Is Twitter Force-Following Donald Trump’s @POTUS Account?

Internet • Views: 64,484

Earlier today, when the @POTUS and @FLOTUS Twitter accounts were switched over to the Trump-Thing and his third wife, I made a point of unfollowing both of those accounts.

But then, a little later today, I checked them and lo and behold — I was suddenly following both accounts again!

OK. I know distributed network databases can be tricky and get out of sync, so I was willing to give Twitter the benefit of the doubt and assume they were restoring the follower lists after switching account ownership, and it took some time to propagate across their entire network.

But tonight I’ve been hearing from more than a few people that they were never following the @POTUS and @FLOTUS accounts, but suddenly find themselves added to their followers without consent.

Hence, the question in the title of this article.

I hope Twitter will clarify what’s going on here, because it’s happening to a lot of people and they’re not happy about it.

I had blocked @potus earlier, but sure enough, they forced a follow on me. Hit “unfollow” and it went back to “block.”

Not the case with @flotus, though. Still blocked.

Nice going, @jack.

Interesting, if true. I found that I was following the POTUS account, but I can’t remember if I’d been following it before, or if I’d planned to follow it for the sake of repeatedly asking Trump why he lets Russian hookers pee on him.

I’ll check again later and see what’s up…

I never followed @POTUS or @FLOTUS in the first place. I’ve been checking intermittently with the current accounts and I’m not following either.

I’ll get suspicious if I’m following them tomorrow.

I think that it is really revealing to see what the #1 trending item on Twitter is right now in the United States (note that the first one listed isn’t actually trending but is simply “promoted”), and is more than double the number as the second-place trending item.

You own this one, Donald. All by yourself.

Yet another reason to give a big index finger to Twitter and never use their “service”.

We’ve discussed this before, Charles and I appreciate that we disagree.

But Twitter is no longer worth it, if it ever was. They’ve decided they can make more money by being quislings to the incoming regime.

I was out in the car for a long time today and tried to avoid the worst of the inauguration by tuning in NPR rather than, say, praise music or Sean Hannity or bad country, which are pretty much the choices on your dial around here.

I hear the Donald introducing Bill and Hillary at some kind of inaugural lunch, praising them as fine people, and calling for a standing ovation for them.

Five minutes later they’re interviewing some dipshit who came up from Florida for the big toot because she wants to celebrate Trump, who she says is a man who “says what he means and means what he says.”

WTF world are these people living in?

US conservatism is inherently vicious. That’s only natural since its basis is splitting society apart into warring factions so that sociopathic plutocrats can continue to rule without even being seen to be the rulers.

Here’s what the CNN piece had to say:

About 550 miles to the southwest, a few hours before the inauguration, a few dozen Japanese conservatives enjoyed a celebration of the new American president at a restaurant in the city of Fukuoka.

Since the swearing-in would be happening too late for their gathering, diners watched Election Night footage on a big screen.

“Trump is such an honest, outspoken person who has the same way of political thinking as us,” event organizer Yoko Mada said.

“What conservatives in Japan have been wanting is to bring this nation out of the so-called post-war regime, and one symbolic thing would be us owning our own military again, which Trump supports.”

The rude pundit hits the right tone for inauguration day:rudepundit.blogspot.com

I didn’t watch the Inauguration of a sentient yam, Donald Trump, as president of the United States (vomits in mouth a little). I don’t need to watch bonobos jacking off to know that it’s strange and loud with fluids being hurled at the end. But I did read Trump’s address, and it was a warmed-over stump speech, filled with the kinds of baffling, weird, and apocalyptic rhetoric that propelled him to become head chalk eraser clapper at the special school.

For instance, what the fuck does this mean: “You came by the tens of millions to become part of a historic movement the likes of which the world has never seen before”? Trump’s said that repeatedly, and it’s not just a lie (Civil rights movement? The French Revolution? The Russian Revolution? The goddamn Protestant Reformation?), it’s utterly meaningless. Every election is a historic movement. It’s just part and parcel of Trump’s nonsensical marketing of himself: every fucking thing his dick gets hard about is the greatest thing ever.

