Reposted from downstairs:

Just emailed my contacts at the national battlefield, since I am the unit coordinator for the re-enactment coming up. How the hell are we supposed to put on a re-enactment when the national park service cannot communicate with the pubic and with the units coming to participate?

Okay as far as the claim about this being normal in new administrations. I saw plenty of press releases from the DOA in the early months of the Obama admin. Maybe I should be looking for something else but this strikes me as a lie because even in transition, the agencies still need to update people who depend on that agency with relevant news.

(Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

We’re supposed to get a minor snowfall tonight into tomorrow, which is, predictably, going to sour my work day tomorrow. Alas, poor Yorick. Nevertheless, everything else is going okay - and especially now that I hear that wesearchr got the boot from Twitter. Anyone know if that is permanent? I admit I did not read through the comments of the article, merely scanned the headlines. (TL;DR)

The only thing here that surprises me is this ridiculous stupidity of Congressional Democrats voting for the likes of Ben Carson as a nominee.

Ben Carson is a Republican. Republicans are pathological liars. Therefore everything Carson has said at his nomination hearings is lies and can’t be relied on for anything. So WTF is up with otherwise sensible people, like Senator Warren, voting for this garbage?

Here’s a delightful bit of news. dailykos.com

The White House is installing senior aides atop major federal agencies to shadow the administration’s Cabinet secretaries, creating a direct line with loyalists who can monitor and shape White House goals across the federal bureaucracy.

The arrangement, described by four people involved in the transition planning, appears designed to help the White House maintain control over its priorities despite pledging to give Cabinet secretaries unusual autonomy. Having senior advisers reporting to both the agency chiefs and the White House could spur early tensions and create conflicts with that pledge of autonomy.

“They want to keep kind of a West Wing-infused attachment to the agencies,” said a person familiar with the arrangement. “There will be tentacles from the White House to these agencies. … The effort is to demonstrate that all points lead back to certain people,” such as Donald Trump’s son-in-law, White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, or chief of staff Reince Priebus.

As I recall, political officers were used in Soviet bureaucracies in order to enforce ideological discipline.

The GOP is intending to gut the Wilderness Act, undermine the national park system, and open up millions of acres to development and mining so that a privileged few can profit while everyone else chokes on the consequences.

Oh, and undermining the national park system has real consequences - millions of jobs and hundreds of billions of dollars in economic activity are tied to the parks.

The GOP wants to strip federal control over land in the West, despite those counties with federal lands doing better than similarly situated non-federal land counties.

#GOPDontCare. This is about gutting everything that works in government for its own sake. It’s sabotaging government for personal profit. It’s kakistocracy. It’s a kleptocracy.

She skates with them better than I do with skater shoes. My one brother and one of my good friends were skaters when we were younger but being clumsy I could never do it.

When I was a kid, I held a rope pulled by my brother on his bike, as I laid on my stomach on a little skateboard with steel wheels. (I’m old) The guy who first got skateboards into Big5 and swimming pools in California lives here now.

Well, that was…terrifying.

I was driving home from work going east on the 202 in Tempe, AZ when a car (Saturn Ion) ricocheted across four or five lanes of traffic, hit two vehicles in the HOV lane, then bounced back to the right side of the freeway, just in front of me and one lane over to the right. I don’t even remember braking, but I stopped short of this car. No damage to me or my vehicle, except to my nerves. The Ion was totaled, as was one of the other vehicles. The other, an SUV, was damaged on its right side. Amazingly, there was a woman with a yellow hazard bar on top of her sedan next to me. She flipped it on, got out of her vehicle and went to check on the Ion. I decided at that point I probably should just drive on and get out of the way of what was likely to be a messy accident scene.

I’m going to lay down now.

You know what bothers me, it isn’t the crowd size lies. It’s the goddamned scam that the Administration is pulling on the nation gutting every social policy and piece of social progress over the past 50 years.

Environmental protections? Pick the guy who wants to gut environmental regs.
Financial protections? Pick the people who are not only from Goldman Sachs (and they’re here to help themselves) but are pushing anti-employee policies.
Voting and civil rights? Yeah, they’re under assault too.

