Report: Trump Wanted Soviet-Style Military Parade for Inauguration

Politics • Views: 48,700

Remember when the big criticism of Hillary Clinton from the left was “she’s a war-monger!”?

Well, partly thanks to those people, we’re about to have a president who’ll show us the real meaning of “war-monger.”

During the preparation for Friday’s transfer-of-power, a member of Trump’s transition team floated the idea of including tanks and missile launchers in the inaugural parade, a source involved in inaugural planning told The Huffington Post. “They were legit thinking Red Square/North Korea-style parade,” the source said, referring to massive military parades in Moscow and Pyongyang, typically seen as an aggressive display of muscle-flexing.

The military, which traditionally works closely with the presidential inaugural committee, shot down the request, the source said. Their reason was twofold. Some were concerned about the optics of having tanks and missile launchers rolling down Pennsylvania Avenue. But they also worried that the tanks, which often weigh over 100,000 pounds, would destroy the roads.

“I could absolutely see structural support being a reason [not to use tanks],” a Department of Defense official said. “D.C. is built on a swamp to begin with.”

And our conservatives here don’t seem to get it: a conflict in Asia Minor only helps Russia (it doesn’t even help Israel) by driving up the price of oil.

Or maybe they do get it. While I was not a fan of Ronald Reagan or either Bush, I never questioned the loyalty of the GOP to our country until now.

Wayne Barrett, the journalist at The Village Voice who spent decades exposing corruption and double-dealing by politicians, landlords, and developers, died today aged seventy-one.

nytimes.com (article continues there). His 1992 book on Donald Trump was just re-released.

Wayne Barrett, the muckraking Village Voice columnist who carved out a four-decade career tilting at developers, landlords and politicians, among them Donald J. Trump and Rudolph W. Giuliani, died on Thursday in Manhattan. He was 71.

His wife, Fran Barrett, said the cause was complications interstitial lung disease.

A self-proclaimed country boy from Virginia and a lapsed seminarian, Mr. Barrett spent 37 years at The Voice, the alternative newsweekly started in Greenwich Village.

There he exposed the misdeeds that ensnared appointees and supporters of Mayor Edward I. Koch — a trail of serial corruption that he recapitulated in 1988 in “City for Sale: Ed Koch and the Betrayal of New York,” a much-praised book written with his mentor and fellow Voice mainstay Jack Newfield.

Trump’s concert draws 10,000 with temps in the 50s (and he says it’s the first time such a concert has ever taken place)

The Obama 2009 concert (at the exact same fucking location) drew 400,000 with temps in single digits.

The anti-trump rally in NYC today drew 25,000.

But, I read that Wolf Blitzer said the crowd at Trump’s concert was HUGE. (and by tomorrow, Fox will report attendance at 500,000, because the yam cannot be outdone by “that guy.”

I’ll lift my cynicism enough to say they’ll get half of what they’re aiming for made reality. And yet that will be enough to do lasting damage. They’re going to have 2-3 vacant seats on the SCOTUS bench to fill, and that means a lot of their long-term legal battles are gonna come down in their favor. Just imagine the utter chaos that will happen when RvW is overturned.

Most of the pro-liberal decisions by the Roberts court have happened despite Roberts’ votes. Even when he voted to rule the individual mandate a tax, it was because the conservative members of the bench wanted the law entirely invalidated, which was contrary to his own wish to simply invalidate the mandate.

(Goes to Stars and Stripes, more at the link) I can suggest a couple things the CVA could do with a rusty chainsaw.

WASHINGTON - As Donald Trump takes the oath of office Friday, a conservative-backed group that has gained more influence since the election is renewing its effort to transfer oversight of Department of Veterans Affairs medical facilities to a government-chartered nonprofit. It’s also seeking to expand veterans’ private-sector health care options.

Concerned Veterans for America has proposed the ideas before, creating consternation among more established veterans organizations that feared too much of an expansion into the private sector would drain the VA of resources. A bipartisan, CVA-commissioned task force outlined a plan for significant changes at the VA in 2015, and it was unveiled as draft legislation by Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., in June 2016.

