Interesting, my old law professor, John Eastman, is going to be on O’Rielly tonight talking about “California trying to become a sanctuary state”. As much as I liked Eastman, personally, he has always been something of an ideological throw back, so I’m guessing he’s not going to be down with this.

It’s always interesting to see one’s instructors on TV. Haven’t had that much but my one history professor did speak with Doris Kearns Goodwin on Lincoln’s bicentennial. Richard Norton Smith btw if you guys are curious. He at least was a Republican but he worked for Ed Brooke who was really liberal and Prof Smith was fair. He especially liked my depiction of Nixon as one of the last NEw Dealers.

David Shulkin, President Trump’s nominee to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs, said at his confirmation hearing Wednesday that he would seek “major reform and a transformation of VA” — but would not privatize the federal health care system for veterans.

“There will be far greater accountability, dramatically improved access, responsiveness and expanded care options,” Shulkin told the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. “But the Department of Veterans Affairs will not be privatized under my watch.”

In fact, if I were a judge I’d be even less sympathetic to that than a parent who panicked and had no idea what to do.If you want to put yourself in danger by not taking certain medications, that is your right but you don’t get to put your child in danger.

To follow up on this, the baker is running a business, and the operation and existence of that business rely on infrastructure and a legal system that are both provided by the state. In return, the state is entitled to expect the business to serve members of the public without indulging in invidious discrimination.

Allowing religious exceptions to anti-discrimination civil rights laws effectively makes these laws pointless.

ah, my bad…it’s one of Manson’s followers being recommended for parole.

A state panel has recommended paroling a former follower of cult leader Charles Manson after California governors blocked four previous recommendations for his release.

The 31st parole hearing for 74-year-old Bruce Davis was held Wednesday at the California Men’s Colony at San Luis Obispo.

Gov. Jerry Brown will have the final say on whether Davis is released.

Davis is serving a life sentence for the 1969 slayings of musician Gary Hinman and stuntman Donald “Shorty” Shea.

He was not involved in the more notorious killings of actress Sharon Tate and six others by the Manson “family.”

Parole panels have decided before that Davis is no longer a public safety risk only to see governors — who have the final say on release — block his parole.

Exactly. I mean if you want to belong to a church that believes gay people and non-believers are hell bound. Fine, I can’t stop you there but if you’re operating a business that relies on our secular infrastructure and legal system, you don’t get to be exempted from anti-discrimination laws.

My take on it is this - he MIGHT, JUST MIGHT have done a good thing, IF, AND ONLY IF there were no pictures taken, and he never, ever mentions it in his usual self-aggrandizing way.

That’s one small good thing against a mountain of shit.

But that goes away the instant he whines about people saying he doesn’t care, and here he went out of his way to fly to Dover to meet the casket.

I also more than half suspect somebody said, “Here, do this. I know it’s a pain, but if we leak it just right, it’ll humanize you.”

Pretty much. I mean I’m deeply sorry you lost your child but you put your religious beliefs ahead of your child’s welfare. You don’t get a pass for that. In fact, if I were a judge I’d be even less sympathetic to that than a parent who panicked and had no idea what to do.If you want to put yourself in danger by not taking certain medications, that is your right but you don’t get to put your child in danger.

They didn’t “lose” their child; they killed their child.

Trump’s Australian call.

It should have been one of the most congenial calls for the new commander in chief — a conversation with the leader of Australia, one of America’s staunchest allies, at the end of a triumphant week.

Instead, President Trump blasted Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull over a refugee agreement and boasted about the magnitude of his electoral college win, according to senior US officials briefed on the Saturday exchange. Then, 25 minutes into what was expected to be an hour-long call, Trump abruptly ended it.

It’s past time to get the net and straight jacket on him.

I also had Tim Canova as a professor. He’s the guy that primaried DWS. He was a good guy too.

I think it might have something to do with being lawyers. We have the ability to separate our work from personal. I can argue points of law and policy with you all day, and we might not agree, but we can still grab a pizza and pitcher of beer afterwards. Sadly, I feel like that’s something that we are losing as a society. And we are probably going to be worse off because of it

I do think you’re right about that. Even before I became a paralegal, I’ve always counted a number of friends I have a lot of ideological disagreements with. The funny thing is when we discuss politics as a family- my family is very liberal though my one brother has an independent streak and has told me that I’m too harsh on Republicans and their beliefs. Might well be but I’ve never ever used ideology as a reason not to be someone’s friend. I’m not petty. if I don’t agree with you on politics, I can find other stuff to focus on.

As a representative of my community, it is my job to hold leaders accountable and to work with anyone, regardless of party, to make Hawaii a better place for our families.”

“This morning, I sent a letter to my district explaining that I would like to leave the Republican Party and seek membership in the Democratic Party,” Fukumoto said. “When I was re-elected in November, I was elected as a Republican, and I want to honor my community’s choice by consulting them before any decision is made. As I articulated in my letter, I encourage my constituents to contact me with input and provide feedback. I was elected by the people of Mililani, and I am here to represent them.”