I doubt the majority are, otherwise there’d prolly be blood running in the streets. I have lots of Christian neighbors and none of the are like that. YMMV

Whenever I see assholes like that I try to picture Jesus (a.s.) standing there with them, enraged, screaming spittle-flecked insults at innocent people, but I can never quite draw a believable picture in my head.

That’s just it, he wouldn’t. He’d have been taught the law and prophets and would know deep in his heart to love your neighbor as yourself, to care for the stranger because we are all strangers living briefly in god’s world, and, as Micah taught:

“He has told you, O mortal, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?”

And this is why he taught us in Matthew 25 to care for the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, to cloth the naked, to care for the sick and visit those in prison. Those are the important things, not these idiots grubbing for secular power.

He’s not wrong. American Christianity is fundamentally broken in deeply disturbing ways.

This Liberal, Feisty, Pissed Off and getting ready to match tomorrow Episcopalian is a wee bit sensitive to the “all Christians.”

Plenty of Christians are a pain in the ass and I guarantee those same Christians are just as much a pain in the ass to me.

And had I been anywhere near this idiot my poor husband would have been looking the other way and pulling our children close as I walked over there to talk Jesus with him.

He’s not wrong. American Christianity is fundamentally broken in deeply disturbing ways.

That’s because in many ways large segments of the populace are Americans before they are Christian. They conflate the two in their heads but the source of their faith is America, not Christ.

I’d give you my usual spiel about the American faith’s holy items (guns, flags) and how it’s as bloodthirsty as the Aztec religion, but you’ve heard it all before.

A lot of Christians, like my wife, do separate their faith and their patriotism. She and they understand they are not the same thing.

In Longville, Minn., retired librarian prepares for solo women’s march

Michelle Barton wishes she could be part of a big women’s march on Saturday, but she lives in the tiny town of Longville, Minn.

“I thought OK, I’ll just see what happens if I create my own march,” she said. “It was kind of a lark.”

Barton went to the Women’s March website and signed up to host her own. She got out some tagboard and markers.

“My hope was that some people might join me,” she said. “I have a very active imagination, so my worst case scenario was people driving by and taking pot shots at me.”

The reason is obvious. When you make the problems sound insurmountable, then proclaim that you and you alone have the unique knowledge, skills, and talent to solve them, you’re essentially trying to goosestep your way toward proclaiming godhood. Trump is a half-step away from proclaiming himself and himself alone “America’.

Got home from work, having read about the possible DT/Twitter shenanigans tonight, and checked my Twitter; the only account that I had been following was @POTUS and I forgot to unfollow it before today. However, it didn’t matter, because my follow had automatically changed over to the @ObamaWhiteHouse account archived by NARA, not Trump’s @POTUS.

Just fine by me.

It might be incompetence rather than shenanigans. They successfully moved everyone’s follows to the new accounts, then either someone screwed up, or an order came down to set us to follow the old accounts again.

It is possible that Trump got pissed when the @potus followers went away and demanded them back. I hope we hear about it if that was the case.

I had the same thing happen just a few minutes ago when I logged on here. Not my phone, but with my laptop. It was like the site only loaded the text and nothing else with it. A refresh fixed it.

Not sure how it got that way. All page elements were in a much more primitive arrangement, much as for a first generation browser. Subsequently, however, when I try reproducing that state, the page would usually revert automatically to http (no s).

I’ve just tried manually tweeking the url to match the above, altho the site now continues to display normally. I’ve even previewed this comment. Twice. Display remains normal ,now. But if I refresh the page, the url reverts to h t t p :

However, when I posted my #204, the whole lgf page resembled what was shown in comment #222 rhuarc.

Bice: Sheriff Clarke vies to be bully in chief

David A. Clarke Jr. may have all but abandoned his job as Milwaukee County sheriff.

But he is earning himself a new title: Bully in chief.

Just listen to Clarke’s remarks on bipartisanship at Thursday night’s DeploraBall, a gathering of President Donald Trump supporters at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The celebratory ball had garnered media attention and protesters because some political extremists were expected to attend the event, which was jokingly named after Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” statement.

“When Donald Trump actually takes that oath and is sworn in as the 45th president of the United States, the real fighting starts,” Clarke said in a video posted by the Daily Caller. “I’ll tell you what — you may know me, you may not — I’m one of those bare-knuckle fighters.

