Trump Horror, Day 14: Creationist Religious Fanatic to Head Education Dept., Trump Will Kill Dodd-Frank Rules

Politics • Views: 39,597

The destruction of the United States is accelerating again. A religious fanatic who has donated millions to creationist groups, and knows nothing about education, is about to become the Secretary of Education.

And Donald Trump is preparing to bring back the financial crisis by rolling back the Dodd-Frank regulations and giving his rapacious predatory business cronies free rein to do as they will.

Meanwhile, Trump had absolutely nothing to say about the horrific attack by one of his superfans on a mosque in Quebec City, but he did have time to tweet this, about a knife attack by one person at the Louvre in Paris, in which no one was killed:

Pace yourself? He certainly isn’t.

He wants to see if he can reach record low favorabilities.

Never mind that the polling has not stopped him. The GOP hasn’t stopped him. Checks and balances aren’t stopping him, and he’s still issuing EOs at a rate never before seen in the nation. Governance by diktat.

And they’re all the best people working for him. No one knows what anyone else is doing, why they’re doing it, and are lying their asses off while doing it (see Spicer and Conway).

The Buddhist Churches of America has issued a statement regarding Trump’s unconstitutional - and un-American - Executive Order.

Statement on the Executive Order

The Executive Order signed by President Trump on January 27, 2017 has been causing serious concerns and suffering for many people, especially Muslims and immigrants. It has brought back memories of the unlawful mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II.

Even if the intent of the Executive Order is to protect our citizens from terrorist attacks, we strongly oppose any actions that lead to discrimination against certain groups just because of their ethnicity or faith.

We should remind ourselves that all people deserve to be respected and treated equally under the law. Each faith group should encourage and promote peace and harmony based on its beliefs and principles, and help create a better nation that we can be proud of.

Reverend Kodo Umezu, Bishop, Buddhist Churches of America

BCA are Jodo Shinshu Buddhists, predominantly Japanese-Americans. I knew many BCA members back when I lived in Oregon and they are profoundly good and decent people….and a damn sight more American than Trump and his ilk.

In fact, he’s loving every second of this “outrage.” You’re getting conned conservatives, you’re making him wealthy by treating him like a victim when he’s anything but a victim. Honestly, what we should do is point out that what he’s all about. It’s not even about ideology with this phony piece of shit. He’s just a pathetic child that hates liberals more than anything else so he uses his fame to find other like minded people to do that. I mean at least the 60’s campus radicals actually believed in something. Oh you hate liberals? Well, he’s on pace for a lot - at 18 in two weeks he’s on pace of 468 in his first year. FDR, by comparison, issued 573 executive orders in 1933 (he didn’t take office until March), which worked out to just under 14 orders per week. 468 executive orders would be third most all time, behind 1933 and 1934. Of course there was an actual depression going back then and the government needed to be drastically modernized to meet the very new and very real challenges we faced.

What’s really going to bug me is when the next Democratic president inevitably has a lot of executive power because of what Trump has done and the Republicans will bitch. That’s the thing that pissed me off about the whining about Obama. Bush increased the size of the executive. By doing, that he guaranteed that Obama would be forced to do that and it didn’t help that the GOP didn’t want ot cooperate with Obama at all.

One result of the Trump Presidency may be a reining in of the Executive branch.
It’s now obvious to Democrats that executive orders can do a lot of harm with no checks or balances other than lengthy court battles.

This is one of the things we know about him.

He may have “friends” who can’t borrow money, but only with the air quotes firmly in place. I don’t think there’s a soul on earth, Ivanka and the boys included, who’d, say, help him move a sofa or drive him to the airport at 4 in the morning in the way that a real friend would do for most of us.

Yeah, a few days ago, he was well ahead of FDRs pace. Now, he’s slowed down a bit, but considering that Congress and WH are under GOP control, there’s no reason for him to be issuing these EOs when Congress could pass the laws enacting this stuff. Except doing it the old fashioned way - with legislation - opens up the procedure to public scrutiny and Bannon/Trump lose control of the message and information control. And Democrats would exert what little pressure they have in Congress to slow.