But yeah, we’ve got ourselves a bunch of eggs wondering what progress… I have to wonder if progress got lost in the English-Russian translator.

I realize that the Democrats were facing a two-front war in 2016: first an attempt at a takeover from an independent outsider, and then they had to do a quick about-face to deal with the GOP, which had been taking great advantage of that takeover war to engage in some weapons-grade ratfucking.

I also really don’t like that our future isn’t being made into whether one supported Sanders or Clinton. Take the DNC chair battle, Ellison, whom I like supported Sanders and Perez, whom I also like supported Clinton. Whoever replaces DWS as Party Chair should be selected on their own merits no who they supported in the primaries. Personally, I lean Perez, I think he’s probably a bit more ready for it than Ellison but I wouldn’t object to eitehr.

This is why it pisses me off to read of Congressional Democrats providing any votes for Trump’s cabinet. I can’t think of any of them that are worth giving Republicans bipartisan cover for. Republicans need to own their shit.

This is not normal. At all.

Agree. So, how do we not get played and yet still be accurate? I don’t mind telling everyone that Trump is trying to turn us into an authoritarian state, which I did today, at work, with a guy who is right of center (he studied to be a minister and then decided that he didn’t like the evangelical take on things). But we still have to deal with it as it’s playing out.

The coworker is worried about what Trump, and Republicans for that matter, are doing.

Ben Carson is a Republican. Republicans are pathological liars. Therefore everything Carson has said at his nomination hearings is lies and can’t be relied on for anything. So WTF is up with otherwise sensible people, like Senator Warren, voting for this garbage?

Not just Warren, either. Every fucking Dem on that committee. Make me want to puke.

It’s not necessarily terrible if they vote to approve a few of the nominees — even some who are incompetent. Otherwise, their votes would all be attacked as obstructionism and ignored. However, if they actually stand together against the really heinous nominees — which consists of most of them — they could gain support, that they are really not rejecting nominees just to reject them but that they have serious and thoughtful objections. Perhaps that could give them the ability to attract a couple from the other side to prevent approval. I’m grasping at straws here.

Congressional Republicans are the scum of the earth and have absolutely no shame. Therefore it is pointless for Democrats to pick and choose between normal awful Republican shit and especially awful Republican shit. All of it should be opposed. No possible Republican defections from the worst of their shit (which are extremely unlikely anyway) will depend on score-keeping of prior votes by Democrats.

If a miracle happens and a Republican nominee or proposal is useful, then Democrats can vote for it and explain why.

This is part of why Democrats lose too often. If one is going to run vs. Republicans, voting against them routinely is a prerequisite.

That tractor trailer driver is mighty lucky.

I was hearing that the gates were stuck/frozen in upright position, though after the crash it looks like they finally came down. My guess is that the sensor that trips the gates to come down got stuck so the gates didn’t come down warning the drivers of the oncoming train.

re: #191 Hecuba’s daughter

It’s not necessarily terrible if they vote to approve a few of the nominees — even some who are incompetent. Otherwise, their votes would all be attacked as obstructionism and ignored. However, if they actually stand together against the really heinous nominees — which consists of most of them — they could gain support, that they are really not rejecting nominees just to reject them but that they have serious and thoughtful objections. Perhaps that could give them the ability to attract a couple from the other side to prevent approval. I’m grasping at straws here.

In theory, that may be true, but for Ben Carson, who has no experience whatsoever to lead HUD, and who, the week before his appointment, said himself that he did not have the experience or background to lead a federal bureaucracy—for this moron to receive total support in committee is really pathetic.

Yeah, there are worse (Betsy DeVos, the thing of which nightmares are made and others) but Carson is pretty damn bad to have not had one Dem on the committee vote against him.

re: #237 Charles Johnson

Has any president ever signed this many executive orders immediately after taking office? Trump is governing by fiat.

President Obama signed 5 executive orders by January 22, 2009. Three of them (all signed on the 22nd) had to do with Gitmo.