“When I hear people say that we need to reach across the aisle and work with people, with the Democrats, you know what I say? The only reason I’ll be reaching across the aisle is to grab one of them by the throat,” Clarke said to raucous cheers and fist-pumping. “And remind them that the American people, you, have spoken, and you said you wanted Donald Trump to be the next president of the United States.”

“The American people,” to the tune of 3 million votes, voted for Trump’s opponent. In most of the states that he flipped, he actually underperformed when compared to Willard in 2012. The only reason he won the EC is because Hillary lost more votes in those states than he did.

The gaslighting of America continues apace.

More like the French Third Republic, in fact.

And another article, from The Independent.

Trump posed as the champion of “the forgotten men and women of America” on the campaign stump and did not take much money from Wall Street, certainly relative to previous Republican candidates. He paraded himself as the worst nightmare of the corrupt big money lobby.

But it was a con. Since vanquishing Hillary Clinton in November’s election Trump has, in fact, been the financial lobby’s wet dream. He has packed his administration and senior advisory team with former Wall Street financiers, many of them from Goldman Sachs.

And they have not disguised their agenda. Trump’s Wall Street picks have talked about deregulating derivative trading, allowing investment banks to make big bets with their own money again, allowing investments in hedge funds, reducing capital and liquidity requirements and dismantling the ability of regulators to supervise the sprawling shadow banking system. It is as if 2008 never happened.

They didn’t even wait 24 hours.

Decent Christians must be mortified when they see this sort of crap. I honestly don’t see how they imagine they’re any different/better than assholes like Anjem Choudary—it’s the same nasty, intolerant shit, just a different religion.

Decent Christians get a pass in our nation: Generally the actions of a few do not mean the entire faith is maligned. (I guess that goes with being a majority.)

They also get the “He is not representative of our religion” pass that others don’t. See the Charleston church shooter, the Oklahoma City bomber, the Atlanta Olympics bomber, the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooter, veteran church pickets by a certain Wichita church, &c &c. They are all no true Scotsmen.

And aren’t conservatives (and I guarantee you these guys are conservatives) always whinging liberals don’t have jobs when they are protesting? Don’t these fine representatives of Christianity and the master race have something better to do?

re: #66 HappyWarrior

Right. it’s frustrating. You’d think this guy as a military member while he may disagree with what’s being protested would understand that free speech is free speech.

I never had an issue with free speech in or out of the Navy. I don’t get that sort of attitude. Maybe that was because I paid attention in Government class in high school. (Government was what my school called Civics.)

re: #37 William Lewis

Yet another reason to give a big index finger to Twitter and never use their “service”.

We’ve discussed this before, Charles and I appreciate that we disagree.

But Twitter is no longer worth it, if it ever was. They’ve decided they can make more money by being quislings to the incoming regime.

I’ve made the same argument, as well as others, against having a Twitter account. I guess it boils down to whether you think the constant harassment, Pepe memes, abuse, rape threats, stalking, and such are worth it. Twitter is just technology, someone will always figure out a way to use technology for hatred (and claim you are the hater).

He even smirked when he said it, and I almost lost my shit. By the way, no other religion applied to his “test,” just Islam.

Atheists get a pass? What about us atheists who will stand up against harassment and discrimination of Muslims? I’ll bet if you dig a little deeper with this guy, only the “right” Christians get a pass. Mennonites? Catholics? Presbyterians?

Before I start stepping on marches around the globe, I’ll post my own.

It was an excellent day. I went with my sister down to the State Library in Melbourne and the steps up front were rapidly filling. There was alot of joyous energy. So many nasty women tees, a bunch of knitted pink caps and a smattering of Yankee expats with signs bearing their dismay at their homeland’s new president.

The place was soon packed with all sorts of folk. There were no-fooling Marxists milling about, canvassing for potential supporters, but you’ll always have that at such events.
I even picked up a leaflet from the Socialist Alternative; a group into which I was myself recruited in an antiwar march in 2005. That was a bit grating. And one of the speakers trucked in the kind of rhetoric I’ve come to despise.
Magical balance fairy-ism, with which most here are familiar.
One speaker was incredibly forceful and preached political inclusion and participation while not making a travesty of class consciousness. Still trying to figure out who she was.
The march got underway and it was a lovely experience. Chants and songs wafted down the column in mostly women’s voices. They sang ‘I will survive’ and cars honked their horns at us. Whether in solidarity or not, it was thrilling.

