Tech Note: The “Email an Article” Makeover, Now Mobile-Friendly

Thanks to MJML

In the past few days I’ve been working on a part of the LGF site that’s been woefully neglected for too long: our “Email an Article” feature, which you get to by clicking the little envelope icon below each article — the one that looks like this:

Would you believe this code hasn’t been seriously worked on for 10 years?

In a way it’s kind of cool that it was still functional despite the lack of attention, but with the advent of mobile devices it really started to show its age. The idea of the feature is to send a nicely formatted HTML email that contains most of the article, with images and links and all that good stuff. (It also includes an alternate non-HTML version for people who don’t want HTML in their emails.)

But on mobile devices, this HTML code was … well … less than optimal. Not perfect. Oh, let’s face it, it sucked. On some mobile devices it looked OK, but was shrunken down to an unreadable tiny size because it wasn’t scaled to the mobile screen. On other mobile devices it looked flat out awful, because they didn’t support CSS properly, or a myriad of other reasons.

The thing about mobile HTML email is that it’s a real nightmare to code, with so many devices out there, each with its own quirks and bugs. That’s one reason why I hadn’t done much with the code for a long time, because it was a daunting task.

But I’m pleased to announce that I recently discovered an open source framework called MJML that makes all of these compatibility headaches disappear like magic. Instead of writing the HTML directly, you code it with MJML’s custom tags first, then compile it to the special HTML that works in emails. Here’s a sample of what the MJML code looks like:

<mjml>
   <mj-head>
     <mj-title>Hello MJML</mj-title>
   </mj-head>
   <mj-body>
     <mj-container>
       <mj-section>
         <mj-column>
           <mj-text>
             Hello World!
           </mj-text>
         </mj-column>
       </mj-section>
     </mj-container>
   </mj-body>
 </mjml>

The MJML framework gives us a vastly improved “Email an Article” feature that looks great on almost any mobile device or desktop computer. The HTML version now scales beautifully to fit the screen size of whatever device you’re using to view it, and it works even with the most troublesome email clients (I’m looking at you, Microsoft Outlook). And as a bonus, our emails now include links to share the articles to Facebook and Twitter.

I always like to end these Tech Notes with a tip for programmers, so here’s something I figured out while working with MJML that wasn’t obvious and wasn’t in their documentation.

Since I use PHP to generate the email for this feature, I build the MJML code as a string. The official docs for MJML only describe how to compile the code from a file on disk and write the resulting code back to the disk, but this seemed like way too much overhead. So I worked out a way to use PHP to pass a string into the MJML compiler and get back a string of compiled HTML code. And here it is:

$mjml = '[[ MJML CODE HERE ]]';
$html = trim(
	shell_exec(
		'echo -n ' . escapeshellarg($mjml) . ' | mjml -i -s -m'
	)
);

This uses PHP’s shell_exec command to pipe the MJML string to the MJML command line compiler, and return the compiled code in the variable $html. The trim command is in there just in case there’s some white space at the beginning or end of the compiled code.

Well, he has a point, much of the hate that motivated the Bros to voting for Trump, voting Stein, or staying home was predicated on this idea that Obama was a warmongering monster as typified by his throwing Manning in jail and throwing away the key.

Yes - that’s why the $mjml variable is passed through the escapeshellarg() function, to make sure it can’t be used to execute any arbitrary shell commands.

There’s also some server-side security as far as making sure that your PHP parser isn’t running with elevated privileges - preferably in its own sandbox.

I agree. The stuff she passed on was not above the level of “Secret/NoForn”. Relatively light-weight intel. It was a stupid for her to do, and it *did* embarrass us. And she has spent five years in Leavenworth, which is no picnic.

But Snowden stole some big bombshells. That *was* dangerous for NatSec.

One thing that I don’t miss about moving to Platform as a Service cloud solutions is that I don’t have to deal with managing server security anymore. I have just enough knowledge of server configuration and deployment to be dangerous - and I mean that literally, in that I would not trust myself to roll out a production Web server as things stand today. Not to say I couldn’t learn, but it’s not in my wheelhouse.

And in Obama’s statement, he apparently makes it clear that he doesn’t see parallels between her case and Snowden’s, most notably since she has faced the legal system and Snowden has not.

I believe police officers who murder citizens and file false reports to cover their asses to be held accountable. I expect assholes who take over federal property, destroy it, and threaten federal employees with snipers aiming at their chests to be held accountable. I expect politicians to be held accountable for gross lies and passage of laws that directly threaten the health and well-being of our citizens to be held accountable.

Manning was held accountable and has paid a high price, one that will continue to be paid throughout her life. When might we expect the others to be held to account?

