Trump Horror, Day 15: Federal Judge Halts Trump’s Muslim Ban

The fight against autocracy
Politics • Views: 40,099

Don’t you just love how the media are obediently adopting Trump’s own deceptive name for his ban on Muslims entering the US? “Travel ban” sounds so much better than what it really is, a Muslim ban.

But at least today we have some good news about this unconstitutional horror: a federal judge has ordered a nationwide halt to the ban.

A temporary restraining order, that is, and you can be sure Trump’s goons will challenge it quickly, because these kinds of oppressive measures are important in building the autocracy Trump wants.

The tiny-fisted fascist immediately fired up his cell phone and ranted like a standard right wing moron on Twitter, of course, mocking Federal Judge James Robart, a George W. Bush appointee, as a “so-called judge.”

UPDATE at 2/4/17 10:40:23 am by Charles Johnson

Here’s Judge Robart’s order:

Has Richard Spencer been reported to Twitter yet, or are the libertarian dudebros that run it hiding behind Freeze Peach?

If Holocaust denial can’t be held as criminal, how could something significantly lesser like doxxing be held that way? Both seek to harass their targets.

Do remember that Rage Furby’s WeSearchR got permabanned when they threatened to doxx the guy hero who punched Spencer in the face.

Spencer is setting up the victim card to roll with at any point.

The Lefsetz Letter: Why we’ve Got no Protest Songs

1. Mariah Carey

Bob Dylan looked up to Woody Guthrie, today’s nitwits admire Mariah Carey. That’s right, she hit almost three decades ago and dominated the nineties and what was her message? Empty hedonism. Sung by a woman with great pipes. So, that’s who today’s TV contestants emulate. They figure someone else will write the songs, after all if you know how to sing… Clive and company made all those other victors winners.

2. Income inequality

Everybody’s so busy struggling, they don’t want to take any steps that might hold them back. Therefore, if you get ahead, you want to stay there. Kinda like Taylor Swift, the biggest star in America, she’s been mum about Trump, because she doesn’t want to lose any potential fans. And if Swift is mum, what are the odds anybody else is gonna voice a controversial opinion? The best and the brightest avoid music, because they know the odds are long and if you don’t make it and haven’t been investing in your straight career you’re screwed. Only the poor and disadvantaged commit to music, and they see it as a vehicle out of the dumps, not one of self-expression. They want some of that money and lifestyle, and, ironically, those who make it hang with billionaires and emulate them. Our society is dominated by money, not culture. After all, we elected as President a man whose sole calling card is he’s supposedly rich. We used to elect big thinkers, no more.

3. No sense of history

Dylan, et al, emerged out of the folk scene, with its long history of standing up for people’s rights and protests. There’s no folk scene today, there’s no sense of history at all. Will kids tomorrow emulate the English bluesmen who emulated the delta bluesmen? Possibly so, but there’s no evidence of this yet.

4. Hip-hop culture

Used to be about speaking truth to power, now it’s about lifestyle. Hip-hop is the most vibrant music we’ve got, but it’s become self-referential, kinda like metal. You can’t understand today’s metal unless you listened to decades of it before. As for hip-hop culture… This is dangerous, but I’ll wade in. The African-American has been screwed from Day One in America and he sees it as a badge of honor to get his and rip-off the man. So rappers don’t turn down corporate endorsements, they don’t say no to power, they want to become brands with all that money. And it’s understandable, since these same men who run the brands have been screwing them from time immemorial, and the opportunity to take back is hard to turn down. And my inbox will now fill up with missives telling me I don’t understand, and maybe I don’t, but that proves the point that everybody’s afraid of wading in, discussing the issues, especially if they’re murky. Funny how Republicans will say the seemingly unpopular, especially Trump, and Democrats are so busy pussyfooting, afraid to piss a single person off, that they end up saying nothing.

More at the link above.

So allegedly the catalyst behind the judge’s order was the irreparable damage the ban was causing to employers of Washington state.

