After Classified Briefing With Comey, Democrats Are “Outraged”

Politics • Views: 45,768

I think most people who aren’t hard core Trump cultists realize at this point that FBI director James Comey played a large part in tilting the 2016 election, by releasing that statement about “new Hillary Clinton emails” in the last days of the campaign — newly discovered emails that were then shown to contain absolutely nothing incriminating or even relevant.

But today House representatives had a classified briefing with Comey — and the Democrats emerged from the briefing expressing outrage at what they’d heard from Comey.

A number of House Democrats left Friday’s confidential briefing on Russian hacking fuming over the actions of FBI Director James Comey and convinced he’s unfit to lead the agency.

“I was nonjudgmental until the last 15 minutes. I no longer have that confidence in him,” Rep. Tim Walz (D-Minn.), ranking member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, said as he left the meeting in the Capitol.

“Some of the things that were revealed in this classified briefing — my confidence has been shook.”

Rep. Elijah Cummings (Md.), senior Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, delivered a similar condemnation.

“I’m extremely concerned — extremely,” he said.

“I’ll just — I’m very angry,” echoed Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.).

Clearly, James Comey revealed something in this closed session that was very incriminating — for him. We can only hope that this information comes out sooner rather than later, although it’s already too late to prevent the incoming Trump Horror.

This is what happens when an agency head is not up to the job. Get used to it we are about to see a lot more. From our nuclear weapons to healthcare to education.

One source in the meeting said Comey would not answer “basic questions” about the FBI’s current investigative activities. The FBI chief was grilled “over and over again,” according to the source, about his standards for acknowledging FBI investigations, with legislators repeatedly bringing up Comey’s dramatic public confirmation that the bureau was revisiting classification issues with Hillary Clinton’s private email server days before the election, as well as his summer press conference announcing that he would not seek indictment.

Clinton is said to blame Comey’s intervention, which contravened longstanding justice department rules, for her electoral defeat.

Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat who had pressed Comey during a September hearing about his criteria for acknowledging an investigation, sharply asked Comey if the director was applying a double standard to Trump.

Comey had said in September testimony that his standard was a “a need for public to be reassured, [and] when it’s obvious, it’s apparent, given our activities, public activities that the investigation is ongoing”.

Nadler, according to a different source, then asked Comey in the Friday meeting: “Do you believe that standard has been met with reference to the possible investigation of the Trump campaign’s possible connections to the Russian government? And if not, why not?”

Comey dodged the question, sparking anger amongst attendees.

A spokesman for Nadler confirmed the congressman pressed Comey on the issue.

Just seeing this. Let me guess, no Republicans have stated anything yet, correct?

If not, this will be played as a partisan witch hunt making a good man look bad.

I sure hope some Republican with some backbone makes a statement, or this goes away after this time next week.

The purge has begun:

In a bizarre move, Donald Trump has demanded that the commanding officer of the Washington, D.C. National Guard resign from his post in the middle of the Inauguration ceremony, even though the general will be in the middle of helping oversee the event’s security, the Washington Post reported on Friday.

OT or not, it’s relevant to the whole thing. I keep reading about Trump voters who didn’t think he really meant what he said, and I keep reading that we ‘Coastal Elites’ thinking those people are stupid is why Trump won.

I gotta ask - at what point did we decide that rubes taken in by an obvious con AREN’T stupid?

Don’t worry, Comey’s buddy Rudy Giuliani will be taking over the cyber for Trump. All will be well (and down the rabbit hole never to be seen again).

We’re already seeing the GOP pivot on inquiries about ethics and impropriety to what Clinton did or knew about what the FBI was up to - not what the FBI was doing (or not doing). See Chaffetz pushing this nonsense.

Watch the GOP gut the independence of the Ethics Office, so that Trump gets a pass on his conflicts of interest (rubber stamping the empty paper folders that Trump trotted out this week as “proof/evidence” of something that doesn’t qualify as a blind trust or divestment from his business ventures.

