Given the circumstances, RBG may not retire until either a regime change or if she passes.

Hopefully. I’d love to say there’s no way Trump could get re-elected, but I’m never saying never with that guy again. :-(

The post that killed the last thread:

Twice in the last ten minutes I have gotten telephone calls from someone claiming “there is something wrong with my computer.”

I do not have caller ID on my dial phone so I can’t see these calls coming in; I hung up both times.

Someone trying to scam Western Nebraska for fraudulent claims representing computer firms is definitely calling the wrong area code.

That presumes there is another election, which seems to be a fading prospect by the day.

Ain’t that something though? All those things Obama was accused of, like he was going to declare Marshall Law and cancel the election — it’s actually not that far-fetched with Trump the way things are going. :-(

Republicans are very predictable. Everything they accuse Democrats of in terms of being lawless etc. is stuff the Republicans plan on doing once in office.

Projection on steroids.

My wife and I got into another political dispute last night.

In 1984, she voted for Ronald Reagan (her first election). In 1980, I voted for Jimmy Carter (my first election).

She claimed she left the Republican Party for the Libertarian Party because “the Republicans left her” (a common refrain amongst so-called independent voters that still vote for Republicans).

I pointed out “since when? Republicans have been like this my whole adult life, and yours too. Reagan’s shining city on a hill slogan was really the light of an oncoming train.”

That didn’t go over too well. She considers herself a conservative, despite the fact she holds nothing but liberal positions. I keep trying to point that out to her, but she is stubborn on the point.

I’m guessing I should just let her be: If she wants to call herself a conservative and continue with left-leaning views on everything from women’s rights to labor unions, fine. The word she labels herself with is hardly worth arguments over.

She’s no longer a Libertarian either; she is a Democrat. Today I doubt she would give Reagan a second look if he were on the ballot.

They’ll only suppress the votes of everyone who isn’t an old angry male WASP.

Or, OTOH, Acting President Mattis gives a courtesy nod after all existing congressmen and senators have been purged reassigned in a total realignment of the federal government to eliminate dysfunction.

I wish I could use the //// tag, but that’s what Erdogan has done in Turkey multiple times, no?

Disagreeing with Mr. Trump makes no one a traitor, at least until they change the US Code on what a traitor is (someone who takes up arms against the several states, or gives aid or material support to someone who does).

If this keeps up, there won’t be any business unless it is overseas.

Let’s see…UK, Pound is tanking. Brexit is going to screw them up. France is facing LaPen which will ruin their economy when they break from the EU. I imagine Russia will attack Germany since they actually have their shit together right now. And we are…who knows.

I know that when I crossed the border the other day there was no one there. There was no one returning. The people I know who usually go to FL to winter are returning early. Vacations to the US are being cancelled. That is just here. I cannot imagine the rest of the world is too excited to come to the Now Made Great US of A at this point.

What business was that you were speaking of?

welp…

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump will not head to Milwaukee for a previously scheduled visit of a Harley Davidson factory after the company decided it wasn’t comfortable hosting him amid planned protests, an administration official said Tuesday.
Trump had been scheduled to tour the factory Thursday where he also planned to sign executive orders related to American manufacturing.
Large protests have been in the works in recent days, particularly in light of Trump’s executive order issuing an immigration ban.
It was the threat of protests, and not Trump’s planned signing of executive orders, that made Harley Davidson uncomfortable, the official said.

We have a few advantages over the events of 1933:

a) We have knowledge of what happened before. Though they may mix up the playbook, the plays are the same.
b) The administration appears to be leaking like a sieve. The Muslim ban order, the public assistance order, &c were leaked a couple days out, allowing rapid massive protests to organise.
c) We have the Internet and much better telephone service. We can instantly flash news anywhere around the world.
d) In most parts of the country, cell phones exist to capture and spread video or audio of egregious and unlawful acts.
e) We have a president that is absolutely obsessed with Twitter, and is being pilloried for being a puppet of his underlings. Sewing discord amongst his advisers is much easier to do now than eighty years ago.

Actually his first move was to ban all the other political parties. My guess is that happens here by March.

First they came for the Democrats, and we said NOT THIS TIME.

Mr. Johnson nailed it in his article a few years ago on why he left Movement Conservative. He predicted this pretty much to a T.

