Last year when I turned 60, I rode the Coast Starlight from LA to Oakland and back. NIce to have a roomette with concierge service. It was a truly enjoyable ride and the food was better than what I expected. On my bucket list is to ride the California Zephyr from Emeryville to Chicago and then take another train route back to LA .

Driving home from Tahoe today (Totally got rained out teleskiguy) I was listening to Shooter Jennings (Waylon & Jessie’s boy) show ‘Electric Rodeo’ (two hours of badass jams from Rock to Country, Jazz to Funky) and he went off on Julian Assange for a bit…said he was wondering if anyone had written a song for him…then found like twenty on the internet (and said that’s why the internet is fucked up, everyone and their fuckin’ mother can record a song and put it out there…not like the good ole days where you needed talent)…anyway, he listed the three worst Julian Assange songs and the second was actually a parody mocking Assange, only Shooter didn’t catch that…here it is…it’s some funny shit. One of our patrollers got taken for a ride yesterday. Threw four bombs along the ridge then dropped in and hugged a tree while he threw the fifth - crown came up the ridge above the tree he used as shelter and broke five feet deep. Took him for a ride down a ridge line with a net 350’ vertical drop past trees and over a couple of rocky edges. Deployed his airbag and stayed on top - only got a few bruises and some lost gear. Lucky to be alive. Saw him at the dispatch center today and said, “Good to see you, man.” and he said, “You know, it’s really good to see you too.”

Note to self: next time I wanna watch an opera I haven’t seen before, if it seems to start weird, like jumping into the middle of a story, rather than watch it through thinking this is kind of a shitty opera, look to see if there’s another disc of the whole first half stuck under the booklet in the DVD case.

We certainly had fun this summer on the Hudson Bay Railroad. My wife, train connoisseur, all her life wanted to take that trip. (Her family went on it when she was a child, but she was deemed too young. For years afterwards her brothers bragged about that trip.)

For the curious, I got to see Beach Blanket Babylon tonight, which was hysterical and featured any number of completely inappropriate jokes. It was great. :)

And then we came home because he pretty much had enough energy to get there and back and that was it. But at least we didn’t miss it!

Good read…”Snow Sense” and “Staying Alive” also listed on that link are two of the texts we use in our Avy 1 training classes. (we all have to have Avy 1 at our resort - I still need to take Avy 2 but I’m busy training new candidates this year).

Fun show…and they do a good job of keeping it current. Keep your eye out for the Capitol Steps - a musical political satire group…they’ll have some great new material in a few months I suspect.

I take avalanches very seriously. I’ve been to six funerals of avalanche victims in my day, including one of my best friends in Steamboat. His brother dug him out and it was too late.

Well she’s one of the authors of Snow Sense, so it makes sense. But the one I linked is definitely more of a personal memoir with enough of the science that, if you’re not actually trying to use it for evaluating avalanche danger but are just curious, you can learn a bunch without it being dry.

My paperback is actually signed by her, but not because I got to meet her, just because the bookstore had an extra after a visit she did that I somehow missed hearing about. I think I first read that book while recovering from having my appendix out.

That section he talks about in the article between Denver and Salt Lake City sounds like the most interesting part to me, and whaddya know, Denver is only two hundred miles from here.

My wife is already looking for tickets. Stopover in Salt Lake City to tour (we didn’t do that on our recent car trip) sounds interesting as well.

Did the Euro Rail pass in 2015 for a one-way trip from Stuttgart, Germany to Gdansk, Poland by sleeper car. It was most definitely worth the price, and a bunch cheaper than flying.

David Gilmour did a cover of this song, but this is the original by the band Unicorn. Gilmour produced Unicorn’s two albums after he saw them play at a wedding reception. The album sounds tons better than the sound in this YouTube.

The Amtrak Website seems like it was designed by the lowest bidder.

Trying to figure out when a train even runs from A to B is difficult: It would seem to me that if you picked a date and there was no train that day, it could offer up alternative days near that date but noooo - it’s been like that for years.

The easiest way I’ve found to make a reservation is to skip the Website altogether and simply call Amtrak.

The presenter is the always amusing to watch Kenneth Hari, with whom some may be familiar from this TTC courses.

What I notice most, though, is how narrow the scope of the lecture. Nothing about east Asia, which is typical of Americans. It’s as if that part of the world just doesn’t exist. Nothing on the America, too, which is understandable given the absence of written records, but the Mayans did have a writing system and some of it is deciphered.

As enjoyable as Hari’s presentation is I come away from it with the feeling that once again we are seeing the biases of “the West”, in so far as the scope of humanity. For sure the development of towns, writing, and then kingdoms of the ancient Near East and Mediterranean directly influence our society today (we are in some significant part an extension of Roman civilization), yet the world is still bigger than that.

The recent election saw yet another successful manipulation of the rural population based on resentment of the more urban, and wealthier, regions.

I’ve seen at times in my Facebook feed posts by people from the country trying to dump on California or urban areas… for no real reason other than their personal resentment (which the posters never own.)

The bottom line of human life the past 10k years is that we’ve congregated into every larger communities, which brings complexity and thus new problems, but the advantages outweigh the problems, which is why we still do it.

With people come “wealth” and all the more so when the population organizes around win-win scenarios of labor division.