In some ways I still see myself as an independent, in that I’m not committed to either party a priori such that no conceivable evidence could change my voting pattern.

However, for a Republican to ever get my vote again as long as I live would take a truly remarkable reform of the Republican party, combined with a massive degeneration of the Democratic Party to some kind of toxic landfill fire.

Jeff Lord is a new name for me. From Wikipedia he seems to be a busy little shitbird:

In May 2012, Lord wrote an article in The American Spectator that compared President Barack Obama with Mao Zedong because of the similarities between Barack Obama’s slogan “Forward” and Chairman Mao’s Great Leap Forward. In the same article, he also compared Obama with the Hitler Youth due to their song “Vorwärts! Vorwärts!” (“Forward, Forward!”).

In February 2015, Lord called upon the Republican Party to demand an apology from the Democratic Party for their role in promoting and defending slavery and creating the segregationist Jim Crow system.

In June 2015, Lord wrote an open letter to Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the head of the U.S. Democratic Party, asking her to apologize for her party’s role in Indian removal, promoting and defending slavery, Confederate secession, and creating segregationist Jim Crow regimes, saying that the Democrats’ historical support for such institutions contributed and contributes to the continuing existence of racism and bigotry in American society.

This is what they are. This is what they do. And most in the media give them a pass on their garbage.

Yep and I remember the right wing howling and moaning about how the Obama administration even though the Bush administration started this was “going after veterans” by talking about how veterans are suspect-able to recruitment by extreme right wing orgs. And they’re right. It’s not a slight against veterans but these groups are going to go after people with know how on weaponry and guess who has a lot of know how on that. If the remnants of the US government were taking stronger stands against the Trump regime there would be less motive for people to start taking the law into their own hands.

Yes, Berkeley anarchists pretty much suck. But this is just the start of something really ugly, and Trump-Bannon is going to deliberately exploit and make it worse. Before long it won’t be just the anarchists.

I’m just not sure that it’s possible to use anarchists showing up and being violent at a protest in California as any sort barometer. Breaking things, setting fires and disrupting otherwise peaceful protests is apparently what they do. The real question I have is how they aren’t all serving time at this point.

I need to stop reading things like this because they make Bannon seem a hell of a lot smarter than he really is. Yeah, he is smart, but he’s not Tywin Lannister. Getting rid of the brown people is the point, as is angering the Middle East and provoking them into radicalizing even more.

The thing is Turnbull needs Trump a lot more than needs Turnbull. Turnbull is under real threat from his far right party party members, Labor is gaining ground…. Trump could have Turnbull right where he wanted him, but he couldn’t rein his ego in, and just throw Turnbull a bone.

Now Turnbull is being roasted by the media here, the far right columnists are having a field day….

Certainly not those in power.

I wonder if there’s a tipping point?

Outside of a military coup d’etat… there’s little else except the absolute unthinkable.

Paralleling with what Charles said earlier… if people feel resentful AND powerless (especially with a GOP complicit in this regime), they are going to wind up taking the law into their own hands.

ckkatz  Feb 1, 2017 • 8:02:51pm

re: #466 Stanley Sea

Every single day is a shock event. Or they are just so fucked up?

I have always viewed the first 6 months a new administration as a sort of legislative Blitzkrieg. It is very difficult to stop. Particularly when the ruling party owns both legislative houses. Eventually, party goals are achieved and/or friction takes its course.

However, what is so discomfiting about the current regime is how actively transgressive, destructive, and reactionary it has been. My sense is that these are deliberate tactics. Crude though they are.

To my mind there is much we do not know about the current regime’s final goals. And therefore why it is doing what it is doing.

I suspect that the weakening and destruction of our current organizations and beliefs are one goal. With the replacement by Regime organizations and goals. The purge at the State Dept is one example.

Meanwhile the GOP leadership apparently thinks that they can contain the Regime.

I would guess that a few stumbles are probably viewed as nothing more than acceptable casualties. As are, most likely, the thousands of deaths that these policy changes are likely to cause.

As always, ymmv. I have been wrong before. And will likely be wrong many times in the future. I certainly hope that I am wrong here.

More with the VH-3 than the VH-60 though. Rotors much lower with the -60, and that makes the Secret Service nervous.

re: #537 ckkatz

Bannon is suicidal. He just wants to destroy everything.

The GOP rank-and-file can’t control this regime; the regime can’t control themselves. They are both malicious and stupid. But as has been shown time and time again, these types of regimes fail in nightmarish scenes. 1793 France. 1917 Russia. 1990 Romania.

The last thing I want to do is add “2017 United States” to that list.

Yeah, if they’re running late, or for some reason they were unable to stage the A/C prior.
You’re more likely to see the Pres. getting off the helicopter with the rotors still turning.
More with the VH-3 than the VH-60 though. Rotors much lower with the -60, and that makes the Secret Service nervous.

Thank you for the education!
