UK Intelligence Officials Vouch for Credibility of Trump “Golden Showers” Dossier

“Not the sort of person who will simply pass on gossip”
Politics • Views: 48,202

Donald Trump compared it to Nazi propaganda, and called it “fake news,” but the Guardian reports today that UK intelligence officials are coming forward to vouch for the credibility of Christopher Steele, author of the now-infamous Trump “Golden Showers” dossier.

At his press briefing on Wednesday, the president-elect dared the world’s media to scrutinise the 35 pages of claims, before throwing down a challenge – where’s the proof? Nobody had any. Case closed.

But in the rush to trample all over the dossier and its contents, one key question remained. Why had America’s intelligence agencies felt it necessary to provide a compendium of the claims to Barack Obama and Trump himself?

And the answer to that lies in the credibility of its apparent author, the ex-MI6 officer Christopher Steele the quality of the sources he has and the quality of the people prepared to vouch for him.

On Thursday night, as the former spy was in hiding, having fled his home in the south-east of England, former colleagues rallied to defend him. One described him as “very credible” – a sober, cautious and meticulous professional with a formidable record.

The former Foreign Office official who has known Steele for 25 years and considers him a friend said: “The idea his work is fake or a cowboy operation is false, completely untrue. Chris is an experienced and highly regarded professional. He’s not the sort of person who will simply pass on gossip.”

Trump’s statement that the release of this report is somehow like Nazi propaganda is an extremely odd statement.

It suggests that Trump sees himself as persecuted like the Jews of Nazi Germany. It makes me wonder if Trump has delusions similar to modern American fundamentalist Christians about being God’s new chosen people. However, I haven’t noticed much other evidence of that delusion exhibited by him.

Someone (I forget who) said that Trump is like an antisemite’s idea of Jew. Maybe there is something to this.

So our president-elect is now combating not only with domestic intelligence services, but also foreign ones as well. As was noted yesterday by CNN, how in the holy fuck does he think this is a good idea? He’s going to need to rely upon these people when he inevitably begins his little crusade against Islam, so how does he expect to get people to believe him when he’s saying that the very CIA he’s presently slagging is reporting a “dire threat” from whichever country he wants to go to war with by year’s end?

I don’t think it’s odd at all. It’s his “no, you!” retort that he always uses. He knows full well about his Nazi supporters and how often they are called out and ties tightly to him. He HAS to throw that back somehow. He can’t control himself. In any manner.

Except that Mattis couldn’t remember that Tel Aviv is the capital of Israel earlier today.

No, he refused to say Jerusalem is the capital. He flat out said Tel Aviv is the capital:

President-elect Donald Trump’s Defense Secretary nominee, James Mattis, was asked on Thursday what the capital of Israel is. And he didn’t say Jerusalem.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) asked about Israel during the hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, but Mattis refused to give him the answer he wanted.

“The capital of Israel that I go to, sir, is Tel Aviv, because that’s where all their government people are,” Mattis replied.

“Do you agree with me that the capital of Israel is Jerusalem?” asked Graham.

“Sir, right now, I stick with the U.S. policy,” said Mattis.

“Okay, do you support moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem?”

“I would defer to the nominee for Secretary of State on that, sir.”

There’s this self-defeating branch of intellectual thinking that says any attack on Trump must be 100% air-tight, that anything less only “helps” him by discrediting those waging the attacks.

The problem with this branch of thinking is that there’s never going to be such attacks, there’s always going to be a sliver of doubt that Trump and his sycophants are going to lean on in their efforts to discredit any attack on him.

If there’s one thing Trump has done well, it’s get “intellectuals” to reflexively doubt the claims because of Dubya’s years turning the intel community into a patsy for his foreign adventurism.

Middle America does not have a monopoly on tough times. There are a lot of people living in cities and elsewhere who have it just as rough, if not worse. And guess what? No one seems to give a shit. In fact, the GOP just orchestrated a whole campaign to disenfranchise a lot these voters, so you’ll pardon me if I save my empathy for the people who are actually screwed now, instead of the voters who did the screwing. I’d rather not waste my time trying to psychoanalyze why so many people were captivated by a political message rooted in pure hate. There’s no time for that. I’m going to fight instead.

Heh - all those people talking about how the markets will soar with Trump are suddenly hitting the reality reset button. Reality is that no one knows what Trump’s economic policies are going to do, and what little we do know is likely to be disruptive to markets that pride themselves on stability.

In other words, the irrational exuberance of November to Christmas has been replaced by the sober realization that Trump’s about to make things very messy as we head into earnings season.