If only…

An open letter to Trump from the US press corps

We decide how much airtime to give your spokespeople and surrogates…we reserve the right, in the most egregious cases, to ban them from our outlets.

…When you or your surrogates say or tweet something that is demonstrably wrong, we will say so, repeatedly.

We’re going to work together…So, when you shout down or ignore a reporter at a press conference who has said something you don’t like, you’re going to face a unified front…

Here is a Scots poem in response to the Vogon Inaugural Poem:

From Scotland With Love
(For Joseph Charles MacKenzie)

MacKenzie, you poor man’s McGonagall,
rank mediocrity of wank and shite
that Burns wid ca’ a bawheid’s doggerel,
Ah’ll spit a rhyme for ye: Ye cannae write.

A decorated poet? Aye! A dick
drawn on yer foreheid wi an inky wid
be fine and fitting, a humungous prick
and fuckin big block capitals: NAE GUID!

Naw, wait! Fuck drawing! Wi black biro and
a set of compasses, ah wid tattoo
yer fuckin travesty of verse by hand
aw o’er yer skelped-arse face in blue

of Picts and fitba’ strips, the Scottish flag,
so’s every one ae us Jock Tamson’s Weans
at wan swatch ae yer ugly mug wid gag,
boak like at reekin pants wi squittery stains.

Yer rhyme for Trump’s inauguration wank?
Huv ye drunk his spunk? D’ye fuckin swallow?
Like pus squeezed fae a beilin pluke, it’s rank.
Ye’ve pisht on the Muses and Apollo.

Best of McLeod? Don’t make me fuckin laugh.
Yer tangerine nazi rapeclown’s fuckin loathed
by Scots who mind when rebels wurnae naff
gold-shittered gobshite Emperors unclothed.

Wallace and Bruce? Did ye watch Braveheart then?
Rob Roy wi Liam Neeson? Yer a joke!
Try John Maclean. Nae bonny hills and glens;
try our Red Clyde, ye fascist fuck, and choke.

It’s fit, but, ah suppose, yer numpty’s praise
shid come in scansion painful as the worst,
the world’s worst, poor McGonagall: the days
aheid, we’ll aw be sufferin, fuckin curst.

And aye, yer Tumshie Trump Train’s on its way
Towards it’s ain disastrous silvery Tay,
And yer best hope, McKenzie, is yer shitty fuckin rhyme
Will no be remembered—
wi yon prissy-lipped and fright-wigged
fake-tanned baby-handit Nazi bandit’s
treasonous dismantling of the USA—
Will no be remembered—
wi yon tragic bawbag’s Special Day,
remembered wi Traitor Trump’s Inauguration,
remembered wi the Death of a Nation,
remembered as a literary punch bowl turd,
to poetry as Trump is to the presidency: a crime.
—remembered for,
in the world’s worst poet’s words,
a very long time.

Bice: Man accuses Clarke of harassment at airport

In the one-page complaint, Black says he saw Clarke — decked out in a Cowboys baseball hat and shirt — on the American Airlines flight at noon Sunday but wasn’t sure it was the sheriff because he wasn’t wearing his signature Stetson. Clarke was flying first class, while Black had a seat in the back of the plane.

“As I passed him,” Black wrote. “I asked if he was Sheriff Clarke, and he responded in the affirmative. I shook my head as I was moving on to my seat near the back of the plane. From behind, he asked if I had a problem. I shook my head ‘no’ again and continued to my seat.”

Black, who first told his story on the Riverwest Neighborhood’s Facebook page, thought that was the end of that. The freelance videographer said he was returning to Milwaukee from a wedding in Dallas.

But when he got off the plane, Black said, he was met by a group of six uniformed deputies and two dogs, all of whom were accompanied by the sheriff. Black said he was then escorted to the waiting area and questioned by two of the deputies, who said Clarke had told them that Black had made “some remarks” to the sheriff on the plane.

Black said he burst out laughing when he saw his “welcoming party” because he knew what was happening. In the interview, he said he was asked who he was, why he was traveling to Dallas and what he thought of Clarke — a question he said he refused to answer.

Things like that are why I try and watch what I say when I’m tweeting at people I don’t normally interact with.

I’m trying for an “if in doubt that this adds anything to the conversation, don’t tweet it” rule of thumb.

Betsy DeVos tied to millions spent in Wisconsin politics

Michigan’s Betsy DeVos has had an outsized influence on politics and education in Wisconsin — especially the expansion of taxpayer-funded vouchers for students to attend private schools.

Now DeVos is President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. Education Secretary, and observers expect her to lessen the federal role in public education and vigorously advocate to expand access to voucher and charter schools in other states just like she has done here.

