Donald Trump’s Muslim Immigration Ban Starts Tomorrow, by Fiat

Here comes fascism
Politics • Views: 46,765

During his campaign, Donald Trump played the media over and over by making an outrageous statement, walking it back, making the outrageous statement again, walking it back again, etc. etc. ad nauseam.

And one of the insane policy ideas he played this game with was his ban on immigration from Muslim countries. Over and over we saw the press dutifully report that he really didn’t mean it, he was pivoting, moving toward the center, etc. etc. ad nauseam.

Well — he did mean it, and he wasn’t pivoting or moving toward the center, and the Muslim immigration ban starts tomorrow. And he’s doing it by executive order, so he won’t have to deal with that pesky Congress.

U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to sign several executive orders on Wednesday restricting immigration from Syria and six other Middle Eastern or African countries, according to several congressional aides and immigration experts briefed on the matter.

In addition to Syria, Trump’s orders are expected to temporarily restrict access to the United States for most refugees. Another order will block visas from being issued to those from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, said the aides and experts, who asked not to be identified.

The restrictions on refugees are likely to include a multi-month ban on admissions from all countries until the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security can make the vetting process more rigorous.

Has any president ever signed this many executive orders immediately after taking office? Trump is governing by fiat. And the United States is very rapidly becoming an authoritarian state ruled by an egomaniacal despot.

UPDATE at 1/24/17 7:06:15 pm by Charles Johnson

And that’s not all. Tomorrow the tiny-fingered fascist will also authorize federal funds to go toward the construction of the Mexican border wall he promised Mexico would pay for.

WASHINGTON — President Trump will order the construction of a Mexican border wall on Wednesday, White House officials said, and is mulling plans to stop Syrian refugees from entering the country and to slash immigration of refugees from “terror prone” nations, perhaps as early as this week.

During an appearance at the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday, Mr. Trump plans to sign an executive order to direct federal funds to be shifted toward the building of a wall on the southern border that became a signature promise of his campaign.

Remember when Obama was so awful for “all” the executive orders he issued. This is something that really saddens me on a personal level too.

For the record: Yes, Drumpf has signed a remarkable number of executive orders to start his reign of terror. However, the trend usually falls off, as the most recent Presidents have all signed a handful of EO’s at the beginning (I believe lawhawk pointed this out downstairs). If he sustains this level of output over the next couple of days or a week, then yes, it’s time to hit the panic button.

I’m reminded that during the anarchist scare in the 20’s that Trump’s ideological ancestors tried to outright ban people from Eastern European from coming to this country. My mom’s maternal grandmother came to this country in 1921. Had they gotten their way, I wouldn’t be here today.

Hell, for that matter, let’s talk about the Irish. Everybody forgets about the Irish because they’re white, but if they could’ve signed away my family’s immigration rights, there were a lot of people back then that would’ve put their names to that paper gladly.

I fully expect Donald Trump to have a Republican congress pass Enabling Acts to give him broad powers to issue edicts, all in the name of not encumbering the legislative branch with what he would describe as menial tasks.

Ugh, this makes me so fucking angry. Now the Muslim women and homosexuals in the region which the right-wing likes to conveniently champion to discredit their liberal opponents won’t be allowed to seek refuge here. That’s how you help Muslim women, by denying them access here…kind of like denying women access to birth control.

Yep I’m of Irish descent too so I know all about that. It really pisses me off when I see people proud of their Irish heritage engage in the same xenophobia that happened to our ancestors. My third great grandmother never learned a lick of English in this country. That didn’t make her less American.

For real. Remember, it didn’t take long before China went from becoming a trusted ally of America during World War 2 to becoming the enemy within a year or two’s time.

I remember Arthur Chu’s piece in Salon in the wake of “clockgate” and this excerpt stood out for me:

Those were Japanese-Americans. I’m a Chinese-American. During World War II Chinese-Americans cheered on the internment and benefited from it-the fact that China and Korea were the US’s allies in the Pacific Theatre gave us a PR boost, got the longstanding, honestly-named Chinese Exclusion Act revoked, even briefly got us a Chinese-American superhero. American propagandists hastily constructed a set of stereotypes to explain how dastardly, untrustworthy Japanese-Americans were totally different from the industrious, loyal Chinese- and Korean-Americans they happened to resemble.

But history happens fast.

After the war, the Chinese Civil War re-ignited in 1946 and in 1949 and China “fell” to the communists, which caused all people of Chinese ancestry to instantly go from “our friends” to “our enemies,” and the formerly hated nation of Japan flipped over in the popular imagination to be our stalwart ally against the Red Menace.

IMO they absolutely have. The entire Republican party is rotten to the core, and Trump is the best evidence of this. Trump won the GOP primary by appealing to the very worst in human nature, and this success was predicated on decades of Republican propaganda stoking the irrational resentments of Republican primary voters.