I assume you’re talking about JFK, which would mean considering things in context. Would his various medical maladies killed him outright? Probably not, short of an overdose on whatever painkillers they were pumping him up with to keep on his feet. But the stress of the job is well known and usually comes bearing down on a president most if they can win a second term, as they have to move from proving their worth to securing a lasting legacy. Considering all the shit that was prepared to go down in a hypothetical second Kennedy term, it’s likely one or more of his medical issues would have been made public and that would have been the end of it.

Yep, JFK.

Though, looking at some of his proposals before he died, I think we missed out on some good stuff.

A lot of Kennedy’s ideas ended up being passed as LBJ’s “Great Society,” passed in large part because Johnson had the political skills to move Congress along. Kennedy was in a lot of ways like Obama was when he first took office: young, charismatic, and full of hope. The former was just cut down so suddenly that we never got to see all of that crushed under the reality of partisan politics.

This is really an example of how well the GOP has worked over the years to turn people against each other for having the slightest bit of success. “Your premiums are going to pay for that guy’s healthcare.” No shit, Sherlock, that’s how the system has worked since the first time somebody came up with the idea of insurance. It’s the very bedrock upon which the entire system works. But leave it to the GOP, who tried to spin themselves as the advocates of the “common man” when they’re up in to their eyeballs with the insurance industry, to convince people that that very system is somehow a form of “charity.”

klys (maker of Silmarils)  Jan 12, 2017 • 2:42:44pm

re: #113 Backwoods_Sleuth

I mean that is the whole concept of insurance. And what makes medical insurance different from things like auto or house insurance is that, in general, people don’t make a lot of claims on those. Not compared to medical insurance, where pretty much everyone IS going to make a claim at some point. And because medical advances keep happening, we can keep people alive longer - but that costs money. A lot of money, in a lot of cases.

So of course, from a logic perspective, you need to have the people in the system who are going to place less demand on it in order to even out the costs, or else that premium is going to spiral even higher. Because you can have a lower premium when only 10% of the folks paying for it need to get some kind of payout. (Note here: all numbers pulled out of my ass for example purposes only.) But when the folks who need reimbursement approach 50%, it’s suddenly a lot harder for the premiums to cover the outlay.

At best, forcing healthy folks to carry insurance (which, let’s be real, they should be doing anyway because otherwise your option is probably medical bankruptcy when your appendix needs to come out, have fun!) is a stop-gap measure that reduces the rate of that increase by spreading out the burden over a larger group.

I really think at some point we as a country need to come to terms with the fact that health insurance is fundamentally different from other types of insurance and can’t be treated in the same way. In the past, we could get away with it, but the situation is becoming increasingly untenable and the only reason we’ve been able to put this discussion off for so long is because the LARGEST possible drain on the insurance industry …isn’t on the private market. (Thanks Medicare! I’d really like you to stick around until I’m old enough!)

Of course, this is too much nuance for most Americans, let alone Twitter.

Two things. First, this award to Vice President Biden was absolutely 100% deserved, because he has gone above and beyond in his service to our country.
Second, I really wonder how they were able to keep Joe from finding out about his getting the award. He had absolutely no idea whatsoever that President Obama was awarding him the Medal of Freedom.

Also one aside observation - I think that this might be the only time in my lifetime that the President and Vice President have as deep of a friendship as Obama and Biden have had these last eight years - I can’t think of any during the last half century that even come close. Above anything else, this might be one of the things I will miss the most come January 20.

I’ve never seen anything like it. Bush-Quayle from the little I know of it seemed strictly political, Clinton and Gote got along but I got the sense it was more professional then personal, same with Cheney and Bush. Obama and Biden as said seem to have a genuine bond. We couldn’t have asked for a better VP than Biden the past eight years.

The same people who buy into “all insurance is the same” are the same morons who generally buy into “the federal budget is just like your household budget,” simplistic cretins who want the world made easy enough for them to understand. Especially we all know or have heard of someone who spent years paying his premiums religiously, maintained a perfect driving record for decades…and then filed one claim and was immediately dropped from his policy. The difference is when you have your car insurance canceled, it’s not the end of your life. When your health insurance is canceled, it very well can be.

Anti black “race riot” pogroms rarely (or never) had a body count anywhere near that high in the 20th century. I would not expect to see anything like that without a firebomb or some such being used on a place of worship. The police, for all their faults, simply no longer let mass murder in the streets go unchecked in this day and age.

I always thought wet foot was unfair. It’s not as if Cuba is the only tyranny immigrants face peril fleeing. I expect the Cubs lobby to throw a gasket over this but I just don’t care. I know a lot of Cubans had to flee their homes but I hate their representatives like Rubio and Cruz acting like Cuba was unique.

What I want to ask them is why Cubans deserve refuge, but Syrians don’t. I mean it’s not like Raul Castro is bombing his own people, right? So it can’t be degree of suffering or risk of death. So why, Marco?