Then we assembled before the state Parliament.

And a chant of ‘Yes we can!’ Surged through us. I will admit to unabashedly joining in :)

I’ll add that the flags are at half-mast because a man with a history of domestic violence plowed his car into pedestrians a few blocks away, killing four.

If anything, it made the march even more important.

Over a couple of pints, my sister and I discussed anything and everything; energised by the demonstration.
We know America isn’t perfect. That many here sometimes regard it as a joke of obscene proportions.
But we know, as you do, that there is so much about your country that is not only worth preserving; but which continues to provide a template of liberally-minded action to the rest of the world.

Never give up hope.

PS. This is for Stanley :D

Went to the new White House Webpage again. Still mostly empty (which might be expected for a new Administration).

There is still no “proclamations” link. (I use that to track flag half-staff notices for my town.) We’ll have to see if they put such a link up. (My state uses its “Press Releases” link for state proclamations, so the White House may go that way with it - though wading through all of Mr. Trump’s press releases from Deadbart and SMOTI would require heavy drinking first.)

Propaganda proceeds apace:

According to the new White House Website, the murder rate in the District of Columbia has jumped 50%.

The Trump Administration is committed to reducing violent crime. In 2015, homicides increased by 17% in America’s fifty largest cities. That’s the largest increase in 25 years. In our nation’s capital, killings have risen by 50 percent. There were thousands of shootings in Chicago last year alone.

whitehouse.gov

They even got that wrong … the actual figure might have been more in tune with their idea of Dumpster-fire crime rates, which is 100% according to the DC Police Crime Data page.

mpdc.dc.gov

In 2015, there were three murders, in 2016 there were six (which is why percentages suck for tracking crime rates - in our little town of Angora - population one - they had a 100% murder rate last year).

That said, for all crime across the District, the violent crime rate was down 30%.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who was one of Donald Trump’s staunchest supporters during his presidential campaign, now wants to abolish the Congressional Budget Office because it keeps using facts to undercut the president-elect’s economic claims.

“The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) is simply incompatible with the Trump era,” Gingrich wrote on his personal blog on Friday. He then focused his complaint on CBO’s then-anticipated report on the impact of repealing the Affordable Care Act.

“It is a left-wing, corrupt, bureaucratic defender of big government and liberalism,” Gingrich wrote. “Its scoring of Obamacare was not just wrong, it was clearly corrupt. CBO literally brought in the architect of Obamacare to be the adviser on scoring the very Obamacare legislation that he helped write. The score was a lie. It was so wrong it was totally indefensible. A year later the CBO produced a new score that was so much more expensive that it was clear Obamacare would have been defeated if it had been the original score.”

I’ve met and known a couple of them over the years……they’ve always struck me as rather harmless cranks; I never noticed any suicidal ideation, but you never know. They may just be good at hiding it.

I try to avoid such people. As I recall, the Heaven’s Gate people didn’t start out with suicide as their goal either.

en.wikipedia.org

I was correct. They didn’t start that way, they started in the Seventies and didn’t commit suicide until the Nineties. They were started by the son of a Presbyterian minister.

Mrs. Lapin will be down at the march in DC along with five of her cousins who came in from out of town.

Wife and I were organizing a van lift to Panama City’s Dem Women’s march. The Weather Underground (the new one, not the original) says tornadoes and small craft warnings are pending, so we’ve decided to show at a local conciousness-raising session.
(That’s like a house-raising, but with more chatter and fewer hammers.)

Trump can’t go more than a few hours without lying, plagiarizing, or otherwise scamming people.

He takes the cake.

In fact, he literally stole the cake.

The cake on the left was made by Duff Goldman for Obama 4 years ago. The cake on the right wasn’t made by Duff, but was presented for Trump.

Then there’s the fact that he claims that he’s separated from his businesses. That too is a lie since change in business ownership or form requires filing papers to that end with the state of incorporation. That’s another lie, and goes to the Emoluments Clause (we’re going to get a lot of use out of that clause) violations.

