? Anchorage was the first place they visited, even though they didn’t actually have a formal mosque then. Here’s a blog post about the Muslim community there—it has an interesting background and their self-sufficient, practical, can-do attitude seems to be a great fit with Alaska’s culture.

That’s all. I just wanted to put a human face on that community for you guys in case the RWNJ assholes attempt to slime them by making the mosque they worked so hard to build into a shadowy den of extremists that must have somehow exerted its sinister influence on a shooting that occurred nearly 4,000 miles away, FFS.

Canadian gun laws are strict compared to most of the US, but not the rest of the world. Any US citizen can bring their gun into Canada by filling out this form and paying $25 at the point of entry, handgun permits cost $50 and require a different form. You have to fill the form out in triplicate but you MUST NOT SIGN IT until you’re at the border crossing, the Canadian customs / border patrol officer must witness your signature.

Note, the Canadians aren’t at all keen on “self defense” being your reason for transporting a restricted firearm like a handgun. The most common reason I’m familiar with is driving from mainland Washington State to/from Point Roberts or to/from Alaska. You have to comply with Canadian storage laws in transit. Protection against wildlife is a legit reason for bringing in a non-restricted longarm.

It is pretty much guaranteed that they will be flying Confederate Battle Flags at the inauguration parade- it is VERY present at all school related events. This high school literally flaunts their racist roots in the face of everyone in the area - also it should be noted that it is one of the most segregated schools in the region:
Minority enrollment is 5% of the student body (majority Black), which is less than the state average of 54% - this is for over 2000 students in grades 9-12, and the western part of the parish where it is located is roughly 40% minority.

I watched that stream for nearly 20 minutes. Probably the most pointlessly funny thing I’ve seen in a while.

While I was watching they decided to get married and have 7 kids, and the male thing got mad because the female thing didn’t know the names of the kids they planned to have. :)

And you have no idea to this day what its purpose in existing is, other than to vex you.

X - The New World (Original Music Video)

Honest to goodness
The bars weren’t open this morning
They must have been voting for a new president of something
Do you have a quarter?
I said, “Yes”, because I did
Honest to goodness, the tears have been falling
All over this country’s face

It was better before, before they voted for What’s-His-Name
This was supposed to be the new world
It was better before, before they voted for What’s-His-Name
This was supposed to be the new world

Flint Ford Auto
Mobile, Alabama
Windshield Wiper
Buffalo, New York
Gary, Indiana
Don’t forget the Motor City
Baltimore and D.C
Now all we need is

Don’t forget the Motor City
This was supposed to be the new world
Don’t forget the Motor City
This was supposed to be the new world

All we need is money
Just give us what you can spare
Twenty or thirty pounds of potatoes
Or twenty or thirty beers
A turkey on Thanksgiving
Like alms for the poor
All we need are the necessities and more

It was better before, before they voted for What’s-His-Name
This was supposed to be the new world
It was better before, before they voted for What’s-His-Name
This was supposed to be the new world

Don’t forget the Motor City
This was supposed to be the new world
Don’t forget the Motor City
This was supposed to be the new world

I often take photos before and during disassembly, but as you note, some details are too small in drawings or photos.

The worst thing? Completing assembly and then finding a leftover screw or fastener. I know it was in place for a reason, so it’s time to disassemble again. Fortunately it doesn’t happen often. ;-)

When you’re taking apart a watch - ANY watch - the first few times, taking pictures at each stage is very helpful for reassembly. If it’s more complicated than a simple manual-wind watch, it’s crucial.

I did an alarm watch last year, and without the pics I took during disassembly, I’d’a been fucked.

Trump Effect? /sorry not sorry.

Seriously though, retailers are having a tough time dealing with online sales eroding brick and mortar sales. Those that adapt will survive. Those that don’t will disappear, and that also means job losses in retail sector - which is often the entry point to many in workforce.

Damn. The Limited is a Columbus original started in 1963 by the Wexner family and grown to national status by Les Wexner in the Kingsdale Shopping Center in Upper Arlington, an upper middle class to rich suburb.