I am seriously dumbfounded at the number of people who didn’t/don’t know Obamacare = ACA. Is this all coming from FOX? Have they praised ACA or made such a false distinction to make it acceptable to their viewers while continuing to hang them with their hate for Obama?

Just typing that made my head hurt.

There are some people who are going to hate anything and everything that Obama (or any Democratic president for that matter) was or is attached to. It started with the “Obamaphones” - even if you explained that the service was created under Reagan to help people in rural areas, and expanded under GW Bush to include cellphones, it didn’t matter, it had Obama’s name on it, so therefore it was socialism writ large. Same thing happened with the ACA - doesn’t matter that the Republicans proposed the exact same plan in the ’90s, it had Obama’s name on it, therefore it was socialism writ larger

There are a couple additional big differences between health insurance and other types of insurance: 1. The variability of costs is much greater; it’s not the frequency of use but the fact that the costs associated with serious health problems are so great that you may need 10,000 healthy consumers to support the one consumer with major needs.
2. The health needs of an individual are independent of their wealth. Most insurance is correlated with income — more expensive homes, life insurance etc. This is the one insurance that has little to do with wealth; in fact, the need is inversely related to wealth. Those with inadequate means generally cannot afford as healthy a lifestyle,

And a lot of these are issues that have evolved as our medical knowledge has advanced. The difference in outcomes used to be such that sure, the wealthy could spend more money for more care, but all that got them was a slightly better probability. Now it literally is the difference between life and death. Same on costs - I suspect the spread used to be a lot smaller.

It used to be we could treat medical insurance more like we did the other types, but that’s not the case anymore because of issues like these.

Article referenced in the piece.

Love Is Not the Answer

The trope of the magical negro often includes an endless well for understanding and forgiveness on the part of black people until their white oppressors finally comes around (see: Driving Miss Daisy-The Help), wherein black people must bear the burden of our abuse and the weight of forgiveness as the white conscience is allowed to float about freely.

The efforts of (Van) Jones and other are both noble and ahistorical. The rights of the minority have never been granted simply because the majority finally came around and changed its mind. Racism and bigotry are not the result of unfriendliness nor will they be undone by the opposite. We must ask if changing the minds of the few who are both reachable and open is the best use of our energy during a time that demands so much of it.

Jones and others can rise up with their Love Armies and their op-eds and cupcakes and continue to have fruitless conversations with people who would applaud and defend any cop who shot them dead in the street. But you don’t have to love your oppressor or those who would sleep just fine at night with full knowledge of your oppression.

I personally believe that if we’re going to have wet food, it should be for every group. I can understand why this is a personal issue to you though.

The Tulsa Race Riots (started by whites because blacks had the audacity to make money) only killed three hundred, but their entire section of the city was burned to the ground.

HappyWarrior  Jan 12, 2017 • 3:32:37pm

Also gotta add that I was rubbed the wrong way when some people tried to shame the Bush daughters for the underaged drinking. Was it immature? Sure but was it also behavior that most people engage in when they’re young and away from home? Sure too. It’s not like Jenna and Barbara are mean and bigoted people. Much respect for them than Meaghan McCain honestly, Palin’s oldest children, the Romney boys, and of course the Trump kin outside Tiff and Barron.

Tulsa was the real big one. There was Chicago in 1919 I think, and Rosewood in 1923. Neither event had massive body count (in the low dozens) , although both (especially Rosewood) had significant property damage. Racial motivated deaths over the last 150 years tended to be masses of relatively small numbers that added up and up and up….

re: #28 EPR-radar

It’s important to remember that the least objectionable Republican is a heartless SOB. Most of them add further issues, such as bigotry, science denial etc., etc.

But that heartless SOB Republican baseline is already a big problem. These are people whose honest book review of A Christmas Carol would run something like this:

This story is a tragedy. It opens with our hero, Ebenezer Scrooge, going about his lawful, lucrative and Godly business. Unfortunately, Scrooge is subjected to Communist indoctrination by the Ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, abetted by their useful idiot (Marley’s ghost). This psychological torture succeeds, and at the end of the story Scrooge has saddled himself with supporting several useless takers, the most obnoxious of which is Tiny Tim.

Son of the Morning Star:
A corrupt and incompetent federal government orders the heroic Colonel Custer to round up a large gang of dark-skinned thugs who have skipped out of public housing and gone on a rampage to reclaim their former turf. Unfortunately, Custer’s force includes large numbers of recent immigrants, many of whom come from barbarous areas of Europe where strict gun control is enforced, and who therefore have only rudimentary shooting skills. Custer locates the gang, which unfortunately turns out to be larger than expected. He and many of his men fight bravely but die a martyr’s death on behalf of property rights and the sacred principles of law and order.

My opinion of Evangelicals is exceptionally low.