Meanwhile, we’ve got right wingers cheering about that EO Trump issued regarding easing the burden of Obamacare. No one even knows what the hell that means. Not the GOP. Not Trump. Not even the CMS/HHS who have to follow those directives. It’s a meaningless statement. But the imagery matters, and he gets to claim that he’s acting. Never mind that it’s all smoke and mirrors.

371
Anymouse  Jan 21, 2017 • 6:21:16am

What it means is ease the burden on the wealthy.

Also, ease the burden of life on those who need the ACA to pay for things like medical care.

If they privatise the VA, I’m screwed. The pre-existing condition of epilepsy means I could never get insurance.

Belafon  Jan 21, 2017 • 6:31:52am

From the NYT public editor:

There is an unsettling theme that runs through The Times’s publishing decisions. In each instance, it was the actions of government officials that triggered newsroom decisions — not additional reporting or insight that journalists gained. On the server, once the F.B.I. signaled it had grown wary of its importance — without giving conclusive evidence as to why — the paper backed off. Weeks later, the Senate Democratic leader, Harry Reid, publicly admonished the F.B.I. for being secretive about its probe of Trump. That gave The Times cover to write what it knew about the bureau’s investigation into the bank server.

It was the same pattern on the dossier. Only after learning from CNN that Trump and President Obama had been briefed on the document did The Times publish what it had known for months. Its confidence in the material had not changed, nor did its editors know whether the top level briefing meant the government believed the information was true. But the briefing became justifiable cause to publish.

In this cat-and-mouse game between government and press, the government won.

New hashtags to consider given Trump and GOP actions:

#GOPDontCare - that’s my favorite to both describe the GOP actions to replace Obamacare, but extends to the consequences of all their actions and how it shifts burdens to those are least able to endure them.

#TrumpSoPetty - this describes what Trump does in retaliation for those who report facts and logic on him. Attack and bully.

Essentially shutting down NPS Twitter is epitome of #TrumpSoPetty. Reporting crowd size and current conditions is something Twitter is designed to do - quick and easy to disseminate. But since those facts are not good for Trump, he shut it down.

What a petty asshat.

And even if you compare Trump’s turnout to Bush’s it still falls short. Or Reagan. Or GHWB. He just can’t stand fact people not only didn’t turn out, but actively shunned him. It’s all downhill from there for him, and I fear for the nation as the GOP moves to undo decades of social progress.

There is a woman who lives in my village that, with her and her husband, used to own a monumental ranch in the Sandhills north of town.

Then he got cancer. He eventually died from it, but the medical bills stacked up so high that they lost their ranch to pay the bills.

They moved into a small house (even smaller than mine), living on Social Security.

Now it would appear that the GOP is after Medicare and Social Security, which would take the last of her income, such as it is.

I don’t know what to say to her about all this stuff her beloved party has done to her. My wife and I supported her through the loss of her husband, and helped out after his death with such things as cleaning.

She fell prey to the magic balance fairy argument of “both sides do it” and is no longer interested in things like voting.

The GOP has actively turned its back on the General Welfare of the citizens of the United States. You know, Article 1, Section 8 - the General Welfare clause.

They’d rather slash and burn the safety net, gut Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid leaving people with no options other than medically induced bankruptcy when they come upon serious medical conditions. HSAs can’t take the place of the programs the GOP is intent on smashing and grabbing so that the rich get bigger tax breaks.

Insurance across state lines wont solve matters either. The GOP don’t care.

All those people who voted for Trump because they wanted someone who wasn’t a politician will be screwed - we’re already seeing it as Trump trashes the PMI benefit through an EO.

It’s all downhill from there.

And that’s a big problem here, with no inexpensive internet, only hate radio, a conservative newspaper, and no television service (or if you can get it, FOX).

We already live in a propaganda-controlled media environment here, and y’all who live in cities and such are about to see what that is like as well. When media outlets like the New York Times or NBC trade in their journalist credentials to be stenographers working alongside Deadbart and Roger (polonium-poisoned) Stone (but he got better).