If a holy book is written in the future, he might be listed as a prophet. /s

Calling the county sheriff now about telephone scam.

Spoke to the county sheriff, he notes he has received dozens of calls today about this computer scam, mostly from people without computers. The sheriff is going to run an article in the county paper about it.

I wonder if it’s this well known scam, where people call claiming to represent Microsoft or to be associated with Microsoft, saying they are getting reports from the called person’s computer about issues:

Answers from Microsoft

It is a SCAM!!! Microsoft does not do that nor do they have partners who do that nor do they hire sub-contractors or people or even get volunteers to do that. There are probably thousands of such companies out there doing this every day - we get two or three messages like this (or more) every day asking about it. You are the lucky ones who recognized the scam enough not to be sucked into it and end up with identify theft, infections, hacking of your computer, convincing you to buy software or services you either don’t need or that don’t really exist at all, and all sorts of nefarious tricks. You’d be surprised by how many contact us AFTER they realized they’d been suckered asking what to do. Do not waste time talking to these people, do not give them any personal information whatsoever, do not be tricked by what they may get you to see on the computer - in fact, don’t do anything they suggest on your computer or even visit websites they recommend, and for heaven’s sake don’t give them access to your computer.

Microsoft knows this goes on but with these companies springing up like dandelions, or closing and changing names when discovered, and mostly operating in foreign countries, it would take an army of lawyers to pursue every one of them. They do the best they can, but there simply are too many and more get added every day. People have to be careful of these things. They not only occur by phone, but also by e-mail, instant messaging, regular mail and every way imaginable. Just remember that Microsoft does not do this and hang up or delete emails or messages or mail from anyone claiming they are doing this because they know information about your computer or want information from you to confirm your account so it won’t be closed and ask you for your username and password and all sorts of other personal information. Microsoft DOES NOT DO THIS!

See the following for additional information about this and what to do and how Microsoft operates:

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A longtime Border Patrol official who is backed by the agents’ union has been named chief of the agency, less than a week after his predecessor resigned under pressure.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Tuesday on Twitter than Ronald Vitiello has been appointed to lead the agency at a time when President Donald Trump has pledged to erect a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico and add 5,000 agents from the current level of about 20,000.

The National Border Patrol Council — an early and outspoken backer of Donald Trump’s presidential bid — openly supported Vitiello for the job and pushed for the ouster of his predecessor, Mark Morgan, who resigned last week at the request of the new administration.

A 16-year-old Jordanian visa holder, who attends Katy High School west of Houston, has been detained by U.S. immigration officials for more than three days following President Trump’s controversial immigration executive order, according to his brother and an attorney representing the family.

Mohammad Abu Khadra, who lives in Katy with his brother Rami, traveled to Jordan last week to renew his visa. When he flew into Bush IAH airport Saturday, officials with U.S. Customs and Border Protection detained him at the airport for about 48 hours. He was transferred to an Office of Refugee Resettlement shelter in Chicago Monday, where he remained as of Tuesday afternoon. The teen has no access to his cell phone or to a computer, his brother said.

I don’t know who they are claiming to represent, because I don’t get that far.

I have a canned court horn for scaring off turkey vultures from my trees. Perhaps I should employ it on my telephone if they call again.

Same words as with internment.

Maybe Trump will actually use all that FEMA housing the conservative were worried would be turned into camps for those Obama would imprison after martial law was put into effect.

Only Trump will use them to put foreigners in…then media and artists and gays…and then anyone that is a Democrat and liberal/progressive…and then conservatives that are bulking at Trumps ways.

One of the staunchest opponents of that bill was Justice Corbin. He passed away just a few months ago and wrote the majority opinion when it was struck down. He was a good man.

Edit: Almost forgot the best part. After it was struck down, during the next election, a poll worker asked to see his ID. He refused and stated that the law was struck down. The poll worker replied that he had to ask by law. Corbin simply stated “No you don’t. I wrote the opinion.”

She has not been confirmed.

I suppose that depends on the definition of “confirmed.” That tweet must be an alternative “confirmation.” The only thing I can find is a report at RedState, noting confirmation by the committee, not the Senate.

redstate.com

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions has voted to confirm Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education in the Donald Trump Administration. The vote was 12-11, all along party lines.

Lamar Alexander started the hearing off with his own comments and a chastising of the Democrats on the panel for vowing to vote against DeVos even before they received her answers to the hundreds of questions they presented to her prior to the confirmation vote.