I worked at Shelly Berman Communicators back in the mid-70s and they had the Limited account as their ad agency of record.

And now it looks like it is gone. I can’t remember, but I think Wexner spun off The Limited many years ago. But still another one bites the dust.

Wexner’s companies now are Victoria’s Secret, Pink, Bath & Body Works, Henri Bendel
and La Senza.

You can find all kinds of Limited Company warehouses and offices on the east side of town.

Add this to Macy’s shuttering stores, which took over the great old Lazarus stores a long time ago.

I wonder if The Don is going to bring those stores back? Nah.

Clearly the FBI had more important things on their plate in November, like helping Trump win the election.

Sarcasm aside, I don’t know what options would have been available. We can say, here, that someone who is clearly not operating on the same plane of reality as the rest of us shouldn’t have access to guns but it remains very unclear to me what mechanisms exist to remove his access to guns - or how long he would need to be under treatment before he would be able to get them back, or what checks there are to make sure he’s continuing treatment once he has them back. And that drives to one of the main issues here - access to guns is way too easy and the threshold to lose them is high. Higher than the threshold to lose your right to vote, it feels like.*

Today’s report from the IC, unsurprisingly, has a lot of Dems saying that the Russian actions MAY have won the election for Trump. The margin of Trump’s victory is basically 80,000 votes in 3 states out of 13.9 Million votes cast. That’s a small enough margin that saying out of hand that Russian hacking/leaking/trolling didn’t swing it is every bit as unproven as that it DID swing it. And in every one of those states, the ‘Other’ vote is at least 5x bigger than Trump’s margin.

But no, there are all sorts of clowns out there saying, “It wasn’t the Russians! She was a flawed candidate!/Comey/Emails/She didn’t pay enough attention to the white folks!”

Another thought about this election: Not only was it about racism, but I think there are a lot of people that, when given too much free time, look for ways to interfere in other people’s business. I’m talking about the “Christians” that need to save us all from gay marriage, abortion, and whatever else they get in their heads (but don’t suggest that people shouldn’t worship money).

We’ve talked about what we should do as automation takes more and more jobs. One suggestion is to cut back on the work week. Which would be a good idea, but then you’d have even more people with free time. I could suggest education for the other two days, which would be really good for learning the skills needed for future jobs, but there would be people who would think they need to do something else, like seeing if what you are doing is a good thing.

Nope. Anyone can check a gun and/or ammunition. Has nothing to do with military IDs, thanks. This is easy information for even non-military or non-military veterans to look up.

That said, I presume the regulation exists because of folk who do things like sport shooting, hunting, &c + NRA lobbying.

Regulations for checking firearms from the TSA:

tsa.gov

You may transport unloaded firearms in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage only. Declare the firearm and/or ammunition to the airline when checking your bag at the ticket counter. The container must completely secure the firearm from being accessed. Locked cases that can be easily opened are not permitted. Be aware that the container the firearm was in when purchased may not adequately secure the firearm when it is transported in checked baggage.

Contact the TSA Contact Center with questions you have regarding TSA firearm regulations and for clarification on what you may or may not transport in your carry-on or checked baggage.

Exactly, we can’t look at the Russian hacking effort by itself, it was part of a confluence of factors that included Wikileaks as the fence for the stolen information and the national media as the crooked referee peddling a false equivalence narrative that overhyped the importance of the leaks in order to profit off of a close election narrative. Add in the overtly unethical, baseless, and in my opinion illegal, last minute election influence committed by Comey, the obviation of the popular vote & I don’t think it’s at all a stretch to call the end result “corrupted” if not outright stolen.

Which is what’s really dangerous for the country going forward, deep down Trump KNOWS he doesn’t deserve the Presidency but he’s such a damaged personality that only psychological tools for dealing with that fact are deceit, denial and externalized rage.

Remember when Fox news “straight” news anchor, Bret Baier reported, just days before the election, that FBI was likely to hand down indictment against Clinton Foundation?

Later he apologized for using the word “indictment” since that is not the purview of the FBI, but didn’t back off from general story. Now I am wondering about his “sources”.