Democrats really need to reposition themselves as being pro-business and Republicans anti-business. Yes, Democrats are going to support fair wages and environmental regulations, but all wrapped up in a PREDICTABLE business-friendly environment in a level playing field that allows businesses to compete fairly with each other.

What Republicans have done is create absolute chaos. And business can’t operate in this kind of environment.

re: #345 HappyWarrior

Do you guys agree with my accessment about the three wings within the Trump admin power structure? Is it too simplified? Too complex? Thoughts. It’s really difficult to decide which one Trump is favoring the most at the moment. One might say the racists since he’s pushed their EO but he also did the corporatists a huge solid by signing the EO that weakened Dodd-Frank.

So I’m leaning toward a different sort of break of the structure. It starts with a core assumption, that there are two tiers to the power structure. There are the people who were part of Team Trump before he won the nomination, and there are the people who came after.

The second tier tends to break as you said, with the caveat that these are the people who Trump - or someone in the first tier - thinks Trump needs, wants to connect with, or owes. At the same time they’re expendables.

The real power is that first tier. And here I’m still working out what they are more accurately.

I mean, you’ve got Kushner. He’s the corporatist who also happens to be a racist who is driven by the need to prove Daddy was right.

You’ve got Bannon who at root is bent on destroying America-as-is so he can make America-as-desired. It’s important, I think, to remember that even though the America he wants is an internally inconsistent mix of isolationist and white center of a world empire, the need to destroy what is comes first.

Not easy to categorize, and the rest of the core is just as complex.

But I think that the big cracks to come are driven by the tier break more than ideological breaks.

starherald.com (full monty of pig excrement at the link)

But for too long, faraway bureaucrats in Washington have believed, and behaved, as if they know better than Nebraskans when it comes to keeping water clean. In May 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Army Corps of Engineers issued a final rule revising the definition of “waters of the United States” or WOTUS for all Clean Water Act programs.

Washington’s harmful rule greatly expands the scope of federally protected waters, far beyond the original intent of Congress. This heavy-handed regulation would affect all Nebraskans, our families, communities, and small businesses. One of the more cumbersome provisions redefines “navigable waterways” to include run-off streams and ditches that are dry most of the year.

Nebraskans know this definition would be laughable if it didn’t also pose serious economic harm to so many Nebraskan families. If your property has a low spot that fills up after a heavy rain, you could be subject to severe restrictions on the use of your own land as well as expensive fines.

TV networks hiking ad rates for shows Trump watches

MSNBC and Fox News are capitalizing on President Donald Trump’s TV watching habits, dramatically increasing issue advocacy advertising rates in recent weeks as companies and outside groups try to influence Trump and his top lieutenants.

The ad rates for “Morning Joe” have more than doubled post-election, according to one veteran media buyer. Trump, who reportedly watches the show most mornings, has a close relationship with “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough, and they talk regularly.

Fox News’ “The O’Reilly Factor” and other primetime programs on Fox News have boosted their rates about 50 percent. Trump also is a frequent viewer of the network’s primetime shows.

“The president’s media habits are so predictable, advertisers migrate to those areas,” said one media buyer.

We do make good props when the GOP wants to claim some moral high ground about people they don’t care about (why do we send foreign aid to country X when we have homeless vets). Donald J. Trump Statement on Preventing Muslim Immigration

(New York, NY) December 7th, 2015, — Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on. According to Pew Research, among others, there is great hatred towards Americans by large segments of the Muslim population. Most recently, a poll from the Center for Security Policy released data showing “25% of those polled agreed that violence against Americans here in the United States is justified as a part of the global jihad” and 51% of those polled, “agreed that Muslims in America should have the choice of being governed according to Shariah.” Shariah authorizes such atrocities as murder against non-believers who won’t convert, beheadings and more unthinkable acts that pose great harm to Americans, especially women.

