I’m going to have to ask my local farmers and ranchers about the USDA gag order, as noted by The Commodore here.
As for that idea of sending in Federal agents into Chicago, that in politics is called “floating a trial balloon.” The purpose of such a statement is to see who accepts it and who opposes it.

Always eats me up when I find out a ski patrol died in his ski boots while on duty. First time for me was when I was about eight or nine years old, when I heard that a Vail ski patrol dude got struck by lightning and died. I’ve skied past that dude’s memorial a thousand times and I always think about his extraordinary stroke of bad luck.
Today, this happened:
Joe Zuiches, a 42 year-old resident of Olympic Valley and a member of the Squaw Valley professional ski patrol since 2012, was killed in a fatal incident at 8:35 AM this morning during avalanche control activities. The incident, which occurred at the top of Gold Coast Ridge at Squaw Valley, does not appear to be avalanche related.
A bomb he was using (or someone else was using, we don’t know right now) for avalanche control blew up too close to him, and he died.

Kurt Eichenwald writes in Newsweek about the three Marines who disappeared in the Mayaguez Incident (the last combat of the Vietnam War, in which the Khmer Rouge seized a US container ship). President Ford ordered the Marines in to save the crew and recapture the vessel.
President Ford got a huge boost in his ratings over the counterattack, but for forty years conservatives have argued the three missing Marines disobeyed orders and didn’t catch their helicopter in time, so being missing was their fault.
Their names are the last on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Now the information comes out that they were left on the beach and that was covered up to blame the Marines themselves for being left behind.

(According to Velie, the Americans recorded all radio communications with Marines on the ground.) “It was definitely Hall, Marshall and Hargrove,” Anderson adds. With the three Marines possibly still alive but no longer responding, the U.S. military had a difficult decision to make. Velie says there were many possible reasons the Marines on the beach didn’t get back on the radio. His aircraft could have moved out of their range. Or they had been wounded or forced to hide because Khmer Rouge fighters were nearby. Because of their poor swimming ability, he doubts they tried going out to sea. His aircraft stayed in the area until after midnight, hoping to make contact again, but the radio remained silent.

Ruslan Stoyanov, head of computer incidents investigation at Kaspersky Lab, was arrested over treason charges, Russian media reported on Wednesday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Stoyanov is said to have actively cooperated with the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) and his arrest may be linked to arrest of one of the FSB department heads, the Kommersant newspaper reported citing a source close to FSB.
Both Stoyanov and the FSB employee were arrested in December. Details of the case remain unknown.

The White House said Tuesday that President Donald Trump continues to believe that voting by millions of undocumented immigrants cost him a victory in the national popular vote in November’s election.
“It’s a belief he maintains,” White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters, one day after the new president rehashed the election at a reception for congressional leaders, repeating the debunked claim that 3 million to 5 million immigrants in the country illegally voted for his opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Spicer offered no evidence of fraud. Pressed by reporters on what evidence Trump has, Spicer said Trump “has believed that for a while, based on studies and information he has.”
Further down that article, Mitch McConnell played magic balance fairy:
Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters voter fraud does happen, adding: “There are always arguments on both sides about how much, how frequent and all the rest.”
They also have Senator Lindsay Graham’s comment to Mr. Trump that he needs to knock this off.
A provision tucked into the Defense Authorisation Act gutted the Broadcasting Board of Governors (which runs VOA).
Essentially, that gives Mr. Trump his “Trump TV and Radio” financed by the taxpayers.

Almost none are in farming, and this just a generation difference. You could have FDR Democrats among family farmers, but that’s unlikely when farming is becoming more like corporate anything. Ultimately, though, it comes down to who will fork over the subsidies and in places like California and Arkansas who will look the other way on undocumented workers.

I like that. Infrastructure, broadband, and as Wendell said, outreach on other aspects of the American dream. I just found this. It’s one story, but it shows that there may be some other ways, too, such as support for sustainable, locally-sourced agriculture.

It is not “voter fraud” for someone to be registered in two states. My kids are still on the voter rolls at our address even though they moved away years ago and vote where they currently live. I mentioned this to the poll worker the last time I went to vote in person and she said they can only remove them from the rolls if they receive a registered letter from the voter requesting the removal.

