Betsy Devos is a big fat liar (I know, shocka):

“The following virtual academies have four-year cohort graduation rates at or above 90 percent”, replied DeVos to Murray…

Nevada Virtual Academy was the one with a 100 percent graduation rate according to DeVos. Wrong, says the state of Nevada, it’s actually 63 percent.

Ohio Virtual Academy has a 92 percent graduation rate, claimed DeVos. Wrong, says the state of Ohio, it’s 53 percent.

Utah Virtual Academy has a 96 percent graduation rate, said DeVos. Wrong, says the state of Utah, it’s 42 percent.

DeVos’ numbers, which were lifted without citation, appear to come from a cheery report from K-12, Inc.

Quietly, so quietly, I just released a beta test version of our new two factor authentication system. If you’d like to try it out, go to Account Settings and you’ll see a new section in there. Hopefully it’s all obvious enough to figure out - but I’ll be writing an article to explain it all soon.

If you have an Android device, here’s a page at Google Play with a bunch of free authenticator apps you can use. If you have an iPhone, I really like this one because it’s very simple to use and has a Mac desktop version that syncs automatically: itunes.apple.com

ENDQUOTE: Mark 8:36

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

For centuries we have repeated and reflected on those words from the Bible, often drawing comparisons to this or that in our own life and time.

But have we ever pondered what it will profit a man who gains the whole world but who has no soul to lose? Now might be a good time to start.

This is a lie. The Court in Boston issued a TRO, then refused to extend it. This isn’t in conflict with Judge Robarts’ decision to issue his own TRO.

Segal responded, “If your honor’s question is, ‘Does the word ‘Muslim’ make a profound presence in this executive order?,’ my answer is that it doesn’t. But the president described what he was going to do as a Muslim ban and then he proceeded to carry it out.”

“Am I to take the words of an executive at any point before or after election as a part of that executive order?”

This is where the Court in Boston clearly erred. Yes, you are definitely supposed to look at clear, contemporaneous statements of motivation by the executive about the design and intent behind an EO. The EO itself carves out exemptions for minority religions, that is itself prima facie evidence of an intent to discriminate against the majority religion (Islam) of the targeted countries. Giuliani’s statements also betray that bigoted and illegal intent.

Facially is a legal term. I’m not an attorney (but I work for one), so grain of salt for me, but in layman’s terms here’s how I’d explain it:

Atty: “This is pie that everyone has to eat.”
Judge: “You’ve forcefully argued that it’s pie, but I’m concerned that it was baked by a lunatic and contains week-old raw pork, chewed gum, and garbage, held together with rubber bands.”
Atty: “Our argument is that it’s shaped like a pie, therefore it’s edible pie.”

This is actually a serious question—facially legitimate (which is a standard that would favor Hair Furor’s order) versus rationally based (which asks if the order makes sense given its intentions). And many rights cases do turn on this type of distinction.

That said, I don’t envy the lawyer making the argument. She’s arguing what her employer (Trump) is saying. She may not agree.

It’s just amazing the shit Trump will say about our country and his sycophant supporters will just go yep yep and these are the same assholes that question the left’s patriotism. Trump literally said our country was no better than Russia in terms of morality.

Jesus, I hope the guy with the ‘football’ has one of his eyes on Trump’s tweets at all times.

The handlers replaced it for our safety. The football now contains an old Trapper Keeper - the one with the awesome jet picture on it. By the time the guy goes back to the other room and gets the real codes, Trump will have been distracted and changed the subject.

Her name is Michelle R. Bennett, who has represented the US government many times over several years, judging from my cursory googling. I’m going to retract my criticism of her hesitant argument in favor of your interpretation. Her client has no case.

They’ll just have to deal.

I think definition #4 in the Urban Dictionary is most apt:

Goat Rodeo
A situation that is hopelessly fucked up. The worst of three stages of goat-ness. First is the Goat Rope, defined elsewhere.

Then there is the utilitarian Goat Fuck. This normally requires a serious amount of work to unfuck.

Lastly, there is the Goat Rodeo. The worst of the three, it is beyond even profanity. It describes a situation that involves many individuals screw ups, and implies that the fuck up is already well underway, meaning that there is no hope in stopping the mess.