Exactly. We were asked to try to understand the Trump supporters. Were they ever asked to see why we might want Hillary and the policies she supports? Nope. And there was a great article by a young Arab-American woman from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania who talked at length about how the media only focuses on European-Americans in the rust belt and doesn’t tell the stories of people like her who are often made to feel like strangers even though her paternal grandfather worked in the same coal mines as the other men there.

The other day I looked up the number of executive orders by president because one of my coworkers did the “But Obama issued so many”. Obama had the smallest number of EOs for a two term president in about 150 years. On the other hand, the first half of the 20th century was run from the presidency: Each one of the those presidents had thousands of EOs.

The other day I looked up the number of executive orders by president. Obama had the smallest number of EOs for a two term president in about 150 years. On the other hand, the first half of the 20th century was run from the presidency: Each one of the those presidents had thousands of EOs.

It’s all the more remarkable how conservative President Obama was on EO’s when you consider his party only controlled the house for two of the eight years of his presidency.

re: #11 Kragar

This from Chuck Todd is asinine: “Our political discourse would improve if folks in power and in the opposition could spend even just a second in the other’s shoes.”

The understanding deficit is almost entirely on the Republicans, and the empathy deficit is entirely on the Republicans.

You can’t be a Republican and care, and most Republicans believe liberals are literally minions of Satan.

Meanwhile, most liberals see Republicans as wanting to cut taxes on the rich, end regulation of big business and start pointless wars. Since these aren’t easy policies to sell, liberals also tend to believe Republicans foment hate and division in this country via scapegoating in order to do what they really want in the resulting mob hysteria.

I have never seen this critique of the Republican party be successfully challenged in a reality based way, so I think I understand Republicans just fine.

Meanwhile, blacks, Muslims, liberals, women, any ‘othered’ group, if someone acts up, someone does something terrible, someone does something offensive, it’s never just one person, it’s a symptom of a wholly unique and widespread pathology among the entire group. In The True Believer Eric Hoffer explained that one of Mao’s most effective ways of destroying his political enemies within national borders was a strategy of politicizing/indoctrinating young adults and, especially, children. Millions of children literally ratted out brothers, sisters, parents, aunts, uncles, neighbors and teachers for expressing (among themselves) dissenting opinions, and in many cases, merely for failing to parrot official party-in-power propaganda.

Maoist-style networks of child-spies are not very likely to be seen again, thanks to the normalization of near-universal surveillance on-line and in public places. And thanks to modern technologies, online learning is increasingly practical and popular.

If you see optimism in these remarks, you are reading me wrong.

Well, his “friends” are his kids, who are subject to the same restrictions that he’s apparently under (domestic banks wont lend due to the risk). And his ‘friends’ also include Tovarisch Putin. You know, because he plays like that.

Meanwhile, credit is still easily available for businesses across the nation. The financial regs aren’t stopping lending in the slightest bit.

Guy starts tweeting innocuously enough - critical of my comments about Trump and the economy, because Trump’s first economic moves do more harm to the middle class and let the corporations and banks engage in activities that include conflicts of interest and would reduce the wealth of people who invest.

Guy then claims that the economy will soar. I counter with fact that under Obama the DJIA went from 8500 to 19k. Unemployment went from ~8 to 4.9%. He’s like - that rate is BS. You believe it?

Speaking of Germans, The Lives of Others was such a phenomenal movie. Was annoyed that I think NRO or one of the conservative rags tried to say it was a conservative movie because it was anti-communist. You could have made the same movie about fascism, ti was an anti-authoritarian movie. Brilliant though. And the actor who played the Stasi actor lived the East German experience. I think he sadly died not long after the film’s release.

I’m taking to getting interested in escape stories again. I have Colditz on my to visit this summer for my trip. There was a great BBC series called Colditz that I found on YouTube in the 70’s. If you liked the Great Escape, it was more gritty, even had a couple of the same actors- David McCollum was a main star on the show and Nigol Stock was in an episode as a German. The Great Escape I think does romanticize a little of POW life for Allied officers but the best thing it did was to show that there was humanity to the Luftwaffe officers that guarded Allied air men. Story I heard was Goering had great respect for fellow airmen regardless of nationality and that’s why the Allied air men were treated decently by them.

Since we’ve discussed the possibility of arming up before Trump bans gun sales to liberals (with the NRA’s hearty concurrence, of course), I thought I would present a few updates on available hardware.