But Trump’s busy lashing out at Clinton again today, which suggests that Trump’s doing the very things he accuses Clinton of doing/having done.

That’s the MO for the Trump tweets. Claim others are doing what he’s already done.

Classic DARVO tactics, but he’s now pushing levers of government to achieve his goals (and those of the #GOPDontCare).

Good for John Lewis. Reasons to believe this election result is bogus start with Trump’s narrow margins in the critical states and include:

1) The critical states are ruled by Republicans at the state level. Voter suppression is certain and the counts themselves are open to question because Republicans.

2) Comey.

3) Russian interference in the election, in coordination with the Trump campaign.

Hover over the ad and write down the address you see at the bottom of the page. All you need is the main address. Everything after the . com / may not be needed. Then add that info to your exceptions list. Most anti-virus software has a page to add sites you do not want coming in.

This way another ad might be chosen to load and it won’t affect Charles like turning off all ads would. It can take a little work, but I’ve seen you mention that Arby’s ad a couple times so you may have a cookie that keeps attracting it back into your browser.

This counter-intelligence op should have started on Nov 9, 2016. Espionage can be a capital charge under Federal law, and it was amusing to daydream of scenarios where some or all of the major Trump campaign officials had to fight for their lives in Jan 2017. Alas it’s a pipe dream.

Any good evidence that was obtained has most likely been suppressed to provide a peaceful transition of power.

lawhawk  Jan 13, 2017 • 1:08:00pm

When you look at the GOP bills to repeal Obamacare in the past, the majority are simply ones that identify the PPACA enabling language and repeal it. A handful simply create sunset/repeal dates for the PPACA (including the one that was vetoed by the President last year), and don’t offer anything approaching replacement.

That would repeal everything, including funding for Medicaid, Medicare, and all the other changes that people like, need, and actually rely upon but don’t realize are part of the ACA’s suite of improvements to health insurance.

Now that they’re actually faced with task of repeal, they now have to figure out what to do.

That’s why the GOP better way/better plan is total vaporware. Heck, vaporware suggests that there’s something there. They haven’t even drafted a repeal, let alone replacement. The GOP simply don’t know what they’re doing - but they’re going to do it fast. And in the middle of the night. That’s how they roll in the Shire.

Seeing as how these fools are determined to axe needed health insurance for millions of Americans, I suggest that those who do in fact lose their coverage in the time ahead remit their medical bills to the following good people.

Speaker of The House Paul Ryan; 1233 Longworth HOB, Washington, D.C. 20515

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell; 317 Russell Senate Office Building,
Washington, D.C. 20510

President Donald J. Trump: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20500

Send it certified mail so someone there at these offices has to sign for it.

Fuck these clowns. Let them have to look at people’s bills. Seriously. I doubt they’ll care, but if enough Americans did this (like say, a few million) it might light a fire under their ass to actually do something meaningful (though I wouldn’t count on that).

Mattand  Jan 13, 2017 • 1:13:51pm

I think Comey just straight out said “Yeah, I did it to derail Clinton. I’ve been after her for 24 years and I saw my opportunity. To hell with the professionalism of the FBI and the well-being of the country. My job will be safe under Trump.”

I was listening to the Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe podcast the other day, and they were talking about how people’s brains react when they hear stuff that’s true but conflicts with their belief system. The subjects of the tests were self-described liberals.

The discussion turned to how people have their bubbles, and we should try to make an effort to listen to opposing points of view. The host, Dr. Steve Novella, who is a neurosurgeon and brother to two other regular panelists, made references to people he talked to who refuse to believe their candidate was lying, even when presented recorded documented evidence of such an act.

It’s worth noting that Dr. Novella and his two brothers occasionally reference their dad, who is implied to be conservative.

I’m trying to give the SGU a pass as they try to stick to science and science education. Here’s my thing, though: it really is staring to come off like that being forceful in calling out the out-and-out peril Trump and the current shit show the GOP has become is somehow being in a liberal bubble.

Complaining about the sitting head of the FBI pulling something that was out-of-bounds even for J. Edgar Hoover, the closest thing we’ve had to the head of a secret police force, is somehow being stuck in a liberal bubble.