Mr. Trump stated, “Without looking at the various polling data, it is obvious to anybody the hatred is beyond comprehension. Where this hatred comes from and why we will have to determine. Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life. If I win the election for President, we are going to Make America Great Again.” - Donald J. Trump

If they figure out a way to circumvent separation of church and state to ban Islam, they will.

But it won’t stop with Islam: it will be every religion the Dominionists do not agree with. That would be every faith that is not a wingnut version of Christianity.

Given the opportunity, every moderate denomination of Christianity (plus every other non-Christian faith, and atheists) would be targeted. This sort of religious purge is quite common throughout history, and there is no particular reason to believe that if wingnuts could do it, they wouldn’t.

When a religious faith is weak, it cries out for protection from the government. When it is powerful, it seeks perfection (which means eliminate the heretics). When it gets its hands on the levers of governance, all other faiths are in danger.

Feature, not bug. I am sure the wingnut county GOP guy is fully aware of what happened at Kent State.

And this goes back to our discussion up the thread: If someone takes him up on it (shoots protesters), will he be dragged into court for inciting violence? No. Should such speech (stochastic terrorism) be protected as free speech (see also Holocaust denial)?

76
HappyWarrior  Feb 4, 2017 • 11:53:58am

I mean goddamn. If we just say hey “you shouldn’t say that”, we’re a bunch of wusses to these fuckwards. We rightfully get angry over a GOP appointed official using an event that killed four people as his wish for what should happen to protesters, and then we’re intolerant. If he had simply said, “Listen, I was angry when I read about what happened at UC, I said something stupid and immature.” I think he’d be surprised but alot of people would back off but when you double down and claim as he did that he wasn’t calling for violence and then to bitch about the left being “intolerant.” Yep, you’re part of the problem buddy.

Oh, I know he knows what it is. My point is that it’s his reaction that makes things al lthe more worst. To claim that he wasn’t calling for violence is absurd. However, if he had after the outcry said something to the effect that he posted something stupid impulsively, I personally might give him a little more slack but when he tries to claim A) he wasn’t calling for violence and in fact the opposite and B) whine about the left calling him out for the dipshit he is, that’s what pisses people off. I guess the hardest ords in the English language for a GOP official to say are “I spoke stupidly and impulsively and I really do apologize, I have a position of authority and I really should be aware of that in the future.” But nah, whine about the left calling you act for wishing a Kent State.

Via Politico:

The little-noticed section, appearing immediately after the travel ban,
calls for the government to develop a “uniform screening standard and
procedure” for all individuals seeking to enter the United States. As
written, it appears to require all visitors to go through the same
vetting measures, regardless of where they come from or how long they
intend to stay.

I’m your Rusyn cousin from another great great great whatever grandparent heh. But seriously, I mean we all say stupid stuff when we’re angry. I know I have. I really think this guy wouldn’t have gotten the reaction he did if he had sincerely realized why he was wrong instead of doubling down the way he did and insisting it wasn’t meant to call for more violence and then to whine about the left calling him out. Does he really think if a Dem official had called for a Kent State on Tea Party protesters that the reaction would been “Oh, he wasn’t calling for violence, he was just calling for less violence.”

With the caveat that yes, this Adamini guy is an asshole and what he said is totally assholy—I can’t believe this has become a big national outrage.

He’s the county Republican party secretary in a county with 57,000 registered voters that went for Clinton by 4 points (and it wasn’t because of minority voters, as the county is close to 90% white.) My guess would be that the county Rep. party organization probably has about 100 active members. The guy has a whopping 183 Twitter followers.

I’ve heard equally stupid shit said by people behind me in line at the grocery store, but it didn’t make national news.

Trump will need to be buried like George Pullman. Meaning - secured deep so people don’t mess with his corpse. How’d you like to be such an asshole that you have to secure yourself AFTER you’re dead?