The bill, titled the “Caring for Our Heroes in the 21st Century Act,” never went anywhere. But since then —- with Trump calling for an overhaul of the department and tapping one of CVA’s senior advisers to his transition team - group leaders say they have more leverage.

Mr. Trump claims the Cabinet he is assembling will have “the highest IQ of any ever assembled.”

politico.com

Yeah, I don’t think so.

President-elect Donald Trump bragged Thursday that his incoming Cabinet has “by far the highest IQ of any Cabinet ever assembled.”

Trump was speaking at a congressional leadership luncheon held inside his Trump International Hotel, located on Pennsylvania along the route his inaugural parade will travel Friday afternoon. Press was allowed inside the luncheon for a portion of Trump’s remarks, at least the beginning of which were dedicated to thanking congressional leaders and praising his incoming team.

The president-elect offered shout-outs to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Attorney General-designate Jeff Sessions, House Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers and United Nations Ambassador-designate Nikki Haley.

Trump saved special praise for Health and Human Services Secretary-designate Tom Price, who was the subject of several pointed questions from Democratic senators during his confirmation hearing.

“They were so nice to Tom, right? Where’s Tom? This guy’s become a star. Where is Tom? Man, were they nice to you. It is a lovely group of people, Tom,” Trump said. “They wanted to end his career so fast. And then they found out, man, he’s smart. We have a lot of smart people. I tell you what. One thing we’ve learned we have by far the highest IQ of any Cabinet ever assembled.”

I’m pretty sure that Hamilton, Knox, Jefferson and Randolph would beat this gang handily…even being outnumbered 4-1.

And we have Senator Jeff Sessions claiming that separation of Church and State is “unhistorical” and “unconstitutional.”

Sessions is also a Dominionist. Not taking bets here if he becomes AG that he would lift a finger to fight actual unconstitutional laws.

In all the times I’ve taken an affirmation of office in my life, both in the military and in my village government, I never once laid a hand on a Bible. I never once used the phrase “I solemnly swear” substituting “I solemnly affirm” instead.

As a matter of fact, as I was in the days just before my first oath as a village trustee it went all the way to the state AG as a question whether I would have to swear an oath “under God” (answer came back a couple days before: No.)

As egregious as some of Mr. Trump’s selections for his Cabinet are, Sen. Sessions is on the top of my worst list.

Supposing the states that prohibit in their constitutions atheists from holding public office choose to enforce those provisions? Will a Dominionist AG choose to fight those cases on behalf of those whose religious freedom are being denied?

It was only a couple years ago that wingnut Evangelicals at the Air Force Academy tried to withhold commissions from graduates who would not use the “so help me God” phrase. Would Sen. Sessions as AG defend those people?

There was discussion yesterday on a thread where someone challenged me on both the origin of Mars Hill Church in Grand Rapids (claiming it wasn’t seeded from the original Mars Hill Church in Seattle that collapsed under allegations of abuse).

That was correct, it turns out they have always been independent of each other.

That said, Mars Hill in Grand Rapids is in fact a Calvinist church, and Betsy DeVos is an elder of that church.

It was claimed a Calvinist church would not have a woman as an elder. (Funny how money trumps theology.) Mrs. DeVos attended Calvin College in Michigan. That college is associated with the Christian Reformed Church (a Calvinist organisation).

I’m guessing Mrs. DeVos would not likely uphold the religious freedoms of students as Education Secretary either.

Came across this while perusing the Paul Ham book ‘Passchendaele: Requiem for Doomed Youth’.
I was struck by how powerful an image it is. So simple and yet so different from the sources I’d seen in high school history. We mostly focussed on the jingoism and the propaganda posters of each power during the war years. It helped illustrate the blind national feeling that led to the outbreak of the Great War. What sources we saw that expressed the true nature of war, its terror and pointlessness, most powerfully came from reading Remarque’s ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ and the various battlefield poets in English class. The notion of a German hatred of war I learned mostly in Art class when we covered the Dada movement.
But this…
It’s just so sad. Death, traumatised.

The New Yorker wrote about the Mars Hill Church in Grand Rapids some time ago.