I was talking with my dad at lunch yesterday. He watched the entire Trump presser. His only take away was that CNN was irresponsible and that Trump was justified in behaving like a two year old. Granted, I get a little worked up when talking about this stuff, but no amount of evidence that I present to him will convince him that Trump is a danger. He really honestly thinks everything will work out.

Point out that Trump has no experience in government? Doesn’t care.

Point out that Trump has paid his taxes in two decades? Well, he smart at working the system.

Point out that Trump not paying taxes is a sign that he’s a terrible businessman, and should not be allowed near the federal budget? Doesn’t care.

Point out that Paul Ryan wants to replace his current Medicare with insurance that will not cover anywhere near the amount money his afflictions cost him? Eh, I’ll be fine.

My dad claims to have voted for Clinton; is generally politically apathetic; and rarely, if ever, watches Fox.

But his whole take on Trump being President is that everybody is whining over nothing, and it will be okay. Part of that is my father is one of those personal fable types, who thinks nothing bad will ever happen to him. That’s part of how he views the current situation.

But my dad is just one of far too many Americans who feel this way. And Comey using the FBI to derail a presidential election, which was the same goal as the Russian government, means nothing to them.

But, no, pointing out the evidence that Donald Trump is spectacularly unfit to run the country in a way we’ve almost never seen in this country is living in a liberal bubble.

I just don’t know how we fight this. I really think we’re at the beginning of a really dark period in American history. I hate using this analogy, but the only reason Germany gave up on Hitler was because a good chunk of the civilized world nearly bombed them into oblivion. It’s not like they walked away from Hitler willingly.

I really do see a similar fate for the US. The problem is we may take most of the human, plant and animal life on this planet with us in the process.

In a sharp turn of events, President-elect Donald Trump is expected to name Philip Bilden, a private equity investment firm executive with no military or government experience, to be his first secretary of the Navy. The appointment would be the latest sign that Trump wants wealthy businessmen rather than military, policy or political leaders to run the military service agencies.

Bilden has now “moved to the front of the pack and is expected to be named as early as next week,” one transition official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about internal deliberations, told me. A second transition official confirmed that Bilden is now the likely choice, although nothing is final until announced. For months until recently, former Republican congressman Randy Forbes was widely expected to be named Navy secretary. Forbes had visited Trump Tower multiple times and was approved by top Trump transition officials.

But over the past couple of weeks, Bilden has emerged as Trump’s choice. His appointment would follow the appointment of another wealthy businessman, Vincent Viola, to be secretary of the Army. Trump’s defense secretary nominee, retired Gen. James N. Mattis, was furious about the Viola appointment, mostly because he wasn’t in the loop. But transition sources told me Mattis has signed off on Bilden.

I agree, but the catching up with us may include millions dying in nuclear firestorms.

The fact that I am hoping that the Vice President, a well-known and unapologetic relgious fanatic, will somehow be given the nuclear codes to prevent Trump from starting the Apocalypse, is ulcer-inducing.

When I’m feeling optimistic about Pence (that is a difficult phrase to even type) I think of how the Republicans have strung the religious right along for years, but basically ignored them once in office. Perhaps it will continue. If they repeal Roe and do some of the other crap the religiolists want, they’ll have nothing left to offer them.

OK—it’s a multi-layered pipe dream, but it’s all I have at the moment.

re: #102 lawhawk

I somtimes wonder if this is all just a big display to their ignorant base.

The old ‘they are doing the hard work of the people’ show for the crowd.

Then since most of their backers have no idea that Obamacare is the ACA, they can add some patches to the original package then call it FreedomCare or something and be seen as the he-rows that got rid of that nasty Obamacare and gave us what we needed.

(I hope at least…because they have boxed themselves into it)

From these two truly beautiful people to an angry yam and a godbotherer. I can’t stop crying.