In his original report on Wednesday, Baier said his sources also told him this: “The Clinton Foundation investigation is so expansive, they have interviewed and re-interviewed many people. They described the evidence they have as ‘a lot of it’ and said there is an ‘avalanche coming in every day.’ “

That is very different from what the New York Times reported on the same day: “The investigation, based in New York, had not developed much evidence and was based mostly on information that had surfaced in news stories and the book ‘Clinton Cash,’ according to several law enforcement officials briefed on the case.”

All the big conservative media covered this…sans the retraction part.

As of Friday morning, Sean Hannity’s website still has a story on its home page about Baier’s “bombshell report.” Hot Air’s home page employs the same language: “Bombshell: FBI’s ‘far more expansive’ Clinton investigations leading to ‘likely indictment.’ “

A headline on Right Side Broadcasting’s home page tells readers that “FBI sources believe Clinton Foundation case moving towards ‘likely indictment.’ “

Uncorrected articles about a “likely” indictment in the Clinton Foundation case also can be found on the home pages of Breitbart, Western Journalism and Info wars, among others.

All these stories left out what Baier said Thursday, when he first walked back the story:

I think the housing bubble crash was the opportunity that Putin was looking for to begin a full court press on destabilizing the west, and ever since then working toward that goal has been the primary objective of just about every Russian government agency.

The *only* thing that has held any of this back was the Obama-led economic recovery and keeping the price of petroleum cratered. Even with these 2 things, look where we are now. Image if the Great Recession lasted longer and (in CA prices anyway) gas never went from $5/gal to $2/gal…

Where was this stuff hiding all these years.

Bruce Springsteen- If i was the priest

IF I WAS THE PRIEST {Transcribed and researched by springsteenlyrics.com}
Studio version

Well, there’s a light on yonder mountain
And it’s calling me to shine
There’s a girl over by the water fountain
And she’s asking to be mine
And ain’t that Jesus, he’s standing in the doorway
With a buckskin jacket, boots and spurs, so really fine
He says, “We need you up in Dodge City, son
‘Cause there’s, oh, so many bad boys trying to work the same line”

Well, now if Jesus was the sheriff and I was the priest
If my lady was an heiress and my Mama was a thief
Oh, and Papa rode shotgun for the Fargo line
There’s still too many bad boys trying to work the same line

Now old sweet Virgin Mary, she runs the Holy Grail saloon
Where for a nickel they’ll give you whiskey and a personally blessed balloon
And the Holy Ghost, he’s the host with the most, he runs the burlesque show
Where they let you in for free but, oh, hit you for your soul when you go
And Mary serves Mass on Sunday and then she sells her body on Monday to the boot maker who will pay the highest price
But he don’t know he got stuck with a loser, Mary’s a stone junkie, what’s more she’s a boozer
She’s only been made once or twice by some kind of magic

And, well, things ain’t been the same in heaven ever since big bad Bobby came to town
He’s been known to down eleven and then ask for another round
And me I got scabs on my knees from kneeling way too long
You gotta take a stand, be the man, up where you belong
And forget about the old friends and the old times
Because there’s just too many new boys trying to work the same line

Now if Jesus was the sheriff and I were the priest
If my lady was an heiress and my Mama was a thief
Oh, and Papa rode shotgun for the Fargo line
There’s still too many outlaws trying to work the same line

Now there’s a light on yonder mountain
And it’s calling me to shine
There’s a girl by the water fountain
And she’s asking to be mine
And Jesus, he’s standing in the doorway
With his six-guns drawn and ready to fan
He says, “We need you, son, up in Dodge City”
But I’m already overdue in Cheyenne

Sure the lyrics are a bit overblown but also cool. What do want for a hungry 22 yr old kid.

A union organizer at TSA is one of the most likely candidates to be targeted with the $1-a-year salary punishment the geniuses just resurrected.

I really don’t see how that rule survives a Bill of Attainder challenge.

re: #61 Khal Wimpo (no longer entitled to his own facts)

I just can’t get over the strange & uncharted waters we find ourselves in. For most of my youth, I watched as various members of my family joined the military to hold back the Russian menace to our way of life.