In the general election, a great majority of Republicans fell in line for Trump, despite Trump’s incompetence and psychosis being blatantly on display during the entire campaign.

Everything he is saying, doing, signing - it’s all designed to insulate him from ever possibly being wrong, or having to admit a mistake. Literally this entire week has been about ensuring that his ego remains intact, and I suspect the rest of the four years will be the same. If I were in charge of Democratic party strategy for this, I’d require Republicans in the House to come up with the votes to impeach in exchange for Senate Democrats providing just enough Senate votes to convict if Senate Republicans vote unanimously to convict.

I’m of the belief that his whole means of governance is going to be through EOs. The guy doesn’t have the attention span, patience, or knowledge to do things the right way.

Eisenhower federalized the Alabama National Guard during the Little Rock Nine integration.

Okay, here’s my guess as a law clerk. I imagine he can tell the immigration agencies to forbid any visas for people from the above mentioned countries. When Iranians for example go to get a visa to come to our country, they don’t go to Iran. They go Armenia typically or maybe Turkey. What’s really maddening as I got at in my number 2 though is the process for many of these applications have already begun.

Can’t help but to think the Iranian Islamophobes in LA and Orange County sealed their own fate by voting in Trump enthusiastically.

Now it’s coming back to bite them as they won’t be able to sponsor relatives fleeing the theocratic dictatorship.

The damage from this incredible farce of a Presidency is going to last for a long time. Hey dude, sorry about the loss of a colleague today. Sad day for skiing.

We’ve had two close calls in the last few weeks. One patroller survived thanks to the airbags they now wear. 5ft crown sucked him off his anchor tree. Another guy told me he was ski-cutting a slope and a 2ft crown pulled him in but he stayed on top.

We’ve had over 23 feet of snowfall in January. There was a car on Highway 89 that got buried yesterday by a natural release. Guys were fine - knew their shit. Shut the car off so they didn’t carbon-monoxide themselves and wrapped up and waited.

Patroller deaths always hit us hard though regardless of the cause.

Ike should have just ran as a Democrat in ‘52 and let the GOP implode on itself. If the were going to be stupid enough to nominate MacArthur or Taft, he should have let them.

I don’t think that would have made much difference. It might have kept the John Birchers at bay - back then Republicans were fairly liberal on the social side. It wasn’t until after the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts passed that they started the SoCon (and rather racist) Southern Strategy to get Dixiecrats to cross over.

Except there’s no one stopping the enforcement of federal laws in Chicago, the Governor would probably have the authority to sue, the question would be whether a court would want to intervene (and, of course, whether Trump would follow any court decision).

And, historically, Congress has been pretty protective of the National Guard.

Historically Congress has been unwilling to allow foreign powers to meddle in our elections. I am not prepared, at this juncture, to base my expectations of the legislature on historical precedent.

Where are the funds coming from to build the wall? Wouldn’t he need a new appropriation?

He’s reappropriating funds that would otherwise go to disaster relief like in Georgia, because why not?

(No, I’m not being serious about it, but god help me, I can’t see it beyond his doing)

I would’ve thought so, but this is Drumpf - the technicalities and minutiae of the rule of law don’t matter to him. He just signs things into law and lets other people worry about how to make it so. Remember, Drumpf cannot be wrong, his ego won’t allow it.

re: #19 Hecuba’s daughter

Reposted from dead thread downstairs:

In general, we are not supposed to demonize entire groups of people; you shouldn’t blame an innocent person for evil committed by others in the group. But that rule doesn’t apply to all groups: there aren’t “good” Nazis or “good” members of the KKK. My question is: have we reached that point with Republicans? Should they all be held responsible for what any member says or does?

Republican villainy is truly endless. In South Dakota, voters just passed a ballot initiative for ethics and campaign reform.

The Republican response to this is to overturn the ballot initiative making use of state powers intended for literal emergencies.

So, passage of ethics and campaign reform is an emergency for Republicans. Good to know. Never would have guessed it, from the way the mainstream media persists in both siderist delusions.

We have a good chunk of the country still in reality and another chunk that’s gone completely mad and thinks it’s okay to run over protesters and shit like that.

The fact that a significant part of the news establishment is perfectly content to provide ‘coverage’ like this does not help:

Moderator (M): Today’s topic is triangles, and how many sides they have.

Republican talking head (RTH): Four, or was it seven? I can’t remember what Trump had in his latest tweet.

Sane person (SP): You can’t be serious. It’s three. By definition.

M: We have an interesting disagreement today. Let’s see what the polls say (60% 3 sides, 40% other than 3 sides). What’s the panel’s take on this?