From that article, surprise, Betsy DeVos appears:

Bell says he is certain that Mars Hill will thrive without him, and perhaps it will. The current president of the council of elders is Betsy DeVos [bold mine], a prominent Michigander. (Her husband, Dick, was the 2006 Republican gubernatorial candidate.) DeVos says, “We knew it was only a matter of time before Rob would be compelled to use his gifts in other ways.” Earlier this year, after a period of indecision the church announced that it had found a replacement: Kent Dobson, a broad-minded pastor who also happens to be the son of Bell’s mentor, Ed.

I remember the book “Love Wins” - a fairly conventional take on Universalism that is common to the beliefs of most mainstream protestants in America. It is, however, hated by fundamentalists since it posits a loving such as Christ preached of rather that one that allows for the calvinist heresy or even simple power over the congregation.

That DeVos comes from a leadership that would force out a preacher like Bell does say an enormous amount about her - and all of it is negative to me.

I am not going to start a discussion of it. And recall, it was the Electoral College that gave us Abraham Lincoln with less than 40% of the popular vote.

I guess that in the end, I guess would favor a simple popular vote system - with a runoff election if no candidate gets an uncontestable majority.

Well, I avoid the word heresy since that word pretty much means “you refute the my religious beliefs” (and I might kill you for it).

In my mind I don’t see any difference to any religious faith’s theology since they all start by positing something unprovable and demand faith in that unprovable proposition.

That said, there is quite a bit of difference between what a mainstream Protestant church or a UU church might posit as worthwhile morals or ethics and other chuches like Calvinists or Mennonites. (They do all use the same book, they all just pick out the parts they like. Some like the parts that are horrid, but they still all believe in the same book.)

I still like the fictional election system from Legion of Super-Heroes (set in the DC’s 30th century). People that meet the criteria for running for office are RANDOMLY selected (unclear what the exact criteria are), and have 1 day to campaign.

Because at this point, it feels like the 2016 campaign had gone too long before Thea hit us and knocked Luna off into its slowly-receding orbit…

I consider the word useful as a way to describe teachings that lead one away from the essential good of God in Jesus - loving your neighbor as yourself, golden rule, taking care of the stranger in your land, Matt 25, etc. I look at as what needs to be resisted in my church just as, say, white supremacy needs to be resisted in the incoming regime. Nothing more.

Sadly, the Bible was (and is) also used to justify slavery, to justify oppressing women and minorities, &c.

Since picking from it (even just the New Testament) can be used to justify slavery (consider Jesus in the NT never spoke against slavery and Philemon speaks of returning a slave to his master), I look for those moral positions elsewhere.

Moreover, the Golden Rule is not simply an artefact of Christianity: versions of it can be traced all the way back to ancient Egypt. Its Biblical version is in Leviticus, the same book that justifies stoning gays.

Nevertheless, many people will argue that the Old Testament was abolished by Jesus in the New Testament (though that is not what is recorded there). If so, the Golden Rule was abolished as well.

WASHINGTON ― Donald Trump has been called a con man and a huckster. An unstable pathological liar. A degenerate. And that’s just by other Republicans.

At noon Friday, they and every other American will call him Mr. President.

“God has a sense of humor,” said John Weaver, who ran Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s campaign during the GOP primaries.

How this happened is still being argued over ― by Republicans like Weaver and Kasich, who watched him hijack their party despite little knowledge or interest in their orthodoxies, and then by Democrats, who watched a candidate they saw as patently unelectable manage to win key states anyway and take an election they were confident was theirs.

Because of my position, should a discussion of the presidency come up, I will use the President.

As I tend to use international English phrasing, I generally refer to presidents as “Mr. _____” when I write.

So it is unlikely I would use (except as an example here) “President Trump.”

I actually second this.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m as worried about all this as everyone else. But I’ve seen it happen in real life with people too big for their own britches just trip on themselves and beclown themselves in shocking fashion. And that’s not including rouge IC agents who manage to “leak” info about Trump misdeeds undermining his effectiveness; Trump undermines himself with his own assholeishness and skinflint mental state.

Maybe it was meant to be that Trump’s ultimate failure has to happen as the most powerful man in the free world United States.

And WRT the Supreme Court, right now, the GOP fuckery last year thus far only managed to retain one seat. Best case scenario… that makeup remains in place, or, Trump has to replace Thomas. I would be more concerned about Anthony Kennedy possibly retiring than of RBG and Breyer, where a true wingnut majority emerges.