So is mine, but it’s not a question of character, it’s a question of commitment and exertion. A big chunk of the worst of the Evangelicals are too damn lazy and comfortable to be killing people in the street. That’s way too much effort when they can just sit on their sofa watching Fox and yelling slurs whenever Obama shows up.

6000 jailed and 800 hospitalized as well.

I’ve watched several of Timothy Snyder’s videos. Of particular interest was his notion that the One Thing that was the biggest factor in mortality rates for Jews in Europe during WW2 was how consistently or inconsistentlly they were considered to be members of a nation-state —a formality/convention under which citizens enjoy certain measures of protection by default. THIS has direct lessons for ALL the immigration/refugee issues now under consideration, everywhere. And it speaks of the worst aspects of “security” measures like the Patriot Act.

There was also Colfax in 1873, where over every single African-American man, woman, and child - estimated at close to 200 people - was systematically murdered because one person dared fight back against racial violence.

There was a memorial put up to signify this event, that stands to this very day.

It honors the murderers.

Totally non-racist.

I’m sorry to read that some people live in fear of of their lives from Evangelicals.

I live in the middle of crazy Evangelical land: my county (population around 14,000) boasts more than 100 churches (one Catholic that offers Masses by a visiting priest once a month), less than a half dozen Methodist, the rest some sort of Pentecostal variation (including speaking in tongues and rolling around on the floor) or non-denominational (lots of them are in it for the tax benefits).

Funny thing, though…way more than half of the county’s residents don’t identify with ANY religion. And those of us in that group KNOW the pious Evangelicals: we KNOW who is sleeping around, we KNOW whose children’s paternity is somewhat (shall we say) “suspect” (looking at you Kim Davis and all of your husbands), we KNOW where you are and what you are doing the rest of the week when you’re not in church on Wednesday nights and Sundays.

And they all know that WE know that.

Evangelicals here can pretend to be all outraged Bertha-Better-Than-You hereabouts, but they know that we know every damned bit of their hypocrisy. And if we know, they damned sure know their God does, too.

And there’s not a thing they are going to do to anyone in terms of violence other than shout and get all red in the face.

If there is violence targeting Muslims, it will be from a Dylan Roof type loner, who has been indoctrinated by Fox news or Breitbart or other anti-Muslim sites. With the weaponry available to the average citizen, there could be many casualties. But I am hoping that we are better than that.

Most of us are. It doesn’t take that many who aren’t.

re: #165 Ziggy_TARDIS

My opinion of Evangelicals is exceptionally low.

I will drop the number to 300 though. Having met Wahhabis and Evangelicals, I can say that they are practically the same. That’s why I am concerned about violence. From them.

1 Evangelicals, unlike Wahhabis, are generally located in countries with functioning governments and law enforcement. They’d be caught, they’d face consequences, they know this and it restrains them from acting on their worst impulses.

2 Evangelicals, unlike Wahhabis, are generally located in countries where they can publish books, have radio and TV shows, run candidates, and get the state legislature to enact — maybe not their worst impulses, but their 2nd or 3rd worst impulses. At no risk to themselves.

These are the reasons that Brian Fisher and Tony Perkins and Mike Huckabee are not and will never be Al-Baghdadi.

The official Louisiana State placard that was erected in the late 1950s stood until less than 10 years ago - it was removed when the city courthouse underwent a complete teardown and rebuild. It wasn’t much better - “carpetbag misrule” that is cited here is what the rest of the country called the post- Civil War Reconstruction.

We’ve already seen this pattern play out in the abortion wars, where the clearest example is Bill O’Reilly repeatedly inciting murder from his perch as a Fox commenter. This message was eventually acted on in the murder of Dr. Tiller. The taint from something like that runs deep, and extends well past O’Reilly to anyone who willfully pretends that he didn’t engage in stochastic terrorism.

As I think about this, though - it’s yet another example of white privilege, or you could call it white Christian privilege: we’re not required to march in opposition to mass shootings by white people to prove we’re not on their side. And when someone like Dylann Roof shoots 9 black people in a church, people don’t say, “We need to monitor these white communities. People are being radicalized. The community knows who they are, believe me.”

Nobody seems to know what Rudy Giuliani’s cybersecurity firm actually does

Giuliani spent much of his time consulting after leaving office as mayor of New York at the end of 2001. His venture claims to offer “a comprehensive range of security and crisis management services.” His consulting firm has hired controversial staffers, and has worked for questionable clientele, reports have said.

Yet, even his cybersecurity venture’s website, filled with clunky Flash components and “cyber” stock imagery throughout, doesn’t advertise what it does.

I somewhat disagree with this assessment.

Even though the top leadership of the evangelical community won’t commit acts of violence, they do encourage other like-minded members to do so.

