An Absolutely Amazing Solo Acoustic Guitar Version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by the Great Tommy Emmanuel

I’ve never seen anyone who can pull off those false harmonics the way Tommy does in this video. It’s mind-blowing.

One of the most beautiful takes on such a classic song. “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” is a featured video on Tommy Emmanuel’s new DVD “Music Gone Public”, a collection of “greatest hits” from Tommy’s previous PBS airings. This DVD is available for purchase by heading to http://tommyemmanuel.com/music-gone-public-dvd-release/

One of our local pizza joints has a signed picture of this guy on their wall.

I’ve been privileged to catch Tommy Emmanuel just once, in a joint in a wee upstate hamlet of New York that frankly was not the best showcase for any musician, or any listener for that matter. Anf it was an unexpectedly cold and windy night, and there were twelve people tops in the audience.

And he killed. ‘Tween sets he hung out with our table and was just the nicest, most talented guy. My friends in that part of the Catskills are mostly musicians, so that no doubt helped with mellowing any harshness. I was a fan before meeting him, and since then I am a HUGE FAN, so thanks a bunch for the video Charles.

Welp, it’s twelve twenty four in DC, so I expect around six thirty. He’s got sundowners syndrome as part of his Alzheimer’s spectrum, so he mentally shuts down around five PM. Sad.

He’ll need to have the Super Bowl explained to him on Monday. And he’ll miss that fantastic new 24 spinoff where foreigners get wasted by Real Americans (But this one’s black! Oh Noes!)

Here’s more:

The US federal appeals court has rejected the Trump administration’s request to immediately reinstate a travel ban blocked by a federal judge on Friday.

The ban targeted people from seven mainly Muslim countries.

State lawyers had argued it was unconstitutional and discriminatory.

The federal judge in Seattle had ruled against government lawyers’ claims that states did not have the standing to challenge Mr Trump’s executive order.

SCOTUS can’t help Trump, at least until Gorsuch is seated, and then he’d have to both refuse to recuse himself and them somehow convince both Kennedy and Roberts to side with Trump. Meanwhile Trump is going out of his way to insult the independent judiciary, something I know has to be grinding Roberts’ gears. As much as I dislike the Chief Justice it’s hard to see the guy who stood up to his own side twice to upheld Obamacare twice rubber stamping Trump’s flagrantly bigoted abuse of power.

Alyosha  Feb 5, 2017 • 3:19:28am

I think, and this is coming from a place of virtual ignorance, that this series of events points to Bannon’s desire to remake everything ASAP. That there’s an understanding amongst the cabal (wow, we’ve come back to the type of terminology that was used during the Bush years) that time is short and maximal damage must be inflicted as quickly as possible using executive privilege.
I mean, we’re leaning so heavily on the Judicial Branch for oversight because the other two are so badly compromised.
I guess that the way I’m reading the situation is that, if we were dealing with halfway competent actors, none of this shit would have been attempted before Gorsuch had been confirmed.
Now that Trump has made a point of demonstrating that the judiciary is there to rubberstamp his EOs, that his nominee for the SC must be seen in this light (as Schumer has recently recognised); how is it possible that an adroit political mind like Bannon has not argued for a more measured and timely approach? Unless he knows just how time-poor the administration is and how compromised Trump will soon be revealed to be. It’s possible that he’s just as stupid as Trump. Or that Trump can’t be controlled.

I still don’t know how to read their roadmap. If ham-fisted incompetence is a cover for some deep scheme, I’m failing to see it.

Bannon certainly seems to be acting like he knows time is not his friend and he needs to hurry if wants to accomplish his stated goals of burning the system to the ground. For Bannon, Trump is simply the vehicle he’s using to reach his destination, and maybe he recognizes that the vehicle he’s riding in is akin to a broken-down Yugo.

I think, and this is coming from a place of virtual ignorance, that this series of events points to Bannon’s desire to remake everything ASAP.

Honestly I think people are vastly overstating Bannon’s influence. Occam’s Razor tilts towards Trump just being that much of an unhinged asshole. We have this tendency to infantilize leaders we perceive as incompetent and insist a nefarious mastermind is behind them. It happened with Bush & Cheney and now it’s happening with Trump & Bannon. Some people are clearly using it as an insult to get under Trump’s skin and maybe drive wedge between them, which is fine, but it’s definitely a mistake to believe it. Trump has been a racist his entire life, was raised by racists, got sued by the DOJ in the 70’s for racist rental policies, ran the birther lie into the ground, and came up with the whole Muslim ban long before Bannon came on board his campaign.