Quietly, so quietly, I just released a beta test version of our new two factor authentication system. If you’d like to try it out, go to Account Settings and you’ll see a new section in there. Hopefully it’s all obvious enough to figure out - but I’ll be writing an article to explain it all soon.

When you do, may I request some information about how you’re handling privacy issues behind the scenes? Who knows what kind of insane subpoenas a Sessions-run DOJ might issue - which is why I’ve become even more cautious (paranoid?) about where my cell number gets shared and saved. It’s not that I don’t trust you…just curious as to what sort of safeguards you’re implementing to keep all of our privacy as intact as possible, under the circumstances.

He may try, but it would be very hard to sell. I’m sure the military knows that war with Iran would be insane. NO allies (except maybe Israel?) would have anything to do with it, either.

Also, if it looks like he’s fomenting war, the number of people hitting the streets would make what’s happened so far look half-hearted — and that appears to deter Congressmen (purse strings…) even if it doesn’t penetrate the White House.

I have a Republican friend. When I point out particularly horrible things of the past two weeks, instead of saying “Did you see the latest shitty thing Trump did?” I’ve been saying “Did you see the latest shitty thing the Republican Party did?”

I believe it’s having an effect. Not much of one, to be honest, but more of an effect than any of my previous arguments over the years.

So I took the cat to the vet today (routine annual exam), and the vet looked at my pink fingernails and said they were very nice, were they for Valentine’s Day? “Pussy power, actually,” I said. She said she liked that even better.

Later in the afternoon, I went to the No Ban, No Wall rally in San Francisco. (Cat saw me getting ready and went to hide under the desk — afraid I was going to take her to the vet a second time on the same day, I expect. Dumb animal.) The crowd was pretty good. I left after about an hour and a half (oh, for the stamina of my youth…), along with some other olds, but the second shift was still arriving, even more than an hour into the rally.

Romney showed all his tough talk on Trump was just that. I’ll contend that most of the Republicans spoke out against Trump because they were afraid of him losing and thus damaging their brand. Paradox? He’s won and may damage their brand even worse.

I know it sounds naive and silly to say, but I absolutely take the point of the person who posted the other day “Why is Trump so angry?”. I can’t recall who wrote the post - I’m thinking of a short article by a guy who observed that Trump has a lot to be happy about, and the author was baffled by how angry Trump seems to be, despite having lived a long, wealthy life.

I want to say to Trump: “Seriously, dude, what’s your beef? Your whole life is gold-plated and you’re famous and you have a family that probably loves you. You have everything. So why are you such a dick to people you’ve never met?”

I know the answers already, but I’d like to see him confronted in a way that forces him to answer on his own.

Somewhere in Florida, a lonely, friendless, angry man sits poised in a gaudy room, TV set to channel 5, waiting for SNL to start. His tiny, sausage-like fingers are poised on his phone, ready to tweet…

Shoot. BeachDem if you’re here. What was the name of that four part Irish history series you recommended to me that was on Google videos? I accidently closed out of my windows by my mistake.

“She’s no Al Gore”. Oh, for fuck’s sake! What was Al Gore doing on 4Feb2001, do you suppose? Leading the resistance? Or eating too much and growing a beard?

Bernie would have won. Blaming voters is like a football team blaming the fans.

Bernie stans are really bad at analogies.

It’s a long read I concede so you can read it tomorrow.

Yeah, that SC decision [edit] and Federal Election Commission v. Wisconsin Right to Life, Inc were exactly what Olbermann was sounding alarms over, years ago —removing limits to corporations’ influence on elections.[/edit] He began with talk about the Dred-Scott vs Sandford decision being the worst and most consequential SC decision ever (ie, Civil War) —until that new one.

He detailed long list of predicted horrificly bad consequences to be expected, leading inexorably to an end of our democracy. Most of his predictions have clearly happened already. A few appear to be “pending”.

On second thought, “The World Turned Upside Down” is less a dirge than another excuse for the British army to get sloshed. And after all isn’t that a hella lot better then them killing wogs with pointy sticks? //

Skidoo is proof of the adage “the whole is less than the sum of the parts.” A set of amazing talents, not the least of which is director Otto Preminger.

I just finished watching it and though no great shakes, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I remembered. And Harry Nilsson’s score helped a whole hell of a lot.

Jackie Gleason was my least favorite part of the flick, but he usually is. I’ve never been a fan.