Case in point - Eric Rudolph (1996 Olympic Park bomber, also committed multiple other terrorist acts against gays and family-planning groups). He stayed at large until 2005 - almost ten years - because of a network of evangelical groups providing shelter and funding that significantly delayed his capture. There is still a movement to have him released from his Supermax imprisonment.

He isn’t the only one whose actions are supported by evangelists - Scott Roeder, who murdered George Tiller is actively recruiting followers from his prison cell, and several religious organizations like Perkins’ FRC distribute those materials, including his manifesto.

As I saw noted at Fark (of all places) yesterday, while all the detractors and skeptics are attacking the dossier on a number of grounds, one seems to be getting little attention: Nobody is actually arguing that Trump would not engage in such actions. There is nobody other than Trump himself who has tried to argue that hiring prostitutes to piss on a mattress that Obama once slept on is so out of character for Trump as to be impossible. Which says that even his supporters realize the man is so petty and egotistical that he would stoop to such behavior.

Okay, you don’t but Zig certainly has viewed them like enemies in the past. And fwiw Bush I isn’t an Evangelical Christian. Doesn’t make his bigoted and stupid statement better but since you’re using it to shape your perception of Evangelicals. As I said I’m no fan of them either but I still ultimately do believe in treating people as individuals. You bring up their hostility towards African Americans, one can just as easily cite the role of northern Evangelicals in the abolition movement and believe me as someone from a Catholic family, I’m well aware of their intolerant history to them. My point is why should you be able to judge someone for their group and not be wrong but someone who does the same to Muslims and non believers isn’t. I rather think we’re all too focused on the wrong metrics. We’re used to measuring the damage of a scandal like this by how many are willing to stand with the politician at the center versus who is running for cover. A better metric might be to look at the fact that Trump was barely at 50% approval on Election Night and has been falling ever since. Millions of folks who voted for him on the “I don’t know why I hate Hillary but I do” argument are abandoning him now that they realize he’s a walking dumpster fire.

The party’s not visibly breaking ranks with Trump, but they are beginning to feel the heat and its showing in Congress. While Senator Turtle is making a lot of noise about pushing through nominees without delay, the rank and file are holding their feet to the fire. It may be for show or it may be out of actual conviction, but the fact that hearings are being moved back and tough questions are being asked should be taken as a sign that even the GOP sees long-term problems with a Trump presidency that they don’t want to be associated with.

In a way, that’s almost worse to me, because they’ll puff up their chests (think Rubio and Graham), get a little good press, but in the end will vote exactly along party lines. Then they’ll whine, “Well, we asked tough questions and they answered them” so it’s all good. As long as they (the legislative Republicans) get to do what they want, they don’t really give a crap who’s in the cabinet and/or how much damage they’ll do. MOO/YMMV

The Bible consists solely of the OT, a few miracles by Jesus from the Gospels, Acts, the Epistles, and Revelation. The Gospels say things like ‘Blessed are the meek’, and ‘love your neighbor as yourself’ and that camel and the eye of a needle stuff. All that stuff that makes Jesus out to be some kinda hippy, instead of the asskicking, gay-hating, hippy-stomper they imagine him to be.

re: #219 unproven innocence

I’ve watched several of Timothy Snyder’s videos. Of particular interest was his notion that the One Thing that was the biggest factor in mortality rates for Jews in Europe during WW2 was how consistently or inconsistentlly they were considered to be members of a nation-state —a formality/convention under which citizens enjoy certain measures of protection by default. THIS has direct lessons for ALL the immigration/refugee issues now under consideration, everywhere. And it speaks of the worst aspects of “security” measures like the Patriot Act.

Yeah, I don’t think people understand that the death camps were mostly located in the essentially lawless zone of Poland (though millions were also killed by gun in the lawlessness created by war before the camps were created). As Dr. Snyder made clear: the Germans were people of law and order. Can’t have that kind of thing happen too much on home turf.

In light of some of the discussion above.

I think it need be said there is a line to designate where some “religions” become cults.

Pretty good list of them…but notable were people like David Koresh and the Branch Davidians and the famous Waco People’s Temple and the Feds, Jeffrey Lundgren and the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who killed a family from their own “religion” in Kirtland Ohio.

They all thought they were involved in a religion, even following a savior. But that was a “religion” that got totally distorted and led to killings.

And now that I bring up “cult” wouldn’t the term also be usable for defining a group like ISIS? Just like my examples…it is a distortion of a religion that turns into something far from that religion. I don’t think I have ever seen the words associated. Maybe people would get their heads around not having to say “radical Islamic terrorists” and just say a murderous cult and take it out of religion.

“Salad”. That’s one of those things they call a ‘salad’ that makes you think it’s healthy or something, when it’s really not, like Potato Salad, or Macaroni Salad.

“Hey, let’s take something starchy, and cover it with a bunch of mayonnaise!”