As a baby boomer born in the middle of that generation, I have a certain provincialism towards music from the 60s and 70s but Harold Arlen’s song, when performed in such a soulful manner by a master musician like Emmanuel, is possibly the prettiest tune I know. It’s no wonder why it is has been a staple for artists since it was composed.

Greets and saluts from the resistance.

So, yesterday I was out shopping with the Mrs. and she was looking for dresses. We’re in Macy’s and lo and behold, what do I spot?

An Ivanka Trump dress. A nice looking number. Okay. No biggie.

Except for the bit that it’s made in China.

The same people who keep claiming that Bannon/Trump will bring jobs back to the US had absolutely no problem going overseas for their manufacturing lines - because it maximized their profits.

Of course, Trump twits also think that the tax cuts will benefit them. So, once again, I’ll trot out the tax rate tables as far as anyone could figure based on Trump’s tax plan:

While the folks making under $37k get a 3 point cut, which amounts to a $1,000 or less tax cut. For people making $37k to $190,000, most will see no cut at all. But the people making over $190k? Those are the folks who get the biggest cuts - both in percentage terms and in absolute dollars. Throw in the estate tax repeal that the GOP wants, and it’s a huge burden shift from the rich to everyone else since the GOP will use the loss in revenue as excuse to slash and burn the safety net, and to make cuts to programs that are separately funded like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

This is how the GOP operates, and Trump knew his marks better than every other GOPer that ran.

Theoretically within reach. They’re already backsliding on dismantling Obamacare (the word of the day now is “repair”), while there’s resistance growing within the Congressional GOP ranks against The Great Wall of Derp because (wait for it…) it costs too much and it has no immediate redeeming value besides being a monument to stupidity. This is an admin ripe to be mocked. And it still doesn’t even begin to convey what these bigots are doing to the nation and the nation’s standing in the world.

Our allies overseas are horrified by Trump. When you treat the PM of Australia with contempt and hang up on him because it’s past your bedtime (5pm), you know it’s bad. What’s even worse is that the entire thing was probably a misunderstanding because Trump heard words liberal and refugee and thought that Australia was a bunch of lefties.

The Bannon/Trump admin is rushing headlong into fights it cannot possibly hope to win. It’s alienated the press, the courts keep rebuffing the Muslim ban (and should there be a split, we’ll see the Supreme Court acting soon enough), and the historic negatives Bannon/Trump started with are only going down. Rallies and demonstrations we have not seen in more than a generation are standing up in opposition to Trump. None of this bodes well, and add in the fact that the Bannon/Trump foreign policy is pro-Russia, the only one who benefits from the upheaval here is Russia.

Bannon/Trump turns a blind eye to Russia’s actions in Ukraine. And the admin is continuing to downplay the investigation into Russian activities before/during/after the election here. Hacking, passing info on to Wikileaks, and other actions, plus Trump’s own ties to Russians. All of it bodes poorly, for him.

So despite my avatar, which is intended as more wry than real- INPEACH has been a thing shrilled out against the last few Presidents, the desensitization factor, I’d say it’s too soon. Forcing a hamstringing of policy, resignation may actually be the more effective tactics.

147
lawhawk  Feb 5, 2017 • 8:11:32am

re: #142 harlequinade

Impeachment begins in the House. The GOP controls the House, and therefore it will not happen unless the GOP recognizes that Trump is unavoidably and undeniably engaging in acts that constitute high crimes and misdemeanors.

While I’d consider violations of the Emoluments Clause is sufficient, GOP doesn’t. I’d consider Trump violating his oath to protect/defend the constitution to be impeachable, but the GOP doesn’t - see his statements on free speech, demonstrations, defamation, and even breaking the church/state separation.

No, what is likely to be the threshold for the GOP is that Trump gets the nation into a war, lying at every step of the way. It might take a violation of the War Powers Act to do it, but given how craven the GOP is, that might not be enough.

So, it’s all the more likely it would take House control flipping to Democrats to see impeachment truly gain currency. It would still take the Senate to hold the trial, and 2018 isn’t favorable to the Senate flipping since more Democrats are up for election than GOPers.

Takes a simple majority in the House for an impeachment, so with the House currently seated with a split 239-192 (Pompeo left to join Bannon/Trump admin, and Becerra left to become CA AG).