Either way, there will be no escaping total humiliation. It’s not a perfect situation, nor is it something worthy of a Pollyanna spin. But Trump and the GOP have the ability to lose their own advantage.

This deeply blue Wisconsin village still seems surprised it voted for Trump

As the Packers and Cowboys kicked off earlier this week, a couple of dozen regulars arrived at the Vet’s Bar with potluck dishes to share, including a crockpot of hot dogs, macaroni salad, deviled eggs and layered dip. Many brought along their own beer koozies, and the bartender passed out green or yellow Jell-O shots every time the Packers scored a touchdown.

Sitting at the bar was a 63-year-old cook who voted for Donald Trump because “everything sucks” right now and there’s no way things could get worse. Next to him was a 59-year-old school lunch lady who believes Trump’s policies will lead to a significant increase in her wages and cheaper health care.

The American Legion recommends that for a flag flown from a gaff on a porch, a black ribbon the length of the flag and width of one stripe be affixed to the peak of the flag, to represent half-mast.

I don’t have a black ribbon that size. Maybe at some time I can go to a fabric store but today I’m putting out the flag of Russia (a souvenir from a trip to Moscow in 2007)

We are talking about a sector of our population where no amount of real-world results matter. No evidence-based facts matter. Historical statistics and history does not matter. To them, their belief in a Daddy-type authority figure and declarations mandating future results will always “trump” reality. Remember we are dealing with a sector not ignorant of science and learning, but openly hostile to it.

The crime in question involved fraud against jail inmates, a business, and his county.

NASHVILLE — Former Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold pleaded guilty Wednesday to three of 14 counts stemming from a two-year criminal investigation into illegally profiting from inmates through a company selling electronic cigarettes.

Arnold pleaded guilty to wire fraud, honest services fraud and extortion. Each count carries up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, supervised release of not more than three years and a $52,500 restitution payment from electronic cigarettes revenues from the JailCigs business to the county.

This is why people who have lived under authoritarian regimes, such as my sister-in-law (formerly of the Soviet Union) recommend keeping a diary of what remains the same and what changes. The idea is to show you that you are not going crazy, the regime is trying to make you believe you are.

I have taken her advice.

I’ve said before that one of the reasons that I’m no longer a Republican is because I have a good memory.

I remember Sean Hannity going from saying it wasn’t Congress’s job to declare war on Iraq to saying that Obama was a tyrant for allegedly ignoring the Constitution.

Tomorrow we can argue about how many people actually attended. In researching for this comment, I learned something:

Congress ordered the National Park Service to stop issuing crowd estimates after the agency gauged the crowd at the Million Man March in 1995 at about 400,000 people. That estimate drew the threat of a lawsuit from leader Louis Farrakhan, who called the figure defamatory and threatened to sue. (Using aerial images and basic math, a team at Boston University determined that between about 670,000 and 1,005,000 people attended.)

Thank God it is Saturday tomorrow and I will been ass deep in a vehicle repair.

I don’t want Mr. Trump to fail. I don’t want any president to fail. Failure is bad for the populace and an opening for rival nations to exploit.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The Loyal Opposition must stand up and take action against the incoming occupant of the White House (Putin).

After Trump and Pence both said that their campaign had no contacts with the Russians, it’s clear that they most certainly did:

Someone’s lying - and we’re not just talking run of the mill lies - like yesterday’s assertion that no one ever did an inauguration concert at the Lincoln Memorial that was as big or as successful (hint - Obama did and the crowd was 10x the size).

No, this is national security serious. Criminal and potentially treasonous activity and we still don’t know the extent to which Trump owes what to the Russians. That has direct consequences for US foreign policy, and we already see Trump pushing Russia-friendly policies that contradict longstanding US policy, threatens NATO allies and our relationship with Europe and the rest of the world.

Everything about Trump is a lie - right down to stocking his announcement for running with a bunch of extras who he then stiffed:

Conway lies. Pence lies. They all lie about everything. Trump lies, obfuscates, and his supporters don’t care (all while claiming he’s a straight shooter and take him at his word). Cognitive dissonance isn’t a strong enough term to describe what is going on.