“God, I’d eat that all day! But all the starch! All the fat! People will realize it’s not healthy!”

Haven’t done it in like… okay a REAL long time but… let your cheese soften and allow the jello to stiffen but not be entirely “done”. Whip ‘em up together with a hand mixer (stick blender would probly work fine) adding a little cheese at a time so you don’t gum up the mixer blades. Add some crushed pineapple and/or other fruit and put it in a mold. Fridge to set.

I believe Trump was elected because of a failure of the imagination. Nobody could imagine someone so transparently, blatantly, continually dishonest becoming popular. Nobody could imagine him surviving insulting a former POW. Nobody could imagine a serial adulterer who followed no real Conservative ideology becoming popular with the Religious Right. Nobody could imagine he’d survive attacking a Gold Star family. Nobody could imagine he’d survive the release of the ‘pussy grabbing’ video and the accusations that followed it.

Nobody could imagine he’d be elected President, outside of a bad joke or a Simpsons episode.

But he did.

Now, Chris Hayes can’t imagine that what’s in the infamous Oppo dossier could be true.

What I learned in the election is that Everything I Know Is Wrong. I no longer allow myself to think, “Nah, that couldn’t be!”, when it comes to Trump.

Nothing like nice hot doughnuts after church…$1.50 a dozen in the church basement.

re: #255 Don’t Blame Me, I Voted for Kodos

The Colfax massacre, or Colfax riot as the events are termed on the 1950 state historic marker, occurred on Easter Sunday, April 13, 1873, in Colfax, Louisiana, the seat of Grant Parish, during confrontation between opposing political forces of the Republicans and Democrats.

In the wake of the contested 1872 election for governor of Louisiana and local offices, a group of white Democrats, armed with rifles and a small cannon, overpowered Republican freedmen and state militia (also black) trying to protect the Grant Parish courthouse in Colfax;[1][2] white Republican officeholders were not attacked. Most of the freedmen were killed after they surrendered; nearly 50 were killed later that night after being held as prisoners for several hours. Estimates of the number of dead have varied, ranging from 62 to 153; three whites died but the number of black victims was difficult to determine because bodies had been thrown into the river or removed for burial. There were rumors of mass graves at the site.

Historian Eric Foner described the massacre as the worst instance of racial violence during Reconstruction.[1] In Louisiana, it had the highest fatalities of any of the numerous violent events following the disputed gubernatorial contest in 1872 between Republicans and Democrats. Foner wrote, “…every election [in Louisiana] between 1868 and 1876 was marked by rampant violence and pervasive fraud.”[3] Although the Fusionist-dominated state “returning board,” which ruled on vote validity, initially declared John McEnery and his Democratic slate the winners, the board eventually split, with a faction declaring Republican William P. Kellogg the victor. A Republican federal judge in New Orleans ruled that the Republican-majority legislature be seated. en.wikipedia.org

True. However, it was also true that no attempts were made to bring any criminal charges vs. bankers, leading to the absurd result that (IIRC) the W Bush administration had more criminal cases vs. bankers than the Obama administration.

If Republican obstruction is inevitable, it has to be made visible so that there’s a chance of being able to place blame on the Republicans going forward.

Hammering away at the fact that Trump’s support is limited and decreasing is a good thing. At a minimum, it may help persuade the Dems in Congress not to compromise — last night’s Senate vote being unanimous is excellent (even though winning is better). Keep taking baby steps …

Republicans have no interest in investigating ties between Russia and the Trump campaign.

Mr. Burr dismissed calls for a new committee that would be able to probe possible contacts between Russians and Mr. Trump’s campaign because, he said, no one has been able to corroborate information in a dossier that said Russian government operatives had engaged in an extensive conspiracy with advisers to the president-elect’s campaign.
“The only accusations that there were contacts were in a document that the media has had for over three months,” Mr. Burr said. “If you believe that that document is important, then prove it. Until there’s proof out there that there was contact, this is speculation.”

We were in the courtyard of their place grilling. My sister got all excited, “Charlie, you get to feel an earthquake! Stand up, right now!” By that time she’d been living in the Bay Area six years.

Sure enough, the ground was shaking ever so slightly. I remember thinking “she made me stand up for that?”

Outside of the black guy/cop exchange… I find the woman’s story, the one who called 911, to be the most interesting part of this and one really worthy of discussion. I doubt her call was racially motivated (though not denying that it may have played some role). She saw a guy who appeared to be trying to break into a car - he was doing something to it. What would any of us do? What’s the right thing?

For a woman alone to stop and ask, “hey, is that your car?” and invite a confrontation with a strange man who might already be committing a crime? No. Just no.

IMO, she did the right thing though very aware of the consequences of possibly fucking that guy up, thus the apology along with the report. The cops alone are responsible for their assault on the man.