“Betsy DeVos had a lot to do with the expansion of voucher reform across the country and I think that’s because she worked closely with the groundbreaking program early on,” said Jim Bender, president of School Choice Wisconsin, referring to Milwaukee’s voucher program, the country’s first.

Stephens lies or ignores that PARDON≠COMMUTATION. They are not the same thing. Not even close.

The DOJ has a handy dandy FAQ that makes this quite explicit.

So many right wingers are all in a bunch over Manning getting her sentence commuted. It’s hilarious really. They take this seriously, but don’t have an issue with Wikileaks manipulating and dumping stolen emails that gave Trump the win. Their idea of natsec is partisan to its core.

Sure, a few will claim that it is proof Obama doesn’t care about the IC or natsec, but this isn’t a pardon (again, I repeat myself). Her guilt is on the record - the sentence was reduced for multiple factors - condition of her imprisonment likely being one.

And for the record I have hated fucking Wikileaks since (1) they fucked up redacting documents that inculded the names of interpreters; (2) since they were somehow fucking okay with Israel Shamir—Holocaust denier, conspiracy seller, Russian nationalist—until a big enough smell arose that they disavowed him.

The closed nature of their reception process and their airing process nullifies the entire point of ethical leaks. Instead of protecting leakers, they’re a clearing house of secret information that they get to distribute at their leisure…making them not at all journalists, and very similar to intelligence operatives (both signals and human). It’s always been a shitty concept, because there’s no reason to trust them as middlemen other than they say “trust us.”

More to the point, everything in the Presidential Daily Briefing will be known to Russia five minutes later once Trump is in office. That’s going to really complicate preparing these briefings.

Democrats raise concern about possible links between Betsy DeVos and student debt collection agency

By Danielle Douglas-Gabriel, The Washington Post

Education Secretary nominee Betsy DeVos and her husband have extensive financial holdings through their private investment and management firm, RDV Corporation. The firm, where DeVos once served as director, has financed real estate acquisitions, telecom companies and online charter schools, among other things. But one particular deal is creating concern on Capitol Hill.

RDV is affiliated with LMF WF Portfolio, a limited liability corporation listed in regulatory filings as one of several firms involved in a $147 million loan to Performant Financial Corp., a debt collection agency in business with the Education Department.

Twenty-three percent of Performant’s revenue is directly tied to its dealings with the Education Department, which awarded the company 14 contracts worth more than $20 million in 2016, according to regulatory filings and government documents. The company lost out on a recent contract bid with the department and is now protesting the decision with the Government Accountability Office, which can dismiss the dispute if the department reverses course.

Far, far more sinister: the kind of religious schools they want will produce children with an ethos that does not match current understandings of personal freedom and Constitutional rights.

How “smart” they are in testing sense, or in whatever practical field they end up pursuing, what will be entirely different is their sense of how to be American.

Freedom of press versus taboos about criticizing those who speak with God’s authority?
Freedom of speech versus blasphemy (broadly interpreted)?
Right to privacy versus the sanctity of married, monogamous sex aimed at procreation?
Et cetera.

Take a look at a place like Saudi Arabia: the people aren’t stupid, they also aren’t uneducated. But what they are is boxed inside an ethos instilled into them by the collaboration of state and religious institutions, in which there’s no such thing as absolute rights, let alone equal rights. Individual dissenters might pop up, but the majority can win just through inertia. And when truly loud dissent happens, part of the ethos is that those people deserve to be stepped on by the force of the state.

Translation: Schools should be laboratories for private business, with students used as guinea pigs for companies looking for closed systems to test their new products. They don’t want to drown it until they’ve squeezed all the money out of it first, in the form of vouchers for education, free land for oil exploration, military supply contracts, etc.

Once they’ve reduced it to a husk, THEN they can drown it. Or butcher it for stew, like the hen who doesn’t lay anymore.

Rod Dreher is having a special snowflake meltdown that Obama is using his long, hard, black pardon power and shoving it down Dreher’s lily white virgin throat…particularly with regard to Chelsea Manning.

There is a reason that Dante puts traitors in the lowest circle of the Inferno: because no one is safe if they have to worry about their own comrades betraying them to the enemy. I don’t care that what Bradley Manning revealed was, in part, military wrongdoing. If he felt so strongly about it, he ought to have been willing to take the punishment for his crime. He put the lives of many people at risk, and severely damaged the ability of men and women under arms to trust each other. In a not too distant age, he would have been executed.

Instead, he got prison — and he also got sob-story liberals like The New York Times to run pieces about how agonizing it was for him not to be able to masquerade as a woman while in jail, for treason

Of course, the last sentence is the real tell, since for Rod it is always about the transgender aspect of any story if a trans person is within a mile of it happening.

I wish to God Rod would just come out of the fucking closet and get some heels and a skirt at this point.