Meanwhile, I’ve had nit-twits arguing that Democrats moving to block Trump SCT pick are somehow violating something, and that the GOP was within their rights to block even hearing Garland.

Yeah, it’s unprecedented that a president nominates someone in their final year and gets absolutely no action at all on it. Not even when someone loses a national election and still nominates a justice for the court.

Oh wait, hang on. You mean someone did that?

Yup. John Adams lost 1800 election to Thomas Jefferson.

You might have heard of those two. Adams lost to Jefferson. Adams still nominated John Marshall to the Court.

You might have heard of this too. Why? Because he was quickly confirmed, even though Adams was the epitome of being “lame duck.”

That’s right - John Marshall, a lame duck nomination by John Adams, was confirmed to the Supreme Court in 1800.

Marshall went on to be the most influential Supreme Court justice in our history - establishing key principles of judicial review (again, you might have heard of him).*

So, when someone claims Obama was a lame duck and shouldn’t have a say - that’s just bullshit. Arguing that Obama had no right? That too is bullshit (and wouldn’t go out on a limb to say it’s likely racist bullshit too).

*come to think of it, that’s the reason the GOP doesn’t want to respect history or comity here - because Marshall revealed that the letter of the law has lots of room for interpretation and judicial review is antithetical to the modern GOP regressive nature. All the GOP talk of strict constructionism falls when you realize that the founders themselves were open to differing analysis/interpretation of the laws they were writing.

The order bars citizens of seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S.

During the last three months of 2016, Nebraska as a whole had more than 500 refugees arrive in the state, according to the U.S. State Department.

A protest organizer told 10/11 the rally is to show support for communities who are impacted by Trump’s executive orders.

While the executive order banning immigration from the seven countries is at the forefront today, others are worried about the president’s plan to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, and the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Sunday night, people of all different backgrounds are holding flags of different countries, showing solidarity.

“We have many individuals who have grown up in this community that have come here as refugees, as immigrants, who feel strongly about president trump’s orders,” said Dr. Jeannette Eileen Jones-Vazansky, one of the rally’s organizers.

Shannon Downs just said she just wants to do something to help.

“I personally am really terrified of the direction that the country is going in right now and i wanted to be somewhere where people want to do something about it,” Downs said.

People have protested the order in many cities across the country since it was signed on Friday.

Several businesses, including Apple and Google, have also protested the order, as have several congressmen.

U.S. senator from Nebraska, Ben Sasse, has said that President Trump is right to focus on the borders, but the “order is too broad”.

Some judges have issued emergency orders temporarily barring the U.S. from deporting people subject to the ban.

DHS Secretary John Kelly released a statement Sunday evening saying, “absent the receipt of significant derogatory information indicating a serious threat to public safety and welfare, lawful permanent resident status will be a dispositive factor in our case-by-case determinations.”

Jared’s got his own issues. He’s a fucknut too - essentially getting disowned by his own family. Failing to control Trump’s most bigoted urges, and can’t even negotiate within his own Admin for getting Trump off this destructive course of action led by Bannon (and Flynn). And Trump holds him out as the negotiator who will solve the Arab Israeli conflict.

No one in the administration is moral or ethical. Not a single voice of reason.

Heck the NSC, which is the last line of defense has been gutted by Trump.

The GOP, who claim that they’re strong on national security, are SILENT.

More than that - they’re complicit in all this. They have enabled and are spurring the most extreme agenda of regression in world history. Burn it down. Burn it all down? That’s exactly what they’re doing. Attacking every federal agency and department.

Massachusetts and New York Attorneys General join ACLU lawsuits against Muslim ban.

I’m no longer sure lawsuits will do anything. The administration and its departments have already shown they are not going to follow court orders.

At the same time, with rare exceptions such as my own Senator Ben Sasse, there has been no objection (and even Sen. Sasse is still wrong, the order is not overly broad as he claims, it is unconstitutional on its face).

Gorsuch is the youngest pick in decades, which is one of the reasons why ELECTIONS FUCKING MATTER.

Gorsuch is what happens when people think both parties are the same. Trump got to steal a pick for the Court that belonged with Obama. That’s indisputable and undeniable. The GOP stole the Court with their obstructionism, and they’ve gotten away with it.