When we moved to Nebraska, we wrote the Kay County, Oklahoma elections clerk to remove us from the voter rolls there after we were registered here.

In person voter fraud or impersonation requires (like any other crime) an intent to carry out the crime. Being in Nebraska and registering to vote here hardly would qualify as intent to commit voter fraud in Oklahoma.

Trump’s double fisting the derp this morning. First with the immigration crap that he’s going to limit access from Muslim-majority nations, even though those seeking refuge here are trying to escape the likes of ISIS.
It’s the same fucking thing these fascist yams were doing back in the 1930s - preventing Jews from entering the US because they suspected Jews were spies or German infiltrators. How many thousands - nay hundreds of thousands of Jews - perished because the US refused to allow entry? How many died because these nationalist nuts think that people coming to the Shining City on the Hill are the enemy and not because they are trying to live up to the mythos of being a refuge and welcome people from around the world (ignoring that all but the Native Americans are people who came here to escape tyranny from around the world, and then promptly tried to impose their own brand here - up to and including screwing over the very Native Americans whose lands were expropriated).
Speaking of Native Americans, Trump is pushing the pipelines that would directly harm the Standing Rock Reservation should the pipeline leak. The threat of a leak was sufficient to justify changing the route away from other cities, but that pushed the risk of harm on to Native Americans. This is Trump screwing over Native Americans once again - just as he did back when he was running his casinos into the ground.
On top of all that - he’s pushing the voter fraud nonsense again - but that’s a lie with a purpose. Get enough people to recite/repeat the lie and push voter suppression methods that limit the vote of minorities and people who would otherwise vote against the GOP. The GOP fears voters. They lose when people turn out to vote. That’s why this is the most dangerous of the lies he’s told to date. It’s the one that has no basis in reality - and it’s quite besides the point.
The GOP will use the lie to fashion voter ID laws and make other restrictions that reduce the access to polls.
Meanwhile, Senate Democrats continue to piss me off by not voting against clearly unqualified and incompetent nominees for positions sought. Carson’s nomination should have been a slam dunk NO and yet Democrats including Warren are saying that they’ll back him for HUD.
All these nominees are getting rubber stamped by the GOP in any event since Democrats don’t have the numbers to stop any of the confirmations. But the Democrats aren’t even showing that they’re learning the new rules - which is to say the rules don’t exist. The GOP tossed all the rules out the window when they engaged in obstruction from day 1. Democrats have to learn this or else we’re going to see far worse in the years to come. Schumer isn’t helping matters either.
So far the only Democrat who seems to have gotten this is Gillinbrand.
Unqualified nominees should be unceremoniously voted against. This isn’t even a question, and yet Democrats are waffling and thinking that this somehow improves their chances down the road? This is the same mess that led to Democrats losing control of Congress in midterms in 2010 and 2014. Running away from the principled stand (which at that time was supporting Obamacare). Now, they’re running away from no votes against unqualified nominees.

I’ve been expecting sane nations to take steps, some of them pretty drastic, to mitigate the damage Trump can do. It must be assumed, for example, that any information shared will go straight to Moscow.
I also wonder if countries like Switzerland are dusting off their nuclear weapons plans. The Swiss actually pursued nukes pretty seriously in the 50s and 60s and kept their nuclear weapons working group open until 1988. They also kept 20 kg of plutonium until 2016 when they transferred it to the US for “safekeeping.” Will they want it back now?

Since so many churches paint atheists (we’re evil) and liberals (we’re also evil) with such a broad brush, I’ll just keep that as a reminder when I was first introduced to the concept of religious compassion in Christianity I laughed my head off. (Literally.)
There are compassionate Christians to be sure, but they would be compassionate if they were any other religion or none. It isn’t religion that makes one compassionate, it is empathy.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens here in Texas. Last year, when Abbott attempted to block refugees in Texas, some of the churches sued and won, and they took some of the refugees in.