One interesting trend in the gun biz is the virtual re-invention of the bolt action military rifle. Mossberg in particular has gone all-out with its line of MVP paramilitary bolt rifles.
This is the 16.5” MVP Patrol model:

The Mossberg MVP Patrol is ideal for duty, defense, competition, and hunting applications. The Mossberg MVP Patrol is well made utilizing…..blah, blah

This has all the usual features of the familiar AR-15 “modern sporting rifle” (aka assault weapon) EXCEPT the semi-automatic action: black polymer stock, military sights, the ever-present Picatinny rail accessory mounting device, and a large capacity(for a bolt gun) detachable magazine. The 5.56 version shown will use AR-15 mags in fact.

This would have an interesting advantage in serious, stuff-hits-the-fan social collapse situations because it would happily shoot marginal ammunition that would not reliably cycle the action of a semi-automatic.
There is a whole line of MVP rifles available, with various barrel lengths and other options, including some that chamber the larger 7.62MM/.308 round

Did that with my one friend as suggested. I felt a little bad about so I returned things to normal and I regretted it since he was posting sexist shit about the women in the marches two weeks ago. I’ve had some nice solidarity moments with some others though. One of my cousins lives in the UK, I actually stayed with her and her family when I was overseas two summers ago and I was telling her how all this stuff has me worried, and she was telling me how she’s helped out the refugees there. You don’t need to do a Nazi salute in your class photo when you probably do have some classmates who had family killed by the real thing. Are those kids in Texas actual Nazis? I suspect not but I suspect they’re something else, indifferent to what the Nazis are. And that’s the thing with this anti-PC humor/culture I’m seeing where we don’t try to understand others. I don’t agree with everything that is called PC but given the choice between trying to understand someone and being a childish dick, I choose the former every day time.

I will always remain optimistic…but damn there are days when you read so much that really bums you out.

We do a lot of music on Fridays here at LGF…and I feel like some current mood blues.

This tune is by an Ohio band that had a lead singer with a powerful soulful voice that could knock a crowd out every time they played. His name is Bill Constable, but he went with the stage name of Adam Blessing.

This will be rather unknown because these guys never really made it past being a regional band…but they were very good, especially live. Many times they opened for Joe Walsh and the James Gang.

And the strings (by members of the string section of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra) always added to the sorrowfulness of the blues.

I hope you like it.

I told BeachDem and another Pats fan I know but they shouldn’t let it get in the way of rooting for their team. I guess I can’t really talk too much since my sports teams are actually pretty liberal and Democratic in how they’re run. My favorite baseball team’s President expressed understanding for the people in Baltimore upset over Freddie Gray’s death and they’re very labor friendly (Angelos made his money representing Absentos victims) and the coach of my favorite football team hosted a Hillary fundraiser and the owner was a big Obama booster and our ambassador to Ireland. I’ll admit it though, knowing about that and NE makes it easier for me to want Atlanta to win but I really want Atlanta to win from a pure sports fan perspective, if my team ain’t in it, I almost always choose the team that hasn’t won one before.

Really good piece by Charles P. Pierce today:

Donald Trump Has Hijacked Democracy. The Response Is Up to the Country.
Two weeks in, we already know what we’re dealing with.

esquire.com

Some excerpts:

It has not been a very encouraging week for democracy here, but there are a couple of lessons to be drawn from all the activity, and all the non-activity, that’s taken place. First, and this has been obvious for a while, but it became vivid and clear over the past five days, there is absolutely no legitimate political opposition within the Republican party to anything the president* says or does...

Second, it really is time to let up on the Democrats a little…The Democrats fought as hard as they could in committee against these nominees, and with every tool available to them… They even forced the Republicans twice to change committee rules in order to approve nominees with Republican votes only… They have pulled every delaying tactic available to a minority in the Senate and they’ve done so full in the knowledge that Mitch McConnell is perfectly willing to blow up whatever political norms—Hi there, Merrick Garland!—and change whatever political norms are in the way of getting what he and his president want…

The wires and pulleys by which Trumpism is hijacking democracy have been exposed. The rest is up to the country.