In 1897, Pullman died of a heart attack at the age of 66, only three years after the strike. Fearing that some of his former employees or other labor supporters might try to dig up his body, his family arranged for his remains to be placed in a lead-lined mahogany coffin, which was then sealed inside a block of concrete. At the cemetery, a large pit had been dug at the family plot. At its base and walls were 18 inches of reinforced concrete. The coffin was lowered, and covered with asphalt and tarpaper. More concrete was poured on top, followed by a layer of steel rails bolted together at right angles, and another layer of concrete. The entire burial process took two days. His monument, featuring a Corinthian column flanked by curved stone benches, was designed by Solon Spencer Bemen, the architect of the company town of Pullman.[12]

Because if intolerance is not called out (or an incitement to murder) it spreads.

It is much simpler to bat it down now than if say in twenty years this guy were a state or Federal senator. His career deserves to be deep sixed for calling for murder.

Equally stupid shit in the grocery store should be also called out. I have no problem humiliating a person in public that calls for murder.

I swear dude if I can live without hearing “Neo-Lib” ever again, I’ll die happy. Bernie’s campaign showed me there’s a part of the left that I really don’t like and one that I hope never takes charge of the Democratic Party. I get a lot of their stuff in my TL since some of my old friends are Bernie fans and while I think their hearts are definitely in the right spots often, their heads aren’t.

I sympathize with the students that supported Bernie more than the older adults. The kids, this was their first campaign. I was that kid once when I was a Kucinich supporter fifteen-fourteen years ago but the older adults? It’s harder for me since they remember how Nader equated Goer to Bush and then shocker Bush showed how he was different than Gore. I also remember there bellyaching about Kerry because he wasn’t Dean and I think Kerry ended up a far better voice for progressive values than Dean has been in the years since.

Sergey, I’m forgetting but Bernie had one FP adviser that you really didn’t like. Damn, I forget the guy’s name already but he had written articles in praise of Putin I believe. The trend I’ve seen with Sanders that did worry me though I of course agree that he would be much better than Trump or really any Republican is that he was showing a tendency to reward those who agreed with him rather than the Team of Rivals approach Obama took. I think we no doubt would have had Tulsi Gabbard in a Sanders administration and knowing what what we do now about Rep. Gabbard that bothers me a lot. It would have also meant Nina Turner who quite honestly isn’t qualified to be part of a Presidential admin.

They are not evidence in the sense that they can be used in court (other than circumstantial evidence). If the crime if incitement to murder were actually prosecuted, they could be used to obtain a search warrant against an ISP or Twitter.

They can be used in such things as a political campaign, an argument on the Internet, &c. They can be used to search for other egregious statements.

I think they might be getting judges mixed up with attorney generals. I found this on media matters regarding Bush vs. Clinton re: firing of attorney generals.

GOPers are determined to resurrect the MBF nonsensical BS that Democrats did to Bork what they’re threatening to do with Gorsuch.

This is all such total BS.

Bork was granted hearings. He lost a committee vote, but instead of withdrawing his name from consideration, he asked for a full consideration from the US Senate. The US Senate voted him down, with a bunch of Republicans voting against him. His confirmation was denied by a bipartisan group of Senators.

Now, let’s advance to Garland - who was not only denied a hearing, but never got a vote. The reason? GOP bullshit. They obstructed and blocked a qualified candidate from getting a hearing or vote. Even the GOPers who moments before Obama nominated Garland had stated Garland would be acceptable. They all lied and blocked Garland for no reason other than to deny Obama the right of seating a nominee on the Supreme Court.

Even up to the election, you had GOPers claiming that they would block Clinton appointments to the US Supreme Court.

That’s not Borking. That’s absolute and total abdication of their oaths of office to advice and consent. This isn’t delaying a vote or voting the nominee down. This is pure obstruction for the sake of trying to shift the balance of the court to GOP hands.

Now, Gorsuch is facing opposition from Democrats who lack the numbers to stop him. But they’ll try - as they should. It is a stolen seat and Trump needs to be challenged on every single nomination - we’ve seen rank failures among his nominees when challenged with basic questions about the positions sought. Gorsuch is qualified - but no more or less than Garland. And it will forever be known as a #StolenSeat. The GOP must be held to pay for this treachery.