And impeachment itself doesn’t mean removal, so even if Democrats could peel off enough Republicans to get such a bill through, the odds are it would be a party-line vote in the Senate and the DNC would take it in the pants as the GOP did in ‘98. Even the Washington Post loved Melissa McCarthy’s SNL Spicer opening:

NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” has no shortage of white guys to play White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

But this week producers went outside of their cast roster to fill the role with a guest appearance by Melissa McCarthy — who absolutely crushed it.

McCarthy displayed her commanding comedic presence as a fed-up, unhinged Spicer who scolded reporters in a sketch that stretched well beyond seven minutes.

She didn’t just imitate a real-life person — McCarthy embodied an outrageous character so effectively that, judging by the studio audience’s delayed reaction at her presence, she was unrecognizable at first.

Not at all a fan of the Super Bowl but I gotta admit it has proven to be a welcome and delightful diversion from dire reality today. The park is packed with fans (all Atlanta it seems) who are so happy and excited, here having a blast on such a special occasion for them which I totally get cuz I’d feel the same way if it was my favorite team.

Wearing a Texans t-shirt (not to make a statement, just my last clean t-shirt cuz I hate laundry), I was walking Buddy this morning and met some very fun folks. Got invited to sit and have a cup o’ coffee with 4 guys here who have clearly been partying hard since last night. Had me LMAO. Didn’t feel like fixing Sunday morning breakfast so I made a run to Shipley’s for a sausage cheese kolache and picked up another half dozen for the guys who are so adorable, friendly, fun and invited an old white woman to sit and talk shit about football for a bit. They may have even inspired me to watch the game later to cheer on Atlanta to kick some Patriot butts.

I needed that. A reminder to feel the joy.

People did say Trump would never win. So…

That gives me hope even the Republicans will come up with something to use as impeachment material if Trump starts to show he is a real threat to the party and their chances in the next few elections.

Party first…everything else comes later. Trump will never be first because it is obvious to me the GOP never thought he would win either…so they know the positions they are in and they are tenuous.

I trust Pence with Nukes way more than I trust Trump. Also I have my doubts Pence would offend out foreign allies as much as Trump does.

Of course there’s a lot about him I can’t stand but I would still take him over Trump.

Also, Pence is pretty dim and has zero charisma. If it came to ‘selling’ the public on any type of initiative, he’d never get it done.

I forget, he is doing his big interview tonight right before the game. A great position to get your message out and with America watching bigly.

That means Trump will be looking at those ratings.

I will be doing my part those ratings are low as I refuse to watch anything Trump until I see reports or video way after the event. I hope America turns elsewhere too. Nothing will piss off The Orange Head than low ratings.

Not on the same network. I can pretty much guarantee that those getting ready to watch the SB will not care a bit about watching Trump. It will be all football pre-game. And beer. And partying.

My understanding is it will be on FOX within the Superbowl pre-show sometime around 4 PM. Do I have that wrong?

I thought they were going to show an edited (go-figure) versiona of the O’Really interview and show the whole thing online and probably on FOX news over and over.

We need to nix this idea/hope of impeachment. It’s just not going to happen. And as horrible as Trump is, Pence is worse with his calm demeanor and actual knowledge of how government works. Republicans own Trump. Remind them every day for the next 4 years as we head off the right wing dream in 2 years. We have to take back at least the House or Senate. It’s the only hope this nation has. That’s what we need to be concentrating on.

I’m not counting in impeachment. At the same time, there are differences between Trump and Pence. Pence would not have gone off on the Australian PM. Pence wouldn’t be trying to wreck our international agreements.

Which they’re going to try to do anyway.

I don’t want any of them in the white house. I’d also like to have a couple of bills paid off right now so that I can do some more things for my kids.

Edit: There’s not much we can do right now but fight Trump as much as possible. And fight Pence as much as possible. Trump’s doing the kind of damage that can lead to world wars. We have to eliminate it all.

Oh, no apology needed.

Believe it or not, I think it was President Obama that started the Super Bowl Preshow address to the nation. If I remember correctly it has always been on the network carrying the game. So of course Trump is going to glom on and get some face time.

I believe they did the same with Obama in the last year or two. O’Reilly even did the interview.

2014—Along the way, he interrupted the president 42 times, by my count — although, given the amount O’Reilly spoke, it may be more accurate to say Obama was interrupting him. Sometimes he argued with Obama as though the president were a guest on “The O’Reilly Factor.” Of the 2,500 words uttered during the interview, O’Reilly spoke nearly 1,000 of them.

washingtonpost.com

2011—We counted it up and found 48 instances of O’Reilly interrupting the president in this single interview. And we collected them all for you in one annoying video!