Clinton signed 2 within his first week as president. GW Bush didn’t sign his first executive order until January 29, 2001, when he signed 2. GHW Bush signed one five days after his inauguration and didn’t sign another one until February 29, 1989. Reagan signed 2 executive orders within the first ten days of his administration.

That’s as far back as I looked.

Also, Trump seems to be calling many of these “executive memorandums”, which none of his predecessors listed above have done.

There are two forms of international law: treaty; and customary. Treaties are essentially contracts between two or more governments - we know how Trump feels about honoring contracts, so other countries should be concerned. Customary international law is basically tradition - it’s law because that’s how we’ve done things for centuries. It’s also fairly clear that Trump doesn’t care much about tradition or custom.

For all their faults, the leadership in China at least understands how these things work and understand the advantages of using them to realign the world order in their favor.

Many of you are aware that I’m a retired Federal employee. I’ve been through many election year changes. Yes, it’s very common to have a hiring freeze ordered by the new administration as the work to staff the political appointments begins. Once the top positions are filled, hiring restrictions are reduced as the new top managers get a handle on their program and responsibilities. Usually within a month or so the agencies get authority to begin filling vacancies at the lower or entry levels.

For example, right now the wild-land fire-fighting agencies are beginning to advertise their fire-fighter positions. Some are permanent full time jobs while most are for seasonal positions. These advertisements will still be issued but selection of individuals will be delayed until authority is delegated downward for hiring. What makes it tough for the agencies is that it can take from 3 to 6 months from the advertising the job until the new employee walks through the door. So every 4 years it becomes a scramble to get the fire-fighters hired before the fire season begins.

The restrictions on agency communications have never been this sever. Normally the day to day info has never been cut off. Makes me wonder if the National Weather Service will stop issuing daily forecasts and sever storm warnings. Usually agencies are required to not issue major new decisions such as signing a Record of Decision on a NEPA EIS until the new administration has reviewed the decision and give their stamp of approval. One of the reasons many NEPA decisions are issued before the old administration leaves Washington.

This proposal to have political commissars in each agency is very troubling. Actually it scares the hell out of me. This is nothing but pure communism. What American would want to be in a position where a political over seer watches over your shoulder?

I also really don’t like that our future isn’t being made into whether one supported Sanders or Clinton. Take the DNC chair battle, Ellison, whom I like supported Sanders and Perez, whom I also like supported Clinton. Whoever replaces DWS as Party Chair should be selected on their own merits no who they supported in the primaries. Personally, I lean Perez, I think he’s probably a bit more ready for it than Ellison but I wouldn’t object to eitehr.

South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg seems to be gaining some attention.

He has some fresh ideas…one being he wants to set a Democratic agenda that has zero to do with answering Republicans. He wants a platform and candidates that do what is needed and if it is purely progressive/liberal and isn’t “middle” to please a conservative do it anyway.

Sounds like he wants to go for clear separation and not worry what anyone but the voters will think.

Haven’t heard about him. Sounds interesting. I’m interested in hearing what they have to say about local efforts. I believe in building up a competitive party from the ground up.

In general, we are not supposed to demonize entire groups of people; you shouldn’t blame an innocent person for evil committed by others in the group. But that rule doesn’t apply to all groups: there aren’t “good” Nazis or “good” members of the KKK. My question is: have we reached that point with Republicans? Should they all be held responsible for what any member says or does?

re: #286 LastYearsMan

You know what amazes me? Not that Trump and the GOP can act like such a bunch of utter fuckfaces. It’s that so many Americans vote for them. In huge numbers, year after year, allowing them to undermine and corrupt the basic democratic structures that make your country work. And they weren’t even subtle about it.

This shouldn’t be some 51%-49% just-squeaked-by thing. Republicans should be getting trounced 80%-20% or so (after all, there will always be some assholes out there). I’m no fan of the Democrats, but this shouldn’t be close. I utterly do not understand it.

The Democrats haven’t had a 24/7 TV and radio propaganda machine working for them for the last 25 years like the GOP has.”

All true- additionally, the 30+year effort to dumb-down education-particualry critical thinking skills- is making its mark, bigly…:((