We aren’t just slouching towards kakistocracy - Trump’s gish galloping towards it. He’s overwhelmed everyone with the sheer scope of his lies and baffling BS. But we can discern what he and the GOP intend to do by the nominees he’s chosen. Incompetents, unprepared, and extremists. All intend to undermine government and the safety net so that even more benefits inure to the rich and all the burdens get shifted to those least able to endure them.

This isn’t the Shining City on the Hill. This is the opening verse of a dystopian nightmare unless we stand opposed to it.

But

The Obama 2009 concert (at the exact same fucking location) drew 400,000 with temps in single digits.

The anti-trump rally in NYC today drew 25,000.

But, I read that Wolf Blitzer said the crowd at Trump’s concert was HUGE. (and by tomorrow, Fox will report attendance at 500,000, because the yam cannot be outdone by “that guy.”

On Friday mornings, The Current (the MN public radio’s rock station) has a thing called ‘song wars’ where the djs each pick a song and listeners choose their favorite. The two songs this morning were “For What It’s Worth” by Buffalo Springfield and “Killing In The Name” by Rage Against The Machine. “Killing..” won decisively.

The djs are trying to keep their horror in check this morning but they’re not doing a very good job. There’s no doubt that they are going to lose every penny of their public funding. I’m not feeling incredibly sorry for them because they bent over backwards to be evenhanded (both sides! all politicians!) during the run-up to the election. I had to turn them off this morning because I just can’t…

You can always take the measure of a person by how they interact with children and pets.

Obama? No question that he loved children and would always find a way to interact/entertain/have fun with the kids that came through the White House.

google.com

Trump? No such luck. We’re never going to see any photos even remotely close to what Obama did. What few photos we find, we see Trump stiffly interacting and the children sensing the discomfort.

The nation is still not coming to grips with how badly they screwed up in November even as Obama leaves the White House in just a few short hours.

One of the biggest regrets of my life was that I voted against @POTUS44 twice. That man deserved far far more respect than this country ever gave him. That is equally applicable to the Republicans that blocked his every move to the Democrats that ran away from him at the midterms.

The nation is still not coming to grips with how badly they screwed up in November even as Obama leaves the White House in just a few short hours.

My greatest wish is that Trump be as much an absentee landlord as Bush was. 800 vacation days? Hell, take a thousand more.

The things he guts, the NEA, the NPS, will limp along for four years and get refunded by the next administration.

It’s time to pick smart battles and look for ways to survive the ones we won’t win.

One good reason not to own a television set. No cable here anyway. I have a choice of Christian radio stations, wingnut radio stations, a rock station that plays FOX News on the hour, and an NPR station in Alliance that will likely get the axe under the next administration.

It does make me wonder. IF we elect someone like Trump in a time of economic prosperity. What could we potentially fall prey to in times of economic troubles? We were fortunate in the Depression. We got FDR and the Germans got Hitler.

I rarely watch anything live on television. I do try to catch Jeopardy when I am eating dinner and I’ll watch the morning news while fixing breakfast. Turned it on this morning and immediately flipped it off because of the inaugural coverage.

Y’all who might not have voted for Obama ever I think show him more appreciation and respect than many people I know who did vote for him. A lot of them I think had unrealistic expectations of him and are still finding little things to nitpick at like the fact he didn’t pardon Pettier or Singleman, ignoring that he’s commuted the sentences of more people convicted for minor drug offenses than any President ever. Speaking of which, that’s one of my biggest worry about the Trump years. We have IMO been trending in the right direction on drug policy, i doubt a Clinton AG would push for federal legalization but I do think a Clinton justice department wouldn’t be like Sessions.

I joined the Navy when Jimmy Carter was President and the military was near-universally hated as the Vietnam War had only recently ended when I joined.

I was not a big fan of Ronald Reagan or GHW Bush (particularly the latter slagging on whether I could be considered patriotic or a citizen because I am an atheist), but I didn’t think either one would lead the military into an absolute disaster; I didn’t think either would try to abolish civilian control of the military.

Picking Gen. Mattis for the civilian position of Defense Secretary is not good for civilian control of the Armed Forces (regardless of what you think of Gen. Mattis; no military person should be put in that position).