Special psychotic asshole comment award goes to perennial favorite Lord Karth:

Lord Karth says:

Or we could be artistic and have him impaled on an oaken stake. I’ll take either one.

Well, that sucks.

The Daily Beast

In a predictably off-kilter interview with Turkish TV network Haberturk, also last October, Lohan praised the Turkish strongman’s approach to an attempted coup that had left more than 2,100 people injured and 300 people dead. Lohan mused, “Erdogan did really well and his people, really admiring and respecting him, as the first elected president. This is a big deal.” For some perspective, the Turkish leader who Lohan is essentially Kellyanne Conway-ing for has been accused of restricting the freedoms of his constituents and instituting authoritarian practices. It was during this same interview that Lohan criticized the American response to her carrying a copy of the Quran, opining, “In Turkey you have free will as a woman, it’s amazing here, you can do what you want and it’s accepted, whereas I am in America and I am holding the Quran and I am the devil.” (Note: This could not be further from the truth.)

My wife passed along this link via FetLife (you get your news where you can find it now)

christianitytoday.com

Russia’s ban on evangelising (other than the Russian Orthodox Church) is now in effect.

The ban also includes obtaining buildings or holding private religious services in homes.

This is what happens when one church gains political power.

And this is why secular organisations here work so hard to prevent a religious group from taking over the US government.

There’s more to people like Mike Pence and Betsy DeVos than simply trying to destroy the branch of government they are in charge of, and this would be one of those things.

Yesterday, Russia’s new anti-terrorism laws, which restrict Christians from evangelizing outside of their churches, went into effect.

The “Yarovaya package” requires missionaries to have permits, makes house churches illegal, and limits religious activity to registered church buildings, among other restrictions. Individuals who disobey could be fined up to $780, while organizations could be fined more than $15,000.

Forum 18 offers an analysis of the laws and their ramifications for Protestants and other non-Orthodox believers. World Watch Monitor compiled the worried reactions of Russian evangelical leaders and concerned observers.

The new laws will “create conditions for the repression of all Christians,” wrote Russia’s Baptist Council of Churches in an open letter. “Any person who mentions their religious view or reflections out loud or puts them in writing, without the relevant documents, could be accused of ‘illegal missionary activity.’”

My guess would be that whatever private money-grubbing corp. that runs the school will set the curriculum.

This graph in her wiki is one of the most frightening things I’ve ever read.
DeVos, in contrast to the idea that the U.S. public education system should be maintained as a civic institution, views education as an industry that should be opened up to entrepreneurs and innovators, and she has stated that education is “a closed system, a closed industry, a closed market. It’s a monopoly, a dead end.

And again, libertarian conservatives do not understand how capitalism works. No one prevents any private school from competing with public schools.

While I am a proud private school teacher, I am an even prouder public school graduate(inner city school as well). Fuck this lady and the high horse she rode in on.

Well, at least the red state I live in has always valued public schooling, and makes sure it is well-funded.

That might have something to do with the fact that most of it is rural, and no private school can make money in the rural areas.

One example is the Valentine Consolidated Public School District (Cherry County). The county is one of the largest in the country, with one of the lowest populations.

As such, Valentine (population 1,700) runs an elementary and a high school in the city. Out in the county, there are a number of one-room schoolhouses, with attached living quarters for teachers. When there are children near those schools, Valentine will hire a teacher and open up the particular one-room school.

In my town, the one-room school (K-8) closed only a couple years ago to consolidate with the county seat here.

The secret here is that absent federal or even state funding, the natural fill-in for small schools in rural areas would be…heavily funded church organizations who don’t need to turn a profit on the local level because of their larger money flow, and also have a motive beyond straight profit.

Seems like another fine example of people who want to replace government funding with private in areas where no one could possibly make a profit.

There aren’t even enough people in rural Cherry County for churches outside the city itself.

From the school’s Website:

Cherry County Rural Attendance Centers

Covering an area of over 6,000 square miles, Cherry County is the largest land county in Nebraska. It is large enough to include two time zones and could fit the state of Rhode Island easily within its borders. Helping to educate students in rural Cherry County are four Rural Attendance Centers, each drawing students from several miles away. In these four schools are 10 of some of the finest teachers in the area, educating children where cattle outnumber people almost 50 to 1.

OT: Just got called by the village chairwoman saying I need to go into town tomorrow to sign the bank’s paperwork so I can sign cheques for the village.

Conservative village gave the liberal socialist the chequebook. Fortunately for the village, I am not interested in running off with the money.

(Cheyenne, Wyoming has less than $50k in the bank, while we have millions; Cheyenne is in a fiscal crisis because of conservative refusal to raise taxes.)