Well, the last 24 hours have been interesting. Yesterday afternoon I got to see a NASCAR-style crash on the freeway right in front of me. This morning, I got up at 5 am as usual, got ready and drove to work. Sixteen miles later, just as I’m about to turn in the parking lot, my brother called. Thankfully, I have one of those newfangled cars with Bluetooth so it routed right to the dashboard. It was my brother, who basically has been throwing up for the last 24 hours and needed me to take him to the ER. I turned around, drove to my mom’s and, yup, he was in bad shape. So now I’m sitting in a cube at the ER with mom and brother. What fun.

LINCOLN — Embattled State Sen. Bill Kintner is resigning from the Nebraska Legislature following months of criticism from lawmakers, constituents and Gov. Pete Ricketts.
Kintner’s resignation is effective Jan. 30.
The Papillion senator’s expulsion from the Legislature was likely to have occurred later Wednesday had he not stepped down.
Kintner, 56, announced his decision to resign during an 8:15 a.m. press conference at the State Capitol, less than an hour ahead of when lawmakers planned to take up a motion to expel him.
Ricketts will appoint Kintner’s replacement to represent District 2, which includes Cass County and parts of Sarpy and Otoe Counties. The appointee will serve until 2018.
Kintner, who admitted last year to using a state laptop to engage in cybersex with a woman he met online, became the target of a barrage of criticism during legislative floor debate this week after he retweeted a Twitter post that appeared to make light of sexual assault.
Speaker of the Legislature Jim Scheer, who planned to introduce the motion to expel Kintner, said Tuesday he thought he had the required 33 votes to adopt it.
Nearly half of the Legislature’s 49 senators told The World-Herald that they would vote to remove Kintner from office. The majority of the remaining senators said they were unsure how they would vote.
Two lawmakers — Sens. Curt Friesen of Henderson and Mike Groene of North Platte — ruled out expulsion, saying they supported censure.
Kintner’s expulsion would have been unprecedented in the 80-year history of the unicameral Legislature.
Until now, Kintner had defied calls for his resignation. That included requests from the Cass County Republican Party and Ricketts, who reiterated his call as recently as this week.
Kintner is married to Lauren Kintner, who leads Ricketts’ policy research office.
Sen. Kintner faced particular pressure from Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha, who for months distributed poems and drawings criticizing Kintner.
Chambers has said that Kintner’s $1,000 fine for misuse of state property wasn’t a severe enough penalty, and chastised other senators for remaining silent on the issue.
In the 2015 videoconferencing incident, Kintner masturbated with a woman he met on Facebook.
A conservative Republican, Kintner on Tuesday said he was “very troubled by the liberal activist campaign that is using my mistake on the tweet to escalate calls for my resignation.”

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones is famous for his opposition to undocumented workers. Now one of his victims has fought back and won $100,000.00!
Luis Rodriguez was hanging drywall at a construction site in Butler County when Sheriff staff members entered the work site as part of an “immigration investigation” and rounded up over 20 Hispanic workers. Twelve workers were fired after questioning by the sheriff staff. Mr. Rodriguez was arrested based on documents that he possessed. Attorney George Fee vigorously represented Mr. Rodriguez in the criminal case and won an acquittal. But once in custody, Mr. Rodriguez was removed from the country along with his wife and two children. They had lived in Southern Ohio for eleven years working, paying taxes, and attending a local Christian Church. They are now living in poverty in Mexico.
Attorney Al Gerhardstein sued Sheriff Jones on behalf of Mr. Rodriguez. He claimed that Mr. Rodriguez was “seized” when he was taken to the construction trailer at the worksite for interrogation in violation of the Fourth Amendment. He also alleged a violation of the Equal Protection Clause. In addition, Gerhardstein argued that the Sheriff did not have power to enforce the federal civil immigration law. The case was pending on motions for summary judgment and only weeks away from trial when the County agreed to pay $100,000 in settlement of the claims.

I’m overseas, but registered to vote in Clark County, WA, as that was my last residence in the USA before I moved over here. Now if (heaven forbid) I dropped dead tomorrow or got hit by a truck while crossing the street, etc., I’d be still showing as a registered voter until the Clark County Auditor received official notification that I was, in fact, no longer among the living.
How long that would take, I really don’t know, but I presume it might be awhile.