Can’t wait for the Trump twits to claim 2 million people showed for the inauguration, because if you exaggerate, you better do it in extreme style.

Right now, I’d say that they’re looking for significantly less than a million. If they crack 500k I’d be surprised. And of that number, I’m guessing there’ll be a bunch of protesters too.

Well, what she thinks about the Feds being involved in disability rights is trumped by the ADA. That showed amongst other things how deeply unqualified she is.

On the other hand, unqualified is exactly what the Republicans want.

Maybe if she actually learned about public education instead of using her fat wallet to weaken it, she’d know that public schools do a lot better for children with disabilities than any of those private or charter schools she loves to champion. People shit on public education a lot in this country but most of my teachers were people who cared about my education and we had programs that helped me deal with my learning disability a lot better. I wouldn’t have done as well as I did in school if the conservative vision on education had won out.

re: #66 Anymouse

That was me. However, Mars Hill Bible Church was and remains a non-denominational church. It is not part of any of the many (so, so many, because they splinter and splinter and splinter) Reformed denominations out there. And I mentioned that Betsy DeVos was an elder, because none of these conservative Reformed denominations would allow a woman to be an elder, but MHBC did.

Also, with regards to Calvin College, it’s not quite the bastion of conservatism you make it out to be. One professor ended up on the right-wing “Professor Watchlist,” and over 100 more faculty members signed a request to be added to the list.

mlive.com

That said, I do think Ms. DeVos is going to try and destroy our system of public education and route the money to church schools. I don’t want my tax dollars going to any religious schools. I don’t care if it’s a Baptist school or a Wiccan school, I don’t want my money going there!

In the past, I think the public school system was seen as the great equalizer at least for white pupils. It was something that we all could benefit from but then when integration happened, that’s when the backlash against public education really started on the right in this country. A lot of modern right wing ideology’s roots I think are in response to integration and Civil Rights. Education is only one example of that but entitlements too. Not that there weren’t wingnuts opposed to those in the 50’s and early 60’s but what really created the mass backlash against them was how the right in the 60’s took advantage of anger about “those people” getting the same benefits.

One of my wingnut cousins went to Calvin College specifically because it was a bastion of Christian conservatism. My step-father’s sister (former presbyter of Chicago, now lives near the college) says she won’t go anywhere near the place.

From Wikipedia’s very first paragraph on the college:

Calvin College is a liberal arts college located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Founded in 1876, Calvin College is an educational institution of the Christian Reformed Church and stands in the Reformed tradition of Protestantism. Calvin College is named after John Calvin, the 16th-century Protestant Reformer.

The Christian Reformed Church is explicitly Calvinist in nature (might by why the college is named after John Calvin).

Why did movement conservatism spread like wildfire in the 60’s? Because conservatives cynically saw a lot of white Middle America’s anger that racial minorities were going to benefit from the promise of the New Frontier and Great Society and all a sudden people who had benefited from programs like the GI Bill, government subsidized housing, welfare, etc became adamantly opposed to them and suddenly discovered all their success was done all by themselves. And that frankly is why the Sanders approach to dismiss the racial and cultural issues as distractions is so foolish.

Barack Hussein Obama is no longer President of the United States.

Any violence will benefit Trump, who will justify any crackdown and elimination of civil rights in the process as needed to pacify the inner cities. Just watch.

In the past, I think the public school system was seen as the great equalizer at least for white pupils. It was something that we all could benefit from but then when integration happened, that’s when the backlash against public education really started on the right in this country.

We just had a President who embodied the American Dream, namely that no matter what your race or social origins, if you work hard and apply yourself, you can reach the highest office of the land.

And how did the Right react to this very personification of their ideals? By calling him a Kenyan Muslim Affirmative Action slacker tyrant. Because doing otherwise would have meant recognizing his achievements, even grudgingly, and that was just too much to ask of them.

Violent protest in DC (per NPR and WAMU)

From 12th and L streets NW, (WAMU reporter) Madden reports that several hundred protesters dressed in black were running through streets, breaking windows with hammers and knocking over trash cans. Police have chased them on motorcycles. Some officers are in riot gear, and National Guard officers are also on scene. Protesters broke the police line and the officers are using pepper spray to subdue the demonstration. Police are also using an unidentified concussive device to break up the protest. Madden also recently reported on air that the police appeared to be getting a handle on the situation.