One of the reasons I never paid people like Mr. Johnson here until recently for the service they provide is because more than 5% of my meager VA cheque goes just to pay for Internet service (not counting the additional money I have to pay for a phone to support that too). Another significant fraction goes for magazine subscriptions to try to get news not printed in my regional paper.

Ana Navarro? I disagree with her on probably most issues. I don’t think she’s a racist. And yes George W. Bush for all my faults with him and man I have a lot, I don’t think is a racist. Trump? Trump can’t go more than a few hours without lying, plagiarizing, or otherwise scamming people.

He takes the cake.

In fact, he literally stole the cake.

At least Obama’s cake is straight and upright. The top three layers on Trump’s cake are falling over. The proportions are shit.

And their response when the GOP Congress and Trump start to repeal the Affordable Care Act after spending seven and two years, respectively, promising to do exactly that? “Oh, they wouldn’t do that to ME.”

re: #448 Anymouse

With one caveat: it’s all over social media, attracting the youngest people.

Same with @teenvogue. The future of media consumption is ultimately not in the alphabet networks but in social media and the internet. It’s a double-edged sword because of the RWNJs embracing propaganda like Breitbart, SMOTI and Alex Jones, and retweet and share their lies unironically. But that’s not to say all is lost; Teen Vogue will no doubt inspire other outlets and channels to be as courageous and strong as they are.

Moreover, a propaganda outfit like Fox — whose median age of viewership is in the late 60s — wouldn’t take the coverage seriously to begin with. Example: Tucker acting like a sexist pig towards Lauren Duca.

The sooner we turn off the news networks and cancel our cable subscriptions, the better off we’ll be… except for literal twilight zones like Anymouse’s corner of Nebraska… 😕

You might try asking how they will measure Trump’s success or failure-and what the time frame is.
For example, do they expect to see a 10% increase in well paying manufacturing and mining jobs in the next year?
Will there be a significant outlay on infrastructure improvements begun within the next 6 to 8 months? If so, will these be funded by government or be privately funded with the extra expenses to users that it entails. Will people in sparsely populated areas have to do without since there aren’t enough users to pay for improvements and turn a profit?

These are things I really want to know, but since I’m not on much in the way of social media and live in a deep blue area, I don’t have a lot of people to ask.

I posted a single response: “Doesn’t matter what the excuse is. Trump’s going to be a disaster anyway.” and then it all started downhill from there. GQ Magazine in the United Kingdom with some first class snark on Inauguration fashion yesterday …

gq-magazine.co.uk (more at the link)

It’s happened. It has. There’s no denying it. While the inauguration of Donald Trump may not have attracted a star-studded line-up - barely even a queue, to be honest - there was still plenty to feast your eyes upon. They say that we express ourselves through our clothes, and what we choose to wear when we know the world is watching is perhaps the most telling of all. While I didn’t get an invite to the big event, and my style credentials are shaky to say the least, I’ve always dreamed of pirouetting down a red carpet hollering “Who are you wearing?!” at people in expensive evening-wear. Allow me, then, to weigh up the threads of some of the higher profile attendees at what was basically the gateway drug to the apocalypse.

Trump could’ve sashayed into his inauguration in a wet-look cardigan, ra-ra skirt and silver platforms and his science-defying hair and Fanta-inspired phizzog would still be the most out-there thing going on. When the orange mist had cleared, it was comforting to see that even as president, he was determined to wear his tie ten feet long as usual. What’s he hiding behind it? Bratwurst for the inauguration ball?

Let’s be real, Obama could look stylish in a bin bag, and if he’d opened the door of the White House in one, it may well have been a fitting comment on his successor. Dignified, authoritative, statesmanly chic as ever from Barack.

Hey BeachDem though, a friend of mine posted something on Facebook about Tulsi Gabbard visiting Syria without the knowledge of the Dem leadership in Congress. Man we dodged a bullet with her. If Bernie had won the nomination, she would have been rewarded simply because she supported him. She really is a Democrat I’m not fond of and I hope she’s primaried next year. It’s got nothing to do with her support of Sanders. I’m for Keith Ellison, Jeff Markley, and a lot of the other Dems that supported Bernie remaining but Gabbard is awful.