194
HappyWarrior  Feb 3, 2017 • 12:50:28pm

Same thing with Milo’s followers. They’ve done plenty of death threats on people too. So yeah hard for me to really see either Spencer or Milo Y as the martyr they so despaerately want to sell themselves as. Which is kind of funny to me because they insist that liberals are the ones who see themselves as victims. I never see myself as a victim. I see myself as someone who has some bad luck but try to constantly improve myself.

Having read the earlier analysis in IPN’s 2008 book based on a much more limited material it was already clear that Walesa’s collaboration was proven, despite his protestations. And he is still in denial, still calling all the documents “fake” and the experts biased, while offering various implausible stories as explanation of some of the documents. His achievements were enormous but he himself is destroying his legacy by being a lying weasel.

Even if it is accepted (incorrectly) that Clinton = Goldman Sachs, how does that make Trump (or any Republican) any better?

How is MOAR Goldman Sachs + normal Republican bad craziness + Trump’s extra special bad craziness worse than just a (supposed) Goldman Sachs candidate.

Snowden is an idiot, as is anyone else who subscribed to this kind of completely addled ‘reasoning’.

Ummm…. Iran’s proxies do not include Islamic State or al Qaeda.

Sunni/Shi’a thing and all that.

al Qaeda has a running beef against Iran and Shi’a who they consider apostate.

So, if Yemen is supposedly where Trump’s going as a proxy for Iran, that’s a pretty awful place to start.

It’s still a good idea to go after AQAP and IS.

Not saying you’re insecure in your manhood if you own one btw but I am saying one doesn’t need to own a gun to be comfortable in his masculinity and I resent the gun culture suggesting if you’re not goo goo for guns, you’re somehow a wuss.

Quite so. No decision about lethal weapons should be based on feelings but on a rational evaluation of the need, and of the consequences both of using the weapon and, conversely, of being unarmed. The NRA-dominated gun culture fails massively on all counts.
The probability of a threat should be evaluated, but also the probability of individually becoming a target if such a threat does appear. For example, there is almost a 100% chance of armed attacks by Trump-Bannon inspired vigilantes. What are the chances of being individually targeted though, and how good are the chances of adequately defending yourself? In our situation, today, a lot depends on where you live, as well as upon the reliability of local law enforcement. I’m at the extreme edge of the threat evaluation envelope, in a rural area but surrounded by masses of violent wingnuts from the nearby DFW metroplex, with an over-tasked sheriff, and with state law enforcement under the command of a border line fascist lunatic.

We left town last year. Drove home during the game. (I figured there would be fewer drunks on the road at that point.)

Was the best decision we could have made.

Right hand doesn’t know what left hand is saying. Lying and obfuscating continues apace.

See the latest news re: number of visas revoked:

Up to 60,000 foreigners from seven majority-Muslim countries had their visas canceled after President Donald Trump’s executive order blocked them from traveling to the U.S., the State Department said Friday.

That figure contradicts a Justice Department lawyer’s statement Friday during a court hearing in Virginia about the ban. The lawyer in that case said that about 100,000 visas had been revoked.

The State Department clarified that the higher figure includes diplomatic and other visas that were actually exempted from the travel ban, as well as expired visas.

Trump’s order, issued last Friday, temporarily bans travel for people from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya and Yemen. It also temporarily halts the U.S. refugee program.

60,000 or 100,000? Which is it. And what is their status if they’re currently in the US. Visa getting revoked would make those people deportable IMO. And that’s entirely the point of the Bannon/Trump policy: to get rid of Muslims from the US.

My boys in black catching some flack from SOME people for “suddenly” being political.
a)DM has ALWAYS been political since Martin took over in 1982. The entire “Construction Time Again” album is a social-political statement. Much of “A Broken Frame” is. “New Dress” is about political manipulation of the media, “Master and Servant”, “People are People”…..on and on
b)This song was recorded, finished, and publicly previewed in October. Well before the election. It just so happened that it panned out the way Martin predicted.
c) It may seem overt to some because instead of hiding the meaning of his lyrics in metaphor and grey area interpretation, he chose a straight forward, no mistake, “this is my stance” approach.
People being bothered by this pretty much means they arent smart enough to read between the lines, or havent really been paying attention to Martins lyrics over the last 30 years….like…at all.