I’m sure you already know this, but that’s a 3 on the Japanese intensity scale. It is not the same as “magnitude” as you see reported in Western media.

Out downtown about a year ago, we saw a fight break out on the street. I called 911 in that situation, as you do, but there was definitely a voice in the back of my head that questioned whether that was 100% the right course of action, since one of the participants was black.

Thankfully there was no excessive force used. (It’s really stupid, as a side note, to fight a block and a half away from the police station.)

Okay, lots of people did. That doesn’t mean they’re qualified to be HUD Secretary. Carson did overcome his situation and by most accounts I’ve read became a successful neurosurgeon. And that’s what he should have stayed as until his retirement. He’s not a bureaucratic administrator. The past four HUD secretaries and I am including Bushes all had some sort of professional experience involving housing. Carson doesn’t have that. It’s beyond insulting to suggest that just because Carson grew up poor that somehow he’s qualified for this spot.

When I was but a wee, fresh-faced lass in my early 20s I had an unfortunate encounter at a 3-way stop. A couple of us reached the intersection at the same time. In my drivers’ ed, the one on the right had the right-of-way, so I just stopped, and went on thru. The other driver seemed to have other ideas and got really pissed, honking and screaming out the window. Did some ugly road rage shit up the street and scared the crap outa me. I didn’t want to go to my apartment, fearing being followed, so I just drove right into the open bay of the fire station across the street from my apartment complex.

A couple of (very cute) firefighters looked at me with stunned expression. I explained my strange behavior, and sure enough the car giving me problems did pass back and forth a couple of times giving my story credibility. They insisted I wait it out there, invited me to lunch, and became good buddies. I used to take them cookies and stuff. LOL

Why I love the SPLC, exhibit #555555, in response to Carson idiotically saying LGBT Americans don’t deserve “extra rights.”
States where you can be fired for your sexual orientation: 27
States where you can be fired for your gender identity: 28
States where you can be evicted or denied housing for your sexual orientation or gender identity: 28
Are these the “extra rights” Ben Carson is talking about?
That’s over half the states in this country where you can be fired, denied, or lose your job and or housing over your sexual orientation or gender identity. It’s always amused me when right wing Christians say that LGBT people want special rights. Uh, no they want equal rights. As a straight male, I can’t lose my job or be denied housing because of my identity. LGBT people have every right to expect the same protection under the law and for the last eight years we’ve had an administration that agrees with that but we won’t the next four.

And let me say again that there are rights in this country that should always be federally protected. We need to get out of this “states rights” mentality. Should a state have its own say in how it wants to spend their tax dollars or do its educational system? Sure, I can get behind that but when it comes to people’s rights, those need to be federally protected rights. We should know better after the Civil Rights movement to make a person’s rights up to the hands of a state legislature.

Take it easy but my message was really aimed at Ziggy who has been making generalized statements long before you joined lgf.

You are correct that President Geo. HW Bush is not an Evangelical Christian, he is an Episcopalian that had a whole bunch of Evangelical Christians as presidential advisers and confidants.

[blockquote]My point is why should you be able to judge someone for there group and not be wrong but someone who does the same to Muslims and non-believers isn’t.[/blockquote]

I didn’t say I should be able to judge them for their group and not be long. I said I would not extend trust and respect for their group because their churches and leaders will not renounce violence. Atheists do not have leaders and generally do not espouse violence, and Muslims in the USA frequently renounce acts carried out in their names.

As for not judging people for the group they belong to, how much judging of Trump supporters has there been here. Trump supporters are not a monolithic group either, and every last one of them is not a racist (see the “economic anxiety” phrase used on many liberal sites as a stand-in for “they’re racists).

If I am to extend trust and acceptance to all Evangelicals unless an until one of them tries to harm me, should I not do the same for Trump supporters?

“That’s different” is not an argument. There are plenty of Trump supporters primed to hate me for being a liberal (or an atheist) as there are plenty of Evangelicals primed to hate me for being an atheist (or a liberal).

So why should I watch my step around one group (Trump supporters) and not another group (Evangelicals), when they both want to take my rights. I’ll give you Evangelicals haven’t called for me to be deported, but in my entire town of Trump supporters none of them have called for me to be killed. None of them have called me unpatriotic. None of them want to take my freedom of religion.

Bouncing out for a nap here. I don’t see the difference, other than religion getting a special pass for being religion (as long as it’s Christian religion).