What really pisses me off though and I like Keith Ellison mind you but I hate seeing Tom Perez smeared as a “neo-lib” simply because he supported Clinton. I want people to get their jobs on their merits not whether they supported Sanders or not. It seems to me the only reason why the Bros are pushing Ellison is his support of Sanders and by extension to them that makes Perez bad. Really if I could go a lifetime with never hearing “Neo-lib” again, I’d be happy. I’m a proud pragmatic center left Dem. I value reality and I don’t think we need a “revolution” to make our country a better place.

I feel good about New Jersey. Virginia, it honestly will depend on turnout and who the Republicans nominate. I personally think the deplorables are going to feel emboldened by Trump and nominate Corey Stewart. Timothy, what do you think? Yeah I remember that too. For a movement that insists it’s about “us”, that movement became very cult of personality for me since their litmus tests have become about whether someone or something meets Bernie’s approval. I confess, I wasn’t happy when Obama made Clinton his SOS but I conceded A) He knows a hell of a lot more than I do and B) She deserved a chance to prove herself.

I wrote on this earlier, but when you live out in the countryside, it is easy to feel and see yourself as a Jeffersonian gentle(wo)man farmer, self-sufficient and completely free to enter into contracts and agreements that benefit you and your family.

It is easy to believe that you need no government, especially a federal one, impinging on your freedom to make decisions.

And we are sold on the notion that “personal freedom” means the right to negotiate (as individuals or families with limited assets and incomes) with multi-million-dollar national (or even international) corporations for terms of employment, insurance coverage or financial services.

FFS, MSNBC, can you please cut away from this farce at the National Cathedral?

Face it. MSNBC is no longer the MSNBC it was a year or so ago. Comcast bought it and bought in to the FOX model, only a bit lighter in that they want to act like they are equal. But equal means what brings in the money.

I’m in the process of weaning myself from any of its general news coverage. I still watch a little Rachel and some Lawrence and Chris Hayes. Can’t handle Chuck “Clueless” Todd at all on MSNBC. I may catch a little Meat The Chuck due to guest, but ignore Chuck and his stupid both sides panels.

There is still a need to see what the New Nazi Party has to “say” about their positions.

Looks like a great time for the internet to make a big jump into the news business. I think they could put a big hurt to TV news. There is a huge opening. And sites like this and some others are going to be needed like never before.

Yeah it is. The primary really throws things into a wrench. If it were convention, I’d say Stewart. I am still undecided who I’m going to vote for between Periello and Norham on the Democratic side. I really like Tom’s passion though I wish he had announced he was running earlier but I am glad that we may get some discussion too. I keep remembering how pissed off I was with the after-election protesters who didn’t bother to vote. “Yeah guys, we could have used that energy a couple months ago,” was my thought.

But I know a lot of people out there protesting today did vote and contribute to the campaign. I saw on Facebook two of the organizers from the Clinton campaign who I worked with are out protesting.

EDIT: And I’d normally discount the balls-ass stupid attempt to apply “alpha male” to human society, except for the fact that we have a cultural system that rewards those who bluster and label themselves “alpha males” by letting them fail upwards just on the label alone, despite the only thing ‘alpha male” about them is their sheer blinding hatred toward women and non-“alphas”.

Trump’s @POTUS Twitter account used Obama crowd image

What’s interesting, and relevant to this thread, is the following text in this story:

Mr Trump’s @POTUS account has gained millions of followers since its launch, as all 13.6m followers of Barack Obama’s account - now archived at @POTUS44 - are in the process of being ported over to the new Trump account.

Unfortunately, like I said above, we have a cultural system that rewards the assholes that call themselves “alpha males” and enable them to constantly fail upward despite being natural failures at being actual “alphas” in the way zoologists would bother with the term.

So work to shatter the system. It needs to be relentless, incremental and proactive.

Rep. John Lewis has a bit of experience with that, no? 🙂

re: #557 HappyWarrior

Yeah it is. The primary really throws things into a wrench. If it were convention, I’d say Stewart. I am still undecided who I’m going to vote for between Periello and Norham on the Democratic side. I really like Tom’s passion though I wish he had announced he was running earlier but I am glad that we may get some discussion too. I have so much respect for Periello for voting for ACA as a congressman and then not running away from it. He did lose re-election in 2010 but he didn’t do it like a coward either.