Lyrics BTW:
People are people so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
So we’re different colours
And we’re different creeds
And different people have different needs
It’s obvious you hate me
Though I’ve done nothing wrong
I never even met you
So what could I have done
I can’t understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand
People are people so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
Help me understand
Now you’re punching and you’re kicking
And you’re shouting at me
I’m relying on your common decency
So far it hasn’t surfaced
But I’m sure it exists
It just takes a while to travel
From your head to your fist
I can’t understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand

In a way, I think the fundies are right, we have lost our morality as a people but not for the reason they think. No, it’s because it’s become more acceptable to turn someone away because you don’t like their religion, their sexual orientation, their nationality, etc.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels are a Shiite faction and are in fact heavily supported by Iran. They attacked two US destroyers with missiles back in October and we fired back.

WASHINGTON — An American warship stationed off the coast of Yemen fired cruise missiles on Thursday at radar installations that the Pentagon said had been used by Yemeni insurgents to target another American warship in two missile attacks in the last four days.

The strikes against the Houthi rebels marked the first time the United States has become involved militarily in the civil war between the Houthis, an indigenous Shiite group with loose connections to Iran, and the Yememi government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia and other Sunni nations. The strikes were approved by President Obama, said Peter Cook, the Pentagon spokesman, who warned of more to come if American ships were fired upon again.

There’s reason to think the missiles fired from Houthi territory were sourced from Iran.

The missiles fired on Sunday were variants of the so-called Silkworm missile, and both also fell harmlessly into the water. The Silkworm is a type of coastal defense cruise missile that Iran has been known to use, and the Iran has backed the Shiite Houthi rebels.

The problem with targeting the Houthis however is that, like in Syria, we’re picking sides in a shit show that has no conceivable “good” outcome. Either way we slice it getting involved means we’re putting our thumb on the scale either for fanatical Al-Qaeda aligned, Saudi backed Sunnis, or for Houthi rebels backed by Iran.

That’s certainly possible. Sergey is right that people do lie but some times things do get forgotten especially if as you say the family member in question doesn’t like talking about it. Sigh — so I use a To Do list manager program called “ToDoist” — I love it. It integrates nicely with my email client — and even my Amazon Alexa. So they recently posted a blog post in support of immigrants.

So you know what happened. The comment section is filled with offended RWNJs saying that they are canceling their premium subscriptions and uninstalling the app.

Guess I will renew even though I’m using paper for most of my daily tracking. It’s still good for general tracking, I just need to figure out how to integrate it better.

As I was reading the pretrial docs of the Frankfurt Auschwitz trial, there was one interrogation where a man claimed to have been an inmate with a ridiculously high number (like 400000 something). The investigators pointed that out to him but he never admitted that he was, ahem, fantasizing.

The concentration camp episode of BoB is fairly intense. Far less intense than the reality, of course.

Early in the episode, it shows the guys clearing a town, going from house to house, and, as soldiers have done since forever, grabbing valuables and souvenirs. In one particularly luxurious place, the lady of the house catches one of them stealing her stuff, and silently stares at him with icy disdain. He meets her eye momentarily, then looks away, ashamed.

Later, after the camp has been found and the locals drafted to bury the dead, the same soldier sees the woman on burial detail. This time her face is full of shame and anguish and it’s she who looks away.

The first tweet is referring to an allegedly Jewish woman whose granma was in Au. (though later the author confesses that he made the photo of a lady he didn’t know, so how would he know she’s Jewish?).

The second tweet points out the impossibility of the claimed number on the sign.

Can you imagine coming from a country which was allied with the 3rd reich during WWII? There is a reason why Finlands formal state of war with Germany lasted until 1956(sic(!)). There is a reason why many finnish kids still get taught to recognize the beast fascism from miles away. There is a reason why even Timo Soini, far-right politician in Finland, basically thinks President Clownface von Fuckstick should go fuck himself re: a certain decision.

And still the marks on the right think I’m overreacting, that it’s not the same. But us finns, we’ve seen the movie, we know how it ends…

Breitbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos lobbed anti-Semitic insults at a BuzzFeed reporter in a talk in December, given as part of his “Dangerous Faggot” tour of American college campuses.

Yiannopoulos told fans at Minnesota State University that Joe Bernstein, a media writer at BuzzFeed News, represents “a typical example of a sort of thick-as-pig shit media Jew, who has all these sort of right, P.C. politics.”