You’re entitled to your opinion. I was really talking to Ziggy and not you anyhow. He’s had a bad habit of in the past over-generalizing certain groups in the past and a lot of us have been trying to get him to work on it. I am not saying any religion should get a pass. I’m saying that the standard you seem to hold Evangelicals is the same that many in Islamaphobic circles seem to extend to Muslims. As I said, some people in this country can say they’ve had friends and loved ones killed by Muslim terrorists and I wouldn’t give them carte blanche to do that to Muslims. I just think you should consider the Evangelical community isn’t monolithic. As I have pointed out, there have been several Civil Rights activists who are Evangelicals. You have right every right to watch your step around them. I wasnt’ saying you didn’t have that right. I just think Ziggy should treat people the same way he wants to be treated as an American Muslim. He shouldn’t be treated as suspect because of the Tsarnaivev brothers any more than an Evangelical should automatically suspect because of the Jerry Falwells of the world.

Anyhow in the end AM. My point is that I don’t think it’s right generally speaking to just going about assuming the worst about someone and I think it’s really unhelpful for someone like Ziggs who by his own admission has lashed out at people for being in a certain group he feels anger towards whether that’s Republicans, Evangeicals, Sanders supporters, Serbs, people who were pro Scottish independence. I think Ziggs is a good guy and poster and I guess in a way I sort of see myself in a big brother role for him. I have a brother his age but Ziggs and I are both on the autistic spectrum so I want to try to help him overcome some of the stuff that people like him and I struggle with.

Turns out Huelskamp is ex-Congressman Huelskamp. He was dumped by Kansas voters for a more moderate Republican. Heh.

re: #522 Anymouse

You are also entitled to your opinion as well.

I will just work on how people have treated me in the past, as I am sure you would do. In the meantime, I will continue keeping my shotgun under my bed as long as that wingnut church up the road wants me dead, and as long as I have people coming in my yard yelling at me and threatening violence.

They were neither Muslims nor Trump supporters. (It was a Trump supporter that ran them off with her hoe.)

Going to bounce out for now … catch y’all later.

Take it easy. I think you really do misunderstand my point. I’m not saying you have been threatened or attacked by Muslims but I just don’t see how you can reconcile thinking it wrong to engage in Islamaphobia while assuming all Evangelicals must be like those people who threatened you. And make no mistake, I don’t begrudge you at all hating those people. There’s something very wrong with them that they would do what they would do. However, I ask again, how is assuming all Evangelicals are like that (if I interpreted you wrong, I apologize) any different from the people who lost loved ones in 9-11 assuming all Muslims are like that and being hostile towards Muslims because of that? And again, Klys and I especially have been working with Ziggy on his generalizations. It’s been a source of a lot of anger for him and as I said being someone with literally the same neurological condition as him, I’m trying to help him the best way I can navigate a very confusing world to people like me and him.

That may be one of the things I’ll miss a lot about the Obama administration. The VP Biden “character.” What fun can you have with Pence when the guy is a stuck up asshole who thought frigging Mulan was liberal propaganda.

re: #528 teleskiguy

The Onion is so good to Joe Biden. I hope he’s seen their shit about him, I’m sure he’d get a kick out of it.

Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. has never smashed a Whac-A-Mole game in a drunken fit. He has never invoked Freedom of Information laws to find out a female federal employee’s work schedule. And to the best of anyone’s knowledge, he has never washed his car in the White House driveway.

But to readers of The Onion, the satirical newspaper and Web site, the vice president has done all of those things, plus bounce a check for $39.50 to a liquor store and star in advertisements for Hennessy cognac that emphasize his international playboy swagger.

Political satire typically seizes on a public official’s foibles or flaws and exaggerates them — Gerald R. Ford’s clumsiness, Bill Clinton’s fast-food cravings, George W. Bush’s malapropisms, for example. Turning the craft on its head, writers at The Onion have created a caricature of the vice president that is entirely incongruous with his public image. Of all Mr. Biden’s imperfections, being a womanizer and a drunk are not on the list. In fact, he does not drink and has been, by all accounts, a devoted husband and family man for more than 30 years.

That impromptu speech he gave at his ceremony was something else. He said he didn’t deserve such honor.

I disagree, Mr. Vice President. You the man.

He has and loves it. I remember reading an article about it. By the way, my personal favorite Biden Onion story is when he landed in hot water for doing a Hennessy ad and I think you’ll get a kick out of this one since you like your winter sports.

I need to catch it. I was working late today. If you looked up statesman in the dictionary, you’d see Joe Biden’s face. I’m around the same age he was when he was first elected to the Senate and I hope I can spend my next forty four years doing good like he has. He’s really accomplished a lot. Obama was right, he was his first and best choice.

Having r

Yep. I’ll always hate the GOP’s holier than thou attitude. The whole “We’re more moral than you because we’re Christian conservatives.”

That is why we need to start calling them right wing elites. They think they are better than everyone else.

Next talking point: Tell the “Alt Right” the “White Genocide” they are afraid of they voted for. The destruction of the ACA, de-funding of Planned Parenthood and gutting of any social safety net is going to lead to white Americans dying.

They also voted for a “globalist” named Donald Trump.