In the interview with CNN, the vice president said he had told Obama over one of their regular private lunches that if his son Beau were forced to step down his position as Delaware’s attorney general and lose his income because of the brain cancer that ultimately killed him, the vice president and his wife Jill would have to sell their home to pay for Beau’s medical expenses.

He said Obama told him not to do that.

“He said ‘I’ll give you the money. Whatever you need, I’ll give you the money. Don’t, Joe. Promise me. Promise me,’” Biden told CNN.

Lately I have been mostly numb. Yes, I just came back to the page. The arby ad plays though a couple dozen times it seems and then another ad starts that will let me finally hit pause, which I just did. The Arby’s ad is really fucking aggressive about not being paused or stopped at all.

OK, well, that’s frustrating. It looks like it’s coming in through Google Adsense then, since that’s the only network that was still enabled. The bad thing about that: Google has nobody you can get in touch with about stuff like this.

They have an “Ad Review Center” that lets you look through all the ads that are set to run at your site, but it takes forever to go through them all, and searching for Arby’s turned up nothing. These kinds of abusive ads deliberately make themselves hard to find, but I’ll keep looking.

If you can right-click on the ad while it’s playing and select “Inspect Element,” you may be able to see the URL it’s coming from.

I don’t know how this will turn out, but it’s surely worth the effort. One of the initiatives is setting up smaller teams to research specific issues so we can spread the word to the larger group. Trying to give specific, focused talking points to contact our congress critters about (fed & state). I’m on the nascent “Environment” team, in the Public Lands subsection. So far, I’ve put together one quick document on the rule change that set the value of public lands as “budget-neutral” to make it easier to sell ‘em off.

At 12:01 PM Friday 20 January, 2017 the USA will not have any Ambassador, in any country on the planet.

“…The physicist has also received funding from the fossil fuel industry to produce reports that aim to cast doubt on climate change. A 2015 undercover investigation lead by Greenpeace revealed Happer agreed to produce a report with a fee of $250 an hour that he wanted donated to the CO2 Coalition, a climate-skeptic organization, according to the Guardian.

Happer also acknowledged that the report would likely “not pass peer-review with a scientific journal.” Likewise, in a 2015 testimony for the Senate Subcommittee on Space, Science, and Competitiveness, Happer argued, the “benefits that more [carbon dioxide] brings from increased agricultural yields and modest warming far outweigh any harm.”…”

To be read in Dr Seuss cadence:

In a land where the states are united, they claim,
in a sky-scraping tower adorned with his name,
lived a terrible, horrible, devious chump,
the bright orange miscreant known as the Trump.

This Trump he was mean, such a mean little man,
with the tiniest heart and two tinier hands,
and a thin set of lips etched in permanent curl,
and a sneer and a scowl and contempt for the world.

He looked down from his perch and he grinned ear to ear,
and he thought, “I could steal the election this year!
It’d be rather simple, it’s so easily won,
I’ll just make them believe that their best days are done!
Yes, I’ll make them believe that it’s all gone to Hell,
and I’ll be Jerk Messiah and their souls they will sell.

And I’ll use lots of words disconnected from truth,
but I’ll say them with style so they won’t ask for proof.
I’ll toss out random platitudes, phrases, and such,
They’re so raised on fake news that it won’t matter much!
They won’t question the how to, the what, why, or when,
I will make their America great once again!”

The Trump told them to fear, they should fear he would say,
“They’ve all come for your jobs, they’ll all take them away.
You should fear every Muslim and Mexican too,
every brown, black, and tan one, everyone who votes blue.”

And he fooled all the Christians, he fooled them indeed,
He just trotted out Jesus, that’s all Jesus folk need.
And celebrity preachers they all crowned him as king,
Tripping over themselves just to kiss the Trump’s ring.

And he spoke only lies just as if they were true,
Until they believed all of those lies were true too.
He repeated and Tweeted and he blustered and spit,
And he mislead and fibbed—and he just made up shit.

And the media laughed but they printed each line,
thinking “He’ll never will win, in the end we’ll be fine.”
So they chased every headline, bold typed every claim,
‘Till the fake news and real news they looked just the same.