At one point in time, the American Dream also involved the forced slavery of millions for hundreds of years based on skin color alone, the extermination of the First Nations, and deliberate hatred against the Irish because they were Catholic.

And we have a major political party in charge who will remain foreverrmore convinced that neither of these injustices was a bad thing at all.

This. People just don’t realize what a bat-shit crazy right-winger DeVos AND her family have been, is, and will always be. The info is out there… those who voted for this clusterfuck of a POTUS could have spent a litle time figuring out just who was pulling the levers. They couldn’t be bothered, though. Instead, goddamnit they’ll blame everyone else when their jobs dry up, their kid’s schools have run out of cash, and DeVos is leading the charge against everything they’ve ever worked for.

Meanwhile every Republican outside Reagan is someone who was born on third base and thinks they hit a triple. I have now been living as a European expat for nearly as long as I ever lived in the ‘States. Still have not seriously considered renouncing US citizenship, but I am already looking into what it would involve if I do take that option…

I’m seriously considering on our trip to Yukon this summer finding out if there is a way I can stay.

At the next village board meeting, I am going to have to ask the village attorney that if they actually try to pass Steve King’s (R-Wingnut) bill to strip citizenship of those whose grandparents were not all legal immigrants if I have to resign from the village board.

Anyone surprised at this has either been living in a cave for the past 10 years or is Chuck Todd.

I will go for high class drinks of Captain Morgan’s and black cherry Kool-Aid. (I don’t have any Brawndo in stock.)

I can’t mix liquor with powdered drinks. I got really sick when I mixed Absolut with Iced Tea when I was younger. I have been mixing my whiskey with Ginger Ale and Lime Juice. I’m out of Ginger Ale though so I’ll drink it clean.

You’re in Germany right? Recently got my tickets for the trip I’m taking this summer: Going to Berchtesgaden, Munich, Nuremberg( a great recommendation by my boss, he says the city retains a lot of its prewar look), Colditz, and Berlin.

I took my family to the first three locations in 2015: Berlin and NE Germany will be part of the next outing.

I live on the Rhine near Bacharach, also a great destination.

Hey, I forgot I still have Vernor’s from my last trip to Canada. That would be a better mixer than Kool-Aid.

I honestly wonder how the hell they would prove that. I’ve got my mom’s maternal grandparents immigration records but I don’t have any for my mom’s grandfather. I remember when that bigot Coulter suggested that only people who had four American born grandparents should be able to vote. I did the math quickly and found out that I would despite having family in the U.S as early as Washington’s first term be the first in my family that could vote. My Dad just missed since his Dad’s Dad was born in Germany.

I’m still trying to figure out how my home state of Michigan went from crushing Dick DeVos with Jennifer Granholm for governor to putting Trump and his pick of Betsy DeVos in office in such a short time.

I feel ya. I’m still wondering how my home state of Wisconsin(who has seen the injection of the Devos family politics first hand) keeps going red.

I’m gonna say it - it’s the media or lack of media in WWC America coupled with straight up apathy, with a huge dose of rah rah go team right-wing bullshit.

I’ve been watching this phenomenon since before the 2010 election, and I don’t see things getting better any time soon. Apologies if that’s a bummer.

I’ve been to Berlin and Munich before but really didn’t get to explore too many WWII and modern spots. It should be a good trip since I’m going to have my brother with me who has four years of German under his belt. I liked Munich the most of the places I went to. Berlin and Heidelberg were nice too though.

Easy in my case: It was illegal for Poles to immigrate to the United States when my paternal grandparents did to escape the Nazis.

The National Mall is understated today.

Underpopulated is another term.

There’s enough room there for a military parade convoy of tanks to drive through with no problem. /though I’d have to wonder whose nation those tanks belonged to.

Right. I don’t even know if my mom’s paternal grandparents emigrated legally or not. It was a few years before WWI broke out. And hell all my Irish ones pretty much came when there was no concept of illegal immigrants.

your mistake was using powdered drinks. Vodka and orange juice concentrate. High test screwdrivers that taste fantastic.