Well, they got aided by a media that buried Clinton under incessant BS and MBF. They benefited from Russian actions, and then ultimately by a few thousand voters in a couple of states.

Gorsuch is the son of David Gorsuch and Anne Gorsuch Burford (née Anne Irene McGill), a Republican and states’ rights proponent, who, under President Ronald Reagan, was the first female head of the United States Environmental Protection Agency from 1981 to 1983, when she was forced to resign for failure to turn over documents to Congress related to the alleged mishandling of Superfund.

President Trump said, “I promised that as president I would find the very best judge in the country for the Supreme Court. I promised to select someone who respects our laws, and who is representative of our Constitution, and who loves our Constitution, and someone who will interpret them as written.”

The President then announced that he had nominated Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court. Trump brought Gorsuch and family up, and then continued to talk about himself, and what a great decision that he made.

Trump eventually ran down Gorsuch’s resume and claimed that he thinks his nominee is going to be confirmed unanimously, which is never, ever going to happen.

The President was very proud of himself for pulling a “surprise” that wasn’t a surprise to hardly anyone.

Republican shit never changes, part 1,000,001: en.wikipedia.org

Gorsuch based her administration of the EPA on the New Federalism approach of downsizing federal agencies by delegating their functions and services to the individual states. She believed that the EPA was over-regulating business and that the agency was too large and not cost-effective. During her 22 months as agency head, she cut the budget of the EPA by 22%, reduced the number of cases filed against polluters, relaxed Clean Air Act regulations, and facilitated the spraying of restricted-use pesticides. She cut the total number of agency employees, and hired staff from the industries they were supposed to be regulating. Environmentalists contended that her policies were designed to placate polluters, and accused her of trying to dismantle the agency.

So David Brooks can fuck off with his Reagan-worship. For nearly my entire adult life, Republicans have existed to do as much damage as possible, and the only limits on their destructive impulses have been externally imposed.

One proposal I’ve seen is for the Democrats to state that they will filibuster Trump’s nominee for the exact same length of time the Republicans sat on the Garland nomination.

It would be interesting to see how the media would provide cover for GOP claims of ‘unprecedented obstruction’ in that situation.

The response to this nomination of the few prominent NeverTrumpers left who never gave in serves as a reminder that the enemy of my enemy is not necessarily your friend. they still favor allowing employers to impose their religious beliefs on their employees; no limits on how much the rich can spend to buy government; and the crumbling of the Wall of Separation between Church and State. For women, they may not want Trump grabbing your p*ssy, but they’re cool with government regulating it.

DETROIT (WJBK) - A local business owner flies to Iraq to bring his mother back home to the US for medical treatment. But under President Trump’s ban on immigration and travel from seven predominately Muslim nations, he was forced to leave his family behind.

His mother died just one day after being told she couldn’t return to the United States.

Mike Hager fled Iraq with his family during the Gulf War, returned during the Iraq war and worked alongside United States Marines and Army forces. He now owns a business in Metro Detroit and said his mom would still be alive today if President Donald Trump had not instituted his travel ban on Muslim countries.

Mike Hager said he was returning home with his family that included his sick mom. They were returning home to the United States where his mother has lived since 1995. As they were waiting in line at the airport in Iraq on Friday, he was told that he could pass through because he was a U.S. citizen. But his family members - including his mom - weren’t allowed, despite holding green cards.

Somehow I doubt the Republicans would care if it was Ginsburg’s seat. Sucks for them that Scalia died when Obama was president but they can’t get away with how they lied and treated Garland.

re: #440 retired cynic

I heard a speaker on NPR this afternoon saying that Democrats might want to make a fuss, but not try to totally block this seat, since it was “Scalia’s” seat. They might want to keep their powder dry for the next one, to keep the balance of the court from changing.

My personal opinion is very close to shoot them all down, root and branch.

“Keeping the powder dry” is always a stupid argument, especially now. This kind of surrender has to end immediately.

BTW, Thurgood Marshall’s seat on the court was taken by Clarence Thomas, so that kind of thinking about preserving Scalia’s seat is also so stupid it burns.

Any Democratic surrender at this time will be accepted as no more than the deference Republicans are naturally due, and will have absolutely no moderating effect on possible future GOP nominations or their willingness to ram it through the Senate.

Sanders wasn’t that strong or he would have won the nomination.