It’s a discussion which is mostly absent from the talking head shows on cable news, perhaps because the discussion would take longer than a 15 second sound bite.

I think we need to take to heart Snyder’s assertion that history does not even rhyme, much less repeat.

We will not be the Germany of 1930. But what we can learn from the 20th century is how nation states can go down a destructive path quickly.

I still maintain that what we are seeing is an outworking of the collapse of the old, religious, worldview that has been so deeply embedded in America since the first religious pilgrims came here. The wave of “great awakenings” in this country caused large wakes of religiosity to be part of the fabric of our society.

When I look on my Facebook feed at the most ardent anti-Clinton, pro-Trump supporters, they are all religious fundamentalists.

It seems many of the educated elite find it queer that a sinner as great as Trump could be so adored by the church-going middle-America, but it’s not really that weird.

Religion serves as a way to provide meaning to one’s very temporary existence, and if we look at the voting patterns we see that Trump did especially well with the older generation.

The myth that America was “great” but somehow was not so under Obama (and would be even worse off under Clinton) resonated with the populations of the Old Northwest now known as the Rust Belt.

We’ve touched on revanchism here before, way back in 2008/2009.

What is sometimes overlooked is how in America this revanchism has to also embrace the deep religiosity to which I referred above.

This Trump recognized right away, which is why he put on the I’m-a-Christian-too charade.

For many of Trump’s supporters, it wasn’t just about Make America Great Again, but about Make My Religion Great Again.

Which is why in my Facebook feed I see the pro-Trump supporters also pushing the idea that we need a new Crusade against Muslims (yes, really.)

American fascism is/will-be different than German fascism or Italian fascism (though it’s more like the latter than the former.) A few years back I brought up Brazilian fascism as something to study, because I think it shows us how the society can turn towards fascism but not really duplicate what happened in Germany.

What Snyder is warning us against is falling into an either-or trap (i.e., there are only two models of our reality: 1) the progressive arc of history (very Obama-esque), or 2) the eternal now (absent of a past, e.g., Brietbart.))

Rather, reality is about people doing specific actions in specific locales, the “moments” about which Snyder spoker.

What we are seeing in American society today is a very stark divergence of the idea of America, between us urban elites and those in the Rust Belt, Appalachia, and the Plains states.

For example, I believe in higher taxes, granting citizenship to long-time residents (regardless of how they entered), and ultimately an acceptance that we are very highly dependent upon each other (which means we also have to give up the idea of being self-reliant), and that religion which is practiced through a fundamentalist funnel is not going to work anymore.

I’m afraid the Rust Belt folk fell for the strong-man gimmick because they are simply afraid of being left behind, of there not being the glory days of the industrial revolution anymore. Brokenness brings desperation, and that is also why Trump played on the drug-addiction card so much.

But more deeply, I believe that the concepts which are reified in their communities, where activities are often poured through the ceremonies of a fundamentalist-originated Christianity, can not be reckoned with our society today, where an American may very well be a Muslim, or more horrifyingly, an atheist.

And that is why abortion is the keystone to understanding what is happening today.

I accept that I am a collection of cells. The religious right, and some large share of Americans, believe we are magical beings, “souls”, that somehow get inserted into fertilized eggs.

The rejection of the magic is too much for a significant fraction of America.

What Trump communicated expertly (and he is an expert in at least one thing - manipulative communication), to America, is that they can keep their magic. He won’t challenge them on that, unlike Obama, who (rightly) believed Americans are still clinging to their Bibles.

I’ve never seen an “extreme” avalanche forecast in Colorado. It’s quite rare to even see “high” forecasts. Anybody backcountry skiing in the Sierra Nevada mountains today are sure candidates for a Darwin Award. Yikes!

It is Sirota.

I think this one’s pretty easy to interpret. Think Progress used to criticize Bush. Legum could have said we haven’t had a president this dishonest since Bush and it would have been fine.

I used to be blocked by Sirota because I criticized him over Greenwald. But some of his stuff I agree with, so I sent him an email saying just because I thought his buddy GG was a douchebag wasn’t worth blocking me, and he unblocked me.

Running on Fumes: Pandemonium at Mexico’s Gas Pumps

Through the week, roads across Mexico were blocked by protesters and burning tires, thousands of businesses were ransacked, upward of 1500 people—among them, police officers— were arrested, and at least five people were killed as furious citizens took to the streets following the more than 20 percent price gas hike.

The Mexican government has for years maintained artificially low gas prices in Mexico thanks to massive subsidies that are absorbed by the state, but as of this year that all changes. The cost of fuel will finally be adjusted to conform to real market value. The surge in gas prices is the just first major sign of changes to come, but certainly the most tangible so far.

Expect more of this as Trump turns the screws on the Mexican economy.

He was 82, had been retired for a few years, and was basically a surviving icon for the moderates. He had stopped being active politically after he was DQ’d in 2013 from running again. Reports say it was a heart attack.

Well folks, Target here. The good news is that the city of Virginia Beach has succeeded in turning the streets from snow-clogged messes into slush-filled ones, so commerce has resumed…even though mass transit has not. The hotel has mostly emptied, leaving only those of us poor souls unwilling to brave the streets just to go home for a few hours between work shifts. So now our own enemy is boredom, which may lead to mutiny if not alleviated in the near future.