RTH: 3 sided triangles are a communist plot. Schools should be under local control to prevent this kind of centralized tyranny. (RTH starts foaming at the mouth and chewing the carpet. Jumbled GOP talking points can be heard in the ravings)

SP: Having three sides is the defining trait of a triangle. A four-sided triangle is logically impossible.

M: This was a good debate and both sides made their points well. What did the focus group think?

There are some subtle differences: one of his advisers may be suggesting he do this for flexibility:
Amendments: An executive order can only be amended or rescinded by another executive order. A presidential memorandum can be changed with another memorandum.

Authority: Under an executive order signed by President John F. Kennedy, an executive order must cite the authority the president has to issue it. That could be the constitution, or a specific statute. Presidential memoranda have no such requirement.

OK, it may be the vodka, but after starting to yelp I told my beagle Ody to use his inside voice. He stood there staring at me. I asked him if he needed to pee, and he responded with a low, half-hearted “arooo”

Love beagles. My dad had one named Rip. Thought he’d be a hunting dog, but nah.

My pet story for the day. Last night my Chica (cat) was at her water bowl vocalizing (she talks all the time….ALL the time)

It was empty. It’s never empty.

So this morning it was empty again, I was like SHIT & looked it up - kidney failure & all that.

Took me another re-fill of the bowl mid-day to realize it was cracked & leaking all over the mat under it. (kit sitter must have dropped it, never realized)

She’s missing the long game being played by Trump here. His goal isn’t to convince you that there are millions of people voting illegally. He is engaging in this to put forward the idea in the heads of people like Steven King, Louie Gohmert, and like-minded congressmen to attempt to overturn the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as well as other sweeping disenfranchisement of minority voters (you know, those who were “illegally voting”)

Yup. Didn’t hear a damn word from them when I was homeless.

And the amount of money required to help refugees is insignificant in comparison to the amount required to help homeless vets.

Plus, the GOP wants to turn the VA into a “government chartered non-profit” (this week). Wingnuts also want to take away our medical care.

Mexico is not going to accept any wall talk from Trump.

Typical Trump will be all blowing kisses and friendly salesman to their face.

They will just have to sit through it.

Well, with the new FCC Chairman who so opposes Net Neutrality, I presume Alexa will still work well in places that have good Internet service; on the other hand, Little Green Footballs will be relegated to the “slow lane.”

My jokes about having to log on here with a 300-baud modem might look more like reality to me. Or maybe a Teletype if Mr. Johnson offers a text-only service.

Voting is a moral responsibility. Voting for the NOT FASCIST who could win the election was the moral thing to do.

And looking at the Libertarian Party’s main Webpage, they are all in on the GOP destroying government (they want them to work faster).

re: #376 darthstar

So my wife’s Alexa arrived today. Thing is fucking awesome. “Alexa, play the Grateful Dead.” (Okay, so she only plays studio cuts, but when I asked her to play Yonder Mountain String Band she opened with a live cover of the GD’s Shakedown Street so points there). “Alexa, stream KQED” - works perfectly…

In the 60s we were afraid our phones were tapped. Now we pay top dollar for our own surveillance. We stopped being paranoid and became stupid.

re: #389 darthstar

The wake words are limited to Alexa, Echo, and Amazon (not sure on the third). I know from trying to help a friend change the wake word. I’m happy with “Alexa” because I can picture her wearing nothing but an apron as she serves up NPR.

It’s not quite asleep if it can hear its name.

Ya know. This ban on Muslims from certain countries. Useless. They’ll just get visas from Saudi Arabia/Turkey/countries not on the list. I know it won’t be easy for 95% of them, but they’ll get help. Even from people here in the US.

It’s the GOP and Trump being hateful pieces of shit.

Nothing going on in this household within earshot of it that I’d be embarrassed about.

That’s why mine is downstairs, in the kitchen. ;)

Wife put a tower in the dining room and a little puck in the front room. I was looking for an excuse to stop talking to her anyway.

re: #283 EPR-radar

The three edges, that’s three. If it’s laying flat, there’s the top side, and bottom side. And if it’s standing up with one side facing me, front side and back side. As a subset of an infinite plane, there’s an inside and an outside. So five. There must be five lights. I’m sure of it.

Don’t worry, they’ll get around to banning all Muslims eventually.

re: #19 Hecuba’s daughter

Reposted from dead thread downstairs:

In general, we are not supposed to demonize entire groups of people; you shouldn’t blame an innocent person for evil committed by others in the group. But that rule doesn’t apply to all groups: there aren’t “good” Nazis or “good” members of the KKK. My question is: have we reached that point with Republicans? Should they all be held responsible for what any member says or does?

They actually like they’re at war with all American citizens who aren’t Republicans, so yes. Example, do you think the DC prosecutors who decided to charge journalists covering a protest with felonies lean Democrat? I doubt it.