Some of those members never came back. Some came back … but not really.

I can relate. My grandparents on both sides of my family fought in WW2 (my paternal grandfather did not come back). My great-uncle was in the Navy (and was rescued when a destroyer was shot out from under him).

My parents were both in the Navy during the Cold War (and my father did not come back).

My sister was in the Army and I was in the Navy, also during the Cold War.

Now, it would seem that the minority-President-Elect wants to throw all that under the bus. Thanks, conservatives.

I was reading an article about a statement made by a former CIA director about how the intelligence community is rarely appreciated because much of what they do cannot be made public; a couple commentators wrote back saying they had called the CIA’s main desk at Langley, asking the person who answered the phone to pass along their appreciation for what the CIA does every day.

re: #184 makeitstop

I watched that stream for nearly 20 minutes. Probably the most pointlessly funny thing I’ve seen in a while.

While I was watching they decided to get married and have 7 kids, and the male thing got mad because the female thing didn’t know the names of the kids they planned to have. :)

The other day I had the Dan Patrick (Sports talk) Show on and Dan mentioned he got an Amazon Echo for Christmas.

He started calling out Alexa commands on air as did his four “Danettes” assistants.

A couple minutes later the show was getting emails, text messages and phone calls asking for him to stop because he was firing off listeners devices.

Modern problems.

Like I’ve said from day one. We have small kids. I’m not doing well at all. I’m trying to convince the inlaws that this is very very bad and to help us leave the country.

A lot of ppl (including my husband) seem to think something magical will happen and it wont be that bad. But I can’t have my kids grow up in Jim Crow 2.0

I do think there’s one lazy thing I think ppl in the West can do to stop the spread of fascism.

re: #93 MsJ

I work from home and if I never had to leave the house I’d be perfectly fine.

I had to go to the general store today, so I had to un-freeze one of my doors to get out of the house first. (Probably should have done that anyway, for fire safety and such.) Getting out isn’t something I do much.

I suppose that worked out okay, right after I got back from the store (and my mailbox) the village clerk came by with the agenda for next Monday’s meeting.

I told her I would not protest the water bill from our water break; it was about $20 higher than average. She thanked me for saving her a bunch of paperwork.

re: #203 HappyWarrior

By the way, I’m really getting frustrated with that element of the left who believes this is all a big ruse by the intelligence agency and “Neo-cons” to start a war with Russia. I’m just tired of that element of the left that thinks we should throw our government under the bus in favor of someone like Assenge who clearly doesn’t have our country’s interests at heart.

re: #204 HappyWarrior

And it was more than just the email hacking. It was the spreading of misinformation through fake news. And honestly, if your argument is “Well the US has interfered before too so we deserve it.” Fuck off, that’s a stupid argument. That’s like saying because we have killed civilians in combat before that we had no right to treat the Axis who delibartely targeted civilian populations as war criminals. I’m no America fuck yeah type but the America fuck no types are just as bad.

Damn Happy, I see those exact comments in those exact words on some forums I visit. So, it must be very common among the far left folks that are more pissed off that Bernie was screwed by the DNC and the emails proved it than Russia and Assange.

Once again…at the top of The Circle of Derp, just derping along are the wingnuts and moonbeams.

That will be good for a lot of people to see. Many in the far west do not believe this kind of thing is happening in real time.

Yeah we do. And a lot of people here voted specifically for it.

That rancher north of me still has his Nazi flag and Dixie Swastikas on his ranch entrance in Gordon. The village of Gordon has been unable to get him to remove them (or quit distributing white supremacist newspapers in town).

re: #187 I cannot.

What’s even more fun is when you discover not a screw or fastener, but a entirely different part that you swear wasn’t in the instructions, you check, and its still not there.

And you have no idea to this day what its purpose in existing is, other than to vex you.

In the military we called those “brother-in-law effect” parts.

I have a brother-in-law who owns a screw factory, and I can subcontract with him to throw him some Defense Department contracts for screws.