I don’t dislike Periello, but he’s an one-term Congressman running for Governor, versus Northam who is a current Lieutenant Governor who was also a State Senator for six years.

Govenors in Virginia aren’t all powerful (something T-Mac took awhile to discover) and you do have to work with the General Assembly if you want to get anything accomplished and Northam has a lot more experience with that.

I do have problem with Northam but they’re more style problems than anything else. I was complaining on Facebook the other day about how he keeps showing up to events in his lab coat. Okay, we get you’re a doctor but that comes off as incredibly pretentious to me.

Yup, flipping this district or even becoming competitive here is a long haul, not a weekend jaunt. The trick is to get younger people than me to think about these things - at fifty-six I doubt I will see Nebraska turn blue (but you never know).

My whole town has been really quiet about Donald Trump since it seems to have dawned on a lot of people they might have been scammed. No one has mentioned a word to me about him. Nada.

Seems like a decent barometer. Funny thing…he hasn’t even gotten started and they are acting wobbly. That shows they were all that sure when they voted. I guess you can call whats coming a fast lesson.

I wish I were wrong, but I fully expect him to have a few tricks up his sleeve - economic sleight-of-hand ones that will make him very popular with a lot of people, if only for at least a few years…the cracks might start to show before 2020, but not enough to cost him re-election, especially if the press is even half as fawning over him as it was in 2016…

The problem is, will it make them actually reflect enough to adjust their voting habits in the future, or will they revert to the norm and keep deciding that no matter how provably destructive and dangerous the GOP is, the Dems by definition must be even worse because, well, they’re Democrats?

That seems to have been one of the stories of this election, where no matter how abominable the GOP offerings could get, you still had Good Germans fall back into line because heaven forbid you ever give a Dem a vote or praise.

The fatal flaw in that theory is … Trump himself. This would imply that he either moderates his exceptionally acidic and divisive tone, or turns heel against the GOP.

As long as he employs Steve Bannon, that ain’t happening. He’s pretty much locked in with the wingnut base and GOP allies Axis, and won’t really be able to prop up his approval numbers until polling firms fix the polls deliberately.

Whatever else you can say about him, he knows how to manipulate media and people, he knows how to create the image of wealth and success where there is none.

If he and his surrogates can pull off two or three years of smoke and mirrors with the US economy, he will make a lot of friends, people who are more than willing to delude themselves to believing him, and that could keep him in office past 2020.

We would also have to assume that the Democrats are going to get their act together and field a viable candidate with a solid platform by 2020. And win by more than 3 million votes: votes in the “right” places.

Fox News (State Television): No tweets or videos of Millions marching against Trump Presidency. This is like 1984 Kremlin.

I recall watching East German TV coverage of the Tianamen Square riots. They never showed any banners or posters indicating what the people were protesting, and when we saw crowds chanting, it was voiced over by a commentator explaining that these people were dangerous counter-revolutionaries.

None of the stations in Scottsbluff or Cheyenne have anything at all about the Women’s March in Washington (All Trump, All the Time,) except for FOX 42 in Scottsbluff.
fox42kptm.com (with video link)

They still had to stick a dig in with the headline versus the link: Women Descend on DC to Push Back Against New President

The link says Women Descend on DC a Day after Anarchist Create Chaos

The local (well too far for me) FOX station seems to play the article straight (drawing from AP as a source)

The marches in Lincoln and Omaha have not started yet. No mention of them on Omaha or Lincoln stations.

You are correct. It comes to degrees. I am going on those that are on the fence, those that voted for Trump because of their hatred of typical establishment politicians. Those that held their noses.

You can’t change the wingnut. But the wingnut is not the majority.

Trump will most likely prove that the big business man promising jobs and new wealth for the common man was a lie and maybe put paid to that BS about needing someone outside the government. those 107,000 people in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania voted for the hope for jobs…they caused Hillary to lose.

So, next election it will be back looking for smart people that understand government. And the fence sitters need to be sold…now.

Today’s demonstrations are a good start. It might even get some wingnut women to reconsider. If they can get away from the alpha-males!

Okay…plaster time! Later…