And the scared folk who listened, they devoured each word,
Yes, they ate it all up every word that they heard,
petrified that their freedom was under attack,
trusting Trump he would take their America back.
From the gays and from ISIS, he’d take it all back,
Take it back from the Democrats, fat cats, and blacks.
And so hook, line, and sinker they all took the bait,
all his lies about making America great.

Now the Pant-suited One she was smart and prepared,
she was brilliant and steady but none of them cared,
no they cared not to see all the work that she’d done,
or the fact they the Trump had not yet done thing one.
They could only shout “Emails!”, yes “Emails!” they’d shout,
because Fox News had told them—and Fox News had clout.
And the Pant-suited One she was slandered no end,
and a lie became truth she could never defend.
And the Trump watched it all go according to plan—
a strong woman eclipsed by an insecure man.

And November the 8th arrived, finally it came,
like a slow-moving storm but it came just the same.
And Tuesday became Wednesday as those days will do,
And the night turned to morning and the nightmare came true,
With millions of non-voters still in their beds,
Yes, the Trump he had done it, just like he had said.

And the Trumpers they trumped, how they trumped when he won,
All the racists and bigots; deplorable ones,
they crawled out from the woodwork, came out to raise Hell,
they came out to be hateful and hurtful as well.
With slurs and with road signs, with spray paint and Tweets,
with death threats to neighbors and taunts on the street.
And the grossest of grossness they hurled on their peers,
while the Trump he said zilch—for the first time in years.

But he Tweeted at Hamilton, he Tweeted the Times,
And he trolled Alec Baldwin a few hundred times,
and he pouted a pout like a petulant kid,
thinking this is what Presidents actually did,
thinking he could still be a perpetual jerk,
terrified to learn he had to actually work,
work for every American, not just for a few,
not just for the white ones—there was much more to do.
He now worked for the Muslims and Mexicans too,
for the brown, black, and tan ones, and the ones who vote blue.
They were all now his bosses, now they all had a say,
and those nasty pant-suited ones were here to stayAnd the Trump he soon realized that he didn’t win,
He had gotten the thing—and the thing now had him.

And it turned out the Trump was a little too late,
for America was already more than quite great,
not because of the sameness, the opposite’s true,
It’s greatness far more than just red, white, and blue,
It’s straight, gay, and female—it’s Gentile and Jew,
It’s Transgender and Christian and Atheist too.
It’s Asians, Caucasians of every kind,
The disabled and abled, the deaf and the blind,
It’s immigrants, Muslims, and brave refugees,
It’s Liberals with bleeding hearts fixed to their sleeves.
And we are all staying, we’re staying right here,
and we’ll be the great bane of the Trump for four years.
And we’ll be twice as loud as the loudness of hate,
be the greatness that makes our America great.
And the Trump’s loudest boasts they won’t ever obscure,
over two and a half million more of us—voted for her.

Even Reagan’s crew were semi-normal (Except maybe James Watt). They at least respected the office of the President and the American system of government. Trump and his lackeys seem determined to replace the presidency with a CEO and an unelected board of directors chosen by the CEO, and turn the USA into a third-rate African dictatorship.

I had some Amazon orders arriving this week and I was concerned that packages were being stolen off my porch (a couple of orders have gone missing this fall/winter and the neighborhood Facebook group has been griping about the issue), so I went online and put a hold on my mail from 1/13 thru 1/17, then I added 1/12 to the hold the next day.

I came home on 1/12 and there were letters and a package in my mailbox. I figured that they didn’t get the change in time so I was OK with it. Today I checked the mailbox and there was a bunch of mail and a package. Along with the mail was a letter-sized printout with the Hold Mail Request and a handwritten “He changed date” with an arrow pointing to the ‘begin Thu 01/12/2017” instructions.

Now my mailman doesn’t even know that he’s supposed to hold tomorrow’s mail too. Luckily I already got the two packages and they weren’t stolen off my porch.

I am posting this on my FB. Giving you credit of course.