Teen Vogue trolling Republicans:

It would appear that there is a campaign on Twitter to send a subscription to Teen Vogue to every Republican in Congress.

Since Internet and cell phone service are unavailable in my part of the state, no one has yet subscribed for Deb Fischer, Ben Sasse, or Adrian Smith. Someone from outside the area would need to step up.

Most of the Republican Senators and Representatives have already been given gift subscriptions to Teen Vogue. My understanding is it takes a $5 donation to do this.

He’s got to brush up on what a law is. Who makes it. How it operates. Checks and balances. Judicial review. It’s all foreign to him. And he doesn’t care because he’s going the route of EOs, even as his party controls both House and Senate.

Speaking of - even with the GOP firmly in control in the House and Senate, Trump can’t move his nominees and they’re still sitting in committee. That’s a huge failure by Trump since he’s supposed to have someone steer the nominations to confirmation. That person has failed miserably - mostly because the people who he’s picked are miserable failures too. Incompetent. Unprepared. And intent on destroying the very departments they seek to run. Everyone knows it, including the party, but they have gone along with this charade. They are getting what they want, and this mess is all on the GOP.

New documents confirm that President Donald Trump retains a direct tie to his business interests through a revocable trust now being overseen by one of his adult sons and a longtime executive of the Trump Organization.

Trump is the sole beneficiary of the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, which is tied to his Social Security number as the taxpayer identification number, according to documents published online by the investigative nonprofit ProPublica. And Trump can revoke the trust, which was amended three days before his inauguration, at any time.

The details about the trust were included in a Jan. 27 letter to the Washington liquor board that notes Donald Trump Jr. and Allen Weisselberg are its new trustees. The Trump trust holds a liquor license for the hotel that opened last fall in the federally owned Old Post Office building. The trust contains a mix of cash from Trump’s sales of stock investments over the summer and his physical and intellectual properties, such as Trump Tower in New York, Mar-a-Lago in Florida and branding rights.

For those keeping score: The National Park Service maintains a searchable online database that allows the lookup of Civil War veterans from both sides. The webpage url is “not found” today.

All of our major NATO allies did. Norway too. My dad’s watched a Netflix show I believe about NATO guys in Afghanistan.

Damn. Glad I have copies of my second great grandpa’s pension record. I’ve thought about joining a Union veteran descendants association at some point.

The Aussies went to Iraq with us too even though it was greatly unpopular among their population and Trump has the nerve to say he treated the Aussie PM the way he did because “they don’t respect us.” Fuck you, Donald, American and Aussie troops have bled together in many conflicts.

Title IX signed by the huge feminist, Richard Milhous Nixon.

From King of the Hill:

COACH: This all goes back to Title IX, Dick Nixon’s biggest mistake.

From King of the Hill:

Heh not that Watergate or Chilean coup thing. I think that’s what people need to know about today’s conservatives though. They want to overturn things that were implemented by conservative politicians well before many of us wereborn. They not only oppose Roe but also Eisenstadt and even Griswold in some cases.

Charles P. Pierce has a way with words, part the infinity: talking about the DeVos hearings:

I was only half-listening because, frankly, I’d heard it all before until Lankford came up with a line of argument so toweringly ahistorical and inapt that I’m surprised every book in the Library of Congress across the street didn’t hurl itself off the shelf in despair because it had given up trying to educate anybody.

esquire.com

Pierce also subscribes to the solution to the dilemma of being a Patriots’ fan.

Despite the obvious ideological problems, I am staying a local yokel as regards to the big American football brawl on Sunday, but I heartily endorse Josh Gondelman’s solution for politically aware Patriots fans. For every touchdown, send some money to the progressive organization of your choice. I find this a very American way of solving a major dilemma.

Instead of tweeting nonsense, donnie should be looking at what’s going on right outside of his “winter white house” right this moment.
